Champions League:
Thunderstruck

Newcastle  1  Barcelona
2

As he had done at Wembley two years earlier - and not for the first time at the Leazes End of St.J ames' Park - Marcus Rashford broke Geordie hearts on Thursday evening.

Banished from Old Trafford, the England international twice served up precision finishes within ten second half minutes to get off the mark in style for his latest club.

Heading in on 58 minutes, Rashford's stunning shot nine minutes later looked to have ended the game as a contest until Anthony Gordon halved the deficit in the closing seconds of normal time with his first European goal.

Gordon began the night leading a front three with Anthony Elanga on the right and Harvey Barnes on the left, but had moved out to the left by the time he met Jacob Murphy's low centre and clipped the ball home from 12 yards.

Last season's Champions League semi-finalists withstood early pressure on and off the field; every tackle and block from a home player greeted with roars from the stands.

However the nearest that United came to scoring during that period was a tempting cross from Elanga that Barnes reached but could only ping off 'keeper Joan Garcia.

The visitors began to dominate possession more and more before half time and continued after the interval without creating clear scoring chances until Rashford's brace.

Attempting to find a way back into the tie after falling behind, Eddie Howe made a quartet of replacements that brought Nick Woltemade on at centre forward - Fabian Schar also coming off after being struck in the face.

That saw Malick Thiaw appear for only his second outing as a Magpie and the defender instantly looked at home with timely touches at both ends of the field.

Rashford's superb second goal looked decisive and the Magpies continued to struggle getting hold of the ball; the time they spent out of possession leading to a lack of composure when belatedly regaining it.

There's no disgrace in defeat to such prestigious opposition and the nature of this competition means that the result wasn't catastrophic, but on a night when United needed to make the most of whatever chances came their way, their current issues with creating and scoring goals were evident.

Gordon's strike will hopefully boost his confidence, but the injury to Yoane Wissa puts pressure on the rest of the side to compensate for his absence. It's not quite happened yet.

Team: Pope, Trippier (Botman 76), Livramento, Schar (Thiaw 63), Burn, Joelinton (Willock 62), Guimaraes, Tonali, Gordon, Barnes (Woltemade 62), Elanga (J.Murphy 63).
Subs n/u: Ramsdale, M.Thompson, Hall, Krafth, L.Miley, A.Murphy, Osula.

Booked: Joelinton, Burn.

Goal: Gordon 90.

FCB: Joan Garcia, Kounde, Martin (Garcia 81), Araujo, Cubarsi (Torres 69), de Jong, Pedri, Raphinha, Lopez (Casado 90+3), Rashford, Lewandowski (Christensen 70).
Subs n/u: Bardghji, Bernal, Fernandez, Kochen, Olmo, Szczensy, Torrents.

Booked: Martin, Lopez, de Jong.

Goals: Rashford 58, 67.

Crowd: 52,084 including just 800 travelling supporters.

Former Magpies present included Tino Asprilla, John Beresford, Olivier Bernard, Shay Given and Steve Howey.

Rafa Benitez was also there, on punditry duties.

Flanked by banners displaying the words "Newcastle United" "Back in Black & White", Wor Flags produced their first display featuring ropes and pulleys, unfurled with AC/DC blaring out of the SJP PA.

Volunteers meanwhile spent many hours laying out individual flags across the East Stand, Gallowgate End and Leazes End, spelling out the letters NUFC. Absolutely superb.

Eddie Howe said:

"Yeah, disappointed. I think we were really in the game. We were never out of it.

"The chances were there in that first half but against teams like this there's never too many - and that's what's going to happen.

"We kept going till the end - one goal was always going to change the mood. They managed the extra time really well. we were desperate for the ball and we couldn't get it off them.

"It was a whole-hearted, gutsy display from us - we just lacked the quality at the end of it.

"We wanted to create a difficult environment with high-octane football. I think it was there. We didn't get the bounce of the ball off the presses.

"The chances were there in the first half. Against teams like this you won't get many. We got punished.

"A lot of commitment, a lot of heart from the players. I thought it was a good performance without being a great one and, to beat Barcelona, it needs to be a great one.

"We had the chances. Two big moments in the first half that we didn't take and, ultimately, when you concede the first goal, the game swings on that moment.

"There was no lacking in terms of heart and courage. We can be critical of a couple of things we could have done better but, ultimately, we will analyse it, try and improve and try and grow from this experience."

On starting with Nick Woltemade on the bench:

"I can't live in that world, I have to make decisions for the benefit of the player sometimes.

"It was a really difficult one for Nick, of course any player would want to start every game but I have to try to manage him into the team.

And make sure he stays fit and that was always at the heart of this decision. Knowing that we have Anthony (Gordon) suspended for the next game as well.

"It is the same for Jacob Murphy as well, he is nursing an achilles problem and we just want to keep the majority of the squad as fit and healthy for as long as possible."

On Fabian Schar's fitness:

"I’ve got no more information right no. I’m in the hands of the doctors. The only message I had was that he was okay to continue, then it became clear that he couldn’t.”

On the Barcelona goals:

"We can do better with both. On the first one, it was disappointing he was allowed the cross. The second one was an unbelievable finish.

"When the dust settles we'll look back differently. These nights are only magical if you win and we failed on that objective - we'll learn from nights like this."

On Sunday's game at Bournemouth:

"The process is the same. I don’t think there are massive new learnings. The biggest issue is psychological rather than physical — the high of tonight, the emotion, and then having to go again in a tough away league game.

"That’s the challenge - every European team faces it, and that’s why these campaigns are harder than just Premier League football. This will be our first test of that this season, and hopefully we can rise to it.”

2025/26:
Bournemouth (a)

The Magpies return to Premier League action at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday. It's a 2pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports.

Team:
Anthony Gordon serves the third and final game of his domestic ban while Jacob Ramsey and Yoane Wissa remain sidelined through injury. Both are pencilled in for returns when United visit Brighton on October 18th.

Following his replacement against Barcelona, it's expected that Fabian Schar will miss this game and the visits of Bradford City and Arsenal due to concussion protocols.

There's also a doubt over Kieran Trippier after he limped off during Thursday's Champions League defeat.

AFCB:
Enes Ünal and Adam Smith are out but Ryan Christie and Bafode Diakite are expected to be in the squad.

The Cherries have won three of their four PL games so far this season, losing the other. Maximum points came from home wins over Wolves and Brighton, with another success at Spurs and defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

While Newcastle had the not insubstantial matter of a Champions League tie against Barcelona on Thursday, Andoni Iraola's side enjoyed a free week as a consequence of their Carabao Cup Second Round defeat by Brentford.

Referee: Robert Jones - first appointment of the season involving Newcastle for the Merseyside whistler, last seen taking charge of our 3-0 win at Leicester City in April.

Update:
U18 fixture alteration

In a change to their schedule, Newcastle's U18 side won't travel to face Manchester City on Saturday - with that game now rescheduled to January 31st.

Chris Moore's young Magpies return to domestic league action against Stoke City at Little Benton on Saturday week, September 27th. That's an 11am kick-off.

Latest:
CL round-up

Here's how our Champions League opponents fared in the first week of the competition:

Union SG hit the ground running on Tuesday, securing a 3-1 victory at PSV Eindhoven in their very first Champions League fixture. The Belgians were captained by former Hartlepool United defender Christian Burgess.

A 3-2 away win for Qarabag against Benfica on Tuesday prompted the Lisbon side to dismiss coach Bruno Lage - paving the way for Jose Mourinho's return to the real Stadium of Light - and a trip to Tyneside next month.

Athletic Bilbao meanwhile began their League Stage participation with a 0-2 home defeat to Arsenal, while Marseille lost by the odd goal in three at Real Madrid.

Reigning champions PSG defeated Atalanta 4-0 on Wednesday, with Bayer Leverkusen sharing four goals on Thursday with Copenhagen. The Bundesliga side replaced coach Erik ten Hag with Kasper Hjulmand in recent days.

Moving on to the U19 competition that mirrors the senior fixtures, of the sides that Newcastle will face after Barcelona, Benfica won 7-1, Bilbao won 3-1, Union lost 2-6 and Marseille lost 2-3. Leverkusen play on Thursday.

PS: Ex-Magpie Lloyd Kelly was an unlikely goalscoring hero for Juventus on Tuesday, heading home in second half added time to secure a 4-4 draw with Borussia Dortmund.

The defender had also netted in Saturday's 4-3 victory over Inter Milan in Serie A, his first goals for the club.

U19s narrow defeat

Newcastle U19s  2  Barcelona U19s  3

Newcastle's U19 side began their UEFA U19 Youth League fixtures on Thursday afternoon with the toughest possible test - that of facing defending champions Barcelona.

And after conceding three times in the first half, the youngsters fought back with two goals of their own and came close to levelling in added time.

The visitors took the lead in the 24th minute when a low centre from the left side of the box by Oscar Gistau was knocked in by Xavi Espart.

Magpies 'keeper George Mair made a good parry to deny Gistau in the 36th minute but Barca extended their lead a minute before the break when Gistau was left unattended and scooped a first time shot home.

That soon became 0-3 in the third minute of first half added time as Gistau got his second when he sent a poor clearance back over the head of Mair from 30 yards out.

The young Magpies got one back six minutes into the second period when they were awarded a free-kick just outside the box and it was played short to Leo Shahar who finished well.

United pulled another goal back in the 81st minute when substitute Kacey Wooster burst into the box and netted with a low effort.

The comeback was almost complete in the fourth and final minute of added time but Sean Neave headed wide.

Team: Mair, Bailey, Charlton, Fitzgerald (Waddani 69), Munda (Seung-soo 69), Brayson (Alabi 52), Shahar, Neave, Watts (Epia 59), Johnson, Finneran (Wooster 69).
Subs n/u: Dowell, Yildiz, Goodbrand, Bloomer.

Booked: Bailey, Neave, Charlton.

Subs n/u: Bonfill, Oertli, Avila, Tunkara.

Booked: Espart, Cuenca, Rodriguez.

Crowd: 657.

Appearing for the visitors was Shane Kluivert, son of former Magpie and Barca striker Patrick, who was at the game.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact those applicants directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

2025/26 CL away tickets will be €50 or less.

On This Day in History
19th September

Born Or Died:

1919 Arnold Grundy born, Whickham.
(1936-44)

Left half who joined Newcastle in 1933 as 14 year old, working in the club offices for two years and playing for Dunston CWS until signing professional terms.

An injury to Bill Imrie saw Arnold make his senior debut for United aged 17 in the 2-0 home win over Bradford City that concluded the 1936/37 season.

A 4-1 loss at Luton Town 12 months later was to be Grundy's second and final first team appearance.

The outbreak of World War II saw a move to Brighton and Hove Albion break down but by November 1939 he was playing over the River Tyne for Gateshead.

Guesting for Fulham, Liverpool, Tranmere Rovers and Southport in the War Leagues, Arnold later played for Leyton Orient, Lincoln City (trial), Chingford, Wisbech Town, Bury Town and Newmarket Town.

He later took charge of Eastern Counties League Newmarket with fellow SJP old boy Eddie Connelly.

1920 Ronald Sales born, South Shields. (1942-47)

Defender who played for Westoe Boys, Shields Infirmary, South Shields Boys and Reyrolle's before joining Newcastle United.

Appearing in war time games and also at reserve level, Ronnie was transferred to Leyton Orient in 1947, remaining at Brisbane Road for two years.

Beset by injury, a brief switch to Colchester United saw Sales play just once before returning to the North East with Hartlepools United in August 1950.

Fitness issues also limited his availability and caused him to retire as professional, playing on with South Shields.

His death was recorded during August 1995.

1939 Brian Wright
born, Sunderland.
(1956-63)

Defender/midfielder who was drafted into the first team after coming through academy and reserve ranks, making his senior bow in a 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest in April 1960.

An occasional starter in the first team under Charlie Mitten as United were relegated in 1961, Brian featured more often under Norman Smith the following season in Division Two.

However his days were numbered when Joe Harvey became manager in 1962, departing at the end of that season just before Ollie Burton arrived from Norwich.

Brian went on to become a regular with Peterborough United, playing over 300 games returning to his hometown with Posh in 1967 in a 1-7 FA Cup loss at Roker Park.

Leaving London Road in 1972, he ended his playing career at Scarborough, before returning to live on his native wearside.

1944 Eric Ross born, Belfast, Northern Ireland. (1967-69)

A bespectacled left-sided midfielder (who later wore contact lenses on the field), Eric joined United for £5,250 from Glentoran in 1967, having spent that summer in the USA playing for Detroit Cougars.

Coming to prominence as part of the Glens squad who drew 1-1 and 0-0 with a Benfica side including Eusebio in the European Cup, Ross joined a Northern Ireland enclave at United, including Iam McFaul, David Craig and John Cowan.

Like the latter though, he was a rare starter at first team level and after debuting in a League Cup defeat at Lincoln, made just one league start in his first season, at Fulham.

The following campaign was little better, as he lost his place in the side after an opening day draw at home to West Ham, making a fourth and final senior appearance in the League Cup, against Southampton.

Without a win in his four first team outings, Eric became a reserve team regular and was capped at full international level by Northern Ireland in September 1968 against Israel.

However he does appear in the official club photograph of the 1968/69 Fairs Cup team, despite playing no part in that campaign - dragged in to the shot by Joe Harvey as the back row looked uneven....

A £15,000 move to Northampton Town in October 1969 followed and Ross was part of the Cobblers side humbled 2-8 in an FA Cup tie by Manchester United; fellow Belfast boy George Best scoring six times.

A loan spell at Hartlepool United was followed by a stint playing in Canada and Eric returned to the region in 1976 to play for local amateur side North Shields.

Emigrating to Canada, Ross later settled in Vancouver and became an estate agent.

1962 Gary Brazil born, Tunbridge Wells.
(1989-90)

Forward who began his playing career as an apprentice at Crystal Palace, moving on to Sheffield United in 1980 and then joining Preston North End in 1986 after a loan spell with Port Vale.

Eventually establishing himself at Deepdale after being loaned out to Mansfield Town, Gary arriving at SJP in February 1989 in a part exchange deal with Ian Bogie and £100K heading to Deepdale.

Debuting in a 2-1 win at Coventry City, played seven times in the First Division without scoring but struggled with injury towards the end of a season that ended in United's relegation.

And before a ball was kicked in Division Two, Brazil fell further back in the forward pecking order after the signings of Mark McGhee and Mick Quinn.

His ill-fated time in Toon then took another wrong turning, when a stray ball broke his nose during a squad golfing day.

Most often deployed as a substitute at SJP, Gary opted to join Fulham after failing to break into the first team at the start of the 1990/91 season.

That move soon became permanent and he was to enjoy six years with the Cottagers before ending his playing days at Cambridge United, Barnet and non-league sides Slough Town and St.Albans City.

Brazil joined Notts County in 1997, recruited by then-Magpies boss Sam Allardyce to join the youth coaching staff.

In a seven year stint at Meadow Lane he also became manager, served as assistant boss and finally reverted to youth coaching.

A brief stint at Doncaster Rovers in 2004 was followed by a role with the FA before Brazil returned to Craven Cottage as Fulham's U18 Academy coach.

Leaving Fulham in 2011 to work for the Premier League in the Midlands, closer to his Nottingham home, Gary became Youth team coach at Forest in May 2012.

Serving briefly as caretaker boss of the first team in 2014 before Stuart Pearce was appointed, Brazil then returned to his role of Forest Academy manager.

A further interim spell in charge of Forest followed in January 2017, after which Gary continued as Academy head until leaving in 2023 when his contract ended.

He then joined the FA as head of men's recruitment and retention.

2024 saw his son Jack appointed U16s coach at Newcastle United.

1978 Sean Hessey born, Whiston.
(1997)

Defender released by Liverpool's Academy in March 1997 along with Terry Burghall, both accepting invites from Kenny Dalglish to train with Newcastle juniors.

However, that failed to work out and a trial at Burnley was also fruitless before spells at Leeds United and Wigan Athletic.

A senior debut came during March 1998 in the colours of Huddersfield Town against Reading - with on-loan Magpie Steve Harper in goal for the Terriers.

Late transfers took Sean to Kilmarnock, Blackpool, Chester, Macclesfield Town and
Accrington Stanley - scoring his firs goal for the latter in a League Cup tie against Newcastle in August 2010.

Subsequently playing for Barrow, Prestatyn Town and Marine, he managed the latter between 2015 and 2017.

Holding a degree in Psychotherapy & Counselling, Hessey worked as a therapist and counsellor in the Widnes area.

1979
Death of Monte Wilkinson, 71.

1983 Damon Robson born, Chester-le- Street. (1999-2003)

Midfielder & England youth international who appeared at junior and reserve team level but failed to secure a professional contract and was released.

Playing for Bristol City in a short trial, Damon opted to remain in the North East and began a career in the Northern League with his hometown club, Chester-le-Street.

Later moves took him to Bishop Auckland and Horden Colliery Welfare, before making the switch to Whitley Bay in 2006.

Damon collected an FA Vase winner's medal at Wembley Stadium in 2009 after Bay beat Glossop North End 2-0 and returned to repeat the feat 12 months later, after an awesome 6-1 demolition of Wroxham.

Incredibly Bay made it a hat-trick of Vase successes in 2011 and Robson captained the side as they beat Coalville Town 3-2. He left Hillheads in 2012 and retired.

1986 Leon Best born, Nottingham.
(2010-12)

A deadline day acquisition from Coventry City in January 2010, this Republic of Ireland international striker began his playing career with Southampton, debuting against United at St.Mary's in September 2004.

Loan spells at QPR, Sheffield Wednesday, Bournemouth and Yeovil Town then followed for the player who had been with Notts County as a youngster.

Leon then made the switch from the Saints to Coventry City in summer of 2007, lining up against United in the 2009/10 season with Toon loanee Patrick Van Aanholt.

His Magpies bow came as a substitute in a 5-1 home win over Cardiff City in February 2010 and he would feature during the rest of that promotion season without scoring.

Netting at both Carlisle United and against PSV Eindhoven at SJP in pre-season, an ankle injury then sidelined Leon from the opening weeks of Newcastle’s Premier League return.

However, injuries to other strikers saw him make a number of starts; hitting a hat-trick against West Ham, one of the comeback goals against Arsenal and strikes against Birmingham and Everton after Andy Carroll had departed.

The 2011/12 season saw that form continue, grabbing both goals in the win over Fulham and a vital equaliser at Villa Park.

First recognised by Ireland at U21 level in March 2008, Leon made his full international debut in a friendly against Nigeria at Craven Cottage in May 2009.

The arrival of Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse saw Best surplus to requirements at SJP and he departed for Blackburn Rovers for a £3m fee in July 2012.

However, a ligament injury in pre-season delayed his competitive debut until March 2013.

Unable to claim a regular first team place at Ewood Park he was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday in February 2014, later making similarly unproductive temporary switches to Derby County and Brighton.

Agreeing a deal with Rovers to terminate his contract 12 months early, Best went on trial at QPR and Huddersfield Town before Rotherham United signed him in November 2015.

Four goals helped the Millers avoid relegation but Leon found himself a free agent again in 2016, turning up at West Bromwich Albion and Ipswich Town and signing a one-year deal with the latter.

12 non-scoring games including a visit to SJP when he was subbed at half-time followed before he again become a free agent in May 2017.

By then though he had other things on his mind; surgery to correct a previous hernia problem revealing an abscess that required two operations to remove and four days recovering in intensive care.

Recovering sufficiently to join in training with Charlton Athletic that October, Leon signed a short-term contract but a serious knee injury against Gillingham on New Years Day 2018 ended his playing days.

1986 Charlie Barnett born, Liverpool.
(2007)

Midfielder whose Newcastle career consisted of a 24 minute cameo in a pre-season home game against Juventus during July 2007.

Former England U16 youth international Barnett had quit Liverpool after helping them to successive FA Youth Cup victories - the second including a fine strike in a Semi-Final tie at SJP.

Appearing for United reserves against Newcastle Benfield he then made the senior squad for the Juventus game - due in part to the unavailability of players such as Kazenga LuaLua, who were away with the junior side at a tournament.

Barnett wasn't retained and within days was with Blackburn Rovers reserves as a trialist before turning up at Ipswich Town.

Signing for Tranmere Rovers in summer 2008, Charlie spent two years at Prenton Park before joining Accrington Stanley via a brief trial spell in Scotland at Falkirk.

Facing Newcastle in the League Cup during August 2010, he completed a century of games for Accrington before moving on in 2014 to AFC Telford and Marine in 2016.

Retiring from playing, Charlie graduated from the University of Salford with a Degree in Physiotherapy during 2017.

1990 Kieran Trippier born, Bury.
(2022-present)

The first senior signing of the post-Mike Ashley era at Newcastle was confirmed in early January 2022, a £12m fee bringing the 31 year-old England international right back in from Atletico Madrid.

An inauspicious bow in an FA Cup defeat by Cambridge United was soon forgotten as Trippier became integral to the success of United, with a draw and three victories in his opening four PL outings.

Two of those included trademark free kicks, but a broken foot sustained against Aston Villa
then
saw him miss 12 games.

His return to action was in a far more buoyant and effective side - something he'd contributed to despite his
injury - credited with helping build a more effective mindset
across the squad.

Fully fit for the following season, Trippier then further increased his standing on Tyneside thanks to a dazzling free kick in a 3-3 home draw with Manchester City.

A full house of 38 Premier League starts helped United return to Champions League competition after the disappointment of leading the side at Wembley in the League Cup Final loss to Manchester United.

The increased demands on the Magpies squad the following season coupled with injury issues saw a clearly frustrated Trippier argue with a fan following a Premier League loss at Bournemouth.

Talk of off-field issues then resurfaced after United's League Cup exit at Chelsea; Kieran at fault for a late equaliser and then missing his kick in the shootout.

Speculation over a possible departure from SJP in the January 2024 window proved unfounded, but a calf problem saw him miss nine games including the FA Cup Quarter Final exit at Manchester City.

Regaining fitness at the tail end of the season, further rumours of a transfer came to nothing but he took some time to regain his right back place from Tino Livramento - whose move to the other flank was aided by injury to Lewis Hall.

Appearing in the Carabao Cup Final victory over Liverpool, Trippier then joined Bruno Guimaraes and Jamaal Lascelles for the trophy lift at Wembley Stadium.

Trippier's playing career began as a nine year old at Manchester City's Academy although he didn't play a senior game for them and made his senior debut on loan at Barnsley in 2010.

Following a second spell at Oakwelll, 2011 saw Trippier loaned to Championship side Burnley
- then managed by Eddie Howe.

Making a permanent move to Turf Moor, he helped the Clarets win promotion to the Premier League in 2014, making a £3.5m switch to Spurs the following year.

123 appearances for the Cockerels followed,
ending in a 0-1 loss to Liverpool in the 2019 Champions League Final at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

And within weeks that was his new home, following a £20m transfer to Atletico.

Internationally, Kieran's first call-up came for England U18s in 2007, featuring in a friendly against Ghana with fellow future Magpies Dan Gosling and Danny Rose.

Progress to the senior team via U19, U20 and U21 caps followed, making a senior bow in a friendly against France during June 2017.

In the side that made it to the last four of the 2018 World Cup Finals just over a year later, his maiden goal couldn't prevent a 1-2 loss to Croatia in the Semi-Final.

Starting in the Euro 2020 Final against Italy at Wembley in July 2021, Trippier was substituted and took no part in extra time or penalty shootout defeat.

He played his part in the 2024 Euros campaign that saw England defeated by Spain in the final, playing in the left back spot vacated by the injured Luke Shaw.

On the bench for that final defeat, Kieran then confirmed his international retirement after a career spanning 54 senior caps.

Newcastle's ailing defence were once again in trouble, making it 17 goals conceded in five games.

Ted Ditchburn saved Jackie Milburn's penalty kick five minutes after Sonny Walters had opened the scoring for the visitors.

To complete United's misery, an ankle problem for Vic Keeble would rule him out for the next 19 league and cup games.

"Harassing night for dainty United"
was the Journal headline after this bruising midweek encounter under the Gallowgate floodlights.

There was a senior debut for recent signing George Eastham, after a run of decent reserve displays and he laid on Vic Keeble's opener.

An under-strength Hearts side included several youngsters, with 17 year-old Gordon Marshall in goal against his future employers.

Team: Simpson, Keith, Batty, Keery, Stokoe, Crowe, Milburn, Eastham, Keeble, Hannah, Punton.

Another poor home showing saw Newcastle redouble their efforts to land Third Lanark's Dave Hilley.

Manager Charlie Mitten called it "a hopeless situation...carrying too much dead wood. You cannot win a Classic race with so many selling-platers."

He also voiced his distaste of the influence of club directors on team selection, commenting: "against my better judgement team switches have been made which I know to be useless."

He'd been in a similar situation five years earlier, but was rejected by the Magpies as a 12 year-old.

Fairytale stuff as Bobby Robson's first home game in charge saw his side win in the Premier League at the eighth attempt.

Aaron Hughes got things underway with his first goal for the club, having persuaded Bobby that he was up to the task of replacing the suspended Nicos Dabizas - and a loan deal for veteran defender Colin Hendry wasn't needed.

Enter Alan Shearer, who equalled Andy Cole's Premiership scoring record (for Manchester United against Ipswich Town) and proceeded to complete a 12 minute hat trick at the Gallowgate End.

What unused Owls substitute 'keeper made of it all wasn't recorded - but Pavel Srnicek was probably trying not to celebrate...

More than 32 years had passed since Supermac and Stewy Barrowclough scored in a 2-1 win at The Dell before this success.

The victory was United's first anywhere on their Premiership travels since October 2003 - ending a winless run of 16 games.

Saints old boy Alan Shearer gave us the lead - although the Premier League misers credited it as a David Prutton OG.
