Update:
Willie McFaul RIP

Former goalkeeper, coach and manager Willie McFaul sadly died
on Saturday,
just days after his 82nd birthday.
Willie, or Iam as he was also known, was a g oalkeeper
famously signed by United despite conceding seven
goals for Linfield in a friendly match at SJP in
September 1966.
Making his debut in a 0-2 home defeat by Liverpool
in November of the same year, Iam had become first
choice between the posts by the summer of 1968 and
played in all but one of the club's 59 games that
season.
He appeared in all twelve games of the club's
first European adventure, doing his bit to get United
into the final with a penalty save against Rangers at
Ibrox.
Future Fairs Cup campaigns in the following two
seasons saw Iam maintain his 100% appearance record,
scoring in the penalty shootout against Pecsi Dozsa in
1970/71, when the referee summoned United back from
the dressing room to complete the sequence of kicks -
despite the Hungarians having already won on
penalties.
Often featured on TV as the goalkeeper who concedes
two goals at Hereford in 1972, Willie played what was
to be his final game for the club at the end of the
1974/75 season, moving on to the SJP coaching staff.
Installed for the first time as caretaker manager
(briefly) in 1977, McFaul then took over again in 1985
following the abrupt departure of Jack Charlton and
was soon handed the job on a permanent basis.
Giving youth team startlet Paul Gascoigne his first
senior start, Iam (by now universally known as Willie)
kept the side together despite the departures of
messrs Waddle, Beardsley and later Gascoigne.
However, a spending spree ahead of the 1988/89 season
proved to be his downfall as new boys Dave Beasant,
Andy Thorn and John Hendrie failed to improve his side
and he was dismissed following a run of poor results.
McFaul returned to his native Northern Ireland and
worked as an Irish FA coach and with local sides
before accepting a FIFA -backed posting to become the
coach of Guam, an island in the South Pacific.
By 2004 Willie was back coaching in his homeland, as
well as scouting for Norwich City during Glenn
Roeder's time in Norfolk.
He returned to SJP in 2009 to take part in the 40th
anniversary celebrations of the Fairs Cup victory and confessed that he was
"delighted and a wee bit emotional" to be reunited with his colleagues and the
trophy.

More home discomforts
Newcastle U21s 1 Spurs U21s

Newcastle's winless start to the PL2 season was extended to six
games on Sunday, as Tottenham Hotspur became the latest side to
leave Tyneside with maximum points.
United slipped to defeat at an almost deserted Whitley Park, thanks
to some contrary scheduling that saw the U21 game kicking off just
moments after United's Premier League meeting with Nottingham Forest
at SJP had ended.
Having scored five times at the mackems and six times at Leicester
in their opening two PL2 away games, Spurs were soon on the
offensive and Tynan Thompson shot against the goal frame within the
opening two minutes.
The visitors went ahead on 20 minutes when midfielder Lucas
Williams-Barnett drove past Max Thompson but the Magpies levelled
thanks to Cathal Heffernan's header from Alfie Harrison's free kick
six minutes before the break.
Sadly that's as good as it got for the black and whites and coach
Adam Lawrence as a talented Spurs side fully imposed themselves
after the restart.
Williams-Barnett grabbed his second of the game from distance in the
53rd minute, Rio Kyerematen struck the woodwork four minutes later
and Thompson emulated him on 66 minutes, finding the goal
frame for the second time.
The third goal duly arrived for Spurs with 14 minutes remaining,
when Dane Scarlett converted his free kick before Thompson finally
got his goal on 78 minutes.
Defeat saw Newcastle slip to second bottom of the 29 team table,
with only pointless Derby County below them.
The unavailability of attacking quartet Ben Parkinson, Sean Neave,
Jonny Emerson and Park Seung-soo saw Kacey Wooster handed his first
PL2 start and the 17 year-old twice came close to netting in the
opening exchanges.
Team: M.Thompson, Shahar, A.Murphy, McArthur, Heffernan,
Bailey, Harrison, Finneran (Harper 61), Wooster (Brayson 78), Munda,
Charlton (Waddani 71).

Not led by Donkeys
Following a 0-2 home defeat by AFC Wimbledon that left Blackpool second bottom of League One on
Saturday, the Seasiders dismissed manager Steve Bruce.
Ex-Magpie coaches Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence also leave
Bloomfield Road with immediate effect.
Also newly back on the job market are Mike Williamson who has left
his coaching role at Rangers and Neil McDonald, no longer on the
staff at Hartlepool United.
The latter's departure was followed by the arrival of former
Newcastle U21 coach Elliot Dickman at 'Pools.
Bruce's immediate predecessor at SJP also has a new job, Ben Dawson taking up a coaching position at Danish
side Brondby.
Out of football since leaving Leicester City in February, the 44
year-old is reunited with his former Foxes boss Steve Cooper at the
Superliga side.

Cup capitulation
Aston Villa U18s 7 Newcastle U18s 1
Newcastle's U18 side returned to
Premier League Cup action on Saturday, suffering a second half nightmare
against Aston Villa at their Bodymoor Heath training facility.
It was 1-1 at half-time when a Tom Old effort from close range equalised Markie Meade's fifth
minute opener for the hosts 20 minutes later.
It was still level with half an hour remaining, but after Jack
McGrath put Villa ahead, Teddie Bloomfield (70) got a third Meade (71) and McGrath (80) got their second goals.
Meade
then completed his hat-trick two minutes from the end before the scoring was completed in
the fourth minute of added time when Olly Lloyd got Villa's
seventh.
The home side featured Cole Ramsey, younger brother of current
Magpie Jacob.
Team: Dowell, Bloomer, Goodbrand (Durrant 59), Old, Moran,
M.Miley (Cogdon 59), Pinnington (Patterson 75), Ireoluwa, O'Donovan
(Lucas 75), Seldon, Hutchison.
Sub n/u: Mair.
With two games played, Newcastle sit third in Group B with three
points, three behind Villa and level with Leicester City. The
Magpies host bottom-placed Liverpool late next month in their third
and final game. The top two in each of the eight groups progress to
the quarter final stage.

Out now from Pitch
Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill
McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons,

worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.
Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in
managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to

The Magpies are winless against the Seagulls in the most recent five

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log
on and complete your purchase regardless.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered
to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Born Or Died:
1919 Albert Sibley born, West Thurrock, Essex. (1947-50)

Known as Joe, this right winger had starred
for Southend United before WW2, during which he served in the RAF at Ruislip.
Guesting for Fulham, Spurs, Aldershot, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Millwall &
QPR in wartime football, Sibley joined United in a part-exchange deal in
February 1947 (The Shrimpers took Ernie Brown & £6,500).
Debuting in a 1-3 home defeat by Southampton that month, Joe helped United win
promotion back to Division One in the following season but was then only an
occasional starter in Division One.
Re-signing for Southend in 1950, Joe moved on to Folkestone Town six years
later and lived in the Essex town of Southchurch. His death was announced in
February 2008.

1932 Alan Herron born, Ashington.
(1948-50)

Centre half who was at SJP on amateur terms and captained the N's junior side but failed to win a contract and
moved on to Blackburn Rovers in 1950.
A reserve team regular at Ewood Park, it took Alan another five years to make the first of his four league
appearances for them.
He joined Wigan Athletic during 1957.
1935 John Henry Taylor born, Crawcrook
(1952-60)

Right winger Harry made the first of seven senior appearances on New Years
Day 1955 in a 2-6 loss at Sheffield United.
Sent on loan to Fulham two seasons later, Taylor returned to SJP and played
22 more games before losing his place following a 1-2 home to loss to Preston
North End in September 1959.
Moving to Chelmsford City a year later, Taylor later joined Cambridge United
before returning to the North East, where he worked for Newcastle Breweries.
His death was announced in January 2017, at the age of 81.
1981 Zurab Khizanishvili born, Tbilisi, Georgia. (2009)
Centre half who joined United in
September 2009 on a three month loan from Blackburn Rovers, debuting in a 4-0
win at Ipswich Town in the Championship.
Zurab was the second Georgian to have featured for the club, following Temuri
Ketsbaia - who played alongside him both internationally and for Dundee.
Dens Park was Zurab's first taste of British football, moving there from
Lokomotiv Tblisi in 2001, having previously played for both Dinamo and
Norchi in the same city.
Joining Glasgow Rangers in 2003, Zurab first faced Newcastle when he played in
the same side as Peter Lovenkrands at SJP in a pre-season friendly in July
2004.
A move to Blackburn (initially on loan) followed in August 2005, making his
home debut in a 0-3 loss to Newcastle.
Appearing for Rovers in their 1-0 win at SJP the following January, Zurab
returned to Tyneside in March 2008 to repeat the feat.
Zurab's time in Toon wasn't a great success and of his seven appearances,
United drew two and lost three.
That included a that dreadful night at Scunthorpe when Khizanishvili looked
ineffectual against moderate opposition.
Dismissed in the dying seconds of his penultimate Newcastle game, at home to
Doncaster Rovers, Zurab headed back to Rovers but after just one game was
loaned out again, this time to Reading.
However a knee injury curtailed his pitch time for the Royals and he missed
United's 2-0 win in Berkshire that April
Entering the final season of his contract with Blackburn in August 2010, Zurab
found himself omitted from the team photograph and joined Turkish club
Kayserispor.
September 2013 then saw him announce his retirement from international football
in order to focus on his club career, signing for yet another club in his home
town - this time Dinamo Tbilisi - in Summer 2014. After just
four appearances for Tbilisi he moved to Georgian side Samtredia before
joining Azerbaijan Premier League side Inter Baku in June 2015.
He hung up his boots in 2017 and was appointed as the assistant manager of the Georgian national U21 side, moving on to a similar post with the seniors in 2020.
Zurab has the longest surname to feature on a Toon shirt, at 13
letters; a total equalled by Keith Kettleborough, albeit playing in the nameless, 1 to 11 days
for shirts.

1998
Lloyd Kelly born, Bristol. (2024-25)

Newcastle's
first senior signing of the summer 2024 transfer window was this defender, a
free agent following the expiration of his Bournemouth contract.
Kelly signed a five-year deal and was reunited on Tyneside with former
Cherries managers Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall plus coach Graeme Jones.
Lloyd played the first of 48 games for his hometown Bristol City in 2017,
making a £13m switch to Bournemouth ahead of the 2019/20 campaign - and a home
debut during Newcastle's 4-1 win there.
Previously playing for England at U20 and U21 level, his first outing for
the Magpies came in a 0-2 friendly loss to Yokohama F.
Marinos in Toyko during August 2024.
Kelly's competitive
Newcastle debut came later that month from the bench in the season-opening
Premier League home victory over Southampton.
Initially featuring at right back, Lloyd soon became a
regular bench selection after failing to disrupt regular
centre back pair Fabian Schar and Dan Burn.
A succession of low-impact sub outings followed, the
last of which was in the final few minutes of a 1-2 home
loss to Fulham on the first day of February 2025.
Within a week he was debuting for Serie A side Juventus
away at Como, following an unexpected loan switch
to the Italians with a £20m purchase option.
Clearly reluctant to lose him, Eddie Howe paid tribute
to Kelly and referenced the PSR requirement
that his departure had satisfied.

It wasn't a roaring success and he played only once more game
for the first team, in a Texaco Cup match. Three days
later Arsenal would put another four past us in the
league.
1971 At SJP meanwhile, Newcastle juniors beat Middlesbrough 3-2 to clinch
the previous season's Northern Intermediate title.
United led at the 2-0 interval after goals by Heslop and Hodgson,
Stewart Barrowclough hitting the goal frame with a penalty kick in between those goals.
Heslop then increased Newcastle's lead before a late Boro rally saw them net

The visitors romped into a two-goal lead

penalty by referee Anthony Taylor when Jonjo Shelvey's
free-kick was blatantly handled by Ashley Young.

Juan Mata hit a free-kick over the wall, Anthony
Martial beat Martin Dubravka and substitute Alexis
