Wolves
(h)Following draws at Aston Villa and Leeds United and a home defeat
by
Liverpool, Newcastle go searching for their first PL victory of the season on
Saturday they host Wolves.
They go into the game winless in their most recent five PL games,
something that last happened in October 2024 and during March 2023
before then. That latter run ended with a 2-1 home success against
Wolves.
It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm KO at SJP.
The Magpies are looking to avoid a third successive home loss
for the first time under the leadership of Eddie Howe; following the
2-3 defeat by Liverpool last time out and the season-closing 0-1
reverse at the hands of Everton in May.
The last time United lost three on the bounce at SJP was in early
2021, when Steve Bruce's side were beaten by Leicester City, Leeds
United and Crystal Palace.
Tyneside-based Football Bobbles will have a stall outside The
Trent House from Noon. Card payments accepted.
Team: Jacob Ramsey and Joelinton are early
doubts.
Anthony Gordon serves the second of his three game domestic ban. He'll
be available against Barcelona in the Champions League before completing
his suspension against Bournemouth in the PL and then returning for
selection against Bradford City in the Carabao Cup.

WWFC: Norwegian forward Jorgen Strand Larsen withdrew from
international duty with an achilles problem. His fitness is yet to
be determined.
Nigerian
international striker Tolu Arokodare arrived from Belgian side Genk
during the transfer window and was on target in Saturday's 1-0 win over Rwanda.
So far this season, Wolves are pointless and bottom of the table after a
0-4 home loss to Manchester City, 0-1 defeat at Bournemouth a 2-3
reverse to Everton at Molineux.
Referee:
Chris Kavanagh - the Lancastrian whistler takes charge of his first
Newcastle game this season. His most recent appointment was for the 4-1
home howking of Manchester United back in April.

Earlier: NUFC confirmed on Thursday that their search for a CEO had ended
with the installation of Toronto-born 54 year-old, David "Hoppy" Hopkinson:
Newcastle United are delighted to announce the appointment of
David Hopkinson as the club's new Chief Executive Officer.
David officially joins the club on Friday, 5th September and
will undertake a comprehensive handover process supported by
outgoing CEO Darren Eales, who steps down from the position for
health reasons.
David brings more than 25 years of senior executive leadership
and commercial expertise across three countries, delivering results
for some of the world's most iconic and valuable sporting
organisations.
David joins Newcastle United after serving as President and
Chief Operating Officer at Madison Square Garden Sports in the
United States, where he led the business operations of the New York
Knicks and New York Rangers.
Both are among the most valuable franchises in the National
Basketball Association and National Hockey League respectively, and
compete at the world-renowned Madison Square Garden in New York
City.
Previously, as Global Head of Partnerships at Real Madrid,
David served on the executive team as they cemented their place as
one of the world's most valuable football clubs.
Earlier, he spent over two decades at Maple Leaf Sports &
Entertainment as Chief Commercial Officer, overseeing commercial
activities for the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA's Toronto
Raptors.
David said: "I am incredibly honoured to join Newcastle United
at such an exciting time in the club's history.
"This club represents something truly special. It has
extraordinary history and heritage, incredibly passionate
supporters, and ownership, players and staff who are committed to
excellence.
"Having worked with iconic teams across different countries, I
understand what it takes to build sustainable success at the highest
levels of global sport.
"I greatly admire what has been achieved by the club so far,
and I am excited and motivated by what is ahead as we strive to
position Newcastle United among the world's elite clubs."
Newcastle United chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, said: "We are
delighted to welcome David to Newcastle United.
"David is an outstanding executive whose track record across
global sport and entertainment speaks for itself.
"His experience and strategic capabilities will be invaluable
as we continue to build on the club's presence locally and grow it
globally on and off the pitch.
"David's leadership will be critical as we build upon what we
have already achieved since the acquisition towards an exciting
future and sustainable success.
"I would like to personally thank Darren Eales for his
exceptional work and leadership, as well as his friendship, over the
last three years."
Director Jamie Reuben added: "David's arrival as CEO comes at
a crucial time for the club and I am confident that he will prove to
be an excellent fit for the role.
"He brings a wealth of experience in leadership positions at
some of the biggest names in world sport, with an incredibly strong
foundation to build upon."

Fixture updates
Here's our take on
future PL changes - all still tbc:
Arsenal (h) remains on Sunday
September 28th as both ourselves and the Gunners play in the CL on
the following Wednesday.
Nottingham Forest (h) was
moved to Sunday October 5th as the Tricky Trees play in the Europa
League on the previous Thursday.
Brighton (a) remains on Saturday
October 18th as we play the Benfica (h) CL game the following
Tuesday.
The November PL TV fixtures are due
for release on or by Wednesday September 17th, with the following
options:
West Ham (a) could be Saturday
November 1st or Sunday November 2nd - the Friday is unlikely as the Carabao Cup Fourth Round is that week. The Monday slot wouldn't work
as the Bilbao (h) CL game is the following Wednesday.
Brentford (a) could be Saturday
November 8th or Sunday November 9th - the Friday wouldn't work due
to the Bilbao (h) CL game the previous Wednesday and there are no
Monday games as the international break commences.
Manchester City (h) has to be on
Saturday November 22nd* as both ourselves and the Citizens play in
the CL on the following Tuesday. *There is a chance of the PL
scheduling this for Friday night but not thought likely.
Looking further ahead into 2026:
Aston Villa (h) has to move from
Saturday January 24th to Sunday January 25th as the Villans play in
the Europa League the previous Thursday. It cannot move to the
Monday as we are in CL action the following Wednesday.
2025/26:
Barcelona (h)
The Magpies are participating in the Champions League for this fifth
time,
kicking off their eight game league stage games on Thursday September 18th by hosting a Barcelona side who
made it to the semi-final stage last season.
Kick-off at SJP is 8pm with live coverage on TNT Sports.
Team:
Although still serving a domestic suspension, Anthony Gordon will be
available for this tie.
Newcastle's CL "A list" squad is as follows:
Pope, Ramsdale, Trippier, Botman, Schar, Thiaw, Krafth, Livramento,
Burn, Joelinton, Tonali, Willock, Guimaraes, Ramsey, Wissa, Gordon,
Barnes, Osula, Elanga, J.Murphy, Woltemade.
That's a 21 man selection - four short of the maximum permitted 25 due
to eligibility criteria - and omits both Jamaal Lascelles and John
Ruddy.
The "B list" selection doesn't need to submitted to UEFA until the day
before each tie and can include an unlimited number of players born
after January 1st 2004.
In Newcastle's case, "B list" inclusions can include Lewis Hall, Lewis
Miley, Alex Murphy and U21/academy players.

FCB: Spanish international midfielder Gavi is set for knee surgery
while defender Alejandro Balde is doubtful.
Despite pulling out of the Dutch squad due to injury, the Catalan media
predict that fellow midfielder Frenkie de Jong will be available for the
game against Newcastle.
Signed on a season-long loan from Manchester United, Marcus Rashford is
included in Barcelona's CL selection.
Ahead of their visit to Tyneside, Hansi Flick's side host
Valencia in La Liga on Sunday. Due to delays re-opening the Nou Camp
following major building work, that game will take place at Barca's
6,000 capacity training ground.
They currently sit fourth in the table with two wins and a draw from the
opening three fixtures.

Ex-Mag:
Barrie Thomas RIP

The death of former Magpie Barrie Thomas has been announced, at the
age of 88.
Barrie was a centre forward who worked down the mines before
signing for Leicester City, only for national service to halt his
progress.
Joining Mansfield Town before moving on to Scunthorpe United in
1959, Thomas was top scorer in the Football League with 30 goals in
22 games when fellow Second Division side Newcastle bid a record
£45,000 for him in early 1962.
The Iron opted to cash in and a deal was concluded with John
McGuigan also moving from Gallowgate to the Old Showground - while
both Leeds United and Manchester United made their interest known.
Debuting in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at St. James' Park,
Thomas first found the net in his third game - away at Swansea - and
Walter Winterbottom quickly called him up to an England training
session, although he failed to make the 1962 World Cup squad.
However, his time at SJP was blighted by injury and criticism
from some fans and colleagues and while netting hat tricks against
Boro, Plymouth and Rotherham, he failed to fire his side to
promotion.
Losing his place to Ron McGarry, Barrie reluctantly returned to
Scunthorpe early in 1964. His scoring touch remained despite fitness
issues and as Newcastle were celebrating promotion the following
May, he netted five as the Iron beat Luton Town 8-1.
Injury ended his playing career at Barnsley, after which he had a
spell managing local non-league side Measham Swifts.
Update:
Compo winner

Restocked for the new
season is the Shearer bucket hat from Football Bobbles,
with the 1996/97 change kit colours on one side and black & white on
the reverse.
These are available to purchase
here in three sizes.

The Tyneside-based
company also has a brand-new range of bespoke T-shirts depicting the
life and times of Newcastle's 50s hero and FA Cup winner George
Robledo.
These are available to purchase
here in a bewildering variety of sizes and colours.
The prize in our latest competition was a Shearer
bucket hat or a Robledo T-shirt and to stand a chance of winning we
asked which former Magpie played for Liverpool the last time we won
a PL game against them in 2015.
It was of course James Milner and the winning entry came from
Peter Cowell.

The new system is 24/24/48: 24
hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
purchase.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered
to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total.
NUFC contact those applicants directly.
Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are
gone.
2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.
2025/26 CL away tickets
will be €50 or less.

Born Or Died:
1959 Kevin Patterson
born Newcastle
(1976-80)
Central defender who played
for United's junior and reserve sides without making
the breakthrough to first team level.
Subsequently appearing in local league football for Whitley Bay and
South Shields, Kevin later lived in Ryton.
1966 Graeme Aldred born, Ferryhill
(1983-84)
Defender who represented Durham county and joined Newcastle's youth
setup, appearing at Northern Intermediate level alongside the likes of Paul
Ferris and John Carver.
Failing to make the grade at Gallowgate, he moved on to Darlington for the
1984/85 season and later appeared for Barrow.
Later playing for Whitley Bay, Graeme was tragically killed in a car accident
near Bishop Auckland during February 1987.
1975
Chris Holland born, Whalley, Lancashire.
(1994-96)

Midfielder who
had made just one first team appearance for
Preston North End, when Newcastle paid £100K for him
in January 1994.
It later emerged that the sacking of Peter Reid by
Manchester City had stopped him from moving to Maine
Road just hours earlier, while Leeds United had
also fielded him as a trialist at junior level.
Making his Premiership debut two months after
moving to SJP, Chris laid on both goals for Andy
Cole in a 2-0 midweek home win over Ipswich Town with
two admirable crosses from the right flank.
A substitute appearance against Norwich and a
start against Chelsea came that season - all
at SJP - while England U21 recognition followed
and he was invited to train with the
England senior side.
Holland was to have just one further first team outing
at SJP, although that in itself was cause for
some celebration, Chris coming off the bench in a
3-1 League Cup home win over Bristol City in
October 1995.
That was four months after his career had been in
the balance, after an unprovoked ammonia attack in
a Tyneside nightclub that partially blinded him in one
eye.
Thankfully Chris recovered sufficiently to resume his career,
going out on loan initially to Birmingham City before signing for them
permanently in a £600K deal.
Next stop in 2000 was Huddersfield Town, where Holland was a
regular until 2004, when joining Boston United.
His stay at York Street
was relatively low -key, but he did find himself
alongside another former Magpie at the start of the 2004/05
season, namely Paul Gascoigne.
In
January 2007, Chris moved to non-league Southport, captaining
them before leaving after 14 months at Haig Avenue.
After stints at Leigh Genesis,
Fleetwood Town, Burscough and Barrow, Holland
joined Guiseley in 2009.
Initially combining a playing role with that of
assistant manager at the Lions, Chris then became first team coach in
2011 before stepping down in September 2013.
Subsequently acting as Assistant Manager of AFC
Telford, Chris later held a similar role at
Clitheroe before joining the coaching staff at
Darwen FC.

honour of the Channel Fleet, who were on a visit to wearside.
Although servicemen from the nine ships at anchor were
granted free admission to the game, there was a lower
attendance than expected (a cricket match was also staged
at the nearby Ashbrooke ground).
The Newcastle Daily Chronicle reported the homesters
fifth goal thus: "Hannah sent in a sort of

admirers by failing at it.
"The buzz on the ball

Bolton went ahead through a first minute free kick

A game which Newcastle dominated but lost thanks to
early and late goals from two future Magpies.
This surprise victory for the visitors became more
remarkable as our season improved and theirs
disintegrated.

having agreed to swap Ewood Park for St. James'

A remarkable
turnout witnessed the final hurrah of the Entertainers era at SJP, as Steve
Harper brought down the curtain on his 20-year
career as a Newcastle United player.
Sadly for him though, his cast of former colleagues
couldn't find a
goal during 80 minutes against their Italian foes - and then failed from the
penalty spot, leaving the Rossoneri to claim the silverware.
In the absence of memorable moments from Shearer & Co, much attention was devoted to a certain 45 year old mackem dweller
who formerly plied his trade at the San Siro.
A sprightly Paolo Di Canio played the part of pantomime villain and was
booed throughout, suffering from the close attentions of Joey Barton at
one point - to the great delight of those present.

Newcastle's 1000th Premier League coincided
with the much-hyped return
of Cristiano Ronaldo to English football.
Despite the scoreline, the Magpies were very much in the
contest when Javier Manquillo equalised but Ronaldo's
second goal gave the home side renewed impetus.
Freddie Woodman's fumble gifted Ronaldo the opener and
this proved to
be
the goalkeeper's final game for Newcastle.
