Premier League:
Nick flick eclipsed
by Danny double

Brighton  2  Newcastle  1

Newcastle experienced some all-too-familiar Falmer failings on Saturday, as their winless run in this part of Sussex deservedly lengthened to nine Premier League visits.

Once again unable to prevent Danny Welbeck from scoring against them, Eddie Howe's side belatedly came into the game and levelled thanks to Nick Woltemade's smart finish - their first away goal since Alexander Isak had propelled the ball into the same Amex Stadium net 437 minutes earlier.

However the green-clad Magpies were unable to hold on to what would have been their fourth successive draw on the road, 34-year old Welbeck hitting the winner once again - as he had in league and cup games on Tyneside last season.

Bruno Guimaraes almost gave an unchanged United side the lead in the sixth minute but narrowly put the ball wide and at the other end, Nick Pope denied Welbeck and Georginio Rutter as it remained goalless.

However, it was the Frenchman who supplied the pass for Welbeck to run onto and chip the ball over Pope four minutes before half-time.

Albion began by targeting Dan Burn at left back with ex-Magpie Yankuba Minteh but were able to wander through the middle of the visiting defence to set up the opener.

Emerging after the break without the anonymous Anthony Elanga and underwhelming Joelinton, United gradually improved and were denied a penalty after VAR check for a handball before Woltemade converted Lewis Miley's cross with an amazing flick to level in the 76th minute.

But after Burn made an excellent challenge on the edge of the box to deny Mats Wieffer eight minutes later, Welbeck swept the loose ball into the far corner of the net.

There were late chances and another strong handball appeal for United but no second equaliser. Their winless away run in the league now extends to a concerning seven games - their longest barren run on the road since 2023.

Defeat saw them drop one place to 12th position; Aston Villa's victory at Spurs on Sunday then making that 13th.

Full match report to follow.

The South Yorkshire whistler had taken charge of last season's visit to Brighton, awarding United three spot kicks - although only one survived VAR scrutiny.

VAR: Paul Tierney

Eddie Howe said:

"Yeah, tough tough result for us. Don’t think we played well for half an hour of that first half.

"We made a bright start to the first half and looked in a good place initially, then we fell away from that. We were loose on the ball in that first period and ended up being in transition an awful lot.

"I wasn't happy with the first half and I think it was a time to try and shake the team up, to try and get new energy onto the pitch.

"Different players with different qualities, and I thought the team benefited.

"I thought we'd actually made a bright start to the game and looked in a good place initially, but then we fell away from that and we were loose with the ball in that first period and ended up being in transition an awful lot.

"We didn't play with our normal clarity on the ball. Much better in the second half, much more like ourselves and in the end we're really disappointed to lose.

"We were much better with the changes in the second half, I thought it was a much brighter performance and much more like ourselves."

On Anthony Elanga:

"We need more from everybody. It is never about one player.

"Anthony (Elanga) is going to be a great player for this football club, I have no doubt about that.

"Some players need a little bit more time and extra support, something to happen positively to kick off, but he has all the attributes to do really well here. So I have no issues or worries about him.”

On the international break:

“Yeah of course
(travel) will affect individuals, I mean there’s no denying that. But it will be the same for Brighton, they’d have had players here, there and everywhere themselves.

On the unchanged line-up:

"If you're talking about Joelinton and Bruno, they would be the two (who had to play).

"Lewie Miley hadn't trained for two weeks and Jacob Ramsey is just back from a long lay-off himself, so they're difficult players to bring in themselves because they haven't been 100% match fit either.

"So we made the decision to go with the two lads that have done the travelling. Bruno had a much better second half than he did the first, so maybe that's not pure fatigue."

On the midfield:

"They are brilliant players but they didn't function well today but I don't think the team did.

"When we conceded the second goal, we were the dominant team. We responded really well in the second half. They didn't have many attacks in that spell but they did go and score."

On the lack of goals:

“That is a concern for us. We can’t rely on one individual. We have always historically been a team that scores a lot of goals from different areas.”

"We have never been reliant on any one player. Nick has done really well and we are delighted with him, but we want more from other areas. of the team.

"I thought there were chances there for us today. Especially the second half. I thought it was a good attacking display, albeit we weren’t clinical enough.”

On Nick Woltemade:

"There is a level of expectation there because we're signing a very good player. There's a lot to take on with a new league and a new lifestyle but he's taken that on very well."

On Brighton's winner:

"It's a big moment. We're chasing the winner. We feel we're the better team in that moment in the game and we're chasing the goal. We want to win games.

"Our midfield line gets penetrated and the ball ricochets to Welbeck. He finishes it very well but we're disappointed with the two goals conceded."

Stats:

Newcastle have now failed to beat Brighton in all six league and cup meetings home and away since May 2023.

Nick Woltemade nabbed his fourth Premier League goal of the season, out of a measly seven that his side have scored in their eight outings.

That total equals fellow countryman Dietmar Hamann plus current colleagues Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn. Other members of the NUFC four PL goal club include Chris Wood, Andreas Andersson, Alex Mathie and Kevin Gallacher.

Dan Burn
made his 150th league and cup start for the club while Joelinton completed a double century of starts in all competitions.

SJP old boy James Milner made his 644th Premier League appearance. That leaves the 39 year-old nine behind record holder Gareth Barry, who played in 653 PL matches.

As a measure of his longevity, Milner played his very first PL game in the colours of Leeds United in November 2002, two days before current Magpie Tino Livramento was born.

37 year-old defender Nicolas Otamendi is no stranger to SJP as a result of his time with Manchester City.

Ahead of their trip to Tyneside, Benfica were in Cup action at second tier side GD Chaves on Friday night and won 2-0 with Greek striker Vangelis Pavlidis scoring both goals.

The Lisbon side remain pointless after their opening two CL league stage fixtures, a 2-3 home defeat by FK Qarabag and a 1-0 loss away to Chelsea.

They went through two qualifying rounds to reach this state of the competition, beating Nice 4-0 over two legs and Fenerbache 1-0 on aggregate.

Derby disaster

Newcastle's U18 side travelled to wearyside on Saturday morning for their first league local derby of the season and were two down after just ten minutes.

Armenian midfielder Finn Geragusian scored twice in four minutes to put the hosts two up before Marcus Neill's penalty in added time made it 0-3 at the interval.

The young Magpies got one back in the 65th minute through Alfie Hutchison but there was a further goal for the mackems in the 87th minute when Ivan Struk... struck.

NUFC have issued preliminary details for the upcoming Champions League visit to Marseille online here

Update:
He's a 'keeper

Sky Sports reported on Friday that Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope had exercised the option in his contract for a further 12 months, keeping him at Gallowgate until 2027.

The 33 year-old has made 104 league and cup appearances since arriving from Burnley ahead of the 2022/23 season, keeping five clean sheets in the opening seven games of the current Premier League campaign.

Premier League:
TV times - derby day

Earlier: Wednesday saw the Premier League announce some changes to the December fixture list, with three Newcastle games rescheduled for TV as follows:

Tue 02.12.2025 Spurs (h) 8.15pm Sky
Sat 06.12.2025 Burnley (h) 3pm (no live TV)
Sun 14.12.2025 mackems (a) 2pm Sky
Sat 20.12.2025 Chelsea (h) 12.30pm TNT

Although fixtures up to the end of January were due on Wednesday, only those up to Mon 22.12.2025 appeared. There's no word on when the remainder will be released, leaving seven Newcastle games still subject to change:

Sat 27.12.2025 tbc Manchester United (a)
Tue 30.12.2025 tbc Burnley (a)

Sat 03.01.2026 tbc Crystal Palace (h)
Wed 07.01.2026 tbc Leeds United (h)
Sat 17.01.2026 tbc Wolves (a)
Sat 24.01.2026 tbc Aston Villa (h)*
Sat 31.01.2026 tbc Liverpool (a)

The initial fixture release in June didn't list any games on either December 26th or January 1st, but the PL's only "blackout" days are December 24th and 25th.

On that basis, some PL fixtures are liable to be played on both Boxing Day and New Years Day.

* Aston Villa's visit to SJP will move from Sat 24.01.2026 due to their Europa League tie on Thu 22.01.2026.

Match action

Match report

PS: The Magpies are still in with a chance of finishing second in their group and qualifying for the knockout stage of the EFL Trophy.

However, Huddersfield Town and Mansfield Town meet in their final game on November 4th - a week before the Harrogate versus Newcastle fixture. Depending on the outcome of that, our game could be meaningless.

Internationals:
Wissa complication

Following the final round of World Cup qualifiers involving African nations, the four sides contesting the play-off tournament are now confirmed - including DR Congo.

Assuming he's fit by then, Newcastle's Yoane Wissa would be in contention for selection when The Leopards travel to Morocco during the November international break.

Semi-finals are set for November 13th when DR Congo play Cameroon, with the winners of that facing either Gabon or Nigeria three days later.

The winner of that then qualify for a further inter-confederation qualification tournament involving six teams in USA/Mexico during next March's international break.

NB: this is all over and above DR Congo's participation in the African Cup of Nations Final tournament, staged between December 21st and January 18th in Morocco.

Theoretically, players can be called up 14 days in advance, but it's anticipated this will be delayed until after Premier League fixtures on and around December 13th.

Whether that could be stretched further to include the Carabao Cup ties the following midweek remains to seen.

Giveaway:
Scarf compo winner

Following the success of matching bucket and bobble hats, a Lee scarf has been added to the range of products on offer from Tyneside's own Football Bobbles.

Inspired by United's distinctive 1997/98 season change kit and echoing the current change ensemble, these are available online here
now.

(Anyone purchasing Lee scarves qualifies for reduced prices on Ferdinand scarves and Tino bobble hats - see link above for further details).

We had a Lee scarf to give away and asked what was distinctive about Rob Lee's UEFA Cup hat-trick at Royal Antwerp back in 1994.

Most folks knew that all three goals were headers and the winning entry came from Paul Johnson (the Bristol one).

Belfast boy

Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons, winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.

Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

United's third home game in a third different competition during a nine day period sees them receive Spurs in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday October 29th.

It's an 8pm kick-off, live on ITV1 and Sky Sports and if the scores are level after 90 minutes, the tie will be settled by a penalty shootout.

The winners will take their place in the quarter final draw, which will be staged after the full time whistle.

While Newcastle enjoy home comforts for the third successive game, the visitors will complete a trio of away fixtures: trekking to Monaco in the Champions League, Everton in the Premier League and Newcastle.

Spurs will be back by 4,900 fans - the same away allocation that Bradford City received in the last round. On that basis expect temporary post-match closures of the walking route from the Leazes End to Barrack Road for home fans as was the case against the Bantams (confirmation awaited).

Entering at the Third Round stage due to their European involvement like Newcastle, Spurs made it to the last 16 thanks to a routine 3-0 home win over Doncaster Rovers.

The two sides last faced each other in pre-season, a Harvey Barnes goal giving United a 1-1 draw in the South Korean capital, Seoul on the night that Son Heung-Min ended his decade-long association with the Cockerels.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

2025/26 CL away tickets are €50 or less.

On This Day in History
19th October

Born Or Died:

1892 John Finlay born, Riccarton, Scotland. (1909-27)

A £775 signing from Airdrieonians, "Jock" began a lifelong association with Newcastle when debuting as a 16 year old away to Blackburn Rovers in September 1909.

Making the left half position his own, Finlay's final first team appearance came in April 1924, but he remained on the United coaching staff for a further six years.

Jock died in March 1933 and was cremated, requesting that his ashes be scattered from Scafell Pike in the Lake District.

1924 Jeremiah Lowery born, Newcastle.
(1947-52)

Goalkeeper who signed for Newcastle from the local Parsons works side and made his senior Magpies debut in a 2-1 away win against Huddersfield Town in April 1950.

Retaining his place for the remaining four games due to the unavailability of first -choice custodian Jack Fairbrother, Jerry would manage just one further game, a 6-0 home win over Stoke City in August 1951.

Moving to Lincoln City in February 1952 at a cost of £750, Lowery was a regular starter at Sincil Bank before joining non-league Peterborough United two years later.

Later spells at Barrow, Crewe Alexandra & Wisbech Town followed and Jerry remained in East Anglia, working with disabled people.

He was living in Peterborough at the time of his death in September 2007.

1954 Sam Allardyce born, Dudley, West Midlands. (Manager, 2007-08)

As a player: Bolton, mackems, Millwall, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Coventry, Huddersfield, Bolton, Preston North End, West Bromwich Albion, Limerick, Preston North End.

As a manager: Limerick, Blackpool, Notts County, Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham, mackems, England, Crystal Palace, Everton, West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United.

Appointed as Magpies boss in succession to Glenn Roeder by then-Chairman Freddy Shepherd in May 2007 (claiming on arrival that he'd turned down the job in 2005),  "Big Sam" arrived to find that Mike Ashley had completed his takeover of the club.

However, he still received backing to overhaul the squad, spending over £20m to bring in Mark Viduka, Alan Smith, Habib Beye, David Rozehnal, Jose Enrique, Joey Barton, Geremi, Cacapa & Abdoulaye Faye.

A 3-1 opening day success at his old Reebok Stadium stamping ground began a five game unbeaten run in all competitions that ended with a 1-0 loss at Derby County.

Continuing problems away from home were to dog Allardyce and it took until December to register a clean sheet on the road - in a miserable 1-0 victory at Fulham.

For many fans though, the brand of football Allardyce tried to impose on the side wasn't worth watching - and his habit of laying the blame at anyone but himself grew tedious.

Sam achieved the worst of both worlds: a team unexciting to watch and defensively unsound. In the final analysis, those players whom he brought to the club let him down - on and off the field.

Mike Ashley had looked at dumping Allardyce before the season began but was persuaded to give him a chance.

The owner's habit of watching away matches with the travelling support then gave him first-hand experience of the discontent - notably at Wigan on Boxing Day, when fans chanted "we're sh*t and we're sick of it."

And after a 0-0 draw in appalling conditions at Championship side Stoke City in the FA Cup, Ashley wielded the axe, installing Kevin Keegan on the day that the Potters visited Tyneside in the replay.

Receiving a claimed £4m payoff (and buying a plush Spanish Villa that he named Casa St. James') Sam returned to management in December of that year, at Blackburn.

The victim of another club takeover when sacked by Ewood incomers The Venky's Group in December 2010, Allardyce then took charge of newly-relegated West Ham in June 2011, managing to sneak them back in to the Premier League via the playoffs.

Successfully keeping the Hammers in the Premier League over the next three seasons, he guided them to 10th, 13th and 12th place finishes before departing from the Boleyn Ground in summer 2015.

Allardyce was soon back in management though, joining the mackems that October and keeping them up - at our expense.

Rewarded with the role of England Head Coach following Roy Hodgson's departure, he signed a two year deal in July 2016.

However, Sam's reign lasted just one game and 67 days, before falling victim to a newspaper sting - a hidden camera catching him making claims about players and agents that went against FA regulations.

Leaving his post "by mutual consent", he also benefited from an undisclosed but substantial payoff from the FA.

The managerial merry-go-round then saw Allardyce replace Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace in December 2016 and he successfully kept them in the Premier League before departing at the end of that season.

Next came a stint at Goodison Park between November 2017 and May 2018 during whuch he took the Toffees from the relegation zone to eighth, but remained an unpopular figure - leaving with another bag of cash in lieu of the remaining 18 months of his contract.

West Bromwich Albion appointed Allardyce in December 2020 after sacking Slaven Bilic but he was unable to keep them in the Premier League and he lost his record of never managing a relegated side,

That record was doubled when Allardyce was appointed manager of Leeds United for the final four games of the 2022/23 season. That included a 2-2 home draw with Newcastle, but defeat in the other three saw Leeds relegated.

Sam - or his agent at least - was reportedly offered the chance to return to SJP in July 2019 following the departure of Rafa Benitez, but turned it down.

1961 Phil Leaver born, Wirksworth, Derbyshire. (1977-82)

Defender who moved from his native East Midlands to Tyneside as a youngster and attended Kenton School.

Phil came through United's junior and reserve ranks, but had the misfortune to be called up for senior service at a low ebb in our history.

Having just been handed a professional deal, defender Leaver played alongside Stuart Boam in a 3-2 League Cup home win over Bury during August 1980.

Within hours Bill McGarry had been sacked as and Joe Harvey installed as caretaker boss, leaving Phil back in the reserves.

Arthur Cox then preferred to field the likes of Kenny Mitchell, Bruce Halliday and Peter Haddock in his defence and Leaver left.

A later career in the non-league saw him play for Whitley Bay, Newcastle Blue Star, North Shields, Washington, Blyth Spartans and Durham City, also coaching at Consett.

Away from football, Phil entered the teaching profession and taught Geography at Excelsior Academy in the West End of the city.

1977 Habib Beye born, Suresnes, France.
(2007-09)

United fans had a first glimpse of their future right back when the French-born Senegal international appeared at SJP for Marseille in a UEFA Cup Semi Final in 2004.

August 2007 saw the, former Paris SG and Strasbourg player make a £2m switch from the Velodrome to Gallowgate, debuting the following month in a defeat at Derby.

Soon becoming a crowd favourite for both his defensive quality and forward forays, a version of the "Happy Days" theme tune in his honour grew in popularity.

The only goal of Beye's United career came at SJP in December 2007, as he pushed forward in added time and won a corner at the Gallowgate End, nodding home Emre's flag kick amid scenes of great celebration.

Returning from international duty at the African Nations Cup to find that he had a new manager, Habib played a valuable role in the late season resurgence under KK.

Beye's second season saw him red-carded in the home draw with Manchester City (a decision later overturned) before a savage tackle from Lee Cattermole at Wigan on Boxing Day sidelined him for 12 games - yet another blow to our hopes of staying up.

A comeback came at home to Arsenal in March 2009, but soon after appearing from the bench to replace the ailing Sebastien Bassong, an injury to Steven Taylor forced Beye into central defence.

What proved to be Beye's final game for the club was the 1-0 home defeat by Fulham, with a hamstring injury ruling him out of the final day trip to Aston Villa - although he made himself available, only for Alan Shearer to omit him on medical advice.

Name-checked by Shearer as part of his rebuilt side, the failure of United to appoint the interim boss permanently say Habib opt not to drop into the Championship.

A late decision not to join Hull City saw him opt instead to sign for Aston Villa for £2m at the start of what was the third and final year of his SJP deal in 2009

However, first team opportunities were limited under manager Martin O'Neill; Beye's return to SJP coming as a substitute during Villa's 0-6 loss at SJP in 2010 by which time caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald was in charge.

By his 34th birthday, Beye had still only made nine senior appearances for Villa and a few months later his contract was cancelled by mutual consent.

By this time he was on loan at Doncaster Rovers as part of a "shop window" scheme for "big name" players. He signed an 18-month contract with Rovers in February 2012.

However, relegation from the Championship soon saw that deal scrapped and Beye departed.

He subsequently worked as a pundit for a French TV channel before returning to football as coach with Red Star Paris.

January 2025 then saw Habib take charge of Rennes.

1989 Mark Doninger born, Gosforth.
(2004-09)

Central midfielder who broke into the Magpies U18 side at the tail end of the 2004/05 season, scoring his first goals in a 2-1 home win over Leeds in March 2005.

A reserve debut came in a 4-3 victory against Manchester City at Kingston Park in September 2006 and he netted for the first time at that level in the return fixture.

August 2007 then saw Mark called into the first team squad by Sam Allardyce for a pre- season game at Hull, getting on for the final 25 minutes as a youthful Magpies side lost 1-0 at the KC Stadium.

Despite captaining the reserve side in the 2008/09 season and finishing as top scorer with twelve goals, no contract offer was forthcoming and Mark left United - signing off with a goal in the 4-0 Northumberland Senior Cup success over Ashington at SJP.

Going on trial for Darlington and Durham City, Doninger joined Blyth Spartans and later had trials at Derby County, Hartlepool United, Grimsby Town and Burton Albion.

His career then took him to Sligo Rovers (Ireland), IA Akranes (Iceland), Stjarnan (Iceland), Bedlington Terriers,
Shildon, Perth Soccer Club (Australia), Valdres FK (Norway), Morpeth Town, Newcastle Benfield, West Auckland, Whickham and New Fordley.

2009 Chris Hughton was offered the role of Newcastle's first team boss. Hughton said:

"I am honoured to be offered the job, we are still in negotiations, it is something we hope will get resolved.

"I've always felt that the manager's situation was an issue, but not the most important one. Getting results has been the most important thing.

"Once we have got Scunthorpe and Doncaster out of the way, we will have discussions with Derek Llambias."

Coming the day after quotes emerged from Mike Ashley about the one off opportunity Barry Moat had to buy NUFC, this suggested that to all and intents and purposes, we were no longer for sale. Again.

Paul Dummett's first senior Toon goal gave ten man United a surprise lead until Suarez and Daniel Sturridge combined to level.

That ultimately consigned United to a first home loss in 13 league and cup games.
