Director of Football posts at Huddersfield Town, Southampton and
Rangers.
The Magpies parted company with previous Sporting Director Paul Mitchell
in June, less than a year after he had succeeded Dan Ashworth.

Scarf ace

Update: apologies to anyone who was unable to
complete their orders due to an online payment issue, this has now
been successfully resolved.
Following the success of matching buck et
and bobble hats, a Lee scarf has been added to the range of
products on offer from Tyneside's own Football Bobbles.
Inspired by United's distinctive 1997/98 season change kit
and echoing the current change ensemble, these are available online
here
now.
(Anyone purchasing Lee scarves can take advantage of price
reductions on Ferdinand scarves and Tino bobble hats - see link
above for further details).
We have a Lee scarf up for grabs in a free-to-enter competition and to
stand a chance of winning it, simply require you to answer the following question:
United announced their return to European competition in
spectacular style in 1994, with Rob Lee netting a hat-trick against
Royal Antwerp in a 5-0 away win. What did all three of Lee's goals
that night have in common?
Email that to
[email protected]
with subject Scarf.
Closing date is 11am on Tuesday October 14th. No age limit, open to
anyone on the planet. Delivery only to UK addresses. One entry each please per
person.

Belfast boy
Out now from Pitch
Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill
McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons,
winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines
worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.
Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in
managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to
Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

Brighton (a)

United are back in Premier League action on Saturday week,
October 18th when they head to the Amex Stadium - a venue
that they've never won at in the top flight.
Eight previous Premier League visits have ended in five draws and
three home wins.
The Magpies are winless against the Seagulls in the most recent five
league and cup meetings at home and away.
It's an old-fashioned 3pm start with no live UK TV.

BHAFC: Solly March, Adam Webster and Jack
Hinshelwood remain out but Joel Veltman and Kaoru Mitoma both should
return to the squad following injury.
Matt O'Riley is on loan at Marseille while Igor Julio has made a
temporary switch to West Ham.
Fabian Hurzeler's side are unbeaten on home turf so far this season,
drawing with Fulham (1-1) and Spurs (2-2) and defeating Manchester
City (2-1). Adding in last season, Albion haven't lost at the Amex
in seven PL outings.
Ex-Magpie James Milner made his 643rd Premier League appearance in
Brighton's last PL fixture at Wolves. That leaves the 39 year-old
ten behind record holder Gareth Barry, who played in 653 PL matches.
As a measure of his longevity, Milner played his very first PL game
in the colours of Leeds United in November 2002, two days before
current Magpie Tino Livramento was born.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log
on and complete your purchase regardless.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered
to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.
Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are
gone.
2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.
2025/26 CL away tickets are €50 or less.

Born Or Died:
1916 Willie Scott born, Bucksburn, Scotland.
(1938-46)

Centre forward who was signed by
United for £3,750 immediately after scoring five
goals during a reserve game for Aberdeen.
That was in September 1938 and the following
January saw Willie's first team debut in a 2-0 FA
Cup win at Brentford.
Recovering from a broken leg, Willie's career was
interrupted by the outbreak of war and he was
captured by German forces at Dunkirk in 1940 and
sent to a POW camp.
Returning to SJP at the end of hostilities, Willie
failed to make the grade and joined non-league side
Consett on a free transfer in the summer of 1946,
taking a job at the local steelworks.
Later relocating to the Aberdeen area, Willie became a
lollipop man and his death was recorded in August
1994.
His son Jocky was a Scottish international who played
for Dundee and Aberdeen before becoming a
much-travelled manager on both sides of the border,
including a stint coaching at the mackems.

1935 Bill Redhead born, Newcastle.
(1954-59)

Defender whose sole first team outing
for United came in a 2-1 home defeat by Sheffield
Wednesday in December 1956, deputising in midfield
for Tommy Casey.
Released by Newcastle on a free transfer in 1959, Bill
signed for Gateshead - one of two spells with the
Tynesiders that sandwiched a stint with South
Shields.
Redhead then wound down his career with Queen of the
South from 1965 to 1967.

1935 Albert Scanlon born, Manchester.
(1960-62)

Fleet-footed outside left who joined
Manchester United straight from school, turning
professional in 1952.
Twice an FA Youth Cup winner, Albert was part of the
Championship winning sides of 1956 & 1957 and
survived the 1958 Munich Air Disaster, recovering
from a fractured skull, a broken leg and kidney
damage.
An England U23 international, Albert was a nephew of
Newcastle manager Charlie Mitten and moved to
Tyneside in November 1960 at a cost of £17,500.
Debuting in a 3-1 home win over Blackburn Rovers that
same month, Albert was unable to prevent the Magpies
dropping into the Second Division.
Making just two starts in the 1961/62 season before
Mitten was sacked, Albert joined Lincoln City in
February 1962 and later played for Mansfield and
Belper Town.
Living in the Salford area afterwards, he worked as a
baker, dock labourer and night watchman in a
factory.
Albert died in December 2009 aged 74, having been
admitted to hospital three months earlier with
pneumonia and kidney problems.
Following his passing, former Manchester Evening
News reporter David Meek said:
"He (Albert) was a bit like an unknown
sufferer. The ones killed or injured (at Munich
) who could not play again obviously suffered.
Some survived and went on to have illustrious
careers like Bobby Charlton. But Albert was one that
appeared to be OK but lost that magic spark.
"Although he survived the Munich air crash and was
able to return to playing after recovering from his
injuries, he was never quite the same player again.
The accident took something out of him and robbed
him of a talent that really looked very, very
special playing with the Busby Babes."
June 2014 saw former team mate Bobby Charlton
unveil street signs at the newly-christened Scanlon
Way - in the Pendleton area of the city.

1963 Bjorn Kristensen born, Malling, Denmark.
(1989-93)
Danish international
defender/midfielder who was signed from AGF Aarhus
in March 1989 at a cost of £260K.
Making his debut in a 1-2 home defeat by Aston Villa
the following month, "Benny" had to wait until
September 1989 before he finished on the winning
side for United.
Becoming a mainstay of the side in the 1989/90 and
1990/91 campaigns, Benny finally broke his scoring
duck at SJP against Stoke City in April 1990 - and
promptly went and scored again in the same match.
A serious knee injury restricted Kristensen to just
two appearances in 1991/92 as Kevin Keegan returned
and United narrowly avoided relegation to the Third
Division.
Failing to win a place in the starting XI the
following season, Benny was part of the shadow squad
who featured in the Anglo Italian Cup before opting
to join Bristol City on loan in November 1992.
A permanent £120K transfer to Portsmouth in March 1993
then saw Benny reunited with former Magpies boss Jim
Smith.
Returning to his native Denmark in 1995 with AAB
Aalborg, he later rejoined Aarhus and became their
marketing manager and part time youth coach
following retirement.
Working as an employment consultant in Odense, Benny
played for the AGF veterans' side with another SJP
old boy - the rather less fondly-recalled Frank
Pingel.

1966 Ernest Mtawali born, Bloemfontein, South
Africa. (1993)
Malawi national team captain, Ernest arrived at United on
trial from South African side Mamelodi Sundowns in March
1993.
Debuting for the reserves in a 0-0 draw with Bolton
Wanderers at SJP, the midfielder kept his place for another
goalless draw two weeks later before leaving Tyneside.
Joining Newell's Old Boys the following year, Ernest
moved on to fellow Argentinean side Talleres before a switch
to France during 1997 with Toulouse.
By 1999 he was with the Al-Wehda club in Saudi Arabia,
later serving Orlando Pirates and Ajax Capetown back in
South Africa.
Following a stint as Malawi's U20 coach, Mtawali took
charge of their senior team in 2015. However, poor results
saw him relieved of his post a year later.

of the two sides.
Magpies boss Charlie Mitten fielded all but two of the
side beaten 0-2 at Aston Villa in Division One the
previous Saturday, but Bryan Harvey's error gave Tommy
Williams an easy chance to open the scoring.
Martyn King almost immediately doubled Colchester's lead
before Peter Wright put them three ahead on half time.
Duncan Neale shot home from distance at the start of the
second half, but the hosts didn't panic and another rick
by Harvey on a wet pitch gave his second of the tie.
