U21s:
Town Trophy triumph

Result:
Huddersfield Town 6 Newcastle U21s 2
Newcastle U21s made a losing start to their EFL
Trophy group stage games on Tuesday night against Huddersfield Town at what is
currently known as the Accu Stadium.
The League One hosts took just eight minutes to open the scoring
when defender Jack Whatmough headed in an inswinging corner from the
right.
Town went two ahead five minutes later; Marcus Harkness sending Adam
Harrison the wrong way from the penalty spot after Cathal Heffernan
was punished for pushing.
The green-clad Magpies gained a foothold in the tie three minutes
into first half added time, when a corner wasn't cleared and Scott
Bailey's goalbound shot took a wicked deflection that deceived home
'keeper Lee Nicholls.
However Huddersfield almost immediately restored their two goal
advantage; an attack down the right ending with Leo Castledine
converting a low cross towards the back post.
A change of ends brought no respite for incoming U21 coach Adam Lawrence,
who saw his new charges fall further behind to strikes from Joe
Taylor in the 47th and 51st minute.
Magpies defender Charlie McArthur then looked to turn home
another right wing cross into his own net to make it 1-6 seven
minutes into the second period.
Newcastle netted their second goal of the evening on 77 minutes
following good interplay between substitute Joe Brayson and Sean
Neave, the latter crossing for Dylan Charlton to fire home.
Team: Ad.Harrison, C.Thompson, Charlton, Heffernan, McArthur,
Pivas (Watts 55), Bailey, Harper, Neave (Wooster 88), Al.Harrison,
Seung-soo (Brayson 62). Subs n/u: Taylor, Yildiz, O'Donovan,
Waddani.
HTFC: Nicholls, Sorensen (Sway 54), Wallace, Whatmough,
Taylor (Radulovic 57), Harness (Alves 54), Roosken (Ashia 57),
Kasumu, Roughdan (Feeney 83), Castledine, Vost. Subs n/u:
Goodman, Wiles.
Booked: Kasumu
Referee: Scott Jackson
Crowd: 1,280 including 90 in the away section. PS:
Uninvolved for the Magpies on Tuesday was 19 year-old Norwegian
midfielder Travis Hernes, who has completed a season-long
loan switch to Dutch side Groningen.
Confirming the move, the Eredivisie side state that it includes a
purchase option at the end of the season.
Update:
Stockholm syndrome:
a sufferer speaks....
From the "say something like..." and "will this do?"
school of composition, former Newcastle player Alexander Isak
has taken to social media from Sweden with the following:
"I want to express my gratitude to my team mates, the staff, and
above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for
the three unforgettable years we shared together.
"Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place
where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the
journey from reaching the Champions League to winning the first
trophy in over 70 years.
"Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle.”

Update:
Eddie gets a six pack
As the dust settles on another mind-numbing transfer window,
it's worth cataloguing the inbound business Newcastle have completed -
despite well-publicised personnel issues in several off-field roles:
Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton)
Malick Thiaw (AC Milan)
Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest)
Jacob Ramsey (Aston Villa)
Nick Woltemade (Stuttgart)
Yoane Wissaa (Brentford)
Departing meanwhile* were:
Lloyd Kelly (Juventus)
Jamal Lewis (released)
Callum Wilson (released)
Sean Longstaff (Leeds United)
Isaac Hayden (released)
Martin Dubravka (Burnley)
Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville)
Matt Targett (Middlesbrough)
Garang Kuol (Sparta Prague)
Alexander Isak (Liverpool)
* we avoided the expression "off the books" as segments of the Vlachodimos
and Targett wages are still paid by NUFC.
Update:
#9 dream

Club statement, Monday night:
Newcastle United can confirm the transfer deadline day signing of
forward Yoane Wissa from Brentford for an undisclosed fee, subject
to Premier League approval.
Yoane will wear the number nine shirt for Newcastle United.
Yoane said: "I'm really happy to be here and to sign for one of
the biggest clubs in the Premier League.
"I'm very, very excited to put on the black and white shirt. I've
got dreams, I've got faith and now I will do my best to make it all
happen. I can't wait to get started."
Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe added: "Yoane is a player
who we have admired for some time and we're delighted to have him on
board.
"He brings proven Premier League quality, demonstrated not only by
his goalscoring output but also the crucial work he does for the
team.
"Yoane's style of play will excite our supporters and complement our
style of play - he has pace, power and an excellent work rate. He
immediately makes us stronger."
Brentford's statement confirming the departure of Wissa was
longer than Newcastle's for Isak (see below) but only because they
provided a seasonal rundown of his Bees career - with no gratitude
or good wishes expressed.
Wissa is in the DRC squad for World Cup qualifiers against South
Sudan (a) in Juba on Friday and Senegal (h) in Kinshasha on Tuesday
week.
He'll become the third Magpie to appear for DRC following Lomana
LuaLua and Chancel Mbemba.
Wissa's international commitments are then set to involve the African
Cup of Nations Final tournament staged in Morocco, with DRC's opener
on December 23rd.
That ends with the final on January 18th 2026. It's unclear
exactly when participating nations can insist on players leaving
their clubs ahead of the tournament.
He turns 29 on Wednesday and hasn't played a competitive game for
the Bees since last May, training ahead of all three PL fixtures
this season but remaining unselected by manager Keith Andrews.
Before that absence, Wissa had appeared in 137 of the 151 Premier
League games played by Brentford since he signed in August 2021 (he
arrived from Lorient after their season opener). Those 137 games (91
starts) yielded 45 PL goals.
Wissa issued a lengthy statement over the weekend claiming that
Brentford had backtracked on a previous written agreement allowing
him to leave if what he described as "a reasonable offer was
received."
United's interest in the player who scored 20 PL and cup goals
last season including two against the Magpies was strengthened after
failing to make progress on a move bringing Wolves striker Jorgen
Strand Larsen to SJP.
The Norwegian forward remained at Molineux and is set to face the
Magpies in their next game on Saturday week.
Update:
Anfield rat
Club statement, Monday night - the word is terse:
Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander
Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee.
The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad
in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.
(That record transfer fee has been reported as £125m plus £5m in
add-ons).
Update:
Osula stays
With the transfer of Alexander Isak already
sealed, deadline day brought speculation that a second striker
departure was in the offing, namely William Osula.
The 22 year-old was tipped to make a
permanent exit from Gallowgate, amid claims of a £28.5m bid from Bundesliga side Eintracht
Frankfurt and interest from Aston Villa.
However the player who has just received a maiden senior call-up to
the Danish squad will remain at Gallowgate.
One player leaving is Trevan Sanusi, who has completed a
season-long loan switch to French Ligue 1 side Lorient.
That
move that had been in some doubt when the 18 year-old winger was forced off during
Friday's U21 game against Birmingham City with a foot problem.
Update:
Rebel without a
clause
Three years to the day - and almost to the
minute that he scored his first Newcastle goal at Anfield - the
transfer of Alexander Isak to Liverpool was agreed on Sunday.
A club-record figure of £125m* is widely quoted, ending a saga that
began last May when the player and his agent began agitating to
engineer release from a contract that was agreed until 2028 without
any release clause.
Nobody comes out of this with any credit; be it the club who
reluctantly complied with Isak's wishes after failing to address the
situation quickly enough, or the one whose media acolytes willingly
did their dirty work for them.
* it's understood that Isak's previous club Real Sociedad are
contractually entitled to 10% of that fee.
2025/26:
Fixture updates
Now that confirmation of the eight Champions
League fixture dates has arrived, alterations to our domestic
fixture list should now follow in due course.
Here's our take on things - all still tbc:
Bournemouth (a) should move from Saturday September 20th to
Sunday September 21st as a result of scheduling the Barcelona (h) CL
game on the previous Thursday. The Sunday slot would also mean that
it's shown live on Sky.
Due to that Bournemouth (a) move, the Bradford City (h)
Carabao Cup home game will be played on Wednesday September 24th (or
possibly Thursday 25th). Regardless of when we face the Bantams, the
tie will be live on Sky.
Arsenal (h) remains on Sunday September 28th as both
ourselves and the Gunners play in the CL on the following Wednesday.
Nottingham Forest (h) was moved to Sunday October 5th as the
Tricky Trees play in the Europa League the previous Thursday.
Brighton (a) remains on Saturday October 18th as we play the
Benfica (h) CL game the following Tuesday.
The November PL TV fixtures are due for release on or by Wednesday
September 17th, with the following options:
West Ham (a) could be Saturday November 1st or Sunday
November 2nd - the Friday is unlikely as the Carabao Cup Fourth
Round is that week. The Monday slot wouldn't work as the Bilbao (h)
CL game is the following Wednesday.
Brentford (a) could be Saturday November 8th or Sunday
November 9th - the Friday wouldn't work due to the Bilbao (h) CL
game the previous Wednesday and there are no Monday games as the
international break commences.
Manchester City (h) has to be on Saturday November 22nd as
both ourselves and the Citizens play in the CL on the following
Tuesday.
Looking further ahead into 2026:
Aston Villa (h) has to move from Saturday January 24th to
Sunday January 25th as the Villans play in the Europa League the
previous Thursday. It cannot move to the Monday as we are in CL
action the following Wednesday.

will be moved.

the league stage of which replicates the initial six ties. That
means they don't play PSV Eindhoven or Paris SG.
Update:
Woltemade's a Mag

Newcastle have now confirmed the transfer of forward Nick Woltemade,
who joins from Bundesliga side Stuttgart for a club record fee that
is undisclosed, but exceeds the claimed £63m paid to Real Sociedad
for Alexander Isak in 2022.
He will wear squad number 27.
Standing six foot six inches tall, the 23 year-old
German international flew into Tyneside on Thursday evening and was
spotted inside SJP on Friday. He then turned up at Saturday's 0-0
draw with Leeds at Elland Road.
Woltemade scored 17 goals last season in all competitions after
completing a move from his hometown club Werder Bremen in 2024, when
he signed a four year contract.
That transfer followed his participation in the Euro U21 finals when
he finished as top scorer with six goals, but failed to find the net
in the final when Germany lost 2-3 to an England side including
Newcastle's Tino Livramento.

With three wins from their opening trio of league and cup games
so far this season, Newcastle U18s were at Thorp Arch on Saturday in
a fixture switched from Tyneside.
And the blue-clad visitors made an excellent start when Sam Alabi
shot home with only four minutes on the clock.
That advantage was wiped out on the hour by Callum Mills, only for
Newcastle to regain the lead thanks to a 62nd minute header by
substitute Isaac Moran from a corner.
The Magpies extended their advantage further when Henry
Johnson's low 75th effort from distance flew in via a post.
Within four minutes the Whites had replied when a loose ball was
forced home by midfielder Kenneth Mensah and they levelled
seven minutes from full time when a cross from the left was
deflected past George Mair by Aiden Thompson.
Team: Mair, Johnson, Goodbrand, Epia, Old (Moran 46), Finneran

Latest:
Kuol Czechs out
The departure of Garang Kuol was announced on Friday evening with
the Australian international winger making a permanent switch to
Sparta Prague for a nominal fee.
That reunites him with his former Magpies U21 coach Diarmuid
O'Carroll, who made the same move in June.
20-year old Kuol has signed a "long contract" with the Czechs
after failing to break into the first team squad during his two and
a half years on Tyneside.
He wasn't involved in Sunday's 3-1 home over Zlin.
The Egyptian-born player who settled in Australia joined United
from A-League side Central Coast Mariners in late 2022, arriving
early the following year and immediately beginning a loan spell in
Scotland with Hearts.
That did little to boost his reputation and a second temporary
departure from Gallowgate in August 2023 saw him enjoy even less
pitch time at Dutch side FC Volendam.
In between those two loan moves came a taste of senior football
in the black and white; playing in both post-season kickabouts in
Australia and scoring in the penalty shootout that defeated Spurs in
Melbourne.
Eight U21 league and cup goals last season failed to convince
Eddie Howe of his worth to the senior squad and his final outing for
the Magpies was a low-key shift against Gateshead in the National
League Cup last month.
The Magpies may have hit pay dirt with their speculative
acquisition of Yankuba Minteh, but the Kuol punt will go down in our
recent history as a misadventure.
Carabao Cup
:
Bantams in Toon
Newcastle begin the defence of their Carabao Cup title with a Third Round
home tie against League One Bradford City.
The scheduling of Newcastle's Champions League home game against Barcelona
on Thursday September 18th will result in the Premier League visit to
Bournemouth moving from Saturday 20th to Sunday 21st.
As a consequence, the Bantams will visit Gallowgate on Wednesday September
24th (theoretically it could also be on Thursday 25th, given that Newcastle
aren't back in PL action until Arsenal visit SJP on Sunday 28th).
Season ticket holders who signed up for the Carabao Cup home ticket scheme
will be charged £20 and £25 depending on their seating area. Payment will be
taken within seven days of the fixture date confirmation.
Graham Alexander's side reached the Third Round thanks to a 2-1 victory at
Blackburn Rovers and a 3-0 success at fellow Championship side Stoke City.
The Bantams currently sit third in League One, with four wins and two draws
from their opening six EFL fixtures.
This is the fourth time that the two sides have been paired in this
competition, the most recent meeting a 4-3 Third Round victory at Gallowgate
for Newcastle in 2000.
The Magpies lost a two-legged tie in the 1986/87 season - beaten 0-2 at
Odsal and winning 1-0 at SJP but got the better of Bradford in 1984/85,
following up a 3-1 victory on Tyneside with a 1-0 success at Valley Parade.

Magpies on temporary postings:
Aidan Harris (Coleraine):
Progress to the last four of the North West Senior Cup came thanks to a 2-0
home win over Newbuildings United on Tuesday. Goalkeeper Aidan remained on
the bench in order to give a local youngster his debut, but should be back
between the posts for Saturday's trip to Crusaders.
Matt Targett (Middlesbrough):
A winning start for the full back, brought off the bench at half time at home to Sheffield United in the Championship.
Targett supplied a clever pass for the only goal of the game, in what was his first second-tier outing
since May 2018 when he was in the Fulham side that won the promotion playoff final against Aston Villa at Wembley.
Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville):
An afternoon on the bench for the goalkeeper as Seville won 2-0 at Girona in
the Primera Liga on Saturday.
Joe White (Leyton Orient):
The midfielder was again nowhere to be seen on Saturday, as the O's lost 0-1
at home to Kevin Nolan's Northampton Town side in League One.
Antonio Cordero (KVC Westerlo):
An unused substitute spot for the Spanish teenager on Saturday, as his
current side were 2-0 winners at home to Royal Antwerp in the Belgian Pro
League.
Tyler Jones (Ashington):
A clean sheet for the 17 year-old custodian on Saturday, as the Northern Premier League Division One East
encounter with Blyth Town at Woodhorn Lane ended scoreless.
Trevan Sanusi (Lorient):

The new system is 24/24/48: 24
hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
purchase.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered
to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total.

2nd September |

Born Or Died:
1900 Robert McKay born, Govan, Scotland.
(1926-28)

Inside right who cost Newcastle £2,750 when he was persuaded
to leave Rangers - United reaping an instant return when he fired a debut hat
trick in a 5-2 home win over West Bromwich Albion.
1927 saw Bob add a First Division medal to the Scottish Cup one gained with
Morton some five years earlier.
And October of that year saw him gain a first (and only) international cap for
Scotland in a 2-2 draw with Wales at Wrexham.
Just over a year later however, he'd moved on to local rivals Sunderland - with
left back Bob Thomson coming the other way.
Almost inevitably he scored twice for his new club in a 5-2 derby victory at
Roker Park just days after joining the red and whites.
Bob later played for Charlton, Bristol Rovers, Newport County and had spells
managing Dundee United and Ballymena United.
Later scouting for Charlton, Bob had returned to his native Glasgow when his
death was recorded in May 1977.

1925 Ernie Taylor born, sunderland.
(1942-51)

A wartime signing from Hylton Colliery, diminutive inside
forward Ernie played for United in wartime football, his Royal Navy service as
a submariner also seeing him appear for Plymouth Argyle.
His competitive debut for the Magpies came in the FA Cup versus Barnsley in
1946 and he was part of United's 1951 FA Cup winning side before moving on to
Blackpool - where he repeated the feat at Wembley in 1953.
Taylor received international recognition later that year, but his first and
last England cap was the 3-6 home defeat by Hungary.
A transfer to Manchester United in the aftermath of the 1958 Munich Air
Disaster saw him reach a third final, but he had to settle for a runners-up
medal.
Ending his league career at his hometown club, Ernie played briefly for
Altrincham and then Derry City in Northern Ireland.
Emigrating to New Zealand he worked as a football coach before returning to
North West England and working for Vauxhall Motors.
Ernie was living in Birkenhead at the time of his death, in April 1985.

1953 Paul Cannell born, Newcastle.
(1972-78)
Centre forward who began his footballing career with the
mackems and played for England Schoolboys before moving to SJP.
Paul made his first team debut in a Texaco Cup against Ayr United at SJP in
September 1972, although he had to wait until March 1974 to make his
competitive league bow, replacing the absent Malcolm Macdonald.
However, it was only after the sale of Mac to Arsenal that Cannell became a
regular choice, scoring 12 league goals in 1976/77 - just two less than top
scorer Mickey Burns.
Having spent the close seasons of 1976 and 1977 playing in the North American
Soccer League with Washington Diplomats, Paul emigrated late in 1977 after
being declared surplus to requirements at Gallowgate by new manager Bill
McGarry.
Remaining out in the USA until 1981 and also played for the Memphis Rogues,
Detroit Express and Calgary Boomers (who took on the Memphis franchise in
1981).
Cannell returned to England in 1981 and played for North Shields, Mansfield
Town, Berwick Rangers and Blyth Spartans, leaving Croft Park at the end of the
1983/84 season.
Since then Paul has been connected to various local business ventures such as
pubs, nightclubs, discos, taxis and even a foray into quiz books. He later
became landlord of The Alexandra pub in North Shields.
Cannell released a biography in 2012 with a title that colourfully referred to
an expletive that rhymes with his name....
1982 Joey Barton born, Huyton.
(2007-11)
A boyhood Evertonian, midfielder Barton was with the Toffees as
a schoolboy before switching to Manchester City in 1999.
Making his first team debut for Kevin Keegan's City side against Bolton in
April 2003, Barton's first senior England cap was against Spain at Old Trafford
in April 2007.
Moving to SJP in a £5.8m deal three months later, Barton's first team debut
was delayed until October 2007 after breaking a bone in his foot in a
pre-season friendly at Carlisle.
His first Magpies goal came from the penalty spot at Fulham in December 2007
and he repeated that trick in a home game against West Bromwich Albion in
October 2008.
Within a month though he was sidelined again after clashing with Wigan's Lee
Cattermole, an abortive comeback ending with him limping off at Manchester City
in January 2009.
Barton began the 2009/10 season at SJP, despite seemingly playing his
last game for the club in a 0-3 loss at Liverpool the
previous May - seeing red for a ludicrous challenge on Xabi Alonso.
A post-match row with Shearer in the Anfield dressing room saw Barton
banned from the club, but he returned as a substitute in the opening
Championship game at West Bromwich Albion, by which time Al was a BBC pundit again.
That was despite a training ground spat with several team mates
and interim boss Chris Hughton just hours earlier.
Injury sidelined Barton yet again in September 2009, with a broken
metatarsal sidelining him until the following March - when he missed a penalty at Hartlepool
on his reserve comeback.
Reappearing for the last nine games of the promotion season, Joey dedicated a
free kick scored at Peterborough to the club's medical staff,
who had guided him through yet another dose of rehab.
United's Premier League return then saw him net the winning penalty in a
pre-season shootout against Deportivo (after missing one in normal
time). His his first Newcastle goal from open play was then a stunning
strike against Aston Villa.

In association with Caterpillar
The 6-0 win that day was enough to see him discard a
moustache he vowed to grow until United won their first game back
in the top flight - Barton shaving it off before post-game interviews.
After a decent season on the pitch, often captaining and leading the side to
some notable performances, Barton fell foul of the club's management by making
some very public statements about not being offered a new contract and the
club's transfer policy.
Barton criticised the departure
Kevin Nolan and Jose Enrique via twtter and was quickly transfer listed on
a "free".
Missing from the club's USA pre-season tour after being refused a visa due to
his criminal record (although holidaying there only weeks
earlier), Barton instead joined the reserves' tour of Holland.
After some temporary bridge-building, he was selected for the season-opener at
home to Arsenal - where he was instrumental in the dismissal of Gunners
striker, Gervinho.
What proved to be his final outing came in a 1-0 win at the mackems before
signing for
Premier League newcomers QPR and debuting against United.
Another chapter was written in the Barton biography when he was infamously sent
off in the season-closer at Manchester City.
Tangling with Carlos Tevez, he floored Sergio Aguero before attempting to
head-butt Vincent Kompany.
Banned for 12 matches at the start of the 2012/13 season, his QPR career seemed
effectively over with no squad number or training ground locker allocated at
the start of the season.
Joining Marseille on a season-long loan, Joey played 30 times for the French
side and boasted of winning a permanent deal there.
However, no agreement was reached and he returned to Loftus Road, featuring for
QPR in their first Championship game.
September 2013 saw Barton make his first playing return to SJP, donning black
and white again for a Newcastle Legends side who faced AC Milan Glorie in a
charity testimonial for Steve Harper.
Afforded a rousing reception when taking to the field, Barton proceeded to
boost his reputation on Tyneside by making his mark on a certain Milan player
called Di Canio....
Seeing his R's contract end at the end of 2014/15 with
the club relegated once more, Joey then trained with West Ham but was unable to
agree a deal.
August 2015 then saw him sign a twelve month deal at Championship side Burnley,
helping the Clarets return to the Premier League before making a slightly
left-field decision to join Glasgow Rangers.
He was suspended by Rangers after an argument with Andy Halliday and left in
November 2016, returning to Burnley.
However, an 18-month ban from football for breaking betting rules cut short his
time at Turf Moor, although he got the ban reduced by five months on appeal.
His final game came against Manchester United in April 2017 and once the ban
was up, he became the new manager of Fleetwood Town, confirming that "it
was the death of Joey Barton the player."
Barton left Fleetwood in January 2021 and six weeks later he took over as
manager of relegation-threatened Bristol Rovers.
However, he was unable to
reverse their fortunes and Rovers were relegated to League Two.
The 2021/22 season was rather better for the Pirates however, returning to
the third tier - partly due to the efforts of on-loan Magpie Elliot
Anderson.
Sacked by Rovers in October 2023 after an indifferent start to the season,
he hasn't returned to management.
Instead, Barton took to social media and podcasting, voicing his opinion on
topics including women's football - resulting in court appearances and libel
actions.
A charge of assaulting his wife was also proven, landing him with a
suspended prison sentence during 2025.

Kevin Keegan walked out on the club for the second time as
his relationship with Derek Llambias, Dennis Wise, Jeff
Vetere and Tony Jimenez completely broke down.
A
NUFC statement asserted that he had not been sacked and
was still part of the club's future, while an LMA
statement suggested that there was still a chance of
reconciliation.
That proved not to be the case and 12 months on, the two
parties faced each other in a court case that Keegan won.

United's sticky start to
the season continued with a desperate performance at
Brighton's Amex Stadium as Evan Ferguson's treble
ensured a miserable trip to the South coast.
Only a late finish from Callum Wilson gave the away support anything
to shout about, but by then those travelling fans were
making their own entertainment with a spirited and
lengthy rendition of "Is this the way to Barcelona....".
