Update:
Malick wings in

Newcastle's third senior signing of the transfer window is all set for completion, with AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw en route to Tyneside from Italy on Sunday.

The 24 year-old German international will undergo his medical on Monday after a fee in the region of £35m was agreed with the Serie A side.

Malick follows Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale to SJP, where he'll be reunited with his former Rossoneri colleague Sandro Tonali.

Thiaw had featured briefly against Leeds United in Dublin on Saturday before returning to Milan while his colleagues faced Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Sky Italy then spoke to him as he prepared for fly back to England, telling them that:

"I want to thank everyone at AC Milan, I've learned a lot. The best memory? Our path to the Champions League semi-final. Newcastle? happy with the choice - I'm ready for the Premier League."

Asked about the player post-match on Saturday, Eddie Howe said only "let's see what happens."

Newcastle were credited with an interest in 6 foot 4 inches-tall Thiaw back in June 2024, before their abortive pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The Dusseldorf native began his senior career with Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in 2020, joining AC Milan two years later on a five year deal. His sale has looked likely during this window, Como making a failed bid recently.

Facing Newcastle - and Tonali - in the San Siro in 2023, a hamstring injury kept Malick out of the Champions League return meeting on Tyneside four months later.

Assuming that there are no hiccups, Thiaw will be the third German international to appear for United in the Premier League after Dietmar Ham
ann and Loris Karius. All three of his senior international caps came back in 2023.

Two further German-born players have also played for the club in that competition: Alan Neilson (who represented Wales) and Joselu (capped by Spain).

Newcastle  0  Atletico Madrid  2

Eddie Howe's side concluded a pretty miserable pre-season with defeat on Saturday; two second half goals seeing the Spaniards lift the Sela Cup at a sun-soaked Gallowgate.

Rather than that meaningless trinket however, of greater concern for the Magpies boss was the sight of Anthony Gordon limping off with a possible hamstring problem.

In the continued absence of Alexander Isak and with no recruits in sight, Gordon had led the line for much of the afternoon but was back in a more familiar wide role when tangling awkwardly with Nahuel Molina after 81 minutes.

Thankfully the player took to social media post-game to confirm he'd suffered no more than a twisted ankle.

The visitors started brighter with two early shots from distance that were off-target; former Madrid player Kieran Trippier making a timely 27th minute clearance.

A minute later Giuliano Simeone  should have done better with a shot across goal when he was free in the penalty area.

Trippier then had the chance to score at the other end with a free-kick in the 'D' but his firmly-hit shot was saved low down by Jan Oblak before Joelinton headed wide.

That was the first of a number of headed chances for the Brazilian that should have seen his side go ahead: flicking one effort off the crossbar before sending another one straight at Oblak.

Much of United's attacking in the later part of that first period stemmed the energetic bursts down the right by home debutant Anthony Elanga, who supplied several tempting crosses that sadly nobody could exploit.

Sven Botman was replaced at half-time by Alex Murphy in a scheduled substitution and five minutes later the Spaniards took the lead after a lightning break that began deep in their own half following a corner for the home side and an incisive forward pass from Thiago Almada.

Julian Alvarez raced over halfway with Sandro Tonali trailing in his wake and the Manchester City old boy headed to the back post to receive a return ball across the six yard box from Alex Baena and convert from close range.

Diego Simeone changed his entire team in the 61st minute and within two minutes they had doubled their lead when another counter-attack.

That ended with Alexander Sorloth threading a diagonal pass across the United area for Antoine Griezmann to beat Nick Pope expertly with the outside of his foot - the 'keeper reacting too slowly as he dived to his right in vain.

Pope made a fine save from 17 year-old midfielder Taufik Seidu six minutes from time before Gordon pulled up after chasing down the ball towards the centre circle.

He limped off after treatment and headed straight down the tunnel to round off a dismal day for a full house at SJP.

Atletico Madrid's win meant they lifted the Sela Cup, as did their women's side who had also defeated their Newcastle counterparts 2-0 earlier in the day.

Team: Pope, Ashby (Al.Harrison 61), Lascelles, Botman (A.Murphy 46), Livramento, Trippier (Shahar 87), Joelinton, Tonali, Elanga, Gordon (Neave 84), Barnes.
Subs n/u: Ruddy, Gillespie, Charlton, Kuol, Sanusi.

AMFC: Oblak (Musso 61), Llorente (Pubill 61), Normand (Seidu 61), Hancko (Lenglet 61), Ruggeri (Galan 61), Gallagher (Koke 61), Cardoso (Griezmann 61), Simeone (Molina 61), Baena (Monserrate 61), Almada (Sorloth 61), Alvares (Martin 61).
Subs n/u: de Luis, Gismera, Villafafila Heras.

Booked:
Hancko, Seidu.

Crowd: Rather obliquely, no crowd was announced but the club published a combined weekend crowd figure of 82,366.

On the basis that Friday's crowd of 30,782 was announced in the stadium, that makes Saturdays' turnout 51,584.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

On the absence of a goalscorer in his side:

"I think in the pre-season games, that would be a fair assessment. I don't think I'm thinking any different, but we can still win football matches.

"We need to turn the margins and the little things in our favour, so we need to look across the board at how we can get more goals into the team, and that's always been part of the coach's job, to find a way to win - that's what we've got to do.’

"I've always tried to keep a very balanced view on things, it's never as good as you think it is when you feel good, and it's never as bad as you think it is when you feel bad.

"At the moment, I'm very neutral. I’ve seen the challenges and I know the challenges that we face.

"This is new territory for us, but I also believe from those tough moments you can actually build something even more special, if you come out the other side, and that's a big if.

"So for me, the priority now is the players that we have fit and available, and making sure they're fully understanding of what's expected of them and making sure we're resilient enough to deal with a lot of outside noise, a lot of speculation on us, which through no fault of our own is negative, and we need to cut that out, and unite even stronger.’

On Anthony Gordon:

"We hope he's OK. I think it's an ankle twist. I did fear a muscle problem but I don't think that's the case."

On Sven Botman:

"That was the pre-game plan for him. I thought he came through it well. He's such a big player - we just need to keep him fit, so we're just managing his games."

On Alex Murphy:

"The loan spell (at Bolton Wanderers) last season was pivotal - he needed that exposure to match action. He's come back for pre-season and done well. He's been thrown into some challenging games and has always come out with credit. Let's see what comes next."

On makeshift midfielder Harrison Ashby:

"I think the biggest thing today is I liked his attitude. He attacked the position. He's very rarely played that position although he has trained there for us. It's a sign of our squad depth - we are stretched in midfield."

On Alexander Isak:

"I think everything is at play because he is contracted to us, he's our player.

"The club basically make the decision on his future. I don't know what that will be. Of course, I have a preferred outcome.

"I want the best and strongest squad possible, but also, I want players that really want to play for this football club.

"That
(decision) will be for other people to make. I think for me, I'm just trying to manage the situation and manage the team, most importantly.

"To manage the group of players that I'm working with day-to-day, that I love coaching and helping, and we're focusing on Aston Villa.

"Everything else, to a degree, from my perspective, is not in my control, so it's not my focus."

On whether he could convince Isak to stay:

"If it was that easy I'd be doing it, and I'd have done it yesterday, but it's not.

"I want him training and I want him playing for us. So I think by that you can see my want and wish. But from both sides, it has to be right."

Stats:

Anthony Elanga
made his home debut for Newcastle.

Atletico became the first side to win a friendly fixture at Gallowgate since Germans FC Augsburg back in 2018.

This was Atletico's first-ever visit to SJP. The two sides met in a post-season friendly in Madrid back in 1956 with the Spaniards running out 4-1 winners.

Kieran Trippier faced his former club for the first time since leaving them in order to become a Magpie in 2022.

Having won the first two stagings of the competition in 2023 and 2024, Newcastle lost their grip on the Sela Cup.

Update:
Wissa missing again

Brentford continued their pre-season on Friday night with a 2-2 home draw against Borussia Munchengladbach, but that was achieved without forward Yoane Wissa.

The DR Congo international who turns 29 next month had returned to training with the Bees earlier in the week, but wasn't selected by head coach Keith Andrews.

Newcastle's interest in signing the player who remains under contract until 2026 (with a 12 month option after that) is no secret, but Brentford's interest in selling looks to hinge on their success in signing a replacement.

That is claimed to be Bournemouth's Dango Ouattara - who didn't feature as the Cherries drew 1-1 against Real Sociedad at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday teatime.

However the 23 year-old did feature in a training ground kickabout against Sociedad earlier the same day.

Winning start for Aidan

Thee Magpies are on temporary postings as follows:

Aidan Harris (Coleraine):
The 18 year-old goalkeeper has made a half-season loan switch to the Northern Ireland League side. He kept a clean sheet on his debut as Coleraine beat Larne 1-0 at home in their season opener on Sunday.

Antonio Cordero (KVC Westerlo):

A 0-1 home loss to Mechelen in the Belgian Pro League on Saturday saw the forward appear as a 72nd minute replacement. The visitors netted an 84th minute winner.

Joe White (Leyton Orient):
The midfielder arrived in the 87th minute of a 2-0 home win over Wigan Athletic in League One on Saturday and only a fine save prevented his free kick extending the O's lead.

answer

While we've had our fair share of player autobiographies, the group of ex-Magpies who are also published fiction authors is an exclusive one - and to combine both of those careers with serving in the police force is surely a unique CV.

That latter part of his life influenced "Betrayed Trust", the debut book from former Newcastle United midfielder Tony Nesbitt, writing under the pen name Tom Hair.

Dark tales of misdeeds in his native Wearside inform the first DC Dan Kilford novel, Tony taking inspiration from colleagues and criminals alike encountered during his service.

An FA Youth Cup winner with United in 1985, Tony's senior playing career was decimated by injury and caused his radical employment shift. Read more about that in a chat with veteran journalist John Gibson here

We had copies of "Betrayed Trust" up for grabs
and asked which ground Tony's league debut for Newcastle away to Charlton Athletic came at.

It was Selhurst Park and among those who successfully answered were Michael Murphy and Keith Rainbow.

National League Cup:
Gateshead (a) on sale

Newcastle U21s have entered the National League Cup once again this season and will begin their Group Stage games this Wednesday (13th) at neighbours Gateshead.

It's a 7.30pm kick-off at the International Stadium and tickets are on sale now for just £5 (£2 U16s) from the home club online here. A limit of 1,000 fans has been imposed.

Old boy:
Mexico move for Maxi

Just over two years after leaving Newcastle, former Magpie Allan Saint-Maximin is on his third new club, travelling to Mexico after agreeing to sign for Club America.

Swapping Tyneside for Saudi Arabia in July 2023 when joining the Al Ahli club, the 28 year-old spent a year in Jeddah before securing a loan to Turks Fenerbahce.

Returning to Al Ahli when that deal expired, Maxi flew into Mexico City on Friday to seal a claimed £9m switch. He'll put pen to paper on a four year deal.

PS: Another SJP old boy with Mexican league experience is on the move. Florian Thauvin has joined Racing Club Lens in his native France, following a spell in Italy with Udinese. Now 32, Thauvin moved to Mexican side Tigres in 2021.

'Keeper on the move:
Dubravka deal done

Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has completed a permanent transfer to Burnley, moving for an unspecified fee and signing a contract of undisclosed duration.

The 36 year-old Slovakian international arrived on loan from Sparta Prague in January 2018 and debuted in a 1-0 home victory over Manchester United the following month.

Out of contract next summer, the last of Martin's 179 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies was the 1-2 FA Cup loss to Brighton at SJP last March. His final outing saw him beaten twice in 45 minutes away at Celtic in July.

He leaves SJP with two Carabao Cup winner's medals - despite not having played in a final. Unused on the bench against Liverpool in March, Martin was cup-tied for the defeat to Manchester United in 2023 - but eligible for silverware after appearing in an earlier round of the competition whilst on loan at the Red Devils.

Dubravka becomes a Claret following the departure of James Trafford to Manchester City earlier in the window. His exit from SJP leaves the number 1 squad number unallocated for the first time since he inherited it from Rob Elliot ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

PS: A further goalkeeping departure from Gallowgate looms, with Odysseas Vlachodimis set to complete a season-long loan switch to Seville in the coming days.

U21s:
Saints for starters

Newcastle's PL2 fixtures for the coming season have now been announced and can be read online here

The currently coachless U21s begin against Southampton at Whitley Park on Sunday week, August 17th (3pm).

Assuming no alterations, two of the away venues break new ground for United: Birmingham City U21s using Stratford Town and Crystal Palace U21s domiciled at Sutton United.

:
Isak timeline

Sun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Sun 18.05
Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than surgery was forecast.

Sun 25.05
Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.

Tue 27.05
Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to a minor injury, presumably groin.

Mon 14.07
Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for a week-long training camp.

Tue 15.07
The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.

Sat 19.07
Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming tour of Asia.

Mon 21.07
Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park but reportedly cut short the session.

(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)

Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.

Wed 23.07
Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace) Isak.

Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club".

The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial status.

Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would remain a Newcastle player.

Sun 27.07
Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.

Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.

Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak and he remained a Magpie.

Wed 30.07 Spanish media claims Isak is training alone in San Sebastian.

Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.

Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train separately from the rest of the senior squad.

Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol, Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.

2025/26:
TV times

The Premier League have confirmed their live TV picks for September, with one Newcastle game rescheduled:

Sat 13.09.2025 Wolves (h) 3pm no live UK TV
Sat 20.09.2025 Bournemouth (a) 3pm no live UK TV
Sun 28.09.2025 Arsenal (h) 4.30pm Sky

The Arsenal game falls between Newcastle's midweek Carabao Cup Third Round tie* and the second round of Champions League fixtures, spread across Tuesday September 30th and Wednesday October 1st.

With reference to the Bournemouth away game, just because it hasn't been selected for live TV, that doesn't confirm 100% that it will be a 3pm Saturday kick-off.

The first round of Champions League fixtures take place on the preceding Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: were Newcastle to be in action on the Thursday, that would result in the Bournemouth game moving to the Sunday.

While the Spurs v Wolves game picked for Sky on Sunday 28th is liable to change if Spurs are playing a Champions League tie on the 30th, there's no similar advice regarding our game v Arsenal on the same day - reason unknown.

The situation mirrors for our game regardless of that: were ourselves or Arsenal to be playing in the Champions League on the 30th then we would not meet in the PL on the 28th.

So in real terms, only the Wolves game is now confirmed, with the other three liable to possible change in the days following the Champions League draw on August 28th.

* that is split over two successive midweeks, with teams involved in the Champions League assured of playing their Carabao Cup tie during second of the two weeks.

There are no scheduled rail works between London Kings Cross on the day of the Arsenal game. For once.

The Bournemouth game looks unaffected by rail engineering work on the Saturday. Were it to be played on the Sunday, trains would still run direct to and from London but with average journey times extended by 45 minutes and trains not calling at either Basingstoke or Winchester.

Update:
New faces

Following confirmation of the appointment of Sudarshan Gopaladesikan as Newcastle United Technical Director, the vacant roles of Chief Executive Officer and Sporting Director are anticipated to be filled in the near future.

Several names have appeared in connection with both posts, but David Hopkinson is poised to become CEO in succession to Darren Eales, with Ross Wilson tipped to replace the now-departed Paul Mitchell as SD.

The 54 year-old Canadian Hopkinson had been in charge of the US-based Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation and was Global Head of Partnerships for Real Madrid between 2018 and 2020.

He also had an earlier involvement with sports teams in Toronto, which included MLS side Toronto FC.

41 year-old Scotsman Wilson meanwhile remains in post at Nottingham Forest, having held a similar position at Rangers until tempted across the border in 2023.

On This Day in History
10th August

Born Or Died:

1908 John James Murray born, Saltcoats, Scotland. (1932-36)

United signed wing half Murray from Glasgow Rangers in July 1932 in a £2.5K transfer and he debuted in a 5-1 home win over the smoggies that August.

A regular starter for the next three seasons, Murray was unable to prevent the Magpies sliding into Division Two in 1934 or mount a promotion charge the following campaign.

Falling from favour and losing the captaincy, Jimmy made his final appearance during a 1-4 home loss to Spurs in January 1936 and returned to Scotland with Albion Rovers the following August.

1967 Philippe Albert born, Bouillon, Belgium. (1994-99)

Belgian international defender / midfielder spotted by Magpies boss Kevin Keegan during the 1994 World Cup, where he netted against both Holland and Germany.

Albert completed a £2.65m transfer from Anderlecht at SJP on his 27th birthday, posing for photos with a suitable cake.

Making a winning start to life as a Magpie in a 3-1 success at Filbert Street, Philippe was soon back in his native Belgium as United destroyed Royal Antwerp by an aggregate margin of 10-2 in the UEFA Cup.

A knee injury sustained while training at Durham sidelined Albert for most of 1995 though - returning to score in successive games against Bristol City and Wimbledon.

He'll be remembered for the sublime chip over Peter Schmeichel that sealed a memorable 5-0 home victory over Manchester United - and an equally impressive brace against their rivals in a 3-3 draw at Maine Road.

Retaining his place under the stewardship of Kenny Dalglish, Albert was omitted from the squad for the 1998 FA Cup Final defeat but survived into the Ruud Gullit era, his final game a 0-1 loss at Everton that November.

United were happy to release him when Kevin Keegan enquired about a loan move to his Fulham side, then in the third tier.

Thirteen games and two goals helped the Cottagers to the Division Two title - one of those helping to beat Wigan Athletic at Craven Cottage, in the presence of none other than Michael Jackson.

A permanent switch failed to materialise though and instead there was a £600K move to former club Charleroi in July 1999.

Retiring a year later, Albert became a pundit for Belgian TV and can also be found working for a fruit & vegetable wholesaler in Charleroi.

When asked about his time in Toon, he said:

"When I speak about my career, the time at Newcastle was the best five years of my life. It was as if I was at home.

"It's true that at first I couldn't understand what the fans were saying, and I would have to just nod and smile, but after a while it was fine."

1968 Diaby Sekana born, Daloa, Ivory Coast. (1992)

March 1992 saw this Ivory Coast international defender on trial at Newcastle, featuring in a 2-0 reserve win over Manchester United at Gallowgate.

Sekana had captained his country the previous year in the African Nations Cup and was with French side Brest at the time.

Previously with RCF Paris and Lavel, he failed to win a deal on Tyneside and later continued his career in France with Louhans-Cuiseaux, Pau and Chateauroux.

Diaby signed for Turkish side Zeytinburnu in October 1996 but within a year had retired from playing.

Returning to France, he later coached at Pau, Oloron, FC Lons and FC Luy de Bearn.

What Else?

1910 Three weeks before their opening league game, Newcastle's players formed a cricket XI and travelled to Haltwhistle.

A good crowd saw goalkeeper Jimmy Lawrence take nine wickets for United as the hosts were all out for 132. However the footballers proved to be rather less adept with the bat and lost heavily.

The first game of what was to be a momentous season saw the return from injury of forward Albert Bennett.

Unfortunately, he lasted less than 40 minutes and twisted the same knee he had damaged the previous January.

Returning to action three months later, Albert managed just three more games before moving on to Norwich City in February 1969.

1968 Meanwhile, the reserves opened up their Central League campaign with a 2-3 loss at Preston. Alan Duffy got both goals.

A low profile pre-season home game would mark the end of Jack Charlton in the Manager's chair - resigning his post after 12 months at the club.

He claimed that the chanting of a couple hundred half-cut Gallowgate enders convinced him to leave - but it later emerged that he'd been close to quitting at the end of the previous season.

Much of the terrace anger was prompted by United's failure to invest in their squad, despite banking £590,000 for the sale of Chris Waddle to Spurs.

The last straw was a failure to agree terms with Ipswich Town's Eric Gates - who promptly joined the mackems for a fee of around £175,000 after they met his wage demands.

Charlton - who wasn't under contract at SJP - was quoted in the local papers as saying, "as far as I'm concerned, you can stick the Newcastle job".

1987 A pre-season visit by a Magpies XI to the Central Avenue ground of Northern Premier League side Worksop Town ended in a 2-2 draw.

All four goals came in the first half with Paul Watson and Kevin Scott on target.

Defying the UEFA ban, United were in Budapest to play in a four team tournament with local sides Ferencvaros and Videoton plus Belgians Cercle Bruges.

Videoton were United's first opponents in the Ulloi Uit stadium....and we were two down within 30 minutes.

The second half was a little better, as Liam O'Brien was felled in the box and Mark McGhee slotted in the resultant penalty.

The secretive nature of the match meant that only five United fans were present - their story is told here.

A reunion of former Magpies also took place, with the players welcomed on to the pitch and enjoying by a slap-up meal.

At least one of the boys of '69 was seen to be in need of assistance at the final whistle, having over-indulged on the hospitality....

2009 Jonas Gutierrez seemed likely to be on his way out of SJP after one season at the club. The winger was quoted as follows:

"My agent told me that the upcoming week is going to be crucial. He is expecting a new contact with Olympiakos on Monday.

I know about Olympiakos and that they are a huge club. They are the Boca Juniors or the River Plate of Greece.

"For me is a big challenge to play the Champions League. I have a lot of energy in me and I want to make a fantastic season in order to be with my national team in South Africa for the World Cup.

"I want to leave Newcastle and go to a club which will give me the chance to fight for this place in my national team. I believe if I play well in the Champions League then Maradona is going to take a look at me."

2010 A Magpies XI drew 2-2 with SPL side St.Mirren in a behind closed doors game at Darsley Park, Nile Ranger netting twice after the Buddies had taken a 0-2 lead.

United included teenage trialist Billy Knott but no deal was concluded and the former Chelsea player joined the mackems, where he impressed enough to earn a deal.

2011 Yohan Cabaye appeared for the final 23 minutes of France's 1-1 friendly draw with Chile in Montpelier - his fifth international cap.

Civil unrest cost Tim Krul the chance to win his third senior cap for Holland; their friendly against England at Wembley Stadium cancelled on police advice as riots hit London.
