Wolves
(h)Following draws at Aston Villa and Leeds United and a home defeat
by
Liverpool, Newcastle go searching for their first PL victory of the season on
Saturday they host Wolves.
They go into the game winless in their most recent five PL games,
something that last happened in October 2024 and during March 2023
before then. That latter run ended with a 2-1 home success against
Wolves.
It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm KO at SJP.
The Magpies are looking to avoid a third successive home loss
for the first time under the leadership of Eddie Howe; following the
2-3 defeat by Liverpool last time out and the season-closing 0-1
reverse at the hands of Everton in May.
The last time United lost three on the bounce at SJP was in early
2021, when Steve Bruce's side were beaten by Leicester City, Leeds
United and Crystal Palace.
Team: Jacob Ramsey and Joelinton are early
doubts.
Anthony Gordon serves the second of his three game domestic ban. He'll
be available against Barcelona in the Champions League before completing
his suspension against Bournemouth in the PL and then returning for
selection against Bradford City in the Carabao Cup.

WWFC: Norwegian forward Jorgen Strand Larsen withdrew from
international duty with an achilles problem. His fitness is yet to
be determined.
Nigerian
international striker Tolu Arokodare arrived from Belgian side Genk
during the transfer window and was on target in Saturday's 1-0 win over Rwanda.
So far this season, Wolves are pointless and bottom of the table after a
0-4 home loss to Manchester City, 0-1 defeat at Bournemouth a 2-3
reverse to Everton at Molineux.
Referee:
Chris Kavanagh - the Lancastrian whistler takes charge of his first
Newcastle game this season. His most recent appointment was for the 4-1
home howking of Manchester United back in April.

Earlier: NUFC confirmed on Thursday that their search for a CEO had ended
with the installation of Toronto-born 54 year-old, David "Hoppy" Hopkinson:
Newcastle United are delighted to announce the appointment of
David Hopkinson as the club's new Chief Executive Officer.
David officially joins the club on Friday, 5th September and
will undertake a comprehensive handover process supported by
outgoing CEO Darren Eales, who steps down from the position for
health reasons.
David brings more than 25 years of senior executive leadership
and commercial expertise across three countries, delivering results
for some of the world's most iconic and valuable sporting
organisations.
David joins Newcastle United after serving as President and
Chief Operating Officer at Madison Square Garden Sports in the
United States, where he led the business operations of the New York
Knicks and New York Rangers.
Both are among the most valuable franchises in the National
Basketball Association and National Hockey League respectively, and
compete at the world-renowned Madison Square Garden in New York
City.
Previously, as Global Head of Partnerships at Real Madrid,
David served on the executive team as they cemented their place as
one of the world's most valuable football clubs.
Earlier, he spent over two decades at Maple Leaf Sports &
Entertainment as Chief Commercial Officer, overseeing commercial
activities for the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA's Toronto
Raptors.
David said: "I am incredibly honoured to join Newcastle United
at such an exciting time in the club's history.
"This club represents something truly special. It has
extraordinary history and heritage, incredibly passionate
supporters, and ownership, players and staff who are committed to
excellence.
"Having worked with iconic teams across different countries, I
understand what it takes to build sustainable success at the highest
levels of global sport.
"I greatly admire what has been achieved by the club so far,
and I am excited and motivated by what is ahead as we strive to
position Newcastle United among the world's elite clubs."
Newcastle United chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, said: "We are
delighted to welcome David to Newcastle United.
"David is an outstanding executive whose track record across
global sport and entertainment speaks for itself.
"His experience and strategic capabilities will be invaluable
as we continue to build on the club's presence locally and grow it
globally on and off the pitch.
"David's leadership will be critical as we build upon what we
have already achieved since the acquisition towards an exciting
future and sustainable success.
"I would like to personally thank Darren Eales for his
exceptional work and leadership, as well as his friendship, over the
last three years."
Director Jamie Reuben added: "David's arrival as CEO comes at
a crucial time for the club and I am confident that he will prove to
be an excellent fit for the role.
"He brings a wealth of experience in leadership positions at
some of the biggest names in world sport, with an incredibly strong
foundation to build upon."

Fixture updates
Here's our take on
future PL changes - all still tbc:
Arsenal (h) remains on Sunday
September 28th as both ourselves and the Gunners play in the CL on
the following Wednesday.
Nottingham Forest (h) was
moved to Sunday October 5th as the Tricky Trees play in the Europa
League on the previous Thursday.
Brighton (a) remains on Saturday
October 18th as we play the Benfica (h) CL game the following
Tuesday.
The November PL TV fixtures are due
for release on or by Wednesday September 17th, with the following
options:
West Ham (a) could be Saturday
November 1st or Sunday November 2nd - the Friday is unlikely as the Carabao Cup Fourth Round is that week. The Monday slot wouldn't work
as the Bilbao (h) CL game is the following Wednesday.
Brentford (a) could be Saturday
November 8th or Sunday November 9th - the Friday wouldn't work due
to the Bilbao (h) CL game the previous Wednesday and there are no
Monday games as the international break commences.
Manchester City (h) has to be on
Saturday November 22nd* as both ourselves and the Citizens play in
the CL on the following Tuesday. *There is a chance of the PL
scheduling this for Friday night but not thought likely.
Looking further ahead into 2026:
Aston Villa (h) has to move from
Saturday January 24th to Sunday January 25th as the Villans play in
the Europa League the previous Thursday. It cannot move to the
Monday as we are in CL action the following Wednesday.
2025/26:
Barcelona (h)
The Magpies are participating in the Champions League for this fifth
time,
kicking off their eight game league stage games on Thursday September 18th by hosting a Barcelona side who
made it to the semi-final stage last season.
Kick-off at SJP is 8pm with live coverage on TNT Sports.
Team:
Although still serving a domestic suspension, Anthony Gordon will be
available for this tie.
Newcastle's CL "A list" squad is as follows:
Pope, Ramsdale, Trippier, Botman, Schar, Thiaw, Krafth, Livramento,
Burn, Joelinton, Tonali, Willock, Guimaraes, Ramsey, Wissa, Gordon,
Barnes, Osula, Elanga, J.Murphy, Woltemade.
That's a 21 man selection - four short of the maximum permitted 25 due
to eligibility criteria - and omits both Jamaal Lascelles and John
Ruddy.
The "B list" selection doesn't need to submitted to UEFA until the day
before each tie and can include an unlimited number of players born
after January 1st 2004.
In Newcastle's case, "B list" inclusions can include Lewis Hall, Lewis
Miley, Alex Murphy and U21/academy players.

FCB: Spanish international midfielder Gavi is set for knee surgery
while defender Alejandro Balde is doubtful.
Despite pulling out of the Dutch squad due to injury, the Catalan media
predict that fellow midfielder Frenkie de Jong will be available for the
game against Newcastle.
Signed on a season-long loan from Manchester United, Marcus Rashford is
included in Barcelona's CL selection.
Ahead of their visit to Tyneside, Hansi Flick's side host
Valencia in La Liga on Sunday. Due to delays re-opening the Nou Camp
following major building work, that game will take place at Barca's
6,000 capacity training ground.
They currently sit fourth in the table with two wins and a draw from the
opening three fixtures.

Ex-Mag:
Barrie Thomas RIP

The death of former Magpie Barrie Thomas has been announced, at the
age of 88.
Barrie was a centre forward who worked down the mines before
signing for Leicester City, only for national service to halt his
progress.
Joining Mansfield Town before moving on to Scunthorpe United in
1959, Thomas was top scorer in the Football League with 30 goals in
22 games when fellow Second Division side Newcastle bid a record
£45,000 for him in early 1962.
The Iron opted to cash in and a deal was concluded with John
McGuigan also moving from Gallowgate to the Old Showground - while
both Leeds United and Manchester United made their interest known.
Debuting in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at St. James' Park,
Thomas first found the net in his third game - away at Swansea - and
Walter Winterbottom quickly called him up to an England training
session, although he failed to make the 1962 World Cup squad.
However, his time at SJP was blighted by injury and criticism
from some fans and colleagues and while netting hat tricks against
Boro, Plymouth and Rotherham, he failed to fire his side to
promotion.
Losing his place to Ron McGarry, Barrie reluctantly returned to
Scunthorpe early in 1964. His scoring touch remained despite fitness
issues and as Newcastle were celebrating promotion the following
May, he netted five as the Iron beat Luton Town 8-1.
Injury ended his playing career at Barnsley, after which he had a
spell managing local non-league side Measham Swifts.
Update:
Compo winner

Restocked for the new
season is the Shearer bucket hat from Football Bobbles,
with the 1996/97 change kit colours on one side and black & white on
the reverse.
These are available to purchase
here in three sizes.

The Tyneside-based
company also has a brand-new range of bespoke T-shirts depicting the
life and times of Newcastle's 50s hero and FA Cup winner George
Robledo.
These are available to purchase
here in a bewildering variety of sizes and colours.
The prize in our latest competition was a Shearer
bucket hat or a Robledo T-shirt and to stand a chance of winning we
asked which former Magpie played for Liverpool the last time we won
a PL game against them in 2015.
It was of course James Milner and the winning entry came from
Peter Cowell.

The new system is 24/24/48: 24
hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
purchase.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered
to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total.
NUFC contact those applicants directly.
Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are
gone.
2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.
2025/26 CL away tickets
will be €50 or less.

On This Day in History |

Born Or Died:
1885 Albert Shepherd born, Great Lever, Lancashire.
(1908-14)

Centre forward who joined United from Bolton Wanderers at a
cost of £850 and scored on debut in a 4-0 success at Nottingham Forest in
November 1908.
A member of the Magpies side that won the First Division Championship in 1909,
Albert collected an FA Cup winners medal the following year, against
Barnsley.
After a 1-1 draw at the Crystal Palace, Shepherd scored twice in a 2-0 replay
success at Goodison Park - the second coming from a penalty, making him the
first ever spot-kick scorer in an FA Cup Final.
The following season however he missed the final against Bradford City due to
injury, with the Magpies losing this time in a replay.
A protracted recovery from injury saw Albert out of first team action for
almost a year and his next senior goal didn't arrive until September 1912 -
what proved to be his eighth and final goal in a Tyne-wear derby.
Scoring over thirty goals in both of his first two full seasons at SJP, Albert
is assured of legendary status amongst Newcastle's centre forwards.
An England international, Shepherd played for his country just twice -
once while with United - but netted in both outings.
Leaving SJP after the 1913-14 season, he joined Bradford City before retiring
two years later, subsequently running the Crown and Cushion Hotel in Bolton
until his death in November 1929.
Albert is buried in the graveyard at Christ Church, Walmsley, near Bolton.

1961 Ian Stewart born, Belfast,
Northern Ireland.
(1985-87)

Left winger turned down by Everton as a youngster, before being
brought over to England by Queens Park Rangers - where he was in competition
for a shirt with fellow future Magpies flop Wayne Fereday.
Brought to SJP by fellow countryman and caretaker boss Willie McFaul, Stewart's
erratic wing play was a source of much frustration to colleagues and fans
alike.
A late winner in a 2-1 away success over Coventry City in only his third game
for the club bode well for him and the side, but it was to be April 1986
before he found the net again, at home to Manchester United.
Injuries and a loss of form saw him appear less frequently in his second season
at SJP and by the middle of the 1987/88 campaign he'd moved on to
Portsmouth.
Things proved to be little better at Fratton Park though after a falling out
with Pompey boss Alan Ball. Stewart was soon sent on loan to Brentford and
eventually signed for Aldershot after a failed trial at Leicester.
Dropping out of the Football League to join Conference side Colchester United,
Ian's final club before retiring was Harrow Borough.
Later as a Football Development officer with the Northern Ireland FA,
Ian won nine full caps while a Magpie, including three at the 1986
World Cup Finals in Mexico.

1989 Matt Ritchie born, Gosport
(2016-24)

Newcastle instantly
compensated for the loss of Andros Townsend to Crystal Palace in July 2016
by paying £12m to secure Scottish international winger Ritchie from Premier
League side Bournemouth.
Ritchie had begun his career at Portsmouth but made a
competitive debut while on loan to Dagenham & Redbridge in 2008.
Later loans took the left-footer on to Notts County
and Swindon Town and after a brief taste of top-flight football at Fratton
Park, he completed a permanent move to Swindon during January 2011.
Part of the side that won League Two in 2012, a £400K
move to Bournemouth was concluded in early 2013 in time to help them gain
promotion to the Championship.
And following a tenth place finish in 2014, Ritchie
then participated in another promotion, scoring 15 goals when the Cherries
won the Championship in 2015.
Debuting for Scotland against Northern Ireland that March, his first
Premier League season ended with four goals from 33 games -
including a "worldie" against the mackems.
Netting for United during his first friendly outing at Bohemian, Matt's
well-struck penalty got him off the mark in the 4-1 Championship home win
over Reading.
He ended the promotion season with 16 goals (12 in
the league) plus various assists that made him one of the most
influential squad members - donning a "magic hat" during the title
celebrations in tribute to his own terrace anthem.
Ritchie's top flight return saw him net three times including
winning strikes at SJP against Manchester United and Arsenal as Newcastle finished tenth.
A training ground spat with Jamaal Lascelles in August 2018 saw him in
the spotlight for the wrong reasons though - following pre-season rumours of an
exit and press links to Boro and Stoke City.
The following campaign saw just two PL goals, but they were both
memorable: a spot kick conversion to defeat Manchester City at SJP and a
late leveller at Bournemouth prompting wild celebrations from away fans.
Sidelined by injury following an
awful assault by Leicester City's Hamza Choudhury during a League Cup tie in
August 2019, Matt returned to net twice during the
locked-down finale to that season - signing an extension until 2023 just before fixtures were halted in March.
The arrival of ex-Cherries colleagues Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser that September
saw claims that Ritchie could go the other way.
However that failed to materialise and Matt found himself playing an unfamiliar left back role under Steve Bruce during the 2020/21
lockdown season.
The arrival of Ritchie's former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe on Tyneside saw him
back in a more orthodox midfield berth but knee problems affected his
availability.
Failing to start a PL game in the 2022/23 season, Matt agreed a 12 month extension keeping him at SJP until 2024
and began studying for his coaching badges.
He was also afforded a cameo appearance from the bench in the final moments of
the Carabao Cup Final loss at Wembley.
What would be Ritchie's eighth and final season saw him make a rare start on
the night that Newcastle won 3-0 at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup.
His final competitive outing for the club came at Burnley in May 2024 - the
last of 13 Premier League substitute appearances that season. The highlight was
his leveller at SJP against Bournemouth less than a minute after
entering in added time.
Media speculation over a career change followed Matt's gaining of an LGV
driving licence, but that was only in order to drive a lorry transporting his
wife's horse.
A free transfer return to his first club Portsmouth saw Ritchie prolong his
playing days with the Championship newcomers.
However a lack of pitch time saw him leave Pompey in August 2025 and sign
for League One side Reading.
PS: Ritchie's habit of hoofing the corner flag after netting in home games
had an unintended consequence in January 2020 - even though he didn't score.
Celebrating Isaac Hayden's late winner against Chelsea, Matt
propelled both flag and pole into the crowd - catching a fan in the front row
of the Gallowgate Corner in
a rather delicate area....

1994 Steven Logan born, Carlisle.
(2010-14)
Midfielder and occasional full back who grew up in Wetheral and
joined Newcastle as a full time Academy member in 2010, after leaving William
Howard School in nearby Brampton.
Spotted playing for Northbank in Carlisle during 2005,
Steven made regular trips to train at Newcastle's Academy.
Qualifying for Scotland through father John, Logan was capped at U17 level and
signed a professional deal at SJP in February 2012.
That came after a belated return to full fitness following hamstring, ankle and
knee injuries and Steven's reserve team debut then came during the following
month in a 0-4 loss away to Aston Villa.
Loaned to Scottish fourth tier side Annan Athletic in 2013, he moved
permanently to Galabank the following summer following his release by
Newcastle.
After a trial at Workington, Logan signed for Northern League Penrith moving
into Scottish Junior football with Shettleston Juniors, St. Roch's, Glasgow
Perthshire, Dalbeattie Star and Bellshill Athletic.

have handled a cross in his box.
And things got no better until the closing stages, with
the Hatters even more dominant that their four goal lead
after 50 minutes might suggest and United hanging on.
The game was captured on film, with a helicopter used to
transport the footage for transmission in that evening's
BBC "Sports Special" TV programme.

After making his first team debut two days previously,
Gordon Hughes broke his leg in this testimonial at
Cappielow Park, Greenock in a tackle with Tommy Orr -
the testimonial beneficiary.
Youngster Alan Spears appeared in his place but was
never called into competitive senior action during his
time as a Magpie.
Team: Simpson, Keith, Batty, Keery, Stokoe, Crowe,
Hughes (Spears 30), Davies, Milburn, Hannah, Evans.
1956 There was
also an injury blow for the Central League side in their
away game at Stoke City, with 17 year-old winger Joe
Thewlis breaking his collar bone.
The Magpies drew 2-2 thanks to goals from George Lackenby
and Bill Curry.

An exceptional game, with Newcastle recovering from a
0-2 deficit to draw level by half time.
A thunderbolt from Albert Franks then put the hosts ahead
before Reg Davies shot through 'keeper Bill Robertson's
legs to make it 5-3.
An injury to Gordon Hughes saw him leave the field - a
major blow in these pre-substitute days - and after
Chelsea got one back, Ron Tindall levelled and then won
it late on.
First Magpies goalkeeper Stewart Mitchell's attempted
throw to Bob Stokoe bounced off his back and into the
path of Tindall before the striker headed home the
winner.

0-6 losers away at West Bromwich Albion the previous
Monday, another poor United display prompted slow hand
claps from malcontented fans.
The Sunday Sun were equally unimpressed by
what they saw, dubbing the docile hosts "Mitten's

Ex-Magpie George Hannah was on target for the
visitors who could have won by a greater margin: Terry
Marshall's goal a miscued cross that caught out visiting
custodian Bert Trautmann.
1960 Things were no better for Newcastle
reserves, beaten 1-7 by the Citizens at Maine Road. John

accepting Kevin Keegan's latest Manager of the Month
award.
United played Mike Hooper in goal in the absence of
suspended Pavel Srnicek, with veteran John Burridge on
the bench.
An early rocket from Cole was equalised by former Magpie
Gavin Peacock before Robert Lee saw a penalty saved.
Fortunately Fox was on hand to knock in the rebound.
Finally, Dennis Wise was sent off for saying nasty
things to the referee's assistant. Once a little sh*t,
always a little sh*t....

Kevin Keegan went for the jugular, dropping

Asprilla to a forward line consisting of Alan
Shearer, Les Ferdinand, Peter Beardsley and David
Ginola.
The United boss commented afterwards that:
"We had three, and sometimes two, at the back, and
five up front. The only thing that was missing was a
goalkeeper with a woolly jersey and a flat cap!"
1997 David Batty and Les Ferdinand (by then a Spurs
player) joined former Magpie Paul Gascoigne in the
England line-up as Moldova were beaten 4-0 at Wembley.
Meanwhile, in Tbilisi, United's Temuri Ketsbaia helped
Georgia hold Italy to a 0-0 draw, meaning England would
qualify for France 98 if they could get a point in Rome.

investigation into suspected criminal price fixing and
fraud at Britain's two largest sports retailers: JJB and
Sports Direct.
The investigation followed a referral from the Office of

since the turn of the year.
There was better news,
meanwhile, for Chris Hughton who picked up the August
Manager of the Month award for the Championship.
