Premier League:
Heads you lose

Newcastle  1  Arsenal  2

Arsenal dramatically ended their losing run at Gallowgate on Sunday, turning a 0-1 deficit with seven minutes left into a 2-1 advantage after time added on.

Nick Woltemade had headed the Magpies into a 34th minute lead only for ex-Magpie Mikel Merino to come off the bench and nod home a late corner kick and make it 1-1.

Worse was to come for Eddie Howe's side, as another flag kick deep into time added on eluded Nick Pope and saw Gabriel to head into the unguarded net.

Mikel Arteta's side had left Tyneside empty-handed three times without scoring over the last two years and to the delight of home fans, he in full whinge mode when a pitchside VAR call overturned a penalty award for his side.

Referee Jarred Gillett reversed his original decision after viewing footage that established insufficient contact by Pope on Victor Gyokeres as both had sought to reach a poor back pass in the sixteenth minute.

The visiting boss was frustrated when Leandro Trossard's shot rebounded off the goal frame and further incensed when Woltemade netted, the German having made slight contact with Gabriel who tumbled over far too easily and appealed for a foul in vain.

A shanked clearance by Cristhian Mosquera gave United a corner on the left that Anthony Gordon played short to Sandro Tonali. He swung over a delightful centre allowing Big Nick to head in his second Magpies goal, from similar range to his first against Wolves at the Leazes End.

Following an additional seven minutes mostly triggered by the lengthy VAR decision, a pulsating first half ended with United having taken virtually their only scoring chance.

They would manage to fashion a couple more after the break, when Joelinton fired agonisingly across goal before Jacob Murphy raced onto an inspired Bruno through ball, only to be blocked by Declan Rice as he shaped to shoot.

In between those two rare moments of upfield action though, the relentless attacking of the visitors had called Pope into action again, this time swooping down to prevent a Jurrien Timber header from creeping inside a post.

A trio of home replacements failed to stop the ball spending increasing amounts of time in the Newcastle half and an injury to Tino Livramento saw him exit on a stretcher.

That caused a further reshuffle to a defence that began as a back four with Dan Burn at left back and Livramento on the other flank before the latter moved wings when the arrival of Kieran Trippier saw a shift to a five man unit.

Burn resumed on the left as Jamaal Lascelles joined Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw in a central trio to thwart what became increasingly desperate attempts to keep Arsenal at bay, not helped by Pope's haphazard distribution.

That pressure finally bore fruit with six minutes of normal time remaining, when a short corner was pumped in from the left by Rice and SJP old boy Mikel Merino headed it inside the far post in not dissimilar fashion to his only Toon goal, against Crystal Palace at the same end in 2017.

Barely had the celebrations subsided than a Newcastle attack ended with vociferous penalty appeals when Gabriel threw himself towards Anthony Elanga as he shaped to cross from the right hand side of the area.

A belated stoppage for a VAR review concluded that the contact came via the ball rebounding off Gabriel's shin and on to his hand - a conclusion that appeared out of keeping with several other recent spot kick awards for handball.

Thiaw and Lascelles both made timely interventions deep in their own area, before a second bout of added time misery afflicted Newcastle, replicating last month's late Liverpool loss here and leaving them empty-handed again.

This time it was a right wing corner from Odegaard that dropped into the six yard box, Pope failing to with his attempted punch and Gabriel getting ahead of Burn to prompt extravagant Arsenal celebrations at pitchside.

A heartbreaking end to a furious contest then, with a multiplicity of talking points in addition to the VAR calls - Woltemade struck in the face by the player who would supply the winning goal and visiting defenders getting away with perpetual shirt pulling by a myopic linesman.

As the manager admitted though, spirit and endeavour weren't quite enough to eclipse or contain an Arsenal side who refused to be stonewalled as in previous visits here. The moaning may have continued, but so did their drive.

With no standout contributions from United's three attacking substitutes, a reformatted defence eventually buckled under the pressure of set piece specialists.

Eddie Howe said:

"Two really late goals here at home hurts. We have to reflect and acknowledge that we weren't at our best. There was not lack of effort but from a footballing side, it wasn't quite there.

"That was probably the key thing, the number of corners. I think Odegaard made a difference to their overall performance. The weight of pressure eventually told. No lack of effort but the little details have cost us.

"I thought we tried. We gave everything to the game. It was really physical. I don't think we were at our best today being honest - Arsenal played very well.

"We had our chances in the game and we took the lead and we were desperate to try and hang on to that lead. Nick
(Pope) made some good saves for us but it wasn't to be and we conceded set-pieces at the end so disappointing.

"Early on in the game we didn't look our best physically. We looked jaded. We took the lead and sometimes you will have days, especially with the schedule we have this season, where you are not physically at your best and you have to find a way to win and we weren't able to do that.

"Martin Odegaard made a difference for them, he started to penetrate our lines more. We defended the set-pieces pretty well until the end.

"They are always a threat, they have got great players. I don't think we hit our best levels and then collectively you suffer. We were in the lead and we had what we wanted and we were looking to close the game down."

On issues with his revamped squad:

"There is a player change for us but we can't us that as an excuse. We have to win with the players we have. It was great to have Nick (Woltemade) score and we did have other chances in the game. We have to take accountability for that and do better.

Nick and Yoane
(Wissa) are totally different players and we are never going to find another Alex (Isak), but we can find a way to be effective with them in the team. Great to see Nick get two goals so early in his Newcastle career."

On his side's second half penalty claim for handball:

"I haven't seen it again so that's why I haven't mentioned it. I don't know if VAR didn't give the handball, I had a feeling it was initially but it wasn't given so you have to accept it. You have to look at yourselves first otherwise you will not grow and develop."

"You are always in the hands of VAR and I have to trust both decisions - one for us and one against us."

On the extent of Tino Livramento's injury:

"I don't know, I haven't spoken to him or anyone from the medical side yet. It doesn't sound great. The fact he came off on a stretcher is not looking good."

Stats:

Tino Livramento made his 50th Premier League start for Newcastle while Sandro Tonali reached the half century of PL appearances (39 starts).

Nick Woltemade follows Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer, Daniel Cordone, Papiss Cisse and Moussa Sissoko by scoring in both his first two Premier League home appearances.

Belfast boy

New from Pitch Publishing this Monday is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons, winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.

Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

"Bill McCracken..." is available to direct from the publisher via their Amazon shop here with an exclusive discount.

We had two copies up for grabs and asked you to predict the final score in Sunday's Newcastle v Arsenal
game.

Nine of your correctly answered that the visitors would win by the odd goal in three, meaning that a random draw was required to pick B.Chandler and David Vasey as winners.

Newcastle U18s  1  Stoke City U21s  3

A below-par performance from United's youngsters at Little Benton on Saturday morning saw them slip to their first defeat of the season.

Both sides struggled to make headway in breezy conditions before the visitors were gifted an opening goal in the 32nd minute, goalkeeper George Mair's misdirected clearance falling to Jamal Khan who supplied an accurate finish.

Stoke then twice came close to extending their advantage before the interval; Elliot Fearn's ball from the right wing glancing off the far post on 34 minutes and Pedro Nzau firing against the goal frame ten minutes later.

The Potters doubled their lead 12 minutes into the second period when striker Jayden Ogbebor met Fearn's cross and planted his first-time effort into the net.

A third away goal followed within 60 seconds after United were bullied out of possession deep in their own half, the unmarked Ryan Liu left with a routine finish.

Having lost striker Kacey Wooster and winger Mo Waddani to U21 duty the previous evening, Newcastle struggled to make any headway in the final third of the field.

15 year-old prospect Alfie Seldon did get one back with a run and shot on 72 minutes for his second goal in as many games, but Stoke were never in danger of surrendering the points despite picking up a red card during time added on - the third successive fixture they've finished with ten men.

Team: Mair, Bloomer, Goodbrand (Durrant 59), Epia, Johnson, Miley (Cogdon 59), Alabi, Taylor (Pinnington 54), Hutchison, O'Donovan (Moran 74), Seldon.

Carabao Cup:
Magpies v Cockerels

Newcastle's reward for defeating the Bantams is a Fourth Round Carabao Cup home tie against Tottenham Hotspur.

That will be played at St. James' Park during the week commencing Monday October 27th.

Season ticket holders signed up to the cup scheme will be charged £20 or £25 depending on seat location, with monies taken seven days after the fixture date is confirmed.

Fourth Round draw:

Arsenal v Brighton
Grimsby Town v Brentford
Swansea City v Manchester City
Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur
Wrexham v Cardiff City
Liverpool v Crystal Palace
Wolves v Chelsea
Wycombe Wanderers v Fulham

This is the fourth time that the two sides have been paired in this competition, United winning the 1975/76 semi-final on aggregate - losing 0-1 in North London but recovering to triumph 3-1 on Tyneside in the second leg.

The Magpies lost the next meeting 1-2 at Gallowgate in September 2008, before going down 0-4 at White Hart Lane in the most recent pairing during December 2014.

The draw gives Eddie Howe's side three successive home games in as many competitions: a Champions League tie against Benfica, the visit of Fulham in the Premier League and then concluding with the Spurs League Cup tie.

Thomas Frank's Cockerels by contrast have a trio of away fixtures: Monaco in the Champions League, Everton in the Premier League and then Newcastle at SJP.

Frank has defeated Newcastle in this competition before, guiding Brentford to a 1-0 home success during 2020/21.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

2025/26 CL away tickets are €50 or less.

On This Day in History
28th September

Born Or Died:

1918 Tommy McGarry born Heworth.
(1937-38)

Centre forward who was playing for local side Washington Colliery when invited for a trial by Huddersfield Town during 1937.

Tommy played for the Terriers in a reserve game against Newcastle at SJP, but within weeks had agreed professional terms with the Magpies.

Despite scoring four times in pre-season practice matches between NUFC XIs though, he failed to win a place in the senior side.

Spending the season in the club's Central League and Northern Alliance sides he ended  up with 43 goals to his name in total - including hat-tricks in six consecutive Northern Alliance appearances.

However, Tommy wasn't retained by United and moved on to Hartlepools in July 1938.

Subsequently signing for Bradford Park Avenue during March 1939, McGarry was called up for army service days before his 21st birthday but was able to continue playing as he was stationed at Harrogate.

He marked his return to Hartlepool with PA the following March by scoring three times against his old side but suffered a broken leg during a game a month later.

Following service in the Army (and a place in a touring XI captained by Denis Compton), McGarry signed for North Shields ahead of 1946/47 season.

A prolific scorer at Appleby Park, he moved on to Annfield Plain in 1950.

1972 Rodney Jack
born, St.Vincent, West Indies. (1996)

Compact, fleet-footed striker in the Lomana LuaLua mould, who attracted the attention of then-SJP boss Kevin Keegan after some good scouting reports from Torquay United.

Jack trained with the Magpies on a trial basis in October 1996, but returned to Plainmoor amid claims of work permit issues, a mooted £250K transfer failing to happen.

February 1997 then saw him go through a similar trial spell at the mackems, but again no deal was completed and Jack resumed his playing career with the Gulls.

A permanent transfer to Crewe Alexandra was concluded 1998, later moves taking him to Rushden & Diamonds, Oldham Athletic, Republic of Ireland side Waterford, back to Crewe, Southport and Nantwich Town.

The former St. Vincent and Grenadines international retired from playing at Nantwich in 2012, later working at a supermarket in Crewe.

1985 James Perch
born, Mansfield.
(2010-13)

A graduate of the Nottingham Forest Youth Academy, James signed his first professional contract in 2002, appearing in central midfield against the Magpies in a reserve game at the City Ground in 2005.

His first team debut had come earlier that same season and he also would go on to feature for Forest at both full back and central defence.

Missing the first half of the 2009/10 season due to injury, Perch had barely returned to the Forest side when Newcastle made an unsuccessful bid for him in January 2010.

However, his 220th and final appearance for Forest proved to be their playoff semi-final second leg defeat at home to Blackpool the following May.

Within two months James had completed a move to SJP and made his first appearance in a pre-season victory at Carlisle United.

A competitive debut followed in the season- opening defeat at Old Trafford and he kept his place at right back for the first five PL games of the season, with Danny Simpson injured.

Those five games saw him yellow-carded each time, making him the quickest player to reach a ban in Premiership history at that time.

Suspended for the League Cup win at Chelsea, James returned to the starting XI for the home game against Stoke City but headed into his own net to hand the Potters a 2-1 victory in September 2010.

Perch drifted out of the first team after the arrival of Alan Pardew, losing his place at full back and making infrequent appearances covering at centre half.

The 2011/12 season however proved to be a momentous one for Perch, who began it on the club's reserve tour of Holland and then continued to be a bit-part player for the first team until the turn of the year.

2012 saw him play an increasingly important role as international call-ups, injuries and suspensions began to have an effect.

Visibly growing in confidence during outings at full back, centre half and midfield, James became something of a cult hero, earning the affectionate nickname of "Perchinho."

Injuries to Ryan Taylor and Simpson made 2012/13 his busiest season as a Magpie: a half century of league appearances, making his European debut and scoring a first senior goal, at Old Trafford of all places.

Although Newcastle stayed up, Perch dropped down a division in a £700K move to relegated Wigan Athletic in 2013, as he began the final year of his deal.

Debuting in a 4-0 win at Barnsley, Perch's second game as a Latic saw him a Wembley loser, beaten 0-2 by Manchester United in the Charity Shield.

His second season ended with demotion to League One, James remained a Championship player when joining QPR.

An unhappy reunion with Newcastle came in September 2016, stretchered off during our 6-0 win at Loftus Road.

Perch's time in West London ended in June 2018 when he left on a free, agreeing a two year deal with Scunthorpe United following a trial at former club Wigan.

Moving on to League Two side Mansfield Town in August 2020, James suffered a fractured skull in a training ground accident just over a year later.

Making a successful playing return five months later, he remained at the Stags until summer 2023 before joining non-league Ilkeston Town that September.

Perch announced his playing retirement in January 2025.

1990 Stewart Bath born, Stockton.
(2007-09)

Academy midfielder/defender who had the briefest of introductions to reserve team football at SJP - as a 90th minute substitute against Manchester United in April 2007.

Following a handful of further appearances, Stewart was released by United two years later and had trial for Rochdale.

Appearing for both Billingham Synthonia and their Northern League rivals Town, 2010 found Bath in the USA, studying at Averett University in Virginia and playing for their Cougars soccer side.

Bath returned to UK in 2014 with Whitby Town, before further spells at both Billingham sides were dove-tailed by a diversion to Guisborough Town.

By 2016 he had moved on to Wearside League side Wolviston, becoming captain.

1995 Liam Smith born, South Shields.
(2012-18)

Midfielder who debuted for the club's U18 side as a substitute during a 0-1 defeat at Bolton in March 2012, officially joining the club's Academy during the close season.

Liam's reserve bow then came replacing Romain Amalfitano in a 4-5 home loss to West Ham at Whitley Park, three weeks before his 18th birthday in 2013.

A back problem restricted his participation for the U21s, but 16 league and cup appearances during the 2014/15 season saw Smith sign his first professional contract.

Fitness issues again hampered his progress, but after United old boy and Blackpool boss Neil McDonald saw him in a reserve game, Liam was loaned to the Tangerines.

Debuting in a 0-1 home defeat to Coventry City in March 2016, Smith played eight times for Blackpool but failed to prevent their inevitable demotion to League Two.

Liam started the 2016/17 season on loan at Crewe Alexandra, but an injury picked up against Bolton Wanderers in a friendly saw him return to Tyneside for treatment.

He went back to Crewe but another knock meant that he failed to play a game for the Alex.

Ironically, Liam scored at Gresty Road for United in an EFL Trophy group game during August 2017, but was seldom seen after then and released during June 2018.

Crewe offered him the chance to resurrect his career and he featured as a trialist in an U23 fixture against Barnsley in September 2018. However no contract offer followed.

After several years without a club, Smith joined Hebburn Town in November 2021.

Four French and four British sides (ourselves, Boro, Bolton and Liverpool) each played two games, the trophy awarded to the nation amassing the greatest number of points.

The result was 15-1 in favour of England, with the second and final year of the event in 1961 seeing Blackburn, Cardiff, Derby and Southampton run up a 10-6 winning margin.

Following a feisty 0-0 draw in Dublin, United's first European home tie since 1971 was a comfortable victory over

With one eye on costs, the visitors flew to Leeds and then drove to Newcastle by coach - stopping off en route to pick up Derby County manager Tommy Docherty.

The Rams boss was at the first leg of the tie and keen to sign Bohs duo Fran O'Brien and Gerry Ryan - adopting a hands-on approach after learning of interest in the players from Newcastle.

In the event though, only Ryan ended up at the Baseball Ground amid talk that O'Brien's medical was unsuccessful.

Recollections of attending the match as a youngster were that Bohs were a team of bearded men wearing shiny red shirts.

An elusive first home win of the season could have come from the penalty spot, as a Derby hand swiped the ball away near the goal line in a frantic finale. However, the referee was unmoved.

Once again a static United defence had conceded a set piece goal and after an hour the on-loan pairing of Bobby Davison and Ian Ormondroyd had both netted.

The second appearance of United's on-loan "striker" Andy Walker ended when he was replaced by Andy Hunt. The former non-league forward then pulled a goal back and set up Quinn for a late equaliser, as the home crowd at last had something to cheer.

The most bizarre incident of the game was missed by the pressmen in the Milburn stand, as a fierce dispute between the home and away dugouts ended with Tony Galvin kicking a bucket of water over Rams boss Arthur Cox and his assistants, and then attempting to attack the visitors with a wooden bench!

He was disarmed by his colleagues before damaging anyone.

Oba's first goals on Tyneside brought to life a distinctly sterile encounter - the first 45 minutes being instantly forgettable.

The second half was barely a minute old when Martins rose majestically to meet an Emre corner and head home.

Oba then pounced on Antoine Sibierski's knock-down to drive in off the bar and settle the tie.

Two goals in second half added time turned defeat into victory on an incredible night at Gallowgate.

City were seemingly heading for top spot when future Magpie Jacob Murphy put them 3-1 up midway through the second half.

Dwight Gayle's second of the night reduced the arrears and when Yoan Gouffran headed in, a point looked to have been salvaged.

United had other ideas though and Dwight Gayle completed his first treble for the club to send the ground into total delirium.

Defeat would have left Rafa's side languishing in ninth place but instead they ended the game in third - a point behind the Canaries and three off leaders Huddersfield Town.

A second half penalty conversion by Anthony Gordon gave United a deserved point against the reigning champions at Gallowgate.

Gordon led the line for United in the absence of toe injury victim Alexander Isak and won the spot kick when caught by City goalkeeper Ederson, coolly dispatching his effort into the Leazes End net.
