Villa (a)

The Magpies begin their Premier League campaign at Villa Park
this coming Saturday. That's a 12.30pm kick-off, live on TNT
Sports and the away section is sold out.
Team: Joe Willock misses out through injury
while Alexander Isak is unavailable due to an attitude issue.
Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale and Malick Thiaw are all eligible to make
their PL debuts for the club. Regardless of whether the signing of Jacob
Ramsey is completed before the deadline, he won't be considered for
selection.
Youngsters Travis Hernes and Park Seung-soo trained with the senior squad
this week after featuring in pre-season.
Eddie Howe is set to return to the away dugout at Villa Park
after missing United's 1-4 loss there in April due to illness.

AVFC: Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is suspended following his red
card on the final day of last season. Marco Bizot goes between the posts for
his Premier League bow.
The 34 year-old Dutchman was with French side Brest last season, playing for
them at SJP back in August 2024 and conceding the only goal of the game to
Harvey Barnes.
Forward Evann Guessand is set for his PL debut
following a move from Nice, while Morgan Rogers may
be available after picking up an ankle injury during pre-season while Jacob
Ramsey misses out as he ties up his move to Newcastle.
Referee: Craig
Pawson - the South Yorkshire whistler gets our season-opener for a second
successive season, having presided over a 1-0 home win against Southampton.
Newcastle have been awarded penalties in the last three away games
that Pawson has handled and are unbeaten in each of the last seven
away games that he refereed:

Pitch prediction
We've partnered with Pitch
Publishing, a sports book publisher with an already extensive range of
NUFC related titles and several more due for release later in 2025.

Published on Monday, "The
Battle for Newcastle United" is journalist Andrew Nagy's first book
- an autobiographical account of a lifetime following Newcastle United.
He recounts his story via a 27 game selection, starting with the teenage
optimism of the 1992 home win over Bristol City that began Kevin Keegan's
second spell and ending with the Champions League humbling of PSG on
Tyneside in 2023.
Without giving the game(s) away, Andrew's choices are memorable - but not
always for positive reasons. A cast of heroes and villains appear; Ned Kelly
and Sir Les are in there alongside JFK, the FCB and the bloke who liked
bacon.
To be in with a chance of winning a copy, we simply require you to
predict the full time score in Newcastle's Premier League opener at Aston
Villa this coming Saturday.
Email [email protected]
with your answer by 10am BST on Saturday August 16th, subject line of Pitch.
No age limit, open to all but delivery only

will be randomly drawn from all correct entries received.

PS: Andrew Nagy is signing his books at Waterstones in
Newcastle from 1pm on Saturday week, August 23rd.
Update:
Ramsey in
Toon
Newcastle have agreed a £38m deal for the Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey,
who flew into Tyneside for his medical on Thursday afternoon.
Social media posts from fans on Friday afternoon then pictured him posing
with his family at pitchside, holding a Newcastle shirt with number 41 - his
Villa number.
24 year-old Ramsey was a team mate of Anthony Gordon at the European
U21 championships in 2023, although injury saw him miss England's Final
victory over Spain.
14 goals in 136 Premier League appearances since 2020 for Villa Academy
graduate Ramsey include an effort against Newcastle at Villa Park in 2023.
His sale has become increasingly inevitable in order to satisfy PSR
requirements.
PS: Thursday night brought renewed claims that the stalled deal bringing
Brentford's Yoane Wissa to Gallowgate was set to proceed in the
coming hours.
The Bees had been negotiating with Bournemouth to sign Dango Ouattara to
replace Wissa before allowing him to leave and now seem to have reached
agreement with the Cherries for a claimed £35m fee.

Update:
Toon called
Malick!
Newcastle's third senior arrival of the window was confirmed on Tuesday
evening, AC Milan defender Malick
Thiaw completing a permanent move for a claimed £35m fee.
(He has pronounced his surname "Chow" in interviews)
The German international flew into Tyneside from Italy on
Sunday, 48 hours after celebrating his 24th birthday. Completing his medical on Monday,
he's available for Saturday's Premier League season opener at Aston Villa.
Malick follows Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale to SJP, reuniting with former Rossoneri colleague Sandro
Tonali.
Thiaw had featured briefly against Leeds United in Dublin on Saturday before
returning to Milan while his colleagues faced Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on
Sunday.
Newcastle were credited with an interest in the 6 foot 4 inch-tall defender back
in June 2024, before their abortive pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc
Guehi.
The Dusseldorf native began his senior career with Bundesliga side Schalke
04 in 2020 (who have a claimed 10% sell-on clause), joining AC Milan two years later on a five year deal.
Facing Newcastle - and Tonali - in the San Siro in 2023, a hamstring injury
kept Malick out of the Champions League return meeting on Tyneside four
months later.
Thiaw will become the third German
international to appear for United in the Premier League after Dietmar Hamann
and Loris Karius. All three of his senior international caps came back in 2023.
Two further German-born players have also played for the club in that
competition: Alan Neilson (who represented Wales) and Joselu (capped by
Spain).
And as Thiaw arrives, another German-born player bids Auf Wiedershen to SJP;
Stuttgart-born goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimis heading out on loan to
Seville.
The Greek international made just one competitive senior appearance as a
Magpie, playing 45 minutes against AFC Wimbledon in the League Cup.
Update:
Isak:
stand-off continues
Following some conciliatory media comments on Monday to the effect that Alexander
Isak was set to remain at United beyond the current transfer window,
Tuesday saw those claims rowed back on by influential outlets.
Most notable was David Ornstein's restating of the player's stance via
social media: "Alexander Isak adamant he will not play for Newcastle
again. Even if window closes without exit 25yo views #NUFC career over + no
wish to reintegrate. Club say not for sale but exploring market amid
Liverpool interest & striker wants."
No second bid for the player from Liverpool has been received since their
initial offer of £110m was dismissed.
Attempts to stimulate interest from continental clubs meanwhile are yet to
harvest anything meaningful.
Update:
Pope on
pole
Newcastle have confirmed squad numbers for this season, with the only
major change seeing Nick Pope inherit the number 1 shirt from the
departed Martin Dubravka.
Lewis Hall is assigned the previously-vacant number 3 that he wore in
pre-season, while Malick Thiaw takes 12.
The other new arrivals had already sported their allocated numbers in
kickabouts.
The number 14 shirt remains in the possession of a certain Swede and for the
first time in the Premier League there's nobody wearing 9*

* thanks to those who correctly pointed out that the 2009/10 season saw the
9 shirt lie idle, following the hasty departure of Obafemi Martins after the
1-6 pre-season defeat at Leyton Orient.
Departure:
Oddy off the books
Tuesday brought confirmation that Newcastle goalkeeper Odysseas
Vlachodimos
has made a
season-long loan switch to Spanish side Seville.
It's reported that deal for the Greek international has no option for a
permanent switch and that the majority of his wages will continue to be paid
by the Magpies.
Avoiding relegation last season by one point means that there's no
European football for Seville this time round.
Vlachodimos was an unexpected arrival at SJP from Nottingham Forest 12
months ago as both clubs sought to comply with PSR requirements and made
just a single competitive appearance - in the Carabao Cup.

Youngster secured
Monday saw Newcastle confirm the signing of
England youth international captain Isaac Moran, after he refused an
offer to remain with Liverpool's academy.
The 16 year-old central defender/defensive midfielder will join up with
United's U18 squad as a first year scholar.
Moran's arrival comes after Oliver
Goodbrand and Alfie Hutchison were secured from Rangers during the close
season to augment Newcastle's academy ranks.
It's also claimed the Magpies have reached agreement to sign Muawiya Ghanem
from West Bromwich Albion - a 15 year-old midfielder.
United's U18s begin their league season on Saturday, hosting Blackburn
Rovers at Little Benton (12.30pm).

Meltdown:
Isak timeline
Sun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League
goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at
Brighton.
Sun 18.05 Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told
the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than
surgery was forecast.
Sun 25.05 Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to
Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.
Tue 27.05 Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to
a minor injury, presumably groin.
Mon 14.07 Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for
a week-long training camp.
Tue 15.07 The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they
were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.
Sat 19.07 Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the
media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more
training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming
tour of Asia.
Mon 21.07 Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park
but reportedly cut short the session.
(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)
Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane
Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.
Wed 23.07 Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo
Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace)
Isak.
Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media
outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move
away from the club".
The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an
extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per
week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial
status.
Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a
basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's
thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would
remain a Newcastle player.
Sun 27.07 Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there
was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.
Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.
Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak
and he remained a Magpie.
Wed 30.07 Spanish media claims Isak is training alone in San
Sebastian.
Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.
Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train
separately from the rest of the senior squad.
Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol,
Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No
disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.
2025/26:
TV times
The Premier League have confirmed their live TV
picks for September, with one Newcastle game rescheduled:
Sat 13.09.2025 Wolves (h) 3pm no live UK TV
Sat 20.09.2025 Bournemouth (a) 3pm no live UK TV
Sun 28.09.2025 Arsenal (h) 4.30pm Sky
The Arsenal game falls between Newcastle's midweek Carabao Cup Third
Round tie* and the second round of Champions League fixtures, spread across
Tuesday September 30th and Wednesday October 1st.
With reference to the Bournemouth away game, just because it hasn't been
selected for live TV, that doesn't confirm 100% that it will be a 3pm
Saturday kick-off.
The first round of Champions League fixtures take place on the preceding
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: were Newcastle to be in action on the
Thursday, that would result in the Bournemouth game moving to the
Sunday.
While the Spurs v Wolves game picked for Sky on Sunday 28th is liable to
change if Spurs are playing a Champions League tie on the 30th, there's no
similar advice regarding our game v Arsenal on the same day - reason
unknown.
The situation mirrors for our game regardless of that: were ourselves or
Arsenal to be playing in the Champions League on the 30th then we would not
meet in the PL on the 28th.
So in real terms, only the Wolves game is now confirmed, with the other
three liable to possible change in the days following the Champions League
draw on August 28th.
* that is split over two successive midweeks, with teams involved in the
Champions League assured of playing their Carabao Cup tie during second of
the two weeks.
There are no scheduled rail works between London Kings Cross on the day of
the Arsenal game. For once.
The Bournemouth game looks unaffected by rail engineering work on
the Saturday. Were it to be played on the Sunday, trains would still run direct
to and from London but with average journey times extended by 45 minutes and
trains not calling at either Basingstoke or Winchester.

Born Or Died:
1924 Ray King born, Amble.
(1942-46)

Goalkeeper who was one of three brothers from Radcliffe (near
Amble) to play league football; George for Hull City and Frank at Everton and
Derby County.
Playing for United in wartime football, Ray also guested for Chester City and
Wolves while serving in the Army.
Making his official senior debut in a unique two-legged FA Cup tie against
Barnsley in January 1946, Ray suffered a number of injuries and left Gallowgate
soon after for a brief stint at Leyton Orient.
Returning to his former club Amble as an outfield player, King then appeared in
goal for Ashington Reserves and was soon called into to the first team by
Colliers boss (and former Magpie) Jimmy Denmark.
King's brother George then pulled a few strings with his club Port Vale and Ray
moved down to the Potteries in 1949 for an eight year stint with the Valiants.
He won one England B cap, playing in a 2-0 win over Switzerland in Basel during
1954 alongside future United boss Bill McGarry.
Joining Boston United, Ray became involved in management, taking charge at both
Poole Town and Sittingbourne. He also spent time coaching at Luton Town.
Settling in Dorset, King worked both as a physiotherapist and a painter &
decorator and remained in football coaching Oxford before returning to Amble.
His autobiography "Hands, Feet and Balls" was published in
1998 and a second volume, "To the End of the Road" appeared in
2011.
Following the death of his wife in 2009, Ray relocated to Thailand and lived in
Bangkok with his son Gary. He passed away in July 2014, shortly before his 90th
birthday.
Recollecting his time at SJP, Ray spoke of a wartime game at Bradford that had
a pivotal effect on his time at Newcastle:
"Shack (future Magpie Len Shackleton) went off on a typical run in
the first half, weaving and swaying past five Newcastle players.
"As he was approaching my goal, I looked to narrow the angle but in taking
a couple of steps he made up his mind and chipped me.
"Though off balance, I desperately threw myself backwards. I managed to
flick the ball over the top but in doing so literally punched the crossbar. I
was in agony.
"It felt just like it did when I guested for Chester at
Everton over the Christmas holidays. I saved a penalty from Tommy Lawton but he
smashed the ball so hard that it broke the scaphoid in my right wrist.
"I'd been put in plaster and told I'd be like that for nine months - the
scaphoid is apparently the smallest bone in the body and the most difficult to
heal.
"The pain was as bad at Bradford but Newcastle's
trainer Norman Smith came on, threw some cold water on my wrist, and said:
`Come on son, you're getting soft!'
"I went to the hospital and the worst fears were
confirmed but United kept the news from me and I played 15 more games with a
broken wrist.
"I remember saving another penalty in an FA Cup tie against Barnsley at
SJP in the pouring rain - George Milburn, Jackie's cousin, took it - the pain
was excruciating.
"Of course my confidence started to go. The army doctor dismissed it as a
slight sprain but eventually I insisted on seeing a specialist at the RVI in
Newcastle and he advised me never to ever play football again because I had
brittle bones.
"That was the end of me at United. I was heartbroken. I didn't receive a
penny in compensation. I was just chucked on the scrap heap."

1948 Stuart Alderson born, Bishop Auckland, Durham. (1965-67)

Right-sided midfielder signed from Evenwood Town for the
princely sum of £50 at the start of the 1965/66 season.
Stuart's first team debut came in September 1966, when replacing Pop Robson at
number 7 for a 1-1 home draw against Burnley.
Keeping his place for a 0-3 loss away to Nottingham Forest the following week,
he then appeared in a home friendly against Linfield before making way for
Robson.
After one further outing - in a 2-0 home win over Manchester City the following
month - Alderson returned to the Central League side, leaving SJP the following
summer.
After a season with York City, he joined Ashington and later managed local
league side West Auckland.
Serving as General Manager at Darlington Road, Alderson found
himself dealing with the national media during 2009, as the 1909 World Cup
Winners travelled to Italy and faced Juventus in a centenary friendly.
He then found himself making preparations for a Wembley Stadium visit in 2012,
but West were beaten 2-0 by Northern League rivals Dunston in the FA Vase
Final.
Stuart mark half a century of involvement with West a year later, but a second
Wembley Vase visit in 2014 again saw his side defeated - this time by Sholing.

1976 Des Hamilton born, Bradford.
(1997-2001)

Right-sided midfielder signed from Bradford City (rejecting an
offer from the smoggies) in a £2m deal in March 1997, becoming Kenny
Dalglish's first major Magpie signing.
A first cap at U21 level for England followed within three months of his move
to SJP and appeared for United in first team games the following pre-season -
including leading out the side on his return to Valley Parade.
However, an ankle injury sustained against Juventus in Cesena less than a week
before the start of the season delayed his senior debut until October 1997.
Des duly marked his first appearance with the only first team goal of his
Newcastle career - shooting home at the Leazes End in a 2-0 League Cup win over
Hull City.
A league debut came later than month in a 1-1 home draw with Blackburn and in
his next outing - a 3-3 draw with Leicester City at SJP - Des thought he'd
scored, only for the goal to be credited to under-fire striker Jon Dahl
Tomasson by the club at HT.
True, the ball had brushed against the Dane, but his inability to get off the
scoring mark for us saw him gifted a goal that wasn't his.
All but one of Hamilton's 18 outings for United would come in that season under
Dalglish, with Des never getting a look in under Ruud Gullit - a memorable long
range effort in a SJP reserve game coming just weeks before the Dutchman took
charge.
Going out on loan to Sheffield United in October 1998, Hamilton spent the
second half of that season at Huddersfield Town.
Playing in pre-season games ahead of the 1999/00 season, Des twice found
himself being replaced when Gullit opted to bring himself on to boost a
faltering midfield.
What was to be his final appearance for United then in the final moments of a
2-0 away win against CSKA Sofia in September 1999, Sir Bobby's second game in
charge.
Injury problems then kept Hamilton out of the picture until a loan move to
Norwich City in March 2000 (along with fellow Magpie discard loanee, Garry
Brady).
With the 2000/01 season bringing neither a move to Carrow Road or a return to
the first team fold at SJP, Des joined Tranmere Rovers for an injury-hit spell
on loan.
A free agent in the summer of 2001, he signed for Cardiff City, remaining at
Ninian Park for two years, before moving on to Grimsby Town.
A brief excursion to Barnet in the tail end of the 2003/2004 season followed,
before Des retired from playing without making a first team appearance at
Underhill.
Thanks to eagle-eyed readers of NUFC.com, we then tracked him down back in his
native Bradford, playing for Campion in the West Riding
County Amateur Premier League (and also turning out in 5-a-sides for NBK).
By August 2017, Des had taken a coaching post at non-league Eccleshill United.
PS: Des retains legendary status among Bantams fans for his goal at
Wembley Stadium in the 1996 Division Two play-off victory over Notts County.
1982 Peter Wright born, Preston.
(1998-2001)

Striker who progressed to United's U19 side but lost out to the
likes of Michael Chopra, Richard Offiong and Shola Ameobi (when he moved
from defence to attack) and was released during the 2000/01 campaign.
Handed a trial by Halifax Town manager Paul Bracewell on the recommendation of
Peter Beardsley, Wright earned a one year but failed to score as the Shaymen
dropped out of the Football League in 2002 - earning headlines when dismissed
against Stoke City in the FA Cup.
Embarking on a tour of non-league sides in his native North West, Peter spent
time in the colours of Burscough, Southport, Northwich Victoria, Altrincham,
Bamber Bridge, Chorley, Fleetwood Town, Mossley, Kendal Town and Ribbleton
Rangers.
Following an assault on a 5-a-side football official, Wright was banned from
football sine die in December 2007 but later saw that reduced to two years on
appeal.
Working as a plumber, he racked up more clubs on his CV, including two stints
with Bamber Bridge, a second and third stay at Kendal and spells with Ashton
United, Leek Town, Nantwich Town and Nelson.
Knowing a bit about waterworks, Peter helped his partner deliver their
second child at home in 2013, before scoring the winner for Nelson just hours
later.

United's preparations for what would be a promotion
season saw them record a victory against the First
Division Clarets at Turf Moor.
There was little friendly about the encounter though, with
Dave Hilley and Burnley's Gordon Harris booked and several
other players spoken to.
The home side survived Newcastle hitting the woodwork on
no less than four occasions before Jim Iley converted
Trevor Hockey's centre for the only goal of the game.
The two sides had played out a 1-1 draw on Tyneside the
previous week - that pair of games the entirety of Joe
Harvey's pre-season programme.

Premier League debut.
Richard Rufus was dismissed for Charlton after 25 minutes
by referee Dermot Gallacher for an elbow on Nicos Dabizas
as Gary Speed prepared to take a corner - no penalty being
awarded as the ball wasn't "live".
Despite that though, an inept display by a
Magpies side including debutants Dietmar Hamann and Laurent Charvet left home fans chanting "what a load of
rubbish". Barely a week later, Daglish was gone.
Ex-Magpie Andy Hunt made his Charlton bow, while John
Barnes played what was to be his final United final game -
brought on at half time but subbed himself on 68
minutes.
His next Premier League game would come for Charlton, following a free transfer move to the Valley in
February 1999.

Following defeats by Aston Villa and Spurs, a third

bizarre interview to Sky, during which he appeared to
predict his SJP exit.
That came after a humiliating loss at the Dell and an
unsteady debut for goalkeeper John Karelse after his
transfer from NAC Breda.
Despite losing Carl Serrant early on to the injury that
ultimately cost him his playing career, United reached
half time 1-0 ahead.

another "f" word came to mind as an abject
