Leeds United U17s  0  Newcastle U17s  2

Wednesday saw Newcastle U17s complete their group stage fixtures in this season's Premier League Cup, victory at Thorp Arch giving them three wins from as many games.

Mason Miley shot his side ahead with a first-time effort from inside the centre circle. Substitute Alfie Seldon then set up Alfie Hutchison for the clinching second goal; an excellent defensive performance resulting in a clean sheet.

Team: Dowell, Patterson, Moran, Old, Durrant, Goodbrand, M.Miley, Gilligan, Pinnington, Hutchison, Ferreira.

Earlier in the group stage, the youngsters won 2-1 at Boro, thanks to late goals from Hutchison and Seldon.

A 5-3 home conquest of the mackems followed, Seldon's brace adding to Jake Durrant's opener and two from Jack Patterson.

This is the second successive season that Newcastle have reached the last eight of this competition, exiting at the hands of Manchester United in 2024.

Also through to the quarter finals are Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City, Liverpool, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion, with the other two group winners known when the final fixtures take place next week.

Update:
Sandro signs on

Wednesday brought media reports that the Sandro Tonali contract extension said to have been a priority for new Sporting Director Ross Wilson was in fact done and dusted while one of his predecessors was still in post.

The 25 year-old Italian midfielder signed a five year deal following his capture from AC Milan in 2023 and is now revealed to have put pen to paper on an extension while serving his suspension for breaking betting regulations.

Tonali is now said to be under contract at SJP until 2029, with a further 12 month extension exercisable at the club's discretion - negotiations for both completed before Dan Ashworth left the Magpies in early 2024.

Carabao Cup:
Spurs (h) tickets

FAO ST holders on the Carabao Cup scheme wondering why they haven't received an email with a ticket download for next Wednesday's home tie against Spurs - and cannot download their ticket when accessing the club website.

Buried in the payment reminder emails sent out by the club in early October but not received by everyone was the following line:

"Tickets for this fixture will be uploaded onto your season pass."

In other words, no action is necessary and access against Spurs next week will be obtained by scanning season tickets as if it were a Premier League home game.

This is a change to the ticketing system, differing from the previous home cup ties versus Barcelona, Bradford City and Benfica and the upcoming one against Bilbao, when individual tickets were issued.

Carabao Cup scheme members whose initial payment failed or who were relocated from their usual seat for the Spurs game should have received an individual ticket.

All ticket queries: [email protected]

PS: The latest Fan Advisory Board minutes include the following line, suggesting that this change is permanent:

"For future domestic cup fixtures, tickets will be uploaded directly to season cards."

Beaten at Benton

Newcastle U19s  1  Benfica U19s  5

United's youngsters remain pointless after three games in this season's U19 Youth League, outwitted by their Portuguese counterparts at Whitley Park on Tuesday.

The visitors were first to show with a few rangefinder shots that flew over George Mair's goal, before Kacey Wooster tested Benfica custodian Diogo Ferreira on 19 minutes.

That began a period of United pressure; Leo Shahar firing across the face of goal moments later and Wooster trying his luck again but seeing a 25th minute effort blocked.

The opener went the way of Benfica 10 minutes before the interval, Eduardo Fernandes turning in the box before wrong-footing Mair with a low shot.

What proved to be a pivotal passage of play saw United attack from the first whistle after the break, Neave just failing to force his shot under Ferreira within 10 seconds.

A debatable penalty gave Benfica the chance to double their lead on 53 minutes after Jose Neto threw himself to the floor after contact from Shahar - only for Mair to guess correctly and deny Goncalo Moreira from 12 yards.

Reality swiftly intervened though within four minutes, as a Fernandes shot from distance was beaten out by Mair but snapped up by Franciso Silva for an easy finish.

Only a vital block by Logan Watts then prevented a third Portuguese goal just after the hour but a frantic period of play in the 67th minute ended with the United defender helping a Fernandes shot into his own net.

Strong running from United's main attacking threat Neave created a shooting opportunity on 75 minutes, but he was foiled again before a mazy run across the box from the impressive Moreira ended with him firing in via a post.

The black and whites did grab a consolation goal when substitute Joe Brayson finished well two minutes from the end of normal time, only for Fernandes to round off his hat-trick from close range during time added on.

Team: Mair, Shahar, Charlton, Johnson, Watts, Munda, Bailey (Finneran 61), Alabi (Waddani 71), Neave (Yildiz 86), Park (Seldon 61), Wooster (Brayson 61).
Subs n/u: Dowell, Moran, Goodbrand, Bloomer.

Booked: Neave, Shahar, Charlton

Crowd: 426

Referee: Lothar D'hondt, who had a rather quieter shift than on Friday, when he stopped the Belgian League game between Standard Liege and Antwerp in the 88th minute, after cup was thrown at him by a supporter.

Premier League:
TV times (incomplete)

October 15th saw the Premier League announce some changes to the December fixture list, with three Newcastle games rescheduled for TV as follows:

Tue 02.12.2025 Spurs (h) 8.15pm Sky
Sat 06.12.2025 Burnley (h) 3pm (no live TV)
Sun 14.12.2025 mackems (a) 2pm Sky
Sat 20.12.2025 Chelsea (h) 12.30pm TNT

Although fixtures up to the end of January were due that day, only those up to Mon 22.12.2025 actually appeared.

There's no word on when the remainder will be released, leaving seven Newcastle games still subject to change:

Sat 27.12.2025 tbc Manchester United (a)
Tue 30.12.2025 tbc Burnley (a)

Sat 03.01.2026 tbc Crystal Palace (h)
Wed 07.01.2026 tbc Leeds United (h)
Sat 17.01.2026 tbc Wolves (a)
Sat 24.01.2026 tbc Aston Villa (h)*
Sat 31.01.2026 tbc Liverpool (a)

The initial fixture release in June didn't list any games on either December 26th or January 1st, but the PL's only "blackout" days are December 24th and 25th.

On that basis, some PL fixtures are liable to be played on both Boxing Day and New Years Day.

* Aston Villa's visit to SJP will move from Sat 24.01.2026 due to their Europa League tie on Thu 22.01.2026.

Internationals:
Wissa complication

Following the final round of World Cup qualifiers involving African nations, the four sides contesting the play-off tournament are now confirmed - including DR Congo.

Assuming he's fit by then, Newcastle's Yoane Wissa would be in contention for selection when The Leopards travel to Morocco during the November international break.

Semi-finals are set for November 13th when DR Congo play Cameroon, with the winners of that facing either Gabon or Nigeria three days later.

The winners of that qualify for a further inter-confederation qualification tournament involving six teams in USA/Mexico, staged during next March's international break.

NB: this is all over and above DR Congo's participation in the African Cup of Nations Final tournament, staged between December 21st and January 18th in Morocco.

Theoretically, players can be called up 14 days in advance, but it's anticipated this will be delayed until after Premier League fixtures on and around December 13th.

Whether that could be stretched further to include Carabao Cup ties the following midweek remains to seen.

Book:
Belfast boy

Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons, winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.

Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

Carabao Cup:
Spurs (h)

United's third home game in a third different competition during a nine day period sees them receive Spurs in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

It's an 8pm kick-off, live on ITV1 and Sky Sports and if the scores are level after 90 minutes, the tie will be settled by a penalty shootout.

The winners will take their place in the quarter final draw, which will be staged after the full time whistle.

While Newcastle enjoy home comforts for the third successive game, the visitors complete a trio of away fixtures: drawing 0-0 in Monaco in the Champions League on Thursday and visiting Everton in the Premier League on Sundsay before heading to the North East.

Spurs will be backed by 4,900 fans - the same allocation that Bradford City received in the last round. On that basis expect temporary post-match closures of the walking route from the Leazes End onto Barrack Road for home fans, as was the case against the Bantams.

Fourth Round ties:

Tue 28.10.2025:

Wycombe Wanderers v Fulham (7.45pm)
Wrexham v Cardiff City (8pm)

Wed 29.10.2025:

Entering at the Third Round stage due to their European involvement like Newcastle, Spurs made it to the last 16 thanks to a routine 3-0 home win over Doncaster Rovers.

The two sides last faced each other in pre-season, a Harvey Barnes goal giving United a 1-1 draw in the South Korean capital, Seoul on the night that Son Heung-Min ended his decade-long association with the Cockerels.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

On This Day in History
24th October

Born Or Died:

1905 Robert Thomson born, Falkirk, Scotland. (1928-34)

Defender who learnt his trade for various teams in his hometown before joining the mackems at a cost of £5,000 in 1927.

After barely 18 months at Roker Park though, Bob made the switch to United - fellow Scot Bob McKay going the other way.

Making his debut in a 3-2 home win over Leeds in October 1928, Thomson competed for the left back spot with Dave Fairhurst, playing his final first team game in a 2-0 derby defeat at Roker Park in March 1934.

Later spells at Hull City and French side Racing Club Paris followed, before Bob joined Ipswich Town in 1936.

A broken leg forced him into retirement the following year, but he remained at Portman Road until 1950 on their coaching staff.

1963 John Grattan Hendrie born, Lennoxtown, Scotland. (1988-89)

Winger/forward signed from Bradford City at a cost of 500K in the summer of 1988, as Magpies boss Willie McFaul attempted to fashion a new-look side.

Beginning his career as an apprentice with Coventy City, John moved out on loan to Hereford United in 1983 after falling out with new Highfield Road boss Bobby Gould.

A free transfer in 1984 saw him move to the Bantams and his form attracted a number of scouts to Valley Parade including United's.

Making his debut in the season-opening 0-4 loss at Everton, John's next Merseyside visit was rather more enjoyable - scoring in a 2-1 victory at Anfield the following October.

That win wasn't enough to save McFaul's job though and Hendrie's next goals came when he netted both in a 2-1 home win over Wimbledon in December - giving new boss Jim Smith a winning start to life at SJP.

A return to Coventry in February 1989 saw John net against his old club in a 2-1 success, but relegation still followed and he was shipped out to Leeds for 600K.

The fixture list then paired the two clubs in the opening game of the following season, but John's return to SJP was overshadowed by a four goal salvo from new Magpies signing Mick Quinn, in a 5-2 victory (signed from Pompey with the Hendrie money).

For a third successive summer, 1990 saw John on the move again, as he joined the smoggies - remaining there for six years and appearing against United various times.

His final club was Barnsley and at the age of 34, he returned to haunt his former side one more time, slamming home a fine effort to earn the Tykes a 2-2 draw at Oakwell with Newcastle in December 1997.

Barnsley were relegated that season and Hendrie took over from Danny Wilson as their manager, but last less than a year before being relieved of his duties.

Since then Hendrie has worked as a football pundit and summariser for both radio and TV, joining Yorkshire law firm Last Cawthra Feather as a sports law consultant in 2007.

Based in their Bradford office, John worked alongside another ex-Magpie - Jim Pearson.

1988 Robert Cavener born, North Shields.
(2004-07)

Central midfielder who captained United's U18 side during their run to the FA Youth Cup semi-finals in the 2006/07 season.

A reserve team debut came as substitute in a 2-0 home victory over Wolves at Kingston Park in April 2005 and he was to appear at various points in the following two seasons.

Failing to win a professional contract in 2007, Rob secured a four year college  scholarship at Central Connecticut State University in the USA, where he played for their Blue Devils soccer side.

Returning to the North-East, he studied for his Masters Degree at Northumbria University while playing for Team Northumbria.

Cavener subsequently relocated to the USA and worked in finance, living in Hartford, Connecticut.

1986 John Ruddy born, St. Ives.
(2024-present)

Following the unexpected acquisition of Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos in July 2024, eyebrows were further raised when Newcastle signed free agent custodian Ruddy hours later.

The 37 year-old had left Birmingham City after two years at St.Andrew's, having racked up 550 appearances over a 20 year career - almost half with Norwich City.

Winning one senior England cap against Italy in 2012, Ruddy came to Gallowgate as Loris Karius exited - but by the end of the transfer window the club's squad included no less than five 'keepers (messrs Pope, Dubravka, Vlachodimos, Ruddy and Gillespie).

Ostensibly signed on a 12 month contract for training and mentor duties, John's first outing as a Magpie came late on in a 4-0 home friendly win over Girona that August.

He was then named on the bench as cover for Nick Pope in United's second Premier League game that season, at Bournemouth.

Retained for a further year and getting pre-season pitch time against Carlisle and Arsenal, the departure of Martin Dubravka and arrival of Aaron Ramsdale left Ruddy's status unchanged, part of the warm-up ahead of competitive senior games but without taking a place on the bench.

1989 Jack Colback born, Killingworth.
(2014-20)

June 2014 saw Newcastle complete the free transfer signing of midfielder Colback, after he became a free agent following the expiry of his contract with the mackems.

A product of Cramlington Juniors, Jack first linked up with the red and whites aged 10 and played over 100 times for the mackems
following a debut in May 2010 that saw him dismissed after just 12 minutes on the field.

That followed a loan switch
to Ipswich Town for the England U20 international that saw him score five times and play at SJP as United lifted the Championship trophy.

A second loan spell at Portman Road in the 2010/11 season followed before Jack was integrated into the mackem senior side.

Scoring at Gallowgate in a 0-3 derby loss in February 2014, within four months
Colback became the first senior player to move from wear to Tyne since Paul Bracewell in 1992, Lionel Perez switching in 1998 but never playing competitively for the Magpies.

First sighted in a Newcastle shirt at Oldham in pre-season, Jack's debut came in the season-opening home loss to Manchester City, along with fellow new boys Daryl Janmaat, Remy Cabella, Emmanuel Riviere, Rolando Aarons and Ayoze Perez.

After just three competitive games for his new club, Jack was called up to the England senior squad for the first time - only to then withdraw with a calf problem.

Despite picking up 12 bookings and the subsequent suspensions, his first season was a good one, including four memorable strikes - all at St. James' Park.

The following season saw his form slump though, coinciding with relegation to the Championship and featuring 11 yellow cards.

Remaining a regular performer in the second tier, Newcastle's promotion saw Jack begin pre-season in the side but soon fade from the picture.

Amid claims of a training ground argument with Rafa Benitez, the midfielder was made available for transfer and linked with both Wolves and Aston Villa.

No move followed however and Colback was omitted from Newcastle's 25 man squad, excluded from the team photo and made to train with the reserves.

The January 2018 transfer window saw Jack loaned to Nottingham Forest, debuting in the Championship against a Fulham side featuring fellow loanee Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Colback stayed on loan at the City Ground in 2018/19 and seemed to have effectively ended his time at SJP, only for the arrival of Steve Bruce to seem him recalled to feature in a handful pre-season games.

However he failed to win a place in United's PL squad and remained at the club despite claims of another loan exit.

Eventually leaving on a free in August 2020 he rejoined Forest, helping them gain promotion to the Premier League in 2022.

Jack was in the Forest side for their first PL game this century at SJP in August 2022, but looked way off the pace in a 0-2 loss and was released the following summer.

A Championship return came in August 2023, signing a two year deal at QPR.

The 2025/26 season began with Colback clubless - although yet to confirm his retirement - and studying for his UEFA B coaching licence.

1992 Patrick Nzuzi born, Lubumbashi, DR Congo. (2005-12)

Right-sided defender/midfielder who joined United's academy from Wallsend Boys Club at the age of 13 - having moved to the region from his home country in 2003.

Debuting for Newcastle's U18 side in April 2009, Nzuzi netted on his debut in a 2-2 home draw with Sheffield United.

He was then handed a first reserve outing by coach Alan Thompson in a 2-4 loss to Rotherham United in October 2009.

Featuring for both the Academy and Reserve sides in the opening weeks of the following season, Patrick celebrated his 18th birthday recovering from surgery to cure a hernia problem that had troubled him for a year.

Released in Summer 2012, Nzuzi had trials at Derby County, Celtic Nation and Blyth Spartans before joining Irish side Limerick.

Following a brief (one game) switch to Sligo Rovers, Patrick then returned to England when signing for Folkestone Invicta.

By 2016 he'd moved on to Canterbury City and was studying at the University of Kent, joining Herne Bay three years later.

1992 Ryan McGorrigan
born, Newcastle.
(2009-12)

Another graduate of Wallsend Boys Club, this right-sided midfielder/striker debuted for Newcastle's U18s during a 2-3 defeat by Everton in March 2009.

Making a reserve team debut in a 2-4 loss to Rotherham United the following October, Ryan began the 2010/11 season with the U18s but behind Phil Airey and Sammy Ameobi in the fight for reserve places.

Released by United in summer 2012, Ryan  had a trial at Mansfield Town before a deal with Gateshead was agreed.

Later with Blyth Spartans and Gateshead (again), a grand tour of local non-league sides included Whitley Bay, Ashington, Durham, Bedlington Terriers, North Shields, Ashington (again), Seaton Delaval, Blyth Town, West Allotment Celtic, Willington Quay Saints, Ashington, Newcastle Benfield and Willington Quay Saints.

1994 Death of George Hair, 69.

Ryton-born George scored against the mackems at Roker Park in the first competitive post-war derby - a 1-1 draw.

The club's other two shadow sides also lost; 0-1 at home to Whitley Bay Athletic and 2-5 at Chopwell Colliery.

Newcastle's run of eleven consecutive league victories from the start of the season (and 17 unbeaten in all competitions) came to an abrupt end at SJP.

A poor performance should still have seen United find the net, but they were denied by the Mariner's debutant goalkeeper - on-loan ex-Mag, Dave Beasant.

And Grimsby left with the three points, after a late Jim Dobbin blast from distance flew past Tommy Wright - with the same player having earlier hit the Newcastle crossbar.

Two great and oft-repeated strikes from Le Tissier at The Dell made this a memorable Sunday afternoon TV fixture.

Denied a goal when Rob Lee's first half effort was ruled out for an offside against Andy Cole, United's number 9 headed in Mathie's cross at the "bus stop" end to equalise.

Mathie had been on the field for less than five minutes, after replacing Lee Clark - who clashed with United boss Kevin Keegan on the side of the pitch as he was withdrawn.

Le Tissier then volleyed home a late winner to ease the pressure on Saints manager, Gateshead-born Ian Branfoot.

Old boy Les Ferdinand soon limped off, but his replacement Stefan Iversen netted twice.

Spurs included old boy David Ginola and future Mag Stephen Carr, while future United coach Colin Calderwood was sent off in the closing stages after fouling Nobby Solano.

This proved to be the final sighting of misfit striker Stephane Guivarc'h in a Newcastle shirt, appearing as a second half substitute.

2000 A third friendly visit to Workington in just over three months saw a Newcastle XI run out 3-2 winners.

Goals from James Coppinger and Shola Ameobi were cancelled out by two home strikes past Jon Karelse, before Whitehaven-born Stuart Green won it for the visitors.

Meanwhile, Laurent Charvet said 'au revoir' to The Toon as he followed Steve Howey to Manchester City in a 1.5m deal.

2002 Neil Mellor gave Liverpool a half-time lead as the Reserves visited Chester's Deva Stadium. However late strikes from Christian Bassedas and Lewis Guy secured a notable victory for Tommy Craig's side.

The meeting of Kevin Keegan's former and current sides was as crazy as anything he ever oversaw during his time in Toon.

Amazingly it was 0-0 at half-time and looking all set to be a hard-fought, low scoring affair.

Seven goals then followed in 40 minutes, with City twice equalising, a penalty at either end and a last gasp winner from Craig Bellamy in front of the Gallowgate End.

2006 Having suffered no reaction to playing the full 90 minutes of a behind closed doors game against Gretna, Kieron Dyer was in action again for Newcastle reserves.

The midfielder got another 65 minutes under his belt in a 2-2 draw with a Darlington XI at Darsley Park. Andy Carroll and James Troisi were on target for the Magpies.

2008 A 3-1 victory at Darsley Park over their mackem counterparts sent the young Magpies to the top of the table, as they extended their run of wins to three games.

Among the goals again was striker Nile Ranger, who scored a brace for the third U18 game in succession - and also headed one against the mackem crossbar.
