U21s:
Town Trophy triumph

Huddersfield Town  6  Newcastle U21s  2

Match action is online here

Newcastle U21s made a losing start to their EFL Trophy group stage games on Tuesday night against Huddersfield Town at what is currently known as the Accu Stadium.

The League One hosts took just eight minutes to open the scoring when defender Jack Whatmough headed in an inswinging corner from the right.

Town went two ahead five minutes later; Marcus Harkness sending Adam Harrison the wrong way from the penalty spot after Cathal Heffernan was punished for pushing.

The green-clad Magpies gained a foothold in the tie three minutes into first half added time, when a corner wasn't cleared and Scott Bailey's goalbound shot took a wicked deflection that deceived home 'keeper Lee Nicholls.

(Inspection of the footage reveals that the vital touch came off the backside of Bailey's colleague Sean Neave).

However Huddersfield almost immediately restored their two goal advantage; an attack down the right ending with Leo Castledine converting a low cross towards the back post.

A change of ends brought no respite for incoming U21 coach Adam Lawrence, who saw his new charges fall further behind to strikes from Joe Taylor in the 47th and 51st minute.

Magpies defender Charlie McArthur then looked to turn home another right wing cross into his own net to make it 1-6 seven minutes into the second period.

Newcastle netted their second goal of the evening on 77 minutes following good interplay between substitute Joe Brayson and Sean Neave, the latter crossing for Dylan Charlton to fire home.

Team:
Ad.Harrison, C.Thompson, Charlton, Heffernan, McArthur, Pivas (Watts 55), Bailey, Harper, Neave (Wooster 88), Al.Harrison, Seung-soo (Brayson 62). Subs n/u: Taylor, Yildiz, O'Donovan, Waddani.

HTFC: Nicholls, Sorensen (Sway 54), Wallace, Whatmough, Taylor (Radulovic 57), Harness (Alves 54), Roosken (Ashia 57), Kasumu, Roughdan (Feeney 83), Castledine, Vost. Subs n/u: Goodman, Wiles.

Booked: Kasumu

Referee: Scott Jackson

Crowd: 1,280 including 90 in the away section.

PS: Uninvolved for the Magpies on Tuesday was 19 year-old Norwegian midfielder Travis Hernes, who has completed a season-long loan switch to Dutch side Groningen.

Confirming the move, the Eredivisie side state that it includes a purchase option at the end of the season.

Update:
Stockholm syndrome:
a sufferer speaks....

From the "say something like..." and "will this do?" school of composition, former Newcastle player Alexander Isak has taken to social media from Sweden with the following:

"I want to express my gratitude to my team mates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together.

"Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey from reaching the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years.

"Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle.”

It's widely claimed by cyber boffins that the opening two paragraphs of the statement were written by AI - that's artificial intelligence rather than Alexander Isak....

Update:
Eddie gets a six pack

As the dust settles on another mind-numbing transfer window, it's worth cataloguing the inbound business Newcastle have completed - despite well-publicised personnel issues in several off-field roles:

Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton)
Malick Thiaw (AC Milan)
Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest)
Jacob Ramsey (Aston Villa)
Nick Woltemade (Stuttgart)
Yoane Wissaa (Brentford)

Departing meanwhile* were:

Lloyd Kelly (Juventus)
Jamal Lewis (released)
Callum Wilson (released)
Sean Longstaff (Leeds United)
Isaac Hayden (released)
Martin Dubravka (Burnley)
Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville)
Matt Targett (Middlesbrough)
Garang Kuol (Sparta Prague)
Alexander Isak (Liverpool)

* we avoided the expression "off the books" as segments of the Vlachodimos and Targett wages are still paid by NUFC.

Update:
#9 dream

Club statement, Monday night:

Newcastle United can confirm the transfer deadline day signing of forward Yoane Wissa from Brentford for an undisclosed fee, subject to Premier League approval.

Yoane will wear the number nine shirt for Newcastle United.

Yoane said: "I'm really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

"I'm very, very excited to put on the black and white shirt. I've got dreams, I've got faith and now I will do my best to make it all happen. I can't wait to get started."

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe added: "Yoane is a player who we have admired for some time and we're delighted to have him on board.

"He brings proven Premier League quality, demonstrated not only by his goalscoring output but also the crucial work he does for the team.

"Yoane's style of play will excite our supporters and complement our style of play - he has pace, power and an excellent work rate. He immediately makes us stronger."

Brentford's statement confirming the departure of Wissa was longer than Newcastle's for Isak (see below) but only because they provided a seasonal rundown of his Bees career - with no gratitude or good wishes expressed.

He'll become the third Magpie to appear for DRC following Lomana LuaLua and Chancel Mbemba.

Wissa's international commitments are then set to involve the African Cup of Nations Final tournament staged in Morocco, with DRC's opener on December 23rd.

That ends with the final on January 18th 2026. It's unclear exactly when participating nations can insist on players leaving their clubs ahead of the tournament.

He turns 29 on Wednesday and hasn't played a competitive game for the Bees since last May, training ahead of all three PL fixtures this season but remaining unselected by manager Keith Andrews.

Before that absence, Wissa had appeared in 137 of the 151 Premier League games played by Brentford since he signed in August 2021 (he arrived from Lorient after their season opener). Those 137 games (91 starts) yielded 45 PL goals.

Wissa issued a lengthy statement over the weekend claiming that Brentford had backtracked on a previous written agreement allowing him to leave if what he described as "a reasonable offer was received."

United's interest in the player who scored 20 PL and cup goals last season including two against the Magpies was strengthened after failing to make progress on a move bringing Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen to SJP.

The Norwegian forward remained at Molineux and is set to face the Magpies in their next game on Saturday week.

Update:
Anfield rat

Club statement, Monday night - the word is terse:

Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee.

The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.

(That record transfer fee has been reported as £125m plus £5m in add-ons).

Update:
Osula stays

With the transfer of Alexander Isak already sealed, deadline day brought speculation that a second striker departure was in the offing, namely William Osula.

The 22 year-old was tipped to make a permanent exit from Gallowgate, amid claims of a £28.5m bid from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt and interest from Aston Villa.

However the player who has just received a maiden senior call-up to the Danish squad will remain at Gallowgate.

One player leaving is Trevan Sanusi, who has completed a season-long loan switch to French Ligue 1 side Lorient.

That move that had been in some doubt when the 18 year-old winger was forced off during Friday's U21 game against Birmingham City with a foot problem.

Update:
Rebel without a clause

Three years to the day - and almost to the minute that he scored his first Newcastle goal at Anfield - the transfer of Alexander Isak to Liverpool was agreed on Sunday.

A club-record figure of £125m* is widely quoted, ending a saga that began last May when the player and his agent began agitating to engineer release from a contract that was agreed until 2028 without any release clause.

Nobody comes out of this with any credit; be it the club who reluctantly complied with Isak's wishes after failing to address the situation quickly enough, or the one whose media acolytes willingly did their dirty work for them.

* it's understood that Isak's previous club Real Sociedad are contractually entitled to 10% of that fee.

2025/26:
Fixture updates

Here's our take on future changes - all still tbc:

Arsenal (h) remains on Sunday September 28th as both ourselves and the Gunners play in the CL on the following Wednesday.

Nottingham Forest (h) was moved to Sunday October 5th as the Tricky Trees play in the Europa League the previous Thursday.

Brighton (a) remains on Saturday October 18th as we play the Benfica (h) CL game the following Tuesday.

The November PL TV fixtures are due for release on or by Wednesday September 17th, with the following options:

West Ham (a) could be Saturday November 1st or Sunday November 2nd - the Friday is unlikely as the Carabao Cup Fourth Round is that week. The Monday slot wouldn't work as the Bilbao (h) CL game is the following Wednesday.

Brentford (a) could be Saturday November 8th or Sunday November 9th - the Friday wouldn't work due to the Bilbao (h) CL game the previous Wednesday and there are no Monday games as the international break commences.

Manchester City (h) has to be on Saturday November 22nd as both ourselves and the Citizens play in the CL on the following Tuesday.

Looking further ahead into 2026:

Aston Villa (h) has to move from Saturday January 24th to Sunday January 25th as the Villans play in the Europa League the previous Thursday. It cannot move to the Monday as we are in CL action the following Wednesday.

PS: The Magpies will play in the U19 Youth League, the league stage of which replicates the initial six ties. That means they don't face PSV Eindhoven or Paris SG.

Update:
Woltemade's a Mag

Newcastle have now confirmed the transfer of forward Nick Woltemade, who joins from Bundesliga side Stuttgart for a club record fee that is undisclosed, but exceeds the claimed £63m paid to Real Sociedad for Alexander Isak in 2022.

He will wear squad number 27.

Standing six foot six inches tall, the 23 year-old German international flew into Tyneside on Thursday evening and was spotted inside SJP on Friday. He then turned up at Saturday's 0-0 draw with Leeds at Elland Road.

Woltemade scored 17 goals last season in all competitions after completing a move from his hometown club Werder Bremen in 2024, when he signed a four year contract.

That transfer followed his participation in the Euro U21 finals when he finished as top scorer with six goals, but failed to find the net in the final when Germany lost 2-3 to an England side including Newcastle's Tino Livramento.

U18s:
Youngsters held

Leeds United U18s  3  Newcastle U18s  3

With three wins from their opening trio of league and cup games so far this season, Newcastle U18s were at Thorp Arch on Saturday in a fixture switched from Tyneside.

And the blue-clad visitors made an excellent start when Sam Alabi shot home with only four minutes on the clock.

That advantage was wiped out on the hour by Callum Mills, only for Newcastle to regain the lead thanks to a 62nd minute header by substitute Isaac Moran from a corner.

The Magpies extended their advantage further when Henry Johnson's low 75th effort from distance flew in via a post.

Within four minutes the Whites had replied when a loose ball was forced home by midfielder Kenneth Mensah and they levelled seven minutes from full time when a cross from the left was deflected past George Mair by Aiden Thompson.

Team: Mair, Johnson, Goodbrand, Epia, Old (Moran 46), Finneran (O'Donovan 46), Waddani, Alabi, Hutchison (Bloomer 60), Wooster, Seldon (Pinnington 81).

Latest:
Kuol Czechs out

The departure of Garang Kuol was announced on Friday evening with the Australian international winger making a permanent switch to Sparta Prague for a nominal fee.

That reunites him with his former Magpies U21 coach Diarmuid O'Carroll, who made the same move in June.

20-year old Kuol has signed a "long contract" with the Czechs after failing to break into the first team squad during his two and a half years on Tyneside.

He wasn't involved in Sunday's 3-1 home over Zlin.

The Egyptian-born player who settled in Australia joined United from A-League side Central Coast Mariners in late 2022, arriving early the following year and immediately beginning a loan spell in Scotland with Hearts.

That did little to boost his reputation and a second temporary departure from Gallowgate in August 2023 saw him enjoy even less pitch time at Dutch side FC Volendam.

In between those two loan moves came a taste of senior football in the black and white; playing in both post-season kickabouts in Australia and scoring in the penalty shootout that defeated Spurs in Melbourne.

Eight U21 league and cup goals last season failed to convince Eddie Howe of his worth to the senior squad and his final outing for the Magpies was a low-key shift against Gateshead in the National League Cup last month.

The Magpies may have hit pay dirt with their speculative acquisition of Yankuba Minteh, but the Kuol punt will go down in our recent history as a misadventure.

Magpies on temporary postings:

Aidan Harris (Coleraine):
Progress to the last four of the North West Senior Cup came thanks to a 2-0 home win over Newbuildings United on Tuesday. Goalkeeper Aidan remained on the bench in order to give a local youngster his debut, but should be back between the posts for Saturday's trip to Crusaders.

Matt Targett (Middlesbrough):

A winning start for the full back, brought off the bench at half time at home to Sheffield United in the Championship.

Targett supplied a clever pass for the only goal of the game, in what was his first second-tier outing since May 2018 when he was in the Fulham side that won the promotion playoff final against Aston Villa at Wembley.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville):
An afternoon on the bench for the goalkeeper as Seville won 2-0 at Girona in the Primera Liga on Saturday.

Joe White (Leyton Orient):
The midfielder was again nowhere to be seen on Saturday, as the O's lost 0-1 at home to Kevin Nolan's Northampton Town side in League One.

Antonio Cordero (KVC Westerlo):
An unused substitute spot for the Spanish teenager on Saturday, as his current side were 2-0 winners at home to Royal Antwerp in the Belgian Pro League.

Tyler Jones (Ashington):
A clean sheet for the 17 year-old custodian on Saturday, as the Northern Premier League Division One East encounter with Blyth Town at Woodhorn Lane ended scoreless.

Trevan Sanusi (Lorient):
Marseille (a) Ligue 1, Friday, Sep 12.

Travis Hernes (Groningen)
Utrecht (a) Eredivisie, Sunday Sep 14.

The prize in our latest competition was a Shearer bucket hat or a Robledo T-shirt and to stand a chance of winning we asked which former Magpie played for Liverpool the last time we won a PL game against them in 2015.

It was of course James Milner and the winning entry came from Peter Cowell.

The new system is 24/24/48: 24 hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to purchase.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact those applicants directly.

On This Day in History
3rd September

Born Or Died:

1948 Death of Jack Peart, 60.
(1912-13)

1949 John Hopkinson born, Gateshead.
(1964-66)

Centre half who caught United's eye while playing for Gateshead Boys and Durham Schoolboys, joining the N's youth side.

John later moved on to Doncaster Rovers, Rotherham United and Worksop Town.

1966 Danny Olson
born, North Shields. (1985)

Midfielder signed by Ipswich Town from Wallsend Boys Club who left Portman Road in 1985 without playing a senior game.

Given a trial by Newcastle, Danny was fielder in a first team pre-season game at Scarborough that August.

Later with Darlington, Carlisle United and Colchester United, Olson joined Norwegian club Kongsberg IF before returning to his native North East with North Shields, West Allotment Celtic and Morpeth Town.

Olson later coached and managed local sides including Bedlington Terriers, Alnwick Town, West Auckland Town, Washington, Seaton Delaval and Rothbury.

1977 Erik Olof Mellberg
born, Gullspang, Sweden. (1997)

File under "another one that got away".....

Reviewing players scouted in his previous job at Rangers, newly-installed Magpies boss Kenny Dalglish brought 19 year-old Erik to Tyneside on trial in early 1997.

The Swedish defender was banned by his club Degerfors IF from playing any games and quickly returned home, although a £1m move was claimed by The Chronicle.

Fast forward to June 2001 and Mellberg was a full Swedish international who had played for AIK Stockholm and Racing Santander - sold by the Spaniards to Premier League Aston Villa for £5m.

Seven seasons at Villa Park saw him made club captain and become a popular figure, scoring a rare goal against United in 2004.

Olof subsequently played for Juventus (Italy), Olympiakos (Greece), Villarreal (Spain) and FC Copenhagen (Denmark), in addition to winning over 100 full caps.

Retiring in 2014 he later coached at IF Brommapojkarna (Sweden), Fremad Amager (Denmark), Helsingborgs IF and Brommapojkarna (both Sweden).

In November 2024 Mellberg took charge of MLS side St. Louis City but was fired six months later after a poor run of results.

1989 Jonny Godsmark
born, Guidepost.
(2006-10)

Winger who announced his arrival with two goals in an FA Youth Cup tie against Manchester City at SJP in March 2006.

A reserve bow came in the Northumberland Senior Cup later that year against Walker Central and he appeared from the bench for a youthful United senior XI during a kickabout at Hull City in August 2007.

A year later Godsmark was named on the bench by Kevin Keegan for a number of friendlies, but wasn't called into action.

Signing a professional contract in 2008, a lack of first team chances saw him loaned out to Hereford United in August 2009 only to sustain a broken hand.

Playing for Ashington, Godsmark made a playing comeback from a broken leg in 2012 but a repeat injury in the colours of Whitley Bay four years later forced his retirement.

1996 Yoane Wissa born, Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, France.
(2025-present)

United's latest number 9 was finally signed in the closing minutes of the summer 2025 transfer window, having agitated to leave former club Brentford for some weeks in a not dissimilar manner to his Anfield-bound predecessor at SJP, Alexander Isak.

Beginning his senior career at French second tier side LB Chateauroux in 2015, Wissa was signed by Ligue 1 outfit Angers the following year, but spent most of his time there on loan at Laval and Ajaccio.

Making a permanent switch to Lorient during the 2017/18 season, he helped them gain promotion in 2020, leaving the following season after adding 10 Ligue 1 goals to his 25 in the Second Division.

That form had resulted in a maiden call-up to the DR Congo side and attracted the interest of newly-promoted Brentford, who paid a reported £8.5m for him.

Four Premier League seasons at the Bees brought him 45 goals in that competition - 19 in the 2024/25 campaign including one to home to Newcastle for the second time in barely six months. He also netted in his side's Carabao Cup defeat at Gallowgate.

Announcing his intention to follow manager Thomas Frank and fellow top goalscorer Bryan Mbeumo out of the Gtech Stadium that summer, Wissa returned from a pre-season training camp in Portugal but did then return to the squad without being selected for any of the opening three PL fixtures by manager Keith Andrews.

A third offer by Newcastle reported to be £55m was accepted by the Bees and the player drove to Tyneside to become the club's sixth major signing of the window - emulating fellow former DRC internationals Lomana LuaLua and Chancel Mbemba.

United began their first-ever season in the top flight following work to level off the notorious sloping pitch at Gallowgate.

And sadly, confirmation that they were no longer such an invincible force on home turf wasn't long in coming against a Wolves side who had finished third the season before.

The Sporting Life scribe concluded that United "were completely outclassed for both combination and pace" as they conceded three times in the opening half hour.

There were debuts for William Higgins and Matt Kingsley, while United were without James Jackson and Joe Rogers due to injuries sustained in a bruising friendly against the mackems days earlier.

1993 Future Magpie Keith Gillespie moved from Manchester United to Wigan Athletic on loan, going to play eight times.

1994 42 years after the last time they used it as a home ground, Gateshead FC played a competitive game at SJP.

Unable to use the International Stadium for a Conference fixture with Yeovil Town due to an athletics event, the Tynesiders were given use of SJP as a thank you for letting United's reserve side regularly play over the river.

2,734 fans saw the Glovers win 3-0, with a trio of ex-Magpies in the Gateshead XI - John Watson, Jeff Wrightson and David Robinson.

1996 Midfielder Chris Holland became the latest United youngster to be loaned out, joining Birmingham City. The move was later made permanent at a cost of £600K.

1997 Having not fielded a reserve side the previous season in protest at the stadium criteria imposed, United played their first fixture in Pontins League Division Three against Doncaster Rovers.

Despite the unfashionable opposition, SJP saw 10,110 fans turn out and the kick-off had to be delayed 30 minutes. Ian Rush scored twice and Paul Arnison got the third in a 3-0 home victory.

2003 A United XI played a fundraiser for the Mary Hayton Cancer Research UK Memorial Fund at Chester-le-Street Riverside against Sacriston Working Man's Club.

Kitman Ray Thompson, Physio James Haycock, Martin Brittain (2), Andy Ferrell, Lewis Guy and Peter Ramage all netted in a 7-0 win.

2004 Rumours on Bobby Robson's successor as Newcastle boss had Ottmar Hitzfeld flying in, Alan Shearer saying he was too young and Steve Bruce continuing to be linked. Bookies still offered 50/1 on Graeme Souness....

2007 An excellent 3-0 victory for Lee Clark's Reserve side against the previous season's Champions, Bolton, at St. James' Park.

Goals from James Troisi, Darren Lough and birthday boy Jonny Godsmark did the damage, the latter scoring from the spot after he was fouled by Trotters 'keeper Al Habsi, who was red-carded.

2008 Speculation was rife that one of the major obstacles to Kevin Keegan remaining as manager was to be removed - the departure of Dennis Wise from SJP. That was soon dampened by a club statement that the situation remained unchanged though.

Various sources claimed that different transfer -related events triggered the rows: the sale of James Milner, attempts to flog Joey Barton and Michael Owen, claims that all of the squad were for sale and a failure to sign players in positions identified by KK as priorities.

What seemed beyond question was that one of the two would go.

2012 Having begun the new U21 reserve league season by scoring six times against Spurs, Newcastle went goal crazy again, thrashing Stoke City 5-1 on the road.

Brad Inman scored a hat trick, Marcus Maddison and JJ Hooper netted and Adam Campbell was denied from the penalty spot.

VAR played a pivotal role in denying United victory at SJP, after Joe Willock was shoved in the box by Tyrick Mitchell and the ball ended up in the Leazes End net.

VAR official Lee Mason sent referee Michael Salisbury to the pitchside monitor and he unbelievably agreed that Willock was guilty of a foul and ruled out the goal - only for the SJP big screen to then replay the video, with the shove on Willock clearly evident.
