Update:
Wissa: wanting away

Following his absence from the side beaten 1-2 at the mackems on Saturday - meaning he's not kicked a ball as yet this season, Brentford forward Yoane Wissa issued the following statement. It's beyond question that the other Premier League club mentioned is Newcastle:

"Over the past few weeks, there has been increased speculation about my future at Brentford Football Club. As a result, I wanted to speak directly and honestly about exactly where things stand.

"I have stayed silent for much of the summer, but with just hours remaining of the transfer window I feel compelled make it clear that I want to leave Brentford. I believe the club are unduly standing in my way despite a series of fair offers throughout the summer.

"I have always given 100 per cent for Brentford since the day I signed back in 2021. I am proud of what we have built together and have never taken the opportunity to play for the club for granted.

Brentford fans will always have a special place in my heart. And I have always conducted myself professionally, both on and off the pitch. It has been a privilege to wear this shirt for 149 games and celebrate 49 goals.

"Earlier this summer, I held open discussions with the club's senior management, including key directors and the new head coach. I made clear my intention to explore a new challenge.

"During these conversations, it was confirmed to me and my representatives that the club would not stand in my way if a reasonable offer was received. This was also put in writing.

"Based on this understanding, I sought to find a new club, keeping Brentford informed with full transparency at every step.

"I received a formal offer from another Premier League club and communicated I wanted to join. I was under the impression, from all my conversations with Brentford, that there was a mutual agreement to part ways.

"Yet as the window comes to an end, the club has now significantly changed its position, going against what was communicated. This has left me in a difficult and frustrating position. The promise that I could leave this summer has not been fulfilled. It saddens me to have to write that, and I maintain total respect for the club and its fans.

"I want to make it clear that I have not acted unprofessionally, nor do I wish to leave Brentford on bad terms. I have been transparent in my position throughout. I have continued to communicate openly with the club and conduct myself in a way that reflects my values as both a footballer and a human being.

"I remain hopeful that a fair and reasonable resolution can still be found before the transfer window shuts.

"In the meantime, I must do what I feel is right for my career and family and insist that Brentford honour their promise to let me join a new club and at a fair price.

"I want to thank all the Brentford fans for their support and understanding during this difficult situation. Your energy and belief in me has always meant a great deal. This has never been about walking away from what is a fantastic football club. It's about being allowed to move forward with Brentford's blessing based on repeated promises that I could leave for a new chapter this summer.

"Being made to stay beyond this summer will only tarnish four wonderful years at this incredible club and so I ask Brentford's owners and directors to now honour their promise to let me leave in the final hours of the window."

PS: Saturday also saw Wolves without their unsettled striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, missing a 0-1 home defeat to Everton due to an achilles injury that manager Vitor Pereira was adamant had preventing him from appearing.

The transfer window closes at 7pm on Monday.

Premier League:
Goalless again

Leeds United  0  Newcastle  0

Newcastle's winless start to the season extended to three games on Saturday after another goalless away game, this time at Elland Road against newly-promoted Leeds United.

It was a game where neither side looked like scoring in the heavy Yorkshire rain and Eddie Howe's makeshift side struggled to create any meaningful chances.

Starting a Premier League game for the first time, Will Osula had the first opportunity in the 16th minute when he controlled Jacob Ramsey's cross but saw his shot blocked by Gabriel Gudmundsson.

That was a rare effort at goal and it wasn't until the 43rd minute that Jacob Murphy had a shot on target which was beaten away by goalkeeper Lucas Perri.

Fabian Schar then had a shot deflected just over the bar, but in truth it was a half of little incident or excitement.

Ramsey was replaced by Lewis Miley at the break but there was little change in the sterile play from both sides, a rare moment of excitement seeing Perri tip wide Murphy's shot from distance.

The introduction of Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes on the right and left flanks respectively failed to provide the required impetus; both struggling to beat opponents and what crosses there were either over-hit or aimless.

Substitute Lewis Hall was next to try his luck from outside the box and his effort flew narrowly over the bar, but what passed for chances after that point came at other end - substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin's late effort saved by Pope with his foot.

Neither team could celebrate their point at the final whistle but there was little disappointment on the faces of either manager after what were difficult weeks.

A clearly emotional Sean Longstaff left the field after the final whistle with a Newcastle shirt draped across his shoulders, acknowledging the applause of the away fans.

The midfielder gave a spirited display on his first Premier League start for Leeds, but had he played for the visitors, it's unlikely that the scoreline would have been altered.

Jacob Ramsey meanwhile made his first start as a Magpie but was replaced at half time after an ankle concern.

Already lacking the injured Joelinton and suspended Anthony Gordon, Eddie Howe replaced Sven Botman in the second half after he received treatment on the field, but played down concerns that was due to an injury.

Newcastle fell to 15th but Sunday's results could see them drop further before an international break where new boy
Nick Woltemade - here today - links up with Germany and could face a Slovakia side featuring Martin Dubravka.

By the time he returns, United's record signing and his new fans will know whether his was the final action of a transfer window that has visibly destabilised the club. Hopefully not.

Full match report to follow.

Team: Pope, Trippier (Hall 62), Botman (Barnes 69), Schar, Burn, Livramento, Tonali, Guimaraes, Ramsey (L.Miley 46), J.Murphy (Elanga 62), Osula.

Booked: Gnonto.

Crowd: 36,727 including around 2,900 away fans who made their feelings known about the Alexander Isak situation clear at various points during the game.

New signing Nick Woltemade was in attendance and mobbed as he made his way through the away fan zone before kick-off. From a previous era, goalscorers Peter Beardsley and Imre Varadi were also both spotted.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

"I thought defensively, we were very strong. We've been really good in the three games so far in that respect, but we've got work to do at the other end of the pitch, which is really unlike us.

"We've historically been a really good attacking team, very free-scoring and very good at chance creation, but it hasn't quite been there. We're disappointed with that aspect of our play.

"I don't want to sit here and say that is the only reason
[absent players]. We have to do better with what we have, but when you lose the quality of players that we have from last season to this, Anthony Gordon is a big miss and Joelinton. Alex is a huge player for us. so take those three players away and you're going to suffer slightly.

"But I still think we've got really good players on the pitch and we need to do better.

"We're really looking forward to that clarity in terms of what our squad looks like... once we have that, we'll move forward and I'm sure we can do really well this year.

"We're really pleased with what we've done so far. I genuinely feel we're a lot stronger squad-wise than we were last year.

"We've had an issue at the top end of the pitch so fingers crossed we might be able to do some more."

On the Botman replacement:

"I don't think that's an injury: tt was the state of the game. Again, I think with the new protocols, when players go down injured and the physio comes on, they're not off for longer periods than they've ever been.

"So, there was a good chance for us to change system and to try and win the game.”

Latest:
Woltemade's a Mag

Newcastle have now confirmed the transfer of forward Nick Woltemade, who joins from Bundesliga side Stuttgart for a club record fee that is undisclosed, but exceeds the claimed £63m paid to Real Sociedad for Alexander Isak in 2022.

He will wear squad number 27.

Standing six foot six inches tall, the 23 year-old German international flew into Tyneside on Thursday evening and was spotted inside SJP on Friday. He then turned up at Saturday's 0-0 draw with Leeds at Elland Road.

Woltemade scored 17 goals last season in all competitions after completing a move from his hometown club Werder Bremen in 2024, when he signed a four year contract.

That transfer followed his participation in the Euro U21 finals when he finished as top scorer with six goals, but failed to find the net in the final when Germany lost 2-3 to an England side including Newcastle's Tino Livramento.

Leeds United U18s  3  Newcastle U18s  3

With three wins from their opening trio of league and cup games so far this season, Newcastle U18s were at Thorp Arch on Saturday in a fixture switched from Tyneside.

And the blue-clad visitors made an excellent start when Sam Alabi shot home with only four minutes on the clock.

That advantage was wiped out on the hour by Callum Mills, only for Newcastle to regain the lead thanks to a 62nd minute header by substitute Isaac Moran from a corner.

The Magpies extended their advantage further when Henry Johnson's low 75th effort from distance flew in via a post.

Within four minutes the Whites had replied when a loose ball was forced home by midfielder Kenneth Mensah and they levelled seven minutes from full time when a cross from the left was deflected past George Mair by Aiden Thompson.

Team: Mair, Johnson, Goodbrand, Epia, Old (Moran 46), Finneran (O'Donovan 46), Waddani, Alabi, Hutchison (Bloomer 60), Wooster, Seldon (Pinnington 81).

Latest:
Kuol Czechs out

The departure of Garang Kuol was announced on Friday evening with the Australian international winger making a permanent switch to Sparta Prague for a nominal fee.

That reunites him with his former Magpies U21 coach Diarmuid O'Carroll, who made the same move in June.

20-year old Kuol has signed a "long contract" with the Czechs after failing to break into the first team squad during his two and a half years on Tyneside.

He wasn't involved in Sunday's 3-1 home over Zlin.

The Egyptian-born player who settled in Australia joined United from A-League side Central Coast Mariners in late 2022, arriving early the following year and immediately beginning a loan spell in Scotland with Hearts.

That did little to boost his reputation and a second temporary departure from Gallowgate in August 2023 saw him enjoy even less pitch time at Dutch side FC Volendam.

In between those two loan moves came a taste of senior football in the black and white; playing in both post-season kickabouts in Australia and scoring in the penalty shootout that defeated Spurs in Melbourne.

Eight league and cup goals for Newcastle U21s last season failed to convince Eddie Howe of his worth to the senior squad and
his final outing for the Magpies was a low-key shift against Gateshead in the National League Cup earlier this month.

The Magpies may have hit pay dirt with their speculative acquisition of Yankuba Minteh, but the Kuol punt will go down in our recent history as a misadventure.

2025/26:
Bantams in Toon

Newcastle begin the defence of their Carabao Cup title with a Third Round home tie against League One Bradford City.

The scheduling of Newcastle's Champions League home game against Barcelona on Thursday September 18th will result in the Premier League visit to Bournemouth moving from Saturday 20th to Sunday 21st.

As a consequence, the Bantams will visit Gallowgate on Wednesday September 24th (theoretically it could also be on Thursday 25th, given that Newcastle aren't back in PL action until Arsenal visit SJP on Sunday 28th).

Season ticket holders who signed up for the Carabao Cup home ticket scheme will be charged £20 and £25 depending on their seating area. Payment will be taken within seven days of the fixture date confirmation.

Graham Alexander's side reached the Third Round thanks to a 2-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers and a 3-0 success at fellow Championship side Stoke City.

The Bantams currently sit third in League One, with four wins and two draws from their opening six EFL fixtures.

This is the fourth time that the two sides have been paired in this competition, the most recent meeting a 4-3 Third Round victory at Gallowgate for Newcastle in 2000.

The Magpies lost a two-legged tie in the 1986/87 season - beaten 0-2 at Odsal and winning 1-0 at SJP but got the better of Bradford in 1984/85, following up a 3-1 victory on Tyneside with a 1-0 success at Valley Parade.

Update:
U21 Coach appointed

From NUFC, Wednesday:

Newcastle United will appoint Adam Lawrence as the club's new Under-21s Lead Coach on 1st September.

The 38-year-old will join the Magpies' Academy following his departure from Manchester United, where he was Lead Coach for the club's Under-18s side.

During his tenure, Lawrence led his Under-18s team to three pieces of silverware in the 2023/24 campaign, winning the Premier League regional and national titles as well as the Premier League Cup.

Last season, Lawrence guided his side to second in the Premier League North, while they narrowly missed out on reaching the FA Youth Cup final after losing to eventual winners Aston Villa in the semi-finals on penalties.

Alongside his role as Under-18s Lead Coach, Lawrence also held the role of Head of Player Development (U13-U16), where he was tasked with ensuring a smooth transition for players as they began their scholarships.

Prior to joining Manchester United, Lawrence spent eight years at Charlton Athletic's Academy, where he served as the club's Head of Coaching, as well as working within Millwall's youth system.

He will be assisted by Robbie Stockdale, who has been in interim charge of the Under-21s side since the departure of Diarmuid O'Carroll.

Restocked for the new season is the Shearer bucket hat from Football Bobbles, with the 1996/97 change kit colours on one side and black & white on the reverse.

These are available to purchase here in three sizes.

The Tyneside-based company also has a brand-new range of bespoke T-shirts depicting the life and times of Newcastle's 50s hero and FA Cup winner George Robledo.

These are available to purchase here in a bewildering variety of sizes and colours.

The prize in our latest competition was a Shearer bucket hat or a Robledo T-shirt and to stand a chance of winning we asked which former Magpie played for Liverpool the last time we won a PL game against them in 2015.

It was of course James Milner and the winning entry came from Peter Cowell.

Old boys:
Ritchie a Royal

Ex-Magpie Matt Ritchie is on the move again barely a year after leaving Tyneside, joining League One Reading on a two year deal following his release by Portsmouth.

Fellow former midfielder Isaac Hayden meanwhile has completed a permanent return to Championship side QPR after leaving Gallowgate.

The 30 year-old made his second R's debut on Saturday, joining as a late substitute in a 3-1 victory over Charlton Athletic at Loftus Road.

Switching MLS clubs meanwhile is Matty Longstaff, who has joined Montreal from Toronto in an exchange deal.

Meltdown:
Isak timeline

Sun 04.05
Isak scored his 54th Premier League goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Sun 18.05
Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than surgery was forecast.

Sun 25.05
Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.

Tue 27.05
Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to a minor injury, presumably groin.

Mon 14.07
Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for a week-long training camp.

Tue 15.07
The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.

Sat 19.07
Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming tour of Asia.

Mon 21.07
Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park but reportedly cut short the session.

(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)

Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.

Wed 23.07
Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace) Isak.

Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club".

The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial status.

Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would remain a Newcastle player.

Sun 27.07
Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.

Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.

Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak and he remained a Magpie.

Wed 30.07 Spanish media claimed that Isak was training alone in San Sebastian.

Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.

Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train separately from the rest of the senior squad.

Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol, Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.

Sat 16.08 Isak wasn't involved in the Premier League season opener at Aston Villa, with travelling supporters airing "one greedy bastard" chants after full time.

Tue 19.08 Isak released a statement explaining his absence from the PFA awards ceremony, which included this:

"The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading."

Tue 19.08 NUFC released a statement, including this:

"Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer."

Sat 30.08 NUFC fans made their feelings clear about the missing number 14 during the 0-0 draw at Leeds.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

All 2025/26 Premier League away ticket prices will be priced at £30.

On This Day in History
31st August

Born Or Died:

1910 Harold Aubrey Heward born, Hetton-le-Hole. (1932-34)

Defender signed from Herrington Swifts who made his Magpies debut in a 0-4 loss at Huddersfield Town in February 1933.

Making all five of his Newcastle appearances within a three month period, Heward signed for Bradford Park Avenue in August 1934.

He later played for Hartlepools United (for whom he debuted on his 25th birthday),   and Yeovil & Petters United.

1954 Alan Kennedy born, sunderland. (1971-78)

A member of United's beaten 1974 FA Cup Final side, who had made his senior team debut just over a year before in a home victory over Stoke City.

Also appearing in the 1976 League Cup final loss, left back Alan remained with United until the relegation season of 1977/78 before being sold to Liverpool for £330K.

And in over 350 first team games at Anfield, Alan picked up five league championships, four League Cups, three Charity Shields and two European Cups - scoring in both of the latter finals (one in the penalty shootout).

Moving on to his hometown club in 1985, Kennedy was in the mackem side famously beaten by Gillingham in the playoffs.

Later spells followed at Husqvarna (Sweden), Beerschot (Belgium), Boldklubben 1903 (Denmark) Hartlepool, Northwich Victoria, Grantham Town, Wigan, Colne Dynamoes,  Wrexham, Morecambe, Netherfield and Radcliffe Borough.

Kennedy finally retired from playing at the age of 40 with Barrow, working in the media and as an after-dinner speaker thereafter.

1970 Nikodimos Papavasiliou born, Limassol, Cyprus. (1993-94)

Cypriot international midfielder who moved to Tyneside from OFI Crete for a £120,000 fee during July 1993, making his bow in a pre-season game at Hartlepool and netting a penalty at Berwick Rangers a week later.

"Nicky" debuted in United's Premiership season opener at home to Spurs and whose major contribution to our side was providing the pass for Andy Cole to equalise at Old Trafford in his third outing.

However, his first team career in England would be over by late September 1993 - substituted during the home win over Sheffield Wednesday and replaced by Alex Mathie, who immediately netted.

Picking up an injury during a reserve game, Papavasiliou completed his national service in Cyprus and belatedly made a £25,000 return to OFI in December 1994.

Later moves took him to Apollon Limassol, Anorthosis Famagusta, Enosis Neon Paralimni and Olympiakos Nicosia - ending his playing days at APOEL Nicosia in 2003.

A managerial career taking in a clutch of Cypriot clubs began in 2006 with APEP Pitsilia, followed by Olympiakos Nicosia, (Cyprus) and a stint at OFI Crete.

Back in Cyprus with Olympiakos Nicosia again, Doxa Katokopia, Enosis Neon Paralimni, Olympiakos Nicosia again, Apollon Limassol and Ermis Aradippou, 2015 saw a switch to mainland Europe and Slovakians Slovan Bratislava.

Next came a diversion to Greece with the
Ergotelis and Panionios clubs before yet another relocation, this time to Egypt.

Beginning in with Wadi Degla SC in 2020, he later served rivals National Bank, Al Ittihad and El Mahalla - fitting in another Cypriot return with Famagusta.

By his 55th birthday though, he was between clubs yet again.

An eventful afternoon at Home Park saw Newcastle fall behind three times in the first half but quickly level on each occasion.

Having missed the opening two games of the season after asking to play for the reserves, Barrie Thomas returned to plunder his second hat trick in Newcastle colours.

A teatime downpour was blamed for a drop in attendance of almost 15,000 from the previous weekend at this Wednesday night game.

The only goal came when Albert Bennett sent a throw-in towards Ron McGarry, only for defender Barry Wagstaffe to reach it first - and inadvertently lob the ball over his own 'keeper, Alan Hodgkinson in the Gallowgate goal.

Wagstaff was playing in the same Blades side as his brother Tony.

The second tier Lions were full value for their victory, Newcastle-born, former mackem midfielder Brian Chambers prominent.

Just as it seemed an inspired first half display from United at Bath's Twerton Park would go unrewarded, Liam O'Brien hit a dipping shot from 25 yards that eluded Pirates 'keeper Brian Parkin.

Winger Franz Carr was in inspired form and Rovers resorted to switching full backs in an attempt to get anywhere near him. Mick Quinn added a deserved second after the break and more could have followed.

1997 Newcastle's game at Anfield was called off while the nation was called up to mourn the death of the future King's ex-wife.

Quite why postponing a match would ease the pain of the grieving masses was never fully explained, but David Mellor was later revealed as having made the decision, in his capacity as Football Task Force chief.

Going to a football match was possibly the best thing to do on a day like that - the telly was rubbish.... PS: rugby union fixtures were staged, including one featuring Will Carling.

2000 Full back Olivier Bernard joined United from Lyon. Following close on the departure of his countrymen, David Terrier and Lionel Perez, his arrival was greeted with something short of wild enthusiasm.

2004 Wayne Rooney joined Manchester United for somewhere around the £30m mark on transfer deadline day. Following Jonathan Woodgate's transfer to Real Madrid this left our Chairman's statement a few days earlier sounding a little hollow:

"Our recent record shows we can be trusted to deliver quality players. I'm not going to say too much at this stage but I think the fans will be pleasantly surprised at what results from the Woodgate deal."

"We didn't go into the Woodgate transfer without a long-term plan. All will be revealed soon."

Unless of course, he was referring to the Owen deal a year later....

2005 Michael Owen was paraded in front of 15,000 fans at SJP as a remarkable signing was celebrated by all associated with the club. Little did we know what lay ahead....

Quote of the day: "When it came down to Real Madrid or Newcastle there was no question in my mind."

The same day saw Nobby Solano return from Aston Villa, James Milner going the other way on loan. The day's other major transfer saw Jermaine Jenas join Spurs for £7m.

2006 Newcastle completed the deadline day capture of Antoine Sibierski from Manchester City for an undisclosed fee.

French-born midfielder/striker Sibierski was in the final year of his current contract with City and signed a one year deal.

2010
Newcastle reserves began their season with a 3-1 victory on wearyside in a match that they dominated, despite playing for almost an hour with just ten men.

Making his competitive debut for the Magpies was Sol Campbell, while what was a vaguely bonkers night included a straight red card for Xisco and goals from Nile Ranger, Peter Lovenkrands and Ryan Taylor.

2012 The transfer window closed with United retaining their existing squad, but failing to add any further reinforcements since the acquisition of Vurnon Anita.

With Europa League Group stage participation already assured, Newcastle's thin squad was going to be put to the test....

Over seven hours since last scoring a home goal, things looked bleak with less than five minutes to go at SJP.

At that point Hatem Ben Arfa stepped into the Fulham area for the umpteenth time, but for once resisted the temptation to try and dribble through the defence and instead cut infield to loop a shot that flew past 'keeper David Stockdale in the Gallowgate End goal.

2016 Spurs completed a deadline day deal for Moussa Sissoko at a staggering £30m - both clubs confirming the news around 40 minutes after the transfer window closed.

For much of the day Sissoko had looked likely to join Everton after they met United's asking price, before Spurs gazumped the Toffees.

It concluded a transfer window where no less than 45 NUFC deals were completed (including five contract extensions).

2017 T

After Roberto Firminio's leveller, Fabio Carvalho stabbed home from point blank range in the eighth of five minutes of time added
on by referee Andre Marriner.
