2025/26:
Bantams in Toon

Newcastle begin the defence of their Carabao Cup title with a Third Round home tie against League One Bradford City.

Third Round ties will be played across two consecutive midweeks (w/c September 15th and w/c September 22nd).

The Magpies are in Champions League action during the first of those weeks, meaning that their Carabao Cup tie will be played on or around September 23rd or 24th.

That falls between the Premier League visit to Bournemouth and home meeting against Arsenal.

Season ticket holders who signed up for the Carabao Cup home ticket scheme will be charged £20 and £25 depending on their seating area. Payment will be taken within seven days of the fixture date confirmation.

Graham Alexander's side reached the Third Round thanks to a 2-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers and a 3-0 success at fellow Championship side Stoke City.

The Bantams currently sit fourth in League One, with three wins and two draws from their opening five EFL fixtures.

This is the fourth time that the two sides have been paired in this competition, the most recent meeting a 4-3 Third Round victory at Gallowgate for Newcastle in 2000.

The Magpies lost a two-legged tie in the 1986/87 season - beaten 0-2 at Odsal and winning 1-0 at SJP but got the better of Bradford in 1984/85, following up a 3-1 victory on Tyneside with a 1-0 success at Valley Parade.

Latest:
JSL: deal now close

Latest: A further bid of £55m for Jorgen Strand Larsen was made by Newcastle and rejected late on Tuesday, but it now appears that agreement is set to be reached on a fee for the Wolves centre forward - more to follow....

Earlier: Following widespread reports of an unsuccessful bid in the region of £50m from Newcastle, Larsen came off the bench to net a quick-fire brace for his current club Wolves in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

The 25 year-old Norwegian international scored twice in three minutes to turn a 1-2 deficit into a 3-2 advantage against West Ham at Molineux - his first goals since the season-long loan deal that brought him from Celta Vigo during July 2024 became permanent at a cost of £26m.

Asked about Larsen's future following the victory, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira simply said, "I don't know, I'm not the owner."

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, there was no sign of Yoane Wissa as Brentford made it to the Third Round of the Carabao Cup after winning 2-0 at Bournemouth.

The transfer window closes at 7pm on Monday.

Update:

Update:
U21 Coach appointed

From NUFC, Wednesday:

Newcastle United will appoint Adam Lawrence as the club's new Under-21s Lead Coach on 1st September.

The 38-year-old will join the Magpies' Academy following his departure from Manchester United, where he was Lead Coach for the club's Under-18s side.

During his tenure, Lawrence led his Under-18s team to three pieces of silverware in the 2023/24 campaign, winning the Premier League regional and national titles as well as the Premier League Cup.

Last season, Lawrence guided his side to second in the Premier League North, while they narrowly missed out on reaching the FA Youth Cup final after losing to eventual winners Aston Villa in the semi-finals on penalties.

Alongside his role as Under-18s Lead Coach, Lawrence also held the role of Head of Player Development (U13-U16), where he was tasked with ensuring a smooth transition for players as they began their scholarships.

Prior to joining Manchester United, Lawrence spent eight years at Charlton Athletic's Academy, where he served as the club's Head of Coaching, as well as working within Millwall's youth system.

He will be assisted by Robbie Stockdale, who has been in interim charge of the Under-21s side since the departure of Diarmuid O'Carroll.

Restocked for the new season is the Shearer bucket hat from Football Bobbles, with the 1996/97 change kit colours on one side and black & white on the reverse.

These are available to purchase here in three sizes.

The Tyneside-based company also has a brand-new range of bespoke T-shirts depicting the life and times of Newcastle's 50s hero and FA Cup winner George Robledo.

These are available to purchase here in a bewildering variety of sizes and colours.

The prize in our latest competition was a Shearer bucket hat or a Robledo T-shirt and to stand a chance of winning we asked which former Magpie played for Liverpool the last time we won a PL game against them in 2015.

It was of course James Milner and the winning entry came from Peter Cowell.

U18s:
Foxes fettled

Newcastle U18s  3  Leicester City U18s  2

It's now three wins out of three for Newcastle U18s, who followed up back-to-back league victories with success in their opening Premier League Cup tie on Tuesday.

Coach Chris Moore gave a debut to Isaac Moran following his arrival from Liverpool and the black and whites led at half time thanks to
Sam Pinnington's 32nd minute shot.

City almost equalised straight after the break when Alpha Diallo headed against the post before an emphatic finish from Alex O'Donovan doubled the lead, hammering a shot home off the underside of the bar in the 57th minute.

That prompted the visitors into a double switch that quickly boosted their attacking threat and they reduced the arrears 10 minutes later - the referee's assistant confirming that Lorenz Hutchinson's header had crossed the line despite the claims of home 'keeper George Mair.

United's two goal lead was restored on 71 minutes when the ball was nodded down for Mohammed Waddani to hook in from close range for his second goal of the season.

Luqman Aideed's finish at the far post then made it 3-2 to United with five minutes of normal time left, heralding a frantic finale that was memorable for the wrong reasons.

A mass confrontation near to United corner flag following a foul ended with match officials and coaches from both sides intervening to separate warring players.

Referee Stephen Beresford red-carded Foxes pair Diallo and David Anugo, while two home players were cautioned.

United's Noel Morgan left on a stretcher with his left forearm strapped up before the game belatedly restarted and the final seconds were played before a second half that had been extended to 61 minutes was concluded.

Team: Mair, Patterson, Morgan, Johnson, Moran (Old 46), Alabi, Pinnington (E.Ndiweni 75), Lucas, Wooster (Goodbrand 71), O'Donovan (Hutchison 71), Waddani.
Sub n/u: Holland.

Booked: Wooster, Alabi, Goodbrand, (Holland).

PS: Newcastle's U18 league home game against Leeds United this Saturday (30th) has been switched and now takes place away at Thorp Arch. Kick-off remains Noon.

The other meeting of two sides will now be staged on Tyneside in January 2026.

Matt finish confirmed

Newcastle have now concluded a loan deal sending full back Matt Target to Boro for the remainder of the season.

The 29 year-old was in the last year of his contract at SJP and hadn't started a Premier League game for the Magpies since September 2023.

Targett made 47 senior competitive appearances since arriving on loan from Aston Villa during January 2022. That loan became a permanent switch ahead of the 2022/23 campaign at a claimed cost of £15m.

He's in line to make his Boro bow when they host Sheffield United in the Championship this coming Saturday.

Tyler Jones
(Ashington):

An emergency loan deal saw the 17 year-old custodian heading to Northern Premier League Division One East side for a month.

Joe White (Leyton Orient):

The midfielder was named on the bench for Saturday's League One visit to Mansfield Town. He came on in the 70th minute when the O's trailed 1-3 and it ended 1-4.

Aidan Harris (Coleraine):
Aidan played the full game for Coleraine at Glenavon in the Northern Irish Premiership on Saturday and they won 2-1 thanks to a late winner that followed a Glenavon red card.

Antonio Cordero (KVC Westerlo):

The Belgian side weren't in Pro League action this weekend after their game with Club Brugge was postponed due to the opposition having a European qualification playoff.

Meltdown:
Isak timeline

Helping them achieve promotion to the top flight in his second season, talk of interest frSun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Sun 18.05
Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than surgery was forecast.

Sun 25.05
Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.

Tue 27.05
Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to a minor injury, presumably groin.

Mon 14.07
Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for a week-long training camp.

Tue 15.07
The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.

Sat 19.07
Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming tour of Asia.

Mon 21.07
Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park but reportedly cut short the session.

(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)

Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.

Wed 23.07
Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace) Isak.

Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club".

The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial status.

Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would remain a Newcastle player.

Sun 27.07
Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.

Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.

Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak and he remained a Magpie.

Wed 30.07 Spanish media claimed that Isak was training alone in San Sebastian.

Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.

Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train separately from the rest of the senior squad.

Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol, Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.

Sat 16.08 Isak wasn't involved in the Premier League season opener at Aston Villa, with travelling supporters airing "one greedy bastard" chants after full time.

Tue 19.08 Isak released a statement explaining his absence from the PFA awards ceremony, which included this:

"The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading."

Tue 19.08 NUFC released their own statement.

On This Day in History
27th August

Born Or Died:

1895 John Archibald born, Strathaven, Scotland. (1922-23)

Goalkeeper "Jock" made just one senior appearance for the Magpies, in a 5-1 home victory against Manchester City in April 1922.

Beginning his career with Albion Rovers just before the outbreak of World War I, Archibald signed for Southern League Reading in 1919 following his Army discharge.

Despite reportedly lacking a right thumb, he impressed and was soon in the first team. However what was termed "misbehaviour" with a team mate on the train returning from a cup match at Plymouth in January 1920 saw his Reading career halted.

Joining Chelsea, he failed to play a senior competitive game before returning to Scotland a year later with St Bernard’s.

Newcastle then acquired John as cover for Bill Bradley and he took over from him for one game.

A move to Grimsby Town followed in May 1923, where he finally became a regular starter and helped them to the Third Division (North) Championship in 1926.

Later spells took him on to Darlington, Albion Rovers once again, Airdrieonians and East Stirlingshire - hanging up his gloves at the latter during 1929.

1938 Death of Colin Veitch, 57.

1973 Dietmar Hamann born, Waldsasson, Germany (1998-99)

Newcastle paid Bayern Munich £4.5m for their German international midfielder ahead of the 1998/99 season (his last game for them being the German Cup Final).

Scoring in pre-season games at Bray and against Juventus at SJP, Didi debuted in the season-opener against Charlton Athletic - after which manager Kenny Dalglish exited, to be replaced by Ruud Gullit.

Making a favourable impression in what was an inconsistent team, Hamann netted five goals including a thunderbolt at Nottingham Forest and helped United reach the FA Cup Final for the second successive season.

However they lost 0-2 at Wembley to Manchester United, Hamann failing to take to the field for the second half after what was claimed to be a dressing room spat.

That proved to be his last game for the club and an £8m switch to Liverpool was soon agreed - just days after going on the record to express his love of life on Tyneside.

Later claims that he was unhappy at the switch of manager from Dalglish to Gullit didn't really wash with Magpies fans, given that he played precisely two competitive games for the Scotsman.

Toon fans would deliver their own verdict on Hamann in subsequent appearances against them, directing repeated choruses of "There's only one greedy b*st*rd."

At Anfield he enjoyed trophy success and ended Kevin Keegan's career as England boss, scoring in Germany's 1-0 win in the final game at the "old" Wembley, prompting KK to resign after the final whistle

Having played his last game for the Reds was the FA Cup Final, July 2006 saw Didi involved in a farcical transfer when joining Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer.

Within hours though he'd had a change of heart and admitted to a preference for Manchester City, managed by former Newcastle team mate Stuart Pearce.

With his registration not completed. Sam Allardyce's Trotters duly allowed him to move - in return for £400K compensation - while the player infuriated Wanderers officials by saying Bolton was too far to travel from his home - on the Wirral.

Following his release from City in 2009, Hamann was out of football for a year before taking up a player/coach role at MK Dons. A faker at a fake club, that's fitting.

July 2011 then saw him on the move again, taking over as Stockport County manager following their demotion to the Conference.

However, by November Hamann had gone following a failed takeover. He switched to punditry work and became an online tipster - despite admitting to a gambling addiction that once saw him lose £288K while spread betting on cricket.

A hugely enjoyable twitter fallout with fellow ex-Magpie and former Manchester City colleague Joey Barton came in 2013, with both men delighting in dredging up various "misadventures" in the other's life.

1977 Stuart Elliott born, Willesden, London.
(1993-2000)

Released by Arsenal as a teenager in 1993, Stuart's father Bob - a Gunners scout - was instrumental in him moving to United and signing a two year YTS deal.

Graduating from the juniors to the reserves, Elliott initially appeared in defence but was also deployed in a midfield role.

Taking on penalty duties for the second string in 1994/95 helped him register eight goals and Stuart was in the senior squad for the following pre-season (appearing against Hartlepool, Rushden and Gateshead).

He then returned to the reserves for the remainder of that campaign, but saw his playing opportunities diminish when United withdrew from the Central League in 1996.

Named as an unused substitute away to Southampton in January 1997 by incoming manager Kenny Dalglish, Elliott left SJP the following month, joining Hull City on loan - only to be dismissed on his debut.

Marking his 20th birthday on the bench for Newcastle's Champions League qualification success in Zagreb, the next in a seemingly endless series of loans over the following three seasons took him to Swindon Town.

Later stops would include Dundee, Gillingham, Hartlepool United, Wrexham, Bournemouth and Stockport County.

Released by United in May 2000, Stuart bowed out with a long-range strike in the Northumberland Senior Cup Final against Blue Star before signing for Darlington.

Within months, he'd broken his senior team scoring duck in spectacular style, beating Dave Beasant from 45 yards in a League Cup tie at Nottingham Forest.

After leaving the Quakers in 2001, he moved on to Plymouth Argyle, Scunthorpe (trial), Scarborough (trial), Carlisle, Durham, Scarborough, Exeter, Kidderminster (trial), Durham, Merthyr Tydfil, Harrogate Town, Halifax, Harrow Borough & Waltham Forest.

While playing for Gateshead in 2005, Elliott also made a part-time return to Newcastle United, coaching at the Academy.

Further moves saw him appear for Northwich Victoria, York City and Grays Athletic, before an abortive return to Durham City in 2009 when he played just once before the club encountered severe financial problems and were forced to release their squad.

Stu later signed for Northern League sides Bedlington Terriers and Newcastle Benfield, managing the latter in conjunction with his former SJP colleague Paul Brayson.

More recently he combined coaching at Walker Riverside Academy with his role at Newcastle United's Academy.

1989 Dean Critchlow born, North Shields.
(2005-07)

Academy midfielder who attended Whitley Bay High School and featured for United's junior and reserve sides before his release.

Joining Newcastle Blue Star, Dean faced his former employers in a pre-season friendly at Kingston Park in 2007 and later moved on to Northern League outfit Washington.

Critchlow's next club was Northern League Team Northumbria, playing while studying for a Sports Development Degree and graduating in 2011.

Becoming a United Foundation coach whilst playing on for TN, Dean featured in a 4-4 draw against Newcastle reserves in the Northumberland Senior Cup final at SJP in 2012, his TN side losing on penalties.

June 2014 then saw him join fellow Northern League side Ashington before emigrating to Australia to live on the Gold Coast, playing for Magic United.

Remaining in that area, Dean later became Director of Coaching at Tamborine Mountain Eagles.

1989 Romain Amalfitano born Nice, France. (2012-14)

Winger who joined Chateuaroux as a youngster. but failed to break into their senior side before departing in 2009.

Joining French third tier outfit Evian on a one year deal, 23 appearances and three goals the following season persuaded Stade Reims to hand him a two year contract.

Helping them achieve promotion to the top flight in his second season, talk of interest from Newcastle emerged early in 2012, as the player opened discussions with other clubs in the final six months of his deal.

That coincided with Amalfitano dropping out of the Reims side, apparently due to injury - although for a time he was never referred to at all by their official website - prompting speculation of a possible fallout.

By April 2012 a deal was apparently in place between United and Romain, played the last six games of the season before officially becoming a Magpie on July 1st.

A first taste of action came in a 0-1 loss at German side Chemntizer during pre-season, before netting in a penalty shootout against Olympiakos in Faro later that month.

Debuting competitively as a substitute in the 1-1 Europa League draw at Greek side Atromitos, four more low-key appearances came in that competition totalling 148 minutes (his sole start was in the 0-0 draw away to Maritimo).

Failing to make any impact, the misfit winger was named on the bench eight times for domestic games between August 2012 and the January 2013 but never blooded.

After some underwhelming reserve outings, Amalfitano was made available for loan and agreed a season-long switch to French Ligue 2 side Dijon in August 2013.

That was made permanent in July 2014 and Romain remained there until October 2020 when moving to Saudi Arabian side Al-Faisaly.

He then signed for Western Sydney Wanderers in June 2022 but had left by the following May.

1990 Luuk De Jong born Aigle, Switzerland (2014)

Over two years after he was first linked with a move to United, De Jong joined on loan from Borussia Monchengladbach in late January 2014 - arriving as Yohan Cabaye left Tyneside for Paris St.Germain.

Joining De Grafschaap in 2001 (his family having relocated from Switzerland to Holland in 1994), Luuk's senior debut came in the 2008/09 season - a campaign that ended in relegation for the Dutch side.

Moving on to FC Twente for £700K, he was on the fringe of the side who won the Dutch title in 2010, scoring a total of 37 goals in the following two seasons.

Appearing at youth & U21 level for Holland, De Jong's senior debut came in a friendly against Austria in 2011, scoring his first goal against Finland a year later

Signed by Borussia Monchengladbach for £12.5m, De Jong scored six times in his first season but was left on the bench in the following campaign before agreeing a loan move to SJP in January 2014.

Given the number 18 squad number formerly worn by Jonas Gutierrez, De Jong made his debut at half time in the Tyne-wear derby with his side already two goals behind.

A first start then came in a 0-3 defeat at Chelsea and he racked up a dozen outings and spent 671 minutes without ever remotely looking like scoring a goal. Tragic.

United rightly passed up the chance to sign Luuk permanently for £8m and he was sent back to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Elder brother Siem then arrived at SJP on a six year contract from Ajax in July 2014, revealing in interviews that his move had come about in part his brother's recommendation.

Thoughts/fears of a De Jong family reunion at SJP were thankfully dispelled when a £4m transfer to PSV Eindhoven was agreed.

Ending that long goal drought by scoring on his competitive debut, Luuk recaptured his scoring touch in the Eredivisie and also won full international caps for Holland.

Scoring no less than 94 goals for PSV over five seasons during which he collected three championsip medals, the summer 2019 transfer window then saw him depart in favour of Spanish side Sevilla for £11m.

That was amazing enough but this modern-day Jon Dahl Tomasson then managed to score twice in the delayed Europa League Final in August 2020 to beat Inter Milan 3-2.

Incredibly, Luuk then joined Barcelona on a season-long loan, scoring seven times in 29 games before returning to PSV in July 2022.

His time at PSV came to an end with a remarkable scoring rate of 57 goals in 89 appearances and he joined Porto in August 2025.

Future Magpies John Craggs, Stuart Boam and David Mills all appeared for the Boro in a game televised on "Shoot" the following afternoon. Craggs had also begun his career at United.

Is this the point at which Newcastle started going backwards and finally fell out of the top flight six years later?

Hopes of Champions League qualification died after a 1-0 advantage from the first leg wiped out and the tie went to extra time.

With no breakthrough, spot kicks were required and after five each left the sides locked at 2-2, Jermaine Jenas put United ahead for the first time as the shootout entered sudden death.

Ilic levelled, Aaron Hughes missed and Cirkovic netted to give Partizan victory and ruin Bobby Robson's 200th game in charge.
