Update:
Defender deal claim

Saturday brought widespread reports that Newcastle are set to bolster their defensive options by completing the transfer of AC Milan centre half Malick Thiaw

A fee of £35m is said to have been accepted and personal terms agreed for the 24 year-old German international and former Rossoneri colleague of Sandro Tonali.

Asked about the player on Saturday, Eddie Howe didn't deny anything, saying only "let's see what happens."

Newcastle were credited with an interest in 6 foot 4 inches-tall Thiaw back in June 2024, before their abortive pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

While United were losing at home to Atletico Madrid on Saturday, Thiaw was making a substitute appearance in the latter stages of a 1-1 draw with Leeds United in Dublin.

They face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday but it's expected that the defender will instead depart and undergo his medical with the black and whites on Monday.

Dusseldorf native Thiaw began his senior career with Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in 2020, joining AC Milan two years later on a five year deal. His sale has looked likely during this window, Como making a failed bid recently.

Facing Newcastle - and Tonali - in the San Siro in 2023, a hamstring injury kept Malick out of the Champions League return meeting on Tyneside four months later.

All three of his senior international caps for Germany came back in 2023.

Summer Tyne blues

Newcastle  0  Atletico Madrid  2

Eddie Howe's side concluded a pretty miserable pre-season with defeat on Saturday; two second half goals seeing the Spaniards lift the Sela Cup at a sun-soaked Gallowgate.

Rather than that meaningless trinket however, of greater concern for the Magpies boss was the sight of Anthony Gordon limping off with a possible hamstring problem.

In the continued absence of Alexander Isak and with no recruits in sight, Gordon had led the line for much of the afternoon but was back in a more familiar wide role when tangling awkwardly with Nahuel Molina after 81 minutes.

Thankfully the player took to social media post-game to confirm he'd suffered no more than a twisted ankle.

The visitors started brighter with two early shots from distance that were off-target; former Madrid player Kieran Trippier making a timely 27th minute clearance.

A minute later Giuliano Simeone  should have done better with a shot across goal when he was free in the penalty area.

Trippier then had the chance to score at the other end with a free-kick in the 'D' but his firmly-hit shot was saved low down by Jan Oblak before Joelinton headed wide.

That was the first of a number of headed chances for the Brazilian that should have seen his side go ahead: flicking one effort off the crossbar before sending another one straight at Oblak.

Much of United's attacking in the later part of that first period stemmed the energetic bursts down the right by home debutant Anthony Elanga, who supplied several tempting crosses that sadly nobody could exploit.

Sven Botman was replaced at half-time by Alex Murphy in a scheduled substitution and five minutes later the Spaniards took the lead after a lightning break that began deep in their own half following a corner for the home side and an incisive forward pass from Thiago Almada.

Julian Alvarez raced over halfway with Sandro Tonali trailing in his wake and the Manchester City old boy headed to the back post to receive a return ball across the six yard box from Alex Baena and convert from close range.

Diego Simeone changed his entire team in the 61st minute and within two minutes they had doubled their lead when another counter-attack.

That ended with Alexander Sorloth threading a diagonal pass across the United area for Antoine Griezmann to beat Nick Pope expertly with the outside of his foot - the 'keeper reacting too slowly as he dived to his right in vain.

Pope made a fine save from 17 year-old midfielder Taufik Seidu six minutes from time before Gordon pulled up after chasing down the ball towards the centre circle.

He limped off after treatment and headed straight down the tunnel to round off a dismal day for a full house at SJP.

Atletico Madrid's win meant they lifted the Sela Cup, as did their women's side who had also defeated their Newcastle counterparts 2-0 earlier in the day.

Team: Pope, Ashby (Al.Harrison 61), Lascelles, Botman (A.Murphy 46), Livramento, Trippier (Shahar 87), Joelinton, Tonali, Elanga, Gordon (Neave 84), Barnes.
Subs n/u: Ruddy, Gillespie, Charlton, Kuol, Sanusi.

AMFC: Oblak (Musso 61), Llorente (Pubill 61), Normand (Seidu 61), Hancko (Lenglet 61), Ruggeri (Galan 61), Gallagher (Koke 61), Cardoso (Griezmann 61), Simeone (Molina 61), Baena (Monserrate 61), Almada (Sorloth 61), Alvares (Martin 61).
Subs n/u: de Luis, Gismera, Villafafila Heras.

Booked:
Hancko, Seidu.

Crowd: Rather obliquely, no crowd was announced but the club published a combined weekend crowd figure of 82,366.

On the basis that Friday's crowd of 30,782 was announced in the stadium, that makes Saturdays' turnout 51,584.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

On the absence of a goalscorer in his side:

"I think in the pre-season games, that would be a fair assessment. I don't think I'm thinking any different, but we can still win football matches.

"We need to turn the margins and the little things in our favour, so we need to look across the board at how we can get more goals into the team, and that's always been part of the coach's job, to find a way to win - that's what we've got to do.’

"I've always tried to keep a very balanced view on things, it's never as good as you think it is when you feel good, and it's never as bad as you think it is when you feel bad.

"At the moment, I'm very neutral. I’ve seen the challenges and I know the challenges that we face.

"This is new territory for us, but I also believe from those tough moments you can actually build something even more special, if you come out the other side, and that's a big if.

"So for me, the priority now is the players that we have fit and available, and making sure they're fully understanding of what's expected of them and making sure we're resilient enough to deal with a lot of outside noise, a lot of speculation on us, which through no fault of our own is negative, and we need to cut that out, and unite even stronger.’

On Anthony Gordon:

"We hope he's OK. I think it's an ankle twist. I did fear a muscle problem but I don't think that's the case."

On Sven Botman:

"That was the pre-game plan for him. I thought he came through it well. He's such a big player - we just need to keep him fit, so we're just managing his games."

On Alex Murphy:

"The loan spell (at Bolton Wanderers) last season was pivotal - he needed that exposure to match action. He's come back for pre-season and done well. He's been thrown into some challenging games and has always come out with credit. Let's see what comes next."

On makeshift midfielder Harrison Ashby:

"I think the biggest thing today is I liked his attitude. He attacked the position. He's very rarely played that position although he has trained there for us. It's a sign of our squad depth - we are stretched in midfield."

On Alexander Isak:

"I think everything is at play because he is contracted to us, he's our player.

"The club basically make the decision on his future. I don't know what that will be. Of course, I have a preferred outcome.

"I want the best and strongest squad possible, but also, I want players that really want to play for this football club.

"That
(decision) will be for other people to make. I think for me, I'm just trying to manage the situation and manage the team, most importantly.

"To manage the group of players that I'm working with day-to-day, that I love coaching and helping, and we're focusing on Aston Villa.

"Everything else, to a degree, from my perspective, is not in my control, so it's not my focus."

On whether he could convince Isak to stay:

"If it was that easy I'd be doing it, and I'd have done it yesterday, but it's not.

"I want him training and I want him playing for us. So I think by that you can see my want and wish. But from both sides, it has to be right."

Anthony Elanga
made his home debut for Newcastle.

Atletico became the first side to win a friendly fixture at Gallowgate since Germans FC Augsburg back in 2018.

This was Atletico's first-ever visit to SJP. The two sides met in a post-season friendly in Madrid back in 1956 with the Spaniards running out 4-1 winners.

Kieran Trippier faced his former club for the first time since leaving them in order to become a Magpie in 2022.

Having won the first two stagings of the competition in 2023 and 2024, Newcastle lost their grip on the Sela Cup.

Update:
Wissa missing again

Brentford continued their pre-season on Friday night with a 2-2 home draw against Borussia Munchengladbach, but that was achieved without forward Yoane Wissa.

The DR Congo international who turns 29 next month had returned to training with the Bees earlier in the week, but wasn't selected by head coach Keith Andrews.

Newcastle's interest in signing the player who remains under contract until 2026 (with a 12 month option after that) is no secret, but Brentford's interest in selling looks to hinge on their success in signing a replacement.

That is claimed to be Bournemouth's Dango Ouattara - who didn't feature as the Cherries drew 1-1 against Real Sociedad at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday teatime.

However the 23 year-old did reportedly take part in an earlier behind closed doors kickabout against Sociedad.

answer

While we've had our fair share of player autobiographies, the group of ex-Magpies who are also published fiction authors is an exclusive one - and to combine both of those careers with serving in the police force is surely a unique CV.

That latter part of his life influenced "Betrayed Trust", the debut book from former Newcastle United midfielder Tony Nesbitt, writing under the pen name Tom Hair.

Dark tales of misdeeds in his native Wearside inform the first DC Dan Kilford novel, Tony taking inspiration from colleagues and criminals alike encountered during his service.

An FA Youth Cup winner with United in 1985, Tony's senior playing career was decimated by injury and caused his radical employment shift. Read more about that in a chat with veteran journalist John Gibson here

We had copies of "Betrayed Trust" up for grabs
and asked which ground Tony's league debut for Newcastle away to Charlton Athletic came at.

It was Selhurst Park and among those who successfully answered were Michael Murphy and Keith Rainbow.

National League Cup:
Gateshead (a) on sale

Newcastle U21s have entered the National League Cup once again this season and will begin their Group Stage games this Wednesday (13th) at neighbours Gateshead.

It's a 7.30pm kick-off at the International Stadium and tickets are on sale now for just £5 (£2 U16s) from the home club online here. A limit of 1,000 fans has been imposed.

'Keeper on the move:
Dubravka deal done

Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has completed a permanent transfer to Burnley, moving for an unspecified fee and signing a contract of undisclosed duration.

The 36 year-old Slovakian international arrived on loan from Sparta Prague in January 2018 and debuted in a 1-0 home victory over Manchester United the following month.

Out of contract next summer, the last of Martin's 179 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies was the 1-2 FA Cup loss to Brighton at SJP last March. His final outing saw him beaten twice in 45 minutes away at Celtic in July.

He leaves SJP with two Carabao Cup winner's medals - despite not having played in a final. Unused on the bench against Liverpool in March, Martin was cup-tied for the defeat to Manchester United in 2023 - but eligible for silverware after appearing in an earlier round of the competition whilst on loan at the Red Devils.

Dubravka becomes a Claret following the departure of James Trafford to Manchester City earlier in the window. His exit from SJP leaves the number 1 squad number unallocated for the first time since he inherited it from Rob Elliot ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

PS: A further goalkeeping departure from Gallowgate looms, with Odysseas Vlachodimis set to complete a season-long loan switch to Seville in the coming days.

Update:
Sesk-no

Newcastle's latest attempt to sign a striker were thwarted when Manchester United completed the transfer of RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko on Saturday.

The Magpies had negotiated a claimed £70m fee with the Bundesliga club in recent days, but a rival bid from Old Trafford for the 22 year-old Slovenian international striker belatedly appeared - and was successful.

U21s:
Saints for starters

Newcastle's PL2 fixtures for the coming season have now been announced and can be read online here

The currently coachless U21s begin against Southampton at Whitley Park on Sunday week, August 17th (3pm).

Assuming no alterations, two of the away venues break new ground for United: Birmingham City U21s using Stratford Town and Crystal Palace U21s domiciled at Sutton United.

Isak timeline

Sun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Sun 18.05
Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than surgery was forecast.

Sun 25.05
Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.

Tue 27.05
Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to a minor injury, presumably groin.

Mon 14.07
Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for a week-long training camp.

Tue 15.07
The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.

Sat 19.07
Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming tour of Asia.

Mon 21.07
Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park but reportedly cut short the session.

(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)

Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.

Wed 23.07
Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace) Isak.

Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club".

The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial status.

Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would remain a Newcastle player.

Sun 27.07
Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.

Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.

Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak and he remained a Magpie.

Wed 30.07 Spanish media claims Isak is training alone in San Sebastian.

Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.

Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train separately from the rest of the senior squad.

Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol, Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.

2025/26:
TV times

The Premier League have confirmed their live TV picks for September, with one Newcastle game rescheduled:

Sat 13.09.2025 Wolves (h) 3pm no live UK TV
Sat 20.09.2025 Bournemouth (a) 3pm no live UK TV
Sun 28.09.2025 Arsenal (h) 4.30pm Sky

The Arsenal game falls between Newcastle's midweek Carabao Cup Third Round tie* and the second round of Champions League fixtures, spread across Tuesday September 30th and Wednesday October 1st.

With reference to the Bournemouth away game, just because it hasn't been selected for live TV, that doesn't confirm 100% that it will be a 3pm Saturday kick-off.

The first round of Champions League fixtures take place on the preceding Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: were Newcastle to be in action on the Thursday, that would result in the Bournemouth game moving to the Sunday.

While the Spurs v Wolves game picked for Sky on Sunday 28th is liable to change if Spurs are playing a Champions League tie on the 30th, there's no similar advice regarding our game v Arsenal on the same day - reason unknown.

The situation mirrors for our game regardless of that: were ourselves or Arsenal to be playing in the Champions League on the 30th then we would not meet in the PL on the 28th.

So in real terms, only the Wolves game is now confirmed, with the other three liable to possible change in the days following the Champions League draw on August 28th.

* that is split over two successive midweeks, with teams involved in the Champions League assured of playing their Carabao Cup tie during second of the two weeks.

There are no scheduled rail works between London Kings Cross on the day of the Arsenal game. For once.

The Bournemouth game looks unaffected by rail engineering work on the Saturday. Were it to be played on the Sunday, trains would still run direct to and from London but with average journey times extended by 45 minutes and trains not calling at either Basingstoke or Winchester.

Update:
New faces

Following confirmation of the appointment of Sudarshan Gopaladesikan as Newcastle United Technical Director, the vacant roles of Chief Executive Officer and Sporting Director are anticipated to be filled in the near future.

Several names have appeared in connection with both posts, but David Hopkinson is poised to become CEO in succession to Darren Eales, with Ross Wilson tipped to replace the now-departed Paul Mitchell as SD.

The 54 year-old Canadian Hopkinson had been in charge of the US-based Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation and was Global Head of Partnerships for Real Madrid between 2018 and 2020.

He also had an earlier involvement with sports teams in Toronto, which included MLS side Toronto FC.

41 year-old Scotsman Wilson meanwhile remains in post at Nottingham Forest, having held a similar position at Rangers until tempted across the border in 2023.

On This Day in History
9th August

Born Or Died:

1896 William Cowan born, Edinburgh, Scotland. (1923-26)

Inside right signed from Dundee in July 1923 who debuted in a 2-2 home draw with Sheffield United that September - missing the start of the season due to illness.

Beginning his career with Tranent before joining Dundee in 1920, Billy was on the verge of national team selection after impressing in a trial match, but had been forced to withdraw through injury.

A regular starter, Cowan played in all but one of United's nine FA Cup ties in his first season at the club, including a 2-0 win over Aston Villa in the FA Cup Final at Wembley.

Put on the transfer list at his own request during March 1926, Billy's final game for the club was a 3-0 home victory over West Bromwich Albion a month later.

Moving on to Manchester City that August in exchange for a £3,000 fee, Cowan lasted there just one season before returning to his native Scotland with St.Mirren.

Later moves took him to Peebles Rovers, Northfleet, North Shields, Hartlepools United, Darlington and Bath City before hanging up his boots during 1933.

His one senior international cap for Scotland, came against England in a 1-1 draw at Wembley Stadium in April 1924.

Later living in Gosforth, Billy passed away in a nursing home during January 1965.

1915 Tom Swinburne born, East Rainton, Durham. (1934-47)

Goalkeeper signed from Herrington Colliery Welfare who made his debut in a 4-1 home victory over Blackpool in September 1934.

Remaining at SJP after the outbreak of WW2,  Tom joined the RAF in 1941 and appeared for United when on leave.

Appeared in his final first team game in June 1947, Swinburne later played for non-league sides Consett and Horden Colliery.

A keen cricketer and member of the East Rainton team, Tom passed away in 1969 and is buried at West Rainton.

August 9th 2015 saw Tom's son Trevor Swinburne lay flowers in the Gallowgate End goalmouth ahead of the home game with Southampton, in commemoration of his late fathers' 100th birthday.

1973 Death of William Aitken, 79.

Newcastle lost their season opener at a sun-soaked Upton Park following an enforced substitution before the hosts took a corner kick.

David Craig was led from the field with a hamstring pull and as Alan Duffy replaced him for only his second senior outing, Harry Redknapp's flag kick was thumped home by Geoff Hurst for the game's only goal.

Jack Charlton's side came to SJP and took the point that made them group winners.

A 48th minute streaker seemed to have inspired the hosts but David Armstrong's equaliser was enough to end United's involvement in the competition.

The smoggies went on to lift the trophy after winning a two legged semi against Mansfield and a two-legged final against Fulham.

Newcastle provided the opposition at Croft Park in a testimonial game for Spartan stalwarts Eddie Alder and Ronnie Scott, but only Alder was in action, with Scott having cartilage surgery in hospital.

Former Spartan Alan Shoulder scored, but Les Mutrie equalised.

Local youngster Robin Armstrong played for the full game for United as a centre back, but was never to feature for the senior team.

Sulky South American Alex Sabella strutted his funky stuff for the visitors while United's Dutch trialist Frans Koenen did enough to earn a permanent transfer from NEC Nijmegen.

Manager Bill McGarry wasn't present though, having gone to watch Peterborough United against Fulham before making a failed bid for Posh midfielder Billy Kellock.

Team: Carr, Kelly, Davies, Cartwright, Boam, Carney, Walker, Shinton, Clarke, Wharton (Rafferty 70), Koenen.

When Gavin Peacock scored twice just before half time to make it 3-0, United's victory in the final of the four team Exhibition Super Challenge Trophy at Gallowgate looked beyond doubt.

However, a second half revival from Sporting - aided by laughable defending from Brian Kilcine - saw Balakov and Filipe braces plus one from Celtic-bound Jorge Cadete confirm silverware for Bobby Robson's side.

Team: Wright, Ranson, Stimson, Howey, Kilcline, Scott (McDonough 67), Carr, Peacock, Quinn, Clark, Sheedy.

The Magpies were victims of their own generosity again, going to Anfield for Ronnie Whelan's benefit match on the eve of the season and losing a crucial player in the process.

£1.5m signing from Everton, Peter Beardsley was disgracefully assaulted by Neil Ruddock after just two minutes, sustaining a triple fracture of his cheekbone.

The injury was of such seriousness that for a time the United man considered lodging assault charges against his assailant.

To complete a poor night, Beresford missed a 48th minute penalty when confronted with the might of substitute 'keeper Mike Hooper.

Team: Srnicek, Watson, Beresford, Bracewell, Scott, Howey, Lee, Beardsley (Neilson 5), Cole, Clark, Papavasiliou.

A rare headed goal from Peter Beardsley won it for United on a glorious sunny evening at Tynecastle.

Among the interested onlookers was 'keeper Shaka Hislop, who had joined the Magpies earlier that day and journeyed North to meet his new colleagues for the first time.

SJP old boy John Robertson was in the home side, as he had been for our previous visits here in August 1987 and July 1992 (his time in Toon came between).

Team: Srnicek, Hottiger (Clark 72), Beresford, Barton (Fox 75), D.Peacock, Elliott, Lee, Beardsley, Kitson (Sellars 64), Gillespie (Watson 75), Ginola.

Following a three game tour of South East Asia, Kevin Keegan brought his side to Sincil Bank for a match arranged as part of the deal which took Darren Huckerby to Newcastle.

Injury prevented Huckerby from playing, but the headlines were grabbed by Alan Shearer, who scored on his Magpies debut.

That goal came when a handball in the area was punished by referee Neale Barry with the award of a first half penalty.

Shearer stepped up to send Imps 'keeper Barry Richardson the wrong way, both players having previously been with Cramlington Juniors.

Les Ferdinand missed out with flu, while Robbie Elliott was omitted as he looked set to join Blackburn Rovers. However he ultimately elected to remain at Gallowgate.

Team: Srnicek (Hislop 46), Watson, Beresford (Barton 46), Batty, Howey (Holland 68), Albert, Lee (Clark 46), Beardsley (Asprilla 46), Shearer, Gillespie (Kitson 74), Ginola.

Shay Given, Alessandro Pistone, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Stuart Pearce and Temuri Ketsbaia all debuted for United in this season opener, with Alan Shearer sidelined after a serious ankle injury days earlier.

Tomasson had the chance to make a dream start to his SJP career when one on one with Owls 'keeper Kevin Pressman in the opening seconds - only to shoot weakly.

Tino Asprilla hammered home the opener seconds later and would later whip the ball of Tomasson's toes to scorer his second goal.

In between, Benito Carbone had acrobatically equalised for Wednesday (clad in a rotten orange kit) and Tomasson had two more efforts chalked off.

After kicking off with a 0-1 home loss to Aston Villa that saw Alan Shearer dismissed, things got no better for Ruud's boys,  despite taking the lead at White Hart Lane.

Former Magpie Les Ferdinand injured himself in scoring and failed to reappear for the second half, but fellow Toon old boy David Ginola dominated midfield proceedings.

Chris Waddle made a guest appearance for Gateshead, who wore an all red kit.

An unmarked Damien Duff headed in a corner to equalise before Steven Taylor's header came back off the post for James Milner to lash in the added time winner.
