PL2:
Lee glee

Newcastle U21s  2  Norwich City U21s  3

United's winless start to the PL2 season lengthened to four games on Monday evening, as they lost by the odd goal in five to the Canaries at Whitley Park.

U21 coach Adam Lawrence took charge of his first league game since arriving on Tyneside, but it was his opposite number Olly Lee - son of St. James' Park hero Rob - who was almost instantly celebrating the opening goal.

That came after just 15 seconds when Dylan Jones won his one on one with goalkeeper James Taylor and slotted in.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 27th minute after a corner from the left was steered home by Toby Chilvers from close range.

United got one back a minute before half-time when Alfie Harrison centred from the left side of the area and the ball was diverted past Rylee Mitchell by Rory Finneran.

Winger Kyle Fitzgerald almost equalised for the Magpies eight minutes after the interval when he smacked a first time effort off the post.

City restored their two goal lead in the 66th minute when Kenneth Adoh broke upfield and held off several illegal challenges before setting up Jones to finish coolly.

Newcastle pushed forward with more conviction in the closing stages and Leo Shahar shot weakly against Mitchell before fellow substitute Fraser Harper found the top corner of the goal in the second minute of time added on after a corner was only half-cleared.

However, the black and whites were unable to find an equaliser in the remaining three minutes and slipped to a third successive home defeat.

Team: Taylor, Ashby (Shahar 60), Charlton, Heffernan, Pivas, Bailey, Harrison, Finneran (Harper 78), Neave, Munda, Fitzgerald (Brayson 71).
Sub n/u: Anderson, Thompson.

Booked: Bailey.

The absence of Alex Murphy may indicate an involvement against Bradford City on Wednesday, with a 60 minute outing for Harrison Ashby making him another possible - although he's yet to kick a ball competitively for us.

NCFC: Mitchell, Okwumo, Ozcan, Adelusi, Gee, Bridge, Mundle-Smith (Baumann 83), Towler (Djedje 76), Jones (Domeracki 89), Adoh, Chilvers (Welch 76).
Subs n/u: Lines.

Booked: Okwumo, Mundle-Smith, Gee.

Crowd: 232.

PS: This was the first of two PL2 outings for the U21s this week; Friday seeing them face Reading at what is currently called the Select Car Leasing Stadium (formerly The Madejski Stadium).

That's a 7pm kick-off and tickets are now on sale from RFC via their online ticket office priced at £6 for adults. Lower sections G7 and G8 in the West Stand are available now.

Bournemouth  0  Newcastle  0

Newcastle returned to Premier League action at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday afternoon and the scoreless away run continued; now three in a row after the stalemates at Aston Villa and Leeds United.

Eddie Howe made seven changes to the side that faced Barcelona on Thursday with Lewis Hall, Malick Thiaw, Lewis Miley and Joe Willock making their first Premier League starts of the season.

That saw Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Harvey Barnes all on the bench, as was Anthony Elanga who had started against Barcelona.

Nick Pope used his feet to save from Alejandro Jimenez early on and Jacob Murphy had a near post effort smothered by Djordje Petrovic.

Then David Brooks had a goal disallowed after the linesman flagged which was eventually confirmed by VAR which also confirmed that Sandro Tonali wasn't guilty of a handball from a corner flicked on by Sven Botman.

The Italian fired an effort that flew over the bar at the other end but as the half wore on there were less and less threats on goal.

After the break, the main talking point for United was when Nick Woltemade clearly had his shirt pulled by Bafode Diakite in the box but after referee Rob Jones didn't give the decision, VAR didn't overturn it.

Thiaw was booked for a deliberate handball and minutes later was lucky not to get a second yellow when he upended Ryan Christie and thankfully the home side made a mess of the free-kick.

The Cherries had another chance from a set-piece on the edge of the box but substitute Justin Kluivert's low shot was saved by Pope as the game petered out to its scoreless conclusion.

That left the Magpies in 13th position which was where they remained after the final game of the weekend.

Team:
Pope, Livramento, Thiaw (Lascelles 84), Botman, Burn, Hall, L.Miley, Tonali, J.Murphy (Elanga 62), Willock (Barnes 62)
, Woltemade (Osula 84).
Subs n/u: Ramsdale, Trippier, Krafth, Joelinton, Guimaraes.

Booked: Thiaw.

AFCB: Petrovic, Jimenez (Hill 46), Diakite, Senesi, Truffert, Adams, Scott (Christie 63), Semenyo, Tavernier (Adli 75) , Brooks (Kluivert 63), Evanilson.
Subs n/u: Dennis, Doak, Kroupi, Milosavljevic, Soler.

Booked: Jimenez, Diakite
.

Crowd: 11,212 including a sold out away section.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

"We showed the strength of our squad today because I did think it was a good performance without being a match-winning one.

"We used a lot of different players, so that's a really positive sign.

"I think there were some really good things within our performance.

"Defensively, we were really good. You want to see the team defending our box well, hard to play against, strong, robust, and I think we were all those things.

"Obviously, the concern for us is that we weren't free-flowing in creating the amount of chances we would want, but it's a very difficult place to come. I think a point here is a good result.

"If you look at the games we've played, it's not by luck that we've kept these clean sheets.

"Yes, Nick (Pope) made a couple of good saves, but it was the performance of the team that was cohesive and minimised space for them.

"We weren't as aggressive, but it was a mixture of Wednesday and getting the best out of our players.

"We pride ourselves on scoring goals and being an attacking team, but we're evolving as a team.

"We're not going to be the same team as last year. We need to find different ways to score and attack, but we have the players to do it.

"We know Bournemouth are a really good team. We limited them to long shots and Nick made some good saves.  We didn't get our attacking game going.

"It's not good. You want to create chances and clear-cut chances. I didn't feel that in our performance."

On Malick Thiaw:

"I thought we saw his qualities as an outstanding player. He's got a little bit of everything physically and technically, and he wants to defend.

"Very promising debut from him. I withdrew him because he was getting fatigued at the end."

On Nick Woltemade:

"
Just naturally we will be a different team attacking wise without Alex. We will be attacking with a different emphasis.

"Nick
(Woltemade) was very effective here with his footwork & link play. He sees some lovely passes. We just need to know & get used to him & his style more.

"We need to get more runners off him, because he’s very good in that respect.  I’m hopeful we’re evolving to a different team, hopefully a better team. That is the plan, but it may take a bit of time.

"All centre forwards to a degree are reliant on their service. Alex wouldn’t have scored a goal for us if we didn’t get up the pitch & get the ball into dangerous areas. We have to do that better as a team.

"But of course Nick’s a goal-getter - his record last year was very strong. It wasn’t a criticism of him today, more the team. We got into some good areas and areas we should have done better from.”

On the Woltemade penalty claim:

"My gut instinct was a penalty. I was adamant it was. He was tugged and pulled & it stopped him getting a shot off."

Referee:
Robert Jones - first appointment of the season involving Newcastle for the Merseyside whistler, last seen taking charge of our 3-0 win at Leicester City in April.

Lewis Miley made his 50th senior competitive appearance in all competitions for the Magpies (24 starts).

Following goalless encounters at Aston Villa and Leeds United, Newcastle have now drawn three successive away league games 0-0 for the first time in the Premier League.

One has to go back to the 1969/70 First Division season for the most recent occasion before this current campaign.

The Magpies are now winless in all seven Premier League meetings with the Cherries on Tyneside and in Dorset since Eddie Howe left his post as Bournemouth boss back in 2020.

Howe has led United to victory over his former club once - a 1-0 success at SJP in the Carabao Cup during 2022.

Carabao Cup

Bradford City (h)

Newcastle begin the defence of their Carabao Cup title with a Third Round tie against League One Bradford City at Gallowgate on Wednesday.

It's a 7.45pm kick-off and if the scores are level after 90 minutes, the tie will be settled by a penalty shootout.

City have sold their full allocation of 4,900 tickets, meaning that there will be post-match restrictions on home fans crossing the car park between the Milburn/Leazes Stands to reach Barrack Road.

Anyone who uses that route will need to wait until the City fans have exited or walk down to Strawberry Place and access Barrack Road that way.

Winners progress to the Fourth Round, which takes place during the week commencing Monday October 27th.

The Fourth Round draw is at 10pm on Wednesday.

Team: Anthony Gordon is available after suspension but Jacob Ramsey, Yoane Wissa and Fabian Schar miss out.

UEFAYL:
U19s narrow defeat

Newcastle U19s  2  Barcelona U19s  3

Newcastle's U19 side began their UEFA U19 Youth League fixtures on Thursday afternoon with the toughest possible test - that of facing defending champions Barcelona.

And after conceding three times in the first half, the youngsters fought back with two goals of their own and came close to levelling in added time.

The visitors took the lead in the 24th minute when a low centre from the left side of the box by Oscar Gistau was knocked in by Xavi Espart.

Magpies 'keeper George Mair made a good parry to deny Gistau in the 36th minute but Barca extended their lead a minute before the break when Gistau was left unattended and scooped a first time shot home.

That soon became 0-3 in the third minute of first half added time as Gistau got his second when he sent a poor clearance back over the head of Mair from 30 yards out.

The young Magpies got one back six minutes into the second period when they were awarded a free-kick just outside the box and it was played short to Leo Shahar who finished well.

United pulled another goal back in the 81st minute when substitute Kacey Wooster burst into the box and netted with a low effort.

The comeback was almost complete in the fourth and final minute of added time but Sean Neave headed wide.

Team: Mair, Bailey, Charlton, Fitzgerald (Waddani 69), Munda (Seung-soo 69), Brayson (Alabi 52), Shahar, Neave, Watts (Epia 59), Johnson, Finneran (Wooster 69).

The new system is 24/24/48: 24 hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to purchase.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact those applicants directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

On This Day in History
22nd September

Born Or Died:

1878 Peter McWilliam born, Inveravon, Scotland. (1902-11)

Left half acquired from Inverness Thistle, who debuted in a 0-1 loss at Middlesbrough during October 1902.

Appearing for United during their Edwardian run of success, Peter won Division One titles in 1905, 1907 & 1909 - honours that saw him gain the nickname of "Peter the Great" at SJP.

FA Cup Final appearances in 1905, 1906, 1908 and 1910 for United also followed - finally earning a winners medal at the fourth attempt, against Barnsley.

Peter received his first Scotland cap in 1905, captaining his country on the occasion of his eighth and final appearance six years later.

A knee ligament injury sustained while with Scotland curtailed his playing career in 1911 - his final game as a Magpie a 0-3 defeat at Liverpool that February.

That meant Newcastle were deprived of his services in the 1911 FA Cup Final - having played in four ties that season and scored once (that goal against Bury in January 1911 the 12th and last of his Magpies career).

Appointed manager of Tottenham Hotspur in 1912, Peter remained in post for the next fifteen years - leading them to FA Cup Final success over Wolves in 1921.

Taking over at Middlesbrough for a five year stint, Peter left there in 1934 and had a spell as Chief Scout of Arsenal - having turned down the chance to succeed legendary boss Herbert Chapman when he passed away.

Returning for a second stint in charge of Spurs in 1938, he remained in charge until 1942 when his wife's worsening medical condition caused him to resign.

Living in Redcar (birthplace of his wife), he passed away in 1951.

1933 Dave Smith born, Dundee, Scotland.
(1968-71)

As a player, Dave appeared for Burnley, Brighton and Bristol City before opting to pursue a career in coaching.

His first appointment took him to Libya, before a rather less exotic stint at Sheffield Wednesday led to Smith's arrival at SJP in June 1967, assisting manager Joe Harvey.

Dave coached United during their victorious Fairs Cup run of 1969/69 and is pictured above with the trophy.

Leaving SJP to become reserve team boss at Arsenal, he sampled management for the first time in 1974 with Mansfield Town and led the Stags to successive promotions.

Later postings at Southend United and Plymouth also saw him secure promotions before he was persuaded to take over at his hometown club Dundee in 1988.

That didn't work out though and within a year Dave had returned to England as boss of Torquay United for a three year spell.

He then established youth football training schools in the Plymouth area and in a nod to what he acknowledges to be the highlight of his career, called the honours he hands out to top students, "Magpie Awards."

He died just before his 89th birthday in September 2022.

1936 Robert Whitehead born, Ashington.
(1954-62)

Right back Bob joined Newcastle from Fatfield in December 1954 and soon agreed professional terms.

His first taste of senior action came at St. James' Park in October 1956 when selected for United against a British Olympic XI and he gained experience in several other friendlies that season.

However Bob had to wait for a competitive debut until September 1957, deputising at right back for Dick Keith in a 2-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor.

Returning to the reserve side, he was next called upon just over a year later and made a total of seven appearances during the 1958/59 campaign.

The 1959/60 season saw Bob play ten games from September to December, including an 8-2 home defeat of Everton and concluding with a 2-2 draw away to Chelsea on Boxing Day.

A back injury sustained at Stamford Bridge that day resulted in Whitehead surrendering the number 2 shirt to Keith, having made a total of 20 starts for Newcastle, all in the First Division.

Loaned to Cambridge City for the 1961/62 season, Bob made a permanent departure from Gallowgate during August 1962, joining Darlington for £600 amid interest from Rotherham United and York City.

Retiring due to injury two years after, Bob later lived in Stakeford and worked for an electrical company based in Bedlington.

His death was reported during March 2019 at the age of 82.

1952 Ray Xuereb born, Marsa, Malta.
(1977)

Striker who debuted as a 16 year old for Floriana and enjoyed a successful 13 year spell with the Maltese club.

Ray came to the attention of United in 1977 after leading his side to the championship, finishing top scorer in the league and winning the accolade of Maltese footballer of the year.

Xuereb netted during a 1-1 draw against the Magpies in a post-season friendly game in Malta and then agreed to a trial in England the following season.

Appearing for Newcastle's reserve side, Xuereb returned to Malta without agreeing any deal, apparently having failed to settle in England (a previous trial at QPR is claimed to have ended for the same reason).

Playing on for Floriana until 1982, Ray later appeared for Hamrun Spartans, Naxxar Lions, Gharghur and Naxxar again.

Serving a one year ban for signing up to an abortive breakaway league, he remained there for one further year before ending his career at Qrendi in the 1995/96 season.

Beginning a coaching career in 1987, Ray later guided Maltese youngsters at both academy and national team level in addition to spells as first team boss of Sirens FC.

Internationally, he won the first of his 44 senior caps for Malta against Sweden in a World Cup qualifier during 1972.

1957 Steve Carney born, Wallsend.
(1979-85)

Defender who began his career at Dudley Juniors, having trials for West Bromwich Albion before joining North Shields in 1975.

Moving on to Blyth Spartans two years later, Steve featured in
their memorable FA Cup run in the 1977/78 season, scoring a vital goal at Stoke City in Fourth Round.

Sent off at Wrexham in the next round, Carney was available for the replay and played in the defeat on a memorable night at a sold-out St. James' Park.

Steve later followed fellow Spartan Alan Shoulder to United, signing for £1,000 in October 1979 and debuting in a 2-0 home win over Fulham two months later.

His uncompromising tackling became a feature of his regular first team displays at both full back and central defence, with occasional forays into midfield.

Part of the 1983/84 promotion-winning side, Carney marked Newcastle's return to the top flight with his only senior goal for the club in an opening day win at Leicester City.

However he soon lost his place in the side and was loaned to Carlisle United before joining Darlington in July 1985, following his release by the Magpies.

Following spells at Rochdale and Hartlepool United Steve returned to Croft Park in 1987 via Tow Law Town, serving Spartans well for a further four years.

Involved with the family babywear clothing business, Carney turned down the chance to manage Blyth, but later assisted brother Rob at Newcastle Blue Star.

Entering the property trade, Steve returned to SJP in 2003 as he and Blyth's 1978 heroes were presented to the crowd.

Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he died in May 2013 at the tragically early age of 55.

There was a goal on his debut for centre forward Jack Smith, whose goalscoring record of 73 goals in 112 senior appearances is often overshadowed by memories of the Gallacher and Milburn eras.

1934 While Jack Smith was beginning his league career for United, former Gallowgate favourite Hughie Gallacher was appearing at Roker Park for his latest club Derby County.

In a stormy encounter watched by 30,000, Derby triumphed 4-1 thanks to a Jack Bowers treble. Gallacher was dismissed shortly after half time.

Having got off the mark for the season with a brace at Sheffield Wednesday in midweek, Mark McGhee netted again.

However a moment of madness from Magpies goalkeeper John Burridge allowed Trevor Morley to level.

Newcastle boss Jim Smith admitted that he was keeping tabs on Boni Ginzburg at Rangers, but in the event he opted to bring Banik Ostrava 'keeper Pavel Srnicek in on trial.

1992 Midfielder Robert Lee signed for £700,000 from Charlton Athletic, after rejecting overtures from his former boss Lennie Lawrence at Middlesbrough.

Keegan famously convinced Lee that Newcastle was nearer his Essex home than Teesside - at least in transport terms....

The Pies took an early lead when Pavel Srnicek fumbled Mark Draper's indirect free kick into his own net.

That inspired United in general though and Andy Cole in particular, who grabbed a hat-trick against his home town team.

1997 The reserves won 1-0 at Wigan, thanks to a late winner from David Eatock, signed from non-league side Chorley.

Featuring for United at Springield Park were on-trial duo Massimo Oddo from AC Milan and Carlos Gonzales from Sydney United.

The Italian defender wasn't retained - but went on to win 34 caps for his country and a 2006 World Cup winners medal - while the Aussie forward soon retreated back down under in a huff.

2003 Michael Chopra got the vital goal that beat Manchester City's Reserves 1-0 at Hyde United's Ewen Fields, striking two minutes into the second half, in front of watching City boss Kevin Keegan.

2006 Celestine Babayaro accepted a charge of violent conduct from the FA over an incident with Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt at Anfield two days previously.

Referee Mark Halsey missed the incident, but video evidence subsequently showed the Nigerian striking the Dutchman in the face while the pair jostled in advance of a first half corner.

Babayaro was banned for three games, but the chances of him making that many appearances in succession without developing an 'injury' were pretty slim anyway....

2008 Newcastle Reserves lost 0-3 to Sheffield United at Whitley Park.

Tormentor-in-chief for the Blades was ex-Magpie Keith Gillespie, who scored twice to eclipse a young Toon side that included reserve debutant Brad Inman.

Chris Hughton opted to field a weakened side at London Road, making ten changes and handing debuts to defensive duo Ben Tozer and James Tavernier.

With Haris Vuckic and Ryan Donaldson also making first senior starts, the Magpies struggled and were deservedly 0-2 down at half time.

Inexplicab
ly, Hughton left on Danny Guthrie - who had already been booked - and then made a triple switch on the hour, introducing Kevin Nolan, Geremi and Alan Smith.

Guthrie was then inevitably sent off, joining the unfit Joey Barton on the sidelines.

Reacting to the news on twitter, ex-Mag, Joey Barton said:

2014 Remie Streete's headed brace secured a 2-1 win for the U21s over Arsenal as they leapfrogged the Gunners into pole position.

Streete's display at Boreham Wood's Meadow Park was seen by Port Vale officials and he soon joined them on loan.
