2019 interview here

Earlier: NUFC confirmed on Thursday that their search for a CEO had ended with the installation of Toronto-born 54 year-old, David "Hoppy" Hopkinson:

Newcastle United are delighted to announce the appointment of David Hopkinson as the club's new Chief Executive Officer.

David officially joins the club on Friday, 5th September and will undertake a comprehensive handover process supported by outgoing CEO Darren Eales, who steps down from the position for health reasons.

David brings more than 25 years of senior executive leadership and commercial expertise across three countries, delivering results for some of the world's most iconic and valuable sporting organisations.

David joins Newcastle United after serving as President and Chief Operating Officer at Madison Square Garden Sports in the United States, where he led the business operations of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers.

Both are among the most valuable franchises in the National Basketball Association and National Hockey League respectively, and compete at the world-renowned Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Previously, as Global Head of Partnerships at Real Madrid, David served on the executive team as they cemented their place as one of the world's most valuable football clubs.

Earlier, he spent over two decades at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment as Chief Commercial Officer, overseeing commercial activities for the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA's Toronto Raptors.

David said: "I am incredibly honoured to join Newcastle United at such an exciting time in the club's history.

"This club represents something truly special. It has extraordinary history and heritage, incredibly passionate supporters, and ownership, players and staff who are committed to excellence.

"Having worked with iconic teams across different countries, I understand what it takes to build sustainable success at the highest levels of global sport.

"I greatly admire what has been achieved by the club so far, and I am excited and motivated by what is ahead as we strive to position Newcastle United among the world's elite clubs."

Newcastle United chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, said: "We are delighted to welcome David to Newcastle United.

"David is an outstanding executive whose track record across global sport and entertainment speaks for itself.

"His experience and strategic capabilities will be invaluable as we continue to build on the club's presence locally and grow it globally on and off the pitch.

"David's leadership will be critical as we build upon what we have already achieved since the acquisition towards an exciting future and sustainable success.

"I would like to personally thank Darren Eales for his exceptional work and leadership, as well as his friendship, over the last three years."

Director Jamie Reuben added: "David's arrival as CEO comes at a crucial time for the club and I am confident that he will prove to be an excellent fit for the role.

"He brings a wealth of experience in leadership positions at some of the biggest names in world sport, with an incredibly strong foundation to build upon."

2025/26:
Bournemouth (a) set

Belated confirmation that United's Premier League visit to Bournemouth has been rescheduled as a reflection of their Champions League fixtures has now appeared.

The Magpies will visit the Vitality Stadium for a 2pm kick-off on Sunday September 21st, live on Sky Sports.

As away tickets have already gone on sale for this fixture before the rescheduled date was announced, anyone now unable to attend is entitled to a refund from NUFC.

The club say that unsuccessful ballot members will be contacted by them and offered any returned tickets.

PS: For anyone used to using Pokesdown* station for this game, Sunday engineering work affects trains using that route but Bournemouth services are unaffected.

*Pokesdown remains open and trains will run to and from Bournemouth, but the direct route from Pokesdown to London via Southampton has a partial bus replacement.

Ex-Mag:
Barrie Thomas RIP

The death of former Magpie Barrie Thomas has been announced, at the age of 88.

Barrie was a centre forward who worked down the mines before signing for Leicester City, only for national service to halt his progress.

Joining Mansfield Town before moving on to Scunthorpe United in 1959, Thomas was top scorer in the Football League with 30 goals in 22 games when fellow Second Division side Newcastle bid a record £45,000 for him in early 1962.

The Iron opted to cash in and a deal was concluded with John McGuigan also moving from Gallowgate to the Old Showground - while both Leeds United and Manchester United made their interest known.

Debuting in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at St. James' Park, Thomas first found the net in his third game - away at Swansea - and Walter Winterbottom quickly called him up to an England training session, although he failed to make the 1962 World Cup squad.

However,
his time at SJP was blighted by injury and criticism from some fans and colleagues and while netting hat tricks against Boro, Plymouth and Rotherham, he failed to fire his side to promotion.

Losing his place to Ron McGarry, Barrie reluctantly returned to Scunthorpe early in 1964. His scoring touch remained despite fitness issues and as Newcastle were celebrating promotion the following May, he netted five as the Iron beat Luton Town 8-1.

Injury ended his playing career at Barnsley, after which he had a spell managing local non-league side Measham Swifts.

Update:
Mitro makes his move

Former Magpie Aleksander Mitrovic is reported to have turned down the chance of a return to European club football after securing his exit from Saudi side Al Hilal.

The 30 year-old Serbian forward has instead joined Qatar Stars League side Al-Rayyan on a free transfer.

Update:
Eddie gets a six pack

As the dust settles on another mind-numbing transfer window, it's worth cataloguing the inbound business Newcastle have completed - despite well-publicised personnel issues in several off-field roles:

Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton)
Malick Thiaw (AC Milan)
Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest)
Jacob Ramsey (Aston Villa)
Nick Woltemade (Stuttgart)
Yoane Wissaa (Brentford)

Departing meanwhile* were:

Lloyd Kelly (Juventus)
Jamal Lewis (released)
Callum Wilson (released)
Sean Longstaff (Leeds United)
Isaac Hayden (released)
Martin Dubravka (Burnley)
Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville)
Matt Targett (Middlesbrough)
Garang Kuol (Sparta Prague)
Alexander Isak (Liverpool)

* we avoided the expression "off the books" as segments of the Vlachodimos and Targett wages are still paid by NUFC.

2025/26:
Fixture updates

Here's our take on future PL changes - all still tbc:

Arsenal (h) remains on Sunday September 28th as both ourselves and the Gunners play in the CL on the following Wednesday.

Nottingham Forest (h) was moved to Sunday October 5th as the Tricky Trees play in the Europa League the previous Thursday.

Brighton (a) remains on Saturday October 18th as we play the Benfica (h) CL game the following Tuesday.

The November PL TV fixtures are due for release on or by Wednesday September 17th, with the following options:

West Ham (a) could be Saturday November 1st or Sunday November 2nd - the Friday is unlikely as the Carabao Cup Fourth Round is that week. The Monday slot wouldn't work as the Bilbao (h) CL game is the following Wednesday.

Brentford (a) could be Saturday November 8th or Sunday November 9th - the Friday wouldn't work due to the Bilbao (h) CL game the previous Wednesday and there are no Monday games as the international break commences.

Manchester City (h) has to be on Saturday November 22nd* as both ourselves and the Citizens play in the CL on the following Tuesday. *There is a chance of the PL scheduling this for Friday night but not thought likely.

Looking further ahead into 2026:

Aston Villa (h) has to move from Saturday January 24th to Sunday January 25th as the Villans play in the Europa League the previous Thursday. It cannot move to the Monday as we are in CL action the following Wednesday.

Premier League:
Wolves (h)

Following draws at Aston Villa and Leeds United and a home defeat to Liverpool, Newcastle go searching for their first win over the season on Saturday week (September 13th) when Wolves visit Tyneside in the Premier League.

It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm KO at SJP.

Team: Jacob Ramsey and Joelinton are early doubts.

Anthony Gordon serves the second of his three game domestic ban. He'll be available against Barcelona in the Champions League before completing his suspension against Bournemouth in the PL and then returning for selection against Bradford City in the Carabao Cup.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 4/9
The draw 18/5
WWFC win 6/1

New customers receive a £20 bet when staking £5 (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

WWFC:
Resisting interest from Newcastle in Norwegian international forward Jorgen Strand Larsen, coach Vitor Pereira added Nigerian international striker Tolu Arokodare to his squad from Belgian side Genk.

So far this season, Wolves are pointless and bottom of the table after a 0-4 home loss to Manchester City, 0-1 defeat at Bournemouth a 2-3 reverse to Everton at Molineux.

The new system is 24/24/48: 24 hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to purchase.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact those applicants directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

On This Day in History
7th September

Born Or Died:

1893 Thomas Goodwill born, Bates Cottages, Northumberland. (1913-16)

Outside left Tommy played for local sides Bates Wanderers and Seaton Delaval before joining United for £100 in May 1913.

Impressing for the reserves, a first team debut followed in a 0-1 home loss to Everton the following September and he quickly became a regular starter.

The outbreak of World War I saw league football suspended and Goodwill enlisted for the Northumberland Fusiliers, arriving in France during November 1915.

Sadly Tommy (along with fellow Magpie Dan Dunglinson) were two of the 20,000 British soldiers killed on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme on July 1st 1916.

His name appears on the war memorial at Thiepval in Northern France, only a short distance away from where he fell.

1900 William Wilson born, Port Seton, Scotland. (1925-29)

Goalkeeper who joined United from Peebles Rovers in his native Scotland during 1925, initially on a month-long trial.

Handed his first senior start that September against Blackburn Rovers at St.James' Park, Willie had the misfortune to finish on the losing side in a 1-7 reverse.

Despite that inauspicious entrance, Wilson played on and earned a permanent deal, keeping his first clean sheet a month later as Arsenal were downed 7-0 on Tyneside.

The following season saw Wilson achieve an ever-present feat, keeping goal in all 42 games of Newcastle's First Division title campaign - plus their three FA Cup ties.

Making his final Magpies appearance in a 2-5 derby defeat on Wearside in October 1928, Willie joined Millwall in a £700 transfer the following year, remaining there until his return to Scotland in 1934.

1912 Oswald Bowden born, Newcastle. (1929-30)

Forward who played for local side Meldon Villa before joining Newcastle and featuring for the reserves in North Eastern League fixtures.

Thought by United to be "too frail" in the words of one reporter, Derby County boss and former Magpie George Jobey signed Ossie in May 1930, also taking fellow SJP junior Alf Dunmore to the Baseball Ground.

However Bowden's time as a Ram didn't start well, a bout of pneumonia leaving him in a Leeds hospital when his team mates kicked off the following season.

Belatedly debuting for Derby's first team in March 1933, Bowden played just 10 senior games before joining Nottingham Forest ahead of the 1935/36 season.

However he was only slightly busier in the following two years and similarly underused
during later spells at both Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton.

Returning to Tyneside and playing for Gateshead, Ossie's death was reported during May 1977.

1943 Dave Turner born, Retford, Nottinghamshire. (1960-63)

Midfielder who debuted in a 0-3 home loss to Leeds United in the final game of the 1961/62 season, the same season in which he won an FA Youth Cup medal.

Dave's second league appearance then came almost a year later - a 2-2 season- closing home draw with Preston North End.

His third and final senior outing was a 1-2 League Cup loss at Bournemouth during November 1963, Brighton and Hove Albion paying £4,500 to sign him a month later.

Going on to play over 300 times for the Seagulls, Dave won a Fourth Division Championship medal in 1965 and was later joined at the Goldstone by fellow former Magpie Kit Napier.

Loaned to Portsmouth in 1972, Turner was soon on his way to Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer early the following season.

Later spells on the coaching staff at both Sheffield United and Aldershot Town were followed by a spell coaching out in Canada with Toronto Blizzard.

Returning for a second spell with Aldershot in 1990, Dave later returned to live in his native Nottinghamshire.

1953 Chris Guthrie born, Dilston, Northumberland. (1970-73).

A striker who came through the junior and reserve sides at SJP, Guthrie was capped by England at youth and schoolboy level and younger brother of Magpies defender Ron.

Debuting in a 0-1 home loss to Manchester United in October 1971 as a midfielder, Chris retained his place for a defeat at Everton by the same margin the following week.

What proved to be his only league outing as a forward for Newcastle came the following April when he partnered Malcolm Macdonald in a 0-1 loss at Nottingham Forest.

Moving on to Southend United in a £10,000 deal late in 1972, Guthrie would go on to enjoy a decade in the Football League at the Shrimpers, Sheffield United, Swindon Town, Fulham and Millwall.

After a spell with non-league Witney Town, Chris then tried his luck in the Netherlands with Roda JC (pictured) in 1982 and later that Willem II and Helmond Sport.

Playing for the Seiko club in Hong Kong, Guthrie returning to England for a time with Blyth Spartans before another overseas stint, this time with Royal Racing White in the Belgian city of Brussels.

Working as Ashington's commercial manager, Chris returned to United as kitman between 1989 and 1993.

Away from football his great passion was fly fishing and he represented England at the sport, in addition to contributing various articles to specialist publications.

1976 Garry Brady born, Glasgow, Scotland. (1998-2000)

Growing up on the Castlemilk housing development near Glasgow, Garry joined Spurs at the age of 15 after impressing while playing for Celtic Boy's club.

Capped by Scotland at U18 level, Brady's first team debut came in an FA Cup tie in January 1996 - having overcome an ankle problem that sidelined him for over a year and won a professional deal.

Unhappy with a lack of first team chances at White Hart Lane, Brady allowed his contract to run down and moved to Newcastle ahead of the 1998/99 season.

The lure of playing for his hero Kenny Dalglish prompted the switch, with his £650K fee being set by a tribunal.

By the time of his debut during a 0-1 loss at Everton that November though, Ruud Gullit had replaced Kenny in the dugout.

Brady never looked like making the grade and was hampered by further ankle problems restricting his reserve outings - where looked no more impressive.

Following the arrival of Sir Bobby Robson, the winger was loaned to second tier Norwich City (along with Des Hamilton) in 2000.

Following a second stint at Carrow Road, Garry secured his release from SJP in 2001 and signed for Portsmouth; a proposed move to China apparently falling through.

After two years at Fratton Park he was again shown the door, signing for Dundee in 2002 after unsuccessful trials at both Kilmarnock and Walsall.

Moving on to St.Mirren in 2006 following their ascent to the SPL, Garry completed a century of appearances for the Buddies in five years, scoring four times.

Joining Brechin City in summer 2011, Brady exited Glebe Park two years later.

He later coached at A&M Scotland - a charitable initiative helping under-privileged youngsters across Clydeside.

1980 Emre Belozoglu born, Istanbul, Turkey. (2005-08)

Former Galatasaray midfielder who joined Newcastle in July 2005 from Inter Milan for an initial £3.8m, having featured in both Champions League matches against United during the 2002/03 season.

Debuting in a 1-2 home loss to Deportivo la Coruna in the Intertoto Cup, Emre endeared himself to the Geordie public three months later when scoring the winner in a 3-2 win over the mackems at Gallowgate.

Within weeks however, the player was landed with an international ban and heavy fine, following a  post-match fracas with Swiss players and officials in Istanbul.

As a Magpie, Emre totted up 14 bookings, one red card, three racism allegations and countless injuries; occasional mini-revivals showing glimpses of the obvious talent that remained buried under the attitude.

Emre's time on Tyneside ended in summer 2008; an elongated return to Turkey with Fenerbahce concluded for a claimed £5m.

May 2012 saw him make a Bosman switch to Spanish side Atletico Madrid, but he then returned to Fenerbahce in January 2013.

By 2015 he had joined to fellow Turks Istanbul BB, retitled as Medipol Basaksehir F.K. due to sponsorship.

Emre returned to Fenerbahce for the third time in July 2019, signing a one-year deal.

He announced his retirement in August 2020 and after a spell as Interim Coach was appointed as Fenerbahce Sporting Director.

A switch to Istanbul Basaksehir followed in 2021, ending in September 2023 when Emre was relieved of his responsibilities.

He then managed Ankaragucu but relegation meant he left them just seven months later and he was appointed head coach of Antalyaspor in January 2025.

1988 Mark Cook born, North Shields.
(2005-08)

Academy goalkeeper released by Newcastle in March 2008, having made four reserve appearances over the previous three years.

Mark joined Hartlepool United on trial and signed a permanent deal at Victoria Park, but failed to make a senior appearance for them before his release during 2010.

Following a trial with Blyth Spartans, he signed for Conference side Gateshead before later moving on to Harrogate Town.

August 2012 saw Mark make a shock switch to Peruvian side Universitario, following the appointment of his former 'Pools colleague Nolberto Solano as first team coach.

After two first team starts however, Nobby's exit from Universitario saw Cook return to England.

He later played for Blyth Spartans, Whitby Town (trial), Whitley Bay, Durham City, Newcastle Benfield and Dunston UTS.

Little went right for United at The Hawthorns, Ossie Park withdrawn in the 18th minute when the score was a 1-1 with a cut knee that required stitching.

The opening minute of the second half saw Albion go 4-2 ahead; referee T.Bentley of Manchester inexplicably ruling that a shot had crossed the line when visiting goalkeeper Tom Swinburne caught it via a goal post.

To make matters worse, Swinburne was unable to continue after being kicked in the head earlier and showing signs of concussion when disputing that dubious goal.

He was replaced by Harry Clifton - who himself was limping due to an earlier leg injury!

The game exploded into life just before half time when Liam O'Brien and Lee Clark scored to overturn the home side's lead.

Having played there since 1939, United were back at Prenton Park within a month for a crazy ZDS tie that ended in a penalty shootout after a 6-6 draw.

A well-deserved victory for Newcastle, clad in their "denim" away kit; coming from 0-1 down after 18 year old debutant Rory Allen put Spurs ahead.

Future Cockerel Les Ferdinand bagged a brace - just four days after scoring the winner at Roker Park against the mackems.

2002 Newcastle U19s lost 2-3 at Sheffield United, despite levelling twice through Calvin Zola and James Beaumont.

2004 The reserves were beaten 1-2 by Wolves at Molineux, Toon old boy Carl Cort inevitably netting against his old club.

Shola Ameobi scored for United on a night
that Charles N'Zogbia made his club bow after finally receiving FIFA clearance.

2005 Northern Ireland beat England 1-0 at Windsor Park - the equivalent of our Nightmare on Edgar Street for England fans.

David Healy's winner became the international equivalent of Ronnie Radford's infamous strike, although a hat-trick in his side's 3-2 win over Spain in 2006 may have eclipsed it.

For Michael Owen it was his first competitive game as a Newcastle player. Typical.

2007 Magpies defender Steven Taylor rejected a five-year contract but chose to make his decision public in the local press.

2010 Goals from teenage strike duo Phil Airey and Sammy Ameobi saw United Reserves draw 2-2 at Whitley Park.

Peter Beardsley's side were grateful to 'keeper Ole Soderberg, who made a handful of decent stops to keep the visitors at bay.

The Magpies were beaten 3-4, with Danny Guthrie, Michael Richardson and an un-named trialist on target.

Team: Soderberg, Nzuzi, Riley, Perch, Folan, Richardson,  Abeid, Guthrie (trialist 62), Sam Ameobi, Donaldson, Ranger.
Subs: Alex Nicholson featured.

2012

Adam Campbell got the Newcastle goal and the visitors fielded trialist striker Dan Rickard, but he was never heard of again.

2020 Newcastle confirmed the signings of striker Callum Wilson and midfielder Ryan Fraser, who had previously played together at relegated Bournemouth.

While Fraser became the club's third free transfer of the summer following on from Mark Gillespie and Jeff Hendrick, Wilson was acquired at a cost of £20m.
