Premier League:
Brazilian reign
Forest !
Newcastle 2 Nottingham Forest 0

Two vital contributions from Bruno
Guimaraes helped United to deepen the woes of an ailing but
obstinate Nottingham Forest side at Gallowgate on Sunday afternoon.
Following a scoreless first half when the efforts of midweek looked
to have adversely affected an unchanged line-up, Newcastle's
Brazilian captain lifted his side with a superb strike before
winning a penalty kick that Nick Woltemade dispatched into the roof
of the net to seal victory.
That decision to send out the same side that started against Union
SG was partly forced on Eddie Howe; Lewis Hall joining fellow full
back Tino Livramento on the sidelines with a hamstring issue of
unknown severity.
Winless in all six games since Ange Postecoglu took over from Nuno Espirito
Santo at the City Ground, the visitors only rarely threatened Nick
Pope's goal in a tepid opening 45 minutes, but restricted the hosts
to only half-chances.
Two of those opportunities fell to Joelinton, who directed one shot at Matz Sels and forced the former Magpie custodian into a
smarter stop from a close range header.
Other than that
though, Sels had little to do as the home side struggled to get
anything resembling service from the flanks into the box - Anthony
Elanga failing to make any great impression against his old side.
The second half opened with a rare example of a goalbound effort
from Woltemade not ending up in the net; Gordon teasing down the
left and centring for Morato to tee up the German but then block his
instant first-time volley.
Frustration turned to relief just before the hour however, Bruno
bullying Morgan Gibbs-White in central midfield and Dan Burn setting off
towards the Gallowgate goal before slipping a pass for our number 39
to beautifully curl in a shot from outside the box as Ryan Yates
tried to block.
Forest protests over a foul were waved away and United quickly set
about trying to wrap up their second league victory of the season,
after a moment of panic when Chris Wood was left unattended in front
of the home goal before an offside flag was raised.
Belgian Sels was proving rather harder to beat than his fellow
countrymen had in Brussels on Wednesday; making a string of stops to
foil Sandro Tonali, Malick Thiaw and Harvey Barnes while Woltemade also
rattled the Forest crossbar.
Former Magpie Elliot Anderson set up United's second goal with six
minutes of normal time remaining, tempted into an unwise collision
on the edge of his own box with Bruno at the cost of United's third spot
kick in just two games.
With Anthony Gordon replaced earlier in the half, Woltemade snared the ball before confidently hoofing into the top left hand
corner of the net as Sels looked on helplessly.
Three points saw United climb four places into eleventh, also
registering their fifth clean sheet in seven PL games.

United wore black armbands in tribute to their player and
manager Willie McFaul, following his death on Saturday, but didn't
stage a minute's silence - a decision that seemed both ill-advised
and disrespectful in equal measure to us.
By contrast, Brentford chose to pay tribute ahead of Sunday's PL
home game to their recently-deceased Academy Goalkeeping Coach Chris
Ramsey.
Referee: Peter Bankes. The
Lancashire official has already reffed us once this season - at
Leeds United - where he only waved one yellow to each side.
VAR: Chris Kavanagh.
Eddie Howe said:
"A
huge win for us. The players have done really well in this week to
recover from the Arsenal game in the way that they have and speed,
to put that game to the back of our minds and to refocus on two
hugely important games, Champions League, to get our season going in
that competition.
"And then, of course, the importance of
the Premier League. It’s such an important competition for us. We’ve
maintained very good standards the last few years. We needed to
maintain them. At home, I thought it was vital we won today.
"I thought it was a good performance.
Tough opponents, defended very deep, a lot of men behind the ball,
we had to be patient. I thought we played some really good football
in both halves.
"I thought in the second half we played a lot quicker and a lot more
dynamic. And we asked more questions of them and eventually we got
rewarded for that. But I thought we controlled the game in both
halves. I can’t really ask any more of the players.
"Good performance. Not a lot of
goalmouth action in the first half so we had to be patient today.
The second half was better. I thought we had control of the second
half and we needed a moment to bring us the goal.
"Bruno's goal was a moment of
magic from an unbelievable player, and he's been so consistent for
us for a long period of time, and he makes a difference more often
than not, so I'm delighted for him."
On Lewis Hall:
"He felt his hamstring against
Union, which was a real blow for us. We’ve been trying to manage him
back, as I said on Friday. Unfortunately, he just felt something in
that game.
"We’ve had it scanned, but
before we can get conclusive evidence of how long he’s going to be
out, we need another rescan in about ten days.
"So, it’s not going to be a
short-term injury, but we hope it’s not going to be a long-term
injury. We sort of don’t know yet."
On Jacob Ramsey:
"He’s good. He’s trained for two
days, I just made the decision that I didn’t want to risk him and
potentially set him back again.
"I want to give him the two
weeks of the international break to make sure he’s ready for the
next game.”
On Nick Woltemade:
"I thought today was a good
performance. He grew into the game. The penalty was very composed. A
really good penalty from someone playing with confidence.
"Nick spoke to me about taking
penalties. He is confident in that respect.
"It's a difficult moment for me
because I just want to see the net ripple. I just want to see him
score. I don't really care how it gets there.
"Obviously, there's better ways
than others and that was a spectacular one, really. As long as he
scores in those moments, that's all that matters."
On another clean sheet:
"It's crucial, and I think we've
started the season really well defensively, Arsenal game apart
really.
"We've been solid, resilient,
there's been a lot of effort given by all the players to protect
their goal, and Nick Pope's been playing well too.
"A good mix for us because you
are only a goal away from winning a game.
"The break has probably come at
a bad time for us with the momentum. We will take it and dust the
players down and regroup."
Nick Waltemade added:
"Big win. Second in win a row.
Really important and tough game to come in. Good energy and that was
the key point for today.
"Now we go into international
break with two wins - that was really important to come into with a
good position.
"We have good energy from the
bench. We have done really well.
"When you score as a striker on
the pitch the feeling is really good. The gaffer is such a good
gaffer."
Stats:
Bruno Guimaraes scored his second PL
goal of the season and now has 23 to his name in that
competition. The strike moved him one clear of Joelinton and Laurent
Robert and placed him level with Miggy Almiron and Kieron Dyer.
Nick Woltemade scored his third PL goal of the season and now
has four in all competitions for Newcastle. He's only the third
player to net in each of his first three PL home games for
the club, after Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer.
Sir Les went on to score in his first six PL appearances
at SJP while Wor Al managed a remarkable 15 game run.

Update:
Willie McFaul RIP

Former goalkeeper, coach and manager Willie McFaul sadly died
on Saturday,
just days after his 82nd birthday.
Willie, or Iam as he was also known, was a g oalkeeper
famously signed by United despite conceding seven
goals for Linfield in a friendly match at SJP in
September 1966.
Making his debut in a 0-2 home defeat by Liverpool
in November of the same year, Iam had become first
choice between the posts by the summer of 1968 and
played in all but one of the club's 59 games that
season.
He appeared in all twelve games of the club's
first European adventure, doing his bit to get United
into the final with a penalty save against Rangers at
Ibrox.
Future Fairs Cup campaigns in the following two
seasons saw Iam maintain his 100% appearance record,
scoring in the penalty shootout against Pecsi Dozsa in
1970/71, when the referee summoned United back from
the dressing room to complete the sequence of kicks -
despite the Hungarians having already won on
penalties.
Often featured on TV as the goalkeeper who concedes
two goals at Hereford in 1972, Willie played what was
to be his final game for the club at the end of the
1974/75 season, moving on to the SJP coaching staff.
Installed for the first time as caretaker manager
(briefly) in 1977, McFaul then took over again in 1985
following the abrupt departure of Jack Charlton and
was soon handed the job on a permanent basis.
Giving youth team startlet Paul Gascoigne his first
senior start, Iam (by now universally known as Willie)
kept the side together despite the departures of
messrs Waddle, Beardsley and later Gascoigne.
However, a spending spree ahead of the 1988/89 season
proved to be his downfall as new boys Dave Beasant,
Andy Thorn and John Hendrie failed to improve his side
and he was dismissed following a run of poor results.
McFaul returned to his native Northern Ireland and
worked as an Irish FA coach and with local sides
before accepting a FIFA -backed posting to become the
coach of Guam, an island in the South Pacific.
By 2004 Willie was back coaching in his homeland, as
well as scouting for Norwich City during Glenn
Roeder's time in Norfolk.
He returned to SJP in 2009 to take part in the 40th
anniversary celebrations of the Fairs Cup victory and confessed that he was
"delighted and a wee bit emotional" to be reunited with his colleagues and the
trophy.

More home discomforts

Newcastle's winless start to the PL2 season was extended to six
games on Sunday, as Tottenham Hotspur became the latest side to
leave Tyneside with maximum points.
United slipped to defeat at an almost deserted Whitley Park, thanks
to some contrary scheduling that saw the U21 game kicking off just
moments after United's Premier League meeting with Nottingham Forest
at SJP had ended.
Having scored five times at the mackems and six times at Leicester
in their opening two PL2 away games, Spurs were soon on the
offensive and Tynan Thompson shot against the goal frame within the
opening two minutes.
The visitors went ahead on 20 minutes when midfielder Lucas
Williams-Barnett drove past Max Thompson but the Magpies levelled
thanks to Cathal Heffernan's header from Alfie Harrison's free kick
six minutes before the break.
Sadly that's as good as it got for the black and whites and coach
Adam Lawrence as a talented Spurs side fully imposed themselves
after the restart.
Williams-Barnett grabbed his second of the game from distance in the
53rd minute, Rio Kyerematen struck the woodwork four minutes later
and Thompson emulated him on 66 minutes, finding the goal
frame for the second time.
The third goal duly arrived for Spurs with 14 minutes remaining,
when Dane Scarlett converted his free kick before Thompson finally
got his goal on 78 minutes.
Defeat saw Newcastle slip to second bottom of the 29 team table,
with only pointless Derby County below them.
The unavailability of attacking quartet Ben Parkinson, Sean Neave,
Jonny Emerson and Park Seung-soo saw Kacey Wooster handed his first
PL2 start and the 17 year-old twice came close to netting in the
opening exchanges.

Following a 0-2 home defeat by AFC Wimbledon that left Blackpool second bottom of League One on
Saturday, the Seasiders dismissed manager Steve Bruce.
Ex-Magpie coaches Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence also leave
Bloomfield Road with immediate effect.
PS: As Bruce departs, his immediate predecessor at SJP has a new
job, with Ben Dawson taking up a coaching position at Danish
side Brondby.
Out of football since leaving Leicester City in February, the 44
year-old is reunited with his former Foxes boss Steve Cooper at the
Superliga side.

Cup capitulation
Aston Villa U18s 7 Newcastle U18s 1
Newcastle's U18 side returned to
Premier League Cup action on Saturday, suffering a second half nightmare
against Aston Villa at their Bodymoor Heath training facility.
It was 1-1 at half-time when a Tom Old effort from close range equalised Markie Meade's fifth
minute opener for the hosts 20 minutes later.
It was still level with half an hour remaining, but after Jack
McGrath put Villa ahead, Teddie Bloomfield (70) got a third Meade (71) and McGrath (80) got their second goals.
Meade
then completed his hat-trick two minutes from the end before the scoring was completed in
the fourth minute of added time when Olly Lloyd got Villa's
seventh.
The home side featured Cole Ramsey, younger brother of current
Magpie Jacob.
Team: Dowell, Bloomer, Goodbrand (Durrant 59), Old, Moran,
M.Miley (Cogdon 59), Pinnington (Patterson 75), Ireoluwa, O'Donovan
(Lucas 75), Seldon, Hutchison.
Sub n/u: Mair.
With two games played, Newcastle sit third in Group B with three
points, three behind Villa and level with Leicester City. The
Magpies host bottom-placed Liverpool late next month in their third
and final game. The top two in each of the eight groups progress to
the quarter final stage.

Belgians prevail
USG U19s 2 Newcastle U19s 0

Newcastle U19s were left to rue a host of missed chances on
Wednesday, as they suffered their second successive defeat in
this season's UEFA U19 Youth League.
Although their traditional Joseph Marien Stadium
home wasn't chosen to host Champions League ties, the youth meeting
of the sides was staged there, with a mixture of supporters and
officials in the 100 year-old stand.
To the delight of home fans and parents, Union took the lead in just
the sixth minute when Youssef Hamoutahar evaded Scott Bailey on the left,
made his way into the
box and fired beyond goalkeeper George Mair.
After a slow start, United began to dominate and fashion a trio of
presentable opportunities; Sean Neave lobbing Girogi Kavlashvili
only for a defender to intervene, Mo Waddani losing his one on one
with the goalkeeper and Leo Shahar's free kick from a dangerous
position blocked.
SG extended their advantage in the third minute of added
time when Sekou Keita bundled in a corner at the back amid protests
from the visitors - it's unclear whether they were claiming a foul
or handball but Macedonian referee Jovan Kachevski was unmoved -
having earlier booked Sam Alabi for querying the lack of free kick
for a clear foul on him.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with
the young Magpies enjoying the lion's share of possession but still
unable to fashion many clear chances.
The closest they came was when Neave struck the upright in the 71st
minute with the goalkeeper rooted to the spot; substitute Park
Seung-soo busy down the left without providing a killer pass or
cross.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log
on and complete your purchase regardless.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered
to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.
Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are
gone.
2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.
2025/26 CL away tickets are €50 or less.

On This Day in History |
|
5th October |
|
Born Or Died:
1887 Nils Middleboe born, Brøndby, Denmark.
(1913)

Midfielder who faced United during their post-season tour to
Copenhagen in May 1913, impressing sufficiently to be signed on amateur terms
by the Magpies.
Nils had represented Denmark at football in both the 1908 and 1912 Olympics and
was part of the KB (Kjøbenhavns Boldklub) side who won the Championship in
1913.
However Middleboe was allowed to move on to Chelsea that October and it's
unclear whether he ever actually came to Tyneside.
Remaining at Stamford Bridge until 1922 but retaining amateur status, he
combined playing with a banking career in London.
Continuing his playing career with Corinthians FC and Casuals FC (who later
merged), Nils also served as a Director of Clapton Orient.
Returning to Copenhagen he took charge of KB and guided them to the title in
1940.
Nils passed away in September 1976.
1925 Ron Batty born, Lanchester.
(1945-58)

Full back who joined the Magpies from Stanley United shortly
after the end of WW2, having previously trained as an electrician in the Durham
coalfield.
Appeared in wartime football, Batty turned professional
(earning a £10 signing on fee) and made his competitive senior bow in 0-1 loss
at Portsmouth in October 1948, just days before his 23rd birthday.
Dropping out of the side in January 1950 at the expense of Alf McMichael, Ron
played on for the reserves. failed to make the 1951 & 1952 FA Cup Final
conquests - although featuring in the 1952 Charity Shield loss to Manchester
United.
Winning his place back during the 1953/54 campaign, Batty played in all ten FA
Cup ties of Newcastle's successful 1955 run - including a 3-1 win over
Manchester City in the final at Wembley.
Scoring the only goal of his career in a 1-2 loss at Leicester City in November
1957, his 181st and final outing came in a 6-1 FA Cup away victory over Plymouth
Argyle in 1958.
Later playing for and managing Gateshead, Ron died suddenly at
home during July 1971.

1958 Peter Johnson born, Harrogate.
(1980-83)

Left back who promised great things when signed from the
smoggies for £50,000.
However, Peter's eye-catching debut at home to Watford in November 1980 proved
to be a false dawn and he failed to match that form in the nineteen other
appearances during that season.
Loaned out to Bristol City in September 1982, a permanent switch to Doncaster
Rovers was then concluded the following March.
Failing to settle at Belle Vue, Johnson was more successful at Darlington,
later joining Whitby Town, Crewe Alexandra, Exeter City, Gillingham and Southend United.
He returned to haunt Newcastle during 1991, as part of the Peterborough United
side that beat us 1-0 in the League Cup.
Ending his playing career at Wycombe Wanderers, Peter later coached youngsters
at both Southend and Leyton Orient.

1972 Alain Goma born, Sault, France.
(1999-2001)

Former Auxerre defender signed for £4.7m from Paris SG during
Ruud Gullit's reign, debuting in a 0-1 season-opening home defeat by Aston
Villa.
Goma was bought to partner Marcelino in a new-look centre half pairing - but
the two failed to record a win in the six starts they made together over two
seasons.
Injury problems plagued Alain but he finally seemed to have got over them and
won over the fans with a man of the match display at Leicester City in November
2000.
However, he then accused United of lacking ambition and motivation before
deciding life would be easier in London.
An incandescent Bobby Robson sold him to Fulham in March 2001 at a cost of £4m
and replaced him with Andy O'Brien from Bradford City for half that amount.
Goma went on to play over 150 games for the Cottagers but
failed to score for them - his only goal in England a thundering header in
Newcastle's 3-1 win at Middlesbrough in October 2000.
Released by Fulham in the summer of 2006, Goma joined Al-Wakra
in Qatar before hanging up his boots.
Alain then became a property developer in South West London.

1990 James Taylor born, Ashington.
(2006-10)

Academy defender/midfielder who was handed his reserve team
debut in a 4-1 Northumberland Senior Cup victory at Prudhoe Town in October
2008.
Released by United at tail the end of the 2009/10 season, James linked up with
Ashington ahead of the following campaign - also briefly turning out for
Whitley Bay - before signing for the Colliers.
2013 saw James make a memorable return to SJP, appearing for Ashington as
they defeated Whitley Bay 3-0 to lift the Northumberland Senior Cup.
Working as a community coach for United after his time as a player ended,
Taylor subsequently became a mathematics teacher based in his home town.
1994 Will Turton born, Stockton.
(2011-12)

Joining United aged 11, Will marked his U18 debut with a goal
against his boyhood favourites Boro, netting during a 3-1 win at Hurworth in
February 2011.
Settling on defence after periods playing in both midfield and up front,
Turton's reserve bow came in a pre-season friendly at Berwick Rangers in July
of that year.
Released by United, Will had a brief stint with the smoggies at the end of the
2011/12 season but wasn't retained.

For the second
successive Monday, the Magpies were in floodlit friendly
action across the border.
Sharing six goals with Aberdeen a week earlier, their
afternoon visit to Tannadice saw the goals flow again -
but mostly for Newcastle.
Len White helped himself to a hat-trick and laid on
another four assists. Malcolm Scott's purple patch in
front of goal continued, scoring for the seventh and
eighth times in just four games.
PS: The Magpies travelled by aeroplane to this
game, landing at RAF Leuchars. Fifty years later, they
were again at Tannadice for a kickabout but this time had
to endure the journey by bus....

A bad day for Willie McFaul's side, deservedly
trailing at half time and losing both Peter Beardsley and
David McCreery through injury. George Reilly's sixth goal
of the season was of little comfort.

The Gods conspired against
Newcastle on a day when simply nothing went right at
Fratton Park and they ended up bottom of the table.
Driving rain drenched the
away support on an uncovered terrace and saturated the
pitch as Alan Neilson's slide tackle on Darren Anderton
led to a
penalty that future Magpie John Beresford converted.
Referee Lester Shapter then dismissed Darren Bradshaw
for pulling back Colin Clarke, before Clarke's cross was
diverted into his own net by
Mark Stimson.
Visiting forward Mick Quinn thought he'd halved the
deficit early in the second half, only for his
close-range effort to be ruled out by an offside flag.
After the hosts scored again, Pompey old boy Quinn
legitimately netted but the wet pitch saw him slide into
the goal frame.
He limped off leaving United with nine men, both away substitutes having been used - one just seconds
earlier.
There was no further
scoring, a promotion chasing Portsmouth side managed by former Magpies boss Jim
Smith taking pity on their luckless visitors.

Two minor classics from the Shearer canon won it: a fierce drive from a free kick in the Baggies box
and then sweeping the ball home after Gary Speed's centre
was headed back across goal by Nobby Solano.

2005 Newcastle's
second string broke new ground with a maiden appearance at
the Robin Park home of Wigan Athletic reserves.
Trailing at the break, United scraped a point four minutes
after the restart when Shola Ameobi was fouled in the area
and Michael Chopra slotted in the penalty.
Tommy Craig's side ended
the game with ten men after Darryl Smylie picked up his
second booking a minute from time.

Steven Taylor inspired an unlikely comeback at
Goodison by scoring one and making the other as United
came from two goals down to halt a run of four league
losses.
And
Joe Kinnear must take some credit for another C-word
half-time rant that inspired his beleaguered troops. But
this time the C-word was confidence.

2009 The Times
reported that would-be new owner, Barry Moat, had finally
made a substantial formal offer for the club and that it
was being considered by Mike Ashley & Co.
Ashley now had to decide whether to cut his losses or hold
out in the hope that an instant top-flight return would
effectively double the paper value. He gambled on the
latter.
2010 Newcastle Reserves drew 0-0 in a league game
with Aston Villa at Darsley Park, Danny Simpson and Danny
Guthrie both making successful comebacks from injury.
Also gracing us with their presence were Alan Smith and
Xisco - the former in midfield and the latter nowhere in
particular...

Papiss Cisse was twice denied and a blatant handball in
the box wasn't seen by referee Kevin Friend.
Peter Odemwingie's first City goal led to some nervy
moments late on but anything other than three points would
have been a travesty.

this their ninth successive reverse in the competition.
