Internationals:
Goalden Gordon

Current Magpies receiving country calls:

Anthony Gordon, Dan Burn (England):
Tue 14.10.2025 Latvia (a) won 5-0 WCQ
Three points in Riga were enough to secure a place at the World Cup Finals for Thomas Tuchel's England side.

Anthony Gordon retained his place in the side and netted a solo opener, cutting in from the left side of the area before steering a low right footer into the far corner of the net.

Gordon was withdrawn on 71 minutes when the score was 4-0, club colleague Dan Burn introduced at that point.

Thu 09.10.2025 Wales (h) won 3-0 FR
A 90 minute shift for Gordon at Wembley, beginning on the left flank and finishing up in a  more central position. Fellow Magpie Burn remained unused on the bench, available to club and country despite scans confirming a broken hand.

Sandro Tonali (Italy):

Tue 14.10.2025 Israel (h) won 3-0 WCQ
Another long shift for Sandro as Israel were defeated in Udine, replaced in second half added time after collecting a yellow card.

Sat 11.10.2025 Estonia (a) won 1-3 WCQ
Victory for the Azzurri in Tallinn, with the Newcastle midfielder completing the entire game.

Bruno Guimaraes/Joelinton (Brazil):
Tue 14.10.2025 Japan (a) lost 2-3 FR
Another start for Bruno and a precise through ball to register an assist for his side's opening goal.

Joelinton was named on the bench in Tokyo, replacing his club colleague in the 57th minute with Brazil leading 2-1.

However the hosts hit back to preserve their home record, Joelinton squandering the chance to make it 3-3 in the closing seconds of normal time.

Fri 10.10.2025 South Korea (a) won 5-0 FR
A 79 minute shift in Seoul for Bruno, with his incisive through ball setting up the opening goal. Club colleague Joelinton was an unused substitute.

Leo Shahar (England U19s):
Tue 14.10.2025 Wales (n) won 7-0 FR
An emphatic victory in La Quinta, with full back Leo on the field for the first 67 minutes and withdrawn with his side leading 4-0.

Sat 11.10.2025 Belgium (n) won 4-1 FR
The Newcastle full back was introduced in the 67th minute of Saturday's victory in Marbella with the scoring complete.

Nick Woltemade (Germany):

Mon 13.10.2025 Northern Ireland (a) won 1-0 WCQ
A first international goal for the Newcastle striker gave his side victory in Belfast, converting a 31st minute corner kick from close range with his head and/or arm.

In doing so, Woltemade emulated fellow countryman Didi Hamann, whose only strike for Germany while a Magpie also came at Windsor Park back in 1999.

Big Nick was replaced in second half added time.

Fri 10.10.2025 Luxembourg (h) won 4-0 WCQ
A starting spot for the striker in Sinsheim but no maiden international goal in his 61 minutes of action.

Anthony Elanga (Sweden):

Mon 13.10.2025 Kosovo (h) lost 0-1 WCQ
Another disastrous night for the Swedes, whose chances of World Cup Final qualification are now almost over, following defeat in Gothenburg.

Elanga was introduced as a half time substitute while former Magpie Jon Dahl Tomasson was relieved of his position as Sweden coach hours after the loss.

Fri 10.10.2025 Switzerland (h) lost 0-2 WCQ
More woe for Sweden in Stockholm, with Elanga remaining unused on the bench.

Rory Finneran (Ireland U18s):
Mon 13.10.2025 Switzerland (n) drew 1-1 FR
Rory captained his side to a draw in Pinatar as Ireland concluded their preparations for next month's U17 World Cup Final tournament in Qatar.

Sat 11.10.2025 Poland (n) lost 0-2 FR
Defeat in Pinatar for the Irish youngsters with the United midfielder captaining the side and completing 90 minutes. Poor weather saw the game held back from the Friday.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Greece):
Sun 12.10.2025 Denmark (a) lost 1-3 WCQ
Defeat for the Greeks in Copenhagen with Vlachodimos returning to the starting line-up.

Thu 09.10.2025 Scotland (a) lost 1-3 Hampden WCQ
The goalkeeper was an unused substitute.

Alex Murphy (Ireland U21s):

Fri 10.10.2025 Slovakia (h) drew 2-2 ECQ
The United defender wasn't called into action in Cork.

Giveaway:
Scarf
compo winner

Following the success of matching buck
et and bobble hats, a Lee scarf has been added to the range of products on offer from Tyneside's own Football Bobbles.

Inspired by United's distinctive 1997/98 season change kit and echoing the current change ensemble, these are available online here
now.

(Anyone purchasing Lee scarves qualifies for reduced prices on Ferdinand scarves and Tino bobble hats - see link above for further details).

We had a Lee scarf to give away and asked what was distinctive about Rob Lee's UEFA Cup hat-trick at Royal Antwerp back in 1994.

Most folks knew that all three goals were headers and the winning entry came from Paul Johnson (the Bristol one).

Update:
The one where
Ross got hired....

Club statement, Saturday:

Newcastle United are delighted to announce the appointment of Ross Wilson as the club's Sporting Director.

Ross will be responsible for sporting strategy, development and recruitment across men's, women's and Academy teams, working closely with the club's football leadership and executive teams.

He joins from Nottingham Forest, where he served as Chief Football Officer, after Newcastle United triggered his release. The terms of his release will remain confidential between the clubs.

Prior to joining Forest in 2023, Ross was Sporting Director at Glasgow Rangers, helping them to their first league title for ten years, a Scottish Cup and a place in the UEFA Europa League final.

He said: "I'm absolutely delighted to be here at Newcastle United. This is such a special club, and I fully understand the passion, ambition and expectations of our incredible supporters, as well as the ambition and desire of our ownership to keep developing and building an even stronger Newcastle United.

"My conversations with ownership have been extremely positive, and I've also been in regular contact with Eddie Howe and David Hopkinson. The trust, cohesion and alignment we're building already feels strong, and we believe that being united as a team will be so important as we continue to move the club forward together.

"I'm excited to work with everyone across the different areas within our football department. There's already excellent work being done here and, from the first team to the women's team and academy, my aim is to build on that, strengthen our structures over time, and work with our staff to create environments where players and staff can continue to thrive."

David Hopkinson, Newcastle United's CEO, said: "I am delighted to welcome Ross to Newcastle United. His experience and expertise immediately strengthen us, and his appointment is another important step forward in our journey.

"Ross has a track record of delivering strategic change. He has instilled processes and built relationships that have helped his clubs to win and grow, and he has demonstrated his ability to enhance talent pathways and integrate women's football into the same high-performing culture.

"We are looking forward to working with him as we build towards our ambitions for long-term sustainable success."

The 41 year-old Falkirk native Wilson arrived at the City Ground in 2023 following Director of Football posts at Huddersfield Town, Southampton and Rangers.

The Magpies parted company with previous Sporting Director Paul Mitchell in June, less than a year after he had succeeded Dan Ashworth.

Premier League:
TV times awaited

Assuming that the Premier League follow their timetable, the December 2025 and January 2026 fixture alterations are due to be communicated on Wednesday of this week.

A total of 11 Newcastle games are "at risk" as follows:

Wed 03.12.2025 Spurs (h)
Sat 06.12.2025 Burnley (h)
Sat 13.12.2025 mackems (a)
Sat 20.12.2025 Chelsea (h)
Sat 27.12.2025 Manchester United (a)
Tue 30.12.2025 Burnley (a)

Sat 03.01.2026 Crystal Palace (h)
Wed 07.01.2026 Leeds United (h)
Sat 17.01.2026 Wolves (a)
Sat 24.01.2026 Aston Villa (h)*
Sat 31.01.2026 Liverpool (a)

No PL games were listed for
December 26th and January 1st when the original fixture announcement was made, but the PL confirm that their only "blackout" day is December 24th (and December 25th of course).

That means that some PL fixtures are liable to be played on both Boxing Day and New Years Day.

* Aston Villa's PL visit to SJP will move from Saturday January 24th due to their Europa League participation on Thursday January 22nd.

U21s:
Mansfield Town (a)

Wednesday sees Newcastle U21s return to action in the second of Three EFL Trophy Northern Group F stages ties.

Their opponents at the One Call Stadium in a 7.45pm kick-off are a Mansfield Town side managed by Nigel Clough who lost their opening tie 0-1 to Harrogate Town.

Newcastle are also currently pointless following a 2-6 defeat at Huddersfield Town.

Tickets are now on sale here priced £10 adults and £5 concessions. Free registration is required to purchase, with away fans housed in a section of the North Stand.

The game will be shown live on Sky Sports.

If ties are drawn after 90 minutes each team gets a point and a penalty shootout takes place for an extra point.

This will be United's third visit to what was formerly known as Field Mill in this competition, the Stags running out 6-3 winners in 2021 and registering a 3-0 success in 2024.

Referee: Matt Corlett.

2025/26:
Brighton (a)

Newcastle return to Premier League action on Saturday, when they head to the Amex Stadium - a venue where they are still to be victorious in the top flight.

Eight previous Premier League visits have ended in five draws and three home wins.

The Magpies are winless against the Seagulls in the most recent five league and cup meetings at home and away.

It's an old-fashioned 3pm start, with no live UK TV.

Team: Jacob Ramsey is expected to return to the squad, but Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento and Yoane Wissa remain unavailable. Lewis Miley is doubtful.

Fabian Schar remains one game away from a double century of Premier League appearances, while Joelinton has made 199 starts in all competitions for United to date. Dan Burn has made 149 league and cup starts for the club.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 17/10
The draw 12/5
BHAFC win 8/5

New customers receive a £20 bet when staking £5 (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

BHAFC:
Solly March, Adam Webster and Jack Hinshelwood remain out but Joel Veltman and Kaoru Mitoma both should return to the squad following injury.

Matt O'Riley is on loan at Marseille while Igor Julio has made a temporary switch to West Ham.

Fabian Hurzeler's side are unbeaten on home turf so far this season, drawing with Fulham (1-1) and Spurs (2-2) and defeating Manchester City (2-1). Adding in last season, Albion haven't lost at the Amex in seven PL outings.

SJP old boy James Milner made his 643rd Premier League appearance in Brighton's last PL fixture at Wolves. That leaves the 39 year-old ten behind record holder Gareth Barry, who played in 653 PL matches.

As a measure of his longevity, Milner played his very first PL game in the colours of Leeds United in November 2002, two days before current Magpie Tino Livramento was born.

Of a rather different vintage is ex-Magpie Yankuba Minteh, who scored in both of his appearances against United last season - once in the PL and once in the FA Cup.

Referee: Craig Pawson - second appointment this season involving Newcastle after the 0-0 draw at Aston Villa.

The South Yorkshire whistler took charge of last season's visit to Brighton, awarding United no less than three spot kicks, only one of which survived VAR scrutiny.

Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons, winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.

Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

2025/26 CL away tickets are €50 or less.

On This Day in History
14th October

Born Or Died:

1974 Carlos Alejandro Sierra Fumero born, Las Galletas, Spain. (1997)

Attacking midfielder who had a brief trial at SJP while with Real Madrid, travelling to a reserve game at Scarborough but then prevented from playing after a delay in receiving his international clearance.

Sandro did appear for United in a friendly at Morpeth Town, but although he scored twice, Kenny Dalglish opted not to pursue his interest in the player.

Later moves took him to Las Palmas, Malaga and Levante before a return to Malaga, later becoming Technical Director.

1979 Olivier Jimmy Wilfrid Bernard born, Paris, France. (2000-05, 2006-07)

Olly arrived in September 2000 on a free transfer from Olympique Lyonnais, signing a one year deal after Geordie scout Paul Montgomery advised Bobby Robson to take the French youth international on trial.

However, things quickly went awry as Lyon refused to release his registration, claiming that they were due a compensation fee for developing him in their academy, even though he never played in their first team.

Bernard was technically a free agent when he joined United, having seen his current Lyon deal expire. But with no resolution of the matter forthcoming between the two clubs and arbitration looming, the player was only able to turn out in friendly matches.

In one of those, a behind closed doors affair against Bolton Wanderers, Bernard sustained a knee injury which sidelined him until December 2000, when his return to fitness coincided with receipt of his registration.

A competitive debut came for the reserves against Liverpool at St. Helen's but after a handful of other second string outings, United opted to loan Olly out to Darlington, in order to gain more experience.

That seemed to wake him up and he returned with more focus, winning a new deal and making his first team debut for United in the Intertoto Cup the following season - also completing an English language course at the city's University.

Although preferring to play in midfield, the majority of Bernard's outings came at left back, including the memorable 2-2 draw away to Inter Milan in the Champions League.

That was only possible though after a spat with West Ham in 2002, who claimed that they had a pre-contract agreement in place with Bernard's agent, while negotiations over a new deal at SJP continued - Newcastle adamant that they had a one year option exercisable at their discretion.

Then-Hammers boss Glenn Roeder was forced to deny making an illegal approach, as the matter was referred to the Football League.

Newcastle's case was proved, but Bernard lodged an appeal - only for the Magpies to announce that they'd signed the player to a new deal, as news broke that the appeal had been dismissed.

2005 again saw contractual wrangles at SJP for Olly and this time there was to be no resolution, as he signed for Southampton on a short-term deal.

That summer saw him train with Birmingham City and Bolton Wanderers without agreeing a deal, before signing for Glasgow Rangers.

A year at Ibrox saw him fall from favour and undergo a physical change that saw him look radically slimmer, but seemingly lose much of his pace and body strength in the process.

12 months on and Bernard made a surprise return to Tyneside hours after the August 2006 transfer window closed.

However, his lack of fitness meant that he never played a first team game and the occasional reserve outing confirmed that something was terribly wrong - a fact confirmed when he announced his retirement at the age of 27, due to an arthritic hip.

2009 saw him back in the news, spotted playing for a 5-a-side team in a Tyneside league and making the local papers with plans to open a coffee shop in the city.

Managing a local Sunday team as part of his bid to gain coaching qualifications, Olly also contributed to the Tyneside-based "Show Racism The Red Card" initiative.

December 2013 then saw Bernard confirmed as the new owner of Northern League side Durham City, in addition to his local TV and media duties.

He also subsequently took over the Masons Arms pub in Blyth.

1997 Jack Hunter born, Newcastle.
(2014-18)

Midfielder who made his U18 bow for the Magpies as a substitute in a 2-1 home win over Bolton Wanderers in February 2014.

Jack made then debuted for the U21s from the bench in a 2-3 loss to West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns during May 2015.

A regular reserve starter in the following two seasons, Jack failed to win a contract and was released in June 2018, shortly after a trial at Barnsley.

He was soon back in football however, with National League Gateshead.

September 2019 saw Jack move on to fellow National League North side Blyth Spartans, but within a year he was back at Gateshead.

Signing for Halifax Town on a free transfer in July 2022, he left The Shay two years later to join Hartlepool United.

What the Athletic News called, "a fast, strenuous and exciting struggle" went the way of the visitors thanks to a late winner.

United led just before half time, after Billy Troughear's handball was punished with a penalty award that Bill McCracken blasted past goalkeeper Walter Scott.

The hosts levelled soon after the restart and a draw loomed before Scott came off his line but misjudged a cross and allowed Newcastle's Jack Scott to fire into the unguarded net.

1911 A 0-1 home defeat by Manchester United at Gigg Lane proved to be the final appearance of Billy Hibbert for Bury, with confirmation post-match that he was to join Newcastle for a club record fee.

Old boy Ernie Taylor played for an All Stars side weakened by several late withdrawals, alongside Newcastle boss Charlie Mitten and future Magpie Billy Day, the latter a Middlesbrough player at the time.

Also featuring for the visiting side was Roy Stephenson, a product of United's "N's" nursery side a decade earlier who failed to break into the Newcastle first team but did appear for Burnley, Rotherham United, Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City.

Sir Les then scored a cracker on his return to Loftus Road - outpacing close friend Danny Maddix to blast an unstoppable shot - before Dichio restored parity with another header.

Gillespie hit the winner soon after; walking the ball home after R's goalkeeper Juergen Sommer was left stranded by an over-hit back pass from defender Karl Ready.

Kevin Keegan's side held on for their sixth successive victory in all competitions and made it eight wins out of nine in the league.
