Bournemouth  0  Newcastle  0

Newcastle returned to Premier League action at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday afternoon and the scoreless away run continued; now three in a row after the stalemates at Aston Villa and Leeds United.

Eddie Howe made seven changes to the side that faced Barcelona on Thursday with Lewis Hall, Malick Thiaw, Lewis Miley and Joe Willock making their first Premier League starts of the season.

That saw Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Harvey Barnes all on the bench, as was Anthony Elanga who had started against Barcelona.

Nick Pope used his feet to save from Alejandro Jimenez early on and Jacob Murphy had a near post effort smothered by Djordje Petrovic.

Then David Brooks had a goal disallowed after the linesman flagged which was eventually confirmed by VAR which also confirmed that Sandro Tonali wasn't guilty of a handball from a corner flicked on by Sven Botman.

The Italian fired an effort that flew over the bar at the other end but as the half wore on there were less and less threats on goal.

After the break, the main talking point for United was when Nick Woltemade clearly had his shirt pulled by Bafode Diakite in the box but after referee Rob Jones didn't give the decision, VAR didn't overturn it.

Thiaw was booked for a deliberate handball and minutes later was lucky not to get a second yellow when he upended Ryan Christie and thankfully the home side made a mess of the free-kick.

The Cherries had another chance from a set-piece on the edge of the box but substitute Justin Kluivert's low shot was saved by Pope as the game petered out to its scoreless conclusion.

That left the Magpies in 13th position which was where they remained after the final game of the weekend.

Team:
Pope, Livramento, Thiaw (Lascelles 84), Botman, Burn, Hall, L.Miley, Tonali, J.Murphy (Elanga 62), Willock (Barnes 62)
, Woltemade (Osula 84).
Subs n/u: Ramsdale, Trippier, Krafth, Joelinton, Guimaraes.

Booked: Thiaw.

AFCB: Petrovic, Jimenez (Hill 46), Diakite, Senesi, Truffert, Adams, Scott (Christie 63), Semenyo, Tavernier (Adli 75) , Brooks (Kluivert 63), Evanilson.
Subs n/u: Dennis, Doak, Kroupi, Milosavljevic, Soler.

Booked: Jimenez, Diakite
.

Crowd: 11,212 including a sold out away section.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

"We showed the strength of our squad today because I did think it was a good performance without being a match-winning one.

"We used a lot of different players, so that's a really positive sign.

"I think there were some really good things within our performance.

"Defensively, we were really good. You want to see the team defending our box well, hard to play against, strong, robust, and I think we were all those things.

"Obviously, the concern for us is that we weren't free-flowing in creating the amount of chances we would want, but it's a very difficult place to come. I think a point here is a good result.

"If you look at the games we've played, it's not by luck that we've kept these clean sheets.

"Yes, Nick (Pope) made a couple of good saves, but it was the performance of the team that was cohesive and minimised space for them.

"We weren't as aggressive, but it was a mixture of Wednesday and getting the best out of our players.

"We pride ourselves on scoring goals and being an attacking team, but we're evolving as a team.

"We're not going to be the same team as last year. We need to find different ways to score and attack, but we have the players to do it.

"We know Bournemouth are a really good team. We limited them to long shots and Nick made some good saves.  We didn't get our attacking game going.

"It's not good. You want to create chances and clear-cut chances. I didn't feel that in our performance."

On Malick Thiaw:

"I thought we saw his qualities as an outstanding player. He's got a little bit of everything physically and technically, and he wants to defend.

"Very promising debut from him. I withdrew him because he was getting fatigued at the end."

Referee: Robert Jones - first appointment of the season involving Newcastle for the Merseyside whistler, last seen taking charge of our 3-0 win at Leicester City in April.

VAR: Matthew Donohue

Stats:

Following goalless encounters at Aston Villa and Leeds United, this stalemate means that Newcastle have drawn three successive away league games 0-0 for the first time in the Premier League.

One has to go back to the 1969/70 First Division season for the most recent occasion before this current campaign.

The Magpies are now winless in all seven Premier League meetings with the Cherries on Tyneside and in Dorset since Eddie Howe left his post as Bournemouth boss back in 2020.

Howe has led United to victory over his former club once - a 1-0 success at SJP in the Carabao Cup during 2022.

U19s narrow defeat

Newcastle U19s  2  Barcelona U19s  3

Newcastle's U19 side began their UEFA U19 Youth League fixtures on Thursday afternoon with the toughest possible test - that of facing defending champions Barcelona.

And after conceding three times in the first half, the youngsters fought back with two goals of their own and came close to levelling in added time.

The visitors took the lead in the 24th minute when a low centre from the left side of the box by Oscar Gistau was knocked in by Xavi Espart.

Magpies 'keeper George Mair made a good parry to deny Gistau in the 36th minute but Barca extended their lead a minute before the break when Gistau was left unattended and scooped a first time shot home.

That soon became 0-3 in the third minute of first half added time as Gistau got his second when he sent a poor clearance back over the head of Mair from 30 yards out.

The young Magpies got one back six minutes into the second period when they were awarded a free-kick just outside the box and it was played short to Leo Shahar who finished well.

United pulled another goal back in the 81st minute when substitute Kacey Wooster burst into the box and netted with a low effort.

The comeback was almost complete in the fourth and final minute of added time but Sean Neave headed wide.

Team: Mair, Bailey, Charlton, Fitzgerald (Waddani 69), Munda (Seung-soo 69), Brayson (Alabi 52), Shahar, Neave, Watts (Epia 59), Johnson, Finneran (Wooster 69).

Update:
CL round-up

Here's how our Champions League opponents fared in the first week of the competition:

Union SG hit the ground running on Tuesday, securing a 3-1 victory at PSV Eindhoven in their very first Champions League fixture. The Belgians were captained by former Hartlepool United defender Christian Burgess.

A 3-2 away win for Qarabag against Benfica on Tuesday prompted the Lisbon side to dismiss coach Bruno Lage - paving the way for Jose Mourinho's return to the real Stadium of Light - and a trip to Tyneside next month.

Athletic Bilbao meanwhile began their League Stage participation with a 0-2 home defeat to Arsenal, while Marseille lost by the odd goal in three at Real Madrid.

Reigning champions PSG defeated Atalanta 4-0 on Wednesday, with Bayer Leverkusen sharing four goals on Thursday with Copenhagen. The Bundesliga side replaced coach Erik ten Hag with Kasper Hjulmand in recent days.

Moving on to the U19 competition that mirrors the senior fixtures, of the sides that Newcastle will face after Barcelona, Benfica won 7-1, Bilbao won 3-1, Union lost 2-6 and Marseille lost 2-3. Leverkusen play on Thursday.

PS: Ex-Magpie Lloyd Kelly was an unlikely goalscoring hero for Juventus on Tuesday, heading home in second half added time to secure a 4-4 draw with Borussia Dortmund.

The defender had also netted in last Saturday's 4-3 victory over Inter Milan in Serie A, his first goals for the club.

2025/26:

The new system is 24/24/48: 24 hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to purchase.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact those applicants directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

2025/26 CL away tickets will be €50 or less.

On This Day in History
21st September

Born Or Died:

1884 William Hibbert born, Golborne, Lancashire. (1911-20)

Striker who arrived at United from Bury at a record cost of £1,950 in October 1911 - having netted for the Shakers in a 5-1 win at SJP some months earlier.

Making his debut in a 4-2 home win over Blackburn Rovers, Billy failed to find the net but scored the following week at Sheffield United before striking in the next home game, against former side Bury.

Capped once by England in 1910 (against Scotland), Billy toured South Africa with an FA party during the same year.

His Magpies career spanned WW1 and coincided with a downturn in the club's fortunes after league and cup conquests during the previous decade.

Later moves took him to Bradford City and Oldham, while Billy was a pioneer for the later trend of moving to play in the USA, spending time at the Fall River Marksmen and J & P Coats (both at Rhode Island).

A brief spell at Levante in Spain was followed by a return to the USA as a coach and later Wigan Borough and Burscough in England.

Also coaching in Hungary before the outbreak of WW2, Hibbert's death was recorded in March 1949.

1930 Robert Stokoe born, Mickley.
(1947-61)

Bob Stokoe may be associated with the greatest mackem success of modern times and is commemorated with a statue on wearside, but as a player he was a good servant to the Magpies.

Making his competitive Newcastle debut in defence at the Boro on Christmas Day 1950 (scoring but finishing on the losing side), Bob wasn't selected for either the 1951 or 1952 FA Cup Final victories.

However he replaced Frank Brennan for the 1955 Wembley success and remained a regular first teamer at Gallowgate until 1961, when he moved to Bury as player-manager.

Later managerial roles followed at Charlton, Carlisle, Blackpool, the mackems, Rochdale with returns to Gigg Lane and Brunton Park.

Bob passed away in February 2004 and just over two years later, a statue in his honour was unveiled outside the stadium of plight by his daughter.

1999 Alexander Isak born, Stockholm, Sweden. (2022-25)

Dwarfing the £40m fee paid for Joelinton by £20m, Newcastle broke their transfer record in late August 2022 when acquiring this striker from Real Sociedad.

Standing 6'4 tall, 22 year-old Isak had been linked with various clubs including Arsenal, but confirmation of an injury to Callum Wilson saw United make a decisive bid to land the Swedish international.

Isak's family left the East African country of Eritrea during a period of civil war in the 1990s and he was born in Stockholm, linking up with AIK from the age of six.

Scoring on his senior league debut at the age of 16 in 2016, a deal taking him to Borussia Dortmund came the following January.

On the fringes of the first team, Alexander agreed a loan move to Dutch side Willem II, where he netted 16 goals in 13 games in the 2018/19 Eredivisie season.

His return to Dortmund was short-lived however; concluding a transfer to La Liga outfit Real Sociedad during June 2019.

Isak struck 33 times in 105 games before Newcastle came calling, taking just 38 minutes of his debut at Liverpool to net.

His first home goal came from the spot against Bournemouth in his second game at Gallowgate and he ended the season with ten goals from 27 games (18 starts) in all competitions, despite missing 13 matches due to a thigh problem.

Alexander's 2023/24 campaign was also affected to a lesser extent by injury, but 25 strikes from 40 games (36 starts) made him United's top scorer in a Premier League season since Alan Shearer's tally of 28 during 2003/04.

And with Callum Wilson spending more time on podcasts than pitches, Isak turned 25 averaging a goal every other game.

Having scored what proved to be the winner in the Carabao Cup final the Isak story then turned decidedly sour.

The catalogue of incidents over the Summer of 2025 still remains extremely raw but his transfer to Liverpool for around £130m was handled incredibly badly by the player, his agent and both clubs with the media also playing a particularly grubby role in proceedings.

Internationally, appearances for Sweden at U16 through to U21 level were followed by a senior bow against Romania in 2019.

Following a 1-5 loss away to Liverpool the previous week, Newcastle returned to winning ways against the other Magpies.

Having scored on his debut at Gallowgate a fortnight earlier, 18 year-old Andy Aitken struck what was to be the only competitive hat-trick in a Magpies career spanning over a decade and almost 350 games.

Defeat at the Den left United languishing 22nd in the second tier - the lowest-ever league position in the club's history.

There was a forgettable debut for loan striker Andy Walker, who was obviously unfit when signed from Celtic.

Ossie Ardiles included him in our starting XI anyway and he was inevitably substituted, although the Manager pointed the blame at his goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek for another failure to deal with a dead ball situation - resulting in Paul Kerr's late winner.

Carlton Palmer failed to heed that warning though and saw red after 35th and 39th minute cautions - the latter for a challenge on Alan Shearer, who got up and moaned at the whistler before Palmer was dismissed.

Recently-installed Leeds boss George Graham was predictably unimpressed and even less chuffed when Beardsley and Robert Lee set up Shearer for the only goal of the game.

2006 Following our defeat at Anfield the previous evening, Newcastle coach Terry McDermott revealed details of his face-off with Craig Bellamy:

"I was talking to the referee at the edge of the tunnel when Bellamy appeared on the scene and suddenly started calling me names.

"I thought he was just joking and I put my arm around him, but he kept on calling me names and that's when it all kicked off.

"I had my say and when he got to the top of the stairs he started shouting at me again, but of course he had security guys around him.

"I was talking to the referee. It had nothing to do with anyone else and I take exception to little upstarts like him.

"I do not like it when people like to think they are bigger than clubs.

"When he was at Newcastle he thought he was a big cheese. When he went to Blackburn he caused trouble there and everywhere he has been he has been in bother and it is all starting again at Liverpool.

"There was no need for it at all and he was 100 per cent out of order."

2008 Confirmation was received that Newcastle striker Andy Carroll had been cautioned, but it was slightly more serious than the onfield yellow card variety.

A Northumbria police spokesperson said:

"On Sunday 14 September police were called to the Pudding Chare to a report that a woman had been assaulted. Officers attended and a 19-year-old man was arrested and later accepted a police caution for assault."

2009 The reserves made it three games unbeaten on their return to the Central League, but only with a hefty slice of luck.

Trailing 0-1 to Lincoln City at Whitley Park with seconds left, Imps defender Danny Hone headed Frank Danquah's centre past his own 'keeper Paul Musselwhite.
