Isak: NUFC respond

The publication of a statement by Alexander Isak on Tuesday prompted the following response from NUFC:

"We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening. We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.

"We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met.

"This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates."

The conditions of a sale have been interpreted variously as the claimed selling price and/or the acquisition of striking replacements.

For the latter to be as problematic due in part to Liverpool's decision to sign Hugo Ekitike remains inexplicable.

Latest:
Isak breaks silence

Statement from Alexander Isak on instagram, following his failure to attend Tuesday's PFA awards ceremony in Manchester:

"I'm proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25.

"First and foremost I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way.

"I'm not at the ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn't feel right to be there.

"I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.

"The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.

"When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”

Alexander Isak

Our musings:

It's nice of the player to pipe up after his summertime disappearing act, having allowed others to do his work during the last month or so.

Whatever faint hopes of a temporary reconciliation would certainly now appear to be over - there's no patching this one up. That of course is the intention - arriving at the same point as submitting a transfer request, but without the financial jeopardy of doing that. Perish the thought.

What those promises were, who made them and when they were made will now prompt a further avalanche of media coverage to obscure the inconvenient fact that nothing was written down and there is no release clause.

If we're talking about statements, one in the form of an acceptable bid from a certain club would be a start - but doubtless they'll be keeping well clear until the dust settles after this latest development.

Rafa Benitez is fond of saying that "football is a lie", but the pursuit of truth in this unsavoury situation is becoming less important than solving the conundrum of replacing Isak.

PS: On July 24th, when Isak told Newcastle he wanted to "explore a move away from the club" we wrote that:

The message is clear: a concerted campaign from the North West involving briefings to sympathetic media outlets has succeeded in unsettling the player and encouraged his representatives.

This latest development will doubtless prompt a backlash against Isak from disgruntled Newcastle fans, which will then be advanced as a reason for his inevitable exit.

The circus moves on to Gallowgate next Monday, with Sky on hand to record every chant and shout. And so it goes.

Update:
Mercenary reacts

Michael Owen quotes on Isak, Wednesday - a mixture of justifiable comments and the inevitable pro-Anfield bluster:

"It’s been really fascinating watching it unfold. Isak stayed very quiet and, despite everybody talking like he’s done 100 statements, that’s the first thing he’s said.

"It’s nice for the public to have everything clarified. It’s interesting that he makes out that they’ve already had talks a long time ago about him potentially leaving, he feels that they’ve gone back on their word.

"He’s given them a great service, they’ve qualified for the Champions League, won a trophy, but he wants out.

"I get it from a footballer’s point of view, you only get one short career, you want to play for the best teams, and this might be his one big chance to do so, but obviously Newcastle hold the aces, they’ve got him under contract.

"Sadly, if you’re going to force a move, then it’s not pretty, the actions that a player takes can’t be pretty, and that’s what we’re seeing.

"Whether he puts in a transfer request or is refusing to play, which is obviously the end of the scale, there’s not much worse you can do than that, to refuse to come in.

"He’s doing everything he can to force that dream move and I hear it, I understand it but I don’t necessarily agree with it, but I also don’t sit here and say that no other footballer would do that, of course they would.

"There’s loads of pundits out there that are up in arms about what’s happening but I can guarantee that they’d be doing the same.

"This is one short career, it’s not like he came through the ranks, it’s not like he’s a born and bred Geordie, he is basically trying to be as good a player as he can be in a short career and if that means forcing a move to probably the best team in the world then I get why he’s doing it.

"I just look at the alternative, and nobody says a word nine times out of ten when clubs force a player out against their will, the reality is that happens all the time, the clubs do all the dirty stuff."

Premier League:
Liverpool (h)

Newcastle kick off their home Premier League campaign by receiving the reigning champions for an 8pm kick-off on Monday.

It's an 8pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports and sold out.

Following the Carabao Cup Final success in March, United are seeking back to back wins against the Reds for the first time since November 1995, when a 2-1 PL home victory was swiftly followed by 1-0 League Cup away win.

However the Magpies haven't beaten Liverpool in the PL since December 2015, when they prevailed 2-0 at SJP.

Since then, the 17 league meetings have resulted in five draws and 12 losses.

Team: Saturday's draw away to Aston Villa brought no new injuries to light. Joe Willock has returned to training three weeks after suffering a calf injury - at the time he was predicted to be sidelined between four and six weeks.

Recent recruits Malick Thiaw, Aaron Ramsdale and Park Seung-soo were on the bench at Villa Park, with Jacob Ramsey's move to Tyneside confirmed since then.

LFC:
Jeremie Frimpong misses out due to injury while Conor Bradley is doubtful.

The Reds began their title defence with a 4-2 home victory over Bournemouth on Friday night.

Referee: Simon Hooper - the Wiltshire whistler began his PL season by taking charge of Arsenal's 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Hooper's most recent appointment to a Newcastle game was our 0-1 reverse at Arsenal back in May. His last sighting at SJP was the 2-0 Carabao Cup second leg success against the Gunners: this will be his first PL appearance at Gallowgate since the 4-1 home win over Chelsea in November 2023.

Beaten 1-2 at home by Southampton in Sunday's opening PL2 fixture, Newcastle U21s return to Whitley Park for their next game in that competition this Friday night.

The Magpies host Chelsea in a 7pm kick-off, with the usual PL2 admission arrangements: free to season ticket holders or £3 adults/£1 concessions at the gate (cash).

The Blues made a winning start to their PL2 season on Monday, defeating the Champions Manchester City 3-1 at Kingsmeadow. 17 year-old Shim Mheuka hit a hat-trick.

Last season's meeting of the two sides on Tyneside ended in a 3-2 victory for the black and whites.

Update:
Jay at the Shay

National League side FC Halifax Town have completed the permanent signing of former Magpie Jay Turner-Cooke.

The 21 year-old attacking midfielder has been without a club since ending his four and a half year association with United in the summer.

Turner-Cooke faced the Shaymen in last season's National League Cup and is set for a reunion with the Magpies when the two sides meet in the same competition.

He's the latest player released by United at the end of last season to find a new club; fellow midfielder Ellis Stanton joining National League North side Darlington last week.

Pitch prediction

We've partnered with Pitch Publishing, a sports book publisher with an already extensive range of NUFC related titles and several more due for release later in 2025.

Now available "The Battle for Newcastle United" is journalist Andrew Nagy's first book - an autobiographical account of a lifetime following Newcastle United.

He recounts his story via a 27 game selection, starting with the teenage optimism of the 1992 home win over Bristol City that began Kevin Keegan's second spell and ending with the Champions League humbling of PSG on Tyneside in 2023.

Without giving the game(s) away, Andrew's choices are memorable - but not always for positive reasons. A cast of heroes and villains appear; Ned Kelly and Sir Les are in there alongside JFK, the FCB and the bloke who liked bacon.

To be in with a chance of winning a copy, we asked you to predict the full time score in Newcastle's Premier League opener at Aston Villa - and six of you did just that.

That required a random draw, which saw Graham Bland and Jonathan Renney crowned as our champions.

Check out the Pitch catalogue here and find offers on current and future NUFC titles on Amazon here

PS: Andrew Nagy is signing his books at Waterstones in Newcastle from 1pm this coming Saturday, August 23rd.

Isak timeline

Sun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Sun 18.05
Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than surgery was forecast.

Sun 25.05
Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.

Tue 27.05
Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to a minor injury, presumably groin.

Mon 14.07
Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for a week-long training camp.

Tue 15.07
The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.

Sat 19.07
Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming tour of Asia.

Mon 21.07
Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park but reportedly cut short the session.

(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)

Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.

Wed 23.07
Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace) Isak.

Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club".

The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial status.

Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would remain a Newcastle player.

Sun 27.07
Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.

Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.

Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak and he remained a Magpie.

Wed 30.07 Spanish media claimed that Isak was training alone in San Sebastian.

Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.

Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train separately from the rest of the senior squad.

Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol, Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.

Sat 16.08 Isak wasn't involved in the Premier League season opener at Aston Villa, with travelling supporters airing "one greedy bastard" chants after full time.

Tue 19.08 Isak released a statement explaining his absence from the PFA awards ceremony, which included this:

"The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading."

Tue 19.08 NUFC released their own statement.

On This Day in History
21st August

Born Or Died:

1908 Johnny Dryden born, Broomhill.
(1932-34)

Outside left signed by Newcastle for £175 from Ashington in September 1932, debuting in a 0-3 home FA Cup loss to Leeds United the following January.

With first team opportunities limited due to the form of Tommy Pearson, May 1934 saw Dryden move on to Exeter City.

Later transfers then saw him appear in the colours of Sheffield United, Bristol City, Burnley and Peterborough United.

Living back in his native Northumberland, Jack passed away in September 1975.

1940 Jimmy Scott born, Falkirk, Scotland.
(1967-70)

Right winger whose part in Magpies history is assured, for his exploits in the Inter Cities Fairs Cup campaign of 1968/69.

Joining Falkirk from Denny Rovers, Jim never made a senior appearance for his hometown side before moving on to Bo'ness United and then Hibernian.

In almost a decade at Easter Road, Scott appeared in the Fairs Cup and was called up once for Scotland, against Holland in 1966.

Joe Harvey paid £37,500 to bring Jim to SJP in 1967 and 48 hours after turning 27, he celebrated by scoring on his debut against Southampton at St.James' Park.

A year later, Scott netted United's first goal in Europe, against Feyenoord and followed it up with three more strikes in that campaign - one in Lisbon, one at home to Rangers in the riot game and one in the final first leg against the Hungarians of Ujpest Dozsa.

Jim also found the net the following season against Porto, before moving on to Crystal Palace in February 1970.

Two years later he returned to Scotland with Falkirk, retiring in February 1974, by which time he'd joined Hamilton Accies.

In later years Jim worked at Aitkens bar in his hometown and greeted many Toon fans who made pilgrimages to meet him and view his Fairs Cup winning shirt on the pub wall.

2009 saw Jim back at SJP with his former United colleagues for the 40th anniversary celebrations of their European success.

1959 Keith Mulgrove born, Haltwhistle. (1977-78)

Full back who came through the junior ranks at Gallowgate but had to trek to Brighton's Goldstone Ground to make his lone senior appearance, replacing Colin Suggett during a 0-2 defeat in December 1978.

Moving on to play for Barrow, Keith later became a postman in the Tyne Valley.

1962 Nigel Pearson born, Nottingham.
(2006-08 Coach, Caretaker Mgr)

As a player, Nigel was a no-nonsense centre half for Heanor Town, Shrewsbury Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough before becoming Carlisle boss in 1998.

Coaching at both Stoke City and West Brom, Pearson was appointed as Glenn Roeder's number two in October 2006, following the dismissal of former assistant Kevin Bond.

Taking caretaker charge of the last game of that season at Watford following Roeder's exit, Pearson remained at SJP under Sam Allardyce - once again taking caretaker charge when another vacancy appeared.

Two games under his charge saw Newcastle beaten 6-0 at Old Trafford before a 4-1 home win over Stoke in the FA Cup on the night Kevin Keegan returned to the club.

Pearson duly departed from SJP within a few weeks and after a brief spell in charge at Southampton, was appointed Leicester City boss in June 2008.

Under his guidance, the Foxes secured promotion from League One and Pearson found himself up against Newcastle in the Championship, before making a switch to newly-relegated Hull City in summer 2010.

Despite a reasonable record at the KC Stadium though, he resigned for "personal reasons" in November 2011. A return to Leicester quickly followed - after Milan Mandaric sold the Foxes to new owners.

The Championship title was clinched with little issue in 2014, Pearson given a new deal upon returning to the Premier League.

The Foxes seemed destined for a swift return to the Championship but Pearson guided them to safety with seven wins out of the last nine games of the 2014/15 campaign.

Media claims of his sacking in February 2015 were premature, but following some tetchy exchanges with pressmen Nigel exited in late June - the emergence of a sex tape featuring his son (a City player) filmed on City's tour of Thailand seemingly the final straw.

Linked various vacancies, May 2016 found Nigel interviewed by newly-relegated Aston Villa over their position, only to appear as Derby County's new manager soon after.

However, that proved to be fairly disastrous and following behind the scenes disputes with the Rams he left within six months.

One of the favourites to be appointed as smoggies boss in Summer 2017, Nigel lost out to Garry Monk. Installed as boss of Belgian side OH Leuven that September, he was dismissed during February 2019.

He worked as a media pundit and then took charge of Watford in December of that year and steered them clear of relegation from the Premier League.

Looking set to repeat that feat in the following COVID-disrupted season, Pearson was sacked with just three games to play and the Hornets were duly demoted.

In February 2021 he became manager of Bristol City until the end of the season and subsequently signed a three year deal but after a poor run of results he left in October 2023.

Pearson suffered a "neurological situation" towards the end of his tenure at Ashton Gate and had to learn to walk again.

1992 Haris Vuckic born, Ljubljana, Slovenia (2009-17)

16 year-old forward signed from Slovenian side NK Domzale for an undisclosed fee in 2009, debuting within hours for the U18s in an FA Youth Cup loss at Manchester City.

Two weeks on and Haris was back in the North West with Newcastle, scoring the winner against Blackburn Rovers reserves within three minutes of arriving as a sub.

Netting four times for the reserves in pre-season,
Haris was promoted to the first team for the League Cup visit of Huddersfield Town that August and made two further appearances in the Championship.

Two months later however, he sustained an ankle injury while on international duty and was sidelined until April 2010.

Featuring in first team friendlies ahead of the 2010/11 season, Vuckic played in three League Cup ties before further ankle trouble led to a further six months out.

Signing a new five and a half year deal in early 2011, Alan Pardew then included him in a senior pre-season tour of the USA.

Netting against Columbus Crew and at Leeds, Haris made five further first team appearances for United but was again sidelined after dislocating a finger against Fulham at SJP a month later.

Joining Championship side Cardiff City on loan in February 2012, Vuckic played five times for the Bluebirds and scored once before injury saw him return to Tyneside.

Preparations for the 2012/13 season then saw Haris feature in all eight of Newcastle's pre-season friendlies, scoring in a penalty shootout against Olympiakos in Portugal and at Hartlepool.

Coming off the bench to score his first senior goal at home to Atromitos in the Europa League, a knee injury in a reserve game at Aston Villa in October 2012 again ended his season prematurely.

Back to fitness ahead of the 2013/14 campaign, Vuckic marked his return by scoring after just eight minutes of his comeback in a friendly at Motherwell.

Training with Bradford City ahead of a loan, instead he switched to League One side Rotherham United with James Tavernier.

Haris frustratingly spent much of his time on the bench but did feature in a Wembley playoff final success over Leyton Orient.

Inheriting Shola Ameobi's 23 squad number in July 2014 Haris played in six of United's eight friendlies but remained on the fringes of the squad with an uncertain future.

A first Premier League outing since 2011 came in the final minutes of a 1-3 loss at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, before a start in a 0-1 FA Cup loss at Leicester City

One of five Magpies loaned to Rangers in February 2015, he scored nine times but failed to help them win promotion to the SPL.

Next came a season-long loan to Wigan Athletic where he won a League One Championship medal but was never a regular starter and netted just twice.

Back at SJP for 2016/17 - the final season of his contract - Haris was loaned to Bradford City before a trial at Dutch side FC Twente.

Signing a three year contract with them once a free agent, he reached double figures for the first time in a league season when scoring 11 times in 2019/20.

Later moves took Haris to Real Zaragoza (Spain), HNK Rijeka (Croatia) and Buriram United (Thailand) before a return to NK Domzale in 2024.

A Slovenian U17 international when moving to United, selections at U19 and U21 level soon came, before a first full cap against Scotland in February 2012

What Else?

1909 Albert Shepherd gave United's first team a half-time lead in a practice match at Gallowgate, Jimmy Stewart levelling for the shadow XI after the break.

1920
Another practice match between two Magpie XIs at SJP ended with the Stripes (probables) defeating the Whites (possibles) 2-1.

20,000 fans saw goals from Ted Ward and Andrew Smailes, Curtis Booth netting a penalty kick in between.

1925 Following stints in charge of South Shields and Preston North End, former Newcastle goalkeeper Jimmy Lawrence was confirmed as trainer/coach of German side Karlsruhe.

Newcastle's Alan Monkhouse completed the second half with one arm strapped across his chest after injuring a shoulder - but that didn't stop him shooting against the goal frame at 2-1.

1954 The reserves also made a winning start to the season, scoring four goals without reply against Sheffield United in the Central League at Gallowgate.

Those United fans who hadn't journeyed to Hillsborough or Turf Moor got their chance to assess Joe Harvey's latest purchase on his home debut.

Tommy Gibb didn't let them down with a 25 yard drive which began a fight back from a 2-0 deficit, caused by Bobby Tambling and Alan Birchenall.

Harvey later said, "That was the lifeblood of soccer, that was entertainment. It had everything - a brilliant second half show that matched anything I have known."

A stunning home debut for Joe Harvey's new acquisition from Luton gave Supermac instant hero status. John Toshack had a goal mysteriously disallowed and Tommy Smith a penalty saved by Iam McFaul that would have given the visitors a half-time lead.

But United went up the other end and Macdonald got his second. The hat-trick was complete after the break and Supermac left the field concussed after colliding with Ray Clemence, almost grabbing a late fourth.

Fun and games on the first day of a new season as United took an early lead when Rocky Hudson latched on to Alan Gowling's header and shot home.

The Rams recovered to lead 2-1 through David Nish and Charlie George before Colin Todd gave away a penalty for pulling down Gowling in the area.

Tommy Craig converted and the Rams lost the plot, George dismissed for lashing out at John Bird and Archie Gemmill earning a booking for kicking Irving Nattrass.

Loutish Leighton James was also lucky to stay on the field and was lectured by a Police Sergeant in the tunnel after full time!

1978 Peter Withe made a £200K switch from Nottingham Forest to Newcastle.

Despite failing to add to his First Division Championship medal (and a European Cup later at Aston Villa) though, the Scouser was a worthy wearer of the number nine shirt at SJP and the best header of the ball we had until Sir Les strode into Toon.

Newcastle began the season on an incident-packed Sunday afternoon at Filbert Street, live on Sky Sports.

There were debuts for Philippe Albert and Marc Hottiger as the visiting defence just about contained the livewire Julian Joachim in the opening half.

Peter Beardsley then set up Andy Cole to shoot United ahead before adding a second himself. Pedro wouldn't finish the game though, led from the field after smashing his cheekbone again late on.

3-0 up, Pavel Srnicek saved Mark Draper's penalty on the hour but was later dismissed after tripping Joachim outside the box.

On came the lumbering Mike Hooper, who almost immediately conceded. He had been introduced at the expense of Alex Mathie, who had replaced Beardsley just three minutes earlier.

An incredible night on Tyneside ended with United bowing out of the Intertoto Cup.

Nobby Solano scored early on but two goals in three first half minutes for the French side left us in trouble.

It seemed all over at 1-4 with less than half an hour to go but Shola Ameobi reduced the arrears and then won a penalty which Gary Speed just about converted.

Robbie Elliott's last minute header then put United on the brink, but an injury-time winner never arrived and Troyes held on to claim a UEFA Cup spot.

Newcastle's unbeaten home record in 2004 was ended by a side who had been humped 4-0 at SJP the previous December.

Kieron Dyer's substitute appearance was greeted with sporadic boos, but most fans were more worried about the plight of the team than Dyer, as United toiled to equalise Timothée Atouba's solo strike.

2006 The Belgravia Group confirmed that it was looking at acquiring Newcastle United Plc, following press speculation that the Jersey-based investment firm was on the verge of making a bid.

2009 The deadline came and went with no announcement from NUFC about local man Barry Moat taking over the club. A revised deadline of Monday 24th August was then supposed to see United make a formal utterance, but the bid died a death.

Newcastle remained pointless after two games following a loss that was equally disappointing and infuriating.

Failing to
turn their early dominance into goals, a five man defence then proved unable to contain the Villans - who were greatly aided by the officials.

Jamaal Lascelles had a penalty awarded against him for handball that no Villa player appealed for and Callum Wilson was denied a second half spot kick after VAR deemed that he was fractionally offside.

An incredible game at SJP ended all square; United recovering from going a goal down to lead 3-1, but hanging on for a point after seeing a dismissal rescinded.

Two crucial decisions that initially went against United were overturned by VAR; Miggy Almiron's equaliser initially ruled out for offside and Kieran Trippier's red card amended to yellow after clueless referee Jarred Gillett was invited to review the pitchside monitor.
