U21s:
Boston three party
for Toon teen
Boston United 1 Newcastle U21s 3

Newcastle U21 coach Adam Lawrence
saw his side win their first game since his arrival last month on
Wednesday, thanks to a first half hat-trick from Sean Neave.
The 18 year-old striker extended his seasonal scoring record to
seven goals in eight U21 starts, as United made it two wins from
their first two ties in the
National League Cup.
A foul on visiting defender Charlie McArthur by Kieren Donnelly gave
Neave an opportunity to open the scoring and he converted his
penalty with 16 minutes played.
The green-clad Magpies then doubled their lead on the half hour when
Neave took Scott Bailey's pass before calmly steering a low shot
past goalkeeper Bobby Jones.
Some fine skill by Korean winger Park Seung-soo then set up Neave to
complete his treble five minutes before the interval, winning his
one on one with Jones and side-footing home for his first U21
hat-trick.
The Pilgrims reduced the deficit two minutes after the break when
Frankie Maguire netted from distance, but despite enjoying a greater
share of possession, the National League side never looked like
denying Newcastle victory.
Boston remain top of Group D with nine points after completing their
four group stage games, with the Magpies sitting three points behind
in second.
Newcastle complete their group stage fixtures with visits to
Scunthorpe United and Halifax Town in December.
Leeds United, Boro and the mackems make up our group, but along with
ourselves only come up against the four National League teams, not
each other.
Team: Taylor, C.Thompson, McArthur, Heffernan, Pivas (Brayson
78), Bailey, Al.Harrison, Munda, Wooster, Neave (Alabi 86), Seung-soo
(Charlton 70).
Subs n/u: Ad.Harrison, Harper, Watts, Waddani.
Booked: Bailey, McArthur, Munda.
Newcastle gave an U21 debut from the bench late on at Jakeman's
Stadium to 16 year-old midfielder Sam Alabi.
BUFC: Jones, Coyle, Donnelly, Grist, Hiwula, Kelly, Lankshear
(Lavinier 61), Maguire (Bradley 75), Norkett (Hill 62), Teale,
Waldock (Hampson 62).
Subs n/u: Lovett, Alonzi, Batty.
Booked: Lavinier.

Flight risk
Following news that Nick Woltemade's Germany call-up was
delayed after a dose of flu, another two Magpies encountered
problems linking up with their national side.
Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton were named in the Brazil
squad for kickabouts in South Korea and Japan, but were delayed when
a technical problem resulted in their flight from Amsterdam to Seoul
on Tuesday turning back.
The duo then boarded alternative flights to
reach Seoul via two different routes, reducing their preparation
time for Friday's game.
Woltemade meanwhile was cleared to travel after his symptoms eased
and join the German squad at their Herzogenaurach
base on Tuesday night.
However he wasn't expected to train on Wednesday and remains a
doubtful participant in Friday's game.
Anthony Gordon and Dan Burn did link up with England,
but injury meant Thomas Tuchel couldn't call on Tino Livramento.
Fitness concerns saw Lewis Hall withdraw from the U21s,
leaving Lewis Miley as Newcastle's only representative at that level
for the Three Lions.
Sandro Tonali made it to Italy's training centre near
Florence unscathed, while Anthony Elanga was put up for
interview by Sweden on Tuesday, responding to questions about his
club form by saying:
"It's a marathon, not a sprint. It's just about staying focused.
I know how good I am and how good I can be. When I get the chance, I
have to take it. When a goal comes in, it will click.
"It's a new system, new players and they'll get comfortable
with me and I with them.
(Eddie Howe is) a fantastic coach who I'm learning a lot
from. For me, he is the best coach I have ever had. He helps me a
lot on and off the field. I feel like I am getting better - that is
the most important thing.
"I've played ten games, I think I've started six. We'll have 60
games this year and the coach is smart and knows what he's doing.
"The way we play takes a lot of strain on the body. It requires
intensity. He tries to keep everyone fresh and ready. We've won
games, that's the most important thing."
PS: Emil Krafth (Sweden) and William Osula
(Denmark) were both omitted from selection, while the form of
Nick Pope (England), Sven Botman (Netherlands) or
Malick Thiaw (Germany) failed to trigger any call-ups.
Yoane Wissa's unavailability meanwhile means he misses DR
Congo's final two World Cup qualifiers in the coming days, against
Togo and Sudan.
Trailing group leaders Senegal by two points with only one side
qualifying automatically, DR Congo look increasingly likely to drop
into November's playoff four team CAF playoffs - with success in
that seeing them advance to an Inter Confederation playoff staged
next March.
All that is over and above DR Congo's position as one of 24 teams
participating in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals between December
21st and January 18th in Morocco.

Scarf ace

Following the success of matching bucket
and bobble hats, a Lee scarf has been added to the range of
products on offer from Tyneside's own Football Bobbles.
Inspired by United's distinctive 1997/98 season change kit
and echoing the current change ensemble, these are available online
here
now.
(Anyone purchasing Lee scarves can take advantage of price
reductions on Ferdinand scarves and Tino bobble hats - see link
above for further details).
We have a Lee scarf up for grabs in a free-to-enter competition and to
stand a chance of winning it, simply require you to answer the following question:
United announced their return to European competition in
spectacular style in 1994, with Rob Lee netting a hat-trick against
Royal Antwerp in a 5-0 away win. What did all three of Lee's goals
that night have in common?
Email that to [email protected]
with subject Scarf.
Closing date is 11am on Tuesday October 14th. No age limit, open to
anyone on the planet. Delivery only to UK addresses. One entry each please per

Mansfield Town (a)

Wednesday week (15th October) sees Newcastle U21s return to action in the second of their three
EFL Trophy Northern Group F stages ties.
Their opponents at the One Call Stadium in a 7.45pm kick-off
are a Mansfield Town side managed by Nigel Clough who lost
their opening tie 0-1 to Harrogate Town.
Newcastle are also currently pointless following a 2-6 defeat at
Huddersfield Town.
Tickets are now on sale
here priced £10 adults and £5 concessions. Free
registration is required to purchase, with away fans housed in a
section of the North Stand.
If ties are drawn after 90 minutes each team gets a point and a
penalty shootout takes place for an extra point.
This will be United's third visit to what was formerly known as
Field Mill in this competition, the Stags running out 6-3 winners in
2021 and registering a 3-0 success in 2024.
Update:
Willie McFaul RIP

Former goalkeeper, coach and manager Willie McFaul sadly died
on Saturday,
just days after his 82nd birthday.
Willie, or Iam as he was also known, was a g oalkeeper
famously signed by United despite conceding seven
goals for Linfield in a friendly match at SJP in
September 1966.
Making his debut in a 0-2 home defeat by Liverpool
in November of the same year, Iam had become first
choice between the posts by the summer of 1968 and
played in all but one of the club's 59 games that
season.
He appeared in all twelve games of the club's
first European adventure, doing his bit to get United
into the final with a penalty save against Rangers at
Ibrox.
Future Fairs Cup campaigns in the following two
seasons saw Iam maintain his 100% appearance record,
scoring in the penalty shootout against Pecsi Dozsa in
1970/71, when the referee summoned United back from
the dressing room to complete the sequence of kicks -
despite the Hungarians having already won on
penalties.
Often featured on TV as the goalkeeper who concedes
two goals at Hereford in 1972, Willie played what was
to be his final game for the club at the end of the
1974/75 season, moving on to the SJP coaching staff.
Installed for the first time as caretaker manager
(briefly) in 1977, McFaul then took over again in 1985
following the abrupt departure of Jack Charlton and
was soon handed the job on a permanent basis.
Giving youth team startlet Paul Gascoigne his first
senior start, Iam (by now universally known as Willie)
kept the side together despite the departures of
messrs Waddle, Beardsley and later Gascoigne.
However, a spending spree ahead of the 1988/89 season
proved to be his downfall as new boys Dave Beasant,
Andy Thorn and John Hendrie failed to improve his side
and he was dismissed following a run of poor results.
McFaul returned to his native Northern Ireland and
worked as an Irish FA coach and with local sides
before accepting a FIFA -backed posting to become the
coach of Guam, an island in the South Pacific.
By 2004 Willie was back coaching in his homeland, as
well as scouting for Norwich City during Glenn
Roeder's time in Norfolk.
He returned to SJP in 2009 to take part in the 40th
anniversary celebrations of the Fairs Cup victory and confessed that he was
"delighted and a wee bit emotional" to be reunited with his colleagues and the
trophy.

Old boys:
Not led by Donkeys
Following a 0-2 home defeat by AFC Wimbledon that left Blackpool second bottom of League One on
Saturday, the Seasiders dismissed manager Steve Bruce.
Ex-Magpie coaches Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence also leave
Bloomfield Road with immediate effect.
Also newly back on the job market are Mike Williamson who has left
his coaching role at Rangers and Neil McDonald, no longer on the
staff at Hartlepool United.
The latter's departure was followed by the arrival of former
Newcastle U21 coach Elliot Dickman at 'Pools.
Bruce's immediate predecessor at SJP also has a new job, Ben Dawson taking up a coaching position at Danish
side Brondby.
Out of football since leaving Leicester City in February, the 44
year-old is reunited with his former Foxes boss Steve Cooper at the
Superliga side.

Cup capitulation
Aston Villa U18s 7 Newcastle U18s 1
Newcastle's U18 side returned to
Premier League Cup action on Saturday, suffering a second half nightmare
against Aston Villa at their Bodymoor Heath training facility.
It was 1-1 at half-time when a Tom Old effort from close range equalised Markie Meade's fifth
minute opener for the hosts 20 minutes later.
It was still level with half an hour remaining, but after Jack
McGrath put Villa ahead, Teddie Bloomfield (70) got a third Meade (71) and McGrath (80) got their second goals.
Meade
then completed his hat-trick two minutes from the end before the scoring was completed in
the fourth minute of added time when Olly Lloyd got Villa's
seventh.
The home side featured Cole Ramsey, younger brother of current
Magpie Jacob.
Team: Dowell, Bloomer, Goodbrand (Durrant 59), Old, Moran,
M.Miley (Cogdon 59), Pinnington (Patterson 75), Ireoluwa, O'Donovan
(Lucas 75), Seldon, Hutchison.
Sub n/u: Mair.
With two games played, Newcastle sit third in Group B with three
points, three behind Villa and level with Leicester City.
The
Magpies host bottom-placed Liverpool late next month in their third
and final game. The top two in each of the eight groups progress to
the quarter final stage.

Belfast boy
Out now from Pitch
Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill
McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons,
winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines
worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.
Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in
managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to
Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

United are back in Premier League action on Saturday week,
October 18th when they head to the Amex Stadium - a venue
that they've never won at in the top flight.
Eight previous Premier League visits have ended in five draws and
three home wins.
The Magpies are winless against the Seagulls in the most recent five
league and cup meetings at home and away.

Hinshelwood remain out but Joel Veltman and Kaoru Mitoma both should
return to the squad following injury.
Matt O'Riley is on loan at Marseille while Igor Julio has made a
temporary switch to West Ham.
Fabian Hurzeler's side are unbeaten on home turf so far this season,
drawing with Fulham (1-1) and Spurs (2-2) and defeating Manchester
City (2-1). Adding in last season, Albion haven't lost at the Amex
in seven PL outings.
Ex-Magpie James Milner made his 643rd Premier League appearance in
Brighton's last PL fixture at Wolves. That leaves the 39 year-old
ten behind record holder Gareth Barry, who played in 653 PL matches.
As a measure of his longevity, Milner played his very first PL game
in the colours of Leeds United in November 2002, two days before
current Magpie Tino Livramento was born.

On This Day in History |
|
9th October |
|
Born Or Died:
905 Jimmy Loughlin born,
Darlington.
(1924-27)
Forward who swapped Darlington
Railway Athletic for Newcastle in November 1924,
debuting a month later in a 0-0 draw away to Huddersfield
Town.
Failing to secure a regular place in the side despite
an enviable scoring record when promoted from the
reserves to deputise for Neil Harris and Hughie
Gallacher.
Joining West Ham in a £650 transfer in 1927, Jimmy
played there for a single season, with his final
Hammers appearance coming in a 1-3 defeat at SJP in
May 1928.
Moving on to Coventry City, Loughlin had three
prolific seasons at the Division Three (South) side
but was unable to help them secure promotion.
Leaving Coventry in 1931, he spent time in
Ireland and played for two clubs in the Dublin area
before returning to England and signing for Worcester
City.
After a stint at Northwich Victoria, Jimmy rounded
off his playing career at Darlington during the
1933/34 season.
His death was recorded in Darlington during February
1954.

1948 Stewart Fellows born, Stockton.
(1964-67)

Midfielder who captained United's N's
Nursery side to Northern Intermediate Cup success,
having begun his career as a forward.
A reserve team bow followed in a 2-1 home win over
Liverpool during December 1965, but Stuart failed to
advance into the senior squad and was released in May
1967.
Making two appearances for York City during the
following season, Fellows later played for Kings Lynn
Town.
1988 The North East lost perhaps
its most famous and well-loved footballer when John
Edward Thompson Milburn passed away at home in
Ashington. He was 64.

1975 Mark Viduka
born, Melbourne, Australia. (2007-09)
Having impressed
in games against us for Dynamo Zagreb, Celtic,
Leeds and the smoggies - not to mention scoring a few
goals - the free transfer arrival of this Australian
international should have been a source of joy.
However, all but the most gullible were also aware of
a level of injury/selfishness that had left fans of
his previous employers not overly distressed at his
departure from them.
In common with fellow former Magpies Duncan Ferguson
and Paul Kitson, Viduka gave the impression that he
only took to the field of play when it suited him to
appear for his own benefit - hardly a team ethic.
A disturbing tendency to disappear in mid season (a
hibernation of sorts) was matched only by a habit of
reappearing in late season and finding the net,
presumably hoping that this would be enough for
management and fans to forget his missing months.
And things panned out almost exactly as predicted for
the Aussie striker at SJP, with 25 league starts from a possible 76.
Beginning with a starting berth in the 3-1
season-opening victory at Bolton, forty appearances in all competitions brought
seven
goals - all in the Premier League.
However, they were all scored in his first season
of participation; six starts and six substitute appearances in our relegation
season failed to harvest a goal.
Viduka's own personal contribution to our eventual
demise came in the penultimate game at home to
Fulham, referee Howard Webb ruling
out a goal for pushing.
Rumours of a free transfer move to the
Premier League failed to follow, with only a brief
abortive stint training at Fulham.
Offered a deal by
the Cottagers that he initially declined, Viduka then
changed his mind, only to find that manager Roy Hodgson was no
longer interested.
Returning to Australia, he was reported to
be in talks with A League side Melbourne Victory in
2010 but nothing came of it.
And to nobody's great surprise, he finally confirmed
his retirement in February 2011 when accepting the
Alex Tobin medal for his services to Australian
football. And pies.
The son of Croatian-born parents, Viduka began his
playing career as schoolboy with Melbourne Croatia
before moving to Dynamo Zagreb at the age of 19.
Despite gaining his coaching badges after
retirement, he later returned to Zagreb and ran a
coffee shop with his wife.

1993 Jonathan Hooper born, Greenwich.
(2011-13)
Striker who made an instant impact
for Newcastle's U18 side, notching a debut hat trick
against Chelsea in August 2011.
Previously appearing for the junior side of Cray Wanderers,
Hooper had just joined Kent Premier League side
Sevenoaks Town when offered a trial with the Magpies.
And after impressing during an extended trial in
pre-season, he then agreed a two year deal at United's
Academy.
"JJ" made his second string debut in a 3-0
away victory over Bolton just
before his 18th birthday and netted his first Reserves
goal at the Britannia Stadium in September 2012 during
a
5-1 win against Stoke City.
Loan spells at Darlington and Workington followed but
Hooper failed to progress and was released by United in Summer 2013.
Following trials at Sheffield Wednesday and Northampton
Town, a contract offer from the Cobblers materialised
but all five of JJ's senior outings ended in defeat.
Later moves took him to Alfreton
Town (loan), Farnborough (loan), Havant & Waterlooville,
Inverness Caledonian Thistle (trial) Port
Vale, Northampton Town (loan), Grimsby Town, Bromley
(loan), Wrexham, Barnet, Hartlepool United (trial), South Shields,
Gloucester City, Blyth Spartans, Spennymoor Town and Morpeth Town.

Newcastle's first away league win since January was
due in no small part to the endeavours of 18 year-old duo
Keith Dyson and Alan Foggon.
Forest fielded on-loan goalkeeper Brian Sherratt and
within hours had concluded the permanent signing of
Newcastle's reserve custodian Gordon Marshall.
Victory came at great cost to Geoff Allen, the
winger sustaining the cruciate injury that curtailed his
playing career and cost him a possible Fairs Cup winners
medal.
This was the fourth of six games that Forest played at nearby
Meadow Lane due to fire damage at the City Ground - they
failed to win any of them.

However, no further goals came despite our overwhelming

Classic Toon: one week on from an improbable 2-1 win
at Liverpool, United crumbled spectacularly on Tyneside.
A defence marshalled by future Magpie Brian Kilcline did
their job as the Sky Blues ran out victorious for the
fourth time in six SJP visits.
1989 Overlooked by
Newcastle for not having completed a full decade of
service, a belated benefit game took place at Whitley
Bay's Hillheads ground for ex-Magpie Len White.
1,500 fans saw Newcastle Reserves draw 0-0 with an
All-Star side on a Sunday afternoon. Familiar faces in the
All-Stars included Peter Withe, Alan Kennedy and Steve
Bruce.
The testimonial was preceded by a game staged between
Old Boys XIs representing Newcastle and the mackems.
That ended 5-3 to the Magpies, for whom Ron McGarry
netted twice and 59 year-old White once (other scorers tbc).
1997 Paul Brayson scored the only goal of the game as
the reserves beat Bury at Gigg Lane.
2003 Newcastle's
Pontins League reserve side finally managed to claim a win
at the fifth attempt, 3-1 at Doncaster Rovers.
With over £20m-worth of
transfers in the Toon team, despite no less than seven of
our starting XI having come through the ranks, United
dominated proceedings without ever threatening an
avalanche of goals.
Goals from Lomana LuaLua (2) and Nolberto Solano
ultimately decided the match in what was to be our final
visit to Belle Vue.

2006 Another year, another edition of "The

Sky TV fixture.
Goals from Toon old boys Ian Rush and Chris Waddle saw the
alleged celebs XI suffer a third successive defeat in
front of an officially-claimed 52,000 crowd.

Frank Danquah and Matty Pattison in a 3-1 win.

2012 A first reserve win in four games came at
