Update:
New CEO

NUFC confirmed on Thursday that their search for a CEO had ended with the installation of Toronto-born David "Hoppy" Hopkinson:

Newcastle United are delighted to announce the appointment of David Hopkinson as the club's new Chief Executive Officer.

David officially joins the club on Friday, 5th September and will undertake a comprehensive handover process supported by outgoing CEO Darren Eales, who steps down from the position for health reasons.

David brings more than 25 years of senior executive leadership and commercial expertise across three countries, delivering results for some of the world's most iconic and valuable sporting organisations.

David joins Newcastle United after serving as President and Chief Operating Officer at Madison Square Garden Sports in the United States, where he led the business operations of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers.

Both are among the most valuable franchises in the National Basketball Association and National Hockey League respectively, and compete at the world-renowned Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Previously, as Global Head of Partnerships at Real Madrid, David served on the executive team as they cemented their place as one of the world's most valuable football clubs.

Earlier, he spent over two decades at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment as Chief Commercial Officer, overseeing commercial activities for the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA's Toronto Raptors.

David said: "I am incredibly honoured to join Newcastle United at such an exciting time in the club's history.

"This club represents something truly special. It has extraordinary history and heritage, incredibly passionate supporters, and ownership, players and staff who are committed to excellence.

"Having worked with iconic teams across different countries, I understand what it takes to build sustainable success at the highest levels of global sport.

"I greatly admire what has been achieved by the club so far, and I am excited and motivated by what is ahead as we strive to position Newcastle United among the world's elite clubs."

Newcastle United chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, said: "We are delighted to welcome David to Newcastle United.

"David is an outstanding executive whose track record across global sport and entertainment speaks for itself.

"His experience and strategic capabilities will be invaluable as we continue to build on the club's presence locally and grow it globally on and off the pitch.

"David's leadership will be critical as we build upon what we have already achieved since the acquisition towards an exciting future and sustainable success.

"I would like to personally thank Darren Eales for his exceptional work and leadership, as well as his friendship, over the last three years."

Director Jamie Reuben added: "David's arrival as CEO comes at a crucial time for the club and I am confident that he will prove to be an excellent fit for the role.

"He brings a wealth of experience in leadership positions at some of the biggest names in world sport, with an incredibly strong foundation to build upon."

Ex-Mag:
Barrie Thomas RIP

The death of former Magpie Barrie Thomas has been announced, at the age of 88.

Barrie was a centre forward who worked down the mines before signing for Leicester City, only for national service to halt his progress.

Joining Mansfield Town before moving on to Scunthorpe United in 1959, Thomas was top scorer in the Football League with 30 goals in 22 games when fellow Second Division side Newcastle bid a record £45,000 for him in early 1962.

The Iron opted to cash in and a deal was concluded with John McGuigan also moving from Gallowgate to the Old Showground - while both Leeds United and Manchester United made their interest known.

Debuting in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at St. James' Park, Thomas first found the net in his third game - away at Swansea - and Walter Winterbottom quickly called him up to an England training session, although he failed to make the 1962 World Cup squad.

However,
his time at SJP was blighted by injury and criticism from some fans and colleagues and while netting hat tricks against Boro, Plymouth and Rotherham, he failed to fire his side to promotion.

Losing his place to Ron McGarry, Barrie reluctantly returned to Scunthorpe early in 1964. His scoring touch remained despite fitness issues and as Newcastle were celebrating promotion the following May, he netted five as the Iron beat Luton Town 8-1.

Injury ended his playing career at Barnsley, after which he had a spell managing local non-league side Measham Swifts.

2025/26:
Bournemouth (a) set

Belated confirmation that United's Premier League visit to Bournemouth has been rescheduled as a reflection of their Champions League fixtures has now appeared.

The Magpies will visit the Vitality Stadium for a 2pm kick-off on Sunday September 21st, live on Sky Sports.

As away tickets have already gone on sale for this fixture before the rescheduled date was announced, anyone now unable to attend is entitled to a refund from NUFC.

The club say that unsuccessful ballot members will be contacted by them and offered any returned tickets.

PS: For anyone used to using Pokesdown* station for this game, Sunday engineering work affects trains using that route but Bournemouth services are unaffected.

*Pokesdown remains open and trains will run to and from Bournemouth, but the direct route from Pokesdown to London via Southampton has a partial bus replacement.

Carabao Cup :
Bradford City (h) set

Newcastle begin the defence of their Carabao Cup title with a Third Round tie against League One Bradford City at SJP, now confirmed as a 7.45pm kick-off on Wednesday September 24th. That will be shown live on Sky Sports+

ST holders in the Carabao Cup home ticket scheme will be charged £20 and £25 depending on their seating area. That payment will be taken on Friday September 5th.

2025/26:
CL squad announced

The UEFA website lists Newcastle's squad "A list" for the upcoming Champions League campaign as follows:

Pope, Ramsdale, Trippier, Botman, Schar, Thiaw, Krafth, Livramento, Burn, Joelinton, Tonali, Willock, Guimaraes, Ramsey, Wissa, Gordon, Barnes, Osula, Elanga, J.Murphy, Woltemade.

That's a 21 man selection - four short of the maximum permitted 25 due to eligibility criteria - and omits both Jamaal Lascelles and John Ruddy.

The "B list" selection doesn't need to submitted to UEFA until the day before each tie and can include an unlimited number of players born after January 1st 2004.

In Newcastle's case, "B list" inclusions can include Lewis Hall, Lewis Miley, Alex Murphy and any U21 and academy players.

Update:
Stockholm syndrome:
a sufferer speaks....

From the "say something like..." and "will this do?" school of composition, former Newcastle player Alexander Isak has taken to social media from Sweden with the following:

"I want to express my gratitude to my team mates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together.

"Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey from reaching the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years.

"Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle.”

It's widely claimed by cyber boffins that the opening two paragraphs of the statement were written by AI - that's artificial intelligence rather than Alexander Isak....

Update:
Eddie gets a six pack

As the dust settles on another mind-numbing transfer window, it's worth cataloguing the inbound business Newcastle have completed - despite well-publicised personnel issues in several off-field roles:

Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton)
Malick Thiaw (AC Milan)
Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest)
Jacob Ramsey (Aston Villa)
Nick Woltemade (Stuttgart)
Yoane Wissaa (Brentford)

Departing meanwhile* were:

Lloyd Kelly (Juventus)
Jamal Lewis (released)
Callum Wilson (released)
Sean Longstaff (Leeds United)
Isaac Hayden (released)
Martin Dubravka (Burnley)
Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville)
Matt Targett (Middlesbrough)
Garang Kuol (Sparta Prague)
Alexander Isak (Liverpool)

* we avoided the expression "off the books" as segments of the Vlachodimos and Targett wages are still paid by NUFC.

Update:
#9 dream

Club statement, Monday night:

Newcastle United can confirm the transfer deadline day signing of forward Yoane Wissa from Brentford for an undisclosed fee, subject to Premier League approval.

Yoane will wear the number nine shirt for Newcastle United.

Yoane said: "I'm really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

"I'm very, very excited to put on the black and white shirt. I've got dreams, I've got faith and now I will do my best to make it all happen. I can't wait to get started."

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe added: "Yoane is a player who we have admired for some time and we're delighted to have him on board.

"He brings proven Premier League quality, demonstrated not only by his goalscoring output but also the crucial work he does for the team.

"Yoane's style of play will excite our supporters and complement our style of play - he has pace, power and an excellent work rate. He immediately makes us stronger."

Brentford's statement confirming the departure of Wissa was longer than Newcastle's for Isak (see below) but only because they provided a seasonal rundown of his Bees career - with no gratitude or good wishes expressed.

He'll become the third Magpie to appear for DRC following Lomana LuaLua and Chancel Mbemba.

Wissa's international commitments are then set to involve the African Cup of Nations Final tournament staged in Morocco, with DRC's opener on December 23rd.

That ends with the final on January 18th 2026. It's unclear exactly when participating nations can insist on players leaving their clubs ahead of the tournament.

He turns 29 on Wednesday and hasn't played a competitive game for the Bees since last May, training ahead of all three PL fixtures this season but remaining unselected by manager Keith Andrews.

Before that absence, Wissa had appeared in 137 of the 151 Premier League games played by Brentford since he signed in August 2021 (he arrived from Lorient after their season opener). Those 137 games (91 starts) yielded 45 PL goals.

Wissa issued a lengthy statement over the weekend claiming that Brentford had backtracked on a previous written agreement allowing him to leave if what he described as "a reasonable offer was received."

United's interest in the player who scored 20 PL and cup goals last season including two against the Magpies was strengthened after failing to make progress on a move bringing Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen to SJP.

The Norwegian forward remained at Molineux and is set to face the Magpies in their next game on Saturday week.

Update:
Anfield rat

Club statement, Monday night - the word is terse:

Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee.

The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.

(That record transfer fee has been reported as £125m plus £5m in add-ons).

Update:
Osula stays

With the transfer of Alexander Isak already sealed, deadline day brought speculation that a second striker departure was in the offing, namely William Osula.

The 22 year-old was tipped to make a permanent exit from Gallowgate, amid claims of a £28.5m bid from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt and interest from Aston Villa.

However the player who has just received a maiden senior call-up to the Danish squad will remain at Gallowgate.

One player leaving is Trevan Sanusi, who has completed a season-long loan switch to French Ligue 1 side Lorient.

That move that had been in some doubt when the 18 year-old winger was forced off during Friday's U21 game against Birmingham City with a foot problem.

Update:
Rebel without a clause

Three years to the day - and almost to the minute that he scored his first Newcastle goal at Anfield - the transfer of Alexander Isak to Liverpool was agreed on Sunday.

A club-record figure of £125m* is widely quoted, ending a saga that began last May when the player and his agent began agitating to engineer release from a contract that was agreed until 2028 without any release clause.

Nobody comes out of this with any credit; be it the club who reluctantly complied with Isak's wishes after failing to address the situation quickly enough, or the one whose media acolytes willingly did their dirty work for them.

* it's understood that Isak's previous club Real Sociedad are contractually entitled to 10% of that fee.

2025/26:
Fixture updates

Here's our take on future changes - all still tbc:

Arsenal (h) remains on Sunday September 28th as both ourselves and the Gunners play in the CL on the following Wednesday.

Nottingham Forest (h) was moved to Sunday October 5th as the Tricky Trees play in the Europa League the previous Thursday.

Brighton (a) remains on Saturday October 18th as we play the Benfica (h) CL game the following Tuesday.

The November PL TV fixtures are due for release on or by Wednesday September 17th, with the following options:

West Ham (a) could be Saturday November 1st or Sunday November 2nd - the Friday is unlikely as the Carabao Cup Fourth Round is that week. The Monday slot wouldn't work as the Bilbao (h) CL game is the following Wednesday.

Brentford (a) could be Saturday November 8th or Sunday November 9th - the Friday wouldn't work due to the Bilbao (h) CL game the previous Wednesday and there are no Monday games as the international break commences.

Manchester City (h) has to be on Saturday November 22nd as both ourselves and the Citizens play in the CL on the following Tuesday.

Looking further ahead into 2026:

Aston Villa (h) has to move from Saturday January 24th to Sunday January 25th as the Villans play in the Europa League the previous Thursday. It cannot move to the Monday as we are in CL action the following Wednesday.

Leeds United U18s  3  Newcastle U18s  3

With three wins from their opening trio of league and cup games so far this season, Newcastle U18s were at Thorp Arch on Saturday in a fixture switched from Tyneside.

And the blue-clad visitors made an excellent start when Sam Alabi shot home with only four minutes on the clock.

That advantage was wiped out on the hour by Callum Mills, only for Newcastle to regain the lead thanks to a 62nd minute header by substitute Isaac Moran from a corner.

The Magpies extended their advantage further when Henry Johnson's low 75th effort from distance flew in via a post.

Within four minutes the Whites had replied when a loose ball was forced home by midfielder Kenneth Mensah and they levelled seven minutes from full time when a cross from the left was deflected past George Mair by Aiden Thompson.

The new system is 24/24/48: 24 hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to purchase.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact those applicants directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

On This Day in History
4th September

Born Or Died:

1910 Errington Ridley Liddell "Ike" Keen born, Walker. (1926-30)

Tyneside-born defender who was a product of Newcastle's Swifts (the academy side of its day) but played just one first team game - a 2-5 home loss to Derby County in 1930.

However, the opposition signed "Ike" soon afterwards (as part of a deal for striker Harry Bedford) and he went on to play 237 games for the Rams in an eight year period.

Capped four times by England while at the Baseball Ground, Keen later briefly became player manager of Chelmsford Town before joining Colchester United.

Player manager of Hereford United at the start of WW2, Keen guested for Notts County, Rochdale, Everton, Fulham, Millwall, Liverpool, Lincoln City, Charlton and Leeds.

Post-war, Ike managed Bacup Borough, Hull City and Swedish side Norrkoping before coaching the Egyptian football team at the 1948 London Olympic Games.

Working in Hong Kong, he also managed Turkish side Besiktas before returning to live in Derby.

Ike's death was recorded in London during 1984.

1928 Death of James Raine, 42.
(1905-06)

1940 Jimmy Gibson born, Belfast.
(1959-61)

Striker who arrived at SJP from Linfield on the recommendation of Jackie Milburn and made his first team debut in a 3-1 home victory over West Ham United two months later, in March 1959.

However he would have to bide his time in the reserves until September 1960 gave him a second chance of senior action, scoring in a 2-0 away at Nottingham Forest.

Gibson joined Cambridge United on a free transfer ahead of the 1961/62 season and moved on to Luton Town in 1965.

He later extended his career in the USA with spells at Chicago Mustangs, University of Wisconsin, Bavarian Soccer Club and Racine Soccer Club.

Gibson then became a soccer coach at the University of Wisconsin.

1941 George Dalton born, West Moor.
(1958-67)

Left half who later converted to a full back, coming through the ranks at United to make a first team debut in our first-ever League Cup tie - a 1-4 loss at Colchester during October 1960.

George then marked his first league outing by registering an own goal after just six minutes of a 3-5 loss at Leicester in February 1961.

Becoming a more regular starter the following season after United suffered relegation, a broken leg suffered in a tackle with Johnny Giles of Leeds at Elland Road in March 1964 was to halt Dalton's career.

A playing return came two years later, but George made just a senior appearance in the the 1966/67 season before joining Third Division Brighton on a free transfer.

Hanging up his boots in 1970, George later served both Birmingham City and Coventry City as physiotherapist - attending to City's David Busst at Old Trafford after the horror injury that ended his career in April 1996.

Following his retirement, George returned to live on his native Tyneside.

1966 John Beresford born, Sheffield.
(1992-98)

Signed from Portsmouth for £650K in July 1992, left back Beresford played 42 league games in our successful promotion season, netting once, against former club Barnsley.

However, he only became a Magpie after a move from Fratton Park to Liverpool stalled following a problem that showed up in his Anfield medical.

Bez was a first team regular for Kevin Keegan in the Premier League - with one memorable spat seeing him dragged off the field in a home game against Aston Villa in April 1996.

We collared him in 2000 and he told us about that incident and plenty more besides here.

The highlights of his Magpies career arguably took place under the guidance of Dalglish however - when United beat Croatia Zagreb to qualify for the Champions League.

Bez appeared in both games, scoring twice in a 2-1 win at SJP - and after appearing in the memorable 3-2 victory over Barcelona, he was on target again in Kiev.

A final score of 2-2 in front of 100,000 fans in the Ukraine came about thanks to a goal from Bez and a second that he claims but some sources record as an own goal.

However, the signing of Alessandro Pistone and an ongoing fight with Robbie Elliott for the left back role ultimately saw him depart for Southampton in a £1.5m move in 1998.

A knee injury against Liverpool was to curtail his career, although he did have a one game loan at Birmingham City in October 1999.

Bez played just two more senior games after that before being forced into retirement - the penultimate one coming as a sub for Saints in a 0-5 hammering at SJP in January 2000.

He later admitted that he knew that his knee was beyond repair, but bluffed his way on to the bench and on to the field in order to play at Gallowgate once more - and receive a great ovation from the Newcastle fans.

Post-Southampton, Bez made a handful of appearances for various non-league clubs including Alfreton Town, Halifax Town and Ossett Town.

He also made a return to playing in a black and white shirt in the Masters Football competition, combining that with punditry roles and sports media work - including that of matchday corporate host at SJP.

2017 then saw him awarded the MBE for services to education, namely a long-term commitment to Show Racism The Red Card since its inception back in 1996.

John's son Beau - also a left back - was at United's Academy between 2021 and 2023.

After his goal, a home fan had to be removed from the pitch after remonstrating with the Argyle defender. Eventually United made a fight of it and pulled back to draw with two goals in the last last ten minutes.

No away fans at the last Tyne-Wear derby to be held at Roker Park, but about 100 actually got in, many well disguised.

The game was screened live to 8,000 fans at Newcastle Arena for those who couldn't hide their allegiance or get a ticket.

Jeff Winter pointed to the spot after Robbie Elliot made contact with Steve Agnew in the box and Martin Scott beat Pavel Srnicek from the spot at the Fulwell End.

Les Ferdinand's run and centre was then nodded in by Peter Beardsley, before Les headed past Tony Coton from a corner.

1999 Kieron Dyer was handed his first England cap by Kevin Keegan. Dyer did well on his debut but club colleague Alan Shearer smashed a hat-trick in a 6-0 demolition of Luxembourg at Wembley.

2000 Tino Asprilla was arrested in Colombia again after "causing chaos whilst carrying a gun on a drunken night out".

Former Tyneside neighbours of Tino were suitably grateful that he didn't bring this particular South American tradition to the mean streets of Jesmond, although some of the lady-friends he wined and dined at DaVinci's could now justifiably wonder whether he was just pleased to see them....

2004 As news of Bobby Robson's successor was still awaited, the U18s thumped Manchester United 4-1 at their Carrington training ground.

Marc Walton grabbed a hat-trick with our other goal coming via a home player - future mackem Jonny Evans putting through his own goal. A certain Giuseppe Rossi got a late consolation for the Reds.

2006 Goals from Peter Ramage, Matty Pattison, Kris Gate and Glenn Reay helped United's reserve side to a 4-3 victory over Newcastle Benfield at Sam Smith's Park.

Following his post-deadline day arrival, free agent Olivier Bernard made a first United appearance since January 2005 - although well short of match fitness.

2007 Midfielder Charles N'Zogbia ended a summer of speculation by signing a new five-year deal to remain at SJP.

2008 Kevin Keegan confirmed that he had left the club after a few days of uncertainty:

"I’ve been working desperately hard to find a way forward with the directors, but sadly that has not proved possible.

"It’s my opinion that a manager must have the right to manage and that clubs should not impose upon any manager any player that he does not want."

The club responded with this statement:

"Newcastle United Football Club is sad and disappointed that Kevin Keegan has resigned.

"Over the last few days the Club has devoted itself to the discussions it has held with Kevin and as a result of those discussions had put together a set of practical suggestions for how to move forward.

"Today the Club made it clear to Kevin that if he had any outstanding concerns on its proposals, he should raise them with the Club.

"The Club regrets that Kevin has, instead of taking up that offer, chosen to resign."

2013 United fulfilled their Premier League obligation to "submit their squad of up to 25 players which contains no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the 'Home Grown' Player criteria" naming just 24:

Home grown (9): Sh.Ameobi, Dummett, Elliot, Gosling, Krul, Tavernier, R.Taylor, S.Taylor, Williamson.

Non home grown (15): Anita, Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Cisse, Coloccini, Debuchy, Gouffran, Gutierrez, Marveaux, Obertan, Remy, Santon, Sissoko, Tiote, Yanga-Mbiwa.

2018
Newcastle U21s began their second season of EFL Trophy participation with a 3-1 win over League One Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Thomas Allan, Callum Roberts and Elias Sorensen netted.
