Earlier: NUFC confirmed on Thursday that their search for a CEO had ended
with the installation of Toronto-born 54 year-old, David "Hoppy" Hopkinson:
Newcastle United are delighted to announce the appointment of
David Hopkinson as the club's new Chief Executive Officer.
David officially joins the club on Friday, 5th September and
will undertake a comprehensive handover process supported by
outgoing CEO Darren Eales, who steps down from the position for
health reasons.
David brings more than 25 years of senior executive leadership
and commercial expertise across three countries, delivering results
for some of the world's most iconic and valuable sporting
organisations.
David joins Newcastle United after serving as President and
Chief Operating Officer at Madison Square Garden Sports in the
United States, where he led the business operations of the New York
Knicks and New York Rangers.
Both are among the most valuable franchises in the National
Basketball Association and National Hockey League respectively, and
compete at the world-renowned Madison Square Garden in New York
City.
Previously, as Global Head of Partnerships at Real Madrid,
David served on the executive team as they cemented their place as
one of the world's most valuable football clubs.
Earlier, he spent over two decades at Maple Leaf Sports &
Entertainment as Chief Commercial Officer, overseeing commercial
activities for the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA's Toronto
Raptors.
David said: "I am incredibly honoured to join Newcastle United
at such an exciting time in the club's history.
"This club represents something truly special. It has
extraordinary history and heritage, incredibly passionate
supporters, and ownership, players and staff who are committed to
excellence.
"Having worked with iconic teams across different countries, I
understand what it takes to build sustainable success at the highest
levels of global sport.
"I greatly admire what has been achieved by the club so far,
and I am excited and motivated by what is ahead as we strive to
position Newcastle United among the world's elite clubs."
Newcastle United chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, said: "We are
delighted to welcome David to Newcastle United.
"David is an outstanding executive whose track record across
global sport and entertainment speaks for itself.
"His experience and strategic capabilities will be invaluable
as we continue to build on the club's presence locally and grow it
globally on and off the pitch.
"David's leadership will be critical as we build upon what we
have already achieved since the acquisition towards an exciting
future and sustainable success.
"I would like to personally thank Darren Eales for his
exceptional work and leadership, as well as his friendship, over the
last three years."
Director Jamie Reuben added: "David's arrival as CEO comes at
a crucial time for the club and I am confident that he will prove to
be an excellent fit for the role.
"He brings a wealth of experience in leadership positions at
some of the biggest names in world sport, with an incredibly strong
foundation to build upon."

the rescheduled date was announced, anyone now unable to attend is
entitled to a refund from NUFC.
The club say that unsuccessful ballot members will be contacted by
them and offered any returned tickets.
PS: For anyone used to using Pokesdown* station for this

Ex-Mag:
Barrie Thomas RIP

The death of former Magpie Barrie Thomas has been announced, at the age of 88.
Barrie was a centre
forward who worked down the mines before signing for Leicester City,
only for national service to halt his progress.
Joining Mansfield Town before moving on to Scunthorpe United in 1959, Thomas
was top scorer in the Football League with 30 goals in 22 games when
fellow Second Division side Newcastle bid a record £45,000 for him in early
1962.
The Iron opted to cash in and a deal was concluded with John
McGuigan also moving from Gallowgate to the Old Showground - while both Leeds
United and Manchester United made their interest known.
Debuting in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at St. James' Park, Thomas first found the
net in his third game - away at Swansea - and Walter Winterbottom quickly
called him up to an England training session, although he failed to make the
1962 World Cup squad.
However, his time at SJP was blighted by injury and criticism from some
fans and colleagues and while netting hat tricks against Boro, Plymouth and
Rotherham, he failed to fire his side to promotion.
Losing his place to Ron McGarry, Barrie reluctantly returned to Scunthorpe
early in 1964. His scoring touch remained despite fitness issues and as
Newcastle were celebrating promotion the following May, he netted five as the Iron
beat Luton Town 8-1.
Injury ended his playing career at Barnsley, after which he had a
spell managing local non-league side Measham Swifts.
Update:
Mitro makes his move
Former Magpie Aleksander Mitrovic is reported to have turned
down the chance of a return to European club football after securing
his exit from Saudi side Al Hilal.
The 30 year-old Serbian forward has instead joined Qatar Stars
League side Al-Rayyan on a free transfer.
Update:
Eddie gets a six pack
As the dust settles on another mind-numbing transfer window,
it's worth cataloguing the inbound business Newcastle have completed -
despite well-publicised personnel issues in several off-field roles:
Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton)
Malick Thiaw (AC Milan)
Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest)
Jacob Ramsey (Aston Villa)
Nick Woltemade (Stuttgart)
Yoane Wissaa (Brentford)
Departing meanwhile* were:
Lloyd Kelly (Juventus)
Jamal Lewis (released)
Callum Wilson (released)
Sean Longstaff (Leeds United)
Isaac Hayden (released)
Martin Dubravka (Burnley)
Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville)
Matt Targett (Middlesbrough)
Garang Kuol (Sparta Prague)
Alexander Isak (Liverpool)
* we avoided the expression "off the books" as segments of the Vlachodimos
and Targett wages are still paid by NUFC.

Fixture updates
Here's our take on future PL changes - all still tbc:
Arsenal (h) remains on Sunday September 28th as both
ourselves and the Gunners play in the CL on the following Wednesday.
Nottingham Forest (h) was moved to Sunday October 5th as the
Tricky Trees play in the Europa League the previous Thursday.
Brighton (a) remains on Saturday October 18th as we play the
Benfica (h) CL game the following Tuesday.
The November PL TV fixtures are due for release on or by Wednesday
September 17th, with the following options:
West Ham (a) could be Saturday November 1st or Sunday
November 2nd - the Friday is unlikely as the Carabao Cup Fourth
Round is that week. The Monday slot wouldn't work as the Bilbao (h)
CL game is the following Wednesday.
Brentford (a) could be Saturday November 8th or Sunday
November 9th - the Friday wouldn't work due to the Bilbao (h) CL
game the previous Wednesday and there are no Monday games as the
international break commences.
Manchester City (h) has to be on Saturday November 22nd* as
both ourselves and the Citizens play in the CL on the following
Tuesday. *There is a chance of the PL scheduling this for Friday
night but not thought likely.
Looking further ahead into 2026:
Aston Villa (h) has to move from Saturday January 24th to
Sunday January 25th as the Villans play in the Europa League the
previous Thursday. It cannot move to the Monday as we are in CL
action the following Wednesday.

Wolves
(h)
Following draws at Aston Villa and Leeds United and a home defeat to
Liverpool, Newcastle go searching for their first win over the season on
Saturday week (September 13th) when Wolves visit Tyneside in the Premier

It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm KO at SJP.
Team: Jacob Ramsey and Joelinton are early
doubts.
Anthony Gordon serves the second of his three game domestic ban. He'll
be available against Barcelona in the Champions League before completing
his suspension against Bournemouth in the PL and then returning for
selection against Bradford City in the Carabao Cup.

The new system is 24/24/48: 24
hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
purchase.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered
to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total.

On This Day in History |
|
6th September |
|
Born Or Died:
1943 Bobby Saxton born, Bagby, Yorkshire.
(1988-91 Coach)

A defender with Derby County, Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City, Bobby Saxton had
managed Exeter, Plymouth Argyle, Blackburn Rovers and York City but was
jobless when Jim Smith took him to SJP as his assistant in December 1988.
By Smith's side as United failed to avoid relegation from Division One,
Saxton remained as blew the promotion playoffs and were then marooned in
mid-table.
The sacking of Smith in March 1991 saw Bobby act as caretaker for a 2-3
defeat at Swindon Town but he was then shown the door by incoming boss Ossie Ardiles,
who replaced him with Tony Galvin.
Working as chief scout to Peter Reid during his time in charge of Manchester
City, Saxton followed him to Roker Park and was his number two for seven
seasons.
Later scouting for Sam Allardyce at Bolton Wanderers, Bobby returned to a
coaching role at the mackems in 2006 following the arrival of Niall Quinn
but departed after the appointment of Roy Keane.
Linked with a return to SJP following the arrival of Allardyce, Saxton instead
filed reports for the mackems after returning there in 2009.
A brief return to coaching came early in the 2010/11 season when he spent a
week at former club Plymouth assisting their new management team of Paul
Mariner and Peter Reid with training sessions.
1956 Steve Hardwick born,
Mansfield. (1976-83)

Goalkeeper signed from Chesterfield who made his United debut
in a 0-2 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield in August 1977, replacing Mick
Mahoney.
Steve had the misfortune of playing behind a rotten back four during his time
as a Magpie and following some poor displays became the object of abuse from
the fans.
Replaced between the sticks by Kevin Carr, Hardwick unexpectedly made a
comeback for Kevin Keegan's debut game at home to QPR in August 1982 - after
Carr managed to walk through a plate glass window during the club's
pre-season trip to Madeira.
Retaining his place until Carr returned for the 5-1 win at Rotherham United
that October, Steve was then loaned out to Detroit Express (USA),
Exiting SJP in favour of Oxford United, he would return to haunt us on several
occasions, including a two-legged League Cup defeat in the 1983/84 season.
Later turning out for both Crystal Palace and the mackems on loan, Steve's
final league club was Huddersfield Town, after which he dropped into the
non-league with Emley.
Hardwick later played local league cricket (inevitably as wicket keeper),
becoming head groundsman at Hoylandswaine Cricket Club in the Barnsley and
District League.
Steve died during September 2024.

1970 Stephane Guivarc'h born,
Concarneau, France.
(1998)

Striker bought by Kenny Dalglish during the 1998 World Cup
Finals from Auxerre in a £3.5m deal although few were impressed by his
displays for the home nation in France.
By the time he'd collected a WC Winners medal, he'd been criticised by numerous
pundits, including a certain Ruud Gullit.
The installation of Gullit at SJP a few weeks later was hardly a marriage made
in heaven and so it proved, Stephane debuting and scoring his only goal for
United in the 1-4 home defeat by Liverpool at which Gullit was presented to
the Tyneside crowd.
Coming off the bench in United's next game - a 0-1 loss at Aston Villa,
Guivarc'h was given a starting spot in a 5-1 victory at Coventry City but
failed to find the net.
What proved to be his final outing in a black and white shirt came off
the bench during a 0-2 reverse at Spurs, when the presence of former hero
Les Ferdinand in the home side drew unfavourable comparisons with his
alleged Toon striking successor.
His lowest ebb came when dropped from the side before a League Cup match at
Tranmere Rovers in favour of Paul Dalglish.
Toon fans drinking that night in the nearby "Mersey Clipper" were amazed to
find him mooching disconsolately in the car park - a far cry from the
winners podium in the Stade de France less than four months previously.
And he didn’t have his medal with him, as one scally asked.
A hastily-agreed deal with Glasgow Rangers then saw United recoup their £3.5m
outlay in November 1998.
Despite scoring twice on his debut though and netting in a League Cup Final
win, Guivarc'h also failed to settle at Ibrox and returned to Auxerre in
June 1999 for £3.4m.
Two seasons later he moved on to fellow French side Guingamp, but was forced
into retirement during 2002 by a knee injury.
Stephane later served as an Auxerre director and coached minor
league side US Tregunc, in Brittany.
Asked about his time at SJP he once said:
"After two games Kenny Dalglish, who had signed me and wanted me to play
alongside Alan Shearer, quit. Ruud Gullit arrived and immediately stuck me
in a cupboard out of the way. (I)
never had a coach treat me this way before".

1979 Owen Peterson born, South Shields.
(1994-98)
Joining United as a schoolboy, defender Owen played for the
club's youth team alongside the likes of Jamie McClen and Steve Caldwell.
Absent for much of 1998 due to injury, Peterson was released by United that
December and played Northern League football for North Shields, Washington,
Hebburn Town, Birtley Town and Hebburn Town (again) before an anterior
cruciate ligament injury saw him retire in 2015.
Working for BT he also played cricket for South Shields and coached at the
club.

NUFC.com match
report
2004 Graeme Souness
was announced as United manager, in succession to Bobby
Robson. The sound of jaws dropping was deafening.
Meanwhile, those with inside information went to collect
their substantial winnings from the bookmakers. Not us,
we're sad to say....
2005
Newcastle defender Steven Taylor scored for
England U21s in a 1-1 draw against Germany in Mainz.
James Milner (then on loan to Aston Villa) played the full game
while Steven's future Magpies team mate Ryan Taylor was an
unused substitute for England.
2008
A day of quotes and statements followed Kevin Keegan's abrupt
departure from SJP.
First, the
LMA Chief Executive Richard Bevan was quoted as follows:
"Newcastle failed to create a structure where Kevin Keegan could flourish.
It was like having an orchestra with three conductors and sooner or later it
was going to break down.
"I think I would have liked to hear Newcastle talking about how to build a
model that works, how they are going to create a clear chain of command.
"The dispute between Kevin and the club is in the hands of the lawyers but
at no time in our discussions did Kevin talk about compensation.
"The most important thing for Kevin was that the manager must have the right
to manage.
"A couple of nights ago I was with Kevin for a long period of time and his
sole focus was with the fans.
"He was torn and when he had
no alternative to resign his thoughts were
for the fans. That sends a message to Newcastle."
We suspect that Wor Kev also had
half an eye on his compensation package given his lack of public
utterances....
The club retaliated with this
bizarre release:
"NUFC wished, at all times, to
keep any dispute that it had with Kevin Keegan private.
It is therefore disappointing that information has reached the media through
unnamed sources and a briefing has been given by the League Managers
Association that could give rise to a
misleading impression amongst the Club's fans.
Newcastle United have no desire to engage in a war of words but inaccurate
reporting of factual matters and inaccurate allegations have to be
corrected.
It is a fact that Kevin Keegan, on appointment on 16th January 2008, agreed to
report to a Director of Football and to the Board.
It is a fact that Kevin Keegan worked within that structure from 16th January
2008 until his resignation.
It is a fact that Kevin Keegan, as manager, had specific duties in that he was
responsible for the training, coaching, selection and motivation of the
Team.
It is a fact that Kevin Keegan was allowed to manage his specific duties
without any interference from any Board member.
It is a fact that Kevin Keegan agreed only to deal with the media in relation
to Club matters relating to the Team and not to communicate with the media
in relation to the acquisition or disposal of players.
It is a fact that NUFC is a business and operates, like all businesses, with
financial constraints.
It is a fact that NUFC's financial constraints inform its transfer dealings.
The Board of NUFC have responsibility to ensure that the club is able to
meet its commitments which include the wages and the transfer fees for
players.
The structure at NUFC is clear, and has been clear from 16th January 2008."
So, there you go, both sides putting the fans first. Lucky us.
2009
Quotes that Spanish journalists acquired when speaking to
striker Xisco after his loan move to Racing Santander:
"After a difficult first year in
Newcastle, this year seemed it was going to be more of the same
and a good time to leave.
"I even stopped playing in the last few days to force
my exit. If they hadn’t
accepted the loan at Santander, I would have regarded my
situation at Newcastle as hopeless.”
The Spaniard claimed to have a groin injury
ahead of our league game against Leicester City, but was
mysteriously able to train for his new club just 48 hours later.
You would have thought that he'd never be able to show his face
again at SJP.... Yet three years later he still darkened our
doors.
Thanks, Dennis.
2021 The U23s began their Premier League Cup Group Stage
games with a 0-2 loss to Watford at St. Albans' Clarence Park ground.
It proved to be
interim coach Gary Caldwell's fifth and final game in charge.
