Manic Monday

Newcastle 2
Liverpool 3
A game that had threatened to be overshadowed by
the saga of Alexander Isak in the end served up enough incident and
drama to banish thoughts of the absent striker - at
least for 102 manic minutes at Gallowgate on Monday.
Sadly for Newcastle though, a gargantuan effort that saw them
recover from falling 0-2 behind and going down to ten men left them
empty-handed after a 16 year-old debutant scored the winning goal
deep into second half added time.
And in addition to an unwanted suspension headache, Eddie Howe was
landed with three injury issues to contend with as the clock ticks
down towards the end of a bewildering and brutal transfer window.
Backed by unwavering home support, an unchanged United side from
that which had taken a point from their opening game at Aston Villa
mounted a superhuman effort to press back the reigning champions
in their own half.
For all their effort and endeavour though, Allison in the Liverpool
goal was barely tested before the visitors went ahead on 35 minutes;
Ryan Gravenberch firing a low shot from distance that took a slight
deflection off Fabian Schar that left Nick Pope flat-footed in the
Gallowgate End goal.
Worse was to come in first half added time, when Anthony Gordon's
manic dash across the Liverpool backline in an attempt to retrieve
possession ended with him clattering into Virgil van Dijk and seeing
red after a pitchside VAR review.
That may have provoked negative chanting from some home fans, but
like Gordon's red card transgression last season against Brighton in
the FA Cup, this was needless, indefensible and brainless given our
striker shortage.
When former Toon transfer target Hugo Ekitike powered home his third
goal in as many games just 20 seconds after the interval the game
looked over as a contest - only for Bruno Guimaraes to throw himself
at Tino Livramento's left wing cross and head home to halve the
deficit.
That came just before the hour mark, but while the goal roused the
crowd again, United's hopes of continuing their revival received a
treble blow when Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and Fabian Schar were all
forced off due to injuries.
The introduction of five replacements brought maiden outings for
both Malick Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey, but it was substitute William
Osula who conjured up an improbable leveller after following in
Pope's long kick upfield with just two minutes of normal time
remaining.
An additional 11 minutes were added (mostly caused by Liverpool
time-wasting) as the hosts attempted to seal the most incredible
comeback against a Reds side who never held the initiative despite
their numerical advantage.
Sadly though, in much the same way that Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler
had broken United hearts in those two 4-3 games at Anfield, the
extra time agony came from 16 year-old Rio Ngumoha, who took less
than five minutes of his senior debut to fire home from inside the
box after Dominik
Szoboszlai
dummied Mo Salah's centre from the right.
Despite the selection
issues, the spirit and endeavour that brought us Wembley success
against this opponent last time out was channelled again here
tonight - and against the odds, it almost worked.
Luck of judgment may have deserted us at crucial times tonight, but
there was no lack of collective effort and an incredible amount of
energy was expended in what ended up as a fruitless pursuit. The Isak absence may be affecting
us statistically but not mentally.
If not for the Gordon stupidity, this would have been categorised as
glorious failure. Sadly though, the hangover threatens to impact on
our next set of games, even without the transfer window madness.
It's never dull round here.
Team: Pope, Trippier (Hall 76), Livramento, Burn, Schar (Thiaw
81), Joelinton (Ramsey 76), Tonali (L.Miley 66), Guimaraes, Elanga,
Barnes (Osula 76), Gordon.
Subs n/u: Botman, J.Murphy, Ramsdale, Willock.
Goals: Guimaraes 57, Osula 88
Booked: Burn, Guimaraes
Sent off: Gordon (straight red 45+3)
LFC: Allison, Szoboszlai, Kerkez, Jones (Elliott 90+6), van
Dijk, Konate, Gravenberch, Gakpo (Ngumoha 90+6), Wirtz (Bradley 80),
Salah (Endo 90+12), Ekitike (Chiesa 80).
Subs n/u: Gomez, Leoni, Mamardashvili, Robertson.
Booked: Gravenberch, Konate, Bradley
Goals: Gravenberch 35, Ekitike 46, Ngumoha 90+10
Crowd: 52,230 including 3,000 travelling fans.
Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan
was in attendance.
Eddie Howe:
"A bruising game for us with so many different emotions.
"I'm really proud of the performance, really pleased with how
we played, great energy, great intensity, really pleased with the
following of the game plan and then adapting because we go to 10 men
and for me we're the better team in the second half as well as the
first.
"It's a really tough night for us from a number of fronts. Really
painful one for us. I think we deserved something from the game.
"We get no points, we get injuries. Joelinton and (Sandro)
Tonali don't look good. (Anthony) Gordon will be suspended
and Fabian (Schar) was concussed.
"We had a mountain to climb at 2-0 down and 10 men. We fought
unbelievably well to come back. Of course you’re frustrated when you
deserve to get points."
On Anthony Gordon’s red card:
"I've only seen it once back and it was very quick as the game was
going on. I think Anthony was going in full blooded into the
challenge and he's tried to pull out and slipped and his momentums
taken him in. It didn't look good but I don't think there was any
intent."
"Of course he wants it a lot but he’s gone in for a tackle at
an awkward angle...there was no intention or malice to hurt Virgil
van Dijk.”
On a possible return for Alexander Isak:
"I’ve got no idea on that. I’ve been here. Certainly far from ideal
to lose a forward option but great to see Will Osula come on and
score tonight.”
On Osula's goal:
"It was a great finish from him and a big moment for us because at
that moment you think could we go on and win the game.
"We put a lot of set plays into their box, we asked a lot of
questions of them defensively but you always feel in that moment,
especially with 11 minutes of injury time there's always going to be
chances for both teams and unfortunately, they took two of theirs in
that second half."
On the Liverpool winner:
"It's a great finish from their perspective. We'd be disappointed
with how we conceded that, even though we had a man less."
Referee: Simon
Hooper - a first appointment involving Newcastle for the Wiltshire
whistler since the 0-1 PL reverse
at Arsenal back in May.
Hooper's last sighting at SJP was for the 2-0 Carabao Cup
second leg success against the Gunners and tonight was his first PL
appearance at Gallowgate since the 4-1 home win over Chelsea in November
2023.

Stats:
There were Premier League debuts for Jacob Ramsey and Malick
Thiaw, taking the number of players to represent Newcastle in that
competition up to 272.
Bruno Guimaraes netted his 22nd PL goal for Newcastle, taking him
level with fellow countryman Joelinton and SJP old boy Laurent Robert.
William Osula registered his second PL strike as a Magpie, like his
first that has come against Ipswich Town last season, it came at the
Gallowgate End.
This is the second time that a Brazilian and a Dane have scored against
Liverpool at SJP for United, following an equally mad game in February 1989
when Mirandinha and Frank Pingel were both on target in a 2-2 draw.
Anthony Gordon was dismissed for the third time as a United
player, having previously seen red during the 4-3 home PL win over West Ham
in March 2024 and the 1-2 home FA Cup loss to Brighton in March 2025.
This transgression is set to see him miss PL games away to Leeds, at home to
Wolves and away to Bournemouth.

visit to Blyth Spartans.
Joe White (Leyton

The midfielder was named on the bench for Saturday's League One visit to
Mansfield Town. He came on in the 70th minute when the O's trailed 1-3 and it ended
1-4.
Aidan Harris (Coleraine):
Aidan played the full game for Coleraine at Glenavon in the Northern Irish

Following their season-opening 3-0 home victory over Blackburn
Rovers last weekend, Newcastle U18s collected another three points
and a clean sheet on Saturday.
There was a debut from the bench for Alfie Seldon and the 15
year-old crossed soon after his
arrival for Alfie Hutchison to head home his first
goal since arriving from Rangers.
That gave United a 69th minute advantage and Sam Alabi's 89th minute
penalty conversion in the 89th minute ensured that Chris Moore's
side triumphed in the Black County.
Team: Mair, Johnson, Goodbrand, Epia (Patterson 87), Old,

conclude a loan deal sending full back Matt Target to Boro for
the remainder of the season.
The 29 year-old is in the last year of his contract at SJP and hasn't
started a Premier League game for the Magpies since September 2023.

Meltdown:
Isak timeline
Sun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League
goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at
Brighton.
Sun 18.05 Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told
the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than
surgery was forecast.
Sun 25.05 Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to
Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.
Tue 27.05 Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to
a minor injury, presumably groin.
Mon 14.07 Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for
a week-long training camp.
Tue 15.07 The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they
were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.
Sat 19.07 Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the
media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more
training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming
tour of Asia.
Mon 21.07 Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park
but reportedly cut short the session.
(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)
Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane
Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.
Wed 23.07 Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo
Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace)
Isak.
Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media
outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move
away from the club".
The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an
extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per
week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial
status.
Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a
basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's
thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would
remain a Newcastle player.
Sun 27.07 Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there
was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.
Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.
Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak
and he remained a Magpie.
Wed 30.07 Spanish media claimed that Isak was training alone in San
Sebastian.
Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.
Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train
separately from the rest of the senior squad.
Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol,
Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No
disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.
Sat 16.08 Isak wasn't involved in the Premier League season opener at
Aston Villa, with travelling supporters airing "one greedy bastard" chants
after full time.
Tue 19.08 Isak released a statement explaining his absence from the
PFA awards ceremony, which included this:
"The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my
position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is
misleading."
Tue 19.08 NUFC released their own statement.

Born Or Died:
1878 Edward Lawson Birnie born,
sunderland.
(1898-1905)

Centre half Ted was signed from
Sunderland Seaburn in June 1898, debuting three
months later in a 1-2 home loss to Notts County - as a
forward.
That proved to be his only first team outing of the
season, with the following campaign seeing him play six
times in defence.
Occasional appearances in various positions over the
following season encouraged him to move on to Southern
League Crystal Palace, later playing over 100 games for
Chelsea.
Ending his playing career at Spurs in 1910, Ted was later
trainer of German side Mulheim before returning to the UK
to take up similar roles at Leyton, his hometown club and
two spells at Rochdale.
Installed as Southend United boss in 1922, he retired
through ill-health twelve years later and passed away in
December 1935.

1923 Jimmy Greenhalgh born,
Manchester. (trainer,1962-66)

As a player, Jimmy served Hull City, Bury,
Gillingham and Wigan before moving to SJP in June 1962 as
Joe Harvey's assistant.
Playing a part in the club's return to the top flight in
1965, Jimmy left a year later to become Darlington
manager, remaining in post at Feethams until 1968.
He then served Middlesbrough as trainer during Jack
Charlton's time on Teesside, before scouting in the region
for a variety of clubs including the mackems.
Jimmy was sadly diagnosed with Alzheimers during 2005 and
lived in a Darlington care home. He passed away in August
2013, less than a week after his 90th birthday.
A charity 5-a-side football tournament named after
Greenhalgh was inaugurated during 2013 as a fundraising
platform to support those
living with the disease.
1979 Marlon Harewood born, Hampstead,
London. (2009)

Arriving at Gallowgate on loan from Aston Villa
in September 2009, striker Harewood made his Magpies debut
as a substitute in a 4-0 victory at Ipswich Town.
Signed to provide striking cover following confirmation
that Shola Ameobi's foot injury would sideline him for
some time, Marlon scored in our next game, at home to QPR.
Beginning his career with Nottingham Forest's Academy,
Harewood had made his first team debut in 1998 and
featured in a 0-2 defeat on Tyneside that October.
Loan spells at Finnish side FC Haka and Ipswich Town came
before he established himself in Forest's side - helping
them into the Championship playoffs in 2003, only to then
lose at the semi-final stage.
Rejecting a new deal at the City Ground, Harewood joined
West Ham in a £500K deal in November 2003 - scoring from
the spot against Newcastle in December 2005 - the day that
Michael Owen's hat trick helped the Magpies to a 4-2 win
in East London.
United's return to the Boleyn Ground in September 2006 saw
Harewood collide accidentally with Shay Given, leaving the
Newcastle 'keeper with a perforated bowel.
A rumoured Toon transfer target in 2006, those rumours
then resurfaced in January 2007, days before he scored for
the Hammers during a 2-2 draw at SJP.
July 2007 saw him swap one set of claret and blue for
another, joining Aston Villa at a cost of £4m. However he
was to make just one Premier League start, being cast
instead in the role of perennial substitute.
By March 2009 Marlon had been persuaded to drop into the
Championship with a loan move to Wolves - although he
failed to find the net in five appearances for the Molineux club.
His arrival on Tyneside wasn't universally welcomed
and a lack of match fitness saw him poorly-received by
some Toon fans - especially during successive away defeats
at Forest and Scunthorpe.
He did improve though and in the final month of his three
month stint managed to score four goals; two against
Swansea and one against the smoggies at SJP and a fine volley at Barnsley.
Returning to Villa after the Boxing Day draw at Sheffield
Wednesday, there was some speculation of a permanent
move to Tyneside.
However a broken bone in his foot sustained while training
with Villa reserves put paid to that and Chris Hughton
turned instead to Coventry City striker Leon Best.
A free agent that summer, Marlon was linked with
a move to Rangers but joined Blackpool for pre-season
training before signing a two year deal with the
Tangerines.
He enjoyed a
spectacular debut, scoring twice in a 4-0 win at Wigan in
Blackpool's first ever Premier League game.
However, Harewood soon fell out of favour and
after a spell on loan at Barnsley was released in 2011,
turning up unexpectedly at Chinese side Guangzhou.
Spells at Nottingham
Forest, Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday (trial), Millwall
(trial),
Bristol City and Hartlepool United followed, before a
move to Conference North side Nuneaton Town.
He subsequently became involved with a prestige car sales
business with footballers including Andy Carroll among his
clients.

The mackem monsoon game. Ruud Gullit
famously left Alan Shearer on the bench and then blamed
the defeat on him and fellow striker Duncan Ferguson,
prompting one reporter to say "less of a teamsheet,
more of a suicide note".
Dunc expressed his disappointment with Gullit's
comments the next morning at the club's training ground, ripping the manager's office
door off its hinges....
Within days Gullit had abdicated, Shearer and Rob Lee were back
in the fold and Bobby Robson had been installed at
Gallowgate. A revitalised number then plundered five goals
as Sheffield Wednesday were demolished 8-0.
Had referee Graham Poll not opted to play on through
atrocious conditions and messrs Quinn and Philips not
beaten loan 'keeper Tommy Wright though, the
course of Magpie history could have been very
different - no Bobby, no Shearer scoring record etc.

Another fantastic night of entertainment dished up

Not only had our season started badly on the pitch but
off it our very public bidding in the auction for

2006 The
draw for the First Round Proper of the UEFA Cup was made and
Newcastle's reward for beating Latvians, FK Ventspils, was a trip to
the neighbouring Baltic state of Estonia, to face Levadia
Tallinn.

2007 Alleged
striker Abert Luque left United for Ajax, turning
down offers from their Eredivisie rivals Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven
and Spaniards Real Betis.
The Spanish misfit had cost United £11.4m (not the £9.5m
publicly quoted) from Deportivo La Coruna in August 2005
but we recouped only part of that fee (the amount
wasn't disclosed).
Fourteen starts and twenty appearances as a substitute in all
competitions harvested three goals - a rotten record but
still superior to his replacement, Alan Smith.
Reflecting on his time at Newcastle, Luque told Dutch
pressmen that:
"I got an offer I could not refuse, simple. I had
a conversation with chairman Freddy Shepherd and he asked
me what I wanted to earn. I called a ridiculous amount and
he immediately said it was okay.
"A day later he spoke with Deportivo and in that
interview exact same thing happened. He asked what I had
cost, Lendoiro said fifteen million and the deal was done.
In both cases, they didn't even try to negotiate, Shepherd
said twice immediately yes.
"In 24 hours changed my life, everything was upside
down. I was going to earn a lot at a club which I had
never followed, in a city where I knew nothing of.
"Most of the players who were under contract at
Newcastle I had never heard of and I spoke barely a word
of English!"
