Premier League:
Wolves (h)

Following draws at Aston Villa and Leeds United and a home defeat by Liverpool, Newcastle go searching for their first PL victory of the season on Saturday they host Wolves.

They go into the game winless in their most recent five PL games, something that last happened in October 2024 and during March 2023 before then. That latter run ended with a 2-1 home success against Wolves.

It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm KO at SJP.

The Magpies are looking to avoid a third successive home loss for the first time under the leadership of Eddie Howe; following the 2-3 defeat by Liverpool last time out and the season-closing 0-1 reverse at the hands of Everton in May.

The last time United lost three on the bounce at SJP was in early 2021, when Steve Bruce's side were beaten by Leicester City, Leeds United and Crystal Palace.

Tyneside-based Football Bobbles will have a stall outside The Trent House from Noon. Card payments accepted.

Team: Speaking to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe revealed that Yoane Wissa wouldn't make his debut on Saturday due to a knee problem.

Pressed further the Magpies boss admitted that his new signing may need to see a specialist after tests on the ailment that forced Wissa off against Senegal in midweek following several industrial challenges on him.

Howe also confirmed that a knee issue would sideline Jacob Ramsey until after the next international break. That would put the midfielder in contention for the PL trip to Brighton but see him sit out the next seven league and cup games.

Anthony Gordon serves the second of his three game domestic ban. He'll be available against Barcelona in the Champions League before completing his suspension against Bournemouth in the PL and then returning for selection against Bradford City in the Carabao Cup.

Nick Woltemade is in line for his debut and Joelinton has returned to training after missing the visit to Leeds and withdrawing from the Brazil squad.

Newcastle's 25 man PL squad is as follows:

Pope, Ramsdale, Gillespie, Ruddy, Trippier, Botman, Schar, Thiaw, Krafth, Livramento, Burn, Lascelles, Ashby, Joelinton, Tonali, Willock, Guimaraes, Ramsey, Wissa, Gordon, Barnes, Osula, Elanga, J.Murphy, Woltemade.

Among the 62 names on the U21 list are Lewis Hall, Lewis Miley, Alex Murphy, Sean Neave and Seung soo Park.

WWFC:
Norwegian forward Jorgen Strand Larsen withdrew from international duty with an achilles problem that had kept him out of the previous game against Everton. He'll miss out on Saturday.

Nigerian international striker Tolu Arokodare arrived from Belgian side Genk during the transfer window and was on target in Saturday's 1-0 win over Rwanda.

So far this season, Wolves are pointless and bottom of the table after a 0-4 home loss to Manchester City, 0-1 defeat at Bournemouth a 2-3 reverse to Everton at Molineux.

Referee: Chris Kavanagh - the Lancastrian whistler takes charge of his first Newcastle game this season. His most recent appointment was for the 4-1 home howking of Manchester United back in April.

Suddenly last Summer

Responding to questions about the departed Alexander Isak in Friday's media call, Eddie Howe said:

"Alex and I always enjoyed a great relationship. I loved working with him and I hope he loved working with us.

"It was mutually beneficial. We helped him become the player that he in part is today, and he helped us as a team achieve some unbelievable milestones. He was part of a very successful team.

“But to give you a bit more on that, the moment he went on strike, our relationship did change. I think that was probably a turning point in our relationship.

"Communication became difficult from that point onwards. I won’t go into any more detail than that.”

The Magpies are participating in the Champions League for this fifth time, kicking off their eight game league stage games on Thursday September 18th by hosting a Barcelona side who made it to the semi-final stage last season.

Kick-off at SJP is 8pm with live coverage on TNT Sports.

Team: Jacob Ramsey is injured and Yoane Wissa looks likely to join him on the sidelines. Although still serving a domestic suspension, Anthony Gordon is available for this tie.

The touchline ban handed out to visiting manager Hansi Flick and his assistant Marcus Sorg has been overturned and both can occupy the away dugout.

Spanish international midfielder Gavi is set for knee surgery while defender Alejandro Balde is doubtful.

Despite pulling out of the Dutch squad due to injury, the Catalan media predict that fellow midfielder Frenkie de Jong will be available for the game against Newcastle.

Signed on a season-long loan from Manchester United, Marcus Rashford is included in Barcelona's CL selection.

Ahead of their visit to Tyneside, they host Valencia in La Liga on Sunday. Due to delays re-opening the Nou Camp following major building work, that game will take place at Barca's 6,000 capacity training ground.

They currently sit fourth in the table with two wins and a draw from the opening three fixtures.

Earlier: NUFC confirm that their search for a CEO has ended with the installation of Toronto-born 54 year-old, David "Hoppy" Hopkinson:

Newcastle United are delighted to announce the appointment of David Hopkinson as the club's new Chief Executive Officer.

David officially joins the club on Friday, 5th September and will undertake a comprehensive handover process supported by outgoing CEO Darren Eales, who steps down from the position for health reasons.

David brings more than 25 years of senior executive leadership and commercial expertise across three countries, delivering results for some of the world's most iconic and valuable sporting organisations.

David joins Newcastle United after serving as President and Chief Operating Officer at Madison Square Garden Sports in the United States, where he led the business operations of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers.

Both are among the most valuable franchises in the National Basketball Association and National Hockey League respectively, and compete at the world-renowned Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Previously, as Global Head of Partnerships at Real Madrid, David served on the executive team as they cemented their place as one of the world's most valuable football clubs.

Earlier, he spent over two decades at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment as Chief Commercial Officer, overseeing commercial activities for the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA's Toronto Raptors.

David said: "I am incredibly honoured to join Newcastle United at such an exciting time in the club's history.

"This club represents something truly special. It has extraordinary history and heritage, incredibly passionate supporters, and ownership, players and staff who are committed to excellence.

"Having worked with iconic teams across different countries, I understand what it takes to build sustainable success at the highest levels of global sport.

"I greatly admire what has been achieved by the club so far, and I am excited and motivated by what is ahead as we strive to position Newcastle United among the world's elite clubs."

Newcastle United chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, said: "We are delighted to welcome David to Newcastle United.

"David is an outstanding executive whose track record across global sport and entertainment speaks for itself.

"His experience and strategic capabilities will be invaluable as we continue to build on the club's presence locally and grow it globally on and off the pitch.

"David's leadership will be critical as we build upon what we have already achieved since the acquisition towards an exciting future and sustainable success.

"I would like to personally thank Darren Eales for his exceptional work and leadership, as well as his friendship, over the last three years."

Director Jamie Reuben added: "David's arrival as CEO comes at a crucial time for the club and I am confident that he will prove to be an excellent fit for the role.

"He brings a wealth of experience in leadership positions at some of the biggest names in world sport, with an incredibly strong foundation to build upon."

Fixture updates

Here's our take on future PL changes - all still tbc:

Arsenal (h) remains on Sunday September 28th as both ourselves and the Gunners play in the CL on the following Wednesday.

Nottingham Forest (h) was moved to Sunday October 5th as the Tricky Trees play in the Europa League on the previous Thursday.

Brighton (a)
remains on Saturday October 18th as we play the Benfica (h) CL game the following Tuesday.

The November PL TV fixtures are due for release on or by Wednesday September 17th, with the following options:

West Ham (a) could be Saturday November 1st or Sunday November 2nd - the Friday is unlikely as the Carabao Cup Fourth Round is that week. The Monday slot wouldn't work as the Bilbao (h) CL game is the following Wednesday.

Brentford (a) could be Saturday November 8th or Sunday November 9th - the Friday wouldn't work due to the Bilbao (h) CL game the previous Wednesday and there are no Monday games as the international break commences.

Manchester City (h) has to be on Saturday November 22nd* as both ourselves and the Citizens play in the CL on the following Tuesday. *There is a chance of the PL scheduling this for Friday night but not thought likely.

Looking further ahead into 2026:

Aston Villa (h) has to move from Saturday January 24th to Sunday January 25th as the Villans play in the Europa League the previous Thursday. It cannot move to the Monday as we are in CL action the following Wednesday.

Match report

Ex-Mag:
Barrie Thomas RIP

The death of former Magpie Barrie Thomas has been announced, at the age of 88.

Barrie was a centre forward who worked down the mines before signing for Leicester City, only for national service to halt his progress.

Joining Mansfield Town before moving on to Scunthorpe United in 1959, Thomas was top scorer in the Football League with 30 goals in 22 games when fellow Second Division side Newcastle bid a record £45,000 for him in early 1962.

The Iron opted to cash in and a deal was concluded with John McGuigan also moving from Gallowgate to the Old Showground - while both Leeds United and Manchester United made their interest known.

Debuting in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at St. James' Park, Thomas first found the net in his third game - away at Swansea - and Walter Winterbottom quickly called him up to an England training session, although he failed to make the 1962 World Cup squad.

However, his time at SJP was blighted by injury and criticism from some fans and colleagues and while netting hat tricks against Boro, Plymouth and Rotherham, he failed to fire his side to promotion.

Losing his place to Ron McGarry, Barrie reluctantly returned to Scunthorpe early in 1964. His scoring touch remained despite fitness issues and as Newcastle were celebrating promotion the following May, he netted five as the Iron beat Luton Town 8-1.

Injury ended his playing career at Barnsley, after which he had a spell managing local non-league side Measham Swifts.

Update:
Compo winner

Restocked for the new season is the Shearer bucket hat from Football Bobbles, with the 1996/97 change kit colours on one side and black & white on the reverse.

These are available to purchase here in three sizes.

The Tyneside-based company also has a brand-new range of bespoke T-shirts depicting the life and times of Newcastle's 50s hero and FA Cup winner George Robledo.

These are available to purchase here in a bewildering variety of sizes and colours.

The prize in our latest competition was a Shearer bucket hat or a Robledo T-shirt and to stand a chance of winning we asked which former Magpie played for Liverpool the last time we won a PL game against them in 2015.

It was of course James Milner and the winning entry came from Peter Cowell.

The new system is 24/24/48: 24 hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to purchase.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact those applicants directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

2025/26 CL away tickets will be €50 or less.

On This Day in History
12th September

Born Or Died:

1927 Andy Graver born, Craghead, Durham. (1947-50)

Centre forward who had the misfortune to be in the queue for a striking spot at SJP behind the likes of Jackie Milburn and George Robledo.

Working as a miner, Andy turned down an approach from Coventry City in order to join Newcastle, but was only elevated from the reserves into the first team on one occasion - a 1-1 draw at Manchester City.

A £5,000 bid from Lincoln City in September 1950 was accepted by the Magpies and Graver proved to be an instant hit at Sincil Bank, netting on his debut.

36 goals helped the Imps to win Division Three North, but a cartilage problem saw him sidelined near the end of that season, also missing out on an England B cap.

Six goals in an 11-1 demolition of Crewe and four in an 8-0 success against Blackburn had scouts monitoring Graver and Leicester City paid £27,500 in December 1954.

After only a year at Filbert Street Andy was back at Lincoln, but Stoke City then signed him. Moving from the Potters to Boston United, Andy eventually appeared for Lincoln in a third spell, finally retiring after stints at Skegness Town and Ilkeston Town.

Living near Lincoln and coaching City's youngsters thereafter, Andy worked in the financial sector and had an executive box at Sincil Bank named in his honour.

He passed away in January 2014, aged 86.

1975 Carl Serrant born, Bradford.
(1998-2001)

England B international defender who arrived at SJP during a squad overhaul undertaken by Kenny Dalglish in the summer of 1998.

Signing from Oldham Athletic at a cost of £500K, left back Carl appeared for United in pre-season, but made his debut the game following Dalglish's hasty departure - a 4-1 home defeat by Liverpool at SJP.

Overlooked by Ruud Gullit until an away loss at Spurs two months later, Serrant made just two more appearances that season, giving away a vital penalty at Everton before being hauled off at half time.

After a handful of reserve outings, Serrant was shipped out on loan to Neil Warnock's Bury - having dropped down the SJP pecking order with the purchase of Didier Domi.

Fifteen games for the Shakers followed, before Carl returned to SJP and again featured in pre-season for United, retaining his place in the first XI.

In just his second game of the season though, Serrant was stretchered from the field at a damp Dell against Southampton with a serious knee injury.

An attempted comeback in the reserves led to new Magpies boss Bobby Robson fielding Carl as a second half substitute in the UEFA Cup away to Zurich in October 1999.

However, that proved to be his final first team game for the club, with a mooted loan to Sheffield United in July 2000 falling down after yet another injury setback.

Carl eventually bowed to the inevitable and announced his retirement in May 2001, although he did later return to playing at non- league level with Bradford Park Avenue, Droylsden and Farsley Celtic.

Working as a player's agent for a spell, he studied for a Sports Science qualification, gaining experience as a fitness coach with Leeds United.

A trio of roles in that filed then followed for Serrant, working for Neil Warnock at Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and QPR between 2007 and 2010.

Remaining at Loftus Road for a further six years, Carl became head of Sports Science at Charlton Athletic in 2016.

Reunited with Warnock at Cardiff City the following year, he remained in South Wales when the manager joined Middlesbrough.

April 2022 saw Serrant become Assistant Manager at Newport County for a six month spell before reuniting with Warnock again, this time at Huddersfield Town.

That ended in September 2023 after which Carl briefly worked at Dubai-based United C.

1980 Steven Caldwell born, Stirling, Scotland. (1997-2004)

Central defender who prospered along with younger brother Gary under the guidance of Newcastle Academy Director Alan Irvine - although he had started out as a midfielder (and Gary as a right winger).

Having initially favoured a move to Blackburn - managed by Kenny Dalglish and with Irvine presiding over the youths Steve opted for United and was then joined by them at SJP.

Junior & reserve team football was followed by a first team debut as substitute in place of the injured Andy Griffin in a 1-0 victory at Manchester City in September 2000.

A first senior start then saw him net in a 4-3 home win over Bradford City in the League Cup, while that 2000/01 season ended with a maiden full Scotland cap - against Poland.

After appearing in the following season's Intertoto Cup for United, Steve found first team opportunities limited and moved on loan to Blackpool and later Bradford City.

Periodic first team outings then followed, but Steve was never rated by Bobby Robson and a further loan in 2004 saw him at Leeds.

A derisory contract offer from United saw Steve run his contract down and once a free agent, he moved to the mackems - getting a joint (own) goalscoring credit with Shola Ameobi in United's 3-2 SJP derby win and also playing in our 4-1 away victory.

January 2007 saw him complete a move to Burnley and he was made club captain at Turf Moor, lifting the Championship Playoff Trophy at Wembley in May 2009 as the Clarets made a return to the top-flight.

Burnley were relegated at the first attempt and that saw Caldwell move back into the Premier League with Wigan Athletic, after spending some time training with Bolton.

Steve moved to St. Andrew's in July 2011 to join up with Chris Hughton as Birmingham tried to get back into the Premier League.

And when Hughton left and Lee Clark took over as Blues boss in 2012, Caldwell remained as a first team regular until leaving for Toronto FC in July 2013.

After two seasons in the MLS, Steve retired in July 2015 and took up a corporate directorship at Toronto's parent company Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.

In February 2019, Caldwell was named President of Oakville Blue Devils FC of League1 Ontario, the third division in the Canadian soccer league system.

He then became an assistant coach of the Canada men's national soccer team in 2019, returning to TV punditry in 2024.

1995 Tom Heardman born, Gosforth.
(2012-18)

Striker who made his U18 debut for United from the bench during a 0-1 loss away to Bolton Wanderers in March 2012.

Standing 6ft 4ins tall, Tom recovered from injury to make his reserve team bow as part of an inexperienced side beaten 0-3 at home by Reading during January 2013.

Following a handful of substitute outings in the following season, the 2014/15 campaign saw Heardman feature more regularly and he was loaned out briefly to Gateshead, where he made a trio of appearances.

Missing the whole of the 2015/16 season due to injury, Tom was handed a new contract in the summer of 2016 and loaned to League Two Hartlepool United.

However, he appeared only three times before returning in January, a temporary switch to Bury in July 2017 seeing him fail to play a single game for the Shakers.

Returning to the reserves, what proved to be Tom's last Toon game saw him hit four goals in a 6-3 Premier League Cup victory over Swansea City that September.

Released by United in June 2018, he hasn't resurfaced anywhere since.

The visitors hit back and levelled, only for Richard Smellie to mark his home debut by completing a hat trick, "sending the crowd delirious with excitement" and "waving hats, sticks and umbrellas and cheering for several moments" according to local press reports.

A header and a close range effort from Supermac put United two up, before David Johnson's own goal left Bobby Robson's Town side three goals in deficit.

Johnson then netted at the right end but Newcastle were full value for the win, with
Chairman Lord Westwood commenting "on that form we would have beaten anyone in the world".

In the days of standing paddocks and pitchside fencing at Old Trafford, our Brazilian magician/conman, Mirandinha opened his goalscoring account for the Magpies.

Captured on somewhat grainy footage for posterity, presumably the Brazilian was unaware of the significance of his aeroplane -aping goal celebration at this venue...

1988 United reserves were held to a 1-1 draw by Leicester City at Fiilbert Street, thanks to a goal from Albert Craig.

In the Foxes line-up was trialist winger Lee Payne from Barnet. And while City dithered, United nipped in to secure a £25K transfer.

Six league wins out of six for United saw them move into top spot for the first time that season - a position that they would retain until the following May.

Mick Quinn scored twice against his old club and also had what seemed a perfectly good effort disallowed to deny him the match ball.

United struggled against the Bees, with Shola's equaliser saving United's blushes and taking the tie to extra time.

Craig Bellamy then finished the job, becoming the first Newcastle player ever to appear as substitute and score a hat-trick.

It also enabled the programme cover picture selector a moment of self-congratulation....

2002 A behind-closed-doors game for the reserves against Carlisle United at Whitley Park ended in a 3-2 win for the Magpies. Wayne Quinn, Diego Gavilan and Jamie McClen all netted.

2002 Ex-Magpie striker Daniel Cordone was held by police in his native Argentina on suspicion of possessing a firearm.

It was claimed that Cordone had threatened a bridal party with a gun - whether the event was in fact a shotgun wedding wasn't reported....

2004 Following a one game spell in charge of the first team against Blackburn Rovers, caretaker boss John Carver found himself out of a job as the Graeme Souness era got underway officially.

Also exiting were fellow coaches David Geddis and Kenny Wharton - although the latter was reprieved.

Preparing for their new roles the following day were Dean Saunders, Alan Murray and Phil Boersma, while reserve team boss Tommy Craig and goalkeeping coach Simon Smith stayed on initially, but left a week later.

2007 Newcastle's Michael Owen scored twice and made the other as England beat Russia 3-0 at Wembley in a vital Euro qualifier. This took him to 40 England goals in 85 games - just four behind Jimmy Greaves.

2008 Mike Ashley and Kevin Keegan met in London to try to sort out their differences but within minutes of Keegan leaving the building the LMA issued this statement:

"The League Managers Association can confirm that talks to resolve several issues were held today between Kevin Keegan and Mike Ashley of Newcastle United Football Club."

“However, the discussion failed to reach a satisfactory conclusion.”

2009
From Charlie Sale's column in The Mail:

The marathon takeover saga at Newcastle took another twist with a New York investment fund dealing direct with owner Mike Ashley in an attempt to fast-track the sale of the club.

It has been claimed their negotiations had reached the stage of a sale and purchase agreement with the Americans, having satisfied Ashley they have the necessary £100million funding to complete the deal.

But the situation — as ever during Ashley’s regime — is by no means clear as the Americans, represented by Manchester law firm Halliwells, are bypassing the official selling agents Seymour Pierce and conducting their business with Ashley’s London legal advisers Travers Smith.

The middle man in the deal is businessman Geoff Sheard, a former commercial director at Preston, who has kept in the background to avoid any publicity after an attempt to buy Sheffield Wednesday proved unsuccessful.

No more was ever heard of this "bid".

2016 Alan Shearer unveiled a statue of himself on Barrack Road, adjacent to St. James' Park but not on club land.

The nine foot bronze sculpture by Tom Maley had been commissioned in 2007 by then-NUFC Chairman Freddy Shepherd, whose family ultimately paid the claimed £250K costs.

Former Magpies Rob Lee, Kevin Keegan, Terry McDermott and Steve Harper were on hand to see "Local Hero" unveiled, a lasting tribute to the club's all-time record goalscorer.

Explaining the raised finger celebration rather than the palm that some expected, Al confirmed that the sculpture captured him immediately after his final goal for the club - against the mackems.

May 2022 then saw the statue relocated a short distance onto club land, adjacent to the Sir Bobby Robson sculpture.
