Update:
You what?

A remarkable claim made by The Guardian on Friday:

Alexander Isak has been offered a staggering £600,000-a-week tax-free deal by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia with further lucrative bonuses on top. The Newcastle striker is open to leaving St James’ Park and Liverpool, who are long-term admirers, are keeping an eye on the situation.

Isak has not travelled to Asia with his Newcastle teammates for the club’s pre-season tour, officially because of a minor muscle injury, and is assessing his options. They include Al-Hilal, who reached the Club World Cup quarter-finals, losing to Fluminense, and want to make a grand statement by signing Isak – one of the most coveted players on the market.

Al-Hilal, who are managed by Simone Inzaghi, are prepared to sweeten the package for the striker with bonuses if he were to win the league and/or the Asian Champions League and top the scoring charts.

Isak has been unsettled by the transfer talk and he did not play for Newcastle in the friendly at Celtic last Saturday. The club have no desire to sell him and the fans would surely take the dimmest of views of their Saudi owners if they were to let him go to Al-Hilal. Like Newcastle, Al-Hilal are owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

2025/26:
Arsenal (n)

The next instalment of Newcastle's pre-season programme sees them visit Singapore to face fellow Premier League side Arsenal this Sunday (12.30pm BST, 7.30pm local).

Regardless of the score after 90 minutes, the game will be followed by a penalty shootout.

This Gunners meeting will be shown live free of charge at WonderBar in The Gate, as will the two games in Korea.

Match venue is the 55,000 capacity Singapore National Stadium, built on the site of the former National Stadium that was visited by United back in August 1996.

Kevin Keegan's Magpies defeated an S-League Select XI 5-0 that day with new signing Alan Shearer in attendance but not involved in the game.

The Gunners defeated AC Milan 1-0 in that stadium on Wednesday in 28 degree heat; Mikel Arteta giving pitch time to no less than 22 players. AC Milan then triumphed 6-5 in their post-match shootout.

Both games are marketed as the "Singapore Festival of Football" although it's not a tournament; AC Milan play just once before moving on to face Liverpool in Hong Kong.

United meanwhile decamp to Korea for games against a local XI and fellow Premier League side Spurs, billed as the Coupang Play Series but again consisting of two games only. Spurs then move on to Hong Kong to face Arsenal.

NUFC match guide/travel advice is online here

The club's green change kit is set to be worn for the first time at some point during the three game Asian tour; we're unsure which game it will debut in.

Several NUFC fan events are scheduled, with Shay Given, Shola Ameobi and John Beresford all in attendance.

The Singapore Mags website is online here

Team: A 30 man squad flew out of Tyneside on Thursday, with Alexander Isak and Martin Dubravka omitted:

Vlachodimos, Pope, Ruddy, M.Thompson, Gillespie, Krafth, Ashby, Botman, Targett, Trippier, Hall, Livramento, Schar, Lascelles, Burn, A.Murphy, Guimaraes, Joelinton, L.Miley, Tonali, Willock, Barnes, J.Murphy, Osula, Elanga, Gordon, Neave, Al.Harrison, Munda, Hernes.

N
ew arrival Seung-Soo Park has now joined the squad.

AFC: The Gunners travelled with a 30 man squad including SJP old boy Mikel Merino and recent signings Noni Madueke, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard.

They've since added defender Cristhian Mosquera after completing his transfer from Valencia.

15 year-old duo Max Dowman and Marli Salmon are also in the party and debuted from the bench against AC Milan.

That 30 man squad could become 31 if a proposed deal for Sporting Lisbson forward Viktor Gyokeres is concluded.

Stats: By our reckoning, this will be the seventh different venue that these two clubs have faced each other in - and the first outside England.

In addition to the four home stadia (St.James' Park, the Manor Ground, Highbury and the Emirates), the sides have met in FA Cup Finals at Wembley and in that competition at the neutral venue of Stoke's Victoria Ground.

The Magpies and the Gunners last played friendlies in 1900/01; drawing 1-1 in London on Boxing Day before Newcastle triumphed 5-1 on Tyneside on New Years Day.

Update:

Update:
Trafford hopes dashed

Writing in The Athletic, the usually-reliable David Ornstein confirmed on Friday that Manchester City had reached agreement to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

The 22 year-old Cumbrian left the Citizens for Turf Moor two years ago, with a buy back proviso inserted in the contract in addition to a sell-on clause.

The England international custodian had been coveted by Newcastle for over a year, amid claims that he'd verbally agreed to become a Magpie in June 2024.

However a failure to seal a deal that had looked inevitable leaves Eddie Howe's side empty-handed once again.

Update:
Isak: inevitable update

Latest: The Times claim that a contract extension and substantial increase on his wages was recently offered to Alexander Isak by Newcastle but rejected.

The Magpies were reportedly prepared to pay £200K a week but the player is said to be holding out for nearer £300K.

Earlier: Following confirmation of Alexander's Isak absence from the touring squad, the player has reportedly "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club" during the current transfer window.

They stress that no formal transfer request has been made by the 25 year-old, no bids have been received and the player is not for sale according to his current club.

None of those things matter though; the message is clear. A concerted campaign from the North West involving briefings to sympathetic media outlets has succeeded in unsettling the player and encouraged his representatives.

This latest development will doubtless prompt a backlash against Isak from disgruntled Newcastle fans, which will then be advanced as a reason for his inevitable exit.

How much blame can be attached to United is debatable, but a turnover of director level personalities hardly helps paint a picture of a club with a coherent strategy.

There's a feeling the project has stalled and the grand off-field plans of PIF remain unannounced, along with the enforced inactivity of successive transfer windows.

Ultimately though it comes down to money. The Premier League have ensured that the Magpies cannot match the salaries offered elsewhere - and cannot reject any sizeable offer made to them for their prize asset.

Whether the club are capable of reinvesting the anticipated Isak cash to a level where they remain competitive by improving the squad is the £150m question.

Meltdown:
Thigh's the limit....

Thursday saw the Newcastle squad fly out for their Asian tour without Alexander Isak, reportedly due to a thigh problem.

The news comes as a hammer blow to Eddie Howe, who failed to mention any injury concerns following the player's absence at Celtic on Saturday but expected that his top scorer would be on the plane to Singapore.

That leaves United with William Osula as their sole senior striker available for upcoming friendlies against Arsenal, Spurs and a Korean select XI.

The news inevitably provoked a storm of speculation regarding the future of the Swedish forward, still the subject of strong interest from Liverpool despite their acquisition of Hugo Ekitike.

In the light of news that Isak refused to accept improved terms to remain at Gallowgate, it appears that Newcastle attempted to acquire Ekitike as his replacement, only to be outflanked by the Anield club.

To embark on a promotional tour without the clubs' most high-profile player does little to enhance our reputation - even if only as a non-playing member of the party.

Having targeted the global fanbase for their future revenue goals, there's a certain irony in making a long haul trip to show up our shortcomings first-hand to those new fans.

Using words like "crisis" about a squad newly-augmented by a £50m+ signing seems ridiculous, but concerns over the current direction of the club are pertinent and valid.

Callum Wilson's exit was correct for all concerned but a player with 47 Premier League goals obviously needs replacing - and the prospect of one with 54 goals to to his name following him down Barrack Road would rightly raise questions about just who is in control around here.

As ever, in the absence of communication from this club, the vacuum is soon filled - usually to our detriment.

PS: Martin Dubravka was also absent from the party.

Incoming:
Park purchase confirmed

The Magpies have announced the signing of 18 year-old Seung-Soo Park from second tier side Suwon Bluewings in his home country of South Korea for an undisclosed fee.

Predominantly a left-sided winger, the U20 international spent time training with Bayern Munich last year.

Park was in Glasgow on Saturday to watch his new club in action and will reportedly link up with the club's U21s. It remains to be seen whether he joins fellow new recruit Antonio Cordero in spending next season out on loan.

Interviewed by NUFC TV, Park suggested that he'll return to Korea next Wednesday when Eddie Howe's side face a K League Select XI at his former home in Suwon.

He's the second Korean to sign for the Magpies, following midfielder Ki Sung Yeung, who made 19 senior appearances in all competitions between 2018 and 20202.

2025/26:
TV times

The Premier League have now confirmed their live TV picks for September, with one Newcastle game rescheduled:

Sat 13.09.2025 Wolves (h) 3pm no live UK TV
Sat 20.09.2025 Bournemouth (a) 3pm no live UK TV
Sun 28.09.2025 Arsenal (h) 4.30pm Sky

The Arsenal game falls between Newcastle's midweek Carabao Cup Third Round tie* and the second round of Champions League fixtures, spread across Tuesday September 30th and Wednesday October 1st.

With reference to the Bournemouth away game, just because it hasn't been selected for live TV, that doesn't confirm 100% that it will be a 3pm Saturday kick-off.

The first round of Champions League fixtures take place on the preceding Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: were Newcastle to be in action on the Thursday, that would result in the Bournemouth game moving to the Sunday.

While the Spurs v Wolves game picked for Sky on Sunday 28th is liable to change if Spurs are playing a Champions League tie on the 30th, there's no similar advice regarding our game v Arsenal on the same day - reason unknown.

The situation mirrors for our game regardless of that: were ourselves or Arsenal to be playing in the Champions League on the 30th then we would not meet in the PL on the 28th.

So in real terms, only the Wolves game is now confirmed, with the other three liable to possible change in the days following the Champions League draw on August 28th.

* that is split over two successive midweeks, with teams involved in the Champions League assured of playing their Carabao Cup tie during second of the two weeks.

There are no scheduled rail works between London Kings Cross on the day of the Arsenal game. For once.

The Bournemouth game looks unaffected by rail engineering work on the Saturday. Were it to be played on the Sunday, trains would still run direct to and from London but with average journey times extended by 45 minutes and trains not calling at either Basingstoke or Winchester.

Update:
New faces

Following that Sudarshan Gopaladesikan aka has been appointed as Technical Director by Newcastle, the vacant roles of Chief Executive Officer and Sporting Director are anticipated to be filled in the near future.

Several names have appeared in connection with both posts, but David Hopkinson is poised to become CEO in succession to Darren Eales, with Ross Wilson tipped to replace the now-departed Paul Mitchell as SD.

The 54 year-old Canadian Hopkinson had been in charge of the US-based Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation and was Global Head of Partnerships for Real Madrid between 2018 and 2020.

He also had an earlier involvement with sports teams in Toronto, which included MLS side Toronto FC.

41 year-old Scotsman Wilson meanwhile remains in post at Nottingham Forest, having held a similar position at Rangers until tempted across the border in 2023.

Update:
Bee the one?

Update: The Athletic report that Newcastle's bid of £25m for Wissa was unsurprisingly rejected on Tuesday. An increased offer is now anticipated, with personal terms already said to be agreed.

Earlier: Brentford forward Yoane Wissa has left his side's training camp in Portugal amid speculation over a possible move to Tyneside for the DR Congo international.

The 28 year-old (he's 29 in September) was linked to both the Magpies and Spurs earlier this summer and is under contract until 2026 with a further 12 month option.

Spurs had been tipped to complete a deal that would reunite Wissa with his Bees ex-boss Thomas Frank, but those claims have receded in recent days. Nottingham Forest were also credited with an interest in him.

Wissa has 45 scored Premier League goals since arriving from Lorient in 2021 - a total including 19 last season. He's netted against United in each of our last two visits to West London.

He's set to be absent for up to six Premier League games in December and January, assuming that he's selected to play for DR Congo at the African Cup of Nations Finals.

Update:
Liv forever

The Times report that Newcastle are preparing a revised contract extension for Tino Livramento designed to head off interest in the full back from Manchester City.

The 22 year-old joined the Magpies just under two years ago from Southampton and is under contract until 2028 at Gallowgate.

He's due to link up with Eddie Howe's squad in the coming days after some time off that followed a marathon season including his maiden senior England cap, a Carabao Cup winner's medal and an U21 European Championship gong.

Seasiders stalemate

Newcastle U18s  0  Blackpool U18s  0

United's U18 side began their pre-season fixture programme with a goalless draw against their Blackpool counterparts at Little Benton on Tuesday.

Team: Jones (Anderson 46), Tika-Lemba (Patterson 46), Old (Johnson 46), Epia (Durrant 46), Morgan (Trialist II 46), Cogdon (Alabi 46), Lucas (M.Miley 46), O'Donovan (Cogdon 69), Ndiweni (Pinnington 46), Mills (Waddani 27), Trialist I (Wooster 46).

20 young Magpies were involved, Jude Cogdon playing 45 minutes before returning to feature in the closing stages.

Two unidentified trialists also featured - one a forward who won but missed a first half penalty kick.

Unlikely lad:
Nobby in demand

Following a succession of coaching roles in locations as diverse as Canada, Peru, Sweden, Thailand and Blyth, ex-Magpie Nolberto Solano's world tour has continued.

His latest port of call is Pakistan, agreeing to take charge of both the senior national team and also their U23 side.

2025/26:
Renumbering

NUFC confirm that Anthony Elanga has taken squad number 20, worn by Lewis Hall for the last two seasons.

Hall meanwhile moves on to number 3, vacant since Paul Dummett left the club in 2024.

Making the announcement, the club reminded supporters that all squad numbers for the new season remain subject to change. The departure of Callum Wilson left number 9 available and prompted speculation that Alexander Isak could switch to that from his current number of 14.

The Daily Record's report of Newcastle's bid to recruit Ross Wilson manages to confuse an Italian football club and one in the USA.

What's this all about then? Click here

On This Day in History
25th July

Born Or Died:

1966 Darren Jackson born, Edinburgh, Scotland. (1986-88)

Shortly before signing defender Peter Jackson from Bradford City, United manager Willie McFaul went over the border to complete a deal for his namesake, Darren.

By day a printer, Darren was also a prolific scorer for Edinburgh-based part-timers Meadowbank Thistle (who would later mutate into Livingston).

Making his debut from the bench in a 1-2 home defeat by Arsenal in October 1986, Jackson was seen as "one for the future" by his new employers and a spell in the reserves was widely forecast.

The step up to full-time action didn't seem to cause him too many problems and Darren played 25 time in all competitions that season, scoring three goals.

That figure rose to 37 and four goals in the 1987/88 season, includ
ing outings in attack, midfield and even defence.

However the slightly-built player
lost
his place following McFaul's exit and played just once for new boss Jim Smith before being sacrificed to finance a mid-season squad rebuilding programme.

Leaving SJP in December 1988 for Dundee United in a £200K deal, Darren blossomed when back in Scotland and won his first senior international cap in 1995.

By then he'd joined Hibernian and would later move to Celtic - although his time at Parkhead was blighted by the potentially fatal condition hydrocephalus aka water on the brain.

Diagnosed in 1997, Darren happily made a full and rapid recovery and featured for Scotland in the 1998 World Cup Finals.

A loan move to Coventry City was followed by a brief trial with Chinese club Dalian Wanda in early 1999 - allegedly scuppered due to his dislike of Chinese cuisine.

Jackson's next port of call was rather more to his taste, completing a trio of Edinburgh clubs when agreeing to join boyhood heroes Heart of Midlothian.

Later moves saw him feature for Livingston, St.Johnstone and Clydebank before hanging up his boots and becoming a player's agent.

2010 saw Jackson involved in a high-profile divorce case, named as the "other man" in proceedings between Celtic Director Chris Trainer and his wife Lisa.

Darren announced in February 2013 that he was returning to former club Dundee United as a full-time coach following the unveiling of Jackie McNamara as manager.

McNamara had previously been in charge of Partick Thistle and called upon the services of Jackson on a part-time basis while at Firhill - the pair having played together for both Celtic and Scotland.

However, McNamara's exit from Tannadice in September 2015 saw Darren follow and he was out of football until accepting the post of Raith Rovers assistant boss in June 2016, assisting ex-Hearts colleague Gary Locke.

That came to an abrupt end in February 2017 when both were sacked
, Jackson resurfacing on the Scotland U19 coaching staff.

Teaming up with Alan Stubbs at St. Mirren for the 2018/19 season, Darren lasted only until that September, relieved of his duties by Buddies following the sacking of Stubbs.

He launched his own VIP Chauffeur service, Main Event Transfers, in 2019.

1971 Death of Ron Batty, 45. (1945-58)
The 1955 FA Cup winner died suddenly at his home in East Stanley.

What Else?

1920 Newcastle added right half Bert McIntosh to the squad, paying Dundee £1,250 to sign their club captain.

1955
The United squad reported back for pre-season training, using the newly-built gymnasium in the SJP car park. In later years that became the club ticket office.

The second of Newcastle's five games on a week-long tour of Sweden saw them beat third-tier opposition thanks to a late effort from substitute Kenny Mitchell.

Magpies boss Bill McGarry was running up a sizeable telephone bill as he pursued the signature of Spurs striker John Duncan - who ultimately opted to stay at White Hart Lane.

United began what was to be a grotesque season that ended in relegation by beating a village XI in Central Sweden.

Manager Willie McFaul was still in England however, continuing to overhaul his squad.

1988 The Magpies recouped £950K after concluding the sales of Paul Goddard to Derby County for £425,000 and Neil McDonald to Everton for £525,000 - the latter a fee imposed by an independent tribunal.

However it was revealed that 25% of the profit on the deal was due to McDonald's former club Carlisle United, Newcastle acquiring him for £10,000 in 1981.

The Swedish pre-season tour continued in Norrkoping, not against the well-known club, but rather a local minor league outfit who played in black & white stripes.

Team: Wright, Bradshaw, Kristensen, Scott, Watson, Roche, Carr, Peacock, Clark (Makel), Quinn Hunt (Robinson).

1994 United's youngsters were in Northern Ireland for the annual Milk Cup event.

However, there was to be no repeat of our 1985 and 1989 trophy success, a 0-1 loss to Boro ending our interest in the Quarter Finals.

Along the way, Newcastle had beaten a local Boys Brigade side 2-0, with one of their players catching the eye and subsequently becoming a Magpie.

His name? Aaron Hughes.

1997 Magpies forward Les Ferdinand was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £6m, amid media accusations of asset stripping to meet the financial obligations of the PLC.

However, when the dust settled, it also became apparent that United boss Kenny Dalglish had his eyes on a different team formation which didn't include Les in it.

1998 Newcastle announced they had reached agreement with Bayern Munich and Dietmar Hamann to buy the German International midfielder for a fee of £5m.

Chairman Freddy Shepherd flew to Bavaria for final talks and the player was expected on Tyneside within days for a medical.

1998 A Newcastle reserve team were in action in a pre-season game against Whitley Bay at their Hillheads Park ground.

The final score was 4-1 to United thanks to a hat trick from Paddy Kelly and a goal from Argentinian trialist Luciano Filomeno.

Recent signing Carl Serrant made his first appearance for the club at centre half, switching to left wing back in the second half.

2001 Colin McMenamin grabbed all five goals for the reserves at St. James' Park - that's the Alnwick one. The final score was 5-2 after Town went 2-0 up.

Two goals to the good thanks to Nobby Solano, Bobby Robson's side then suffered at the hands of appalling officialdom and some strong tactics from the Germans - before and after Aaron Hughes restored the lead.

2005 It emerged that former Newcastle midfielder Lee Clark was training with the Magpies following his release from Fulham.

However Graham Souness was quick to dampen speculation by insisting that there was no chance of the player being signed and it was purely a favour to him.

One week later and Clark had signed a month-to-month contract at the club....

2007 From the Press Association:

Ex-Newcastle United stars Rob Lee and Warren Barton were arrested in east London on Tuesday night.

Scotland Yard refused to confirm the names, but said two men aged 38 and 41 have been arrested on suspicion of taking and driving a vehicle and driving while unfit.

Officers were called to Hackney Road, east London, at around 11.30pm on Tuesday night to reports of a car being stolen, a Scotland Yard spokesman said.

The limousine was found in the same road, having been involved in a collision with a van.
The men were arrested later at two east London addresses.

Officers are also investigating reports that a satellite navigation system and a mobile phone were stolen from the limousine, Scotland Yard said. The men are in custody at an east London police station.

Both men were later released on police bail.

Having been prevented from playing a match in Utrecht by the presence of the mackems in nearby Amsterdam, Newcastle arranged a trip to Brisbane Road at just ten days notice.

And a rare London pre-season game for the club ended with their heaviest friendly loss since the 1996 Charity Shield at Wembley.

Everything that the O's touched turned to gold - or goals - although they subsequently stuttered to just 17th in League One.

Chris Hughton apologised afterwards for what he called an "embarrassing performance and result", while it proved to be the final game that Obafemi Martins played for the club.

This game is now seen a watershed moment, with senior professionals demanding a "shape up or ship out" attitude from their colleagues in a post-game meeting.

And within a month, the side were off and running in the Championship, with messrs Martin, Duff, Beye and Bassong all gone.

2011 United's pre-season tour of the USA continued to throw up complications, with a trio of defensive withdrawals causing Alan Pardew to summon up a deputy from the reserve tour of the Netherlands.

Flying in from Amsterdam to feature in the final game of the tour against Columbus Crew was rookie Paul Dummett.

That came after Danny Simpson returned to the UK to be at the birth of his bairn, Ryan Taylor injured his groin on the plastic pitch in Orlando and Jose Enrique replaced him in that game although in dispute with the club.

Our wantaway Spaniard then updated his twitter account (in Spanish) to say that:

"The Club is letting go of all the main players. Seriously, do you think is the fault of the players? Andy, etc etc Nolan?"

"This club will never fight again to be among the top 6 with this policy. I think you fans are the best and you deserve the best. Not what they are doing with the club. Thanks to everyone for supporting me."

That comment would come back to haunt him the following April, as a packed SJP marked a 2-0 victory against Liverpool with taunts of "Jose Enrique, we're in the top six."

2017
A youthful Newcastle reserve XI drew 0-0 with Northern League Whitley Bay at Hillheads Park.
