Update:
New CEO

NUFC confirmed on Thursday that their search for a CEO had ended with the installation of Toronto-born David "Hoppy" Hopkinson:

Newcastle United are delighted to announce the appointment of David Hopkinson as the club's new Chief Executive Officer.

David officially joins the club on Friday, 5th September and will undertake a comprehensive handover process supported by outgoing CEO Darren Eales, who steps down from the position for health reasons.

David brings more than 25 years of senior executive leadership and commercial expertise across three countries, delivering results for some of the world's most iconic and valuable sporting organisations.

David joins Newcastle United after serving as President and Chief Operating Officer at Madison Square Garden Sports in the United States, where he led the business operations of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers.

Both are among the most valuable franchises in the National Basketball Association and National Hockey League respectively, and compete at the world-renowned Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Previously, as Global Head of Partnerships at Real Madrid, David served on the executive team as they cemented their place as one of the world's most valuable football clubs.

Earlier, he spent over two decades at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment as Chief Commercial Officer, overseeing commercial activities for the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA's Toronto Raptors.

David said: "I am incredibly honoured to join Newcastle United at such an exciting time in the club's history.

"This club represents something truly special. It has extraordinary history and heritage, incredibly passionate supporters, and ownership, players and staff who are committed to excellence.

"Having worked with iconic teams across different countries, I understand what it takes to build sustainable success at the highest levels of global sport.

"I greatly admire what has been achieved by the club so far, and I am excited and motivated by what is ahead as we strive to position Newcastle United among the world's elite clubs."

Newcastle United chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, said: "We are delighted to welcome David to Newcastle United.

"David is an outstanding executive whose track record across global sport and entertainment speaks for itself.

"His experience and strategic capabilities will be invaluable as we continue to build on the club's presence locally and grow it globally on and off the pitch.

"David's leadership will be critical as we build upon what we have already achieved since the acquisition towards an exciting future and sustainable success.

"I would like to personally thank Darren Eales for his exceptional work and leadership, as well as his friendship, over the last three years."

Director Jamie Reuben added: "David's arrival as CEO comes at a crucial time for the club and I am confident that he will prove to be an excellent fit for the role.

"He brings a wealth of experience in leadership positions at some of the biggest names in world sport, with an incredibly strong foundation to build upon."

There's an interview with him from 2021 here

Bournemouth (a) set

Belated confirmation that United's Premier League visit to Bournemouth has been rescheduled as a reflection of their Champions League fixtures has now appeared.

The Magpies will visit the Vitality Stadium for a 2pm kick-off on Sunday September 21st, live on Sky Sports.

As away tickets have already gone on sale for this fixture before the rescheduled date was announced, anyone now unable to attend is entitled to a refund from NUFC.

The club say that unsuccessful ballot members will be contacted by them and offered any returned tickets.

PS: For anyone used to using Pokesdown* station for this game, Sunday engineering work affects trains using that route but Bournemouth services are unaffected.

*Pokesdown remains open and trains will run to and from Bournemouth, but the direct route from Pokesdown to London via Southampton has a partial bus replacement.

Ex-Mag:
Barrie Thomas RIP

The death of former Magpie Barrie Thomas has been announced, at the age of 88.

Barrie was a centre forward who worked down the mines before signing for Leicester City, only for national service to halt his progress.

Joining Mansfield Town before moving on to Scunthorpe United in 1959, Thomas was top scorer in the Football League with 30 goals in 22 games when fellow Second Division side Newcastle bid a record £45,000 for him in early 1962.

The Iron opted to cash in and a deal was concluded with John McGuigan also moving from Gallowgate to the Old Showground - while both Leeds United and Manchester United made their interest known.

Debuting in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at St. James' Park, Thomas first found the net in his third game - away at Swansea - and Walter Winterbottom quickly called him up to an England training session, although he failed to make the 1962 World Cup squad.

However,
his time at SJP was blighted by injury and criticism from some fans and colleagues and while netting hat tricks against Boro, Plymouth and Rotherham, he failed to fire his side to promotion.

Losing his place to Ron McGarry, Barrie reluctantly returned to Scunthorpe early in 1964. His scoring touch remained despite fitness issues and as Newcastle were celebrating promotion the following May, he netted five as the Iron beat Luton Town 8-1.

Injury ended his playing career at Barnsley, after which he had a spell managing local non-league side Measham Swifts.

Update:
Mitro makes his move

Former Magpie Aleksander Mitrovic is reported to have turned down the chance of a return to European club football after securing his exit from Saudi side Al Hilal.

The 30 year-old Serbian forward has instead joined Qatar Stars League side Al-Rayyan on a free transfer.

Update:
Eddie gets a six pack

As the dust settles on another mind-numbing transfer window, it's worth cataloguing the inbound business Newcastle have completed - despite well-publicised personnel issues in several off-field roles:

Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton)
Malick Thiaw (AC Milan)
Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest)
Jacob Ramsey (Aston Villa)
Nick Woltemade (Stuttgart)
Yoane Wissaa (Brentford)

Departing meanwhile* were:

Lloyd Kelly (Juventus)
Jamal Lewis (released)
Callum Wilson (released)
Sean Longstaff (Leeds United)
Isaac Hayden (released)
Martin Dubravka (Burnley)
Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville)
Matt Targett (Middlesbrough)
Garang Kuol (Sparta Prague)
Alexander Isak (Liverpool)

* we avoided the expression "off the books" as segments of the Vlachodimos and Targett wages are still paid by NUFC.

2025/26:
Fixture updates

Here's our take on future PL changes - all still tbc:

Arsenal (h) remains on Sunday September 28th as both ourselves and the Gunners play in the CL on the following Wednesday.

Nottingham Forest (h) was moved to Sunday October 5th as the Tricky Trees play in the Europa League the previous Thursday.

Brighton (a) remains on Saturday October 18th as we play the Benfica (h) CL game the following Tuesday.

The November PL TV fixtures are due for release on or by Wednesday September 17th, with the following options:

West Ham (a) could be Saturday November 1st or Sunday November 2nd - the Friday is unlikely as the Carabao Cup Fourth Round is that week. The Monday slot wouldn't work as the Bilbao (h) CL game is the following Wednesday.

Brentford (a) could be Saturday November 8th or Sunday November 9th - the Friday wouldn't work due to the Bilbao (h) CL game the previous Wednesday and there are no Monday games as the international break commences.

Manchester City (h) has to be on Saturday November 22nd* as both ourselves and the Citizens play in the CL on the following Tuesday. *There is a chance of the PL scheduling this for Friday night but not thought likely.

Looking further ahead into 2026:

Aston Villa (h) has to move from Saturday January 24th to Sunday January 25th as the Villans play in the Europa League the previous Thursday. It cannot move to the Monday as we are in CL action the following Wednesday.

Following draws at Aston Villa and Leeds United and a home defeat to Liverpool, Newcastle go searching for their first win over the season on Saturday week (September 13th) when Wolves visit Tyneside.

It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm KO at SJP.

WWFC:
Resisting interest from Newcastle in Norwegian international forward Jorgen Strand Larsen, coach Vitor Pereira added Nigerian international striker Tolu Arokodare to his squad from Belgian side Genk.

The new system is 24/24/48: 24 hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to purchase.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact those applicants directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

On This Day in History
5th September

Born Or Died:

1939 Tommy Knox born, Glasgow, Scotland. (1965-67)

Left winger scouted by Chelsea while playing for East Stirlingshire who moved to Stamford Bridge in 1962 along with Eddie McCreadie and Jimmy Mulholland.

Failing to become a regular starter under Chelsea boss Tommy Docherty however,  Knox was sold to Newcastle in February 1965 and debuted in a 2-1 loss at Leyton Orient that month (United's first-ever appearance on "Match of the Day").

Featuring in the closing stages of that season as United captured the Second Division title, the only competitive senior goal of Tommy's stay at SJP was in a 3-0 win at Derby County that April.

Once back in the top flight however, Knox was only called upon sporadically and his final appearance came in a 0-3 home defeat by Everton in February 1967.

Spells with Third Lanark, Mansfield Town, Northampton Town, St. Mirren plus non-league sides Hillingdon Borough and Tonbridge followed.

Tommy passed away in December 2015 at the age of 76.

1964 William Francis O'Brien born, Dublin, Ireland. (1988-94)

Known as Liam, the original O'Brien who put the ball in the mackems' net did so twice in fine style, in front of a Roker End packed with celebrating Toon fans in both the 1991/92 and 1992/93 seasons.

TV pundit Lennie Lawrence famously commented before the free kick was struck in the latter of those two games, in October 1992  "I fancy Liam O'Brien over the wall."

Midfielder Liam appeared for Bohemian and Shamrock Rovers before joining Manchester United in October 1986, six months after winning the first of 16 senior Irish caps.

However, he failed to make an impact at Old Trafford and is mainly remembered for being sent off after just 85 seconds of a game against Southampton in January 1987.

A move to Tyneside followed in November 1988, with The Red Devils making a £250K profit on their initial £50K outlay.

Joining a Newcastle side under the caretaker charge of Colin Suggett, Liam debuted in a demoralising 0-4 loss at Millwall.

A regular selection under Jim Smith, O'Brien was unable to keep United in the top flight but stayed on following relegation to play a part in the 1989/90 playoff bid, relegation fight the following season and title success in 1992/93.

Losing his place in the side early in the first Premiership campaign, Liam was loaned out to Tranmere Rovers - later completing a permanent move to Prenton Park.

Returning to Ireland in 1999, O'Brien wound down his playing career at Cork City and Bohemians, before coaching at the latter.

A spell on the backroom staff at St. Patricks Athletic was then followed by a return to Bohemians, as assistant manager and then to SPL side Hibernian in November 2011, assisting compatriot Pat Fenlon.

O'Brien departed from Easter Road in the summer of 2013, later coaching back in Ireland with Sligo Rovers during 2015.

PS: Although recorded as a Peter Atherton own goal, Liam was retrospectively credited with Newcastle's very first goal in the Premiership - against Coventry City at Highfield Road in August 1993.

2014 Death of Chris Harker, 77.

The South Africans became the first foreign opposition to face United but the "dusky sons of the Orange Free State" as one reporter called them were in a poor condition after docking at Southampton following their voyage from Capetown four days earlier.

Another concluded that although "the game was full of amusement, play was out of the question" and their ball control "crude".

Following their defeat at SJP, the Kaffirs moved on to the mackems (lost 3-5) and Boro (lost 3-7) on successive nights.

Future Magpie striker Alan Brown's dramatic late equaliser sent this game to extra time and ultimately a dreaded penalty shootout that the mackems won 7-6.

Jim Pearson had the misfortune to see Barry Siddall save his effort and it was to be his final act as a Newcastle player, retiring due to injury six months later.

2001 The England team played a game at SJP for the first time since 1938, defeating Albania 2-0 in a World Cup qualifying tie.

51,046 fans - and Norman Wisdom - saw goals from Michael Owen (44) and Robbie Fowler (88) and paid tribute to recently-deceased TV commentator Brian Moore before kick-off.

Future Magpies Owen and Sol Campbell were in Sven's starting lineup, while old boy Andy Cole was an unused substitute.

2004 The protracted signing of Charles N'Zogbia was rubber-stamped by FIFA, after a lengthy enquiry ruled in our favour.

French side Le Havre had claimed N'Zogbia must stay with them as an apprentice for two years, under French rules.

However United successfully argued that such an arrangement was against EU laws governing freedom of trade. Le Havre later received a claimed £250K compensation.

2006 Newcastle 'keeper Tim Krul kept a clean sheet for the Dutch U19s in a friendly against England at Walsall's Bescot Stadium. The game ended in a 0-0 draw.

2008 just 24 hours after Kevin Keegan quit Newcastle, The Times reported that he could make an instant return.

Reliance Communications, the Indian-based telecoms giant were rumoured to be seeking formal talks with the club's directors with a view to a £220 million takeover.

Reliance owner, Anil Ambani, was said to be keen to reinstate Keegan as manager. It never happened.

2009 United U18s beat Manchester City 3-1 at Darsley Park, with goals from Brad Inman, Phil Airey and Sammy Ameobi.

2011
Betting on Alan Pardew becoming the next top-flight manager to lose his job saw the odds tumble and provoke rumours of his SJP departure.

Odds on him guiding United to a fifth-placed finish, a return to Europe and winning two manager of the year awards that season weren't available....

2014 Rolando Aarons made a goal scoring international debut for England U20s as they defeated Romania 6-0 at Telford in front of senior team coach Roy Hodgson.

Fellow Magpies Adam Armstrong and Freddie Woodman were in the U18s that beat Holland 3-1 at Bury's Gigg Lane.

2016 Three Magpies were in action in one World Cup qualifier as Ireland drew 2-2 with hosts Serbia in Belgrade.

Daryl Murphy and Ciaran Clark came off the bench for the Irish while Aleksandar Mitrovic was subbed for the Serbs. Murphy scored within five minutes of his arrival.

2017 It was a similar scenario as
Mitrovic faced Clark and fellow Magpie Rob Elliot when Serbia took on Ireland in Dublin.

The ten-man Serbs won 1-0 with Mitro and Clark both starting and Elliot on the bench.

2019 Fabian Schar's seventh senior goal for Switzerland - and his first as a Magpie - earned point against Ireland from a European Championship Qualifier in Dublin.

In Monrovia meanwhile, United reserve Mo Sangare scored his debut international goal, netting a penalty as Liberia defeated Sierra Leone 2-1 in a World Cup Qualifier.
