Update:
Technical Director:
arrival confirmed

From NUFC, Monday:

Newcastle United have appointed Sudarshan Gopaladesikan as the club's Technical Director.

Reporting into a new Sporting Director, Sudarshan - known as Suds - will lead the club's football data operations, working closely with Eddie Howe and his coaching staff and the club's performance, medical, analysis, methodology and recruitment teams.

His role will be dedicated to implementing data-informed practices across all sporting departments throughout men's, women's and Academy teams.

Suds joins the Magpies after leaving Italian side Atalanta BC, where he was Director of Football Intelligence. During his time in Bergamo, Atalanta secured three consecutive top five finishes in Serie A, won the UEFA Europa League and reached a Coppa Italia final.

Prior to his move to Italy, he was Head of Sports Data Science at Portuguese side SL Benfica. In his five seasons in Lisbon, Benfica's men's team won the Primeira Liga title and reached the quarter-finals of both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, while Benfica's women's team won two national titles. Meanwhile, Benfica's academy reached the UEFA Youth League final twice and won the 2021/22 edition of the tournament.

Outside of his club experience, Suds lectures for FIFA's Executive Education programmes and the PFA Business School on data-driven decision making.

Suds said: "I'm delighted and honoured to be joining Newcastle United as Technical Director. Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with clubs that have deeply passionate fanbases, and Newcastle stands out for its unique connection between the team, the city and its supporters.

"I'm excited to work alongside the club's talented staff to identify what helps give us a competitive edge. Most of all, I'm looking forward to experiencing the incredible matchday atmosphere at St. James' Park and being part of this proud football family and community."

Update:
Liv forever

The Times report that Newcastle are preparing a revised contract extension for Tino Livramento designed to head off interest in the full back from Manchester City.

The 22 year-old joined the Magpies just under two years ago from Southampton and is under contract until 2028 at Gallowgate.

He's due to link up with Eddie Howe's squad in the coming days after some time off that followed a marathon season including his maiden senior England cap, a Carabao Cup winner's medal and an U21 European Championship gong.

Update:
Victor Hugo

Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike is heading to the Premier League, after the terms of a £79m transfer to Liverpool were agreed upon.

The 23 year-old Frenchman was on Newcastle's wish list but attempts to close a deal foundered last week. Claims that a second Toon bid for the player was made following rejection of the initial one now seem false.

Whether the arrival of Ekitike at Anfield ends their interest in Newcastle's Alexander Isak depends on which media outlet you trust.....

PS: Long-standing Toon transfer target James Trafford is on the verge of returning to former club Manchester City.

The 22 year-old made a £15m switch from Citizens to Burnley in 2023, but a buyback clause was inserted and now looks in line to be activated if their current number one Ederson moves on in this transfer window.

Update:

Departure
:
Away the lad

Update: While his former side were struggling in Scotland on Saturday, Sean made his Leeds bow from the bench in a 0-0 draw against Manchester United in Stockholm.

Sean Longstaff
was unveiled as a Leeds United player on Friday, having completed his switch to Elland Road after an
improved bid totaling £15m was accepted.

The 27 year-old left the Magpies' training camp in Austria to undergo his medical having previously reached agreement on personal terms. He's signed a four year contract.

Sean was into the final 12 months of his contract at SJP, having made 214 league and cup appearances since 2018, scoring 16 times.

25 Premier League outings last season included just eight starts, the last of which came at Brentford in December.

He leaves with the good wishes of most fans of the club he's supported since childhood; given an opportunity by Rafa Benitez after loan spells at Kilmarnock and Blackpool, surviving the Steve Bruce era and making a tangible contribution to the club's resurgence under Eddie Howe.

Longstaff is part of an exclusive group to have scored in the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League for the Magpies.

A semi-final brace against Southampton sent United to Wembley in the 2023 Carabao Cup Final and his penalty shootout conversion at Forest set his side on the road to cup glory in the same competition last season.

Sean's golden moment though will remain the strike at the Gallowgate End against PSG in the Champions League - a memorable episode during what will remain one of the greatest ever nights in the history of the club.

There's sometimes a doubt over what sort of reception a former player will receive when he returns. Not so with him - and he'll deserve every last cheer. One of our own.

2025/26:
Renumbering

NUFC confirm that Anthony Elanga has taken squad number 20, worn by Lewis Hall for the last two seasons.

Hall meanwhile moves on to number 3, vacant since Paul Dummett left the club in 2024.

Making the announcement, the club reminded supporters that all squad numbers for the new season remain subject to change. The departure of Callum Wilson left number 9 available and prompted speculation that Alexander Isak could switch to that from his current number of 14.

Update:
Wyn Davies RIP

We're desperately sorry to report that former Newcastle centre forward Wyn Davies died on Wednesday at the age of 83.

The man known as the "Mighty Wyn" is forever associated with United's Fairs Cup adventures, helping secure trophy success in 1969 and scoring ten goals across the club's three seasons of participation.

Wyn's early playing career came as a part-timer with the Deiniiolen and Llanberis clubs, while working as a slate miner.

Joining Caernarfon Town, Davies then signed for Wrexham in 1960. A £20,000 move to Bolton Wanderers followed two years later and the first of 34 full Welsh caps came in 1964 - against England at Wembley Stadium.

Having proved a dangerous opponent in games against the Trotters, Joe Harvey convinced Davies to join Newcastle in October 1966, his £80,000 fee an NUFC club record.

(It later transpired that United had failed to complete a deal 12 months earlier when wage demands couldn't be met).

Making his bow in a 0-3 home derby defeat that month, it took Wyn five games to get off the mark, doing so in a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Gallowgate.

And the following January saw him plunder his only treble in our colours, in an FA Cup tie against Coventry City at Highfield Road.

The following season saw Wyn improve his scoring prowess as United rose from a perilous 20th place finish to 10th - and ended up with a Fairs Cup place.

His aerial prowess saw 1968's Manfred Mann cover of Bob Dylan's "Mighty Quinn" re-worded by the Leazes End into "Mighty Wyn."

The 1970/71 season was Wyn's last as a Magpie: netting against Inter Milan both home and away but scoring just twice in the league as injuries took their toll.

Amid interest from Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday, the 29 year-old joined Manchester City that summer for £60,000.

Just a year later though he was sold on to Manchester United, having previously turned down a move to Old Trafford in order to join Newcastle.

Later spells with Blackpool, Stockport County and Crewe Alexandra followed before a knee problem curtailed Wyn's career.

His time on Tyneside between 1966 and 1971 brought 53 goals in 216 appearances. Internationally, he scored six time for Wales and won 34 caps in a decade from 1963.

Playing his final games for Bangor City in 1979, Davies later famously became a baker for Warburtons in Bolton and remained in the North West following his retirement.

2018 saw a plaque unveiled outside his childhood home in Caernarfon, Wyn commenting that day; "Newcastle was the best club I played for. Humble people and fanatical."

Update:
Striker search resumes

Having dropped out of the running for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike, Newcastle have found themselves credited with interest in two further forwards.

Brentford's DR Congo international Yoane Wissa was linked to both the Magpies and Spurs earlier this summer and is under contract until 2026 with a further 12 month option. Spurs are now managed by his ex-boss Thomas Frank.

Turning 29 this September, Wissa has 45 Premier League goals to his name since arriving from Lorient in 2021. That total includes 19 last season and he's netted against United in our last two visits to West London.

He's set to be absent for at least six Premier League games in December and January, assuming that he's selected to play for DR Congo at the African Cup of Nations Finals.

Elsewhere, the name of Benjamin Sesko has also cropped up again following reports that United scouts had watched the RB Leipzig forward back in March.

Now 22, the Slovenian international was linked with a host of Premier League clubs in 2024 but chose to extend his current deal until 2029. He's rated at over £70m.

Sesko has scored 27 goals in 70 Bundesliga appearances over the last two seasons since arriving from RB Salzburg.

2025/26:
PL TV delay continues

The Premier League are still to publish live TV alterations for the month of September, meaning that the following trio of Newcastle games remain tbc:

Sat 13.09.2025 tbc Wolves (h)
Sat 20.09.2025 tbc Bournemouth (a)
Sat 27.09.2025 tbc Arsenal (h)

The scheduling of those games will be influenced by when European club fixtures are played, meaning that some or all of them will come with either/or caveats.

Unlikely lads
:
Movement

Tracking transfers involving ex-Magpie reserves, the fate of this midfield quartet are worth a mention:

Beginning with Lucas De Bolle, whose decision to quit South Shields midway through last season and move to Portugal has paid dividends.

The 22 year-old joined Portimonense and after impressing for their U23 side has agreed a three year deal with the second-tier side based in the Algarve city of Portimao. Appropriately, they play in black and white shirts.

One of De Bolle's former South Shields colleagues has also found a new club, Mackenzie Heaney signing for fellow National League North outfit Spennymoor Town.

Into the National League meanwhile and following his exit from Gateshead after an injury-hit 2024/25 season, Greg Olley has put pen to paper with rivals York City.

Finally, the nomadic career of Kyle Scott has brought him back to his native England after a spell in the USA.

Now 27, Scott has left USL side Orange County in order to sign for League Two Crawley Town.

2025/26:
Magpies learn National League Cup opposition

Groups for this season's 32 team National League Cup have been announced, with Newcastle U21s paired with three of last season's four opponents, namely Boston United, Gateshead and FC Halifax Town.

The only new group stage opponents will be Scunthorpe United rather than Tamworth, with Group D completed by the U21s of Leeds United, Boro and the mackems.

As was the case last season, the U21 sides each play all four National League clubs away from home but don't meet each other, with the top two teams in each of the four groups advancing to the knockout stages.

Fixtures:

G1: w/c Mon 11.08.2025 Gateshead (a)
G2: w/c Mon 15.09.2025 Halifax Town (a)
G3: w/c Mon 20.10.2025 Boston Utd (a)
G4: w/c Mon 24.11.2025 Scunthorpe Utd (a)

Six National League sides turned down a place in this season's competition; Altrincham, Carlisle United, Eastleigh, Hartlepool United, Yeovil Town and York City.

The Magpies exited at the knockout stage last season on penalties at Altrincham.

On This Day in History
21st July

Born Or Died:

1898 William Gibson born, Larkhall, Scotland. (1923-29)

A member of Newcastle's 1924 FA Cup winning side, left half Willie had moved from Ayr United the previous October for £2,500, debuting in a 2-1 victory at Preston a month later.

Gibson was instrumental in the club's First Division title triumph in the 1926/27 season, making 32 starts. One of his shirts from that season is on display in the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden Park.

Playing his final senior game in March 1929, Willie then retiring and joined Birmingham City as their trainer.

Later returning to Tyneside and worked as a baker, Gibson's passing was noted in 1992.

1943 John Evens Wright Sinclair born, Culross, Scotland. (1967-69)

Known to all and sundry as "Jackie", the diminutive wide man had begun his career in the black and white of Dunfermline Athletic before moving on to Leicester City in 1965.

Winning one Scotland cap during his time at Filbert Street, Jackie moved to SJP for a fee of £67,500 and debuted in a 0-0 home draw with Nottingham Forest in January 1968.

His first goal for United came in a 4-1 victory at Coventry the following week, but the one he'll be remembered for came at SJP in the Fairs Cup Semi-Final against Rangers.

Leading 1-0 through Jim Scott, Sinclair's strike sealed a 2-0 aggregate success over the Ibrox side and caused their followers to invade the Gallowgate pitch in an attempt to have the tie abandoned.

Jackie retained his place in the side for both legs of the final victory over Ujpest Dozsa, but appeared only as an unused substitute the following year in the same competition.

Struggling for his place in the United first XI following the emergence of Alan Foggon, Sinclair moved on to Sheffield Wednesday in December 1969, David Ford coming in the opposite direction, in exchange.

A loan spell at Chesterfield in the 1972/73 season was followed by a brief spell out in South Africa with Durban.

Jackie then returned to his native Fife and rejoined Dunfermline. Playing his final league games in the colours of Stenhousemuir, he later worked for the Coal Board and more recently was a golf club steward.

Living in Dollar, he was back on Tyneside in June 2009 as part of the Fairs Cup 40th anniversary celebrations - but uniquely for that side, he'd played in the competition before joining United (for Dunfermline).

March 2010 saw Jackie confirm that he was battling stomach cancer and receiving treatment in a Falkirk hospital, with former team mate Jim Scott on hand to provide support and encouragement.

To make matters worse, Jackie's wife Lynne was diagnosed with the same dreadful disease, for the third time in six years.

Confirming the news, Jackie said:

"None of us are invincible - that's what all this underlines. I may have been a footballer, as fit as that makes you, but cancer is no respecter of people or professions.

"I know what I'm facing and I want the Newcastle fans to know, not because I'm chasing sympathy but because they have always been so great to me. Cancer is a fact of life. It won't just go away because I want it to, so it's no good denying it."

Sadly, Jackie lost his battle against the disease in September 2010.

1987 Mohamed El-Gabbas born, Port Said, Egypt. (2005)

One of our more exotic signings, Mohamed won an Academy place at Newcastle along with two other youngsters in a SoccaStars Tournament staged in various Arab nations.

Algerian Suddouk Al Haj won the event but was unable to gain a work permit, leaving Al Gabbas and Abdul Rahman Al Bukhari from Saudi Arabia in 2005.

Striker Gabbas played in a friendly at Esh Winning in October of that year and he and Bukhari were introduced to the SJP crowd before the Arsenal game two months later.

Nothing more was heard of either at United,
Gabbas returning to his former club El Masry in Port Said. By 2009 He was also playing for the Egyptian national side.

Joining Belgium side Lierse in 2009, Gabbas moved on to Swindon Town on a short-term deal four years later and played 10 senior games in 2013/14 season without scoring.

Signing for French side Arles, a return to Egypt came with Cairo-based Wadi Degla during 2014.

Returning to Lierse two years later, 2018 then found Mohamed back at Wadi Degla, signing a three year deal after Lierse went bust.

He then signed for Egyptian Premier League side Pyramids in 2019.

The Belgians finished with ten men after Alen Mrzlecki was red-carded for a second bookable offence - a deliberate handball.

Game three of the European tour saw the action switch from Germany to Austria in faintly farcical circumstances.

Concerns over the behaviour of Turkish football fans after previous incidents saw the German FA refuse to sanction a venue in that country, before an attempt to stage the game in Hungary was then also ruled out.

That left a remote location in Austria to host the game, which was in some doubt before kick-off due to a sodden pitch!

Substitute Mehdi Abeid grabbed what looked like a winning goal, only to see a last minute equaliser deny Alan Pardew's side a second successive friendly victory.

The artificial pitch at the Providence Stadium saw Steve McClaren opt not to risk the fitness of any defenders, meaning that our back four consisted of Rolando Aarons, Lubo Satka, Shane Ferguson and Gael Bigirimana.

Despite taking an early lead, United were led a merry dance by the Timbers reserve XI; only a quick-fire brace from Aarons in the second half giving the score a hint of respectability.
