Update:
Ramsdale reunion

Latest: Sky Sports report that Newcastle have reached agreement with Championship side Southampton on a season-long loan deal for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The Stoke-born 27 year-old is due on Tyneside for his medical on Wednesday before putting pen to paper on a loan deal with a subsequent purchase option.

The move follows United's failure to sign long-term target James Trafford, who completed a permanent return from Burnley to previous club Manchester City on Tuesday.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, press reports credited Manchester United with a interest in Nick Pope - oddly enough they don't seem to want Martin Dubravka back...

Ramsdale joined Bournemouth in 2017 during Eddie Howe's time in charge and was an unused substitute for the final Premier League game of their 2016/17 campaign.

Following loans at Chesterfield and AFC Wimbledon, he was between the sticks as the Cherries began the 2019/20 season - playing all but one of the 38 games that led to their relegation from the top flight.

Following Howe out of Bournemouth but remaining in the Premier League at Sheffield United, he was an ever-present for the Blades but suffered a second successive demotion.

That was followed by claimed £24m sale to Arsenal, where Aaron was first-choice for the first two of his three seasons in N5 before losing his place to David Raya.

A permanent move to Southampton then followed at the conclusion of the summer 2024 transfer window, adding a third Premier League relegation to his CV last season.

Ramsdale is under contract at St.Mary's until 2028, but his contract is claimed to include a clause allowing him to exit during the current window for £25m - less than United's failed bid to sign Trafford earlier this month.

He featured for the Saints last Saturday in a 1-2 friendly defeat by Espanyol in Spain.

The last of Aaron's five senior England caps came in 2024.

2025/26:
Team K League (a)

Following Sunday's game in Singapore, the Magpies have now made the six and a half hour flight to South Korean capital Seoul for two further fixtures.

First up is a meeting on Wednesday at Suwon World Cup Stadium with Team K League aka a domestic select XI.

Kick-off at the 42,000 capacity venue is Noon BST (8pm local time) and United are set to debut their new green kit.

Wednesday's game will be shown live free of charge at WonderBar in The Gate.

NUFC match guide/travel advice is online here

Team: Sven Botman won't feature as a precaution but Lewis Hall may get his first pitch time of pre-season.

Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka was omitted from the squad that flew to Singapore but is reportedly in Korea.

18 year-old Seung-soo Park is line to make his Magpies debut at the home of former side Suwon Bluewings.

2025/26:
Howe: no Isak bid

Latest comments to the media from the Magpies boss, now in South Korea with his squad:

On Alexander Isak:

"He is still our player. He’s contracted to us. We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. My wish is that he stays, but that’s not in my full control.’

"We have not received a formal offer for Alex, from any club. My wish is that he stays and we see him playing again next year.’

"I’ve been travelling and today we’ve been working on the training for this afternoon. With these trips, they are always so intense. Of course, I’m in contact with the people I need to be in contact with back at home, but it’s very minimal contact when you’re away."

On new signings:

"It is an important time for us. There is lots to take in. We have to bring the right type of player in. We should in no way act out of character and should work how we always have in the window. That is in a strategic way.

"If the right player isn’t available to us for the right price, then we can't do the deals. Everything has to fall in line. We are looking to add depth and quality to the areas that we have identified.

"Fingers crossed we can get deals done."

On Sven Botman:

"We didn’t think it was a serious injury at the time and we've had that confirmed with a scan.

"He won’t play tomorrow.  He could play against Tottenham on Sunday, but possibly not.

"We hope he’ll be available for the double header at St James’ Park
(on August 8th and 9th)."

On new signing Seung-soo Park:

"I think it's slightly unclear what's going to happen short term with him - we're going to have to make an assessment on where we see him fitting in the best currently.

"We've had only a very short term impression, one or two training sessions. It's been very positive so far - he seems like a very good person, fundamentally, and it's all new experiences for him but I sure he'll do very, very well.

"We're very keen to look at this is a future market for us,
signing a similar profile of player, so this is hopefully the start.

"I'll do everything I can to try to get him on the pitch (in Suwon) because I think that'll be important for him and of course everyone that wants to see him play. I'll certainly do my best.

"We've got lots of information we'll be giving him but I think it'll just be a case of go out and play his normal game and that will be good enough."

2025/26:
Change kit confirmed

The Magpies confirm that their second kit will go on sale this coming Friday (August 1st) and will be worn in their next kickabout this coming Wednesday.

The accompanying press release from adidas neglects to mention the similarity to the green in the Saudi Arabian flag, but does confirm the source of the shirt design:

"We took the famous Tyne Bridge arch as inspiration and created the bold pattern to represent the iconic structure across the new shirt.”

The Tyne Bridge of course is currently working at reduced capacity due to prolonged lack of investment and issues in retaining suitably qualified personnel. Very fitting then.

2025/26:
Villa (a) ticket timetable

Monday saw NUFC announce their revised away ticket sales process, with the details reproduced below.

The loyalty point system continues but the process of reducing them incrementally is gone. Our own summary the new system is 24/24/48: 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to find out if successful, 48 hours to complete purchase.

One ST holder can log on and apply on behalf of seven STs listed in their friends and family - in other words, the maximum number of accounts in a transaction is eight.

NUFC say that all supporters who apply for tickets will receive an email whether they are successful or not.

Aston Villa (a) timetable:

Phase 1: Monday 28th July @ 2pm

Ticket application opens for all season ticket holders to apply for a ticket for this fixture.

Phase 2: Tuesday 29th July @ 2pm

Ticket application window closes. The club will process all submissions, allocating tickets in loyalty point order. We will also ballot a small number of tickets to those who do not meet the loyalty points threshold.

Phase 3: Wednesday 30th July @ 2pm

Supporters who are successful in the application process will now be emailed with a window to go online and purchase their ticket(s) for the fixture. Tickets will be sold using a ‘select your own seat’ model, giving fans the flexibility to choose where they sit and who they sit alongside - whether friends or family.

This system removes the need for travel groups as supporters can make seat selections directly during the purchase window.

Phase 4: Friday 1st August @ 2pm

Once the purchase window for successful applicants closes, any remaining tickets that haven’t been purchased will be offered to those who applied for the fixture and fall within the next tier of loyalty points below the point at which sales were previously fulfilled. For example, a fixture sells out at 10 loyalty points, tickets will then be offered to supporters who applied for tickets with 9 loyalty points.

2025/26:
Leeds (a) ticket timetable

From NUFC, Monday:

Phase 1: Monday 4th August @ 2pm

Ticket application opens for all season ticket holders to apply for a ticket for this fixture.

Phase 2: Tuesday 5th August @ 2pm

Ticket application window closes. The club will process all submissions, allocating tickets in loyalty point order. We will also ballot a small number of tickets to those who do not meet the loyalty points threshold.

Phase 3: Wednesday 6th August @ 2pm

Supporters who are successful in the application process will now be emailed with a window to go online and purchase their ticket(s) for the fixture. Tickets will be sold using a ‘select your own seat’ model, giving fans the flexibility to choose where they sit and who they sit alongside - whether friends or family.

This system removes the need for travel groups as supporters can make seat selections directly during the purchase window.

Phase 4: Friday 8th August @ 2pm

Once the purchase window for successful applicants closes, any remaining tickets that haven’t been purchased will be offered to those who applied for the fixture and fall within the next tier of loyalty points below the point at which sales were previously fulfilled. For example, a fixture sells out at 10 loyalty points, tickets will then be offered to supporters who applied for tickets with 9 loyalty points.

2025/26:
Away ticket update

Monday saw NUFC introduce radical changes to the sales and distribution process for away tickets online here

Aside from popular demand, NUFC's justification for introducing the system was to: "Create a structured and transparent process, ensuring supporters know where they stand before committing to travel plans. Away tickets sold and allocated within approximately 7 working days."

The other options of continuing with an unchanged or amended version of what was in place relied on manual reductions to the loyalty point requirement - a previous attempt to adopt a standard time frame for doing that almost immediately went awry.

The new system also means that the long-running but little-known away season ticket has been abolished.

The loyalty point system continues but the process of reducing them incrementally is gone. Our own summary the new system is 24/24/48: 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to find out if successful, 48 hours to complete purchase.

PS: the 2025/26 away ticket procedure references the ticket forwarding policy for away games that went live last season. That permitted two transfers, which presumably means that same number applies this season.

Match report

Meltdown:
Isak timeline

Sun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Sun 18.05
Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than surgery was forecast.

Sun 25.05
Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.

Tue 27.05
Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to a minor injury, presumably groin.

Mon 14.07
Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for a week-long training camp.

Sat 19.07
Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming tour of Asia.

Mon 21.07
Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park but reportedly cut short the session.

(some source claim this may have been on 22.07)

Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.

Wed 23.07
Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace) Isak.

Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club".

The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial status.

Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would remain a Newcastle player.

Sun 27.07
Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.

Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.

Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak and he remained a Magpie.

U21s:
International Cup draw

The draw for season's U21 International Cup has taken place, with Newcastle U21s returning to the competition and placed in Group C.

Along with Brighton, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, the Magpies are joined by Paris SG, Dinamo Zagreb, Real Sociedad and Benfica.

The arrangement of the 32 team competition means that none of the Premier League teams meet, but each of them host the four continental sides in England.

Update:
Striker search

Aside from the failed attempts to capture Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Hugo Ekitike, Newcastle have been credited with interest in the following forwards recently:

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (unattached). Rumoured interest from AC Milan but excessive wage demands claimed.

Evann Guessand (Nice) Named on the bench for a 2-1 friendly victory over Feyenoord in Austria on Saturday but doesn't appear to have featured.

The 24 year-old Ivory Coast international is the subject of claimed interest both West Ham and Crystal Palace, with Brentford now linked as possible Wissa replacement.

Jorgen Strand Larsen (Wolves) The 25 year-old Norwegian international played just over an hour of a 1-1 kickabout away to Stoke City on Saturday.

Kolo Muani (PSG) Yet to commence pre-season training following World Cup Cup involvement.

Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson (Chelsea)
Due to return to training imminently after holiday following Club World Cup Final on July 13th.

Lois Openda, Benjamin Sesko (RB Leipzig)
25 year-old Belgian international Openda played the first 45 minutes of Saturday's 7-0 victory over FC Toulouse, scoring twice. Sesko appeared for the second half of the kickabout, part of Leipzig's training camp in the Black Forest.

Monday then found Sesko linked with...Manchester United.

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) Started and scored in a 2-2 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in Louisville, USA on Saturday.

Yoane Wissa (Brentford) Returned from pre-season training in Portugal, one NUFC bid was rejected, no confirmation of further bids. Claims that the player is in dispute with the Bees after reneging on a previous promise to let him leave.

Rumoured interest from Spurs, Forest and Saudi side Neom in recent days.

Update:
Youngsters arrive

Newcastle have officially confirmed the signing of two 16 year-olds from Glasgow Rangers, left back Oliver Goodbrand and right-sided attacker Alfie Hutchison.

Updates are awaited on United's claimed acquisition of Isaac Moran, following reports that the 16 year-old England youth international had rejected a contract offer from current club Liverpool. He's a central midfielder.

U18s:
Rovers for openers

This season's U18 Premier League fixtures have been announced and can be read online here

Chris Moore's side will look to improve on last season's fifth-placed finish and begin with a home fixture against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday August 16th (12.30pm).

Update:
O's take Joe

League One side Leyton Orient have sealed a season-long loan for Joe White after the midfielder was omitted from the Asia tour party despite facing Celtic in pre-season.

With the Magpies since 2018, 22 year-old Joe's senior bow came from the bench at home to Bournemouth in February - one of four Premier League outings as a substitute.

Previous loan spells at EFL sides Exeter City, Hartlepool United, Crewe Alexandra and MK Dons, brought him nine goals in 92 league and cup outings.

Meanwhil,
reports from Spain claim that recent Newcastle arrival Antonio Cordero is heading out on loan to Belgian Pro League side KVC Westerlo.

The 18 year-old Spanish youth international winger wasn't involved as Westerlo began their new season with a 2-5 loss at Anderlecht on Sunday. His prospective new side finished ninth last season in the 16 team top flight.

2025/26:
Mariners up next

The U21s return to action on Sunday when they make the short trip over the Tyne to South Shields for a 3pm kick-off at the First Cloud Arena.

They won't come up against former Magpie Kyle Crossley however, after he sustained ligament damage during a friendly match against Carlisle United.

Admission prices are £5 in advance online here

The same game 12 months ago ended
1-1 in front of 1,424 fans. Then as now, the U21s were between coaches.

2025/26:
TV times

The Premier League have now confirmed their live TV picks for September, with one Newcastle game rescheduled:

Sat 13.09.2025 Wolves (h) 3pm no live UK TV
Sat 20.09.2025 Bournemouth (a) 3pm no live UK TV
Sun 28.09.2025 Arsenal (h) 4.30pm Sky

The Arsenal game falls between Newcastle's midweek Carabao Cup Third Round tie* and the second round of Champions League fixtures, spread across Tuesday September 30th and Wednesday October 1st.

With reference to the Bournemouth away game, just because it hasn't been selected for live TV, that doesn't confirm 100% that it will be a 3pm Saturday kick-off.

The first round of Champions League fixtures take place on the preceding Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: were Newcastle to be in action on the Thursday, that would result in the Bournemouth game moving to the Sunday.

While the Spurs v Wolves game picked for Sky on Sunday 28th is liable to change if Spurs are playing a Champions League tie on the 30th, there's no similar advice regarding our game v Arsenal on the same day - reason unknown.

The situation mirrors for our game regardless of that: were ourselves or Arsenal to be playing in the Champions League on the 30th then we would not meet in the PL on the 28th.

So in real terms, only the Wolves game is now confirmed, with the other three liable to possible change in the days following the Champions League draw on August 28th.

* that is split over two successive midweeks, with teams involved in the Champions League assured of playing their Carabao Cup tie during second of the two weeks.

There are no scheduled rail works between London Kings Cross on the day of the Arsenal game. For once.

The Bournemouth game looks unaffected by rail engineering work on the Saturday. Were it to be played on the Sunday, trains would still run direct to and from London but with average journey times extended by 45 minutes and trains not calling at either Basingstoke or Winchester.

Update:
New faces

Following confirmation of the appointment of Sudarshan Gopaladesikan as Newcastle United Technical Director, the vacant roles of Chief Executive Officer and Sporting Director are anticipated to be filled in the near future.

Several names have appeared in connection with both posts, but David Hopkinson is poised to become CEO in succession to Darren Eales, with Ross Wilson tipped to replace the now-departed Paul Mitchell as SD.

The 54 year-old Canadian Hopkinson had been in charge of the US-based Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation and was Global Head of Partnerships for Real Madrid between 2018 and 2020.

He also had an earlier involvement with sports teams in Toronto, which included MLS side Toronto FC.

41 year-old Scotsman Wilson meanwhile remains in post at Nottingham Forest, having held a similar position at Rangers until tempted across the border in 2023.

On This Day in History
29th July

Born Or Died:

1993 Ayoze Perez born Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. (2014-19)

United's first permanent signing in 18 months was a striker arriving for an undisclosed fee on a "long-term contract" from Spanish second tier club CD Tenerife in June 2014.

A fee of less than £2m was reportedly paid for a player who had scored 16 times in 34 games the previous season and who was 12 months away from becoming a free agent.

Debuting for Tenerife's B team during 2012, Perez was blooded in their senior squad in April 2013 and was scouted by various clubs including Porto, Seville, Valencia, Schalke 04, Manchester City, Arsenal and Everton.

A mooted transfer to Swansea City in the January 2014 window was mothballed as the Swans prepared to jettison manager Michael Laudrup and Newcastle announced that the signing was complete in early June.

Perez then made his bow for in the club's opening pre-season game at League One side Oldham Athletic, before joining his colleagues on the plane to New Zealand
.

Giving notice of his promise with a fine goal in a friendly at Sheffield Wednesday, Ayoze debuted competitively off the bench in our opening day home loss to Manchester City.

His first goal for the club came at Spurs and was followed by strikes against Liverpool, West Brom (home and away), Arsenal, Everton and Swansea - a fine haul for a player branded as "one for the future."

The form of Ayoze and his intelligent play was in stark contast to the more costly Emmanuel Riviere and while Papiss Cisse flattered to deceive as usual, the young Spaniard did his bit to avoid relegation.

Newcastle's official website awarded their goal of the season accolade to him for a deft back-heeled effort at the Hawthorns, while he also won two Spanish U21 caps during his first campaign as a Magpie.

Unfortunately his six goals were unable to stop United tumbling into the Championship the following season.

However, Perez provided some vital goals in the promotion campaign, scoring twice against Preston to secure an instant return and grabbing a priceless winner at Brighton.

Top scorer in our first season back in the Premier League with eight after a brace in the last game of the season against Chelsea, he also netted twice in the FA Cup.

What proved to be his fifth and final season as a Magpie began slowly, taking 12 games before breaking his seasonal duck with a header against Watford.

That secured United's first league win of the season at the tenth attempt - Perez celebrating by sticking his fingers in both ears, a response to previous booing of him criticism on social media.

Improved results and displays followed as Perez began to gel with Salomon Rondon - another upturn coming with the arrival of fellow Spanish speaker Miguel Almiron in the January 2019 transfer window.

Ending the season with 13 goals in all competitions (his best at the club), that tally including a first hat-trick in Newcastle colours, at home to Southampton.

Ten days after confirmation came that Rafa Benitez was leaving his post, fellow Spaniard Perez confirmed his departure in July.

Despite links to Spanish sides, he joined Leicester City after the Foxes bid £30m to trigger a contractual release clause - having scored the winning goal at the King Power Stadium in both the previous two seasons.

His first City season brought eight goals in 40 games including a hat-trick in the 9-0 win at Southampton and of course a strike on his return to SJP.

Silverware followed the next season as the Foxes beat Chelsea at Wembley in the FA Cup Final, but the 2021/22 campaign was his least effective, Ayoze breaking his PL duck on the final day with a brace against favourite opponent, Southampton.

Remaining a peripheral figure, a mid-season loan exit to Real Betis was then followed by a permanent switch in summer 2023 after his Leicester contract had expired.

He left Betis for Villarreal in August 2024, signing a four-year deal, scoring 19 goals for the La Liga club in his first season.

His club form led to a first senior call-up to the Spanish national team - almost a decade after his last U21 cap - marking his debut against Andorra in June 2024 with a goal.

Selected for the Euro 2024 squad along with fellow former Magpies Mikel Merino and Joselu, Perez made one substitute appearance totaling 13 minutes against Italy as Spain won the tournament.

Having faced sub-standard opposition thus far in the shape of Norwich City (testimonial) and Lillestrom (Intertoto Cup), Glenn Roeder's side had a wake-up call at SJP from Ronald Koeman's Dutchmen.

Damien Duff debuted but his new colleagues were two down by the interval, with little to suggest that a revival was on the cards.

However, after conceding a third goal soon after the restart, a reshaped United team made a game of it and could have salvaged an unlikely draw in the final seconds.

After the 1-6 humiliation at Leyton Orient the previous Saturday, another League One side lined up to take a scalp at SJP.

A large and boisterous away support boosted the meagre midweek crowd and inevitably abused Newcastle captain-for-the-night, Alan Smith at every opportunity.

The best chances fell to the home side, but all to defenders, Ryan Taylor, Sebastien Bassong and Fabricio Coloccini all failing when well placed in front of goal.

2009 Sky Sports reported that United had accepted a £9m bid for Obafemi Martins from German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

Official confirmation was still awaited but it seemed that the somersaulting striker had done his last flip for us.

2013
There were further tales that United had withdrawn a second bid for Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis, which had failed to meet the French club's valuation.

Meanwhile, United's other alleged striking target, Loic Remy, was in pre-season training at QPR but had failed to appear in any of their five friendly fixtures.
