Carabao Cup:
Magpies v Cockerels

Newcastle's reward for defeating the Bantams is a Fourth Round Carabao Cup home tie against Tottenham Hotspur.

That will be played at St. James' Park during the week commencing Monday October 27th.

Season ticket holders signed up to the cup scheme will be charged £20 or £25 depending on seat location, with monies taken seven days after the fixture date is confirmed.

Fourth Round draw:

Arsenal v Brighton
Grimsby Town v Brentford
Swansea City v Manchester City
Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur
Wrexham v Cardiff City
Liverpool v Crystal Palace
Wolves v Chelsea
Wycombe Wanderers v Fulham

This is the fourth time that the two sides have been paired in this competition, United winning the 1975/76 semi-final on aggregate - losing 0-1 in North London but recovering to triumph 3-1 on Tyneside in the second leg.

The Magpies lost the next meeting 1-2 at Gallowgate in September 2008, before going down 0-4 at White Hart Lane in the most recent pairing during December 2014.

The draw gives Eddie Howe's side three successive home games in as many competitions: a Champions League tie against Benfica, the visit of Fulham in the Premier League and then concluding with the Spurs League Cup tie.

Thomas Frank's Cockerels by contrast have a trio of away fixtures: Monaco in the Champions League, Everton in the Premier League and then Newcastle at SJP.

Frank has defeated Newcastle in this competition before, guiding Brentford to a 1-0 home success during 2020/21.

Carabao Cup:
Braces beat Bantams

Newcastle  4  Bradford City  1

Newcastle began the defence of their Carabao Cup title on Wednesday with a comfortable Third Round victory against League One Bradford City at Gallowgate.

Joelinton and William Osula both scored a goal in each half, City's sole reply a memorable strike from boyhood Toon fan Andy Cook that flew past debutant Aaron Ramsdale.

That made it 3-1 with 11 minutes to play, only for Osula's second and United's fourth to kill off any faint hopes that the Bantams could take the tie to a penalty shootout.

Eddie Howe fielded a strong side that saw Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton return while giving first starts of the season for Emil Krafth and Ramsdale.

The goalkeeper was called into action in just the second minute and again when he tipped a deflected Bobby Pointon shot wide.

Joelinton fired over the bar at the other end and when Anthony's Gordon shot fell for the Brazilian he supplied a neat finish to put the Magpies ahead in the 17th minute.

Just two minutes later it was 2-0 when Bruno's precise through ball was finished calmly by Osula through the legs of goalkeeper Sam Walker at the Leazes End.

Gordon had a chance on the break before Osula's shot was saved by Walker's feet after being set up by Anthony Elanga.

Gordon had another shot saved from outside of the box and then Bruno fired over the bar two minutes before the break as United continued to make and miss chances.

Joelinton headed wide from close range two minutes into the second period before Gordon had another shot smothered as both sides looked for the next crucial goal.

Stephen Humphreys headed straight at Ramsdale when well placed in the 53rd minute and Bruno's deft flick clipped the top of the goal frame.

Elanga was next to go close but allowed Walker to make another save and Osula should have converted a Gordon cross from close range instead of heading well off target.

Gordon dragged another good chance wide but in the 75th minute the tie was effectively ended after Bruno found Joelinton in the box and he got his second of the night.

Bruno looked a certain scorer after a flowing move but was denied by Walker before Cook seized on a loose ball and fired in off the bar for a memorable moment at his beloved SJP.

Big Joe then had a chance to complete what would have been the first treble in this competition by a Newcastle player since Craig Bellamy back in 2001, but was denied by a defender.

Substitute Harvey Barnes hit a volley wide then curled a shot narrowly past the far post before supplying the cross for Osula to convert from point blank range with three minutes remaining.

Bruno almost grabbed a fifth in added time but it ended 4-1 to the Carabao Cup holders, setting up another home tie against last season's Europa Cup winners.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

"We want to win whatever is put in front of us, and the attitude stems from us, the coaches, and it should filter down.

"There is no difference between the games; these are opportunities to win trophies, and you can't just turn them away.

"So, the hard rounds are the early ones. They are very difficult. Last year, we had to battle through against Wimbledon on the way to winning it; Bradford was the same. The mentality, you can't switch off.

"We wanted to win and wanted to score and try to entertain everybody that came. I thought we did that.

"It was always going to be a difficult game; nobody wants to make anything easy for you.

"Bradford are top of their league and we needed a bit of patience in our performance, but once we got into our groove, we were very good.

"We believe we have a strong squad. We take it on a game-by-game basis. After Barcelona (on Thursday), it was a case of who we felt would be fatigued going into the Bournemouth game (on Sunday).

"We created a lot of opportunities, and people impressed, and that only helps the team win consistently.

"The lads are very aware of the strength in depth, so everyone in their position will be looking over their shoulder going, 'If I don't play well today, there's someone else waiting to take my shirt'."

On William Osula:

"It was a slightly turbulent end to the transfer window for Will. Slowly but surely he is improving his game. It wasn't just his goals tonight, it was his hold-up play, his wing play.

"He's done his chances
(of Premier League pitch time) no harm.

"He's very driven. Will has got great attitude to his work and his career. He's very ambitious, he wants to play as all players do, but he is now justifying that by his training performances and when he plays on the pitch.

"We have done a lot of work with him and will continue to do that for his benefit to try to get him to be the very best player he can be."

Stats:

Joelinton's brace moved him on to six League Cup goals, one behind Alan Gowling and Alan Shearer (and own goals).

Ahead of them lie Shola Ameobi and Andy Cole with eight and Malcolm Macdonald on 12.

The Brazilian hadn't found the net for the Magpies since December 2024, when he struck in a 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Joelinton now has 31 goals in a Newcastle shirt; 22 in the Premier League, six in the Carabao Cup, two in the FA Cup and one in the Champions League.

Will Osula moved on to five goals for the Magpies in all competitions; two in the PL, two in the CC and one in the FAC. All five came at SJP.

The new system is 24/24/48: 24 hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to purchase.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact those applicants directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

On This Day in History
25th September

Born Or Died:

1895 Thomas Henry McDonald born, Inverness, Scotland.(1921-31)

Initially signing for the Caledonian club in his native Inverness, Tom moved to Glasgow Rangers in 1919 before Newcastle brought him to England in February 1921.

Making his debut in a 0-0 draw away at Middlesbrough early the following month, McDonald's first senior goal was in a 3-3 draw at Blackburn Rovers in his third game.

And among his 112 subsequent strikes came a trio of hat tricks plus 17 goals in United's Championship-winning season of 1926/27.

An FA Cup winner with the Magpies against Aston Villa at Wembley in 1924, Tom was never capped by Scotland.

Playing his final game for the Magpies in January 1931, McDonald later served York City, Goole Town and Unsworth Colliery.

His death was recorded in 1969.

1952 Ray Clarke born, Hackney.
(1980-81)

Striker who began his career as a Spurs apprentice, making one senior appearance before joining Swindon Town in 1973.

Following a move to Mansfield Town in 1974, Ray helped the Stags win the Fourth Division title in 1975 - going through the full season without losing a home game.

His next switch was a surprise one however, with a £90K move to Sparta Rotterdam, after submitting a transfer request at Field Mill - a rival bid from Hereford United was rejected.

Clarke's reputation as a legend in Dutch football was then cemented in a season with Ajax in which his 26 goals even led to calls for England recognition.

Returning to England with Brighton via a spell in Belgium with Club Brugge, Clarke attracted the attention of Newcastle and signed in a £180K move ahead of the 1980/81 season.

However, after just three games under the charge of Bill McGarry, a managerial change saw Arthur Cox arrive - Clarke netting his first United goal against Cardiff City when caretaker boss Joe Harvey was in charge.

Injuries and poor form saw him contribute little to the first team, save for goals in successive home games in January 1981 against Luton Town (in the FA Cup) and Bolton Wanderers.

However, the following week's game against QPR proved to be the last of Ray's career and he retired a short time later due to a persistent hip problem.

Completing his coaching badges but unable to find a job, Ray worked in the hotel trade in East Anglia and the Isle of Man.

A return to football came in 1996 when Graeme Souness - Clarke's team mate in the Spurs Youth Cup winning side of 1969/70 - named him as Southampton reserve boss.

Next came a European scouting role for Gordon Strachan's Coventry City, with Clarke based in The Hague.

A brief return to SJP as Chief Scout came in 2004 during the Souness reign, during which time he was instrumental in Newcastle's acquisition of Tim Krul from Den Haag.

Leaving United after the Souness sacking, Clarke took on a similar role at Celtic, working with Gordon Strachan once again.

2009 then saw Ray become Portsmouth's Chief Scout before a further reunion with Strachan on Teesside came a year later.

And he was announced as the new chief scout of Blackburn Rovers in September 2012, days before his 60th birthday.

Within two years, Ray had been appointed Technical Director of Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus.

A Director of Sportsline Recruitment, Clarke also founded the PFSAA - Professional Football Scouts and Analysts Association, serving as their Chairman.

1962 Chris Withe born, Speke.
(1979-83)

A left back and younger brother of Magpies striker Peter, Chris joined United as a trainee and was promoted to the first XI following the arrival of new manager, Arthur Cox.

Replacing Ian Davies for a 1-0 home victory over Shrewsbury Town in October 1980 (on the night Chris Waddle also made his senior team debut), Withe retained his place for the following game, at Chelsea.

However after a 0-6 massacre at Stamford Bridge, Cox signed Peter Johnson and he immediately replaced Withe at left back.

Failing to get back into the first team over the following two and a half seasons and affected by a knee injury, Chris joined  Bradford City on a free transfer during the summer of 1983.

Returning to SJP the following year for a League Cup tie, Withe was unable to stop the Bantams losing 1-3 and then going down by a single goal at Valley Parade.

Moving on to Notts County in 1987, Withe later appeared for Bury, Chester City, Mansfield Town and Shrewsbury Town.

Playing for the Shrews in the 1996 Football League Trophy Final (but losing 1-2 to Rotherham United at Wembley), Chris saw out the final part of his playing career at non-league Boston United - making over 100 appearances between 1996 and 1998.

Later turning out for Nottingham Sunday League side SPOT-ON 2000 alongside his son Matt, Withe also appeared for the Notts County Masters side and Notts Police Vets.

1990 Dan Neary born, Longbenton.
(2006-09)

Striker signed from Cramlington Juniors who made his Academy U18 debut against West Bromwich Albion in March 2006.

Dan's sole reserve outing for United was a brief late substitute stint against 'Boro at Billingham Synthonia in January 2008, during which he scored in a 5-0 win.

With the likes of Andy Carroll, Wesley Baheng and Nile Ranger all ahead of him at Gallowgate, Dan join Rochdale on a trial basis in February 2009, netting for them in a reserve game against Blackpool.

No Dale deal materialised however and following trials at Gateshead, Blyth Spartans and Bedlington Terriers, Neary joined Newcastle Benfield.

He later played for Morpeth Town and Northern Alliance Cramlington Town.

1998 Gideon Adu-Peprah born, Kumasi, Ghana. (2015-17)

Defender who joined United following his release by Manchester City in 2015, first appearing competitively for our U18s in a 0-0 draw at Stoke City that August.

Making a reserve team debut against West Ham at Upton Park just over a month later, Gideon played ten games at that level in his first season at the club.

A toe injury however saw him miss four months of the following campaign, returning to the U18 side in early 2017.

Released by United that May, Adu-Peprah appeared as a trialist for League Two side Cambridge United ahead of the 2017/18 season but wasn't retained.

A similarly brief sighting for Cheltenham Town reserves followed in January 2018, but again he failed to make his mark.

Gideon's next port of call was the USA, studying Psychology at the University of Central Florida and playing for their Knights soccer team.

Ron McGarry gave United the lead from the spot, netting the first attempt only to be made to retake it, confidently dispatching that one also.

However, the referee took exception to Dave's all-black strip, sending him to the dressing room to change into a more conventional green goalkeeper's top.

Things then got even worse for Hollins, who was forced off the field due to injury and replaced between the sticks by Dave Hilley.

Darren Purse - who was lucky to be still on the pitch by that point - received a second yellow after 63 minutes and for once, we made the man advantage tell.

Patrick Kluivert opened the scoring and although Mike Riley then turned down strong penalty claims, James Milner and Alan Shearer wrapped up the win, before Geoff Horsfield grabbed a late consolation for the Baggies.

2006 A goalkeeping crisis had Newcastle searching for an emergency replacement, with Shay Given sidelined and youngster Tim Krul understudying Steve Harper following the departure of Tony Caig.

However, Magnus Hedman declared on live Swedish television that he had decided to turn down an offer from Newcastle.

The 33 year-old ex-Coventry City and Celtic stopper said:

"Well, of course, it was a bit flattering, Had it been an offer for the whole season I would have been forced to think about it a bit longer."

Within days United had filled their vacancy, signing former favourite Pavel Srnicek on a short-term contract.

2017 Newcastle's experiment of beaming out home reserve games continued but those tuning in could be forgiven for switching over to Gogglebox or Bake Off.
