Internationals:
It's lift off, United

Following news that Nick Woltemade's Germany call-up was delayed after a dose of flu, another two Magpies encountered problems linking up with their national side.

Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton were named in the Brazil squad for kickabouts in South Korea and Japan, but were delayed when a technical problem resulted in their flight from Amsterdam to Seoul on Tuesday turning back.

The duo were then reported to be boarding alternative flights to reach Seoul via two different routes, reducing their preparation time for Friday's game.

Woltemade meanwhile was cleared to travel after his symptoms eased and is expected to join the German squad at their Herzogenaurach base on Tuesday night.

Anthony Gordon and Dan Burn did link up with England, but injury meant Thomas Tuchel couldn't call on Tino Livramento. Fitness concerns saw Lewis Hall withdraw from the U21s, leaving Lewis Miley as Newcastle's only representative at that level for the Three Lions.

Sandro Tonali made it to Italy's training centre near Florence unscathed, while Anthony Elanga was put up for interview by Sweden on Tuesday, responding to questions about his club form by saying:

"It's a marathon, not a sprint. It's just about staying focused. I know how good I am and how good I can be. When I get the chance, I have to take it. When a goal comes in, it will click.

"It's a new system, new players and they'll get comfortable with me and I with them.

(Eddie Howe is) a fantastic coach who I'm learning a lot from. For me, he is the best coach I have ever had. He helps me a lot on and off the field. I feel like I am getting better - that is the most important thing.

"I've played ten games, I think I've started six. We'll have 60 games this year and the coach is smart and knows what he's doing.

"The way we play takes a lot of strain on the body. It requires intensity. He tries to keep everyone fresh and ready. We've won games, that's the most important thing."

PS: Emil Krafth (Sweden) and William Osula (Denmark) were both omitted from selection, while the form of Nick Pope (England), Sven Botman (Netherlands) or Malick Thiaw (Germany) failed to trigger any call-ups.

Yoane Wissa's unavailability meanwhile means he misses DR Congo's final two World Cup qualifiers in the coming days, against Togo and Sudan.

Trailing group leaders Senegal by two points with only one side qualifying automatically, DR Congo look increasingly likely to drop into November's playoff four team CAF playoffs - with success in that seeing them advance to an Inter Confederation playoff staged next March.

All that is over and above DR Congo's position as one of 24 teams participating in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals between December 21st and January 18th in Morocco.

Compo:
Scarf ace

Following the success of matching bucket and bobble hats, a Lee scarf has been added to the range of products on offer from Tyneside's own Football Bobbles.

Inspired by United's distinctive 1997/98 season change kit and echoing the current change ensemble, these are available online
here now.

(Anyone purchasing Lee scarves can take advantage of price reductions on Ferdinand scarves and Tino bobble hats - see link above for further details).

We have a Lee scarf up for grabs in a free-to-enter competition and to stand a chance of winning it, simply require you to answer the following question:

United announced their return to European competition in spectacular style in 1994, with Rob Lee netting a hat-trick against Royal Antwerp in a 5-0 away win. What did all three of Lee's goals that night have in common?

Email that to [email protected] with subject Scarf.

Closing date is 11am on Tuesday October 14th. No age limit, open to anyone on the planet. Delivery only to UK addresses. One entry each please
per person.

U21s:
Boston United (a)

Next up for Newcastle' second string is a National League Cup tie against Boston United at their Jakeman's Stadium.

It's a 7pm kick-off this Wednesday night and tickets are on sale now here priced £10 adults, £5 concessions and £1 U16s. Only the main stand will be open, with pay turnstiles available (card only, no cash).

This tie will be live streamed via Youtube online here

If ties are drawn after 90 minutes each team gets a point and a penalty shootout takes place for an extra point.

While the Magpies have three points thanks to a 4-3 victory at Gateshead in their only National League outing to date, The Pilgrims have won all three ties in this competition and would confirm their qualification with a fourth success.

Newcastle are in Group D of the 32 team competition and visits Scunthorpe United and Halifax Town in December.

Leeds United, Boro and the mackems make up our group, but along with ourselves only come up against the four National League teams, not each other.

This is the second time that the Magpies have played at this venue, losing 2-3 there in the same competition last season.

U21s:
Mansfield Town (a)

Wednesday week (15th October) sees Newcastle U21s return to action in the second of their three EFL Trophy Northern Group F stages ties.

Their opponents at the One Call Stadium in a 7.45pm kick-off are a Mansfield Town side managed by Nigel Clough who lost their opening tie 0-1 to Harrogate Town.

Newcastle are also currently pointless following a 2-6 defeat at Huddersfield Town.

Tickets are now on sale here priced £10 adults and £5 concessions. Free registration is required to purchase, with away fans housed in a section of the North Stand.

If ties are drawn after 90 minutes each team gets a point and a penalty shootout takes place for an extra point.

This will be United's third visit to what was formerly known as Field Mill in this competition, the Stags running out 6-3 winners in 2021 and registering a 3-0 success in 2024.

Update:
Willie McFaul RIP

Former goalkeeper, coach and manager Willie McFaul sadly died on Saturday, just days after his 82nd birthday.

Willie, or Iam as he was also known, was a g
oalkeeper famously signed by United despite conceding seven goals for Linfield in a friendly match at SJP in September 1966.

Making his debut in a 0-2 home defeat by Liverpool in November of the same year, Iam had become first choice between the posts by the summer of 1968 and played in all but one of the club's 59 games that season.

He appeared in all twelve games of the club's first European adventure, doing his bit to get United into the final with a penalty save against Rangers at Ibrox.

Future Fairs Cup campaigns in the following two seasons saw Iam maintain his 100% appearance record, scoring in the penalty shootout against Pecsi Dozsa in 1970/71, when the referee summoned United back from the dressing room to complete the sequence of kicks - despite the Hungarians having already won on penalties.

Often featured on TV as the goalkeeper who concedes two goals at Hereford in 1972, Willie played what was to be his final game for the club at the end of the 1974/75 season, moving on to the SJP coaching staff.

Installed for the first time as caretaker manager (briefly) in 1977, McFaul then took over again in 1985 following the abrupt departure of Jack Charlton and was soon handed the job on a permanent basis.

Giving youth team startlet Paul Gascoigne his first senior start, Iam (by now universally known as Willie) kept the side together despite the departures of messrs Waddle, Beardsley and later Gascoigne.

However, a spending spree ahead of the 1988/89 season proved to be his downfall as new boys Dave Beasant, Andy Thorn and John Hendrie failed to improve his side and he was dismissed following a run of poor results.

McFaul returned to his native Northern Ireland and worked as an Irish FA coach and with local sides before accepting a FIFA -backed posting to become the coach of Guam, an island in the South Pacific.

By 2004 Willie was back coaching in his homeland, as well as scouting for Norwich City during Glenn Roeder's time in Norfolk.

He returned to SJP in 2009 to take part in the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Fairs Cup victory and confessed that he was "delighted and a wee bit emotional" to be reunited with his colleagues and the trophy.

Match report

Old boys:
Not led by Donkeys

Following a 0-2 home defeat by AFC Wimbledon that left Blackpool second bottom of League One on Saturday, the Seasiders dismissed manager Steve Bruce.

Ex-Magpie coaches Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence also leave Bloomfield Road with immediate effect.

Also newly back on the job market are Mike Williamson who has left his coaching role at Rangers and Neil McDonald, no longer on the staff at Hartlepool United.

The latter's departure was followed by the arrival of former Newcastle U21 coach Elliot Dickman at 'Pools.

Bruce's immediate predecessor at SJP also has a new job, Ben Dawson taking up a coaching position at Danish side Brondby.

Out of football since leaving Leicester City in February, the 44 year-old is reunited with his former Foxes boss Steve Cooper at the Superliga side.

U18s:
Cup capitulation

Aston Villa U18s  7  Newcastle U18s  1

Newcastle's U18 side returned to Premier League Cup action on Saturday, suffering a second half nightmare against Aston Villa at their Bodymoor Heath training facility.

It was 1-1 at half-time when a Tom Old effort from close range equalised Markie Meade's fifth minute opener for the hosts 20 minutes later.

It was still level with half an hour remaining, but after Jack McGrath put Villa ahead, Teddie Bloomfield (70) got a third Meade (71) and McGrath (80) got their second goals.

Meade then completed his hat-trick two minutes from the end before the scoring was completed in the fourth minute of added time when Olly Lloyd got Villa's seventh.

The home side featured Cole Ramsey, younger brother of current Magpie Jacob.

Team: Dowell, Bloomer, Goodbrand (Durrant 59), Old, Moran, M.Miley (Cogdon 59), Pinnington (Patterson 75), Ireoluwa, O'Donovan (Lucas 75), Seldon, Hutchison.
Sub n/u: Mair.

With two games played, Newcastle sit third in Group B with three points, three behind Villa and level with Leicester City.

The Magpies host bottom-placed Liverpool late next month in their third and final game. The top two in each of the eight groups progress to the quarter final stage.

Book:
Belfast boy

Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons, winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.

Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

Brighton (a)

United are back in Premier League action on Saturday week, October 18th when they head to the Amex Stadium - a venue that they've never won at in the top flight.

Eight previous Premier League visits have ended in five draws and three home wins.

The Magpies are winless against the Seagulls in the most recent five league and cup meetings at home and away.

It's an old-fashioned 3pm start with no live UK TV.

BHAFC:
Solly March, Adam Webster and Jack Hinshelwood remain out but Joel Veltman and Kaoru Mitoma both should return to the squad following injury.

Matt O'Riley is on loan at Marseille while Igor Julio has made a temporary switch to West Ham.

Fabian Hurzeler's side are unbeaten on home turf so far this season, drawing with Fulham (1-1) and Spurs (2-2) and defeating Manchester City (2-1). Adding in last season, Albion haven't lost at the Amex in seven PL outings.

Ex-Magpie James Milner made his 643rd Premier League appearance in Brighton's last PL fixture at Wolves. That leaves the 39 year-old ten behind record holder Gareth Barry, who played in 653 PL matches.

As a measure of his longevity, Milner played his very first PL game in the colours of Leeds United in November 2002, two days before current Magpie Tino Livramento was born.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

On This Day in History
7th October

Born Or Died:

1881 James Tildesley born, Halesowen.
(1903-06)

Full back signed from Halesowen St. John who played the bulk of his games at SJP when deputising for Jack Carr and Bill McCracken.

Moving on to Middlesbrough in September 1906 and Leeds City three years later, Jimmy ended his career at Luton Town.

He later returned to SJP in a scouting capacity and was living on Tyneside at the time of his death in January 1963.

1912 Billy Cairns born, Newcastle.
(1933-34)

United's first wearer of the number nine shirt was signed from local league football in May 1933 for the princely sum of £25.

Debuting in a 5-1 home win over Bury on New Years Day 1935, Billy announced his arrival with a hat trick against Swansea Town at Gallowgate two months later.

The 1936/37 season proved to be his most profitable for United, netting 20 goals as the team finished fourth in Division Two, six points off a promotion place.

Scoring the final Newcastle goal of the abortive 1939/40 season that was then wiped from the records, Billy appeared in wartime football both for United and also Chester, Liverpool, Mansfield Town, Nottingham Forest, Chesterfield, Notts County and the mackems.

Signing for Gateshead on a free transfer in November 1944, Cairns moved on to Grimsby Town two years later, averaging a goal every other game in 231 appearances and playing on past his 40th birthday.

Moving on to the backroom staff at Blundell Park, Billy later became a publican in Cleethorpes. He died in January 1988.

1913 John Park born, Douglas Water, Scotland. (1936-41)

Right winger signed from Hamilton Academical for £1,800 in 1936, debuting in a 3-0 win at Bradford Park Avenue that September.

Lodging on Salters Road in Gosforth with team mates Jack Shiel and Jimmy Denmark, John's SJP career was curtailed by the outbreak of WW2.

Park guested in wartime football for Chester, Hartlepools, Wrexham, Hamilton Academical (Scotland), Stranraer (Scotland), Third Lanark (Scotland), Albion Rovers (Scotland) and Queen of the South (Scotland).

Employed at a steelworks near Motherwell, John's death was recorded in Glasgow during January 2002.

1945 George Smith born, Newcastle.
(1963-65)

Midfielder who failed to make the grade at SJP after spending 18 months out injured during his two years as a professional.

Moving on to Barrow, he helped them to promotion from the Fourth Division in the 1966/67 season, but was then unwillingly transferred to Portsmouth.

Later spells at Middlesbrough, Birmingham City, Cardiff City, Swansea City and Hartlepool United followed before his retirement at the age of 34.

Joining the coaching staff at Pools, Smith accepted an invitation from his former St. Andrews team mate Trevor Francis to scout for QPR during his time as manager.

Later scouting in the North East for Stoke City, George ran his own youth academy on Teesside, with hatchet man Lee Cattermole one of his former players.

1947 Pat Howard born, Dodworth, Yorkshire.(1971-76)

Solid central defender who was brought from Barnsley to United and played in the 1974 FA Cup and 1976 League Cup Final defeats.

He's remembered for his non-playing part in 1974 Cup run, his dismissal against Nottingham Forest prompted the now-infamous pitch invasion at SJP.

Howard followed Malcolm MacDonald to Arsenal early in the 1976/77 season and played against his old club twice as Mac scored the goals that gave the Gunners victory twice.

Next came a move to Birmingham City which ended with a loan spell out in the USA with Portland Timbers (USA).

Howard then returned to the UK and played for Bury, being part of the Shakers side that knocked Newcastle out of the League Cup in 1980/81.

He then coached for the Football in the Community scheme in the Lancashire area, also working in football projects for Salford Council and coaching at the local college.

Appearing for the Old Grammarians veterans football team, Paddy made a return to SJP in December 2004, appearing as half time hero on the field at the Arsenal game.

1990 Daniel Leadbitter born, Newcastle. (2007-11)

Defender who joined the club aged eight and appeared at Academy and Reserve level, although injuries hampered his progress at SJP.

Released in 2011, Dan initially went on trial to Lincoln City before agreeing a two year deal with League Two Torquay United.

However, fitness problems dogged Dan at Plainmoor and after just two substitute outings, he moved on to Conference side Hereford in June 2013.

Financial problems saw him leave Edgar Street a year later, signing for Bristol Rovers after a trial period at Southend United.

The Pirates gained promotion back to the Football League via the playoffs in his first season, but he wasn't involved in the final weeks or a dramatic penalty shootout success at Wembley.

A regular starter following their return to League Two, Leadbitter helped Rovers to gain automatic promotion in 2016 and signed a new two year contract.

2019 saw him sign for Newport County but he only appeared six times before a loan move to Yeovil Town in September 2020.

Returning to Newport in January 2021, Leadbitter then completed a temporary switch to non-league Gloucester City that was made permanent that July.

Still based in Bristol, Dan became a Personal Development Manager at the PFA (Professional Footballers Association).

Tommy Thompson had left Gallowgate just two months earlier and was in the mood to impress against his former employers, playing a part in the first two goals then hitting a fine third.

The County Durham native was then forced off through injury to a fine ovation, travelling back to the North East with the Magpies squad.

Bobby Shinton and Billy Rafferty put the visitors two up by half time, but Gordon Coleman and ex-Magpie Alex Bruce looked to have earned Preston a point before Rafferty's shot was unwittingly diverted past 'keeper Roy Tunks by Shinton.

1996 Manchester United launched  "Red Tribe" lager, a laughable press release revealing it was aimed at 18-45 year old males and females with an interest in football...and lager.

Further startling facts included the fact that over 2 million UK residents called themselves Manchester United supporters, and that 16% "were based in Manchester". That many?

2000 Chilean international midfielder Clarence Acuña became a Magpie for a fee of around £1m from Universidad de Chile.

2002 A goalless encounter at The Hawthorns as the Reserves were held by West Bromwich Abion.

The highlight of the evening was the news that Monkey's Heed, Peter Reid, had been sacked by the mackems.

The Red Devils avenged their three nil defeat on Tyneside some ten months earlier, as Newcastle lost at home for the first time that season.

Visiting defenders Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra both evaded their alleged markers at corners to beat Steve Harper early on.

The home side's response saw Demba Ba strike the crossbar and Papiss Cisse head the rebound goalwards - 'keeper David De Gea clawing the ball away just before it wholly crossed the line.

The sucker punch came when Tom Cleverley's over-hit cross from the left looped over Harper and into the corner of the Gallowgate net.

2013 United reserves drew 1-1 with Bolton Wanderers at Whitley Park, Adam Campbell on target to level for the home side.

Gabriel Obertan had a great chance to win it when Campbell robbed the 'keeper, but blazed his effort high over the unguarded goal.

2021 Amid feverish speculation, the club and Premier League issued statements around 5.15pm stating that the takeover of Newcastle United by a consortium of Saudi Arabia (PIF), Amanda Staveley (PCP Capital Partners) and the Reuben Brothers (RB Sports & Media) had been ratified.

An estimated 5,000 fans gathered outside the South West Corner of SJP to celebrate amid media claims that NUFC were technically the richest football club on the planet.

A frenzy of speculation erupted as to the identity of the successor to Steve Bruce (although he remained in post) and a stellar cast of alleged signing targets.

But more importantly, the toxic Mike Ashley era was finally over after more than 14 miserable years.

2
022 12 months on from the takeover, Eddie Howe was asked for his thoughts:

"The club's come a long way. That positivity is still there. It's a difficult thing to keep & everyone behind the scenes has done a very good job in putting the building blocks in place for what the club needs for long term success."

2023 Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes signed a new five year contract to remain on Tyneside until 2028.

2024 A board level addition saw
Roger Thornton become a Magpie director.

South Shields born Thornton arrived with a background in property asset management gained from a company controlled by club co-owner, Jamie Reuben.

Thornton's grandfather was former club official Ben Sullivan, who was involved in the redevelopment of the Popular Side terrace into the East Stand in the 1970s.
