Champions League:
Union SG (a)

Newcastle play their second Champions League fixture of the season
on Wednesday, when they face the current Belgian League champions,
Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.
The tie has a 5.45pm kick-off BST, 6.45pm Belgian time and takes
place at the home ground of rivals Anderlecht.
NUFC match information is online
here
NB: Due to entrance procedures for the away end, the quickest
route for Newcastle fans is to use Veeweyde metro
station not Sint Guido, even though the latter is geographically
nearer to Lotto Park.
Following the success of a similar fanzone two seasons ago in
Dortmund, the Newcastle United Supporters Club (NUSC) have
permission to gather in Place de la Bourse.
The fanzone will operate on Tuesday night and all day Wednesday,
with the tie on TV for ticketless travellers.
Bars and restaurants are located around the square and capacity is
around 4,000 with no tickets required. The meeting point is
O'Reillys.
Update from NUFC:
Local authorities will support Newcastle United ticket holders
with a bespoke metro from the city centre to the stadium prior to
Wednesday’s game. This is put on and led by the local authorities in
Brussels.
Ticket holders that would like to use this method of transport are
asked to gather in the 'La Bourse' area for 4.45pm and they will be
escorted to the metro station to travel to the Anderlecht area.
Match tickets will be needed to travel on the metro.
Please note, this is not mandatory transport to get to Lotto Park.
Nearest Metro: Bourse.
Team:
Yoane Wissa and Jacob Ramsey remain out but Lewis Hall is expected
to return after the full back was rested for last Sunday's visit of
Arsenal.
Tino Livramento's condition is yet to be revealed after he was
stretchered off during the defeat by the Gunners.
Fabian Schar is set to return after missing three games to observe
concussion protocols but Jamaal Lascelles wasn't selected in
United's original CL squad.
Coral rate this tie as
follows:
NUFC win 6/5
The draw 5/2
USG win 21/10

USG:
Coach Sebastien Pocognoli has been in charge since 2024, having ended
his playing career at USG in 2021. The 38 year-old spent time at
West Bromwich Albion and was part of the Baggies side beaten 2-0 by
Newcastle at the Hawthorns in the Premier League during November
2014.
Fast forward to February 2017 and the full back appeared for
Brighton as the Magpies won 2-1 at the Amex in the Championship.
Union are captained by English-born defender Christian Burgess, who
enjoyed a lower league career
including spells at Hartlepool United, Peterborough United and
Portsmouth before heading to Belgium in 2021.
They remain top of the table and unbeaten in all nine league games
so far this season (19 games including last season) after a 2-0 home
win over Westerlo on Saturday.
That was staged the Joseph Marien Stadium that they have played
at for over a century. It holds 9,500 fans.
Their maiden Champions League fixture ended in a 3-1 away victory
over PSV Eindhoven.

Belfast boy
Out now from Pitch
Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill
McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons,
winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines
worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.
Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in
managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to
Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.
"Bill McCracken..." is available to

We had two copies up for grabs and asked you to predict the final score in
Sunday's Newcastle v Arsenal game.
Nine of your correctly answered that the visitors would win by the
odd goal in three, meaning that a random draw was required to pick
B.Chandler and David Vasey as winners.

A below-par performance from United's youngsters
at Little Benton on Saturday morning saw them slip to their first
defeat of the season.
Both sides struggled to make headway in breezy conditions before the
visitors were gifted an opening goal in the 32nd minute, goalkeeper
George Mair's misdirected clearance falling to Jamal Khan who
supplied an accurate finish.
Stoke then twice came close to extending their advantage before the
interval; Elliot Fearn's ball from the right wing glancing off the
far post on 34 minutes and Pedro Nzau firing against the goal frame
ten minutes later.
The Potters doubled their lead 12 minutes into the second period
when striker Jayden Ogbebor met Fearn's cross and planted his
first-time effort into the net.
A third away goal followed within 60 seconds after United were
bullied out of possession deep in their own half, the unmarked Ryan Liu left with a routine finish.
Having lost striker Kacey Wooster and winger Mo Waddani to U21 duty
the previous evening, Newcastle struggled to make any headway in the
final third of the field.
15 year-old prospect Alfie Seldon did get one back with a run and
shot on 72 minutes for his second goal in as many games, but Stoke
were never in danger of surrendering the points despite picking up a
red card during time added on - the third successive fixture they've
finished with ten men.
Team: Mair, Bloomer, Goodbrand (Durrant 59), Epia, Johnson,
Miley (Cogdon 59), Alabi, Taylor (Pinnington 54), Hutchison,
O'Donovan (Moran 74), Seldon.

Carabao Cup:
Magpies v
Cockerels
Newcastle's reward for defeating the Bantams is a
Fourth Round Carabao Cup home tie against Tottenham Hotspur.
That will be played at St. James' Park on Wednesday October 29th, kick-off 8pm.
Season ticket holders signed up to the cup scheme will be charged £20 or £25
depending on seat location.
Fourth Round draw:
Arsenal v Brighton
Grimsby Town v Brentford
Swansea City v Manchester City
Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur
Wrexham v Cardiff City
Liverpool v Crystal Palace
Wolves v Chelsea
Wycombe Wanderers v Fulham
This is the fourth time that the two sides have been
paired in this competition, United winning the 1975/76 semi-final
on aggregate - losing 0-1 in North London but recovering to triumph
3-1 on Tyneside in the second leg.
The Magpies lost the next meeting 1-2 at Gallowgate in September
2008, before going down 0-4 at White Hart Lane in the most recent pairing
during December 2014.
The draw gives Eddie Howe's side three successive home games in as
many competitions: a Champions League tie against Benfica, the visit
of Fulham in the Premier League and then concluding with the Spurs
League Cup tie.
Thomas Frank's Cockerels by contrast have a trio of away fixtures:
Monaco in the Champions League, Everton in the Premier League and
then Newcastle at SJP.
Frank has defeated Newcastle in this competition before, guiding
Brentford to a 1-0 home success during 2020/21.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log
on and complete your purchase regardless.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered
to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.
Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are
gone.
2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

Born Or Died:
1889 John Thomas
born, Sacriston
(1911-12)
Inside right who began his playing career with
Spennymoor but ended a brief spell with Brighton when
joining United for a fee of £25 ahead of the 1911/12
season.
What proved to be his sole senior outing came in a 1-1
draw against Manchester City at their Hyde Road ground
in early 1912.
Returning to Spennymoor the following season, Jack
enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry and was later
captured during the Battle of Ypres in 1915.
Successfully escaping from a German prison camp the
following year, Thomas earned the Meritorious Service
Medal and ended the conflict as an operative in mainland
Europe.
Later working in the Durham coalfield and living for a
time in Australia, Jacks' death was recorded on
Tyneside during 1947.

1899 Tom Mitchell
born, Spennymoor.
(1920-26)

Outside left who had played for Tudhoe United and
his hometown club before moving to SJP in 1920 at a
cost of £100.
Tom's first team bow came in a 0-2 loss at Chelsea in
February 1921 and he became a regular starter
during the following season, making 22 starts.
However Mitchell's first team appearances would become
less frequent in subsequent years and he was a reserve
team regular.
What proved to be his last senior outing was a 0-2 home defeat to Huddersfield
Town in March 1926 and Tom then joined Leeds United in
a £785 deal, helping his new side win promotion to
the top flight in 1927/28.
Joining York City in September 1931, Tom scored
his side's first-ever goal at their Bootham Crescent
ground the following year but hung up his boots soon
after.
Working as an FA Coach, Mitchell spent several summers
coaching in Norway before becoming York manager in March 1937.
Serving as a pilot in the RAF during World War II, Tom
resumed as the Minstermen manager in 1946, resigning in February 1950.
Joining City's board and running a
sports shop in the town for many years, Tom passed
away in November 1984, aged 85.

1986 Scott Marshall born,
Newcastle.
(2002-06)
 Reserve and Academy
player who made his debut in Newcastle's U17 side
during the 2002/03 season, appearing in the reserves for the
first time the following season.
Released by Newcastle in early 2006 after failing to
win a contract at SJP, Scott then spent some time with
Hartlepool United but didn't make a league appearance for them.
The left-sided winger then dropped into the Northern League with Bedlington
Terriers, later moves taking him on to Newcastle Benfield and North
Shields.
1997 Dan Ward born, South Shields
(2014-18)
Midfielder who agreed a scholarship at United
after a successful trial, debuting for U18
side in a 0-1 loss at Arsenal during April 2014.
Dan was then blooded in the U21s at Whitley
Park that November, coming off the bench to net in a 7-0
win over Team Northumbria in the
Northumberland Senior Cup.
Agreeing a new contract in June 2017, Ward struggled
for pitch time the following season and was released at the end of it.
Enter Middlesbrough, who offered Dan a 12 month
contract and fielded him regularly in their U23 side.
He then joined Spennymoor in June 2019 but by December had returned to
full-time football with Irish Premier League side St.
Patrick's Athletic FC.
After only a handful of games though, the
pandemic-enforced break in fixtures saw Dan return to
England with Gateshead. Moving to National League side Oldham Athletic in June
2023, Ward returned to the region a year later
with South Shields - facing the Magpies in
pre-season.

Following a 2-2
draw in London earlier that month, Newcastle memorably won
the first meeting of these sides at Gallowgate.
Tyneside-born goalkeeper William Lowery had a gentle introduction to
league football, watching watched
his new colleagues power through the Gunners.
This match
also marked the only first team appearance of Isaac Ryder,
a locally-born inside left who played most of his football
in United's Northern Alliance side.
This was only United's third game of the season, while
leaders Burslem Port Vale had played (and won) seven.

After receiving some rough treatment in the San

what to expect - and weren't disappointed.
Inter captain Giacinto Facchetti (aka "hacchetti")
singled Wyn Davies out for special treatment, while
Tommy Gibb was punched in the face by Roberto
Boninsegna - who escaped punishment.
With United 1-0 up, Inter 'keeper Lido Vieri was sent off for
punching referee Joseph Minnoy. He was later fined
£660 and banned from international football for three
years.
Writing in The Journal, former Magpie Ivor
Broadis described the Inter antics thus: "Pushing,
punching, body-checking – you name it, Inter threw

skullduggery."

After the eight goal hammering of Sheffield
Wednesday in the previous home game, this was
comparatively underwhelming - although the business of
making it through to the next round was achieved with
something to spare.
After CSKA took a shock lead when Steve Harper was
lobbed from distance, Alan Shearer levelled with a
close range effort.
Paul Robinson then replaced Silvio Maric in the closing
stages and looked to have won it when
he diverted a Stephen Glass cross into the goal via his
standing foot.
The Bulgarians however equalised in the final seconds of the game
when one of their substitutes headed in at the far post.
