Internationals:
Harland & Wolte!

Current Magpies receiving country calls:

Nick Woltemade (Germany):
Mon 13.10.2025 Northern Ireland (a) won 1-0 WCQ
A first international goal for the Newcastle striker gave his side victory in Belfast, converting a 31st minute corner kick from close range with his head and/or arm.

In doing so, Woltemade emulated fellow countryman Didi Hamann, whose only strike for Germany while a Magpie also came at Windsor Park back in 1999.

Big Nick was replaced in second half added time.

Fri 10.10.2025 Luxembourg (h) won 4-0 WCQ
A starting spot for the striker in Sinsheim but no maiden international goal in his 61 minutes of action.

Anthony Elanga (Sweden):

Mon 13.10.2025 Kosovo (h) lost 0-1 WCQ
Another disastrous night for the Swedes, whose chances of World Cup Final qualification are now almost over, following defeat in Gothenburg.

Elanga was introduced as a half time substitute while Isak completed the full 90 minutes.

Fri 10.10.2025 Switzerland (h) lost 0-2 WCQ
More woe for Jon Dahl Tomasson's side in Stockholm, with Elanga remaining unused on the bench.

Alexander Isak took the captain's armband and completed the 90 full minutes without managing a shot on target.

Anthony Gordon, Dan Burn (England):

Tue 14.10.2025 Latvia (a) Riga WCQ

Thu 09.10.2025 Wales (h) won 3-0 FR
A 90 minute shift for Gordon at Wembley, beginning on the left flank and finishing up in a  more central position. Fellow Magpie Burn remained unused on the bench, available to club and country despite scans confirming a broken hand.

SJP old boys Elliot Anderson and Karl Darlow featured for the home and away sides respectively, while the Welsh were coached by Craig Bellamy.

Bruno Guimaraes/Joelinton (Brazil):
Tue 14.10.2025 Japan (a) Tokyo FR

Fri 10.10.2025 South Korea (a) won 5-0 FR
A 79 minute shift in Seoul for Bruno, with his incisive through ball setting up the opening goal. Club colleague Joelinton was an unused substitute.

Sandro Tonali (Italy):

Tue 14.10.2025 Israel (h) Udine WCQ

Sat 11.10.2025 Estonia (a) won 1-3 WCQ
Victory for the Azzurri in Tallinn, with the Newcastle midfielder completing the entire game.

Leo Shahar (England U19s):
Tue 14.10.2025 Wales (n) La Quinta FR

Sat 11.10.2025 Belgium (n) won 4-1 FR
The Newcastle full back was introduced in the 67th minute of Saturday's victory in Marbella with the scoring complete.

Following the withdrawal of Lewis Hall from England U21s due to a hamstring problem, fellow Magpie Lewis Miley also pulled out with a calf issue - severity as yet tbc.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Greece):
Sun 12.10.2025 Denmark (a) lost 1-3 WCQ
Defeat for the Greeks in Copenhagen with Vlachodimos returning to the starting line-up.

Thu 09.10.2025 Scotland (a) lost 1-3 Hampden WCQ

Update:
The one where
Ross got hired....

Club statement, Saturday:

Newcastle United are delighted to announce the appointment of Ross Wilson as the club's Sporting Director.

Ross will be responsible for sporting strategy, development and recruitment across men's, women's and Academy teams, working closely with the club's football leadership and executive teams.

He joins from Nottingham Forest, where he served as Chief Football Officer, after Newcastle United triggered his release. The terms of his release will remain confidential between the clubs.

Prior to joining Forest in 2023, Ross was Sporting Director at Glasgow Rangers, helping them to their first league title for ten years, a Scottish Cup and a place in the UEFA Europa League final.

He said: "I'm absolutely delighted to be here at Newcastle United. This is such a special club, and I fully understand the passion, ambition and expectations of our incredible supporters, as well as the ambition and desire of our ownership to keep developing and building an even stronger Newcastle United.

"My conversations with ownership have been extremely positive, and I've also been in regular contact with Eddie Howe and David Hopkinson. The trust, cohesion and alignment we're building already feels strong, and we believe that being united as a team will be so important as we continue to move the club forward together.

"I'm excited to work with everyone across the different areas within our football department. There's already excellent work being done here and, from the first team to the women's team and academy, my aim is to build on that, strengthen our structures over time, and work with our staff to create environments where players and staff can continue to thrive."

David Hopkinson, Newcastle United's CEO, said: "I am delighted to welcome Ross to Newcastle United. His experience and expertise immediately strengthen us, and his appointment is another important step forward in our journey.

"Ross has a track record of delivering strategic change. He has instilled processes and built relationships that have helped his clubs to win and grow, and he has demonstrated his ability to enhance talent pathways and integrate women's football into the same high-performing culture.

"We are looking forward to working with him as we build towards our ambitions for long-term sustainable success."

The 41 year-old Falkirk native Wilson arrived at the City Ground in 2023 following Director of Football posts at Huddersfield Town, Southampton and Rangers.

The Magpies parted company with previous Sporting Director Paul Mitchell in June, less than a year after he had succeeded Dan Ashworth.

Update:
Flo & Miggy still at it

Elsewhere on the international circuit, two SJP old boys were on target and a trio of ex-Mags drew blanks.

Friday night saw former Magpie Florian Thauvin recalled for a first French cap since 2019. Now playing for Racing Club Lens, the 32 year-old netted just seconds after coming off the bench against Azerbaijan at Parc Des Princes.

A more familiar scorer was Miggy Almiron, scoring for Paraguay during a 2-2 friendly draw in Japan, netting his ninth international goal and first since leaving United.

Failing to add to his considerable tally was Chris Wood, featuring in a rare European fixture for New Zealand, but scoreless against Poland in Warsaw on Thursday.

Saturday saw similar blanks for Aleksander Mitrovic as Serbia were beaten 0-1 at home by Albania and Mikel Merino in Spain's 2-0 home success over Georgia.

Compo
:
Scarf ace

Following the success of matching buck
et and bobble hats, a Lee scarf has been added to the range of products on offer from Tyneside's own Football Bobbles.

Inspired by United's distinctive 1997/98 season change kit and echoing the current change ensemble, these are available online here
now.

(Anyone purchasing Lee scarves can take advantage of price reductions on Ferdinand scarves and Tino bobble hats - see link above for further details).

We have a Lee scarf up for grabs in a free-to-enter competition and to stand a chance of winning it, simply require you to answer the following question:

United announced their return to European competition in spectacular style in 1994, with Rob Lee netting a hat-trick against Royal Antwerp in a 5-0 away win. What did all three of Lee's goals that night have in common?

Email that to
[email protected] with subject Scarf.

Closing date is 11am on Tuesday October 14th. No age limit, open to anyone on the planet. Delivery only to UK addresses. One entry each please per person.

Premier League:
TV times awaited

Assuming that the Premier League follow their timetable, the December 2025 and January 2026 fixture alterations are due to be communicated on Wednesday of this week.

A total of 11 Newcastle games are "at risk" as follows:

Wed 03.12.2025 Spurs (h)
Sat 06.12.2025 Burnley (h)
Sat 13.12.2025 mackems (a)
Sat 20.12.2025 Chelsea (h)
Sat 27.12.2025 Manchester United (a)
Tue 30.12.2025 Burnley (a)

Sat 03.01.2026 Crystal Palace (h)
Wed 07.01.2026 Leeds United (h)
Sat 17.01.2026 Wolves (a)
Sat 24.01.2026 Aston Villa (h)*
Sat 31.01.2026 Liverpool (a)

No PL games were listed for
December 26th and January 1st when the original fixture announcement was made, but the PL confirm that their only "blackout" day is December 24th.

That means that some PL fixtures are liable to be played on both Boxing Day and New Years Day.

* Aston Villa's PL visit to SJP will move from Saturday January 24th due to their Europa League participation on Thursday January 22nd.

U21s:
Mansfield Town (a)

Wednesday sees Newcastle U21s return to action in the second of Three EFL Trophy Northern Group F stages ties.

Their opponents at the One Call Stadium in a 7.45pm kick-off are a Mansfield Town side managed by Nigel Clough who lost their opening tie 0-1 to Harrogate Town.

Newcastle are also currently pointless following a 2-6 defeat at Huddersfield Town.

Tickets are now on sale here priced £10 adults and £5 concessions. Free registration is required to purchase, with away fans housed in a section of the North Stand.

The game will be shown live on Sky Sports.

If ties are drawn after 90 minutes each team gets a point and a penalty shootout takes place for an extra point.

This will be United's third visit to what was formerly known as Field Mill in this competition, the Stags running out 6-3 winners in 2021 and registering a 3-0 success in 2024.

Referee: Matt Corlett.

2025/26:
Brighton (a)

Newcastle return to Premier League action on Saturday, when they head to the Amex Stadium - a venue that they've never won at in the top flight.

Eight previous Premier League visits have ended in five draws and three home wins.

The Magpies are winless against the Seagulls in the most recent five league and cup meetings at home and away.

It's an old-fashioned 3pm start, with no live UK TV.

Team: Jacob Ramsey is expected to return to the squad, but Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento and Yoane Wissa remain unavailable. Lewis Miley is doubtful.

Fabian Schar remains one game away from a double century of Premier League appearances, while Joelinton has made 199 starts in all competitions for United to date. Dan Burn has made 149 league and cup starts for the club.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 17/10
The draw 12/5
BHAFC win 8/5

New customers receive a £20 bet when staking £5 (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

BHAFC:
Solly March, Adam Webster and Jack Hinshelwood remain out but Joel Veltman and Kaoru Mitoma both should return to the squad following injury.

Matt O'Riley is on loan at Marseille while Igor Julio has made a temporary switch to West Ham.

Fabian Hurzeler's side are unbeaten on home turf so far this season, drawing with Fulham (1-1) and Spurs (2-2) and defeating Manchester City (2-1). Adding in last season, Albion haven't lost at the Amex in seven PL outings.

SJP old boy James Milner made his 643rd Premier League appearance in Brighton's last PL fixture at Wolves. That leaves the 39 year-old ten behind record holder Gareth Barry, who played in 653 PL matches.

As a measure of his longevity, Milner played his very first PL game in the colours of Leeds United in November 2002, two days before current Magpie Tino Livramento was born.

Of a rather different vintage is ex-Magpie Yankuba Minteh, who scored in both of his appearances against United last season - once in the PL and once in the FA Cup.

The 21 year-old is on international duty with Gambia, scoring against Gabon on Friday and in line to face Seychelles on Tuesday.

Referee: Craig Pawson - second appointment this season involving Newcastle after the 0-0 draw at Aston Villa.

The South Yorkshire whistler took charge of last season's visit to Brighton, awarding United no less than three spot kicks, only one of which survived VAR scrutiny.

Belfast boy

Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons, winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.

Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

*The original staging of this tie was curtailed due to floodlight failure with Blyth Spartans leading 2-0.

The NFA have allowed Newcastle U21s to withdraw from the competition this season due to other commitments.

Regular participants since East End/West End days, the Magpies withdrew from the competition back in 1933 and belatedly returned in 1983.

The Senior Cup Final will be played at SJP once again.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

2025/26 CL away tickets are €50 or less.

On This Day in History
13th October

Born Or Died:

1932 Ken Prior born, Newcastle.
(1952-54 & 1956-57)

Outside left Ken caught the eye with Northumberland boys and Cambois Juniors, landing a trial at United thanks to the intervention of Jackie Milburn.

Impressing enough to be signed as an amateur, Ken rapidly rose to the first team, debuting at home to Middlesbrough in April 1952.

On standby for the FA Cup side that year, he was denied an opportunity when first-choice Bobby Mitchell opted to play on with heavy strapping on his leg.

What was to Ken's eighth and final senior game came in October 1952 and with no prospect of further action, he joined Millwall during May 1954.

The move seemed to do him good and both Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle looked to sign him - family ties seeing Ken agree to another stint at SJP in 1956.

The substantial presence of 'Mitch' was still ahead of him though and he only added a further two competitive appearances to his tally before leaving for Berwick Rangers in January 1957 with fellow Magpie Alan Bartle.

Ken struggled with a knee injury at Shielfield and left at the end of the following season.

Reverting to playing part-time with North Shields while working as an electrician, Prior later served Horden before moving on to Ashington in 1965.

Appointed as Colliers player-manager two years later, Prior remained in charge at Portland Park until stepping down during January 1972 and joining the club board.

Subsequently managing Alnwick Town, Ken's friendship with Jack Charlton saw Ken scout for Middlesbrough during the 1970s.

Ken passed away at the age of 88 during November 2020.

1952 Gordon Hodgson born, Newcastle.
(1970-74)

Midfielder Gordon joined United as a schoolboy in 1970, a product of Montagu and North Fenham Boys club.

Blooded at the age of 17 in a 4-0 Central League win at Preston North End in February 1971, Hodgson signed a professional contract at SJP that summer.

The England youth international was included in the Newcastle party for a 0-5 loss at Liverpool during March 1972, making his senior bow in a 0-1 defeat away to Nottingham Forest a month later.

Receiving infrequent call-ups to the first team during the 1972/73 campaign, Gordon made just two appearances the following season - the last of which was a 1-2 reverse at Manchester city during March 1974.

A non-playing member of United's squad for the FA Cup Final loss to Liverpool at Wembley two months later, Hodgson left Gallowgate days later to join Mansfield Town, managed by ex-Magpie coach, Dave Smith.

Helping to Stags to the Fourth Division Championship in 1975 and the Third Division title two years later, Gordon was sold to Oxford United in 1978.

Subsequently with Peterborough United a career change came in 1982 when he joined the police force, combining that for a time with playing for non-league Kings Lynn Town and March Town.

Gordon died in April 1999 and a minute's silence was observed at Field Mill before the Mansfield Town v Southend United game.

1955 Richard Money born, Lowestoft.
(2008-09)

Defender who appeared for Lowesoft Town, Scunthorpe United, Liverpool, Fulham, Derby County (loan), Luton Town, Portsmouth and Scunthorpe in a 17 year playing career.

Beginning his managerial career at the Iron, Money subsequently held coaching roles at Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Coventry City before taking charge of AIK Stockholm during 2003.

Later moves saw him manage fellow Swedes Vasteras and Aussies Newcastle Jets before returning to England with League One Walsall during 2006.

Appointed Academy Director at Newcastle United in June 2008, Richard remained in post until October 2009 when released in order to become Luton Town manager.

Scouting for Norwich City following his departure from Kenilworth Road in 2011, next came a four year stint at Cambridge United that included a Football League return.

Spells as Academy Director at Atlanta United (USA) and Norwich City were then followed by returns to management with Solihull Moors and then Hartlepool United.

However, that latter stint lasted just 44 days before Money switched to a Director of Football role in January 2019 - only to then quit barely a week later!

Money later worked for several player and sports management agencies.

1964 John Cornwell
born, Bethnal Green.
(1987-88)

As a 16 year old West Ham apprentice, John received a warm reception when he visited SJP, along with his boyhood pal Tony Cottee.

The pair were in the North East corner of the ground supporting the Hammers when the infamous 1980 firebomb incident took place.

That didn't stop him from joining us in a £50K move from Frank Clark's Leyton Orient some seven years later, debuting at number 11 in a 2-1 home win over Southampton.

Appearing in midfield, central defence and at left back during his time @ SJP, John netted once, with a low shot at the Leazes end against Charlton in November 1987.

His final game though was a 2-1 home win over Wimbledon that got new boss Jim Smith off to a good start - moving on to Swindon Town as The Bald Eagle overhauled his squad in a vain attempt to avoid relegation.

Cornwell later appeared for Cardiff City, Northampton Town, Brentford & Southend.

And it was while at the Shrimpers that he was party to one of our darkest days - a 0-4 loss at Roots Hall on New Years Day 1992 that left us bottom of the old Division Two.

After hanging up his boots in 1994 he moved into the pub trade, occasionally popping up in the Newcastle Masters indoor football team.

1980 Scott Parker born, Lambeth.
(2005-07)

Midfielder who came through the ranks at Charlton and made his first team debut in 1997, remaining with Addicks until a £10m transfer to Chelsea in 2004 (he also had a spell on loan at Norwich back in 2000).

However despite earning his first England cap and being voted PFA Young Player of the Year, Scott was only an occasional starter at Stamford Bridge and broke a bone in his foot against Norwich City in December 2004.

That proved to be his final act in a Chelsea shirt and his next first team game was for Newcastle, following a £6.5m transfer in the summer of 2005.

Parker made his United bow in the home leg of the Intertoto Cup tie against Deportivo La Coruna; marking Michael Owen's debut at home to Fulham two months later by being sent off for two bookable offences.

Scoring his first goal at Cheltenham in the FA Cup the following January with an unorthodox effort that went in off his midriff, a rather better strike saw him mark his return to the Valley in March 2006 - although Newcastle lost 1-3.

A bout of glandular fever curtailed Scott's appearances for that season and the next campaign would prove to be his last.

Making public comments about Toon fans having unrealistic expectations hardly endeared club captain Parker to those supporters; trading insults with fans in the East Stand during a home loss to Sheffield United similarly ill-advised.

With Glenn Roeder sacked and Sam Allardyce installed, Parker made a £7m move to West Ham in June 2007.

However, he later denied press reports (and a scandalous re-writing of history by Allardyce) that he'd angled for a move back to London due to family pressures:

"I went to Newcastle and contrary to what people say about not settling in the North East, me and my family absolutely loved it up there. Then a new manager comes in,  has different ideas and sells me."

Despite tumbling into the Championship with West Ham, he was voted as the Football Writers' Association Player of the Year and regained his place back in the England team before moving to Spurs at the end of the 2011 summer transfer window.

After half a century of appearances at White Hart Lane, Parker moved to Fulham in August 2013 for an undisclosed fee.

Enduring relegation in his first season, Scott remained a regular at Craven Cottage and made over 120 appearances before hanging up his boots in June 2017.

Joining Spurs as U18 Academy coach and club ambassador, he was then tempted to make a return to Fulham as first team coach 12 months later.

Caretaker manager for the final months of Fulham's relegation campaign in 2019, Scott took the post permanently on a two year deal, gaining promotion via the play-offs.

However, Fulham were relegated again in May 2021 and Parker left to take over at Championship side AFC Bournemouth, replacing SJP old boy Jonathan Woodgate.

He successfully managed the Cherries back to the Premier League as runners-up to his old club Fulham and they won their first game of the following season.

However, heavy defeats to Manchester City (0-4), Arsenal (0-3) and Liverpool (0-9) and a verbal swipe at the club's transfer policy saw him exit in late August 2022.

At the end of 2022 Scott was appointed manager of Club Brugge, but dismissed after just two wins in 12 games.

He was appointed manager of Burnley after Vincent Company left Turf Moor for Bayern Munich and despite selling a boatload of players, Parker guided the Clarets back to the Premier League after setting new records for goals conceded (just 16 in 46 matches).

PS: Scott's spot in club history is assured, as according to UEFA at least, he - not Bob Moncur - is the last player to have captained Newcastle to European glory.

That was of course our 2006/07 Intertoto Cup "victory" - a feat achieved by being the last of the eleven teams progressing into the UEFA Cup still to be involved.

A trophy presentation duly took place well before kick-off against AZ Alkmaar at SJP in March 2007. Few fans witnessed a low-key ceremony that saw an overjoyed Parker and a randomly-selected Toon fan accept what looked like a sample from a tile warehouse.

PS: we couldn't let his birthday pass without adding a still from a McDonalds TV ad that featured a fresh-faced young master Parker playing keepy-uppy in his back garden.

1980 Karl Colley born, Sheffield.
(2001-02)

6ft 4in central defender who signed a three year deal with Newcastle's Academy following his release by Sheffield Wednesday.

Suffering from homesickness and depression though, Colley lasted only a year at SJP before securing a permanent move to his boyhood heroes, Sheffield United.

Failing to make his senior debut for Blades, Karl joined Ilkeston Town before appearing in the Conference for both Kettering Town and Halifax Town in 2002/03 and 2003/04.

Later with Frickley Athletic, Hucknall Town, Bradford Park Avenue, Barrow, Grimsby Town, Scarborough, Stocksbridge Park Steels, Retford United, Sheffield FC, Alfreton Town, Lincoln United, Sutton Town, Belper Town, Buxton and Goole Town, he hit the headlines at the latter during January 2014.

Dismissed when captaining Goole against Coalville Town, Colley took exception to catcalls from visiting fans and on the anniversary of Eric Cantona lamping a Crystal Palace follower, leapt into the crowd and aimed punches at a fan.

The incident was caught on video and Goole immediately sacked him with an FA charge resulting in a fine and playing ban.

Colley made a playing return with Sheffield Sunday League side Hackenthorpe FC before a first managerial appointment at Shirebrook Town in October 2016.

By the following April however he'd left, continuing to turn out for Sunday League side High Noon FC.

Off the field, Karl was convicted on football-related charges three times between 2009 and 2011. He later became a support and recovery worker in Sheffield.

1992 Liam Alexander Henderson born, Ashington. (2009-12)

Midfielder who joined Newcastle's Academy at the age of 12 and made a reserve team debut from the bench against the smoggies at The Riverside in October 2009.

Stricken with injury problems, a belated return to fitness ahead of the 2012/13 season saw Hendo guest for both Celtic Nation and Blyth Spartans.

However, a reserve team friendly against Gateshead at the International Stadium in August 2012 proved to be his last game for United and he was later released.

Liam then began a tour of Northern League sides, appearing for Newcastle Benfield, South Shields, West Auckland Town, Newton Aycliffe and Jarrow Roofing.

NB: Liam Marc Henderson (born in Gateshead in 1989) also played in the Northern League, for Morpeth Town.

A bad day for the Magpies at Anfield, who took an early lead and quickly saw the hosts reduced to ten men when Fred Hopkin was unable to continue due to injury.

Having conceded an equaliser, a point looked on the cards until an innocuous late collision resulted in the dubious award of a free kick to the hosts. You can guess the rest.

Foulkes was duly picked to represent Wales for the first time the following Saturday, meaning that he missed United's home game against Chelsea.
