National League Cup:
International rescue

Gateshead  3  Newcastle U21s  4

Newcastle U21s began their National League Cup Group Stage campaign on Monday night over the River Tyne against Gateshead with a remarkable late victory at the International Stadium.

The hosts went ahead in the 11th minute when Kain Adom shot home from distance.

But the young Magpies equalised four minutes later after a neat passing move involving Ciaran Thompson, Trevan Sanusi and Leo Shahar ended with a low cross from the right finished first time by Sean Neave.

However, parity was short-lived and Gateshead went 2-1 up in the 21st minute when Kyle Hurst centred from the right and Harrison Chapman scored with a smart flicked finish from inside the six yard box.

Four minutes after the interval the home side extended their lead, Callum Bone steering a low shot under Adam Harrison.

A period of Toon pressure ended with substitute Fitzgerald picking up a loose ball on the edge of the box and placing a low shot into the far corner of the goal.

Seven minutes later Neave almost equalised when his attempted lob from outside the box hit the crossbar with the goalkeeper stranded.

However, it was 3-3 after Neave got to the left byline and his pull back ended up in the back of the net via Gateshead's Kenton Richardson with Shahar ready to pounce.

And the visitors took the lead in the 90th minute when Shahar's free kick from out on the right touchline was forcefully headed home by Cathal Heffernan.

Team: Harrison, Shahar, McArthur, Heffernan, Thompson, Bailey, Sanusi, Munda, Neave (Brayson 90+6), Kuol (Fitzgerald 56), Charlton (Bryant 78).
Subs n/u: Taylor, Watts, Yildiz, Harper.

GFC: Shelvey, Flint (Richardson 67), Williams, Trialist (Milmore 68), Lynn, Home (John 34) , Bone, Sheaf, Hurst, Adom (Lowery 57), Chapman (Thompson 57).
Subs n/u: Brooks, Doyle.

Booked: Sheaf, John, Thompson.

United are in Group D of the 32 team competition and now face visits to Boston United, Scunthorpe United and Halifax Town before the turn of the year.

Leeds United, Boro and the mackems make up our group, but along with ourselves only come up against the four National League teams, not each other.

Group D fixtures are already in progress, results as follows:

Boston United 2-0 Boro U21s
Boston United 4-0 Leeds United U21s
Scunthorpe United 2-3 mackem U21s

Now managed by ex-Magpie Alun Armstrong, the Tynesiders suffered a 0-3 home loss to Southend United in their National League season opener on Saturday.

Following this game, the U21s begin their PL2 fixture progamme on Sunday, when Southampton are the visitors to Whitley Park at 3pm.

Update:
Midfielder
deal looms

Update: The Times report that the Ramsey transfer is now close to completion, with personal terms under discussion and a medical set to be scheduled. The fee is £38m.

Earlier: While United's pursuit of Brentford forward Yoane Wissa remains ongoing, fresh claims of progress on a deal for Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey surfaced on Tuesday.

The 24 year-old midfielder was a team mate of Anthony Gordon at the European U21 championships in 2023, although injury saw him miss England's Final victory.

A £40m fee is claimed by the Mail, with Sky repeating previous claims that Unai Emery's side need to finalise a player sale in this window to ensure FFP compliance.

14 goals in 136 Premier League appearances since 2020 for Villa Academy graduate Ramsey include an effort against Newcastle at Villa Park in 2023.

PS: Hopes of advancing the Wissa deal rose on Wednesday with claims that Bournemouth were closing in on signing Bayer Leverkusen forward Amine Adli.

Completion of that transfer would allow the Cherries to sell  Dango Ouattara to the Bees, releasing Wissa in turn to complete the deal in place making him a Magpie.

Update:
Toon called Malick!

Newcastle's third senior arrival of the window was confirmed on Tuesday evening, AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw completing a permanent move for a claimed £35m fee.

The German international
flew into Tyneside from Italy on Sunday, 48 hours after celebrating his 24th birthday. Completing his medical on Monday, he's available for Saturday's Premier League season opener at Aston Villa.

Malick follows Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale to SJP, reuniting with former Rossoneri colleague Sandro Tonali.

Thiaw had featured briefly against Leeds United in Dublin on Saturday before returning to Milan while his colleagues faced Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Newcastle were credited with an interest in the 6 foot 4 inch-tall defender back in June 2024, before their abortive pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The Dusseldorf native began his senior career with Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in 2020 (who have a claimed 10% sell-on clause), joining AC Milan two years later on a five year deal.

Facing Newcastle - and Tonali - in the San Siro in 2023, a hamstring injury kept Malick out of the Champions League return meeting on Tyneside four months later.

Thiaw will become the third German international to appear for United in the Premier League after Dietmar Ham
ann and Loris Karius. All three of his senior international caps came back in 2023.

Two further German-born players have also played for the club in that competition: Alan Neilson (who represented Wales) and Joselu (capped by Spain).

And as Thiaw arrives, another German-born player bids Auf Wiedershen to SJP; Stuttgart-born goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimis heading out on loan to Seville.

The Greek international made just one competitive senior appearance as a Magpie, playing 45 minutes against AFC Wimbledon in the League Cup.

Update:
Isak: stand-off continues

Following some conciliatory media comments on Monday to the effect that Alexander Isak was set to remain at United beyond the current transfer window, Tuesday saw those claims rowed back on by influential outlets.

Most notable was David Ornstein's restating of the player's stance via social media: "Alexander Isak adamant he will not play for Newcastle again. Even if window closes without exit 25yo views #NUFC career over + no wish to reintegrate. Club say not for sale but exploring market amid Liverpool interest & striker wants."

No second bid for the player from Liverpool has been received since their initial offer of £110m was dismissed.

Attempts to stimulate interest from continental clubs meanwhile are yet to harvest anything meaningful.

Update:
Pope on pole

Newcastle have confirmed squad numbers for this season, with the only major change seeing Nick Pope inherit the number 1 shirt from the departed Martin Dubravka.

Lewis Hall is assigned the previously-vacant number 3 that he wore in pre-season, while Malick Thiaw takes 12.

The other new arrivals had already sported their allocated numbers in kickabouts.

The number 14 shirt remains in the possession of a certain Swede and for the first time in the Premier League there's nobody wearing 9*

Find squad numbers and other details online here

* thanks to those who correctly pointed out that the 2009/10 season saw the 9 shirt lie idle, following the hasty departure of Obafemi Martins after the 1-6 pre-season defeat at Leyton Orient.

Departure:
Oddy off the books

Tuesday brought confirmation that Newcastle goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos has made a season-long loan switch to Spanish side Seville.

It's reported that deal for the Greek international has no option for a permanent switch and that the majority of his wages will continue to be paid by the Magpies.

Avoiding relegation last season by one point means that there's no European football for Seville this time round.

Vlachodimos was an unexpected arrival at SJP from Nottingham Forest 12 months ago as both clubs sought to comply with PSR requirements and made just a single competitive appearance - in the Carabao Cup.

Pitch prediction

We've partnered with Pitch Publishing, a sports book publisher with an already extensive range of NUFC related titles and several more due for release later in 2025.

Published on Monday, "The Battle for Newcastle United" is journalist Andrew Nagy's first book - an autobiographical account of a lifetime following Newcastle United.

He recounts his story via a 27 game selection, starting with the teenage optimism of the 1992 home win over Bristol City that began Kevin Keegan's second spell and ending with the Champions League humbling of PSG on Tyneside in 2023.

Without giving the game(s) away, Andrew's choices are memorable - but not always for positive reasons. A cast of heroes and villains appear; Ned Kelly and Sir Les are in there alongside JFK, the FCB and the bloke who liked bacon.

To be in with a chance of winning a copy, we simply require you to
predict the full time score in Newcastle's Premier League opener at Aston Villa this coming Saturday.

Email [email protected] with your answer by 10am BST on Saturday August 16th, subject line of Pitch

PS: Andrew Nagy is signing his books at Waterstones in Newcastle from 1pm on Saturday week, August 23rd.

ston Villa (a)

The Magpies begin their Premier League campaign on the road at Villa Park this coming Saturday.

That's a 12.30pm kick-off, live on TNT Sports.

As was the case last season, anyone planning on taking a flag into the away end needs prior permission from Villa.

A photo of the flag, dimensions and a copy of the fire safety certificate must be emailed

Team: Joe Willock misses out through injury. Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale and Malick Thiaw are all eligible to make their PL debuts for the club.

Eddie Howe is set to return to the away dugout at Villa Park after missing United's 1-4 loss there in April due to illness.

Update:
Youngster secured

Monday saw Newcastle confirm the signing of England youth international captain Isaac Moran, after he refused an offer to remain with Liverpool's academy.

The 16 year-old central defender/defensive midfielder will join up with United's U18 squad as a first year scholar.

Moran's arrival comes after Oliver Goodbrand and Alfie Hutchison were secured from Rangers during the close season to augment Newcastle's academy ranks.

It's also claimed the Magpies have reached agreement to sign Muawiya Ghanem from West Bromwich Albion - a 15 year-old midfielder.

United's U18s begin their league season on Saturday, hosting Blackburn Rovers at Little Benton (12.30pm).

Athletic Bilbao (a) Primera Liga, Sunday.

Aidan Harris (Coleraine):
The 18 year-old goalkeeper has made a half-season loan switch to the Northern Ireland League side. He kept a clean sheet on his debut as Coleraine beat Larne 1-0 at home in their season opener on Sunday.

Antonio Cordero (KVC Westerlo):

A 0-1 home loss to Mechelen in the Belgian Pro League on Saturday saw the forward appear as a 72nd minute replacement. The visitors netted an 84th minute winner.

Joe White (Leyton Orient):
The midfielder arrived in the 87th minute of a 2-0 home win over Wigan Athletic in League One on Saturday and only a fine save prevented his free kick extending the O's lead.

Old boy:
Mexico move for Maxi

Just over two years after leaving Newcastle, former Magpie Allan Saint-Maximin is on his third new club, travelling to Mexico after agreeing to sign for Club America.

Swapping Tyneside for Saudi Arabia in July 2023 when joining the Al Ahli club, the 28 year-old spent a year in Jeddah before securing a loan to Turks Fenerbahce.

Returning to Al Ahli when that deal expired, Maxi flew into Mexico City and put pen to paper on a four year deal, belatedly confirmed on Tuesday at a cost of £9m.

PS: Another SJP old boy with Mexican league experience is on the move. Florian Thauvin has joined Racing Club Lens in his native France, following a spell in Italy with Udinese. Now 32, Thauvin moved to Mexican side Tigres in 2021.

Isak timeline

Sun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Sun 18.05
Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than surgery was forecast.

Sun 25.05
Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.

Tue 27.05
Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to a minor injury, presumably groin.

Mon 14.07
Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for a week-long training camp.

Tue 15.07
The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.

Sat 19.07
Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming tour of Asia.

Mon 21.07
Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park but reportedly cut short the session.

(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)

Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.

Wed 23.07
Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace) Isak.

Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club".

The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial status.

Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would remain a Newcastle player.

Sun 27.07
Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.

Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.

Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak and he remained a Magpie.

Wed 30.07 Spanish media claims Isak is training alone in San Sebastian.

Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.

Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train separately from the rest of the senior squad.

Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol, Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.

While we've had our fair share of player autobiographies, the group of ex-Magpies who are also published fiction authors is an exclusive one - and to combine both of those careers with serving in the police force is surely a unique CV.

That latter part of his life influenced "Betrayed Trust", the debut book from former Newcastle United midfielder Tony Nesbitt, writing under the pen name Tom Hair.

Dark tales of misdeeds in his native Wearside inform the first DC Dan Kilford novel, Tony taking inspiration from colleagues and criminals alike encountered during his service.

An FA Youth Cup winner with United in 1985, Tony's senior playing career was decimated by injury and caused his radical employment shift. Read more about that in a chat with veteran journalist John Gibson here

We had copies of "Betrayed Trust" up for grabs
and asked which ground Tony's league debut for Newcastle away to Charlton Athletic came at.

It was Selhurst Park and among those who successfully answered were Michael Murphy and Keith Rainbow.

2025/26:
TV times

The Premier League have confirmed their live TV picks for September, with one Newcastle game rescheduled:

Sat 13.09.2025 Wolves (h) 3pm no live UK TV
Sat 20.09.2025 Bournemouth (a) 3pm no live UK TV
Sun 28.09.2025 Arsenal (h) 4.30pm Sky

The Arsenal game falls between Newcastle's midweek Carabao Cup Third Round tie* and the second round of Champions League fixtures, spread across Tuesday September 30th and Wednesday October 1st.

With reference to the Bournemouth away game, just because it hasn't been selected for live TV, that doesn't confirm 100% that it will be a 3pm Saturday kick-off.

The first round of Champions League fixtures take place on the preceding Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: were Newcastle to be in action on the Thursday, that would result in the Bournemouth game moving to the Sunday.

While the Spurs v Wolves game picked for Sky on Sunday 28th is liable to change if Spurs are playing a Champions League tie on the 30th, there's no similar advice regarding our game v Arsenal on the same day - reason unknown.

The situation mirrors for our game regardless of that: were ourselves or Arsenal to be playing in the Champions League on the 30th then we would not meet in the PL on the 28th.

So in real terms, only the Wolves game is now confirmed, with the other three liable to possible change in the days following the Champions League draw on August 28th.

* that is split over two successive midweeks, with teams involved in the Champions League assured of playing their Carabao Cup tie during second of the two weeks.

There are no scheduled rail works between London Kings Cross on the day of the Arsenal game. For once.

The Bournemouth game looks unaffected by rail engineering work on the Saturday. Were it to be played on the Sunday, trains would still run direct to and from London but with average journey times extended by 45 minutes and trains not calling at either Basingstoke or Winchester.

On This Day in History
13th August

Born Or Died:

1970 Alan Shearer born, Gosforth.
(1996-2006 pl, 2009 Mgr)

May 2009 saw Alan Shearer standing on the touchline at St. James' Park in the depths of despair - a quarter of a century after being in the same spot, joining in the joyous celebrations of his teenage hero.

One day short of 25 years since he’d acted as a ball boy at Kevin Keegan’s testimonial, Shearer the manager watched his side lose 0-1 to Fulham - a defeat that left them staring into the Championship abyss.

In the intervening years between those twin milestones, Al the player had made his name elsewhere, becoming a world renowned goalscorer and shooting an unfashionable Northern club to Premiership title glory. Tragically though, that was with Blackburn Rovers, not his hometown side.

Lured back to Tyneside before the start of the 1996/97 season at a record-breaking cost of £15m, Shearer's first goal came from the penalty spot in a friendly at Lincoln City.

The first of his 206 goals then followed during his home debut; dispatching a fine free kick past Wimbledon 'keeper Neil Sullivan at the Leazes End to secure a 2-0 victory. The number 9 shirt had another Geordie idol.

Playing under ten managers at SJP in almost eleven years – six of them permanent - Alan failed to add to his silverware collection, with only the cold comfort of two FA Cup losers medals and Premier runners-up places.

Injuries were to be a recurring problem, with surgery required on a groin problem barely two months after his debut for United.

And what initially looked like no more than an awkward fall in a pre-season meeting with Chelsea in July 1997 sidelined Shearer for six months with ruptured ligaments and a broken bone in his ankle.

That setback meant that he missed United’s maiden Champions League campaign and although he scored within three minutes of his comeback (against Stevenage Borough in the FA Cup), the first of two consecutive Wembley disappointments lay ahead.

Ruud Gullit’s decision to drop Shearer to the bench for the Tyne-Wear derby seemed to spell the end for the number nine in August 1999. However that gambit spectacularly backfired when the visitors won 2-1 and it was the Dutchman who exited.

Given a new lease of life by the arrival of Sir Bobby Robson, Shearer then spectacularly marked the home debut of the new manager by smashing five goals in an 8-0 mauling of Sheffield Wednesday.

It's worth recording though that he and Robson didn't always see eye to eye, and Shearer was demoted to the bench for what proved to be Sir Bobby's final game in charge - away at Aston Villa. Local folklore also has it that Robson attempted to push through deals taking Shearer to Liverpool and Celtic.

Retiring from international football after Euro 2000 in order to prolong his club career, further injury problems however saw Shearer operated on in Colorado by knee specialist Richard Steadman in December 2000.

A comeback attempt was abandoned after two games, but the number nine was fit to make his comeback from the bench at an adoring SJP early the following season.

Plans to retire in 2005 were shelved and he played on for a further year, allowing him to eclipse Jackie Milburn’s club scoring record.

Equaling his total of 200 in a home FA Cup tie against Mansfield Town, he then claimed the record outright against Portsmouth – both efforts coming at the Gallowgate End where he’d stood as a teenage fan.

Ten games later though his career came to a slightly premature end through injury, in the closing stages of a 4-1 success on wearside.

Within ten minutes of smashing home a spot kick, Shearer sustained medial knee ligament damage in an accidental challenge with Julio Arca and was led from the field.

Speaking once the severity of his injury was known he said, “It's not a bad way to finish, coming to your local enemies and scoring a goal that's helped us get a 4-1 win."

Returning for a cameo appearance in his farewell testimonial against Celtic, Shearer kicked off before leaving the field, returning late on to score from the spot.

Becoming a BBC Match of the Day pundit, Alan was persuaded by Mike Ashley to make a return to SJP in April 2009 – the fourth different boss of a tragic campaign.

However, he and unpopular assistant Iain Dowie were only able to inspire a single victory from his allotted eight games in charge (against the smoggies), leaving following relegation to the Championship.

The expectation that he'd agree a new deal to lead United's promotion bid never materialised, Shearer claiming no contact from Ashley & Co. was ever forthcoming.

Despite being linked with various other clubs, Shearer's managerial career ended there and he returned to the BBC settee.

Reportedly offered the Cardiff City job during June 2011, he opted to remain on the MOTD sofa - even reuniting at one point with former nemesis, Ruud Gullit.

Maintaining a media presence via other channels including an ambassadorial role with the Premier League - and a regular column in the Sun that brought criticism from some.

Having expanded his punditry work to include interviews, 2017 saw Shearer present a BBC documentary, "Dementia, Football and me" - earning praise for a programme that examined the long-term effects of heading balls.

A Patron of the Bobby Robson Foundation, proceeds of Al's testimonial supported the Alan Shearer Centre in Newcastle for disabled people, with a Foundation later established in his name for the same cause.

1979 Death of Ed Dixon, 85.
(1914-23)

2005 Shaun Mavididi born, Romford.
(2021-24)

Midfielder who appeared on trial for United U18s in February 2021, after confirmation of his release from previous club, Arsenal.

Secured on youth terms that summer, the younger brother of ex-Gunner Stephy netted four times for the U18s in 19 games during the 2022/23 season, despite a hip fracture.

Shaun signed his first professional deal at SJP ahead of the 2023/24 season, making his U21 bow from the bench in a Premier League Cup tie against Huddersfield Town that November.

However that five minute cameo would be Mavididi's sole involvement at that level and he was released the following July.

Shaun joined Fleetwood Town and appeared for their U21 side.

What Else?

1927 Newcastle continued their pre-season preparations with a match between two Magpie XIs at Gallowgate.

7,600 fans saw a 2-0 win for the Stripes over the Whites, although the sides were mixed on this occasion rather than pitting probables against possibles.

The Stripes comprised the reserve attack and senior defence, with Bob Clark and Monty Wilkinson on target.

Stripes: Wilson, Little, Hudspeth, McKenzie, Spencer, Harris, Boyd, Clark, Wilkinson, T.Curry (1), Lang.

Whites: Davis, Maitland, Gillespie, Coulter, Park, T.Curry (2), Urwin, McKay, Gallacher, McDonald, Seymour.

Alan Shearer celebrated his 30th birthday with a goal in the sparsely populated Estadi Olimpic de Montjuic, but another pre-season loss made it just one pre-season win in five.

This game was to be the final one in which Duncan Ferguson was named - although he was a non-playing sub. The striker returned to Everton in a £4m deal within days.

United's second visit to the JNA Stadium in six years saw their new third-choice silver kit make a winning debut.

With Jonathan Woodgate and Shay Given posting fine defensive displays, birthday boy Alan Shearer went down in the box under pressure as he tried to reach Laurent Robert's cross. Amid penalty appeals, Nobby Solano kept his head to tuck the ball away.

Of course, no-one would be complacent for the second leg on Tyneside, but it certainly looked like job done....

Michael Owen, Kieron Dyer, Claudio Cacapa and Shola Ameobi all featured, the latter netting twice in a 2-0 success.

2008 The draw for the Carling Cup Second Round was made, handing Newcastle United an away tie at Coventry City - and the club's first-ever visit to their Ricoh Arena.

2008 Newcastle reserves were held to a goalless draw by non-league side Newcastle Blue Star at what would more aptly have been named Kingston Water Park.

The game was abandoned after 77 minutes due to the torrential rain, in what proved to be the last meeting between the two sides - with the Star going out of business at the end of that same season.

Two teenage trialist defenders appeared for United: Polish teenager Lukasz Kominiak from Wisla Krakow and Norwegian Aleksander Solli from Løv-Ham. Neither were retained.

2010 United's hopes of concluding a deal with Marseille for midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa looked to have received a boost, when the player was said to have travelled to Tyneside.
