Update:
Malick
wings in
Newcastle's third senior signing of the transfer window is all set for
completion, with AC Milan defender Malick
Thiaw flying into Tyneside from Italy on
Sunday.
The 24 year-old German international will undergo his medical today after a fee in the region of £35m was agreed with the Serie A side.
Malick follows Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale to SJP, where he'll be
reunited with his former Rossoneri colleague Sandro Tonali.
Thiaw had featured briefly against Leeds United in Dublin on Saturday before
returning to Milan while his colleagues faced Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on
Sunday.
Sky Italy then spoke to him as he prepared for fly back to England,
telling them that:
"I want to thank everyone at AC Milan, I've learned a lot. The best
memory? Our path to the Champions League semi-final. Newcastle? happy with
the choice - I'm ready for the Premier League."
Asked about the player post-match on Saturday, Eddie Howe said
only "let's see what happens."
Newcastle were credited with an interest in 6 foot 4 inches-tall Thiaw back
in June 2024, before their abortive pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc
Guehi.
The Dusseldorf native began his senior career with Bundesliga side Schalke
04 in 2020, joining AC Milan two years later on a five year deal. His sale
has looked likely during this window, Como making a failed bid
recently.
Facing Newcastle - and Tonali - in the San Siro in 2023, a hamstring injury
kept Malick out of the Champions League return meeting on Tyneside four
months later.
Assuming that there are no hiccups, Thiaw will be the third German
international to appear for United in the Premier League after Dietmar Hamann
and Loris Karius. All three of his senior international caps came back in 2023.
Two further German-born players have also played for the club in that
competition: Alan Neilson (who represented Wales) and Joselu (capped by
Spain).

Pitch prediction
We've partnered with Pitch
Publishing, a sports book publisher with an already extensive range of
NUFC related titles and several more due for release later in 2025.

Published on Monday, "The
Battle for Newcastle United" is journalist Andrew Nagy's first book
- an autobiographical account of a lifetime following Newcastle United.
He recounts his story via a 27 game selection, starting with the teenage
optimism of the 1992 home win over Bristol City that began Kevin Keegan's
second spell and ending with the Champions League humbling of PSG on
Tyneside in 2023.
Without giving the game(s) away, Andrew's choices are memorable - but not
always for positive reasons. A cast of heroes and villains appear; Ned Kelly
and Sir Les are in there alongside JFK, the FCB and the bloke who liked
bacon.
To be in with a chance of winning a copy, we simply require you to
predict the full time score in Newcastle's Premier League opener at Aston
Villa this coming Saturday.

with your answer by 10am BST on Saturday August 16th, subject line of Pitch.

Update:
Youngster secured
Monday saw Newcastle confirm the signing of
England youth international captain Isaac Moran, after he refused an
offer to remain with Liverpool's academy.
The 16 year-old central defender/defensive midfielder will join up with
United's U18 squad as a first year scholar.
Moran's arrival comes after Oliver
Goodbrand and Alfie Hutchison were secured from Rangers during the close
season to augment Newcastle's academy ranks.
It's also claimed the Magpies have reached agreement to sign Muawiya Ghanem
from West Bromwich Albion - a 15 year-old midfielder.
United's U18s begin their league season on Saturday, hosting Blackburn
Rovers at Little Benton (12.30pm).
Update:
Wissa missing again
Brentford continued their
pre-season on Friday night with a 2-2 home draw against Borussia
Munchengladbach, but that was achieved without forward Yoane
Wissa.
The DR Congo international who turns 29 next month had returned to
training with the Bees earlier in the week, but wasn't selected by
head coach Keith Andrews.
Newcastle's interest in signing the player who remains under
contract until 2026 (with a 12 month option after that) is no
secret, but Brentford's interest in selling looks to hinge on their
success in signing a replacement.
That is claimed to be Bournemouth's Dango Ouattara - who didn't
feature as the Cherries drew 1-1 against Real Sociedad at the Vitality
Stadium on Saturday teatime.
However the 23 year-old did feature in a training ground kickabout against
Sociedad earlier the same day.
Also linked with Brentford (and Newcastle) over the weekend was
Rennes forward Arnaud Kalimuendo.

Ahead of this week's
season opener, United's youngsters suffered a friendly defeat behind closed
at Arsenal's London Colney HQ on Saturday morning.
Loan lads:
Winning start for Aidan
Three Magpies are on temporary postings as
follows:
Aidan Harris (Coleraine):
The 18 year-old goalkeeper has made a half-season loan switch to the
Northern Ireland League side. He kept a clean sheet on his debut as
Coleraine beat Larne 1-0 at home in their season opener on Sunday.
Antonio Cordero (KVC Westerlo):
A 0-1 home loss to Mechelen in the Belgian Pro League on Saturday saw the
forward appear as a 72nd minute replacement. The visitors netted an 84th
minute winner.
Joe White (Leyton
Orient):
The midfielder arrived in the 87th minute of a 2-0 home win over Wigan Athletic
in League One on Saturday and only a fine save prevented his free kick
extending the O's lead.
A fourth loan move is set for imminent completion, with goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimis
in Spain to complete a
season-long loan switch to Seville.
Avoiding relegation last season by one point means that there's no
European football for Seville this time round.

answer
While we've had our fair share
of player autobiographies, the group of ex-Magpies who are also published
fiction authors is an exclusive one - and to combine both of those careers
with serving in the police force is surely a unique CV.
That latter part of his life influenced "Betrayed Trust",
the debut book from former Newcastle United midfielder Tony Nesbitt,
writing under the pen name Tom Hair.
Dark tales of misdeeds in his native Wearside inform the first DC Dan
Kilford novel, Tony taking inspiration from colleagues and criminals alike
encountered during his service.
An FA Youth Cup winner with United in 1985, Tony's senior playing career was
decimated by injury and caused his radical employment shift. Read more about
that in a chat with veteran journalist John Gibson here
We had copies of "Betrayed Trust" up for grabs and
asked which ground
Tony's league debut for Newcastle away to Charlton Athletic came at.
It was Selhurst Park and among those who successfully answered were Michael
Murphy and Keith Rainbow.

National
League Cup:
Gateshead
(a)
Newcastle U21s have
entered the National League Cup once again this season and will begin their
Group Stage games this coming Wednesday at neighbours Gateshead.
It's a 7.30pm kick-off at the International Stadium and tickets are
on sale now for just £5 (£2 U16s) from the home club online here.
A limit of 1,000 fans has been imposed.
United are in Group D of the 32 team competition and after playing
Gateshead face visits to Boston United, Scunthorpe United and
Halifax Town before the turn of the year.
If ties are drawn after 90 minutes each team gets a point and a
penalty shootout takes place for an extra point.
Leeds United, Boro and the mackems make up our group, but along with
ourselves only come up against the four National League teams, not
each other.
Now managed by ex-Magpie Alun Armstrong, the Tynesiders suffered a
0-3 home loss to Southend United in their National League season
opener on Saturday.
Following Wednesday's game, the U21s begin their PL2
fixture progamme on Sunday, when
Southampton
are the visitors to Whitley Park this coming Sunday at 3pm.
Old
boy:
Mexico move for Maxi
Just over two years
after leaving Newcastle, former Magpie Allan Saint-Maximin is
on his third new club, travelling to Mexico after agreeing to sign
for Club America.
Swapping Tyneside for Saudi Arabia in July 2023 when joining the Al
Ahli club, the 28 year-old spent a year in Jeddah before securing a
loan to Turks Fenerbahce.
Returning to Al Ahli when that deal expired, Maxi flew into Mexico
City on Friday to seal a claimed £9m switch. He'll put pen to paper
on a four year deal.
PS: Another SJP old boy with Mexican league experience is on the
move. Florian Thauvin has joined Racing Club Lens in his
native France, following a spell in Italy with Udinese. Now 32,
Thauvin moved to Mexican side Tigres in 2021.

Meltdown:
Isak timeline
Sun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League
goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at
Brighton.
Sun 18.05 Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told
the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than
surgery was forecast.
Sun 25.05 Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to
Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.
Tue 27.05 Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to
a minor injury, presumably groin.
Mon 14.07 Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for
a week-long training camp.
Tue 15.07 The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they
were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.
Sat 19.07 Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the
media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more
training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming
tour of Asia.
Mon 21.07 Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park
but reportedly cut short the session.
(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)
Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane
Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.
Wed 23.07 Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo
Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace)
Isak.
Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media
outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move
away from the club".
The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an
extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per
week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial
status.
Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a
basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's
thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would
remain a Newcastle player.
Sun 27.07 Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there
was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.
Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.
Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak
and he remained a Magpie.
Wed 30.07 Spanish media claims Isak is training alone in San
Sebastian.
Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.
Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train
separately from the rest of the senior squad.
Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol,
Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No
disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.
2025/26:
TV times
The Premier League have confirmed their live TV
picks for September, with one Newcastle game rescheduled:
Sat 13.09.2025 Wolves (h) 3pm no live UK TV
Sat 20.09.2025 Bournemouth (a) 3pm no live UK TV
Sun 28.09.2025 Arsenal (h) 4.30pm Sky
The Arsenal game falls between Newcastle's midweek Carabao Cup Third
Round tie* and the second round of Champions League fixtures, spread across
Tuesday September 30th and Wednesday October 1st.
With reference to the Bournemouth away game, just because it hasn't been
selected for live TV, that doesn't confirm 100% that it will be a 3pm
Saturday kick-off.
The first round of Champions League fixtures take place on the preceding
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: were Newcastle to be in action on the
Thursday, that would result in the Bournemouth game moving to the
Sunday.
While the Spurs v Wolves game picked for Sky on Sunday 28th is liable to
change if Spurs are playing a Champions League tie on the 30th, there's no
similar advice regarding our game v Arsenal on the same day - reason
unknown.
The situation mirrors for our game regardless of that: were ourselves or
Arsenal to be playing in the Champions League on the 30th then we would not
meet in the PL on the 28th.
So in real terms, only the Wolves game is now confirmed, with the other
three liable to possible change in the days following the Champions League
draw on August 28th.
* that is split over two successive midweeks, with teams involved in the
Champions League assured of playing their Carabao Cup tie during second of
the two weeks.
There are no scheduled rail works between London Kings Cross on the day of
the Arsenal game. For once.
The Bournemouth game looks unaffected by rail engineering work on
the Saturday. Were it to be played on the Sunday, trains would still run direct
to and from London but with average journey times extended by 45 minutes and
trains not calling at either Basingstoke or Winchester.

From Sky Sports, Newcastle's

Born Or Died:
1971 Mike Jeffrey born, Liverpool.
(1993-95)

Striker/midfielder acquired from Doncaster Rovers by Kevin Keegan
in October 1993 at a cost of £85K, plus reserve David Roche.
The son of Rovers legend Alick, Mike began his career at Bolton Wanderers in
1989 before joining Donny three years later.
Netting against United during a pre-season friendly at Belle Vue in August 1992
brought Jeffrey on to KK's radar, although it took over a year for a deal to be
concluded.
Netting in reserve games against York City and Wolves soon after his arrival,
Mike's senior debut came in place of Scott Sellars in a 2-1 at Spurs in December
1993.
Not called upon again until an away defeat to Manchester City the following
April, the highlight of Jeffrey's career came at Maine Road the following
season when he netted during a League Cup tie.
However, that proved to be his final first team appearance, with the signing of
Paul Kitson pushing him further down the SJP striker pecking order.
Signing off with a hat trick against Mansfield Town reserves and a brace in the
Senior Cup Final win over Blyth, Rotherham United paid £100K for his services in June 1995.
A first team regular at Millmoor, five goals in 22 appearances prompted
interest from Fortuna Sittard and he moved to Holland midway through his first
season.
Four years at Sittard culminated in a Dutch FA Cup Final appearance in 1999,
although Jeffrey's side were beaten 0-2 by Ajax.
Joining Kilmarnock on a free transfer the following season, Jeffrey ended his
playing days at Grimsby Town, going on loan to Scunthorpe United in
2002.
Joining his family's car sales business back on Merseyside,
Mike also played local amateur football.

1979 Paul Talbot born, Gateshead.
(1995-2000)

Full-back who failed to force his way into the senior squad and
was released by United in March 2000, signing for York City.
Having made six appearances in League Two for the Minstermen, Talbot wasn't
retained and left Bootham Crescent that summer, signing for hometown club
Gateshead.
Later spells with Burton Albion and Queen of the South before returning to the
region with Spennymoor United.
Paul later appeared for
Newcastle Benfield, Durham City, Gateshead (again) Newcastle Blue
Star, Bedlington Terriers, Sunderland RCA, Harrogate Town, South Shields and
latterly Benfield again.

What Else?
1965 A young Magpies
XI lost 2-3 to Hartlepools United in front of 3,432 fans
at the Victoria Ground.
Peter Noble and Joe Butler netted for the visitors,
but an own goal by Bob Moncur ultimately won it for the
hosts.
Newcastle fielded a trialist named only as Arica in
the second half, contemporary reports calling him "a
Turkish student."

The Magpies began their pre-season with a visit to
Ayresome Park and a friendly against Jack Charlton's Boro
side.
Future Magpies Stuart Boam and David Mills played for Boro,
while a head injury to United 'keeper Iam McFaul saw
rookie Tony Bell play for half an hour while McFaul had
two stitches inserted in the wound before returning.
Team: McFaul (Bell 16 [McFaul 46]), Craig, Clark,
McDermott, Howard, Moncur, Cassidy, Smith, Macdonald,
Tudor, Hibbitt.
Subs also used: Nattrass, Gibb, Kennedy.

This game saw a debut for Keith Armstrong, a forward
who joined United from Sunderland on a non-contract basis
but wasn't retained.
However, manager Bill McGarry wasn't there to see it,
preferring to go scouting at the Carlisle United versus
Wrexham match.
Armstrong went on to play for various Finnish teams before
moving into management in that country with HJK Helsinki
in 2001.
Among the Sparta squad was Louis Van Gaal, who returned to
SJP in charge of Barcelona almost two decades later.
Team: Hardwick (Carr 46), Brownlie, Barton, Bird (tbc),
Davies, Martin, Armstrong, Pearson (Lever), Shoulder,
Withe, Hibbitt.
Subs (usage tbc): Nicholson, Mulgrove,

After visiting Greenock and Kilmarnock, United's
low-key tour of Scotland reached the Maryhill district of

At this point, Arthur Cox's side were preparing for a
Second Division campaign without the presence of Kevin
Keegan - whose arrival wouldn't be announced for another
week.
Team: Carr,

24 hours after beginning their pre-season games with a
6-1 win at Hamburg Altona, United helped their lower
league hosts christen a new stadium.
A live TV engagement saw Kevin Keegan arrive at the venue
by helicopter 30 minutes before kick-off. Kevin Carr saved
a 62nd minute penalty from Bendler.
Team: Thomas

Clarke, Carney (Ferris), Keegan, McDonald, Varadi,

1984
A Magpies XI visited Ashington's Portland Park as part of
the Colliers' Centenary celebrations, recording a 7-0

A much improved Newcastle performance secured third
place in the four team Tournament held in Budapest.
Team:
Burridge, Aitken, Sweeney (Stimson), Scott, Ranson, Dillon
(O’Brien), Simpson, Askew, Gallacher, McGhee
(Quinn), Brazil (Sloan).
(John Anderson travelled with the squad but failed to
participate after a fallout with United boss Jim Smith).
United's cause was helped when the Belgians were reduced
to ten men after Iovino was dismissed for whacking Neil
Simpson.
Mark Stimson opened the scoring with a header which went
in via both posts and O'Brien rounded the keeper to seal
victory.
The tournament was won by hosts Ferencvaros, who beat
fellow Hungarians Videoton 4-3 on penalties after the
final had ended in a 1-1 draw.
The secretive nature of the match meant that only five
United fans were present -
their story is told here.
1991
A reserve XI defeated Coldstream 3-0, with Archie Gourlay
getting two and Anth Cole the other.
United's appearance was arranged by then Magpies Chairman
George Forbes (a Coldstream resident) to christen new
clubhouse, changing rooms and re-laid playing surface at
Home Park.

The Charity Shield, although their wasn't much bloody
charity about it, as the reigning champions taught
Newcastle something of a footballing lesson.
As the dispirited Toon supporters left the stadium, a
cloudburst gave them a good soaking, and roadworks up the
A1 completed the misery, causing hours of delays.
Future Magpies Nicky Butt and Ronny Johnsen appeared for
the Red Devils, the former finding the net during the
first half.
Team: Srnicek,
Watson, Peacock, Albert, Beresford, Beardsley (Asprilla

Rob Lee's testimonial game attracted a poor
attendance, partly attributable to the box office allure
of Bilbao - on a weekend when Barcelona were elsewhere.
However, many folks begrudged forking out £20 for a
kickabout which came midway between competitive Intertoto
Cup home games - for which the admission was £15.
The principal onfield attraction proved to be the Magpies
debut of Laurent Robert, but he confirmed later that a
foot injury had partly restricted his contributions.
All in all, a less-than-fitting tribute to one of our best
recent signings of the 1990s. There again, Lee hadn't
completed ten years at the club anyway, so wasn't really
entitled to this!

2004 Newcastle defender
Titus Bramble needed a scan to assess the severity of a
hamstring injury incurred in training.
That put him out of the season
opener at Boro, along with Jonathan Woodgate. And given
that Andy O'Brien hadn't trained due to conjunctivitis and
Steven Taylor wasn't thought to be ready, an unlikely
pairing of Aaron Hughes and Robbie Elliott seemed
to be the only choice open to Sir Bobby.
