Update:
Bee the one?
Update: The Athletic report that
Newcastle's bid of £25m for Wissa was unsurprisingly rejected on Tuesday.
An increased offer is now anticipated, with personal terms already said to be agreed.
Earlier: Brentford forward Yoane Wissa has left his side's training
camp in Portugal amid speculation over a possible move to Tyneside for the DR Congo international.
The 28 year-old (he's 29 in September) was linked to both the
Magpies and Spurs earlier this summer and is under contract until 2026 with
a further 12 month option.
Spurs had been tipped to complete a deal that would reunite Wissa with his
Bees ex-boss Thomas Frank, but those claims have receded in recent days.
Nottingham Forest were also credited with an interest in him.
Wissa has 45 scored Premier League goals since arriving from Lorient in 2021 - a total including 19 last season. He's netted against United in
each of our last two visits to West London.
He's set to be absent for up to six Premier League games in December and
January, assuming that he's selected to play for DR Congo at the African Cup
of Nations Finals.
As to whether Newcastle are pursuing Wissa to play with Alexander Isak or replace him,
it's anyone's guess at present. However, photos of Isak training away from
the rest of the squad on Tuesday have been explained as a consequence of a
thigh strain he's suffered from.
Whether he'll travel to Singapore remains to be seen and it's also unclear
at this point why this ailment wasn't advanced as a reason for him missing
the Celtic game.
Update:
Technical Director:
arrival confirmed
From NUFC, Monday:
Newcastle United have appointed Sudarshan Gopaladesikan as the club's
Technical Director.
Reporting into a new Sporting Director,
Sudarshan - known as Suds - will lead the club's football data operations,
working closely with Eddie Howe and his coaching staff and the club's
performance, medical, analysis, methodology and recruitment teams.
His role will be dedicated to
implementing data-informed practices across all sporting departments
throughout men's, women's and Academy teams.
Suds joins the Magpies after leaving
Italian side Atalanta BC, where he was Director of Football Intelligence.
During his time in Bergamo, Atalanta secured three consecutive top five
finishes in Serie A, won the UEFA Europa League and reached a Coppa Italia
final.
Prior to his move to Italy, he was Head
of Sports Data Science at Portuguese side SL Benfica. In his five seasons in
Lisbon, Benfica's men's team won the Primeira Liga title and reached the
quarter-finals of both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, while
Benfica's women's team won two national titles. Meanwhile, Benfica's academy
reached the UEFA Youth League final twice and won the 2021/22 edition of the
tournament.
Outside of his club experience, Suds
lectures for FIFA's Executive Education programmes and the PFA Business
School on data-driven decision making.
Suds said: "I'm delighted and
honoured to be joining Newcastle United as Technical Director. Throughout my
career, I've had the privilege of working with clubs that have deeply
passionate fanbases, and Newcastle stands out for its unique connection
between the team, the city and its supporters.
"I'm excited to work alongside the
club's talented staff to identify what helps give us a competitive edge.
Most of all, I'm looking forward to experiencing the incredible matchday
atmosphere at St. James' Park and being part of this proud football family
and community."
Update:
Liv forever
The Times report that Newcastle are
preparing a revised contract extension for Tino Livramento designed
to head off interest in the full back from Manchester City.
The 22 year-old joined the Magpies just under two years ago from Southampton
and is under contract until 2028 at Gallowgate.
He's due to link up with Eddie Howe's squad in the coming days after some
time off that followed a marathon season including his maiden senior England
cap, a Carabao Cup winner's medal and an U21 European Championship gong.
Update:
Victor Hugo
Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike is
heading to the Premier League, after the terms of a £79m transfer to
Liverpool were agreed upon.
The 23 year-old Frenchman was on Newcastle's wish list but attempts
to close a deal foundered last week. Claims that a second Toon bid for the
player was made following rejection of the initial one now seem false.
Whether the arrival of Ekitike at Anfield ends their interest in Newcastle's
Alexander Isak depends on which media outlet you trust.....
PS: Long-standing Toon transfer target James Trafford is on the verge
of returning to former club Manchester City.
The 22 year-old made a £15m switch from Citizens to Burnley in 2023, but a
buyback clause was inserted and now looks in line to be activated if their
current number one Ederson moves on in this transfer window.

Away the lad
Update: While his former side were struggling
in Scotland on Saturday, Sean made his Leeds bow from the bench in a 0-0 draw against
Manchester United in Stockholm.
Sean Longstaff was unveiled as a Leeds United
player on Friday, having completed his switch to Elland Road after an
improved bid totaling £15m was accepted.
The 27 year-old left the Magpies' training camp in Austria to undergo
his medical having previously reached agreement
on personal terms. He's signed a four year contract.
Sean was into the final 12 months of his contract at SJP, having made 214
league and cup appearances since 2018, scoring 16 times.
25 Premier League outings last season included just eight starts, the last
of which came at Brentford in December.
He leaves with the good wishes of most fans of the club
he's supported since childhood; given an opportunity by Rafa Benitez after
loan spells at Kilmarnock and Blackpool, surviving the Steve Bruce era and
making a tangible contribution to the club's resurgence under Eddie Howe.
Longstaff is part of an exclusive group to have scored in the Premier
League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League for the
Magpies.
A semi-final brace against Southampton sent United to Wembley in the 2023
Carabao Cup Final and his penalty shootout conversion at Forest set his side
on the road to cup glory in the same competition last season.
Sean's golden moment though will remain the strike at the Gallowgate End
against PSG in the Champions League - a memorable episode during what will
remain one of the greatest ever nights in the history of the club.
There's sometimes a doubt over what sort of reception a former player will
receive when he returns. Not so with him - and he'll deserve every last
cheer. One of our own.
2025/26:
Renumbering
NUFC confirm that Anthony Elanga
has taken squad number 20, worn by Lewis Hall for the last two seasons.
Hall meanwhile moves on to number 3, vacant since Paul Dummett left
the club in 2024.
Making the announcement, the club reminded supporters that all squad numbers
for the new season remain subject to change. The departure of Callum Wilson
left number 9 available and prompted speculation that Alexander Isak could
switch to that from his current number of 14.

Update:
Wyn Davies RIP
We're desperately sorry to
report that former Newcastle centre forward Wyn Davies died on
Wednesday at
the age of 83.
The man known as the "Mighty
Wyn" is forever associated with United's Fairs Cup adventures,
helping secure trophy success in 1969 and scoring ten goals across the
club's three seasons of participation.
Wyn's early playing career came as a part-timer with the Deiniiolen and
Llanberis clubs, while working as a slate miner.
Joining Caernarfon Town, Davies then signed for Wrexham in 1960. A £20,000
move to Bolton Wanderers followed two years later and the first of 34 full
Welsh caps came in 1964 - against England at Wembley Stadium.
Having proved a dangerous opponent in games against the Trotters, Joe Harvey
convinced Davies to join Newcastle in October 1966, his £80,000 fee an NUFC
club record.
(It later transpired that United had failed to complete a deal 12 months
earlier when wage demands couldn't be met).
Making his bow in a 0-3 home derby defeat that month, it took Wyn five games
to get off the mark, doing so in a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at
Gallowgate.
And the following January saw him plunder his only treble in our colours, in
an FA Cup tie against Coventry City at Highfield Road.
The following season saw Wyn improve his scoring prowess as United rose from
a perilous 20th place finish to 10th - and ended up with a Fairs Cup place.
His aerial prowess saw 1968's Manfred Mann cover of Bob Dylan's "Mighty
Quinn" re-worded by the Leazes End into "Mighty Wyn."
The 1970/71 season was Wyn's last as a Magpie: netting against Inter
Milan both home and away but scoring just twice in the league as injuries
took their toll.
Amid interest from Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday, the 29 year-old
joined Manchester City that summer for £60,000.
Just a year later though he was sold on to Manchester United, having
previously turned down a move to Old Trafford in order to join Newcastle.
Later spells with Blackpool, Stockport County and Crewe Alexandra followed
before a knee problem curtailed Wyn's career.
His time on Tyneside between 1966 and 1971 brought 53 goals in 216
appearances. Internationally, he scored six time for Wales and won 34 caps
in a decade from 1963.
Playing his final games for Bangor City in 1979, Davies later famously
became a baker for Warburtons in Bolton and remained in the North West
following his retirement.
2018 saw a plaque unveiled outside his childhood home in Caernarfon, Wyn
commenting that day; "Newcastle was the best club I played for. Humble
people and fanatical."

22nd July |
|
Born Or Died:
1905 Thomas Mordue, born,
Horden, Durham. (1925-26)

Centre forward who joined United from Horden Athletic at a cost of £150 in
November 1925, having previously played for both Herrington Swifts and Hull
City.
Despite scoring on his debut in a 3-1 win over Sheffield United at SJP in
December of that year, the form of Hughie Gallacher limited his first team
opportunities greatly in those pre-substitute days.
The player nicknamed "Tucker" departed the following September, with
Sheffield United paying £500 for his services.
Mordue later returned to the region with Hartlepools United in 1928, winding
down his career at Horden Colliery five years later.
His death was recorded in November 1975.
1980 Ryan McGuffie, born,
Dumfries
(2000-02)

Full back/midfielder signed from
Annan Athletic some months before team mate Colin McMenamin, having begun his
senior playing career with Queen's Park.
Initially appearing as a trialist in a reserve team friendly at Scarborough in
August 2000, Ryan went became a second string regular but was released in May
2002.
After trials at Macclesfield Town, Carlisle United and Queen of the South,
McGuffie signed for Gretna and played over 150 games in a six year period - the
high point being a goal in the 2006 Scottish FA Cup Final against Hearts at
Hampden Park.
Following Gretna's demise, Ryan joined Morton and then belatedly realised his
ambition of representing hometown club Queen of the South when moving to
Palmerston Park on a free in 2010.
Completing a century of appearances for the Doonhamers, McGuffie left in 2014 to join Australian side St. Albans
Saints.
Taking a coaching role with Oakleigh Cannons in 2021, Ryan returned to
Melbourne-based St.Albans as manager two years later. He left in April 2024.
1989 Daryl Janmaat, born, Leidschendam, Holland (2014-16)

Newcastle's sixth signing of
summer 2014 was a Dutch international full back, fresh from featuring in five
games at the World Cup Finals in Brazil - including Holland's remarkable 5-1
triumph over Spain.
Arriving on a six year deal from Feyenoord for a rumoured £5m, Janmaat's
previous season had seen him make 30 appearances and score twice as the
Rotterdam club finished second behind Champions Ajax.
Confirmation of Daryl becoming a Magpie was delayed for around 48 hours until
the deal taking predecessor Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal was concluded and
announced.
He appeared in every league game in 2014/15 apart from one, which followed a
ridiculous late sending off in a desperate defeat at Leicester City.
His second season for United was also fairly mixed. Goals in the league and
league cup capped some decent performances but then there was the
Southampton debacle where a slip allowed the Saints in to score.
Janmaat claimed he was injured and left the pitch but there were stories
that team mates accused him of feigning injury and he damaged his
hand wrist punching something inanimate in the dressing room.
Returning to the first team for the final game of the season after relegation
was already confirmed, Janmaat scored in a 5-1 home victory over Spurs.
Expected to leave that summer, in the event he
played in United's first two Championship games before a £7.5m switch to
Premier League Watford was finalised.
After 85 appearances and scoring six times, Janmaat reached agreement with
Watford to leave on a free transfer in October 2020 and signed for ADO Den
Haag, where he had started his career.
Retiring as a player at the end of the 2021/22 season, he was then appointed
Technical Director of Den Haag but stayed in post for less than six months.

2004 Yankuba Minteh, born, Bakoteh, Gambia (2023-24)

Newcastle's first signing of the summer 2023 transfer window
was teenager Yankuba from Danish side Odense
BK.
The Gambian-born forward was snapped up following an impressive first season in
Denmark, having previously played for Steve Biko FC in his homeland.
A £7m fee was reported for Minteh, who joined Feyenoord on a season-long loan
where he hit 10 Eredivisie goals and one against Celtic in the Champions
League.
Internationally the youngster marked his senior debut for Gambia by scoring against DR Congo during September 2023.
A successful season in Holland playing for Liverpool-bound coach Arne Slot
prompted talk of a bid for Minteh from Anfield, but Newcastle looked to have
the choice of whether to pursue a further loan deal or integrate the player
into their own squad.
In the event though, a desperate need to enter the transfer market in order to
meet profitability and sustainability rules saw Yankuba sold in late June 2024
without having ever kicked a ball for the Magpies.
A bid of around £30m from fellow Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion
was accepted, amid press reports of interest from
or negotiations with Marseille, Lyon, AS Roma, Everton and Nottingham Forest.
Missing when Albion won at Gallowgate in the Premier League, Minteh marked his
first return to Tyneside by scoring in the FA Cup - repeating the feat in
Sussex when the sides met again in the PL.
His goal celebration in front of the away fans that day was memorably
eccentric - and out of all proportion considering he'd never kicked a ball in
anger for United.

United's second pre-season game saw them face Australian A League side
opposition at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin on the South Island of New

The game took place just days after the deaths of John Alder and Liam Sweeney
who were in the MH17 plane that was shot down.
Wreaths
were laid on seats before kick-off and there was a minute's silence as well as
applause in the 28th and 63rd minutes - the respective ages of Liam and John.
Two
local lads, Adam Campbell and Adam Armstrong combining for the fourth goal was
possibly the most fitting tribute of all.

The Newcastle side appeared in training tops with the message "in memory
of John & Liam".

Before kick-off, Alan Pardew and Fabricio Coloccini went into the Newcastle fan
section of the stadium to lay wreaths on seats set aside for the two fallen
fans.

An immaculately-observed minute's silence followed as messages and images were
displayed on big screens at the venue. Both sides also wore black armbands.
