2025/26:
Nick flick eclipsed
by Danny double

Brighton  2  Newcastle  1

Newcastle experienced some all-too-familiar Falmer failings on Saturday, as their winless run in this part of Sussex deservedly lengthened to nine Premier League visits.

Once again unable to prevent Danny Welbeck from scoring against them, Eddie Howe's side belatedly came into the game and levelled thanks to Nick Woltemade's smart finish - their first away goal since Alexander Isak had propelled the ball into the same Amex Stadium net 437 minutes earlier.

However the green-clad Magpies were unable to hold on to what would have been their fourth successive draw on the road, 34-year old Welbeck hitting the winner once again - as he had in league and cup games on Tyneside last season.

Bruno Guimaraes almost gave an unchanged United side the lead in the sixth minute but narrowly put the ball wide and at the other end, Nick Pope denied Welbeck and Georginio Rutter as it remained goalless.

However, it was the Frenchman who supplied the pass for Welbeck to run onto and chip the ball over Pope four minutes before half-time.

Albion began by targeting Dan Burn at left back with ex-Magpie Yankuba Minteh but were able to wander through the middle of the visiting defence to set up the opener.

Emerging after the break without the anonymous Anthony Elanga and underwhelming Joelinton, United gradually improved and were denied a penalty after VAR check for a handball before Woltemade converted Lewis Miley's cross with an amazing flick to level in the 76th minute.

But after Burn made an excellent challenge on the edge of the box to deny Mats Wieffer eight minutes later, Welbeck swept the loose ball into the far corner of the net.

There were late chances and another strong handball appeal for United but no second equaliser. Their winless away run in the league now extends to a concerning seven games - their longest barren run on the road since 2021.

Defeat saw them drop one place to 12th position ahead of Sunday's fixtures.

Full match report to follow.

Pope, Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Burn, Guimaraes (Osula 86), Tonali (Ramsey 70), Joelinton (L.Miley 46), Elanga (J.Murphy 46), Woltemade, Gordon (Barnes 70).

BHAFC: Verbruggen, Wieffer, Dunk, van Hecke, Kadioglu, Baleba (Milner 71), Ayari, Minteh (Coppola 90), Rutter (Tzimas 71), Gomez (De Cuyper 36), Welbeck (Kostoulas 90).

The South Yorkshire whistler had taken charge of last season's visit to Brighton, awarding United three spot kicks - although only one survived VAR scrutiny.

VAR: Paul Tierney

Eddie Howe said:

"Yeah, tough tough result for us. Don’t think we played well for half an hour of that first half.

"We made a bright start to the first half and looked in a good place initially, then we fell away from that. We were loose on the ball in that first period and ended up being in transition an awful lot.

"I wasn't happy with the first half and I think it was a time to try and shake the team up, to try and get new energy onto the pitch.

"Different players with different qualities, and I thought the team benefited.

"I thought we'd actually made a bright start to the game and looked in a good place initially, but then we fell away from that and we were loose with the ball in that first period and ended up being in transition an awful lot.

"We didn't play with our normal clarity on the ball. Much better in the second half, much more like ourselves and in the end we're really disappointed to lose.

"We were much better with the changes in the second half, I thought it was a much brighter performance and much more like ourselves."

On Anthony Elanga:

"We need more from everybody. It is never about one player.

"Anthony (Elanga) is going to be a great player for this football club, I have no doubt about that.

"Some players need a little bit more time and extra support, something to happen positively to kick off, but he has all the attributes to do really well here. So I have no issues or worries about him.”

On the international break:

“Yeah of course
(travel) will affect individuals, I mean there’s no denying that. But it will be the same for Brighton, they’d have had players here, there and everywhere themselves.

On the unchanged line-up:

"If you're talking about Joelinton and Bruno, they would be the two (who had to play).

"Lewie Miley hadn't trained for two weeks and Jacob Ramsey is just back from a long lay-off himself, so they're difficult players to bring in themselves because they haven't been 100% match fit either.

"So we made the decision to go with the two lads that have done the travelling. Bruno had a much better second half than he did the first, so maybe that's not pure fatigue."

On the midfield:

"They are brilliant players but they didn't function well today but I don't think the team did.

"When we conceded the second goal, we were the dominant team. We responded really well in the second half. They didn't have many attacks in that spell but they did go and score."

On the lack of goals:

“That is a concern for us. We can’t rely on one individual. We have always historically been a team that scores a lot of goals from different areas.”

"We have never been reliant on any one player. Nick has done really well and we are delighted with him, but we want more from other areas. of the team.

"I thought there were chances there for us today. Especially the second half. I thought it was a good attacking display, albeit we weren’t clinical enough.”

On Nick Woltemade:

"There is a level of expectation there because we're signing a very good player. There's a lot to take on with a new league and a new lifestyle but he's taken that on very well."

On Brighton's winner:

"It's a big moment. We're chasing the winner. We feel we're the better team in that moment in the game and we're chasing the goal. We want to win games.

"Our midfield line gets penetrated and the ball ricochets to Welbeck. He finishes it very well but we're disappointed with the two goals conceded."

Stats:

Newcastle have now failed to beat Brighton in all six league and cup meetings home and away since May 2023.

Nick Woltemade nabbed his fourth Premier League goal of the season, out of a measly seven that his side have scored in their eight outings.

Dan Burn
made his 150th league and cup start for the club while Joelinton completed a double century of starts in all competitions.

SJP old boy James Milner made his 644th Premier League appearance. That leaves the 39 year-old nine behind record holder Gareth Barry, who played in 653 PL matches.

As a measure of his longevity, Milner played his very first PL game in the colours of Leeds United in November 2002, two days before current Magpie Tino Livramento was born.

Update
:
He's a 'keeper

Sky Sports reported on Friday that Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope had exercised the option in his contract for a further 12 months, keeping him at Gallowgate until 2027.

The 33 year-old has made 104 league and cup appearances since arriving from Burnley ahead of the 2022/23 season, keeping five clean sheets in the opening seven games of the current Premier League campaign.

Premier League:
TV times - derby day

Update: the Premier League blamed "complexities" for their failure to announce further fixture changes and say only that those games will be confirmed "as soon as possible."

Earlier: Wednesday saw the Premier League announce some changes to the December fixture list, with three Newcastle games rescheduled for TV as follows:

Tue 02.12.2025 Spurs (h) 8.15pm Sky
Sat 06.12.2025 Burnley (h) 3pm (no live TV)
Sun 14.12.2025 mackems (a) 2pm Sky
Sat 20.12.2025 Chelsea (h) 12.30pm TNT

Although fixtures up to the end of January were due on Wednesday, only those up to Mon 22.12.2025 appeared. There's no word on when the remainder will be released, leaving seven Newcastle games still subject to change:

Sat 27.12.2025 tbc Manchester United (a)
Tue 30.12.2025 tbc Burnley (a)

Sat 03.01.2026 tbc Crystal Palace (h)
Wed 07.01.2026 tbc Leeds United (h)
Sat 17.01.2026 tbc Wolves (a)
Sat 24.01.2026 tbc Aston Villa (h)*
Sat 31.01.2026 tbc Liverpool (a)

The initial fixture release in June didn't list any games on either
December 26th or January 1st, but the PL's only "blackout" days are December 24th and 25th.

On that basis, some PL fixtures are liable to be played on both Boxing Day and New Years Day.

* Aston Villa's visit to SJP will move from Sat 24.01.2026 due to their Europa League tie on Thu 22.01.2026.

Match report

PS: The Magpies are still in with a chance of finishing second and qualifying for the knockout stage.

However, Huddersfield Town and Mansfield Town meet in their final game on November 4th - a week before the Harrogate versus Newcastle fixture. Depending on the outcome of that, our game could be meaningless.

Internationals:
Wissa complication

Following the final round of World Cup qualifiers involving African nations this week, the four sides contesting the play-off tournament next month are now confirmed - and one of them is DR Congo.

Assuming he's fit by then, Newcastle's Yoane Wissa would be in contention for selection when The Leopards travel to Morocco during the November international break.

Semi-finals are set for November 13th when DR Congo play Cameroon, with the winners of that facing either Gabon or Nigeria three days later.

The winner of that then qualify for a further inter-confederation qualification tournament involving six teams in USA/Mexico during next March's international break.

NB: this is all over and above DR Congo's participation in the African Cup of Nations Final tournament, staged between December 21st and January 18th in Morocco.

Theoretically, players can be called up 14 days in advance, but it's anticipated this will be delayed until after Premier League fixtures on and around December 13th.

Whether that could be stretched further to include the Carabao Cup ties the following midweek remains to seen.

Scarf
compo winner

Following the success of matching bucket and bobble hats, a Lee scarf has been added to the range of products on offer from Tyneside's own Football Bobbles.

Inspired by United's distinctive 1997/98 season change kit and echoing the current change ensemble, these are available online here
now.

(Anyone purchasing Lee scarves qualifies for reduced prices on Ferdinand scarves and Tino bobble hats - see link above for further details).

We had a Lee scarf to give away and asked what was distinctive about Rob Lee's UEFA Cup hat-trick at Royal Antwerp back in 1994.

Most folks knew that all three goals were headers and the winning entry came from Paul Johnson (the Bristol one).

Belfast boy

Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons, winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.

Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

"Bill McCracken..." is available to direct from the publisher via their Amazon shop

United's third home game in a third different competition during a nine day period sees them receive Spurs in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday October 29th.

It's an 8pm kick-off, live on ITV1 and Sky Sports
and if the scores are level after 90 minutes, the tie will be settled by a penalty shootout.

The winners will take their place in the quarter final draw, which will be staged after the full time whistle.

While Newcastle enjoy home comforts for the third successive game, the visitors will complete a trio of away fixtures: trekking to Monaco in the Champions League, Everton in the Premier League and Newcastle.

Spurs will be back by 4,900 fans - the same away allocation that Bradford City received in the last round. On that basis expect temporary post-match closures of the walking route from the Leazes End to Barrack Road for home fans as was the case against the Bantams (confirmation awaited).

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

2025/26 CL away tickets are €50 or less.

On This Day in History
18th October

Born Or Died:

1991 Greg McDermott born, Liverpool.
(2008-12)

Central midfielder and younger brother of Neale - alongside whom he occasionally sat on United's first team bench next to dad Terry (and Kevin Keegan) during the 1990s.

Coming through the Academy ranks, Greg made his Reserve team bow from as a substitute in a 2-1 victory over the mackems at Eppleton in January 2009.

His first goal at that level then came away to Huddersfield the following September - in front of his dad, who was watching as part of his Terriers' assistant boss role.

Greg was released by United in Summer 2012 and had trials at Hartlepool United, Doncaster Rovers and Burton Albion.

However, a broken wrist sustained during a pre-season game for the Brewers in August of that year put McDermott's hopes of a deal with the League Two side on ice.

And having recovered from that blow, his second trial at Burton in October 2012 also ended prematurely when he picked up an injury after scoring during a reserve game against Grimsby Town.

Greg next popped up for a trial at Newcastle Jets in Australia, before spells at Stockport County and Bury, although he failed to appear at senior level for the Shakers.

By January 2014 he'd appeared on trial at Gateshead but again injury disrupted his hopes of gaining a permanent contract and he was sidelined by an ankle problem.

A further tryout with the Tynesiders was  more successful though, Greg agreeing a permanent contract at the International Stadium ahead of the 2014/15 season.

Making just one competitive appearance before being released, he later returned to take up a role at Newcastle's Academy, later moving on to assisting the first team.

The conversion of Jackie Milburn from right wing to centre of the attack took place here at Gigg Lane.

After the sale of Charlie Wayman to Southampton, Milburn took the number nine shirt and proceeded to score a hat-trick.

However, it was against stand-in 'keeper Harry Catterick, filling in for George Bradshaw who had broken his leg early in the game. Thems is the breaks....

1947 Meanwhile, the reserves were in action against their Aston Villa counterparts at SJP.

A 4-2 home win featured goals from Thomas Thompson, Albert Sibley, Andrew Donaldson and George Hair.

Ahead early on through a typical close range finish from Supermac, United were pegged back just on half time.

The Canaries had no answer to the home side's attacking threat after the break though, Alan Gowling quickly netting from an acute angle at the Leazes End.

Gowling headed another and Mac muscled his way through for 4-1 before Ted McDougall nodded home to reduce the arrears.

Newcastle had the last word though, Mac sprinting down the left and whipping over a low centre that David Jones slid deflected past his own 'keeper at the near post.

1976 One-time mackem Messiah Bob Stokoe was forced to resign as their manager, following abuse from disgruntled Rokerites who had seen their team fail to win in nine league games.

However, Stokoe's place in wearside affections was restored following his death in 2004, when a public collection raised £73K to erect a statue in his honour outside the stadium of plight.

"I fancy Liam O'Brien over the wall" said Lennie Lawrence, seconds before the Dubliner wrote his name across Geordie hearts and caused one almighty celebration on the Roker End among joyous United fans.

Gary Owers put through his own goal for the first, Gordon Armstrong equalised. Cue Liam, leaving Tim Carter flat-footed to give United a record-breaking 11th successive win.

United repeated the custom of the previous Fairs Cup era by wearing their away strip for this game - an Asics all blue affair.

Three goals to the good and with the crowd in jubilant mood, the team however allowed their concentration to slip and conceded two costly goals in the closing stages.

A certain local newspaper hack later blamed fans for their excessive celebrations and indulging in a Mexican wave that distracted the Newcastle players.

One of the few occasions the blue, green and orange away kit got an airing. A dreadful performance by United as goals from Ribeiro, Kewell, Wetherall and a Beresford own goal saw them well beaten.

Man of the Match for us was the-then Bolton player, Robbie Elliott, who limped into the away end on crutches to cheer the lads on.

A far from convincing win, but United rode their luck to claim three precious points that rocketed them seven places up the table, to 11th.

Shola netted the only goal of the game after being set up by Alan Shearer and Gary Speed, but at the other end Shay Given's display was as important in the victory.

This game provided a classic example of Al running down the clock by taking the ball to the corner flag, a tactic that provoked mild -mannered defender Gareth Southgate into a lunging tackle for which he was booked.

2004 Another awful display from the reserves at Kingston Park as they extended the goalless run to 425 minutes and seldom looked like breaking their duck against a Blackburn Rovers side who were little better.

Rovers won it when Jamal Johnson wandered round Titus Bramble to rifle home a shot from 15 yards past Tony Caig.

2005 Two first half goals from the home side meant that the reserves left Birmingham City empty-handed and with yet another name added to the club's sick list.

Aussie international defender Craig Moore's comeback after a three month absence saw him lasted only 45 minutes before limping from the field at St.Andrew's.

2008 United's U18 side recorded a 3-1 home victory over their Barnsley counterparts, thanks to a hat trick from Nile Ranger.

Some quotes from Mike Ashley akin to deranged world domination rantings of a James Bond film baddie appeared in the Sunday Times

"I have to put £20m a year into the club — I spend more than every other fan put together puts into the club each year. If you can’t pay up front to buy the club, you can’t afford it.

"Chris (Hughton) deserves a shot at the title — he has done a great job. But if I keep the club I will have the final say on players. I am the one who has to fund the club.

“Of course I regret it (buying the club). I never said I was an expert in football clubs. I tried my best. But I accept my best was woefully short.”

2011 Newcastle reserves beat Liverpool 3-2 at Whitley Park thanks to goals from Nile Ranger (2) and Michael Richardson.

Coach Willie Donachie took charge for the first time (although predecessor Peter Beardsley was in the home dugout) as the second string extended their unbeaten start to the season to five matches.

On a memorable afternoon at Gallowgate, Steve McClaren's side broke their duck in spectacular fashion and gave credence to the Head Coach's assertion that our season actually started here rather than in August.

Smiles replaced frowns in the stands and relieved fans saluted the whole side at full time - with particular praise afforded to four goal hero Gini Wijnaldum.
