Isak: NUFC respond

The publication of a statement by Alexander Isak on Tuesday prompted the following response from NUFC:

"We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening. We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.

"We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met.

"This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates."

Isak breaks silence

Statement from Alexander Isak on instagram, following his failure to attend Tuesday's PFA awards ceremony in Manchester:

"I'm proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25.

"First and foremost I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way.

"I'm not at the ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn't feel right to be there.

"I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.

"The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.

"When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”

Alexander Isak

Our musings:

It's nice of the player to pipe up after his summertime disappearing act, having allowed others to do his work during the last month or so.

Whatever faint hopes of a temporary reconciliation would certainly now appear to be over - there's no patching this one up. That of course is the intention - arriving at the same point as submitting a transfer request, but without the financial jeopardy of doing that. Perish the thought.

What those promises were, who made them and when they were made will now prompt a further avalanche of media coverage to obscure the inconvenient fact that nothing was written down and there is no release clause.

If we're talking about statements, one in the form of an acceptable bid from a certain club would be a start - but doubtless they'll be keeping well clear until the dust settles after this latest development.

Rafa Benitez is fond of saying that "football is a lie", but the pursuit of truth in this unsavoury situation is becoming less important than solving the conundrum of replacing Isak.

PS: On July 24th, when Isak told Newcastle he wanted to "explore a move away from the club" we wrote that:

The message is clear: a concerted campaign from the North West involving briefings to sympathetic media outlets has succeeded in unsettling the player and encouraged his representatives.

This latest development will doubtless prompt a backlash against Isak from disgruntled Newcastle fans, which will then be advanced as a reason for his inevitable exit.

The circus moves on to Gallowgate next Monday, with Sky on hand to record every chant and shout. And so it goes.

Premier League:
Liverpool (h)

Newcastle kick off their home Premier League campaign by receiving the reigning champions for an 8pm kick-off on Monday.

It's an 8pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports and sold out.

Following the Carabao Cup Final success in March, United are seeking back to back wins against the Reds for the first time since November 1995, when a 2-1 PL home victory was swiftly followed by 1-0 League Cup away win.

However the Magpies haven't beaten Liverpool in the PL since December 2015, when they prevailed 2-0 at SJP.

Since then, the 17 league meetings have resulted in five draws and 12 losses.

Team: Joe Willock remains out but Saturday's draw away to Aston Villa brought no new injuries to light.

Recent recruits Malick Thiaw, Aaron Ramsdale and Park Seung-soo were on the bench at Villa Park, with Jacob Ramsey's move to Tyneside confirmed since then.

LFC:
To follow

The Reds began their title defence with a 4-2 home victory over Bournemouth on Friday night.

Referee: Simon Hooper - the Wiltshire whistler began his PL season by taking charge of Arsenal's 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Hooper's most recent appointment to a Newcastle game was our 0-1 reverse at Arsenal back in May. His last sighting at SJP was the 2-0 Carabao Cup second leg success against the Gunners: this will be his first PL appearance at Gallowgate since the 4-1 home win over Chelsea in November 2023.

Midfielder unveiled

Newcastle confirmed the transfer of Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon for an undisclosed fee claimed to be around £38m.

The 24 year-old midfielder flew into Tyneside on Thursday afternoon ahead of his medical, social media posts from supporters
on Friday picturing him at pitchside, holding a Newcastle shirt with number 41 - his Villa number.

Ramsey was a team mate of Anthony Gordon at the European U21 championships in 2023, although injury saw him miss England's Final victory over Spain.

14 goals in 136 Premier League appearances since 2020 for the Villa Academy graduate included an effort against Newcastle at Villa Park in 2023.

U21s:
Chelsea in Toon

Beaten 1-2 at home by Southampton in Sunday's opening PL2 fixture, Newcastle U21s return to Whitley Park for their next game in that competition this Friday night.

The Magpies host Chelsea in a 7pm kick-off, with the usual PL2 admission arrangements: free to season ticket holders or £3 adults/£1 concessions at the gate (cash).

The Blues made a winning start to their PL2 season on Monday, defeating the Champions Manchester City 3-1 at Kingsmeadow. 17 year-old Shim Mheuka hit a hat-trick.

Last season's meeting of the two sides on Tyneside ended in a 3-2 victory for the black and whites.

Update:
Jay at the Shay

National League side FC Halifax Town have completed the permanent signing of former Magpie Jay Turner-Cooke.

The 21 year-old attacking midfielder has been without a club since ending his four and a half year association with United in the summer.

Turner-Cooke faced the Shaymen in last season's National League Cup and is set for a reunion with the Magpies when the two sides meet in the same competition.

He's the latest player released by United at the end of last season to find a new club; fellow midfielder Ellis Stanton joining National League North side Darlington last week.

Giveaway:
Pitch prediction

We've partnered with Pitch Publishing, a sports book publisher with an already extensive range of NUFC related titles and several more due for release later in 2025.

Now available "The Battle for Newcastle United" is journalist Andrew Nagy's first book - an autobiographical account of a lifetime following Newcastle United.

He recounts his story via a 27 game selection, starting with the teenage optimism of the 1992 home win over Bristol City that began Kevin Keegan's second spell and ending with the Champions League humbling of PSG on Tyneside in 2023.

Without giving the game(s) away, Andrew's choices are memorable - but not always for positive reasons. A cast of heroes and villains appear; Ned Kelly and Sir Les are in there alongside JFK, the FCB and the bloke who liked bacon.

To be in with a chance of winning a copy, we asked you to predict the full time score in Newcastle's Premier League opener at Aston Villa - and six of you did just that.

That required a random draw, which saw Graham Bland and Jonathan Renney crowned as our champions.

Check out the Pitch catalogue here and find offers on current and future NUFC titles on Amazon here

PS: Andrew Nagy is signing his books at Waterstones in Newcastle from 1pm this coming Saturday, August 23rd.

Update:
Wissa: fresh doubts

Far from drawing closer as had been predicted, Monday brought reports that Newcastle's pursuit of Brentford's Yoane Wissa remained deadlocked.

The Bees have completed a club record £42m acquisition of Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth but remain unwilling to conclude a deal with the Magpies at an acceptable price.

Wissa wasn't involved on Sunday as Brentford lost 1-3 at Nottingham Forest in their season-opener. The DR Congo international turns 29 next month and is expected to spend part of January on African Nations Cup Final duty.

Isak timeline

Sun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Sun 18.05
Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than surgery was forecast.

Sun 25.05
Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.

Tue 27.05
Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to a minor injury, presumably groin.

Mon 14.07
Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for a week-long training camp.

Tue 15.07
The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.

Sat 19.07
Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming tour of Asia.

Mon 21.07
Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park but reportedly cut short the session.

(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)

Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.

Wed 23.07
Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace) Isak.

Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club".

The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial status.

Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would remain a Newcastle player.

Sun 27.07
Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.

Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.

Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak and he remained a Magpie.

Wed 30.07 Spanish media claims Isak is training alone in San Sebastian.

Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.

Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train separately from the rest of the senior squad.

Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol, Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.

Sat 16.08 Isak wasn't involved in the Premier League season opener at Aston Villa.

Tue 19.08 Isak released a statement explaining his absence from the PFA awards ceremony, which included this:

"The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading."

2025/26:
TV times

The Premier League have confirmed their live TV picks for September, with one Newcastle game rescheduled:

Sat 13.09.2025 Wolves (h) 3pm no live UK TV
Sat 20.09.2025 Bournemouth (a) 3pm no live UK TV
Sun 28.09.2025 Arsenal (h) 4.30pm Sky

The Arsenal game falls between Newcastle's midweek Carabao Cup Third Round tie* and the second round of Champions League fixtures, spread across Tuesday September 30th and Wednesday October 1st.

With reference to the Bournemouth away game, just because it hasn't been selected for live TV, that doesn't confirm 100% that it will be a 3pm Saturday kick-off.

The first round of Champions League fixtures take place on the preceding Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: were Newcastle to be in action on the Thursday, that would result in the Bournemouth game moving to the Sunday.

While the Spurs v Wolves game picked for Sky on Sunday 28th is liable to change if Spurs are playing a Champions League tie on the 30th, there's no similar advice regarding our game v Arsenal on the same day - reason unknown.

The situation mirrors for our game regardless of that: were ourselves or Arsenal to be playing in the Champions League on the 30th then we would not meet in the PL on the 28th.

So in real terms, only the Wolves game is now confirmed, with the other three liable to possible change in the days following the Champions League draw on August 28th.

* that is split over two successive midweeks, with teams involved in the Champions League assured of playing their Carabao Cup tie during second of the two weeks.

There are no scheduled rail works between London Kings Cross on the day of the Arsenal game. For once.

The Bournemouth game looks unaffected by rail engineering work on the Saturday. Were it to be played on the Sunday, trains would still run direct to and from London but with average journey times extended by 45 minutes and trains not calling at either Basingstoke or Winchester.

On This Day in History
19th August

Born Or Died:

1908 Joseph Richardson born, Bedlington. (1929-75, player & trainer)

Right back signed from Blyth Spartans in May 1929 who went on to amass nearly half a century of service at St.James' Park as both a player and coach.

Following the "other" J Richardson (outside right Jimmy) from Croft Park, Joe's senior debut came in a home FA Cup tie against Brighton and Hove Albion in February 1930, taking the number 2 shirt from Alf Maitland.

He then shared right back duties with Jimmy Nelson before finally displacing him in the opening weeks of the 1934-35 season, by which time United were in Division Two.

Recognised by England schoolboys in 1925, Joe would win one full cap for his country, in an unofficial friendly international staged at SJP in December 1939.

When Manchester City duo Eric Brook and Sam Barkas were injured in a car accident en route to Tyneside, Richardson and fellow Magpie Tommy Pearson stood in for England in a 2-1 victory over Scotland.

Remaining at Gallowgate during wartime, Richardson's final first team appearances came in the various competitions the club entered during the 1944-45 campaign.

Thereafter he coached United's apprentices and reserves until his death in 1977.

1944 Peter Noble born, sunderland.
(1964-68)

Beginning his career with Consett, Peter moved to SJP for £1,000 in November 1964, debuting in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in September 1965.

Used mainly as a striker with forays into midfield, Noble struggled with a persistent knee injury and had appeared just once in the 1967/68 season, when he was sold to Swindon Town in January 1968 for £8,000.

An integral part of the Third Division side's unlikely League Cup triumph in 1969, Peter broke a shoulder blade in the semi-final - an injury that wasn't detected for five years.

Picking up an Anglo Italian Cup winner's medal (and a loser's one) while at the County Ground, his 80 goals in 251 games assured him of legendary status.

Signed by Burnley in the summer of 1973, he played initially as a right back and occupied that role at Hillsborough in March 1974, when the Clarets were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle in an FA Cup Semi Final.

Restored to a more familiar midfield role though, Peter came back to haunt United  in November of that year, netting a hat trick of headers as we crashed 4-1 at Turf Moor.

Moving on to Blackpool in 1980, Noble played on for another two years before retiring. He later owned a sports shop in Burnley.

Peter passed away in May 2017.

1977 Graham Pepper born, Newcastle.
(1991-95)

Full back who joined United as a schoolboy and featured at U15 level in their Northern Ireland Milk Cup campaign of 1991.

Graduating from the youth ranks into the reserve squad, Pepper's competitive debut in the Pontins League came during the 1993/94 season.

However he failed to win a professional deal and left SJP in November 1995, initially joining Darlington then Spennymoor United.

By 1998 Pepper had signed for Gateshead, before spells with both Blyth Spartans and Whitley Bay alongside his brother, Carl.

Away from football Graham worked for the family business, Darlington-based engineering company Pepper Draughting Structural.

1984 Ryan Taylor born, Liverpool.
(2009-15)

Midfielder/defender signed from Wigan Athletic in February 2009 as part of the deal taking Charles N'Zogbia to the JJB.

Beginning his career at Tranmere Rovers as a teenager, Taylor made a goalscoring debut in 2002 in a 2-1 win at Hartlepool.

Signed by Wigan at a cost of £1.25m ahead of the 2005/06 season, he faced Newcastle as a substitute on their first visit to the JJB in October of that year.

England U21 recognition followed that month, Ryan lining up for his debut in the same XI as Magpies namesake Steven.

Returning from injury the following April in a reserve game against Newcastle at Kingston Park however, Ryan suffered a broken leg - having earlier put the Latics ahead with a 30-yard effort.

Out until the following January, Taylor found the net with a free kick against Newcastle in the Premier League a month after his playing return - and then repeated the trick in each of the following two seasons, also weighing with a goal from open play at SJP in 2008.

Initially featuring in right midfield, Taylor's debut came in a 3-2 victory at West Bromwich Albion in January 2009.

United's demotion to the Championship saw Taylor rediscover his goalscoring touch, getting off the mark early one with a decent finish at Selhurst Park against Palace.

The 2010/11 season saw just six starts for Ryan, three in the Premier League and three in the League Cup, also coming on as substitute twice in the league.

He scored twice in the cup, including a fabulous long range effort at Accrington Stanley but a reckless challenge in our Premier League fixture at home to Bolton Wanderers saw him red-carded.

Following the departure of Jose Enrique to Liverpool, Taylor then began the 2011/12 season at left back and in just his second game famously sent his free kick "over the wall" to secure victory at the mackems.

Repeating the feat in the next game away to Scunthorpe, the boyhood Liverpool fan then marked the birth of son Henry with another howitzer to help defeat Everton at SJP.

Making 34 appearances - ten off the bench - that season, Taylor held various positions in defence and midfield.

However the following season saw him forced off early in the home Europa League game against Greek side Atromitos in August 2012, having netted in the away leg.

Diagnosed with cruciate ligament damage, Ryan missed the following eight months but looked to be on course for a comeback - only to break down with a recurrence of the same injury during April 2013.

Resuming training the following year, Taylor was kept busy undertaking some scouting missions and coaching the reserve side, rejoining the first team squad in July 2014 for pre-season training - although he didn't appear in any of their friendly fixtures.

Following two reserve outings and three goals, Ryan returned to senior service with a gutsy performance in a Capital One Cup win at Manchester City in October 2014.

After a substitute outing at West Brom, Taylor made the starting XI for a home league game with QPR - only to be forced off before half time with further knee problems.

Happily that wasn't as bad as first feared and he returned in February, featured in a dozen more games before being released - his final appearance a 1-2 loss at QPR in May.

Claiming to have heard that he wasn't to be retained in the same phone call John Carver made to Jonas Gutierrez, Taylor joined newly relegated Hull City for pre-season training and soon signed a 12 month contract.

The Tigers duly gained promotion but Ryan hardly featured in league games and was released in the summer of 2016.

Trials with both Rotherham United and his former club Wigan Athletic failed to bring a contract offer for the free agent before a deal was agreed with League one side Port Vale in October 2016.

The following March then saw Taylor travel to the USA for a brief trial with MLS side Chicago Fire, but he was soon back in action for the Valiants while seeking a new club.

And that came to pass during December 2017, when he signed for Indian Premier League side Atletico De Kolkata.

Ryan then extended his career by joining Fleetwood Town in September 2018 - the club by then under the management of his former SJP colleague, Joey Barton.

Making the last of 11 senior appearances for them three months later, Taylor failed to get back into the side - needing surgery for a badly broken nose sustained in a friendly match.

Released in May 2019, He joined Northern Premier League Division One North West side Colne in October 2020, ending his playing days at Buxton in 2022.

Ryan has worked as an NUFC Ambassador at domestic and overseas venues, turning up in Toon away ends for various games.

Unchanged from our 3-2 opening day win against Wolves, nothing went right for United in the Potteries.

Stoke's opener was scored via a decisive deflection off Bob Moncur, whose poor return pass to goalkeeper Iam McFaul then gifted the hosts a second goal.

The misery was then completed near full time, when McFaul was sold a dummy by a City player and Jimmy Smith's back pass rolled into the back of the United net.

Almost inevitably United lost, with John Trewick netting, John Craggs hitting the crossbar and trialist Steve Doyle's penalty saved.

Following relegation from the top-flight the previous season, manager Jim Smith presented his rebuilt side to a Tyneside public who were unconvinced - and in some cases absent (due to a boycott organised by the United "Supporters For Change" group).

With just four players remaining from their last competitive game - Tommy Wright, Kevin Scott, Andy Thorn and Kevin Brock - there were recalls for Paul Sweeney & Ray Ranson.

Debuts were handed to Kevin Dillon, Wayne Fereday, John Gallacher and Mark McGhee (over a decade after his first one).

The visitors meanwhile included former Mags John Hendrie, Ian Baird and Peter Haddock, plus future black and whiter David Batty.

However, the day belonged to United's fifth new boy, Mickey Quinn. Emulating Malcolm Macdonald by opening his account with a penalty conversion in front of the Gallowgate End, he then went on to better Macs' three goal home debut haul.

Howard Wilkinson's side led at the interval, but just two minutes after the restart Quinn headed in to level matters before completing his hat trick by shooting past Mervyn Day.

John Gallacher then cheekily netted before Quinn rounded off an amazing day by converting with an inch-perfect low drive from the edge of the box.
