U21s:
First point for
second string
Result:
Birmingham U21s 2 Newcastle U21s 2

Beaten in their opening two PL2 games on home territory, Newcastle
U21s secured their first point of the season with a 2-2 draw at Birmingham City's
training ground.
Incoming coach Adam Lawrence, not due to take up his position
until next month, was watching from the sidelines at the Knighthead
Performance Centre.
Interim coach Robbie Stockdale remains in charge before moving to assisting Lawrence.
Both witnessed an uneventful first 45 minutes and it was goalless at
the interval.
The deadlock was broken four minutes into the second half when Alfie
Harrison's corner from the right was headed home by Magpies captain,
Charlie McArthur.
The home side equalised in the 58th minute when Bria Bateman
eventually fired in after multiple shots were blocked and the ball
bounced around the box but wasn't cleared.
City took the lead in the 79th minute when Aurelien Guernier was
fould by the byline and he got up to convert the spot-kick.
But Sean Neave calmly rounded the 'keeper and slotted into
the net in the 90th minute.
Team: Ad.Harrison, C.Thompson (Watts 61), Charlton, McArthur,
Pivas (Heffernan 63), Bailey, Sanusi (Harper 24), Hernes, Neave,
Al.Harrison, Seung-soo (Brayson 60).
Sub n/u: Taylor.
Booked: Al.Harrison.
BCFC: O'Sullivan, Da Silva (Boakye 90+7), Quirk, Burrell,

61), Bateman, Isichei.
Subs n/u: Warmington, Pennington.

Originally advertised as a 7pm kick-off at Stratford Town FC, the
fixture went ahead at City's training
ground in Kings Norton.

Kuol Czechs out

The permanent exit of Garang Kuol was announced on Friday
evening with the young Australian winger joining Sparta Prague.
The 20-year old international has signed a "long contract" for an
undisclosed fee after failing to break into the first team squad on
Tyneside.
September
2022 saw Newcastle complete a move for the forward from
Australian A-League side Central Coast Mariners - although the contract didn't
commence until January 2023.
Born in Egypt of Sudanese parents, Garang and his family were granted refugee
status and subsequently settled in Australia.
Hitting the headlines after playing for the A-League All-Stars XI against
Barcelona earlier in 2022, Kuol was linked with various clubs before choosing
for Newcastle - even though he'd never started a senior match at that point in
his career.
Watching his new side win 4-1 at Fulham from the away end after completing the
formalities of his move, Garang returned to Australia and continued to play for
Central Coast over the following months.
January 2023 found him on Tyneside before completing a loan move to Hearts for
the remainder of the season, although he was rarely called upon at Tynecastle.
A second temporary departure from SJP followed in August 2023, making a season
long switch to Dutch side FC Volendam.
He featured in the second half of the pre-season friendly
against SpVgg Unterhaching but a thigh injury prevented him
going out on another loan.

Nick of time

An eventful day in the transfer window saw Newcastle's hopes of
concluding deals for Jorgen Strand Larsen of Wolves and
fellow forward Yoane Wissa from Brentford stall, resulting in
a revival of interest in another target.
That's Stuttgart's Nick Woltemade, with the 23 year-old
German international flying into Tyneside on Thursday ahead of his
medical on Friday, following agreement on a record £64m transfer
fee.
His current club took to social media on Thursday night to say that
the player had been released for talks, with an offer from a
European club for an immediate transfer received."
Woltemade scored 17 goals last season in all competitions after
completing a move from his hometown club Werder Bremen in 2024, when
he signed a four year contract.
That transfer followed his participation in the Euro U21 finals when
he finished as top scorer with six goals, but failed to find the net
in the final when Germany lost 2-3 to an England side including
Newcastle's Tino Livramento.
Sky Sports report that the Magpies still hope to complete the
signing of Wissa, which would in turn open the door for the
departure of Alexander Isak.
Interest in Woltemade increased when Wolves made it clear that their
priority was to retain Larsen, regardless of the fee offered and the
player's stated desire to join United.
The transfer window closes at 7pm on Monday.

Bantams in Toon
Newcastle begin the defence of their Carabao Cup title with a Third Round
home tie against League One Bradford City.
Third Round ties will be played across two consecutive midweeks (w/c
September 15th and w/c September 22nd).
The Magpies are in Champions League action during the first of those weeks,
meaning that their Carabao Cup tie will be played on or around
September 23rd or 24th.
That falls between the Premier League visit to Bournemouth and home meeting
against Arsenal.
Season ticket holders who signed up for the Carabao Cup home ticket scheme
will be charged £20 and £25 depending on their seating area. Payment will be
taken within seven days of the fixture date confirmation.
Graham Alexander's side reached the Third Round thanks to a 2-1 victory at
Blackburn Rovers and a 3-0 success at fellow Championship side Stoke City.
The Bantams currently sit fourth in League One, with three wins and two
draws from their opening five EFL fixtures.
This is the fourth time that the two sides have been paired in this
competition, the most recent meeting a 4-3 Third Round victory at Gallowgate
for Newcastle in 2000.
The Magpies lost a two-legged tie in the 1986/87 season - beaten 0-2 at
Odsal and winning 1-0 at SJP but got the better of Bradford in 1984/85,
following up a 3-1 victory on Tyneside with a 1-0 success at Valley Parade.

Update:
U21 Coach appointed
From NUFC, Wednesday:
Newcastle United will appoint Adam Lawrence as the club's
new Under-21s Lead Coach on 1st September.
The 38-year-old will join the Magpies' Academy following his
departure from Manchester United, where he was Lead Coach for the
club's Under-18s side.
During his tenure, Lawrence led his Under-18s team to three
pieces of silverware in the 2023/24 campaign, winning the Premier
League regional and national titles as well as the Premier League
Cup.
Last season, Lawrence guided his side to second in the Premier
League North, while they narrowly missed out on reaching the FA
Youth Cup final after losing to eventual winners Aston Villa in the
semi-finals on penalties.
Alongside his role as Under-18s Lead Coach, Lawrence also held
the role of Head of Player Development (U13-U16), where he was
tasked with ensuring a smooth transition for players as they began
their scholarships.
Prior to joining Manchester United, Lawrence spent eight years
at Charlton Athletic's Academy, where he served as the club's Head
of Coaching, as well as working within Millwall's youth system.
He will be assisted by Robbie Stockdale, who has been in
interim charge of the Under-21s side since the departure of Diarmuid
O'Carroll.

Targett made 47 senior competitive appearances since arriving on

Foxes fettled
Newcastle U18s 3 Leicester City U18s 2
It's now three wins out of three for Newcastle
U18s, who followed up back-to-back league victories with success in
their opening Premier League Cup tie on Tuesday.
Coach Chris Moore gave a debut to Isaac Moran following his arrival
from Liverpool and the black and whites led at half time thanks to
Sam Pinnington's
32nd minute shot.
City almost equalised
straight after the break when Alpha Diallo headed against the post before an emphatic finish from Alex
O'Donovan doubled the lead, hammering a shot home off the
underside of the bar in the 57th minute.
That prompted the visitors into a double switch that quickly boosted
their attacking threat and they reduced the arrears 10 minutes later
- the referee's assistant confirming that Lorenz Hutchinson's header
had crossed the line despite the claims of home 'keeper George Mair.
United's two goal lead was restored on 71 minutes when the ball was nodded
down for Mohammed Waddani to hook in from close range for his
second goal of the season.
Luqman Aideed's finish at the far post then made it 3-2 to United
with five minutes of normal time left, heralding a frantic finale
that was memorable for the wrong reasons.
A mass confrontation
near to United
corner flag following a foul ended with match officials and coaches
from both sides intervening to separate warring players.
Referee Stephen Beresford red-carded Foxes pair Diallo and David
Anugo, while two home players were cautioned.
United's Noel Morgan left on a stretcher with his left forearm strapped
up before the game belatedly restarted and the final seconds were
played before a second half that had been
extended to 61 minutes was concluded.
Team: Mair, Patterson, Morgan, Johnson, Moran (Old
46), Alabi, Pinnington (E.Ndiweni
75), Lucas, Wooster (Goodbrand
71), O'Donovan (Hutchison
71), Waddani.
Sub n/u: Holland.
Booked: Wooster, Alabi, Goodbrand, (Holland).
PS: Newcastle's U18 league home game against Leeds United this
Saturday (30th) has been switched and now takes place away at Thorp
Arch. Kick-off remains Noon.
The other meeting of two sides will now be staged on Tyneside in
January 2026.
Meltdown:
Isak timeline
Sun 04.05
Isak scored his 54th Premier League
goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at
Brighton.
Sun 18.05 Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told
the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than
surgery was forecast.
Sun 25.05 Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to
Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.
Tue 27.05 Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to
a minor injury, presumably groin.
Mon 14.07 Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for
a week-long training camp.
Tue 15.07 The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they
were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.
Sat 19.07 Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the
media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more
training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming
tour of Asia.
Mon 21.07 Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park
but reportedly cut short the session.
(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)
Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane
Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.
Wed 23.07 Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo
Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace)
Isak.
Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media
outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move
away from the club".
The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an
extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per
week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial
status.
Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a
basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's
thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would
remain a Newcastle player.
Sun 27.07 Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there
was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.
Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.
Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak
and he remained a Magpie.
Wed 30.07 Spanish media claimed that Isak was training alone in San
Sebastian.
Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.
Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train
separately from the rest of the senior squad.
Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol,
Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No
disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.
Sat 16.08 Isak wasn't involved in the Premier League season opener at
Aston Villa, with travelling supporters airing "one greedy bastard" chants
after full time.
Tue 19.08 Isak released a statement explaining his absence from the
PFA awards ceremony, which included this:
"The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my
position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is
misleading."
Tue 19.08 NUFC released their own statement.

On This Day in History |

29th August |
|
Born Or Died:
1929 Brian Powton born, Newcastle.
(194?-50)
Goalkeeper who failed to make the grade at United and left without making a
senior appearance.
Later moving on to Preston North End,
Hartlepools and North Shields, Brian passed away during 1985.
1963
Tommy Wright born, Belfast.
(1988-93 &
1999)
"The Barman" arrived on
Tyneside from his hometown club Linfield in the same manner as his
manager Willie McFaul had done some 22 years previously.
Seeing off the challenges of Dave Beasant, John Burridge
and Gary Kelly to claim a regular starting place,
Wright was a popular 'keeper who posted some fine displays
- notably a miracle save away to Bristol Rovers and
defying Bournemouth on one leg in the FA Cup.
Losing his place through injury to Pavel Srnicek in 1991
had seen him briefly loaned to Hull City, but it was the
arrival of Mike Hooper from Liverpool that ended his first stint on Tyneside.
A move to First Division Nottingham Forest in September
1993 followed three League appearances for United and he was part of the City Ground's promotion
side.
Loaned out to Reading in 1996, Wright saw a loan spell at
Manchester City turned into a permanent deal the following
year.
1999 saw Tommy win the last of his 31 international caps
and go out on loan to Wrexham, before a call from Ruud
Gullit saw him heading back temporarily to Gallowgate following a goalkeeping crisis.
He added three more appearances to his Toon tally
(including a second debut in the mackem monsoon game) -
each of them for different bosses - the second a 1-5
loss at Old Trafford under caretaker Steve Clarke and the
last being the 1-0 defeat at Chelsea that began the Sir
Bobby Robson era.
With his month's loan then up and with John Karelse having
arrived just before Gullit left, Wright returned to Maine
Road.
September 2000 saw him between the posts as Newcastle won 1-0 at
City - what proved to be his final game for them.
A loan stint at Bolton then followed before he became a
free agent in 2001, signing for Ballymena United back in
Northern Ireland.
A move into coaching saw him training 'keepers with the
national side and also Linfield, before taking charge of Limavady.
After a second spell at Ballymena, he was headhunted by Norwich
City in 2008,
joining Paul Stephenson and Lee Clark in Glenn Roeder's
backroom team at Carrow Road.
Following Roeder's removal, Tommy became goalkeeping coach for Shamrock Rovers before returning to management with Lisburn
Distillery in Northern Ireland.
Resigning in November 2011, Wright became assistant to his ex-Manchester City
and Northern Ireland team mate, Steve Lomas, at SPL side St. Johnstone.
And when Lomas quit to take over at Millwall in June 2013, Tommy was
appointed Saints manager.
Leading them to a
first major trophy in their 130 year history - a Scottish Cup win over Dundee
United in 2014, he completed seven years before standing down in May 2020 -
with two years of his contract still to run.
Tommy took over as Kilmarnock boss in February 2021 but had been sacked by
December of that year. He was appointed manager of Northern Ireland's U21 side in August 2023.

1976
Jon Dahl Tomasson born, Copenhagen, Denmark. (1997-98)
Beginning his playing career with Danish side Køge, striker Jon
Dahl was playing for Dutch side Heerenveen when United paid £2.5m for him ahead of the 1997/98 season.
Impressing in pre-season and scoring four goals in friendlies - including a
cracker at Birmingham City, Tomasson debuted in the home season
opener against Sheffield Wednesday, alongside fellow new boys
Shay Given, Stuart Pearce, Alessandro Pistone
and Temuri Ketsbaia.
The Dane had two efforts chalked off and then miscued at the Gallowgate End in
front of 'keeper Kevin Pressman. Fortunately
Tino Asprilla was on hand to net the winner in a 2-1 success, but that miss
seemed to set the tone for Tomasson on Tyneside.
With Alan Shearer out injured after a pre -season mishap at Goodison, Tomasson
would be fielded as United's main attacker at times by Kenny Dalglish -
something which he just wasn't physically ready for.
Unable to score, by November he'd been credited with a goal by United in a home
game against Leicester, although the ball did little more than brush off him en
route to the goal following Des Hamilton's shot.
He did truly find the net in his own right later that month at Derby in the
League Cup (inflicting a first competitive defeat on the Rams at their new
Pride Park Stadium) and in a victory away at Crystal Palace.
A fourth and final goal came his way the following January in a defeat at Sheffield Wednesday, but the damage was done; both in his mind and in
the opinion of many Toon fans - one popular jibe being that "we'd left the
mascot on the pitch".
United recouped their £2.5m fee in June 1998, when Tomasson returned to
the Netherlands with Feyenoord - and from then on, his career was in the
ascendancy.
Winning the title in his first season, Jon Dahl scored the
winning goal in the 2002 UEFA Cup final for Feyenoord and then won the Champions League and
a Serie A crown after moving on to AC
Milan.
The Dane then switched to Bundesliga side Stuttgart and had a stint in Spain with Villarreal before
rejoining Feyenoord in 2008.
August 2008 saw him reach a century
of international caps for Denmark, appearing in Copenhagen
as they lost 0-3 to Spain.
However, the planned celebrations at the game were
cancelled as a mark of respect following a plane crash in
Madrid.
Tomasson ultimately bowed out of the international scene in June 2010, earning
his 112th cap and scoring his 52nd goal for Denmark as they lost 3-1 to Japan
in a World Cup Final tie played in Rustenberg.
He retired from club football at the end of the 2010/11 season, having spent a
good deal of that campaign in the Feyenoord treatment room.
Tomasson then
joined the backroom staff at city neighbours Excelsior and was appointed
head coach in June 2013.
Moving on to Roda JC in January 2014, a nightmarish time at the Dutch side then
saw him sacked by May - less than six months into a three and a half year
contract.
Jon Dahl then reappeared as assistant coach of second tier side Vitesse Arnhem,
before taking the second-in-command role at the Danish
national team in March 2016.
A return to club management followed in early 2020, taking over at Swedish
side Malmo, before leaving at his own request in December 2021.
Tomasson took over at Championship side Blackburn Rovers in June 2022,
missing out on the play-offs on goal difference in his first season at
Ewood Park.
He left in February 2024, shortly before Newcastle's penalty
shoot-out victory in the FA Cup and was appointed manager of
the Swedish national team.
The highlight of Tomasson's career remains his rejecting a move to the mackems in favour of Newcastle - famously
captured on the unwittingly hilarious documentary "Premier
Passions"....

1976
Stephen Carr born, Dublin, Ireland.
(2004-08)

Bobby Robson's final signing for the club
was a
highly-rated right back from Spurs who came from Ireland as a youngster.
However, a serious knee injury disrupted Carr's career at both club and
international level and it was a case of damaged goods by the time
he joined United in 2004 - two years after first being linked.
His only goal for Newcastle came in a rare success at Southampton in only his
seventh outing for the Magpies - and it was a fairly even descent downhill
thereafter.
Knee, stomach and hernia problems saw him sidelined at SJP, while his lack of pace
when fit was an embarrassment.
Our own personal point of no return came in Lisbon, when we slipped out of the
UEFA Cup on a night when Carr was anything but the composed, experienced
international that his CV suggested.
There again, playing in a defence including Babayaro (see below) and Bramble
would probably see a decent lawyer have any charges dismissed on the grounds of
diminished responsibility....
Carr's departure from SJP at the end of the 2007/08
looked to be the end of him as a player, with rumours
of new clubs and trials coming to nothing, aside from
a brief spell training with Leicester City.
Announcing his retirement in December 2008, Carr reversed
that decision just two months
later, joining Birmingham City.
Thirteen appearances
for the Blues helped them to promotion and Carr signed
a new two year deal at the Premier League side.
Despite captaining the side to League Cup final
success at Wembley (his second winner's medal in that
competition after securing one for Spurs in 1999),
Carr was unable to prevent relegation for the Blues.
Signing a one-year deal with Birmingham after Lee
Clark became manager a thigh injury saw him
sidelined in 2012/13 and knee surgery saw Carr retire
that May.
Clark had hoped to persuade Carr to stay on as a coach but
he and his family moved to Spain to pursue business
interests that included a bar and player management.

1978
Celestine Boyd Jonto Hycieth Babayaro born, Kaduna, Nigeria.
(2005-07)

Two rotten full-backs sharing the same
birthday (see above)....
The annoying thing with Baba is that
he
was obviously talented but seemingly chose to keep it
as far from the playing surface as he could and was
perpetually injured.
One note of credit - he played for us
the day after hearing his brother had died.
His only goal for the club came against Coventry City in the
FA Cup - celebrated with a LuaLua-type
hand spring.
Arriving from Chelsea for £1m in January 2005 - a deal that Souness
later distanced himself from - former Olympian Babayaro survived at SJP until
ejected in December 2007.
A move to MLS side LA Galaxy in 2008 proved to be short-lived, coach Ruud
Gullit declining to offer him a contract after he played just 45 minutes of a friendly.
And following a bout of malaria, Babayaro had a brief flirtation with Pompey
ahead of the 2008/09 season before again being released - although he did
manage to get a free trip
back to Nigeria with 'Arry's mob touring his home country.
Babayaro officially announced his retirement in July 2010 and by February 2011
had been declared bankrupt.
PS: 2017 saw Babayaro's son Ryan Hycieth briefly in the news when the 10
year-old starred at the Newcastle United Foundation Cup event in the presence
of Rafa Benitez.

1990 Patrick Van Aanholt born,
's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
(2010)

United dipped into the loan market early in 2010,
recruiting Chelsea's Dutch U19 international to fill a vacancy at left back
caused by injury to Jose Enrique.
Van Aanholt had caught Chris Hughton's
eye when playing against the Magpies a month earlier
on loan at Coventry City - which had crucially given him experience of playing
Championship football.
Debuting in United's 0-0 draw at Leicester City, he
quickly settled in and deservedly took the applause of
Toon fans after his seventh and final game
for the club, at Watford.
Signed from PSV Eindhoven in 2007, Patrick got as
far as the Chelsea first team bench before his Magpies
posting and following his return to Stamford Bridge
from SJP, had two substitute outings in the
Premier League.
Scored against
Newcastle for Chelsea in the League Cup, he then linked up with Leicester City for a
loan period in January 2011.
Later temporary switches to Wigan Athletic and Dutch side Vitesse
Arnhem followed - the latter ending up as a two and
half season loan stint until summer 2014 - by which time he'd won the first of
nineteen senior caps for the Netherlands.
A £1.5m move to the mackems in July 2014 saw Patrick living in the Ponteland
area and playing regularly
on wearside until coming to his
senses in January 2017 and submitting a transfer request.
A move to fellow relegation strugglers Crystal Palace for a quoted £14m
reunited him with his former mackem boss Sam Allardyce.
Remaining at Selhurst Park after the arrival of Roy
Hodgson (who himself replaced Frank de Boer after
his brief and disastrous time in charge), Van
Aanholt played his 100th PL game for them during the
2019/20 season.
He also netted from
a fine free-kick to ensure Newcastle lost at Palace in February 2020.
Signing for Turkish side Galatasaray on a free transfer in July 2021, van
Aanholt returned to former club PSV on loan in January 2023 and then extended
that deal for a further year.
He joined Sparta Rotterdam in November 2024 on a
free transfer.

The man pictured with the kipper tie is Alan Brown
(see 1983 below) and when he tumbled under a challenge
from Steve Hardwick in the United box, things began to
look very bleak.
Toon old boy Pop Robson dispatched the spot kick to put
the mackems two ahead, but the remainder of the game
belonged to United, who produced a stirring comeback.
A first goal for the club from Ian Davies was then
followed by a fine header from the diminutive Peter
Cartwight, who was then only denied a late winner by Barry Siddall.

Pearce and Franz Carr were in the Forest side, whose
goal came when Carr's ball in was missed by goalkeeper
Martin Thomas and ended up at the feet of Nigel Clough.

Transfer target Michael
Owen travelled to the North East for a meeting with United
officials in rural Northumberland. holding face-to-face
talks with Freddy Shepherd, Graeme Souness and
Alan Shearer.
However,
he had
already met Liverpool officials, including manager Rafa Benitez.
Crucially though, there was no word from Madrid of an
accepted bid from Anfield.
2006 Newcastle's second string began the new
league season by extending their unbeaten run at Kingston Park
to 15 matches - but should have claimed all three points.
James Vaughan gave Everton the lead to mark his comeback after a year out with a serious
knee injury that required a Steadman repair.Goals
from Chris Shanks and Kris Gate then put United ahead
before a melee in the home box saw Connor win a penalty, going down under challenge from
David Edgar.
Amid strong protests, Mark Hughes
sent Tim Krul the wrong way to level the scores up and give ex-Toon
Academy boss Alan Irvine a point on his return to his former employers.
