Update:
Midfielder unveiled

Newcastle confirmed the transfer of Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon for an undisclosed fee claimed to be around £38m.

The 24 year-old midfielder flew into Tyneside on Thursday afternoon ahead of his medical, social media posts from supporters
on Friday picturing him at pitchside, holding a Newcastle shirt with number 41 - his Villa number.

Ramsey was a team mate of Anthony Gordon at the European U21 championships in 2023, although injury saw him miss England's Final victory over Spain.

14 goals in 136 Premier League appearances since 2020 for the Villa Academy graduate included an effort against Newcastle at Villa Park in 2023.

PS: A deal for Brentford's Yoane Wissa is drawing closer, after the Bees completed the club record £42m acquisition of Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth on Saturday.

That is expected to allow the DR Congo international forward to complete his desired move to the Magpies in the coming days. Wissa wasn't involved on Sunday as Brentford lost 1-3 at Nottingham Forest in their season-opener.

U21s:
Saints succeed

Newcastle U21s  1  Southampton U21s  2

A strong Newcastle U21 side made a losing start to their PL2 fixture programme on Sunday, losing to Southampton at a sun-drenched Whitley Park.

The visitors took the lead when a 15th minute corner was touched in at the near post by Baylee Dipepa but retained that advantage for just two minutes, before Sean Neave volleyed home Alfie Harrison's right wing cross.

Southampton regained the lead with what proved to be the winning goal in the 56th minute, Romeo Akachukwu guiding a strike high into the net beyond Max Thompson.

The 19 year-old Irish youth international who spent time on trial at United in 2023 scored on his U21 debut in midweek and marked his first PL2 start here with a stylish finish.

Neave netted from close range in the 85th minute but was denied by the linesman's flag before the Saints survived nine minutes of added time to leave with maximum points.

Lewis Hall completed the full 90 minutes as he continues his comeback from injury, while there was a competitive bow for Korean teenager Park Seung-soo.

Team: M.Thompson, Ashby, Hall, A.Murphy, Heffernan, Munda, Sanusi, Hernes, Neave, Al.Harrison (Bailey 78), Park (Fitzgerald 70).
Subs n/u: Ad.Harrison, McArthur, Brayson.

Premier League:
Everything but the goal

Aston Villa  0  Newcastle  0

Newcastle's season got off to a frustrating start at Villa Park on Saturday lunchtime, leaving Villa Park with only one point against an Aston Villa side who played the final quarter of the game a man short.

Ezri Konsa saw red midway through the second half for pulling down stand-in striker Anthony Gordon who was clear through on goal but the Magpies failed to capitalise on the extra man and never looked like taking all three points.

United should have been in front in just the third minute when debutant Anthony Elanga had just the 'keeper to beat
and Gordon on hand for a tap-in but shot at Marco Bizot. Hopefully not his Jon Dahl Tomasson moment....

Elanga caused the home side some problems in a positive opening 45 minutes for the visitors and better crosses from both flanks should have seen United ahead at the break.

But both sides looked off the pace with the hosts in particular failing to trouble Nick Pope, who easily saved one or two direct efforts at him. A familiar-looking back four in front of him meanwhile was spearheaded by Dan Burn, who made a series of well-timed interventions to snuff out the Villans.

At the other end some decent build-up play rarely ended with efforts on target; Gordon's low shot comfortably stopped after he assumed a more familiar left wing role and
Harvey Barnes working an opening from similar range to many of his Toon goals but blasting the ball into the crowd.

Set pieces were also disappointing with bungled free-kick routines and corners causing few problems for debutant Bizot who looked shaky but remained mostly untested.

A point that most would have taken before kick-off ended up as a slightly disappointing return given the red card, although Villa are now unbeaten in their last 19 PL fixtures on home territory since August 2024.

Sadly, our inability to profit from the situation presented to us meant that the most-profile player today was the one who remained absent due to his own misguided motives.

Full match report to follow.

Team: Pope, Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento, Elanga (J. Murphy 78), Joelinton (L. Miley 83), Guimaraes, Tonali, Barnes (Osula), Gordon.
Subs n/u: Ramsdale, Thiaw, Botman, Hall, Krafth, Park.

Booked: Joelinton.

AVFC: Bizot, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne, Kamara, Onana, McGinn (Malen 84), Tielemens, Rogers, Watkins.
Subs n/u: Wright, Torres, Bogarde, Maatsun, Jimoh-Alobah, Iling Jr, Guessand, Buendia.

Sent off: Konsa 66 - professional foul.

Booked: Kamara.

Crowd: 42,526 - including a fully sold out away section.

For a change at Villa Park the atmosphere was unnervingly benign. Chants of "Premier League, corrupt as f**k" and "F**k PSR" were taken up by both sets of fans.

After the final whistle "One greedy b*stard" was directed towards the absent Alexander Isak as stand-in centre forward Anthony Gordon was interviewed.

Pre-match tributes consisted of a minute's applause for local hero Ozzy Osbourne and a minute's silence for the deceased footballer Diogo Jota and his brother.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

"I can't be negative today - the players stood up. I think they were really good mentally today.

"I'm happy with the point. I thought we were magnificent, front-foot, very aggressive. We had chances to score.

"I think we had a bit of a lull in the game until the red card and then came on strong again. I'm disappointed we didn't win. I don't think we dominated, chance-wise, the way we wanted. We were maybe a little bit too anxious to score but the players really turned up and gave everything."

On Alexander Isak:

"We do (have to forget about him) he's not here with us.

"We have to focus on who is here and get the best out of them. The players are aware he's not here, the focus will be on each player playing to the best of their ability.

"I want him to play. I want him to train. I've had those conversations
(with him) but the details of those will remain private

"There is no change to the situation. All my focus has been on the training, Aston Villa and the transfer front in terms of getting players in - that is all-consuming for me.

"Alex's situation has been unchanged for a while and that will continue to be the case.

"Me and Alex have enjoyed a great relationship. I don't think he would have done as well has he has done without that. Without his team-mates, without the supporters.

"He is a highly intelligent person and he knows he wouldn't have had the success he's had without everybody connected with Newcastle.

"We'd like a resolution, we need that clarity. I'm not in control of it, only one person is. I've made my stance pretty clear.

On the fans - and post-match "greedy bastard" chants:

"Our supporters acted really well today because they supported the team when we were playing. They've always done that unbelievably well. We have had some tricky moments.

"I think afterwards, if they want to say something they are free to do that."

Referee:
Craig Pawson - the South Yorkshire whistler got our season-opener for a second successive season, having presided over a 1-0 home win against Southampton.

Newcastle are now unbeaten in every one of the last eight away games that Pawson has refereed:

Stats:

Anthony Elanga
made his competitive debut for United, the 270th player to have done so in the Premier League and the fourth Swedish-born player after Andreas Andersson, Emil Krafth and that other bloke.

Fellow new boys Malick Thiaw, Aaron Ramsdale and Park Seung-soo were all unused substitutes.

Dan Burn made his 150th competitive appearance in all competitions for Newcastle (125th in the PL).

Newcastle failed to take maximum points from their opening PL fixture for the first time in four seasons, after a 2-0 home victory over Nottingham Forest in 2022, a 5-1 success against Villa at Gallowgate in 2023 and a 1-0 win against Southampton on Tyneside last year.

It's now three PL games since the Magpies last scored, when Bruno Guimaraes shot home against Chelsea at SJP in the final seconds of normal time.
That was followed by 0-1 losses at Arsenal, at home to Everton and today's scoreless draw at Villa.

The last time United registered a trio of consecutive PL blanks was in January 2021.

270 barren minutes isn't the worst spell under Eddie Howe - a two game run in early 2023 bookended early and late goals, meaning the goal drought stretched to 337 minutes.

Newcastle failed to find the net on the opening day of the PL season for the first time since 2019, when they lost 0-1 at home to Arsenal.

This was the third season-opening goalless draw in the Premier League era for United, after 0-0 stalemates on Tyneside in 1998 and 2011.

The Magpies debuted their green change kit in the PL.

Pitch prediction

We've partnered with Pitch Publishing, a sports book publisher with an already extensive range of NUFC related titles and several more due for release later in 2025.

Now available "The Battle for Newcastle United" is journalist Andrew Nagy's first book - an autobiographical account of a lifetime following Newcastle United.

He recounts his story via a 27 game selection, starting with the teenage optimism of the 1992 home win over Bristol City that began Kevin Keegan's second spell and ending with the Champions League humbling of PSG on Tyneside in 2023.

Without giving the game(s) away, Andrew's choices are memorable - but not always for positive reasons. A cast of heroes and villains appear; Ned Kelly and Sir Les are in there alongside JFK, the FCB and the bloke who liked bacon.

To be in with a chance of winning a copy, we asked you to predict the full time score in Newcastle's Premier League opener at Aston Villa - and six of you did just that.

That required a random draw, which saw Graham Bland and Jonathan Renney crowned as our champions.

Check out the Pitch catalogue here and find offers on current and future NUFC titles on Amazon here

PS: Andrew Nagy is signing his books at Waterstones in Newcastle from 1pm this coming Saturday, August 23rd.

Liverpool (h)

Newcastle kick off their home Premier League campaign by receiving the reigning champions for an 8pm kick-off on Monday week, August 25th.

It's an 8pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports.

Following the Carabao Cup Final success in March, United are seeking back to back wins against the Reds for the first time since November 1995, when a 2-1 PL home victory was swiftly followed by 1-0 League Cup away win.

However the Magpies haven't beaten Liverpool in the PL since December 2015, when they prevailed 2-0 at SJP.

Since then, the 17 league meetings have resulted in five draws and 12 losses.

Isak timeline

Sun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Sun 18.05
Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than surgery was forecast.

Sun 25.05
Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.

Tue 27.05
Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to a minor injury, presumably groin.

Mon 14.07
Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for a week-long training camp.

Tue 15.07
The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.

Sat 19.07
Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming tour of Asia.

Mon 21.07
Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park but reportedly cut short the session.

(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)

Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.

Wed 23.07
Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace) Isak.

Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club".

The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial status.

Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would remain a Newcastle player.

Sun 27.07
Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.

Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.

Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak and he remained a Magpie.

Wed 30.07 Spanish media claims Isak is training alone in San Sebastian.

Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.

Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train separately from the rest of the senior squad.

Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol, Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.

Sat 16.08 Isak wasn't involved in the Premier League season opener at Aston Villa.

2025/26:
TV times

The Premier League have confirmed their live TV picks for September, with one Newcastle game rescheduled:

Sat 13.09.2025 Wolves (h) 3pm no live UK TV
Sat 20.09.2025 Bournemouth (a) 3pm no live UK TV
Sun 28.09.2025 Arsenal (h) 4.30pm Sky

The Arsenal game falls between Newcastle's midweek Carabao Cup Third Round tie* and the second round of Champions League fixtures, spread across Tuesday September 30th and Wednesday October 1st.

With reference to the Bournemouth away game, just because it hasn't been selected for live TV, that doesn't confirm 100% that it will be a 3pm Saturday kick-off.

The first round of Champions League fixtures take place on the preceding Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: were Newcastle to be in action on the Thursday, that would result in the Bournemouth game moving to the Sunday.

While the Spurs v Wolves game picked for Sky on Sunday 28th is liable to change if Spurs are playing a Champions League tie on the 30th, there's no similar advice regarding our game v Arsenal on the same day - reason unknown.

The situation mirrors for our game regardless of that: were ourselves or Arsenal to be playing in the Champions League on the 30th then we would not meet in the PL on the 28th.

So in real terms, only the Wolves game is now confirmed, with the other three liable to possible change in the days following the Champions League draw on August 28th.

* that is split over two successive midweeks, with teams involved in the Champions League assured of playing their Carabao Cup tie during second of the two weeks.

There are no scheduled rail works between London Kings Cross on the day of the Arsenal game. For once.

The Bournemouth game looks unaffected by rail engineering work on the Saturday. Were it to be played on the Sunday, trains would still run direct to and from London but with average journey times extended by 45 minutes and trains not calling at either Basingstoke or Winchester.

Balderstone(51)

Newcastle fans had their first sight of new signing Colin Taylor following his arrival from Walsall - and he lived up to his Cannonball nickname with a well-struck treble.

Does anyone have a copy of the match programme/teamsheet for this game that they can scan or sell us please?

1968 Burnley (a)

P3, 2pts, 18th/22

After 1-1 draws at home to West Ham and at Sheffield Wednesday, an own goal from John McNamee saw United leave Turf Moor empty-handed.

Our reserve side meanwhile beat their Burnley counterparts 2-1 at SJP, thanks to goals from Eric Ross and Keith Dyson.

And the N's junior side also picked up two points, winning 2-0 at Bradford Park Avenue with Longstaff and Artie Lumdson on target.

1974 Coventry City (h)

Having ended the previous season with a winless eight game run that included the FA Cup Final defeat by Liverpool, United made a winning start to the new campaign.

There were league debuts for both Mickey Burns and Glenn Keeley, Manager Joe Harvey commenting that, "there is so much talent in this club we have to do something." It was to be his final season in charge.

1983 AEK Athens (Greece) (a)

Defensive pair Jeff Clarke and John Anderson both saw goals chalked off against an AEK side managed by Tynesider John Barnwell and featuring Chelsea old boy Tommy Langley and former Gunner/Toffee Trevor Ross.

Team: Carr, Anderson, Ryan, McCreery, Clarke, Carney, Keegan, McDonald (Wharton 60), Varadi, McDermott (Trewick 60), Waddle.
Subs n/u: Thomas, Hedworth, Haddock.

1990 Dunfermline Athletic (Scotland) (a) 0-0 (0-0)
Friendly

The Magpies motored to the Kingdom of Fife to appear in a testimonial for Norrie McCathy at East End Park.

Thanks to our well-informed readership, we can tell you that Norrie was the Pars' longest serving player and captained the team through the late '80s &  early '90s.

Team: Wright, Ranson (Bradshaw), Sweeney, Aitken, Kristensen, Scott, Simpson (Clarke), O'Brien, Quinn (Robinson), McGhee, Askew.

Famously (in Dunfermline) when the Pars topped the SPL in 1989, it was the front page headline on the Daily Record. Their second story was that the Berlin Wall had come down the same day...

(thanks to Ian "Fifer" Ferguson)

1996 Everton (a)
0-2
(0-2)
Premier League
P1, 0pts, 17th/18
Unsworth(29pen), Speed(40)
40,117
League debut for Alan Shearer, who scored with a header, unfortunately and inexplicably disallowed.

At the other end Everton were awarded a ludicrous penalty when Duncan Ferguson pulled Steve Watson to the ground before dramatically falling over him. David Unsworth netted it while Gary Speed got the other.

2000 The saga of Duncan Ferguson's return to Goodison finally came to an end. United refused to compensate the Scot for unpaid bonuses and Bobby berated Ferguson's agent after the deal was done, following a week of on-off-on-off headlines.

2003 Leeds United (a)

(1-1)
Premiership
P1, 1pt, 11th/20
Shearer(20pen,88)
Viduka(24), Smith(57)

Gary Speed and Olivier Bernard had Alan Shearer to thank for digging them out of their respective holes, his brace salvaging a point after his colleagues' blunders let in future Magpies Mark Viduka and Alan Smith.

Lee Bowyer debuted for Newcastle on his return to Elland Road, while David Batty appeared from the bench for the home side and was applauded by both sets of fans.
NUFC.com match report

2005 In the wake of the furore following our Highbury season opener, the FA opted to reschedule their appointments in order to avoid sending buffoon Barry Knight to SJP.

Instead, Dermot Gallacher was selected to officiate Newcastle's home game against West Ham - controversially dismissing Paul Konchesky for what looked like a decent challenge on Jermaine Jenas, whom Steve Bennett had sent off at Arsenal.

2008 Manchester United (a) 1-1 (1-1)
Premier League
P1, 1pt, 11th/20
Martins(22)
Fletcher(24)

The Manc muppets aired their "Cheer up Kevin Keegan" nonsense but needn't have bothered as KK beamed his way out of Old Trafford with a deserved point.

But perhaps it could have been all three....

With the home side already missing some big names, they lost Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs in the second half and our best chance in decades to beat the Red Devils on their own patch suddenly presented itself.

Jonas Gutierrez had an outstanding debut, Fabricio Coloccini steadied the defence and with Danny Guthrie industrious in midfield, our lads steadily grew in confidence.

Obafemi Martins headed the visitors ahead from Guthrie's corner at the Stretford End, but within two minutes the Red Devils were level, Newcastle temporarily a man short as Steven Taylor received treatment.

Despite the optimism of this result, it was ill-fortune of that nature - plus countless incidents of self-harm - that contributed to our demotion the following May.

2013 The U21s made a winning start to their home campaign, beating Wolves 3-1 at SJP. Macaulay Gillesphey, Adam Armstrong and Dan Gosling all netted.

What was to be the final season of Alan Pardew's time at SJP began with a decent display against the Premier League Champions but a seventeenth successive failure to beat the Citizens.

Six players debuted for United; Remy Cabella, Jack Colback, Daryl Janmaat and Emmanuel Riviere in started and Rolando Aarons and Ayoze Perez came off the bench

It proved to be third time lucky for United, following defeats by Fulham and Huddersfield Town.

Rafa Benitez saw three of his summer signings find the net, Isaac Hayden, Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle's brace helping United to their first Championship victory since 2010.

2019 Norwich City (a)

Premier League
P2, 0pts, 17th/20
Shelvey(90+3)
Pukki(32,63,75)

United made it two defeats out of two with a poor showing at Carrow Road as Teemu Pukki helped himself to his first City hat-trick.

Jonjo Shelvey hit a late consolation for United but it was way too little and way too late for Steve Bruce's side who were soundly beaten by the manager's former club.

There was a debut for Swedish defender Emil Krafth, at right back.

A smart strike from Joelinton in first half added time gave Newcastle a winning start to the season - despite having to play with ten men for over an hour.

A clash between Fabian Schar and Ben Brereton-Diaz that began when the visiting striker shoved the defender ended with the pair locking horns before the Saint fell to the floor clutching his face.

Referee Craig Pawson issued Schar with a red card that a VAR check upheld; the Saint escaping with a booking
