Midfielder unveiled

Newcastle confirmed the transfer of Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon for an undisclosed fee claimed to be around £38m.

The 24 year-old midfielder flew into Tyneside on Thursday afternoon ahead of his medical, social media posts from supporters
on Friday picturing him at pitchside, holding a Newcastle shirt with number 41 - his Villa number.

Ramsey was a team mate of Anthony Gordon at the European U21 championships in 2023, although injury saw him miss England's Final victory over Spain.

14 goals in 136 Premier League appearances since 2020 for the Villa Academy graduate included an effort against Newcastle at Villa Park in 2023.

Pitch prediction

We've partnered with Pitch Publishing, a sports book publisher with an already extensive range of NUFC related titles and several more due for release later in 2025.

Now available "The Battle for Newcastle United" is journalist Andrew Nagy's first book - an autobiographical account of a lifetime following Newcastle United.

He recounts his story via a 27 game selection, starting with the teenage optimism of the 1992 home win over Bristol City that began Kevin Keegan's second spell and ending with the Champions League humbling of PSG on Tyneside in 2023.

Without giving the game(s) away, Andrew's choices are memorable - but not always for positive reasons. A cast of heroes and villains appear; Ned Kelly and Sir Les are in there alongside JFK, the FCB and the bloke who liked bacon.

To be in with a chance of winning a copy, we asked you to predict the full time score in Newcastle's Premier League opener at Aston Villa - and six of you did just that.

That required a random draw, which saw Graham Bland and Jonathan Renney crowned as our champions.

Check out the Pitch catalogue here and find offers on current and future NUFC titles on Amazon here

PS: Andrew Nagy is signing his books at Waterstones in Newcastle from 1pm this coming Saturday, August 23rd.

Update:
Wissa: fresh doubts

Far from drawing closer as had been predicted, Monday brought reports that Newcastle's pursuit of Brentford's Yoane Wissa remained deadlocked.

The Bees have completed a club record £42m acquisition of Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth but remain unwilling to conclude a deal with the Magpies at an acceptable price.

Wissa wasn't involved on Sunday as Brentford lost 1-3 at Nottingham Forest in their season-opener. The DR Congo international turns 29 next month and is expected to spend part of January on African Nations Cup Final duty.

The goalkeeper wasn't involved on Sunday as his new side lost 2-3 away to Athletic Bilbao in the Primera Liga.

Liverpool (h)

Newcastle kick off their home Premier League campaign by receiving the reigning champions for an 8pm kick-off on Monday August 25th.

It's an 8pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports.

Following the Carabao Cup Final success in March, United are seeking back to back wins against the Reds for the first time since November 1995, when a 2-1 PL home victory was swiftly followed by 1-0 League Cup away win.

However the Magpies haven't beaten Liverpool in the PL since December 2015, when they prevailed 2-0 at SJP.

Since then, the 17 league meetings have resulted in five draws and 12 losses.

Isak timeline

Sun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Sun 18.05
Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than surgery was forecast.

Sun 25.05
Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.

Tue 27.05
Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to a minor injury, presumably groin.

Mon 14.07
Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for a week-long training camp.

Tue 15.07
The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.

Sat 19.07
Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming tour of Asia.

Mon 21.07
Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park but reportedly cut short the session.

(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)

Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.

Wed 23.07
Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace) Isak.

Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club".

The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial status.

Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would remain a Newcastle player.

Sun 27.07
Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.

Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.

Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak and he remained a Magpie.

Wed 30.07 Spanish media claims Isak is training alone in San Sebastian.

Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.

Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train separately from the rest of the senior squad.

Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol, Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.

Sat 16.08 Isak wasn't involved in the Premier League season opener at Aston Villa.

2025/26:
TV times

The Premier League have confirmed their live TV picks for September, with one Newcastle game rescheduled:

Sat 13.09.2025 Wolves (h) 3pm no live UK TV
Sat 20.09.2025 Bournemouth (a) 3pm no live UK TV
Sun 28.09.2025 Arsenal (h) 4.30pm Sky

The Arsenal game falls between Newcastle's midweek Carabao Cup Third Round tie* and the second round of Champions League fixtures, spread across Tuesday September 30th and Wednesday October 1st.

With reference to the Bournemouth away game, just because it hasn't been selected for live TV, that doesn't confirm 100% that it will be a 3pm Saturday kick-off.

The first round of Champions League fixtures take place on the preceding Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: were Newcastle to be in action on the Thursday, that would result in the Bournemouth game moving to the Sunday.

While the Spurs v Wolves game picked for Sky on Sunday 28th is liable to change if Spurs are playing a Champions League tie on the 30th, there's no similar advice regarding our game v Arsenal on the same day - reason unknown.

The situation mirrors for our game regardless of that: were ourselves or Arsenal to be playing in the Champions League on the 30th then we would not meet in the PL on the 28th.

So in real terms, only the Wolves game is now confirmed, with the other three liable to possible change in the days following the Champions League draw on August 28th.

* that is split over two successive midweeks, with teams involved in the Champions League assured of playing their Carabao Cup tie during second of the two weeks.

There are no scheduled rail works between London Kings Cross on the day of the Arsenal game. For once.

The Bournemouth game looks unaffected by rail engineering work on the Saturday. Were it to be played on the Sunday, trains would still run direct to and from London but with average journey times extended by 45 minutes and trains not calling at either Basingstoke or Winchester.

On This Day in History
18th August

Born Or Died:

1880 Finlay Speedie born, Dumbarton, Scotland. (1906-08)

Inside forward who joined Glasgow Rangers in October 1900 and won two league titles and an FA Cup during six years at Ibrox.

Arriving at Gallowgate in September 1906 at a cost of £600, Speedie marked his debut by netting twice in a 5-1 home victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

His first season as a Magpie saw him pick up a Championship medal but a fourth place finish the following year coupled with defeat in the FA Cup Final saw a squad reshuffle - Finlay's last game for the club that 1-3 defeat to Wolves at the Crystal Palace.

Moving on to Oldham Athletic ahead of the 1908/09 season along with Bill Appleyard, a return to his native Scotland came a year later via a brief stint at Bradford PA.

Appearing for Dumbarton (whom he'd played for back in 1895), Finlay served with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in World War 1 and was awarded the Military Medal.

He returned to Dumbarton as trainer and resided in his home town until passing away in February 1953.

1917 Death of James Fleming.
(1911-13) Killed in Belgium during WW1.

1935 James Harrower born, Alva, Scotland. (1961-62)

Inside forward who was spotted playing for Bo'ness United by Hibernian and moved to Easter Road in 1954.

Joining Liverpool four years later for a fee of £11,000, Jimmy was sold by Bill Shankly to Newcastle in March 1961 for a £4,000 profit after failing to displace Jimmy Melia from the regular Anfield starting XI.

Debuting in a 2-1 victory at Spurs later that month, Harrower was to play just six games for the Magpies - the last of which was an FA Cup exit in January 1962 at the hands of Peterborough United.

Returning to Scotland with Falkirk, Jimmy later served St.Johnstone, Albion Rovers and Alloa Athletic. He passed away in August 2006, a victim of cancer.

Newcastle's second string meanwhile went down 2-5 at West Bromwich Albion, Reg Davies netting both goals for the Magpies.

United's recent signing George Eastham made his reserve debut and "showed some pleasing touches" according to contemporary reports.

A goal up at the break through Pop Robson, he then added another three in the second half, while Keith Webster hit a brace and Ron Guthrie - then a forward - also netted.

There was a rare first team opportunity for reserve full back John Carver, while United boss Jack Charlton admitted playing his part in Boro's defensive improvement.

That came about in a telephone call with their manager Willie Maddren, after Jack saw Boro struggle to deploy their offside trap during a kickabout against the mackems.

Following games in the Isle of Man, Ireland, Carlisle and Durham, United completed their pre-season preparations with the visit of a Mexican side to Gallowgate (plans to host Benfica failed to come to fruition.

Played on the Monday night before the first league game of the season, a small crowd saw Peter Beardsley and Paul Gascoigne return to action following injuries.

The visitors began the second half with just ten men after one of the players took his time returning from the dressing room, local referee John Watson in no mood to wait.

Team: Thomas, Anderson, Bailey, McCreery (Gascoigne 70), Clarke, Roeder, McDonald, Allon (Beardsley 80), Whitehurst, Davies, Wharton.

Newcastle began their season with a Sunday lunchtime kick-off at the Addicks' temporary home of Upton Park.

A poor start though saw Franz Carr score a late consolation on his debut. Charlton took the lead through a young Robert Lee when Pavel Srnicek spilled a free kick.

Despite the low crowd, poor organisation meant that many Toon fans missed the kick off due to a lack of open turnstiles.

Newcastle's first Premiership goal was a Liam O'Brien free kick that Peter Atherton diverted past City goalkeeper, Jonathan Gould.

Atherton was originally credited with the own goal, but some years later a PL review gave it to O'Brien.

At the other end, Pavel Srnicek was dismissed for a foul, Kevin Keegan sacrificing Nicky Papavasilou in favour of replacement goalkeeper Tommy Wright.

Former Magpie Mick Quinn took the resultant penalty - only to blast it way over the bar and into the building site that had been the away end at Highfield Road.

However, another former Magpie striker came off the bench for City and Mick Harford headed a late winner with his first touch.

The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for the recently-departed David Kelly, who sat in the away section to great applause.

He was serenaded with a rousing rendition of "scored a hat-trick on the telly" (which he had done in his last game for United - the 7-1 demolition of Leicester City at SJP).

2004 Three years after playing their first game at Gallowgate since 1938, England returned to Tyneside for a friendly match against Ukraine.

A routine 3-0 win for
Sven-Goran Eriksson's side saw David Beckham, Michael Owen and Shaun Wright-Phillips all net.

Kieron Dyer was booed onto the pitch at half-time after he had refused to play on the right flank for United's season opener at Middlesbrough days earlier. Fans and bairns joined in the pantomime booing and the press lapped it up.

Magpie midfielder Jermaine Jenas replaced Frank Lampard 16 minutes from time, while Nicky Butt was in the England starting XI, having made his Newcastle debut at the smoggies four days earlier.

35,387 fans attended but the FA made a mess of ticket sales,
high-priced seats selling poorly and causing the FA to alter their policy and flog them at SJP and on the turnstiles.

This was a massive kick in the teeth for fans who had already purchased them via Ticket Master, paying extortionate online and phone booking fees for doing so.

An instantly forgettable live lunchtime stalemate saw midfielder Isaac Hayden red-carded for a bad tackle just 21 minutes after arriving as a substitute.

United had a chance to victory in added time after a handball in the City box. With penalty taker Matt Ritchie substituted, Kenedy was entrusted with the vital kick - only to send an awful effort into the arms of Bluebirds 'keeper Neil Etheridge.
