Late joy for youngsters

Newcastle U18s  2  Nottingham Forest U18s  1

A shot from Alex O'Donovan in the fourth minute of time added on got Newcastles U18s back to winning ways at Little Benton on Saturday.

The young Magpies led at the interval through Jude Cogdon and had looked set for the three points until Spencer Sutton's leveller in the first minute of time added on.

However United weren't to be denied, O'Donovan's first league goal of the season enough to halt a three game losing run for the U18s in league and cup matches.

Now 65, Rafa has been filling in his time as a football pundit since his most recent managerial role at Spanish side Celta Vigo came to an end in March 2024.

And he made a winning start on Sunday, watching his new charges record a 2-0 home with over Atsteras Tripolis.

Entering at the Third Round stage due to their European involvement like Newcastle, Spurs made it to the last 16 thanks to a routine 3-0 home win over Doncaster Rovers.

The two sides last faced each other in pre-season, a Harvey Barnes goal giving United a 1-1 draw in the South Korean capital, Seoul on the night that Son Heung-Min ended his decade-long association with the Cockerels.

While Newcastle enjoy home comforts for the third successive game, the visitors complete a trio of away fixtures: drawing 0-0 in Monaco in the Champions League on Thursday and winning 3-0 at Everton in the Premier League on Sunday before heading to the North East.

Spurs will be backed by 4,900 fans - the same allocation that Bradford City received in the last round. On that basis expect temporary post-match closures of the walking route from the Leazes End onto Barrack Road for home fans, as was the case against the Bantams.

Referee: Chris Kavanagh - second Newcastle game of the season so far for the Lancashire whistler, following the 1-0 Premier League home success against Wolves.

Premier League:
TV times (incomplete)

October 15th saw the Premier League announce some changes to the December fixture list, with three Newcastle games rescheduled for TV as follows:

Tue 02.12.2025 Spurs (h) 8.15pm Sky
Sat 06.12.2025 Burnley (h) 3pm (no live TV)
Sun 14.12.2025 mackems (a) 2pm Sky
Sat 20.12.2025 Chelsea (h) 12.30pm TNT

Although fixtures up to the end of January were due that day, only those up to Mon 22.12.2025 actually appeared.

There's no word on when the remainder will be released, leaving seven Newcastle games still subject to change:

Sat 27.12.2025 tbc Manchester United (a)
Tue 30.12.2025 tbc Burnley (a)

Sat 03.01.2026 tbc Crystal Palace (h)

Sat 17.01.2026 tbc Wolves (a)
Sat 24.01.2026 tbc Aston Villa (h)*
Sat 31.01.2026 tbc Liverpool (a)

The initial fixture release in June didn't list any games on either December 26th or January 1st, but the PL's only "blackout" days are December 24th and 25th.

On that basis, some PL fixtures are liable to be played on both Boxing Day and New Years Day.

* Aston Villa's visit to SJP will move from Sat 24.01.2026 due to their Europa League tie on Thu 22.01.2026.

Leeds United U17s  0  Newcastle U17s  2

Wednesday saw Newcastle U17s complete their group stage fixtures in this season's Premier League Cup, victory at Thorp Arch giving them three wins from as many games.

Mason Miley shot his side ahead with a first-time effort from inside the centre circle. Substitute Alfie Seldon then set up Alfie Hutchison for the clinching second goal; an excellent defensive performance resulting in a clean sheet.

Team: Dowell, Patterson, Moran, Old, Durrant, Goodbrand, M.Miley, Gilligan, Pinnington, Hutchison, Ferreira.

Earlier in the group stage, the youngsters won 2-1 at Boro, thanks to late goals from Hutchison and Seldon.

A 5-3 home conquest of the mackems followed, Seldon's brace adding to Jake Durrant's opener and two from Jack Patterson.

This is the second successive season that Newcastle have reached the last eight of this competition, exiting at the hands of Manchester United in 2024.

Also through to the quarter finals are Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City, Liverpool, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion, with the other two group winners known when the final fixtures take place later this month.

Update:
Sandro signs on

Wednesday brought media reports that the Sandro Tonali contract extension said to have been a priority for new Sporting Director Ross Wilson was in fact done and dusted while one of his predecessors was still in post.

The 25 year-old Italian midfielder signed a five year deal following his capture from AC Milan in 2023 and is now revealed to have put pen to paper on an extension while serving his suspension for breaking betting regulations.

Tonali is now said to be under contract at SJP until 2029, with a further 12 month extension exercisable at the club's discretion - negotiations for both completed before Dan Ashworth left the Magpies in early 2024.

Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons, winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.

Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at 30.

On This Day in History
26th October

Born Or Died:

1937 Peter Willis born, Newfield, Bishop Auckland. (dates tbc)

Better known as a Football League referee from 1971 to 1986 and remembered for the first FA Cup Final dismissal (Kevin Moran of Manchester United in 1985), Peter was a reserve goalkeeper for the Magpies.

Playing amateur football for Willington, Tow Law and Langley Park, Willis joined the police force after failing to win a professional contract at St. James' Park.

First taking charge of a local game during 1963 (as he was the only one with a whistle, he reckoned), Peter then trained to be an official and debuted as a linesman in senior football during 1968.

Officiating his final game in the Football League during 1986, he then served as President of the association until 2004 despite suffering a stroke.

Undergoing a series of cancer operations during 2011 and 2012, Peter passed away in July 2021. He was 83.

1971 Steve Howey
born, sunderland.
(1986-2000)

Variously known as "Pop" and "The Boy" during his time at SJP, Steve began his Newcastle career as a striker in both the junior and reserve sides, playing his initial first team games in that role.

Making his first team debut in the final game of the 1988/89 relegation season away at Manchester United, he had to wait until the start of the 1990/91 season for a second go.

However, he was less than prolific and after an initial suggestion by Ossie Ardiles saw him drop back into midfield, Kevin Keegan then completed the process of making him into a central defender.

That switch was to bring four full England caps between 1994 and 1996, with only a freak injury ruling him out of the Euro 96 squad - Howey twisted his ankle while on a run when he caught his foot in a rabbit hole.

Steve left SJP in August 2000, after ongoing fitness problems affected his availability - Joe Royle's Manchester City paying £2m.

The transfer gave Howey's career a boost, making over 100 appearances and scoring 11 goals, before being declared surplus to requirements by Kevin Keegan in 2003.

Later moves took him on to Leicester City and Bolton Wanderers, but injuries were taking their toll by then. An unsuccessful trial with Sheffield United led to a stint in the USA with MLS side New England Revolution, but that soon fizzled out.

A brief (one game) spell at Hartlepool United followed before Howey's boots were temporarily hung up at the age of 33.

Since then he's twice been tempted into non -league management, with unsuccessful stints at both Brandon United and Crook Town.

Less than a month before his 36th birthday, Howey made a playing return with Northern League side Bishop Auckland, linking up with
newly-reappointed boss Brian Honour.

However, that proved to be only a fleeting association and the ex-England international returned to media work and an FA role as a referee's assessor.

1972 Death of Dave Fairhurst, 66.
(1929-46)

England international and member of the 1932 FA Cup-winning side, who defeated Arsenal in the so-called "Over the Line" final - yes, they were moaning even then....

1990 Henri Saivet born, Dakar, Senegal. (2016-21)

Newcastle's first arrival of the January 2016 window was this defensive midfielder from French Ligue 1 side Bordeaux.

Earmarked to replace Cheick Tiote (who ended up staying), the 25 year-old Senegal international signed a five and a half year deal for a claimed £5m fee.

Along with Yoan Gouffran, Saivet played for Bordeaux against United in the Europa League in 2012.

Paraded along with fellow new boy Jonjo Shelvey before a 3-3 home draw with Manchester United, he debuted from the bench in a 2-1 win against West Ham at SJP the following Saturday.

Appearing four times before Steve McClaren was sacked, Henri remained was never selected by successor Rafa Benitez as United attempted to avoid relegation.

Following a season-long loan at St. Etienne, Saivet was named in the 25 man PL squad, featuring in a League Cup loss to Nottingham Forest during August 2017.

An unexpected recall for the PL trip to West Ham that December saw him net a fine free kick but he was dropped for the next game.

Loaned to Turkish side Sivasspor a month later following two FA Cup outings, Henri stayed in Turkey for the 2018/19 season, loaned out to Bursaspor and also playing for Senegal at the African Nations Cup Finals that summer.

That third loan period again failed to turn into a permanent exit and Saivet found himself back on Tyneside but omitted from the squad inherited by Steve Bruce.

A similar situation 12 months later saw him play in friendly matches ahead of the 2020/21 season, but fail to win a place in the squad.

Henri finally departed from SJP when his contract expired in July 2021 - having cost the club an estimated £12m in wages.

His final outing was an U23 game against Norwich City in March 2021 - over three years after his eighth and final senior competitive appearance for the Magpies.

Saivet then belatedly made a playing return for French Ligue 2 side Pau in August 2022 before joining Clermont in June 2024.

Before opting to represent Senegal, He played for France U21s with fellow Magpies Remy Cabella and Massadio Haidara.

1995 Yasin Ben El-Mhanni born, London. (2016-18)

United added this free agent attacking midfielder to their U21 squad in July 2016.

London-born with Moroccan parents, Yasin attended the AG Football Academy and played at youth level for Barnet and Aldershot.

Training with Watford, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, he appeared for non-league sides Farnborough and Lewes during the 2015/16 season and also featured as a trialist for West Bromwich Albion and Chelsea.

El-Mhanni's Magpies bow came during a pre-season victory over Darlington and his first reserves start was at Fulham just a couple of days before his 21st birthday.

Netting for the first time in a 2-0 win over Boro at SJP during October 2016, a senior team debut came there three months later.

Yas was selected by Rafa Benitez with fellow rookies Stuart Findlay and Dan Barlaser for United's 3-1 FA Cup Third Round home replay win over Birmingham City and the awful 0-3 defeat at Oxford in the next round.

However, his fall from grace would be swift and noticeable; never picked again for senior team duty and even struggling to get a regular start for the U23s.

Allegations of bullying against Development Coach Peter Beardsley by El-Mhanni saw his profile raised and led to a club review of off-field behaviour.

With Beardsley on gardening leave, United released Yas in June 2018 along with a clutch of other reserve team players.

Following a trial at Brentford, he agreed a deal with League One Scunthorpe United for the remainder of the season.

Despite netting on debut in a Checkatrade Trophy tie though, he failed to secure a regular place in the side and left in 2020.

Resurfacing on trial at Southend United in July 2021, he joined Southern League side Chesham United and then Harrow and Borough in February 2022.

Training with Reading in July 2022 before signing for Arbroath three months later, he debuted for them in January 2023 but wasn't retained at the end of the season.

His current whereabouts are unknown.

The forerunners to the present day Manchester United would lose all four visits to Tyneside - this their second trip to Gallowgate.

A Bob Foyers free kick was turned past his own 'keeper by George Perrins but William Kennedy levelled shortly after the interval.

The Magpies played with ten men for over an hour, following the enforced withdrawal of James Logan due to injury.

And revenge was gained for a 1-2 away loss to the Heathens a week earlier when Willie Wardrope's third goal of the season clinched victory late on.

The Shields Daily News reflected that, "the better team won and they would have scored more had not Newton Heath fouled so often in front of goal."

A sensational win came on a quagmire of a pitch at Goodison against a weakened home side.

George Robey was a music hall comedian ("The Prime Minister of Mirth") who first put together a side to appear in a benefit match for the widow of Chelsea coach Jimmy Miller in 1907.

The tradition continued subsequently and numerous benefit matches were staged for charitable causes.

This meeting was billed as being for "The Newcastle unemployed" and the visiting side was made up of players from Sunderland, Middlesbrough and South Shields - with Robey leading the attack.

The game came at some cost to United though, who lost both Andy Smailes and Harris to injury - the former missing a month and the latter not returning to the side until the following April.

One up at the interval through Lee Clark - one day short of his 19th birthday - United were made to pay for missing chances to extend their lead.

Having gained an assist for the goal, midfielder David Roche was forced to move into defence after Alan Neilson limped out of the action.

And when Gavin Peacock went off, which saw Andy Hunt drop into midfield, City pushed on and were rewarded by a late leveller from one- time Newcastle trialist, Bob Taylor.

Man of the match Tommy Wright made sure the Magpies returned from Ashton Gate with a point though, after a fine reflex stop to deny Wayne Allison from close range.

Shaun Bartlett had put the Addicks ahead, no doubt to the delight of his three year-old son, Tyrique. Fast forward 15 years and Bartlett junior was a Newcastle player.

2004 Newcastle reserves suffered a second successive Senior Cup defeat to Bedlington Terriers.

Ahead through Carl Finnigan, a trio of inspired late substitutions by the Northern League side saw United fall behind and trail 1-3.

And although the Magpies reduced the arrears in added time through Guy Bates, Bedlington held on to win the tie.

mazingly ref Mark Halsey waved play-on, despite initially putting his whistle to his mouth. Big Al gained his revenge, however, by smashing the small-fry Mariners out of the cup with a stunning left-footed strike.

2009 United lodged an appeal following the dismissal of defender Zurab Khizanishvili against Doncaster Rovers.

However, the appeal was not to dispute the actual red card, but rather an automatic three game suspension for violent conduct. As a result he was ineligible for the trip to Bramall Lane.

The 14-match unbeaten run came to an end at Ewood Park but only after a creditable fight back; two added time away goals taking the tie to extra-time.

A Peter Lovenkrands equaliser seemingly taken the tie to spot kicks, only for Rovers to win it in the final minute of extra-time, as an offside-looking Gael Givet headed past Tim Krul.

Referee Bobby Madley denied United at least three penalties before his linesman gave one that Lovenkrands converted.
