Red menace:
Isak: inevitable update

Latest: The Times claim that a contract extension and substantial increase on his wages was recently offered to Alexander Isak by Newcastle but rejected.

The Magpies were reportedly prepared to pay £200K a week but the player is said to be holding out for nearer £300K.

Earlier: Following confirmation of Alexander's Isak absence from the touring squad, the player has reportedly "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club" during the current transfer window.

They stress that no formal transfer request has been made by the 25 year-old, no bids have been received and the player is not for sale according to his current club.

None of those things matter though; the message is clear. A concerted campaign from the North West involving briefings to sympathetic media outlets has succeeded in unsettling the player and encouraged his representatives.

This latest development will doubtless prompt a backlash against Isak from disgruntled Newcastle fans, which will then be advanced as a reason for his inevitable exit.

How much blame can be attached to United is debatable, but a turnover of director level personalities hardly helps paint a picture of a club with a coherent strategy.

There's a feeling the project has stalled and the grand off-field plans of PIF remain unannounced, along with the enforced inactivity of successive transfer windows.

Ultimately though it comes down to money. The Premier League have ensured that the Magpies cannot match the salaries offered elsewhere - and cannot reject any sizeable offer made to them for their prize asset.

Whether the club are capable of reinvesting the anticipated Isak cash to a level where they remain competitive by improving the squad is the £150m question.

Meltdown:
Thigh's the limit....

Thursday saw the Newcastle squad fly out for their Asian tour without Alexander Isak, reportedly due to a thigh problem.

The news comes as a hammer blow to Eddie Howe, who failed to mention any injury concerns following the player's absence at Celtic on Saturday but expected that his top scorer would be on the plane to Singapore.

That leaves United with William Osula as their sole senior striker available for upcoming friendlies against Arsenal, Spurs and a Korean select XI.

The news inevitably provoked a storm of speculation regarding the future of the Swedish forward, still the subject of strong interest from Liverpool despite their acquisition of Hugo Ekitike.

In the light of news that Isak refused to accept improved terms to remain at Gallowgate, it appears that Newcastle attempted to acquire Ekitike as his replacement, only to be outflanked by the Anield club.

To embark on a promotional tour without the clubs' most high-profile player does little to enhance our reputation - even if only as a non-playing member of the party.

Having targeted the global fanbase for their future revenue goals, there's a certain irony in making a long haul trip to show up our shortcomings first-hand to those new fans.

Using words like "crisis" about a squad newly-augmented by a £50m+ signing seems ridiculous, but concerns over the current direction of the club are pertinent and valid.

Callum Wilson's exit was correct for all concerned but a player with 47 Premier League goals obviously needs replacing - and the prospect of one with 54 goals to to his name following him down Barrack Road would rightly raise questions about just who is in control around here.

As ever, in the absence of communication from this club, the vacuum is soon filled - usually to our detriment.

PS: Martin Dubravka was also absent from the party.

Incoming:
Park purchase confirmed

The Magpies have announced the signing of 18 year-old Seung-Soo Park from second tier side Suwon Bluewings in his home country of South Korea for an undisclosed fee.

Predominantly a left-sided winger, the U20 international spent time training with Bayern Munich last year.

Park was in Glasgow on Saturday to watch his new club in action and will reportedly link up with the club's U21s. It remains to be seen whether he joins fellow new recruit Antonio Cordero in spending next season out on loan.

Interviewed by NUFC TV, Park suggested that he'll return to Korea next Wednesday when Eddie Howe's side face a K League Select XI at his former home in Suwon.

He's the second Korean to sign for the Magpies, following midfielder Ki Sung Yeung, who made 19 senior appearances in all competitions between 2018 and 20202.

2025/26:
Arsenal (n)

The next instalment of Newcastle's pre-season programme sees them visit Singapore to face fellow Premier League side Arsenal this Sunday (12.30pm BST, 7.30pm local).

Regardless of the score after 90 minutes, the game will be followed by a penalty shootout.

This Gunners meeting will be shown live free of charge at WonderBar in The Gate, as will the two games in Korea.

Match venue is the 55,000 capacity Singapore National Stadium, built on the site of the former National Stadium that was visited by United back in August 1996.

Kevin Keegan's Magpies defeated an S-League Select XI 5-0 that day with new signing Alan Shearer in attendance but not involved in the game.

The Gunners defeated AC Milan 1-0 in that stadium on Wednesday in 28 degree heat; Mikel Arteta giving pitch time to no less than 22 players. AC Milan then triumphed 6-5 in their post-match shootout.

Both games are marketed as the "Singapore Festival of Football" although it's not a tournament; AC Milan play just once before moving on to face Liverpool in Hong Kong.

United meanwhile decamp to Korea for games against
a local XI and fellow Premier League side Spurs, billed as the Coupang Play Series but again consisting of two games only. Spurs then move on to Hong Kong to face Arsenal.

NUFC match guide/travel advice is online here

The club's green change kit is set to be worn for the first time at some point during the three game Asian tour; we're unsure which game it will debut in.

Several NUFC fan events are scheduled, with Shay Given, Shola Ameobi and John Beresford scheduled to appear.

There's also the chance to have a photo taken with the Carabao Cup and a first team meet & greet (sold out).

The Singapore Mags website is online here

Team: A 30 man squad flew out of Tyneside on Thursday, with Alexander Isak and Martin Dubravka omitted:

Vlachodimos, Pope, Ruddy, M.Thompson, Gillespie, Krafth, Ashby, Botman, Targett, Trippier, Hall, Livramento, Schar, Lascelles, Burn, A.Murphy, Guimaraes, Joelinton, L.Miley, Tonali, Willock, Barnes, J.Murphy, Osula, Elanga, Gordon, Neave, Al.Harrison, Munda, Hernes.

It's predicted that new arrival Seung-Soo Park will join up with the squad when they move on from Singapore to his native South Korea next week.

AFC: The Gunners travelled with a 30 man squad including SJP old boy Mikel Merino and new signings Noni Madueke, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard.

15 year-old duo Max Dowman and Marli Salmon are also in the party and debuted from the bench against AC Milan.

That 30 man squad could become 31 if a proposed deal for Sporting Lisbson forward Viktor Gyokeres is concluded.

Stats: By our reckoning, this will be the seventh different venue that these two clubs have faced each other in - and the first outside England.

In addition to the four home stadia (St.James' Park, the Manor Ground, Highbury and the Emirates), the sides have met in FA Cup Finals at Wembley and in that competition at the neutral venue of Stoke's Victoria Ground.

The Magpies and the Gunners last played friendlies back in the 1900/01 season; drawing 1-1 in London on Boxing Day before Newcastle triumphed 5-1 on Tyneside on New Years Day.

2025/26:
TV times

The Premier League have now confirmed their live TV picks for September, with one Newcastle game rescheduled:

Sat 13.09.2025 Wolves (h) 3pm no live UK TV
Sat 20.09.2025 Bournemouth (a) 3pm no live UK TV
Sun 28.09.2025 Arsenal (h) 4.30pm Sky

The Arsenal game falls between Newcastle's midweek Carabao Cup Third Round tie* and the second round of Champions League fixtures, spread across Tuesday September 30th and Wednesday October 1st.

With reference to the Bournemouth away game, just because it hasn't been selected for live TV, that doesn't confirm 100% that it will be a 3pm Saturday kick-off.

The first round of Champions League fixtures take place on the preceding Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: were Newcastle to be in action on the Thursday, that would result in the Bournemouth game moving to the Sunday.

While the Spurs v Wolves game picked for Sky on Sunday 28th is liable to change if Spurs are playing a Champions League tie on the 30th, there's no similar advice regarding our game v Arsenal on the same day - reason unknown.

The situation mirrors for our game regardless of that: were ourselves or Arsenal to be playing in the Champions League on the 30th then we would not meet in the PL on the 28th.

So in real terms, only the Wolves game is now confirmed, with the other three liable to possible change in the days following the Champions League draw on August 28th.

* that is split over two successive midweeks, with teams involved in the Champions League assured of playing their Carabao Cup tie during second of the two weeks.

There are no scheduled rail works between London Kings Cross on the day of the Arsenal game. For once.

The Bournemouth game looks unaffected by rail engineering work on the Saturday. Were it to be played on the Sunday, trains would still run direct to and from London but with average journey times extended by 45 minutes and trains not calling at either Basingstoke or Winchester.

Update:
New faces

Following that Sudarshan Gopaladesikan aka has been appointed as Technical Director by Newcastle, the vacant roles of Chief Executive Officer and Sporting Director are anticipated to be filled in the near future.

Several names have appeared in connection with both posts, but David Hopkinson is poised to become CEO in succession to Darren Eales, with Ross Wilson tipped to replace the now-departed Paul Mitchell as SD.

The 54 year-old Canadian Hopkinson had been in charge of the US-based Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation and was Global Head of Partnerships for Real Madrid between 2018 and 2020.

He also had an earlier involvement with sports teams in Toronto, which included MLS side Toronto FC.

41 year-old Scotsman Wilson meanwhile remains in post at Nottingham Forest, having held a similar position at Rangers until tempted across the border in 2023.

Update:
Bee the one?

Update: The Athletic report that Newcastle's bid of £25m for Wissa was unsurprisingly rejected on Tuesday. An increased offer is now anticipated, with personal terms already said to be agreed.

Earlier: Brentford forward Yoane Wissa has left his side's training camp in Portugal amid speculation over a possible move to Tyneside for the DR Congo international.

The 28 year-old (he's 29 in September) was linked to both the Magpies and Spurs earlier this summer and is under contract until 2026 with a further 12 month option.

Spurs had been tipped to complete a deal that would reunite Wissa with his Bees ex-boss Thomas Frank, but those claims have receded in recent days. Nottingham Forest were also credited with an interest in him.

Wissa has 45 scored Premier League goals since arriving from Lorient in 2021 - a total including 19 last season. He's netted against United in each of our last two visits to West London.

He's set to be absent for up to six Premier League games in December and January, assuming that he's selected to play for DR Congo at the African Cup of Nations Finals.

Update:
Liv forever

The Times report that Newcastle are preparing a revised contract extension for Tino Livramento designed to head off interest in the full back from Manchester City.

The 22 year-old joined the Magpies just under two years ago from Southampton and is under contract until 2028 at Gallowgate.

He's due to link up with Eddie Howe's squad in the coming days after some time off that followed a marathon season including his maiden senior England cap, a Carabao Cup winner's medal and an U21 European Championship gong.

2025/26:
Seasiders stalemate

Newcastle U18s  0  Blackpool U18s  0

United's U18 side began their pre-season fixture programme with a goalless draw against their Blackpool counterparts at Little Benton on Tuesday.

Team: Jones (Anderson 46), Tika-Lemba (Patterson 46), Old (Johnson 46), Epia (Durrant 46), Morgan (Trialist II 46), Cogdon (Alabi 46), Lucas (M.Miley 46), O'Donovan (Cogdon 69), Ndiweni (Pinnington 46), Mills (Waddani 27), Trialist I (Wooster 46).

20 young Magpies were involved, with Jude Cogdon playing 45 minutes before returning to feature in the closing stages.

Two unidentified trialists also featured - one a forward who won but missed a first half penalty kick.

Unlikely lad:
Nobby in demand

Following a succession of coaching roles in locations as diverse as Canada, Peru, Sweden, Thailand and Blyth, ex-Magpie Nolberto Solano's world tour has continued.

His latest port of call is Pakistan, agreeing to take charge of both the senior national team and also their U23 side.

2025/26:
Renumbering

NUFC confirm that Anthony Elanga has taken squad number 20, worn by Lewis Hall for the last two seasons.

Hall meanwhile moves on to number 3, vacant since Paul Dummett left the club in 2024.

Making the announcement, the club reminded supporters that all squad numbers for the new season remain subject to change. The departure of Callum Wilson left number 9 available and prompted speculation that Alexander Isak could switch to that from his current number of 14.

Whoops, He did it Again...

From the BBC, it only seems like yesterday that Sean lifted the First Division trophy in 1907 with Colin Veitch and Bill McCracken.....

(Peter Briggs, Stuart Millen, James Thow)

Sudarshan Gopaladesikan has recently been appointed as the club's new technical director, like Eales, making the move from Atalanta Utd.

The Daily Record's report of Newcastle's bid to recruit Ross Wilson manages to confuse an Italian football club and one in the USA.

What's this all about then? Click here
for a rambling explanation of sorts....

On This Day in History
24th July

Born Or Died:

1921 Albert Clark born, Ashington.
(1948-49)

Right half signed from North Shields during January 1948 for a fee of around £800.

The 27 year-old was a reserve team regular and a senior debut followed when deputising for Joe Harvey in a 3-2 home victory over Sheffield United that December.

However that would Albert's sole appearance, denying his former club an additional £300 in the event of him playing six times.

Clark returned to Appleby Park ahead of the 1948/49 season, joining Consett in 1951.

Later appearing for Annfield Plain, by 1953, he was at his hometown club Ashington.

Albert passed away in 1977.

1949 Dave Clarke born, Newcastle.
(1967-69)

Learning his trade at Montague and Fenham Boys Clubs, Dave joined Newcastle after a successful trial and appeared at reserve team level.

Understudy to Iam McFaul at Gallowgate,  Clarke failed to make a senior appearance for United but was on the bench for five Fairs Cup games in the 1968/69 season, starting with the trip to Sporting Lisbon.

Exiting Gallowgate in the summer of 1969, Dave signed for Doncaster Rovers and fleetingly appeared for their first team before agreeing a loan to Darlington.

Next came a move to Gainsborough Trinity and the beginning of a long career in the non-league game that included spells at both South Shields and Gateshead.

However, the move that was to seal his reputation came in 1977, when Dave made the switch to Blyth Spartans.

The following decade saw him established as the number 1 at Croft Park, experiencing the club's famous FA Cup run and appearing for the England semi- professional side.

March 1986 saw Dave answer an emergency call from former club Newcastle and make an unlikely playing return for the Magpies in a 1-0 reserve victory away to Aston Villa.

Awarded a testimonial match in 1987 against United (former colleague Iam McFaul bringing a full-strength side), Clarke worked as assistant to Jim Pearson and succeeded him as Spartans manager the following year.

That proved to be short-lived however and Dave resigned in November 1988, opting to continue his playing career with Alnwick Town and later manage the club. He also had a second stint at Gateshead, this time serving as their goalkeeping coach.

Newcastle raided Morecambe's academy in February 2020 for Kyle, who rejected an offer from his hometown club in order agree a two year scholarship.

With Sunderland Schools’ FA U15s when they won the English Schools’ National Cup in 2019, winger Crossley debuted for United U18s in a 2-2 home draw with Leeds in September 2020.

Blooded at U23 level the following April, he took barely half an hour to mark his arrival with a goal against Crystal Palace in PL2.

Awarded a professional contract in July 2022, Crossley was an unused substitute when Spaniards Rayo Vallecano made a friendly visit to SJP that December - the nearest he came to a senior outing.

Despite ending the 2023/24 season as top scorer with 10 league and cup goals for the U21s, Kyle was released by United.

A reunion with former Magpies U21 Coach Elliott Dickman then followed at National League North side South Shields.

What Else?

1965 Newcastle were among eight teams participating in a five-a-side tournament at the Hillheads Park home of Whitley Bay.

Alan Suddick and Jim Iley featured for the Magpies, who were in the opposite side of the draw for the eight team event to Sunderland, in anticipation of a Tyne-wear final.

However, neither side qualified and a Bishop Auckland side managed by Lawrie McMenemy defeated North Shields to lift the trophy in front of 4,500 fans.

An outraged Keegan vowed never to return to Victoria Park and later inherited the defender after becoming Fulham boss. McGuckin was immediately shipped off back to Hartlepool.

Ex-mackem 'keeper Tim Carter conceded both goals in the first half to the great amusement of the travelling support and failed to reappear for the second period.

A possibly unique fixture at SJP, with Newcastle facing two different teams in one game.

First up was a Blyth Spartans side including old boy Bruce Halliday, before neighbours Gateshead took to the field for the second half, with ex-Mag Jeff Wrightson playing.

A benefit match for drug charities in the Blyth area, the original venue of Croft Park had been ruled out for fear of congestion due to the large numbers attending.

The game served as a warm-up ahead of United's pre-season games in Thailand, Singapore and Japan.

With United quickly trailing the Royals on their debut at the Madejski Stadium, manager Ruud Gullit opted to being himself off the bench to show his flagging troops what was required.

Gullit's display was inspirational and his superb long ball to Paul Robinson saw him fouled in the box, fellow former Quaker James Coppinger scoring from the spot.

Robinson himself then levelled to spare our blushes in front of a big away following, including many Southern exiles.

Sir Bobby called it a "jolly good workout".

2006 New Magpies signing Damien Duff was presented to the media at SJP, having been greeted on the steps of the Milburn Stand by an enthusiastic Tyneside crowd.

Flanked by Freddy Shepherd and Glenn Roeder, when asked why he'd chosen United ahead of other top flight clubs (notably Tottenham) Duff told reporters that:

"It feels special. Playing here with Chelsea and Blackburn it was an unbelievable place to come as an away player, it’s probably the most passionate place in England to play. That is one of the many factors why I wanted to come here.

"It took a couple of days - I spoke to the gaffer and the lads here like Scott Parker, Steve Carr and Shay Given, but at the end I listened to my heart.

"Maybe there are a lot of Liverpool supporters in Ireland saying ‘Why didn’t you sign for us?’ but my heart told me to come to Newcastle United.

"I hope we can bring success. Obviously we’re not kidding ourselves, it’s a massive job ahead of us and we know we’re not going to be challenging for the Premier League this year. But I’m here for five years and hope to do great things."

2007 United's reserve side beat Northern League side Newcastle Benfield 3-2 at Sam Smiths Park, thanks to goals from Kazenga LuaLua, James Marwood and Mark Bertram.

Alan Shearer's big mate Rob Lee spoke to the The Daily Express about the continuing managerial limbo that the number nine found himself in at SJP:

"I speak to Alan every day and he’s frustrated to say the least. He’s coming to the end of his tether now. He’s waited for ages and been told that things were due to happen, but nothing has and he’s very frustrated.

"He organised all the pre-season games at the end of last season but he also had targets in mind that he wanted to bring in to the club. Now it looks like he will miss out on them.

"I’m amazed he hasn’t already told Newcastle that he doesn’t want the job any more, but there will come a point where he says, ‘You’re too late’.

Faroe Islands midfielder Jóan Símun Edmundsson made a senior bow for United as a substitute.

visit to Hull City, United played a training game against Burnley behind closed doors.

Details were scarce but it was confirmed that Sandro Tonali featured for the Magpies - his first appearance since October 2023, when the midfielder began a ban for breaking betting regulations.

The game ended in a 2-3 defeat with Alexander Isak and Garang Kuol said to be on target, although never confirmed.
