2025/26:
Bournemouth (a)

Newcastle return to Premier League action at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday. It's a 2pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports.

The Magpies are winless in all six Premier League meetings with the Cherries on Tyneside and in Dorset since Eddie Howe left his post as Bournemouth boss back in 2020.

Howe has led United to victory over his former club once - a 1-0 success at SJP in the Carabao Cup during 2022.

Team:
Anthony Gordon serves the third and final game of his domestic ban while Jacob Ramsey and Yoane Wissa remain sidelined through injury. Both are pencilled in for returns when United visit Brighton on October 18th.

Following his replacement against Barcelona, Fabian Schar will miss this game and the visits of Bradford City and Arsenal due to concussion protocols. His absence at the Vitality Stadium leaves him on 199 PL games for United.

There's also a doubt over Kieran Trippier after he limped off during Thursday's Champions League defeat.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 15/8
The draw 12/5
AFCB win 11/8

New customers receive a £20 bet when staking £5 (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

AFCB:
Enes Ünal and Adam Smith are out but Ryan Christie and Bafode Diakite are expected to be in the squad.

The Cherries have won three of their four PL games so far this season, losing the other. Maximum points came from home wins over Wolves and Brighton, with another success at Spurs and defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

While Newcastle had the not insubstantial matter of a Champions League tie against Barcelona on Thursday, Andoni Iraola's side enjoyed a free week as a consequence of their Carabao Cup Second Round defeat by Brentford.

Referee: Robert Jones - first appointment of the season involving Newcastle for the Merseyside whistler, last seen taking charge of our 3-0 win at Leicester City in April.

U19s narrow defeat

Newcastle U19s  2  Barcelona U19s  3

Newcastle's U19 side began their UEFA U19 Youth League fixtures on Thursday afternoon with the toughest possible test - that of facing defending champions Barcelona.

And after conceding three times in the first half, the youngsters fought back with two goals of their own and came close to levelling in added time.

The visitors took the lead in the 24th minute when a low centre from the left side of the box by Oscar Gistau was knocked in by Xavi Espart.

Magpies 'keeper George Mair made a good parry to deny Gistau in the 36th minute but Barca extended their lead a minute before the break when Gistau was left unattended and scooped a first time shot home.

That soon became 0-3 in the third minute of first half added time as Gistau got his second when he sent a poor clearance back over the head of Mair from 30 yards out.

The young Magpies got one back six minutes into the second period when they were awarded a free-kick just outside the box and it was played short to Leo Shahar who finished well.

United pulled another goal back in the 81st minute when substitute Kacey Wooster burst into the box and netted with a low effort.

The comeback was almost complete in the fourth and final minute of added time but Sean Neave headed wide.

Team: Mair, Bailey, Charlton, Fitzgerald (Waddani 69), Munda (Seung-soo 69), Brayson (Alabi 52), Shahar, Neave, Watts (Epia 59), Johnson, Finneran (Wooster 69).
Subs n/u: Dowell, Yildiz, Goodbrand, Bloomer.

Booked: Bailey, Neave, Charlton.

Subs n/u: Bonfill, Oertli, Avila, Tunkara.

Booked: Espart, Cuenca, Rodriguez.

Crowd: 657.

Appearing for the visitors was Shane Kluivert, son of former Magpie and Barca striker Patrick, who was at the game.

Update:
CL round-up

Here's how our Champions League opponents fared in the first week of the competition:

Union SG hit the ground running on Tuesday, securing a 3-1 victory at PSV Eindhoven in their very first Champions League fixture. The Belgians were captained by former Hartlepool United defender Christian Burgess.

A 3-2 away win for Qarabag against Benfica on Tuesday prompted the Lisbon side to dismiss coach Bruno Lage - paving the way for Jose Mourinho's return to the real Stadium of Light - and a trip to Tyneside next month.

Athletic Bilbao meanwhile began their League Stage participation with a 0-2 home defeat to Arsenal, while Marseille lost by the odd goal in three at Real Madrid.

Reigning champions PSG defeated Atalanta 4-0 on Wednesday, with Bayer Leverkusen sharing four goals on Thursday with Copenhagen. The Bundesliga side replaced coach Erik ten Hag with Kasper Hjulmand in recent days.

Moving on to the U19 competition that mirrors the senior fixtures, of the sides that Newcastle will face after Barcelona, Benfica won 7-1, Bilbao won 3-1, Union lost 2-6 and Marseille lost 2-3. Leverkusen play on Thursday.

PS: Ex-Magpie Lloyd Kelly was an unlikely goalscoring hero for Juventus on Tuesday, heading home in second half added time to secure a 4-4 draw with Borussia Dortmund.

The defender had also netted in last Saturday's 4-3 victory over Inter Milan in Serie A, his first goals for the club.

2025/26:

The new system is 24/24/48: 24 hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to purchase.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact those applicants directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

2025/26 CL away tickets will be €50 or less.

On This Day in History
20th September

Born Or Died:

1910 Joe Ford born, Edinburgh, Scotland.
(1931-34)

Diminutive forward who joined United from Scottish minnows Rosewell Rosedale (now playing as Whitehill Welfare) in May 1931.

A regular scorer at reserve team level for the Magpies, Ford netted both goals in a senior side friendly success against Hearts back in his native Edinburgh.

That was in September 1931 and the following January his chance came when selected in place of fellow Scot Duncan Hutchison for a home game with Grimsby.

However, Ford sustained a double leg break in a collision with the Mariners 'keeper during the game and would never get another first team opportunity at Gallowgate.

Returning to Scotland with Partick Thistle, Ford later played for Leith Athletic, Gala and another Edinburgh side, Benford.

Serving in the Royal Navy during World War II, Joe worked in the brewing industry and passed away in April 1951 - a victim of TB.

1927 William Ronald Anderson born, Ponteland.(1946-48)

Goalkeeper who joined United in October 1946 from Throckley Colliery, where he had worked as a miner and turned out for their Welfare side.

Bill's sole senior outing as a Magpie came when deputising for Jack Fairbrother in a 1-1 home draw with Leicester City in April 1947.

Going on to appear for Annfield Plain, he later lived in Peterlee. His death was reported in 1995.

Three days after the epic 3-2 home win over Barcelona, a fine shot from John Barnes gave him his first Toon goal.

That was especially sweet for the veteran, who was booed by home fans after choosing to join Newcastle some weeks earlier, rather than become a Hammer.

For much of the afternoon though, visiting goalkeeper Shay Given was all that stood between the home side an three points

A wedding prevented one half of NUFC.com attending, with the groom a big Hammers fan. Suffice to say that regular updates from a pocket radio punctuated proceedings...

Bobby Robson fielded his strongest XI at a soggy SJP, desperate to prevent a fourth successive home loss and third blank score sheet.

The former was avoided but unfortunately the latter was not, as a first Premiership victory eluded United yet again.

Bobby Robson romanticists may be interested to know the point still left us in the relegation zone in 18th, with only Middlesbrough and Wolves below us....

2005 A Newcastle Academy XI won 1-0 at Chester-le-Street's Moor Park home.

Staged ahead of the home side's FA Youth Cup tie against Farsley Celtic, United helped the non-league youngsters gain experience of playing under floodlights.

Ahead when Marc Walton profited from a goalkeeping error to walk the ball into the net from close range, Newcastle kept the hosts at bay for the rest of the game.

Goalkeeper Steve Harper's return to action proved to be memorable for the wrong reason, after Xabi Alonso thumped the ball over his head from 60 yards at The Kop End.

Harper slipped as he back-pedalled to catch the long-range missile and as he grasped at thin air, the ball sailed past his left hand and over the line.

But it wasn't just a tale of Alonso's spectacular strike, four decent penalty claims were all denied by referee, Mark Halsey - three of which were ours.

Halsey also missed Celestine Babayaro's assault on Dirk Kuyt but video evidence later saw the FA charge the Newcastle defender, who copped a three match ban.

2011 Newcastle's second string debuted at the B2net Stadium of Chesterfield in an afternoon friendly, impeccably timed to allow those fans daft enough to watch it to attend en route to the City Ground.

The Spireites took advantage of an early penalty miss by Sam Adjei and went ahead when goalkeeper Ole Soderberg could only help a Scott Boden header into the net, following a left wing cross.

United were level before half time, thanks to midfielder Yven Moyo. It ended 1-1.

It was the fourth and final time that the Magpies had been in front in the tie, having let Forest back into the game twice in normal time and once in the extra half hour.

Thankfully though, penalties were avoided and Steve McClaren's Championship side bowed out as Newcastle made it seven games unbeaten in all competitions.

United failed to win in the Premier League at the fifth time of asking, but Papiss Cisse's late brace turned boos to cheers.

The striker came off the bench for his first appearance of the season, but there was as much happening off the field as on it.

Having departed for Hull on loan days earlier, Hatem Ben Arfa watched from the stand while organised fan protests against Alan Pardew continued.

A certain Steve Bruce occupied the visiting dugout, while future Magpie Mo Diame scored the second Tigers goal.

Home players wore training tops in tribute to cancer victim Jonas Gutierrez, Cisse unveiling a T-shirt with the motto "always looking forward Jonas" after netting.
