Pitch prediction
Our latest giveaway with Pitch
Publishing comes from Magpies club historian Paul Joannou, who has
penned the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons,
winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines
worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.
Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in
managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to
Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.
Published on Monday, "Bill McCracken..." is available to
order now direct from the publisher via their Amazon shop

with an exclusive 25% discount.
To be in with a chance of winning a copy, we simply require you to
predict the full time score in Newcastle's Premier League game against
Arsenal this coming Sunday.

Carabao Cup:
Bradford City (h)
Newcastle begin the defence of their Carabao Cup title with a Third Round
tie against League One Bradford City at Gallowgate on
Wednesday.
It's a 7.45pm kick-off and if the scores are level after 90 minutes, the
tie will be settled by a penalty shootout.
City have sold their full allocation of 4,900 tickets, meaning that
there will be post-match restrictions on home fans crossing the car
park between the Milburn/Leazes Stands to reach Barrack Road.
Anyone who uses that route will need to wait until the City fans
have exited or walk down to Strawberry Place and access Barrack Road
that way.
Winners progress to the Fourth Round, which takes place during the
week commencing Monday October 27th.
The Fourth Round draw is at 10pm on Wednesday.
Hat sellers Football Bobbles will have a stall
outside the Trent House pub from 5.30pm. Card payments accepted.
Team: Anthony Gordon is available after
suspension but Jacob Ramsey, Yoane Wissa and Fabian Schar miss out.
Coral rate this tie as
follows (after 90 minutes):

The draw 9/1
BCFC win 16/1

BCFC: Will Swan has scored six times in all competitions so far
this season, while fellow striker Bobby Pointon has five
League One strikes to his name.
Toon fan and Bishop Auckland native Andy Cook hopes to feature at
SJP on Wednesday, although the 34 year-old striker has only made one
fleeting substitute appearance this season in League One so far.
Graham Alexander's side reached the Third Round thanks to a pair of away
victories over Championship sides: 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers and 3-0 at side Stoke City.
Ahead of their first visit to Tyneside in almost quarter of a
century, the Bantams won 3-1 at Cardiff City on Saturday to replace
the Bluebirds at the top of League One.
Alexander was on Burnley's books as a player when Eddie Howe took
charge at Turf Moor in January 2011, but was released at the end of
that season and joined Preston.

Rolando returns
Former Newcastle winger Rolando Aarons is back in football, after
agreeing a contract with National League Morecambe.
The 29 year-old has been a free agent since leaving Slovenian side NK Celje
at the turn of the year and spent pre-season at a PFA training camp.
Aarons becomes the third SJP old boy to join the Shrimpers as they seek to
rebuild following a traumatic start to the season and subsequent takeover.
Already at the Mazuma Stadium are central defender Ludwig Francillette
and midfielder Mo Sangare.

UEFAYL:
U19s narrow defeat
Newcastle U19s 2 Barcelona U19s 3
Newcastle's U19 side began their UEFA U19 Youth League fixtures on Thursday
afternoon with
the toughest possible test - that of facing defending champions Barcelona.
And after conceding three times in the first half, the youngsters fought
back with two goals of their own and came close to levelling in added time.
The visitors took the lead in the 24th minute when a low centre from the
left side of the box by Oscar Gistau was knocked in by Xavi Espart.
Magpies 'keeper George Mair made a good parry to deny Gistau in the 36th
minute but Barca extended their lead a minute before the break when Gistau
was left unattended and scooped a first time shot home.
That soon became 0-3 in the third minute of first half added time as Gistau
got his second when he sent a poor clearance back over the head of Mair from
30 yards out.
The young Magpies got one back six minutes into the second period when they
were awarded a free-kick just outside the box and it was played short to
Leo Shahar who finished well.
United pulled another goal back in the 81st minute when substitute Kacey
Wooster burst into the box and netted with a low effort.
The comeback was almost complete in the fourth and final minute of added time but Sean Neave headed wide.
Team: Mair, Bailey, Charlton, Fitzgerald (Waddani 69), Munda (Seung-soo
69), Brayson (Alabi 52), Shahar,
Neave, Watts (Epia 59), Johnson, Finneran (Wooster 69).
Subs n/u: Dowell, Yildiz, Goodbrand, Bloomer.
Booked: Bailey, Neave, Charlton.
FCB: Aller, Victor, Olmedo (Campos 65), Cuenca (Kourouma 65),
Bernabeu, Espart (Goren 65), Nomoko (Pallas Prats 46), Villar, Gistau (Gilabert
74), Rodriguez, Kluivert.
Subs n/u: Bonfill, Oertli, Avila, Tunkara.
Booked: Espart, Cuenca, Rodriguez.
Crowd: 657.
Appearing for the visitors was Shane Kluivert, son of former Magpie and
Barca striker Patrick, who was at the game.

The new system is 24/24/48: 24
hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
purchase.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log
on and complete your purchase regardless.
Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered
to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total.
NUFC contact those applicants directly.
Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are
gone.
2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.
2025/26 CL away tickets

Born Or Died:
1903 Thomas Leach born, Wincobank, Sheffield. (1934-36)
An England international defender while at Sheffield Wednesday,
Thomas (generally known as Tony) moved to Hillsborough from Wath Athletic in
1926.
Made captain at Newcastle, Leach guided his side to sixth and eighth placed
finishes in the Second Division before moving on to play for Stockport,
Carlisle and Lincoln.
Leach is remembered for his part in an illegal payment scandal that involved
Stockport County - who were chasing promotion from the Third Division North.
Their main rivals were Lincoln City - with two of Carlisle's remaining four
games in the 1936/37 season being against The Imps.
Via Leach, Stockport offered to pay all the Carlisle players a bonus if the
Cumbrians overcame the Imps in both those games.
Word got out and at an FA commission the following year Leach was found guilty,
suspended and fined.
Carlisle won only one of those two games while neither Lincoln nor Stockport
were promoted. In a strange twist, by the time the commission met, Leach was a
Lincoln player, so served his ban while on their books. Tony passed away in
1970.
1936 George Eastham born, Blackpool.
(1956-60)
Midfielder signed from Northern Irish club Ards (where his
father George Senior was manager), who initially played for Newcastle's reserve
side.
Selected for a floodlit friendly at SJP against Hearts that October, Eastham's
senior competitive debut came soon after in a 2-2 home draw with Luton Town.
While a popular player at SJP, George's spell as a Magpie is remembered for a
contractual dispute that was ultimately to lead to ground-breaking changes in
the transfer system.
His transfer request in December 1959 was refused, United retaining his registration
until the following summer when his contract
expired, his final game a 0-1 home loss to Manchester
City in April 1960.
Refusing to sign on the terms offered meant that George was unable to play and
was forced to work as a cork tile salesman to receive a wage (in the
Guildford area, far away from the North East).
A £47,500 transfer was ultimately concluded to Arsenal, but Eastham (backed by
the PFA) maintained his stance against the "retain and transfer"
system and mounted a successful challenge in the High Court.
Enduring crowd abuse upon his return to SJP with the Gunners, George's time at
Highbury proved also to be somewhat problematic, with a dispute over wages 1961
and a change in playing style seeing him transfer -listed the following year.
He remained at Highbury until 1966 though, first winning international
recognition against Brazil at Wembley in May 1963 - the first of 18 full
caps, previously appearing at both U23 and FA Representative level.
The 1966/67 season saw George move to Stoke City and he was to win a Football
League Cup medal in 1972, scoring the winner against Chelsea at the age of 35.
Awarded the OBE in 1973, George retired from playing the following year and was
appointed as Tony Waddington's assistant at Stoke - succeeding him in 1977 but
only lasting ten months before leaving.
He later settled in South Africa - having spent time there in 1971 on a
sabbatical from the Potters, playing for Cape Town City and managing the
Hellenic club.
Living in Cape Town, George ran a travel agency and also continued to be
involved in football, both coaching and scouting.
2008 saw him back in England as his medals, shirts and caps were auctioned off
to benefit his family, before he received a further belated gong the following
year.
That came about after a change of heart from FIFA, who decided to backdate the
award of medals to members of the winning squads between 1930 and 1974.
That meant that George and a dozen other players and staff members from Sir Alf
Ramsay's England 1966 World Cup squad received medals.
Eastham visited 10 Downing Street for a belated presentation of his medal by
then-PM, Gordon Brown.
March 2022 then saw him back in the UK for a Stoke City ex-player reunion -
only to fall ill and require emergency heart surgery in London.
George died in December 2024, aged 88.
1989 Darren Lough born, Longhorsley
(2006-10)
Defender who recovered from a broken leg suffered during an FA
Youth Cup tie at SJP against Millwall in February 2007.
Appearing for the senior side from the bench during a friendly at Hartlepool in
July 2007, Darren then started the next game at Hull City, when then-boss Sam
Allardyce fielded a virtual reserve XI that lost 0-1.
A return to first team friendly action came in 2009, when Darren appeared for
the final 10 minutes of the 1-6 humiliation at Orient.
Released by the club in 2010, he had trials at Inverness
Caledonian Thistle, Gillingham, Leyton Orient and Gateshead before joining
hometown club Ashington.
Recovering from a fractured skull sustained playing for the Colliers, Lough
signed for Icelanders KA Akureyri in 2012, moving on to rivals IA Akranes two
years later.
2017 saw him back in the UK, signing for South Shields and later moving on to
Hebburn Town and Ashington.
1989 Wesley Ngo Baheng born Blanc Mesnil, France.
(2007-10)
Originally on trial at Bolton Wanderers, this striker followed
Trotters boss Sam Allardyce to SJP in the summer of 2007.
However, no deal was concluded with former club Le Havre until the January 2008
transfer window, Wesley making a reserve debut against the mackems soon after.
However knee and thigh injuries sustained at Gallowgate during the
Northumberland Senior Cup Final against Blyth Spartans that April sidelined
Baheng for almost a full year.
Featuring in United's pre-season game at Shamrock Rovers in July 2009, he was
an unused substitute for a League Cup loss at Peterborough just before his 20th
birthday.
Released in summer 2010, Wesley underwent trials at Mechelen (Belgium), Faro
(Portugal), Nuremburg (Germany), Amiens (France) and Gateshead before joining
Aldershot.
Later appearing for fellow League Two side Hereford United, Wesley subsequently
went back to France, playing for Blanc-Mesnil, FC Dieppe and UJA Maccabi Paris
Métropole.
Retiring at the age of 32, he established a business with fellow former
footballer Mathieu Manset for retraining ex-professionals.
Away from football, he performed as a rap artist, under the moniker of F-ikass.
1994 Yusuf Mersin born, London.
(2013)
Turkish youth international goalkeeper
who began his career with Millwall before making a switch to Liverpool in late
2010.
6 foot 5 inches tall Mersin played at both Academy and reserve level at Anfield,
appearing as a stand-in for United U18s twice in August 2013, while Freddie
Woodman was on international duty for England.
Virtually a spectator on his debut as the mackems were beaten 3-0 at Little
Benton, Yusuf was rather more involved three days later when he played in a 1-2
defeat by Southampton at the same venue.
Released by Liverpool in 2014, Mersin went on to play for Kasimpasa (Turkey),
Crawley Town, Dover Athletic, Maidstone United, Welling United (loan), Harland
& Wolff Welders (Northern Ireland), Mickleover Town and Hyde United.
1999 Thomas Allan born, Ashington.
(2016-22)
Forward who joined United from
Cramlington Juniors in 2012, making his first appearance for the U18s against
Derby County in January 2016 - and netting within 12 minutes.
Winning a two year scholarship ahead of the following season, Thomas was
blooded at reserve team level in a Central League Cup tie away to Rotherham
that December.
Allan then enjoyed a memorable debut at Gallowgate in early 2017, netting twice
in an FA Youth Cup success against Swansea City - the second seeing him run the
length of the pitch before shooting home.
Signing his first professional deal ahead of the 2018/19 season, Tom went on to
score five times in all competitions for the U23s.
A first taste of senior football then came as a substitute against Wolves
during the Asia Trophy in China.
Almost unbelievably though, he managed to get his name on the scoresheet during
that game in Nanjing, inadvertently heading the ball past his own goalkeeper
for an own goal.
Tom's senior debut came from the bench in a home FA Cup win over Rochdale in
January 2020 and he was loaned out to League One side Accrington Stanley the
following season.
Featured in senior pre-season games in 2021, a loan to Scottish side Morton
followed but he was recalled after 11 scoreless games.
Joining National League Gateshead after his release by United in 2022, Allan
was loaned to Spennymoor Town before returning to the International Stadium.
He went out on loan again to South Shields before signing for Darlington in
June 2025.
