2025/26:
Target on target

Following widespread reports of an unsuccessful bid in the region of £50m from Newcastle, striker Jorgen Strand Larsen came off the bench to net a quick-fire brace for his current club Wolves in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

The 25 year-old Norwegian international scored twice in three minutes to turn a 1-2 deficit into a 3-2 advantage against West Ham at Molineux.

Asked about Larsen's future following the victory, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira simply said, "I don't know, I'm not the owner."

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, there was no sign of Yoane Wissa as Brentford made it to the Third Round of the Carabao Cup after winning 2-0 at Bournemouth.

The transfer window closes at 7pm on Monday.

U18s:
Foxes fettled

Newcastle U18s  3  Leicester City U18s  2

It's now three wins out of three for Newcastle U18s, who followed up back-to-back league victories with success in their opening Premier League Cup tie on Tuesday.

Coach Chris Moore gave a debut to Isaac Moran following his arrival from Liverpool and the black and whites led at half time thanks to
Sam Pinnington's 32nd minute shot.

City almost equalised straight after the break when Alpha Diallo headed against the post before an emphatic finish from Alex O'Donovan doubled the lead, hammering a shot home off the underside of the bar in the 57th minute.

That prompted the visitors into a double switch that quickly boosted their attacking threat and they reduced the arrears 10 minutes later - the referee's assistant confirming that Lorenz Hutchinson's header had crossed the line despite the claims of home 'keeper George Mair.

United's two goal lead was restored on 71 minutes when the ball was nodded down for Mohammed Waddani to hook in from close range for his second goal of the season.

Luqman Aideed's finish at the far post then made it 3-2 to United with five minutes of normal time left, heralding a frantic finale that was memorable for the wrong reasons.

City's Diallo lashed out at United's Oliver Goodbrand near to the corner flag and the mass confrontation followed ended with coaches from both sides intervening to separate warring players.

Referee Stephen Beresford red-carded Foxes pair Diallo and David Anugo, while two home players were cautioned.

Goodbrand was led away on a stretcher with his left forearm strapped up before the game belatedly restarted and the final seconds were played out, before full time sounded on a second half that had been extended to 61 minutes.

Team: Mair, Patterson, Morgan, Johnson, Moran (Old 46), Alabi, Pinnington (E.Ndiweni 75), Lucas, Wooster (Goodbrand 71), O'Donovan (Hutchison 71), Waddani.
Sub n/u: Holland.

Booked: Wooster, Alabi, Goodbrand, (Holland).

2025/26:
Carabao Cup
draw
- Wednesday

Newcastle will discover their Carabao Cup Third Round opponents on Wednesday night, when the draw takes place ahead of the Grimsby Town versus Manchester United Second Round tie, live on Sky and ITV1.

That's an 8pm KO, with transmission starting at 7.30pm.

Third Round ties will be played across two consecutive midweeks (w/c September 15th and w/c September 22nd).

The Magpies will be Champions League action in the first of those weeks meaning that they'll begin their Carabao Cup defence in the second.

Sides in the Europa League will play in that competition during the second week, meaning that their Carabao Cup tie will be staged in the first week - and those clubs cannot be drawn against a Champions League side, ie ourselves.

Premier League:
Manic Monday

Newcastle  2  Liverpool  3

A game that had threatened to be overshadowed by the saga of Alexander Isak in the end served up enough incident and drama to banish thoughts of the absent striker - at least for 102 manic minutes at Gallowgate on Monday.

Sadly for Newcastle though, a gargantuan effort that saw them recover from falling 0-2 behind and going down to ten men left them empty-handed after a 16 year-old debutant scored the winning goal deep into second half added time.

And in addition to an unwanted suspension headache, Eddie Howe was landed with three injury issues to contend with as the clock ticks down towards the end of a bewildering and brutal transfer window.

Backed by unwavering home support, an unchanged United side from that which had taken a point from their opening game at Aston Villa mounted a superhuman effort to press back the reigning champions in their own half.

For all their effort and endeavour though, Allison in the Liverpool goal was barely tested before the visitors went ahead on 35 minutes; Ryan Gravenberch firing a low shot from distance that took a slight deflection off Fabian Schar that left Nick Pope flat-footed in the Gallowgate End goal.

Worse was to come in first half added time, when Anthony Gordon's manic dash across the Liverpool backline in an attempt to retrieve possession ended with him clattering into Virgil van Dijk and seeing red after a pitchside VAR review.

That may have provoked negative chanting from some home fans, but like Gordon's red card transgression last season against Brighton in the FA Cup, this was needless, indefensible and brainless given our striker shortage.

When former Toon transfer target Hugo Ekitike powered home his third goal in as many games just 20 seconds after the interval the game looked over as a contest - only for Bruno Guimaraes to throw himself at Tino Livramento's left wing cross and head home to halve the deficit.

That came just before the hour mark, but while the goal roused the crowd again, United's hopes of continuing their revival received a treble blow when Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and Fabian Schar were all forced off due to injuries.

The introduction of five replacements brought maiden outings for both Malick Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey, but it was substitute William Osula who conjured up an improbable leveller after following in Pope's long kick upfield with just two minutes of normal time remaining.

An additional 11 minutes were added (mostly caused by Liverpool time-wasting) as the hosts attempted to seal the most incredible comeback against a Reds side who never held the initiative despite their numerical advantage.

Sadly though, in much the same way that Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler had broken United hearts in those two 4-3 games at Anfield, the extra time agony came from 16 year-old Rio Ngumoha, who took less than five minutes of his senior debut to fire home from inside the box after Dominik Szoboszlai dummied Mo Salah's centre from the right.

Despite the selection issues, the spirit and endeavour that brought us Wembley success against this opponent last time out was channelled again here tonight - and against the odds, it almost worked.

Luck of judgment may have deserted us at crucial times tonight, but there was no lack of collective effort and an incredible amount of energy was expended in what ended up as a fruitless pursuit. The Isak absence may be affecting us statistically but not mentally.

If not for the Gordon stupidity, this would have been categorised as glorious failure. Sadly though, the hangover threatens to impact on our next set of games, even without the transfer window madness. It's never dull round here.

Team: Pope, Trippier (Hall 76), Livramento, Burn, Schar (Thiaw 81), Joelinton (Ramsey 76), Tonali (L.Miley 66), Guimaraes, Elanga, Barnes (Osula 76), Gordon.
Subs n/u: Botman, J.Murphy, Ramsdale, Willock.

Goals: Guimaraes 57, Osula 88

Booked: Burn, Guimaraes

Sent off: Gordon (straight red 45+3)

LFC: Allison, Szoboszlai, Kerkez, Jones (Elliott 90+6), van Dijk, Konate, Gravenberch, Gakpo (Ngumoha 90+6), Wirtz (Bradley 80), Salah (Endo 90+12), Ekitike (Chiesa 80).
Subs n/u: Gomez, Leoni, Mamardashvili, Robertson.

Booked: Gravenberch, Konate, Bradley

Goals:
Gravenberch 35, Ekitike 46, Ngumoha 90+10

Crowd: 52,230 including 3,000 travelling fans.

Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan was in attendance.

Eddie Howe:

"A bruising game for us with so many different emotions.

"I'm really proud of the performance, really pleased with how we played, great energy, great intensity, really pleased with the following of the game plan and then adapting because we go to 10 men and for me we're the better team in the second half as well as the first.

"It's a really tough night for us from a number of fronts. Really painful one for us. I think we deserved something from the game.

"We get no points, we get injuries. Joelinton and
(Sandro) Tonali don't look good. (Anthony) Gordon will be suspended and Fabian (Schar) was concussed.

"We had a mountain to climb at 2-0 down and 10 men. We fought unbelievably well to come back. Of course you’re frustrated when you deserve to get points.

"I'm pretty down. It's very difficult to disguise your emotions after that. I'm proud of the players and the effort they've given. Two very different halves - going two down is a mountain to climb when you have a man less but they somehow found a way back in."

On Anthony Gordon’s red card:

"I've only seen it once back and it was very quick as the game was going on. I think Anthony was going in full blooded into the challenge and he's tried to pull out and slipped and his momentums taken him in. It didn't look good but I don't think there was any intent."

"Of course he wants it a lot but he’s gone in for a tackle at an awkward angle...there was no intention or malice to hurt Virgil van Dijk.”

On a possible return for Alexander Isak:

"I’ve got no idea on that. I’ve been here. Certainly far from ideal to lose a forward option but great to see Will Osula come on and score tonight.”

On Osula's goal:

"It was a great finish from him and a big moment for us because at that moment you think could we go on and win the game.

"We put a lot of set plays into their box, we asked a lot of questions of them defensively but you always feel in that moment, especially with 11 minutes of injury time there's always going to be chances for both teams and unfortunately, they took two of theirs in that second half."

On the Liverpool winner:

"It's a great finish from their perspective. We'd be disappointed with how we conceded that, even though we had a man less."

On transfers:

"Hopeful and I know we'll keep going right to the end of the window. I think that's probably the best way of putting it."

Referee: Simon Hooper - a first appointment involving Newcastle for the Wiltshire whistler since the 0-1 PL reverse at Arsenal back in May.

Hooper's last sighting at SJP was for the 2-0 Carabao Cup second leg success against the Gunners and tonight was his first PL appearance at Gallowgate since the 4-1 home win over Chelsea in November 2023.

Stats:

There were Premier League debuts for Jacob Ramsey and Malick Thiaw, taking the number of players to represent Newcastle in that competition up to 272.

Bruno Guimaraes
netted his 22nd PL goal for Newcastle, taking him level with fellow countryman Joelinton and SJP old boy Laurent Robert.

William Osula
registered his second PL strike as a Magpie, like his first that has come against Ipswich Town last season, it came at the Gallowgate End.

This is the second time that a Brazilian and a Dane have scored against Liverpool at SJP for United, following an equally mad game in February 1989 when Mirandinha and Frank Pingel were both on target in a 2-2 draw.

Anthony Gordon
was dismissed for the third time as a United player, having previously seen red during the 4-3 home PL win over West Ham in March 2024 and the 1-2 home FA Cup loss to Brighton in March 2025.

This transgression is set to see him miss PL games away to Leeds, at home to Wolves and away to Bournemouth.

Tyler Jones
(Ashington):

An emergency loan deal saw the 17 year-old custodian heading to Northern Premier League Division One East side for a month.

Aidan Harris (Coleraine):
Aidan played the full game for Coleraine at Glenavon in the Northern Irish Premiership on Saturday and they won 2-1 thanks to a late winner that followed a Glenavon red card.

Antonio Cordero (KVC Westerlo):

Two in two for Toon

Wolves U18s  0  Newcastle U18s  2

There was a debut from the bench for Alfie Seldon and the 15 year-old crossed soon after his arrival for Alfie Hutchison to head home his first goal since arriving from Rangers.

That gave United a 69th minute advantage and Sam Alabi's 89th minute penalty conversion in the 89th minute ensured that Chris Moore's side triumphed in the Black County.

Update: No confirmation of Targett's loan to Boro had appeared by Tuesday evening.

Sky Sports
reported on Friday that Newcastle were set to conclude a loan deal sending full back Matt Target to Boro for the remainder of the season.

The 29 year-old is in the last year of his contract at SJP and hasn't started a Premier League game for the Magpies since September 2023.

Targett has made 47 senior competitive appearances since arriving on loan from Aston Villa during January 2022. That loan became a permanent switch ahead of the next season at a claimed cost of £15m.

The deal taking him to Teesside wasn't concluded in time for him to feature in last Saturday's Champonship visit to Norwich City.

Isak timeline

Sun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Sun 18.05
Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than surgery was forecast.

Sun 25.05
Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.

Tue 27.05
Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to a minor injury, presumably groin.

Mon 14.07
Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for a week-long training camp.

Tue 15.07
The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.

Sat 19.07
Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming tour of Asia.

Mon 21.07
Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park but reportedly cut short the session.

(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)

Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.

Wed 23.07
Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace) Isak.

Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club".

The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial status.

Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would remain a Newcastle player.

Sun 27.07
Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.

Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.

Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak and he remained a Magpie.

Wed 30.07 Spanish media claimed that Isak was training alone in San Sebastian.

Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.

Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train separately from the rest of the senior squad.

Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol, Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.

Sat 16.08 Isak wasn't involved in the Premier League season opener at Aston Villa, with travelling supporters airing "one greedy bastard" chants after full time.

Tue 19.08 Isak released a statement explaining his absence from the PFA awards ceremony, which included this:

"The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading."

Tue 19.08 NUFC released their own statement.

On This Day in History
26th August

Born Or Died:

1884 William Hampson born, Radcliffe, Manchester. (1914-27)

Defender signed from Norwich City who featured for the Magpies before and after the break in league football due to WW1.

Part of Newcastle's 1924 FA Cup winning side, Billy made two appearances in the title- winning season of 1926/27, later moving on to South Shields.

A managerial career began at Carlisle in 1930, with a later stint in charge of Ashington before serving 12 years at Leeds United up to 1947 - after which Hampson was appointed their chief scout.

Billy died in Congleton, Cheshire in 1966.

1893 George Pyke born, Gateshead.
(1913-22)

Centre forward signed by Newcastle for the princely sum of £20 from Rutherford College in the city.

Joining the 17th Service (Football) Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment, George saw action at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, resuming his playing career thereafter.

Making his first team debut in 1919, he failed to find the net in three games that season, but scored twice in a 3-0 victory at Sheffield United in his first outing of the next season.

Only one more goal followed though, as he failed to dislodge Neil Harris from the number nine shirt and moved on to Blyth Spartans ahead of the 1922/23 season.

George passed away in March 1977 at the age of 83.

1910 Thomas Wilfred Feeney born, Grangetown, Middlesbrough. (1930-32)

Inside left who was playing for Whitby United when Newcastle signed him as cover midway through the 1930/31 season.

Making his debut in a 2-2 home draw with West Ham in January 1932, Feeney's only toon goal was in a 1-2 loss at hometown club Middlesbrough the following month.

Joining Notts County in the summer of 1932, Wilf later played for Lincoln City, Stockport County, Halifax and Chester, ending his playing career in 1939 at Darlington.

Feeney died in 1973 on Teesside.

1938 Bryan Harvey born, Stepney.
(1958-61)

Goalkeeper signed from Wisbech Town and given his chance within a month of signing, in place of Stewart Mitchell - who himself was deputising for Newcastle's first-choice custodian Ronnie Simpson.

Debuting in a 3-1 home win over Wolves, Bryan retained his place in the side until the closing weeks of the 1960/61 season, when new signing Dave Hollins took over but couldn't prevent relegation.

Bryan moved on and signed for Cambridge City before returning to league football with Blackpool and later, Northampton Town.

Saving six penalties in season 1964/65 (two in the same game) Harvey helped the Cobblers gain promotion to Division One, along with Newcastle.

Later struggling with injury (breaking two fingers), Harvey exited the County Ground in 1968 in favour of Kettering Town.

Bryan worked at a chemical factory after ending his playing days and remained living in Northampton. He died in April 2006.

Newcastle failed to beat Pompey for the fourth time at Gallowgate in as many seasons, but clawed back a 0-2 interval deficit in heatwave conditions.

1933 United's reserve side had a harsh introduction to the Central League, losing 0-4 at Derby County in what was their very first fixture in that competition.

Former Magpie reserve Ossie Bowden gave the Rams a half time lead before Fabian, Hague and Randall also netted - NUFC old boy Ralph Hann also in the home lineup.

Previous to this, the club's second string had competed in regional competitions such as the North Eastern League.

The third-ever meeting of the Lions and the Magpies followed two draws the previous season. An early knee injury to United's Duggie Wright would cost them dear.

This would be the first of only three games played in the 1939/40 season, after which league football was cancelled due to a rather bigger European fixture.

Following a 1-5 home defeat by Spurs on opening day, things again looked bleak for United when they trailed 0-3 before the interval.

And although they recovered to achieve a modicum of respectability at St. Andrew's, the destination of the two points was never really in doubt.

1961 Preston North End (a) 1-0 (1-0)
Division Two
P3, 5pts, 3rd/22

Early strikes from Ian Gibson and Arthur Kaye accounted for a Newcastle side accused of over-confidence at Ayresome Park, having beaten Derby County 3-1 48 hours before.

At Leeds Road meanwhile, Newcastle lost 1-2 to Huddersfield Town in the Central League - the Magpies goal coming from Hungarian winger Josef Nagy on his debut.

The late show, Highfield Road style as Terry Gibson's effort for the Sky Blues provoked George Reilly into an equaliser, before Ian Stewart found a late winner.

The West Midlands Constabulary were in fine form, ejecting numerous travelling fans for the heinous crime of not wearing shirts.

Alan Shearer made his comeback from injury as a second half sub on a day when Peter Reid's side somehow escaped with a point, despite being almost totally outplayed.

The chief culprit for United was Nolberto Solano, who missed four noteworthy opportunities.

2003 It was a case of red shirts and red faces for the reserves, who wore an unfamiliar red and black combination for a 1-3 loss at Hartlepool United in the Pontins League.

Made up of away shorts and socks plus the home side's away top, this was at the request of the referee, with the officials clad in black - the same colour as Newcastle's change kit.

David Foley and Jermaine Easter (2) netted before Carl Cort got one back for a Magpies side including Clarence Acuna.
NUFC.com match report

2004 A young United reserve side hit double figures in a pre-season friendly against West Allotment Celtic, scoring five in both halves.

Kris Gate, Lewis Guy (2), Martin Brittain and Guy Bates netted before the interval. Guy grabbing three more in the second half, along with Danny Howe and Darryl Smylie goals.

2005 Albert Luque Martos became a Magpie, as the club took their summer transfer spending over the £20m mark.

The Barcelona-born 27 year-old signed a five year deal for a reported fee of around £9.5m, - that was actually an incredible £11.4m.

Two years later and the Spaniard slunk out of the backdoor to Ajax for next to nothing - a damning indictment of our transfer policy during the reign of Graeme Souness.

Sam Allardyce's Magpies preserved their unbeaten start to the season but were twice pegged back and lost Stephen Carr to injury within five minutes.

Fellow defender Peter Ramage then limped off after the interval, on a day when owner Mike Ashley appeared for the first time clad in a black and white shirt - in the Directors box.

The scorer of Boro's opener also received some barracking from the away fans, which gave certain journalists ammunition to label them as "Islamophobic" and urge anyone who would listen that "something must be done."

A debut for Sebastien Bassong and a first outing to the Ricoh Arena ended with Michael Owen's extra-time winner - although storm clouds were beginning to gather...

United's first two goals looked like own goals but were credited to two Magpies who would be on their way.

N'Zogbia would leave for Wigan in the January 2009 transfer window, citing JFK's infamous "insomnia" mispronunciation of his name as the final straw.

The departure of Milner to Aston Villa was rather more rapid, with Martin O'Neill in the stands watching the winger in what proved to be his final game in a Newcastle shirt.

United boss Kevin Keegan was advised after the final whistle that Villa's £12m offer had been accepted - conducting post-match interviews with a disconsolate expression on his face. Within a week he himself had gone.

2011 QPR concluded the free transfer signing of United midfielder Joey Barton on a four year deal.
