Update:
Willie McFaul RIP

Former goalkeeper, coach and manager Willie McFaul sadly died on Saturday, just days after his 82nd birthday.

Willie, or Iam as he was also known, was a goalkeeper famously signed by United despite conceding seven goals for Linfield in a friendly match at SJP in September 1966.

Making his debut in a 0-2 home defeat by Liverpool in November of the same year, Iam had become first choice between the posts by the summer of 1968 and played in all but one of the club's 59 games that season.

He appeared in all twelve games of the club's first European adventure, doing his bit to get United into the final with a penalty save against Rangers at Ibrox.

Future Fairs Cup campaigns in the following two seasons saw Iam maintain his 100% appearance record, scoring in the penalty shootout against Pecsi Dozsa in 1970/71, when the referee summoned United back from the dressing room to complete the sequence of kicks - despite the Hungarians having already won on penalties.

Often featured on TV as the goalkeeper who concedes two goals at Hereford in 1972, Willie played what was to be his final game for the club at the end of the 1974/75 season, moving on to the SJP coaching staff.

Installed for the first time as caretaker manager (briefly) in 1977, McFaul then took over again in 1985 following the abrupt departure of Jack Charlton and was soon handed the job on a permanent basis.

Giving youth team startlet Paul Gascoigne his first senior start, Iam (by now universally known as Willie) kept the side together despite the departures of messrs Waddle, Beardsley and later Gascoigne.

However, a spending spree ahead of the 1988/89 season proved to be his downfall as new boys Dave Beasant, Andy Thorn and John Hendrie failed to improve his side and he was dismissed following a run of poor results.

McFaul returned to his native Northern Ireland and worked as an Irish FA coach and with local sides before accepting a FIFA -backed posting to become the coach of Guam, an island in the South Pacific.

By 2004 Willie was back coaching in his homeland, as well as scouting for Norwich City during Glenn Roeder's time in Norfolk.

He returned to SJP in 2009 to take part in the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Fairs Cup victory and confessed that he was "delighted and a wee bit emotional" to be reunited with his colleagues and the trophy.

The Magpies return to Premier League action on Sunday when the Tricky Trees trek to Tyneside for a 2pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports.

Local hat sellers Football Bobbles will have a stall outside the Trent House pub from Noon, with a new range of scarves on sale. Card payments accepted.

Team: The knee injury Tino Livramento suffered against Arsenal is predicted to sideline him until late November.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that Yoane Wissa is now expected to be missing until West Ham or Brentford in early November, but Jacob Ramsey could be on the bench for Sunday.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 4/7
The draw 16/5
NFFC win 9/2

NFFC: Forest visit Tyneside having failed to win any of the six league and cup games since Ange Postecoglu replaced Nuno Espirito Santo at the City Ground.

Away from home so far, they've drawn 1-1 at Crystal Palace and Burnley and lost 0-3 at Arsenal.

Olaoluwa Aina, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Douglas Luiz are unavailable, while central defender Murillo is a doubt after he went off injured during the first half of Thursday's 2-3 home defeat by Danes Midtjylland in the Europa League.

Ange Postecoglu lost both of his PL visits to SJP while managing Spurs, beaten 4-0 and 2-1.

Referee: Peter Bankes. The Lancashire official has already reffed us once this season - at Leeds United - where he only waved one yellow to each side.

VAR: Chris Kavanagh.

Following a 0-2 home defeat by AFC Wimbledon that left Blackpool second bottom of League One on Saturday, the Seasiders dismissed manager Steve Bruce.

Ex-Magpie coaches Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence also leave Bloomfield Road with immediate effect.

PS: As Bruce departs, his immediate predecessor at SJP has a new job, with Ben Dawson taking up a coaching position at Danish side Brondby.

Out of football since leaving Leicester City in February, the 44 year-old is reunited with his former Foxes boss Steve Cooper at the Superliga side.

Cup capitulation

Aston Villa U18s  7  Newcastle U18s  1

Newcastle's U18 side returned to Premier League Cup action on Saturday, suffering a second half nightmare against Aston Villa at their Bodymoor Heath training facility.

It was 1-1 at half-time when a Tom Old effort from close range equalised Markie Meade's fifth minute opener for the hosts 20 minutes later.

It was still level with half an hour remaining, but after Jack McGrath put Villa ahead, Teddie Bloomfield (70) got a third Meade (71) and McGrath (80) got their second goals.

Meade then completed his hat-trick two minutes from the end before the scoring was completed in the fourth minute of added time when Olly Lloyd got Villa's seventh.

The home side featured Cole Ramsey, younger brother of current Magpie Jacob.

Team: Dowell, Bloomer, Goodbrand (Durrant 59), Old, Moran, M.Miley (Cogdon 59), Pinnington (Patterson 75), Ireoluwa, O'Donovan (Lucas 75), Seldon, Hutchison.

The North Londoners have won four out of their opening five PL2 games this season, including both away ones: a 5-3 success at the mackems and 6-3 victory at Leicester.

U19s:
Belgians prevail

USG U19s  2  Newcastle U19s  0

Newcastle U19s were left to rue a host of missed chances on Wednesday, as they suffered their second successive defeat in this season's UEFA U19 Youth League.

Although their traditional
Joseph Marien Stadium home wasn't chosen to host Champions League ties, the youth meeting of the sides was staged there, with a mixture of supporters and officials in the 100 year-old stand.

To the delight of home fans and parents, Union took the lead in just the sixth minute when Youssef Hamoutahar evaded Scott Bailey on the left, made his way into the box and fired beyond goalkeeper George Mair.

After a slow start, United began to dominate and fashion a trio of presentable opportunities; Sean Neave lobbing Girogi Kavlashvili only for a defender to intervene, Mo Waddani losing his one on one with the goalkeeper and Leo Shahar's free kick from a dangerous position blocked.

SG extended their advantage in the third minute of added time when Sekou Keita bundled in a corner at the back amid protests from the visitors - it's unclear whether they were claiming a foul or handball but Macedonian referee Jovan Kachevski was unmoved - having earlier booked Sam Alabi for querying the lack of free kick for a clear foul on him.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with the young Magpies enjoying the lion's share of possession but still  unable to fashion many clear chances.

The closest they came was when Neave struck the upright in the 71st minute with the goalkeeper rooted to the spot; substitute Park Seung-soo busy down the left without providing a killer pass or cross.

Team: Mair, Shahar, Johnson (Epia 63), Watts, Charlton (Goodbrand 76), Munda, Bailey (Bloomer 65), Finneran, Alabi (Park Seung-soo 46), Neave, Waddani (Wooster 63).
Subs n/u: Dowell, Brayson, O'Donovan, Yildiz.

Booked: Alabi, Watts.

USG: Kavlashvili, Niat (Oumouri 69), Steenhaut, Zbakh (Tabich 81), Lindner (Rosado 46), El Marini, Recchia, Moussaoui (Di Franco 69), Da Mota Lucas Rosado, Hamoutahar (Apedo 81), Keita.
Subs n/u: D'Haeseleer, Amisi, Oubella, Setta.

Booked: Da Mota Lucas Rosado.

Both sides had lost their opening game in this competition; United edged out 2-3 by Barcelona at Whitley Park and Union beaten 2-6 by PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

Belfast boy

Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons, winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.

Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

On This Day in History
4th October

Born Or Died:

1987 Suddouk Al Haj born, Algeria.
(2005)

Who? The winner of the 2005 SoccaStars Tournament (on the right of the photo).

Suddouk beat off competition from thousands of other youngsters in the Pan-Arabic event to win a year's contract at Newcastle Academy after being selected by Peter Beardsley.

However, the player who was likened to Nolberto Solano and had reportedly never played on grass before the tournament - was denied a UK visa.

SoccaStars runners-up Mohamed El Gabbas (Egypt) and Abdul Rahman Al Bukhari (Saudi Arabia) were also given one year Academy placements on Tyneside and unlike Suddouk made it to England.

Striker Gabbas played for Newcastle in a reserve friendly at Esh Winning in October 2005 and he and Bukhari were introduced to the SJP crowd before the Arsenal home game two months later.

There were no more Tyneside sightings but Gabbas returned to his native Egypt with El Masry in Port Said and by 2009 was also in the Egyptian national side - and rejoicing in the nickname of "Dodo".

Joining Belgians Lierse in 2009, he moved on to Swindon Town four years later and made 10 senior appearances during the 2013/14 season without scoring.

Signing for French side Arles, a return to Egypt then came with Cairo-based Wadi Degla during 2014.

Rejoining Lierse two years later, by 2018 Gabbas had returned to Wadi Degla after his contract in Belgium expired.

1989 Frank Wiafe Danquah born, Amsterdam, Netherlands. (2006-10)

Striker who began his career at Ajax before joining United, only to break his leg shortly after moving to England.

Recovering fitness, his reserve debut came against Manchester United in March 2007 and he was blooded at senior team level in a friendly against Hull City four months later.

After another brief outing in a friendly against PSV Eindhoven at SJP a year later, Frank making the first team bench for the only time as a Magpie - the infamous Hull City home defeat in September 2008.

Finally released in 2010, Danquah joined Stockport County (trial), Bournemouth (trial), Ferencvaros (Hungary), Waasland Beveren (Belgium) Kayseri Erciyesspor (Turkey) (trial), Elche (Spain) (trial), Gateshead (trial), Newcastle Benfield, FC Chabab (Holland) FC Brasov (Romania) and Targa Mures (Romania).

2014 saw Frank in his native Netherlands at Achilles 29 before moving on to
FC Lienden and then Fortuna Sittard.

By 2017 he was back at Lienden before a brief spell with NEC Amateurs, signing for VV DUNO in the Dutch Hoofdklasse.

2010 The death of entertainer Norman Wisdom. He was 95.

A former Brighton & Hove Albion Director, Norman was a Toon sympathiser who attributed his liking for United to the influence of Amble-born Newcastle fan Patrick Dickinson, who served with him in the Royal Signals.

September 2001 saw Norman grace the SJP turf as guest of honour for the England v Albania international. In recognition of his heroic status in Albania, he took to the field wearing a special half-in-half kit.

Making regular visits to the region, Sir Norman appeared on stage with fellow Knights Bobby Robson and John Hall at Ramside Hall in 2003 - performing an impromptu version of his signature tune, "Don't Laugh At Me...."

2025 Death of Willie McFaul, 82.
(1966-75 player, 1985-88 Manager)

Much-loved goalkeeper who starred in United's 1968/69 Fairs Cup triumph and remained on the coaching staff until appointed manager in succession to Jack Charlton.

Beaten 1-6 at West Bromwich Albion a week earlier, Newcastle returned to winning ways, making it four victories from five games.

The Nottingham Post
advised that the away side reached Newcastle by train at Midnight the previous evening and that "the morning was whiled away by an inspection of some of the sights the busy port of Tyne offers to its visitors, and by catching as much of the sea ozone as possible."

Taking in the air may have indeed helped Notts - who had lost 8-0 at Gallowgate the previous season.

1995 Christmas came early as Spurs paid an almighty £4.2m to lure Ruel Fox away from SJP. Muchos Gracias, senor Ardiles.

1996 Another unannounced game, this time at Longbenton where the reserves played a Hearts side and won 4-0. Goals came from Lee Clark, Rob Lee and a Paul Kitson brace.

Mr Dependable, Alan Shearer, secured our first Premiership victory of the season against his old club - and quelled the increasing chatter about dressing room strife among Bobby Robson's squad.

Big Al's 44th minute strike - his 250th career league goal - was the difference on a nervy day at SJP. Saints were there to be beaten but United made hard work of it.

2004 No lack of effort from Tommy Craig's side and an improvement on the previous week's dismal showing against Forest but it ended goalless against Liverpool Reserves.

That meant it was just two home goals in six hours of reserve football for the faithful, and we seldom looked like improving that tally.

And had it not been for a fine save by Tony Caig with fifteen minutes remaining to deny striker Neil Mellor, then Liverpool would have left Tyneside with all three points.

2006 A statement was released by the Football Federation Australia regarding Newcastle defender Craig Moore:

"Craig Moore has been suspended from the Qantas Socceroos squad for the match against Paraguay this coming weekend. Moore had not reported for training when the squad assembled in Brisbane."

Moore claimed that a combination of sleeping pills and jet lag had caused him to miss the flight. However, our info suggested that a day at the races (seeing his horse come second) and a night at the casino might have had a little more to do with it....

2007 The Manchester Evening News reported:

Former Manchester City player Joey Barton appeared before Trafford Magistrates today accused of assaulting a team mate at the club's Carrington training complex.

The 25-year-old, now playing for Newcastle United, was dressed smartly in a blue suit during the brief hearing, which was adjourned until November 22 when Barton will re-appear at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing.

Barton, is charged with section 47 assault on Ousmane Dabo.

2009
SkySports continued their one-eyed coverage of the NUFC/Kevin Keegan litigation, as the club's former Executive Director (football) Dennis Wise appeared on punditry duties and spoke about his time at SJP.

Wise had appeared in a similar role earlier in the week, backing Chris Hughton to be given the United job on a permanent basis.

Interviewed by Richard Keys, Wise took the opportunity to repeat previous propaganda from the Ashley camp - as well as offer a counter view to the claims made in Kevin Keegan's post-verdict statement.

Most notably, Wise claimed that a settlement offer was made to KKahead of the tribunal:

"There was an offer put in by Mike I believe, and it was probably more than what Kevin got.....to settle it, yes....for more than the two million yes."

He also reinforced the line about the inflated sums that KK's legal team had sought:

"Mike was worried....when someone is suing you for £26m..."

And the "A" word almost inevitably made an appearance when Wise was asked what would have happened to his former employers had KK received a larger award:

"Maybe administration"

As for his own relations with KK, Wise ventured that:

"It was a difficult situation."

When Wise was asked for his opinion of what Mike Ashley's next move at SJP would be:

"I think he will hold onto the club until they are promoted. I think they'll go up this year, I genuinely hope they do, then Mike will take a decision next summer."

2011 The Reserves made it four games without defeat from the start of the season by beating Bolton 3-0 at Leyland. A brace from Sylvain Marveaux and one from Sammy Ameobi decided the destination of the points.

Shola Ameobi's 13th European goal and an OG made for a comfortable half time lead and although Rob Elliot had to be replaced by Steve Harper, Papiss Cisse quickly volleyed in a third to put Newcastle top of Group D.

Future Magpie Yoan Gouffran started for the visitors before making way for former mackem David Bellion.

2015 Under the inevitable headline of "Dick out" we reported that mackems boss Dick Advocaat had resigned with immediate effect.

Dick's departure meant that the red and whites would again replace their manager ahead of a derby - a stunt they successfully pulled in April 2013 (Di Canio), October 2013 (Poyet) and March 2015 (Advocaat) - with all gaining their first wins by beating us.

Sadly, former Mag Sam Allardyce would become the fourth addition to that list.

2017 From ITV News:

Newcastle United have lost a High Court challenge over the seizure of documents by tax officials investigating the financial affairs of several football clubs.

St. James' Park and West Ham United's ground were raided in April by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) as part of a probe into suspected income tax and National Insurance fraud.

Newcastle's managing director, Lee Charnley, whose home was also searched, was among a number of senior European football officials arrested and later released without charge.

2018
Goals from Elias Sorensen and Callum Roberts gave United U23s a 2-1 victory over Notts County at Whitley Park in the Premier League Cup.

Four different scorers including a fabulous strike from Fabian Schar silenced the noisy Parisians, on a night when a home defence led by Jamaal Lascelles kept Kylian Mbappe under wraps. Magnifique !
