Champions League:
Lotto Winners!
Union SG 0 Newcastle 4

Newcastle won their second Champions League fixture of the season
when they put four past reigning Belgian champions, Union Saint-Gilloise
at Anderlecht's Lotto Park ground on Wednesday evening.
Two goals in each half made it a comfortable night's work for Eddie
Howe's side as they found their scoring touch with Anthony Gordon
netting two spot-kicks and Nick Woltemade and Harvey Barnes also on
target.
United opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Woltemade got the
final touch on a Sandro Tonali snapshot after an Anthony Elanga
cross had been partially cleared.
The winger caused problems for the home side down the right and when
he cut across the edge of the area as half-time approached he was
sent tumbling and referee Urs Schnyder pointed to the spot.
Gordon made no mistake from 12 yards to send his side into the break
with a two-goal cushion.
USG came out fighting after the interval and forced Nick Pope into
several saves as the Belgians tried to force their way back into the
tie.
But unexpectedly a handball appeal in the 64th minute saw the
referee sent to his monitor and he didn't take long in deciding to
award another penalty that Gordon dispatched firmly into the corner
to make it 3-0.
Then came the goal of the game as substitutes Will Osula and Harvey
Barnes combine to finish off a flowing move to complete the scoring.
Tonali thought he had got a fifth near the end but Scherpen made a
stunning stop to deny the Italian and after four minutes of added
time the final whistle was blown on a memorable night on the
continent.
Full match report to follow.

After the game Eddie Howe said:
"There are things we can improve but it was a big step in the
right direction, an important stage as well in the Champions League
because we have to start well.
"These competitions are so high and the demands are so big on us
that if we're slow starters, we could leave ourselves too much to
do, so I certainly leave here in a lot healthier, positive frame of
mind and I'm looking forward to the next game.
About Woltemade:
"His potential is high. It is an exciting start for him and he's
done really really well, and more importantly he is willing, wants
to do the work and wants to improve.
"It is difficult to put a percentage on what he is right now but
there is more to come physically and tactically as we go through the
journey together with him.
"We will be doing a lot of physical work with him to get him robust
enough for the Premier League week in, week out."

Belfast boy
Out now from Pitch
Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill
McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons,
winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines
worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.
Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in
managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to
Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

We had two copies up for grabs and asked you to predict the final score in
Sunday's Newcastle v Arsenal game.
Nine of your correctly answered that the visitors would win by the
odd goal in three, meaning that a random draw was required to pick
B.Chandler and David Vasey as winners.

A below-par performance from United's youngsters
at Little Benton on Saturday morning saw them slip to their first
defeat of the season.
Both sides struggled to make headway in breezy conditions before the
visitors were gifted an opening goal in the 32nd minute, goalkeeper
George Mair's misdirected clearance falling to Jamal Khan who
supplied an accurate finish.
Stoke then twice came close to extending their advantage before the
interval; Elliot Fearn's ball from the right wing glancing off the
far post on 34 minutes and Pedro Nzau firing against the goal frame
ten minutes later.
The Potters doubled their lead 12 minutes into the second period
when striker Jayden Ogbebor met Fearn's cross and planted his
first-time effort into the net.
A third away goal followed within 60 seconds after United were
bullied out of possession deep in their own half, the unmarked Ryan Liu left with a routine finish.
Having lost striker Kacey Wooster and winger Mo Waddani to U21 duty
the previous evening, Newcastle struggled to make any headway in the
final third of the field.
15 year-old prospect Alfie Seldon did get one back with a run and
shot on 72 minutes for his second goal in as many games, but Stoke
were never in danger of surrendering the points despite picking up a
red card during time added on - the third successive fixture they've
finished with ten men.

Newcastle's reward for defeating the Bantams is a
Fourth Round Carabao Cup home tie against Tottenham Hotspur.
That will be played at St. James' Park on Wednesday October 29th, kick-off 8pm.
Season ticket holders signed up to the cup scheme will be charged £20 or £25

Fourth Round draw:
Arsenal v Brighton
Grimsby Town v Brentford
Swansea City v Manchester City
Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur
Wrexham v Cardiff City
Liverpool v Crystal Palace
Wolves v Chelsea
Wycombe Wanderers v Fulham
This is the fourth time that the two sides have been
paired in this competition, United winning the 1975/76 semi-final
on aggregate - losing 0-1 in North London but recovering to triumph
3-1 on Tyneside in the second leg.
The Magpies lost the next meeting 1-2 at Gallowgate in September
2008, before going down 0-4 at White Hart Lane in the most recent pairing
during December 2014.
The draw gives Eddie Howe's side three successive home games in as
many competitions: a Champions League tie against Benfica, the visit
of Fulham in the Premier League and then concluding with the Spurs
League Cup tie.
Thomas Frank's Cockerels by contrast have a trio of away fixtures:
Monaco in the Champions League, Everton in the Premier League and
then Newcastle at SJP.
Frank has defeated Newcastle in this competition before, guiding
Brentford to a 1-0 home success during 2020/21.

On This Day in History |
|
1st October |

Born Or Died:
1932 Alf McMichael born, Belfast, Northern
Ireland. (1949-63)
Left
back Alf arrived from Linfield along with with
Englishman George
Hannah for a combined cost of £23,000 in 1949 and
both made an instant impact for their new club.
Expecting to watch United’s home fixture with
Manchester City, the newly-acquired duo travelled to
Tyneside via Stranraer by ferry and train – only to
be told they were playing when they reported to SJP.
Missing the 1951 FA Cup Final with a broken wrist
sustained whilst training on the club's car park at
Gallowgate, Alf collected a winner's medal against
Arsenal 12 months on.
However, ligament damage saw him miss out again in the
1955 Final victory, although he had played two weeks
before the final and netted his only senior
competitive goal in a home victory against Cardiff
City.
Winning 40 international caps for Northern Ireland
whilst at United, Alf appeared in the 1958 World Cup
Finals and remained at SJP until 1963, when he became
player/boss of South Shields.
He later returned to his native Northern Ireland and
settled in Bangor, managing the town's football team
for a time and working at the Belfast shipyard of
Harland & Wolff.
McMichael passed away in January 2006.

1939 Duncan Neale born, Portslade, Sussex.
(1959-63)
 Right
half who joined Newcastle from non- league side Ilford
and netted twice on his debut, in a 7-2 home win over
Fulham.
Duncan's next goal wrote another footnote in club history,
as he netted our first ever goal in the new League Cup
competition - although the club exited at the first
round stage after a 4-1 loss at Colchester United.
His FA Cup debut that same season saw him in
scoring form against The Cottagers again - notching a
hat trick in a 5-0 Third Round victory at SJP, when he
was ostensibly deployed to mark Johnny Haynes!
A versatile player who appeared in a variety of
outfield positions for United, Duncan was unable to
prevent the club's relegation in 1961 and played for
two further seasons as 8th and 7th places were reached
in the hunt for promotion back to the top
flight.
Sold to Plymouth Argyle for £12,000 as part of Joe
Harvey's squad rebuilding programme, Duncan remained
in the South West, later appearing for Plymouth City
and setting up a building business in Cornwall.

January 2021 saw Duncan make the national news, becoming the
first person to receive their COVID jab at a newly-opened
vaccine centre inside Argyle's Home Park stadium.

1943 Iam McFaul born, Coleraine, Northern Ireland.
(1966-75 player, 1985-88 Manager)
 Goalkeeper
famously signed by United despite conceding seven
goals for Linfield in a friendly match at SJP in
September 1966.
Making his debut in a 0-2 home defeat by Liverpool
in November of the same year, Iam had become first
choice between the posts by the summer of 1968 and
played in all but one of the club's 59 games that
season.
He appeared in all twelve games of the club's
first European adventure, doing his bit to get United
into the final with a penalty save against Rangers at
Ibrox.
Future Fairs Cup campaigns in the following two
seasons saw Iam maintain his 100% appearance record,
scoring in the penalty shootout against Pecsi Dozsa in
1970/71, when the referee summoned United back from
the dressing room to complete the sequence of kicks -
despite the Hungarians having already won on
penalties.
Often featured on TV as the goalkeeper who concedes
two goals at Hereford in 1972, Willie played what was
to be his final game for the club at the end of the
1974/75 season, moving on to the SJP coaching staff.
Installed for the first time as caretaker manager
(briefly) in 1977, McFaul then took over again in 1985
following the abrupt departure of Jack Charlton and
was soon handed the job on a permanent basis.
Giving youth team startlet Paul Gascoigne his first
senior start, Iam (by now universally known as Willie)
kept the side together despite the departures of
messrs Waddle, Beardsley and later Gascoigne.
However, a spending spree ahead of the 1988/89 season
proved to be his downfall as new boys Dave Beasant,
Andy Thorn and John Hendrie failed to improve his side
and he was dismissed following a run of poor results.
McFaul returned to his native Northern Ireland and
worked as an Irish FA coach and with local sides
before accepting a FIFA -backed posting to become the
coach of Guam, an island in the South Pacific.
By 2004 Willie was back coaching in his homeland, as
well as scouting for Norwich City during Glenn
Roeder's time in Norfolk.
He returned to SJP in 2009 to take part in the 40th
anniversary celebrations of the Fairs Cup victory and confessed that he was
"delighted and a wee bit emotional" to be reunited with his colleagues and the
trophy.

1945 Death of Bob Bennie, 72.
(1901-04)

1951 Death of Peter McWilliam, 73.
(1902-11)

1952 Death of Jack Fraser, 75.
(1899-1901)

1986 Carl Finnigan born, Jarrow.
(2001-07)
 Striker
who graduated from academy and reserve sides to the
verge of first team selection, but whose only senior
action came in friendlies at Malaga and
Norwich City.
Released by United in 2007, Carl joined Falkirk after a trial with
St.Mirren and scoring his first Bairns goal during a
2-1 SPL loss to Rangers at Ibrox in February
2007.
Despite injury and illness problems, he signed a new
contract by Falkirk in summer 2009 and played in their
first-ever European tie, against
FC Vaduz of Liechtenstein. although seeing red
following a post-match skirmish.
Signing for St. Johnstone in June 2011, he later
appeared for Dundee Chippa United (South Africa) and
Gateshead.
Summer 2015 then saw the player nicknamed
"Rocky" make an unlikely move to Township Rollers of the Botswana Premier
League.
Within a year though he was back in the UK, joining
Northern League side South Shields and after helping
them to promotion netted at Wembley
Stadium in the Final of the FA Vase.
Later moves then took him to Whickham, Morpeth Town and Dunston UTS.
1998 Callum Smith born, Gateshead.
(2015-18)
Part of
the Magpies U17 squad who returned with silverware
from the Tournoi event in France during May 2015,
winger Callum was blooded at U18 level in the final
game of the season against Norwich that same month.
Netting his first goal at that level to round off a 5-4
home defeat of Derby County during October, an U21
debut then followed against Aston Villa at Walsall the
following January.
An encouraging 2016/17 season for the U18
side also saw Callum featuring at reserve level, but
he failed to impress in the U23s during the following
campaign and departed from the club in June
2018.
On trial at Hull City U23s earlier in 2018, Smith signed a 12 month contract with
the Championship club but didn't make a competitive senior debut for the
Tigers.
He later played for Dunston UTS, North Shields and Birtley Town.
2002 Joe White born, Carlisle.
(2018-present)
Attacking
midfielder signed from hometown club Carlisle United,
playing for Newcastle at the NI SuperCup event in July 2018.
Making a competitive U18 debut at home to West Bromwich Albion that August, Joe
scored twice during 16 league and cup appearances at that level.
Promoted to the reserves in pre-season for a game at Hibernian, 16 year-old
White appeared at the NI SuperCup again - four goals helping Newcastle reach the Final where they were beaten by Valencia.
A hectic few weeks then saw him train with the senior squad before a
competitive bow for the U23s against West Ham that August.
Joe's last-gasp goal won the U18 derby the following month
and his 17th birthday saw a first
professional deal.
Making his senior bow during a pre-season visit to Rotherham
United in August 2021, White was named on the bench for the
first time in the Premier League at Manchester United a
month later.
Loaned to Hartlepool United in January
2022, a first team senior debut came in an FA Cup tie against Crystal
Palace.
The 2022/23 season found White loaned to League One Exeter City, before
a temporary switch to League Two Crewe Alexandra a
year later after appearing for his parent club in
pre-season.
February 2024 brought a competitive bow for
Newcastle, making the first of four substitute
appearances in a 2-2 PL home draw with Bournemouth.
And after more pre-season minutes for the Magpies,
Joe was loaned to League Two MK Dons for the
2024/25 campaign.
After featuring again in pre-season another loan saw Joe
join League One side Leyton Orient, although injury
restricted his appearances.

The
visit of the "crack" Brazilians was a
farce when they were revealed to be minor league
part-timers.
Len White and Arthur Bottom indulged in their own private
SJP scoring competition, even going so far as to block
each others shots.
Bela Vista moved on to Boro, losing by the comparatively
unremarkable margin of 0-4.

The visitors were gifted an early lead when Malcolm Lucas
put through his own goal, but goals from Gordon Bolland

Alan Suddick then forced extra time with a late leveller

goals from Graham again and Norman Deeley won it for the

Gary Gillespie gave Liverpool an early lead and most
of the crowd sat back and waited for an avalanche of
goals, only for John Hendrie to net his first Newcastle
goal.
Better was to follow as a long punt from Dave Beasant
bounced once and Hendrie fell in the box under challenge
from Gillespie.
Mirandinha scored the resultant penalty and stood taunting
the Kop before being dragged away by John Anderson.
United hung on for the last seven minutes to give manager
Willie McFaul a fine birthday present, and the local
police a problem as they tried to clear the celebrating
United fans from the ground.

One of the most
amazing and error-strewn nights in our history, with
penalties needed to separate the sides after 90 minutes
(3-3) and 30 minutes of extra time (6-6) failed.
A small Prenton Park crowd and a live TV audience that
probably wasn't much bigger then saw United lose on

missed, David Roche and Gavin Peacock netting.

- one later officially given as an own goal.
This all unfolded to the delight of the small following of

Recalled by your correspondent with mixed feelings,
after his night ended with a smack in the face from a
Serbian baseball bat.
Still it could have been much, much worse - a fan was shot
outside the stadium before the game during clashes between
rival groups of the "Grobari" (home fans).
Even getting to Serbia was an achievement, with travel
restrictions caused by escalating political tensions in
the Balkans requiring a circuitous route to be taken.
As to the game itself, a dubious penalty was enough to
knock us out on away goals, David Batty adjudged to have
fouled Ivic.
Batty had been unimpressed when Channel5 chose to promote
their live coverage of this game with a mocked up photo of
him clad in stockings and suspenders - a reference to
manager Ruud Gullit's "sexy football".

Newcastle's
third successive PL victory at Craven Cottage was helped
by the VAR call that saw
Fulham's
Nathaniel Chalobah dismissed early on for a
serious foul.
Within three minutes Callum Wilson put
United ahead before a
sublime left foot volley from Miggy Almiron made it
2-0.
Aleksandar Mitrovic hobbled off and
fellow SJP old boy Kevin
Mbabu was substituted before the break
as Longstaff
hit
a third.
Miggy struck again
after the restart and thought he'd grabbed a hat-trick only
for a raised offside flag to deny
him.

United made it into the
last 16 of
the Carabao Cup after a low-key victory over the
League Two Wombles in a rearranged Third Round tie.
Water damage to the Plough Lane pitch had led to the postponement
of the game the previous week and with no prospect of play in SW19
the tie moved to SJP.
Fabian Schar captained the side and side-footed home
his penalty in
first half time added on, after Miggy Almiron
was
upended in the
box by Joe Pigott.
