Premier League:
Nick of Tyne!

Newcastle  1  Wolves  0

Nick Woltemade was the toast of the Toon after scoring the only goal of the game to defeat Wolves at St. James' Park on Saturday afternoon.

The German debutant majestically headed into the Leazes net just before the half hour mark to give Eddie Howe's side their first win of the season against the Premier League's basement side.

The visitors looked ragged although they had three chances to take the lead early in the first half the first coming seconds after the kick-off when Rodrigo Gomes ran into the box and Nick Pope tipped his shot wide.

Pope then denied Hee-Chan Hwang before Jacob Murphy had United's first effort with a shot that flew past the left post.

Gomes went close with a shot the squirmed past Pope's right upright before Murphy somehow failed to hit the back of the net from in front of the goal but somehow hit Sam Johnstone.

Harvey Barnes went tumbling as he entered the boxbut a VAR review failed to see it as a red card or a penalty and the play continued.

Then came Woltemade's moment as Murphy crossed to the far post and the striker planted a firm header inside the post before deservedly taking the plaudits by the Milburn and Leazes corner flag.

It capped an excellent first performance from the tall forward who showed some good touches and awareness and instantly gelled with his new team mates.

Sandro Tonali was unlucky not to make it 2-0 just before half-time with a shot from the edge of the box that hit the inside of the post and bounced away. That had come after Murphy had a goal disallowed for Barnes being offside in the build-up.

After the break United dominated possession without creating many clear chances but as the game wore on and both sides made multiple substitutions there was a feeling that Wanderers could nick an undeserved equaliser.

Thankfully that wasn't the case and Pope was rarely troubled before referee Chris Kavanagh blew after six added minutes.

A memorable debut then for Woltemade and a welcome three points, although the goal will live longer in the memory than the match.

The victory lifted the Magpies into the top half of the table, although Sunday's results could change that.

Eddie Howe said:

"Massive, massive win for us. The lads performed very well. Hard-fought, disciplined, we could have scored more - but we'll take the win however it came.

"They put us under pressure in the first five minutes, but after that we got control of the game. A great cross from Murphy and great to see Nick score.

"
[Woltemade] is a very good finisher - very clever. He can get a lot of goals with his head too.

"We needed the win. With Barcelona on the horizon you don't get many chances in this league, but we're happy with the three points today."

The goalscorer said:

"It was a great debut - can't be better. We won, I scored, we did well. It's really important that we won.

"'Murph' told me be ready for the cross and it came to me beautifully.

"I didn't know what to do
[after I scored] - I was just happy!"

The hosts had taken the lead in the 29th minute through Finn Inglethorpe.

Responding to questions about the departed Alexander Isak in Friday's media call, Eddie Howe admitted in public for the first time that the player had downed tools, saying that:

"Alex and I always enjoyed a great relationship. I loved working with him and I hope he loved working with us.

"It was mutually beneficial. We helped him become the player that he in part is today, and he helped us as a team achieve some unbelievable milestones. He was part of a very successful team.

"But to give you a bit more on that, the moment he went on strike, our relationship did change. I think that was probably a turning point in our relationship.

"Communication became difficult from that point onwards. I won’t go into any more detail than that.”

The Magpies are participating in the Champions League for this fifth time, kicking off their eight game league stage games on Thursday September 18th by hosting a Barcelona side who made it to the semi-final stage last season.

Kick-off at SJP is 8pm with live coverage on TNT Sports.

Team: Jacob Ramsey is injured and Yoane Wissa looks likely to join him on the sidelines. Although still serving a domestic suspension, Anthony Gordon is available for this tie.

Newcastle's CL "A list" squad is as follows:

The "B list" selection doesn't need to submitted to UEFA until the day before each tie and can include an unlimited number of players born after January 1st 2004.

The touchline ban handed out to visiting manager Hansi Flick and his assistant Marcus Sorg has been overturned and both can occupy the away dugout.

Spanish international midfielder Gavi is set for knee surgery while defender Alejandro Balde is doubtful.

Despite pulling out of the Dutch squad due to injury, the Catalan media predict that fellow midfielder Frenkie de Jong will be available for the game against Newcastle.

Signed on a season-long loan from Manchester United, Marcus Rashford is included in Barcelona's CL selection.

Ahead of their visit to Tyneside, they host Valencia in La Liga on Sunday. Due to delays re-opening the Nou Camp following major building work, that game will take place at Barca's 6,000 capacity training ground.

They currently sit fourth in the table with two wins and a draw from the opening three fixtures.

Match report

Ex-Mag:
Barrie Thomas RIP

The death of former Magpie Barrie Thomas has been announced, at the age of 88.

Barrie was a centre forward who worked down the mines before signing for Leicester City, only for national service to halt his progress.

Joining Mansfield Town before moving on to Scunthorpe United in 1959, Thomas was top scorer in the Football League with 30 goals in 22 games when fellow Second Division side Newcastle bid a record £45,000 for him in early 1962.

The Iron opted to cash in and a deal was concluded with John McGuigan also moving from Gallowgate to the Old Showground - while both Leeds United and Manchester United made their interest known.

Debuting in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at St. James' Park, Thomas first found the net in his third game - away at Swansea - and Walter Winterbottom quickly called him up to an England training session, although he failed to make the 1962 World Cup squad.

However, his time at SJP was blighted by injury and criticism from some fans and colleagues and while netting hat tricks against Boro, Plymouth and Rotherham, he failed to fire his side to promotion.

Losing his place to Ron McGarry, Barrie reluctantly returned to Scunthorpe early in 1964. His scoring touch remained despite fitness issues and as Newcastle were celebrating promotion the following May, he netted five as the Iron beat Luton Town 8-1.

Injury ended his playing career at Barnsley, after which he had a spell managing local non-league side Measham Swifts.

Update:
Compo winner

Restocked for the new season is the Shearer bucket hat from Football Bobbles, with the 1996/97 change kit colours on one side and black & white on the reverse.

These are available to purchase here in three sizes.

The Tyneside-based company also has a brand-new range of bespoke T-shirts depicting the life and times of Newcastle's 50s hero and FA Cup winner George Robledo.

These are available to purchase here in a bewildering variety of sizes and colours.

The prize in our latest competition was a Shearer bucket hat or a Robledo T-shirt and to stand a chance of winning we asked which former Magpie played for Liverpool the last time we won a PL game against them in 2015.

It was of course James Milner and the winning entry came from Peter Cowell.

The new system is 24/24/48: 24 hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to purchase.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact those applicants directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

2025/26 CL away tickets will be €50 or less.

On This Day in History
13th September

Born Or Died:

1909 Edwin "Ray" Bowden born, Looe, Cornwall. (1937-39)

England international forward who made his name with Arsenal, winning an FA Cup and a League Championship after moving to Highbury from Plymouth Argyle in 1933.

An ankle injury restricted Ray's involvement for the Gunners and he dropped down to Division Two when United paid £5,000 for him during November 1937.

Debuting in a 3-0 win over Southampton at SJP that month, Bowden's first goal for the club came the following week during a 1-2 loss at Blackburn Rovers.

His last appearance would be an 8-1 home win over Swansea in September 1939 when he grabbed a hat-trick.

However the onset of war saw the season halted and later expunged from the records.

Bowden returned to Plymouth and ran a sports shop in the city. He died in September 1998.

1964 Paul Bodin born, Cardiff, Wales. (1991-92)

Defender who had appeared for various clubs in a decade of football before his brief loan period at SJP from Crystal Palace, during the reign of Ossie Ardiles.

Beginning his career as an apprentice at Chelsea without playing a senior game, he joined hometown club Cardiff City via a short spell with Newport County.

Three years at Ninian Park were followed by a period in the non-league game with Merthyr, Bath City and a second spell at the reformed Newport County.

Bodin's return to league football came at Swindon Town in 1988 where he played under Ardiles at the County Ground.

A move to Crystal Palace came in 1991 as the fallout from Swindon's playoff victory annulment and betting charge saw Ardiles depart for Tyneside and his squad break up.

The pair were then reunited at SJP in late 1991 with Bodin making his debut at left back in a 2-2 home draw with Port Vale.

His sixth and final game proved to be the New Years Day debacle at Roots Hall when Newcastle were walloped 0-4 by a buoyant Southend United.

Despite that, Ardiles was keen to complete a deal with Palace for Bodin, but Newcastle were unwilling or unable to commit to the £250K transfer fee the Eagles demanded.

Enter Swindon, who bought him for a second time - and saw Bodin play the best football of his career when deployed as a wing back - helping the club into the Premier League.

While at the County Ground however, Paul assured himself of an unwanted mention in Welsh football folklore for a penalty miss against Romania at Cardiff Arms Park in November 1993.

The score at that point was 1-1 and victory for the home side would have seen them qualify for the World Cup Finals for the first time since 1958. They lost 1-2.

Leaving Swindon in 1996, Bodin later played for Reading, Wycombe Wanderers and Devizes Town - also returning to former club Bath City as player manager for a time.

Installed as a youth coach back at Swindon in 2008, Bodin also had a brief stint as caretaker manager in the closing weeks of the 2010/11 season.

However his time at the Robins ended in March 2013 when diagnosed with stress that he claimed was brought on by former Town manager Paolo Di Canio.

With the threat of legal action looming, Swindon made an undisclosed out of court settlement with Bodin later that year and he officially left the club by mutual consent.

Subsequently coaching youngsters at both Southampton and Port Vale, Paul joined the Welsh FA coaching staff, overseeing the U17s before taking charge of the U21s between 2019 to 2022.

1999 Mace Goodridge born, Manchester. (2016-18)

Defensive midfielder who joined United in 2016 following his release by Manchester City, having also trialed for Leicester City.

Debuting for the U18s in a 1-0 win at the mackems in September 2016, Mace's first goal at that level secured a 2-1 victory at Wolves three months later.

A first taste of reserve team action came against Gateshead in March 2017 and Hebburn Town a month later but he failed to play competitively.

Released by Newcastle in June 2018 Mace agreed a deal with Burnley, having featured as a trialist for the Clarets at U23 level.

Mace signed a contract extension in early 2020 following his first unused bench selection for a Premier League game.

February 2021 saw him loaned out to League Two Barrow but he ended the season as a free agent when Burnley released him.

Moving into non-league with Chorley, AFC Telford and Buxton, he ended his playing career in 2023, joining Fleetwood Town as Academy Performance Analyst.

A memorable Old Trafford success for Newcastle, but Sunday Sun reporter Colin Veitch highlighted the defensive lapses of the hosts over the prowess of the Magpies.

Few home fans celebrated Tommy Reid's treble, as their side suffered a biggest-ever home defeat and remained pointless after five games, conceding 26 goals.

They would go on to lose their opening dozen games and end the season bottom of the table.

The rules of the competition allowed for two substitutes to be named, one of whom had to be a goalkeeper.

After back-to-back home games during which they had scored nine times without conceding, reality rapidly returned for United at Goodison Park.

The Toffees themselves had let in six goals in their most recent two outings, but exploited a Magpies side lacking toe injury victim Malcolm Macdonald and whose defence was once again something of a disaster area away from home.

Stuart Boam gave United an interval lead that Bob Hazell cancelled out, before the hitherto anonymous Terry Hibbitt struck the winner after a mix-up in the R's box.

Unfortunately the referee had already noted that Newcastle wanted to substitute him, so the scorer was promptly forced to leave the pitch, to be replaced by Peter Cartwright.

Brian Kilcline opened the scoring at Highfield Road against his future employers following a free kick given for a foul on Cyrille Regis.

The City striker tormented a United side without injury victims Glenn Roeder and Peter Beardsley.

Meanwhile, Joe Harvey made a scouting visit to Villa Park as Manchester United Reserves beat the hosts 7-0. His target was claimed to be Clayton Blackmore, but nothing came of it.

Fairytale stuff as Robert Lee scored the first of a hat trick of headers within the first minute to send the travelling Toon fans barmy.

Despite scaremongering by United, tickets were on sale for the away sections right up to kick-off and the official party of 3,500 was matched by the independent travellers.

Future Magpie flop Carl Cort marked his first Wombles start by opening the scoring, setting Joe Kinnear's side en route to a first Premier League success at SJP.

John Barnes debuted, Warren Barton hit a rare goal against his former employers and Tino Asprilla was named on the bench after arriving back late from international duty.

Of course this was all part of a master plan to wrong-foot Jose Mourinho - present at SJP in his role as Barcelona scout, ahead of United's home Champions League tie with the Spanish side the following Wednesday.

Alan Shearer reached the 150 goals mark for United with a brace of spot kick conversions, but referee Rob Styles took centre stage with 11 yellow and two red cards.

The first of those was for Laurent Robert for a crazy leap into the back of Tobias Linderoth, but it was 10-a-side when Gary Naysmith was dismissed just before the hour mark.

Tomasz Radzinsky equalised but United were within sight of victory until a daft challenge by Jermaine Jenas on Radzinsky allowed Duncan Ferguson to level once again from the spot.

2006 Missing from the party who flew to Estonia for the UEFA Cup tie against Levadia Tallinn was Assistant Manager Kevin Bond, given time off by the club to deal with "personal matters".

Earlier in the week, Bond's name was mentioned in connection with an imminent Panorama BBC TV programme about football transfers.

Ironically he was handed his P45 by the club while fellow Panorama "star", Sam Allardyce, got the manager's job nine months later....

United's first game following the abrupt exit of Kevin Keegan saw caretaker boss Chris Hughton in the dugout and large-scale protests outside.

There were debuts for the two players whose arrival had added to the political unrest on Barrack Road, with Xisco netting a debut goal and Nacho Gonzalez appearing off the bench.

Danny Guthrie saw red for an awful challenge on Craig Fagan, that left visiting boss Phil Brown rather inappropriately calling for that sort of tackle to be "kicked out of football".

This game saw the first appearance of the infamous "Cockney Mafia Out" banner, Charles N'Zogbia seemingly distracted by it as the Tigers swept forward to score the winner.

United's debut at Cardiff's new stadium saw them become the first side to leave there with maximum points.

Fabricio Coloccini's first Newcastle goal was enough to take his side two points clear at the top of the Championship, despite having Alan Smith "take one for the team" late on and be shown the red card.

Alan Pardew's tenure as manager looked anything but certain after a second 0-4 rout by his former employers in six months made it four league games without victory.

Assistant John Carver meanwhile became embroiled in a pre-game spat with away fans after an anti-Pardew banner was unfurled.

Newcastle went goal crazy at Loftus Road,
matching their biggest away league win since 1962 - when they hit half a dozen without reply at Walsall.

A sixth successive league and cup victory - and a fifth clean sheet in a row - was also the heaviest home defeat inflicted on the R's in their entire 96 year history.
